T

here’s an interesting shift in home décor this year as everything from exterior walls to eye-catching interior furnishings are moving away from mass-produced home accessories, cookie cutter furniture and building materials, and towards organic modern décor through the use of clay, stone, concrete and natural materials with textural integrity.

Abaco chef raises concerns over rising food prices; partners with non-profit to feed Bahamians

A

s a chef, Chanté Basden has made a career of feeding people.

But the assignment has become more difficult in recent months given the current rise in food prices and the global supply shortage.

Chanté is a third-generation chef and runs her family’s pastry shop in Abaco. She also recently ticked off another item on her bucket list by opening her own culinary supply store called Chef Factory.

She has seen both a concerning decline in the availability of products on her island and a huge spike in prices for the items that are available.

“Bread is one of those items which has become a little too pricey for some persons to purchase, which if you think about it, is a bit scary. I know a few bakeries which have had to close down because the operational costs have become too high,” she told Tribune Weekend.

“Grocery prices here on the island were even more expensive than in Nassau already, so you can imagine the prices now. For example, take a 1lb box of cream cheese, which is a staple in a lot off my pastry dishes; it used to be $10, but now it is $20. Shipping is ridiculous.”

Chanté said she is passionate about helping to feed the people of Abaco, but it’s not an easy undertaking.

“When you crunch the numbers, it is very scary.

It is a real question that we have to answer: how can we provide food for people who need it?”

This question is what led her to partner with the Rotary Club of Abaco and the No Kid Hungry organisation, as well as with the American basedcharity run by Share Our Strength, a nonprofit working to solve problems of hunger and poverty around the world.

Chanté became affiliated with the organisation when she competed in the World’s Greatest Baker challenge back in 2020. The competition is the world’s largest online competition for bakers.

She entered the competition hoping to shine a light on the culinary capabilities of the Bahamian people and to be an inspiration to other young people. Chanté made it to the advanced rounds of the voter-based competition and says that the experience provided her with international exposure.

For example, she was featured in Pastry Arts Magazine with her Bahamian guava cream cheese swirl danish with guava bourbon glaze.

The dish was made at the request of Tish Boyle, the managing editor of Pastry Arts Magazine and

an experienced food writer, cookbook author, pastry chef and recipe developer.

Her previous books include Chocolate Passion, Dinner Desserts, The Good Cookie, and The Cake Book.

Chanté said she wants to share her Bahamian recipes around the world so that people can try their hands at recreating them.

Dr Anishka Rolle As a rheumatologist who deals with local lupus patients, this board-certified specialist knows the importance of early diagnosis and treatment to mitigate against worst-case scenarios. She tells Cara Hunt about medical advancements to treat a disease many Bahamians suffer from.

M

ay is the month designated for Lupus Awareness and Dr Anishka Rolle is one of the physicians who works to help ease the suffering of Bahamians affected by the condition.

Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that commonly starts in young women of child-bearing age, although it can sometimes start during childhood.

“It causes inflammation which affects multiple organs.

With lupus, the immune system attacks the patient’s own tissues, leading to multiple disease manifestations. In the Bahamas, young Black females are mostly affected by lupus. However, I also see and treat males and children with lupus,” said Dr Rolle.

She said the cause for the prevalence of lupus in the Bahamas is unknown.

“I know that the number of patients seen in rheumatology clinics or admitted in hospital is certainly an underestimation of the true number of persons affected with the disease in our population,” she said.

One of the projects she and her colleagues are working on is the creation of a lupus registry, which would seek to improve upon existing data.

“By learning more about lupus in our community, we can recognise how to better manage symptoms over time and determine disease severity and its impact on public health,” she explained.

Dr Rolle also works hand-in-hand with Lupus 242, an the advocacy group that provides support to lupus patients and their families.

“It is an awesome organisation,” said Dr Rolle. “They work to promote lupus awareness and support advocacy because they are intimately aware of the day-to day challenges persons with lupus face with controlling their disease and getting affordable and adequate treatment and the unfortunate misconceptions around their disease.”

Lupus is a ruthless disease that can cause a myriad of painful side effects and symptoms.

“With lupus, the immune system attacks the patient’s own tissues leading to multiple disease manifestations.

Lupus-specific symptoms includes photosensitive rashes, mouth sores, arthritis, lung and heart inflammation, kidney and neurological problems and abnormal blood tests such as a positive ANA But there are many symptoms that are not specific to lupus like fever, weight loss, hair loss, blood clots and fatigue. serious flares, followed by times when the disease is mostly quiet or in remission,” she explained.

Dr Rolle is board-certified in internal medicine and rheumatology. She completed her medical school training at the University of the West Indies and then went on to complete her internal medicine residency training at Carilion Clinic, and subspecialty training at the Roger Williams Medical Centre, Brown University, respectively.

She is a fellow and is certified by the American College of Rheumatology in diagnostic and therapeutic musculoskeletal ultrasonography.

She has worked in both academic and community rheumatology in the United States for over seven years and is experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of arthritis and other musculoskeletal diseases of the joints, muscles and bones.

Dr Rolle has dedicated her practice to the specialised field of rheumatology and integrates all aspects of care by collectively combining her knowledge, experience and expertise to provide her patients with the most advanced and patientspecific treatment options. Her more specific fields of interest include the treatment of lupus, vasculitis and enhancing the peri-pregnancy care of high-risk patients with rheumatic disease.

“As a rheumatologist, my treatment goals are always to suppress an overactive immune system in order to stop the disease and prevent long-term damage,” she said.

“Today, I want everyone to know that treatment of lupus has improved and people with the disease are living longer and having normal productive lives.”

Despite the medical advancements, Dr Rolle said it remains a difficult journey for lupus patients and their loved ones.

“Having a loved one with lupus is difficult. I advise family, particularly caregivers and friends of lupus patients with serious or highly active disease,

to seek help from community resources like their local church family or pastor for spiritual support and upliftment, community service groups like Lupus 242 and the medical community, such as their family physician and mental health resources to address specific needs like depression, anxiety and grief,” she said.

“Online resources are also available through the Caribbean Association for Rheumatology, the Lupus Foundation of America and many more.’

Dr Rolle’s hope is that people seek treatment sooner rather than later.

“I see many patients with serious life-threatening lupus activity. My hope is to see patients early on in their disease course and not mainly during serious disease flares that require hospitalisation,” she said.

“Patients need to get started on the appropriate medications early in order to control and ultimately prevent organ-threatening disease like lupus nephritis, which in many cases leads to chronic kidney failure and long-term haemodialysis.

“This can be achieved by educating local practitioners and the community at large about the signs and symptoms of lupus and when to refer to or seek the care of a rheumatologist.”

Dr Rolle admitted that there are challenges when it comes to providing care in the Bahamas.

“Medical care is important, although its prohibitive cost can also negatively impact a patient’s ability to get care,” she said.

“Getting regular labs and screening or surveillance tests that are important to monitor disease activity are cost prohibitive for many patients, particularly the uninsured. Financial limitations, poor medication compliance and follow-ups, make providing proper patient care very difficult.”

Additionally, she added, “Cultural misconceptions about western medicines and the risks

For newly diagnosed patients, I strongly suggest that you get as much knowledge as possible about your disease - treatment options and monitoring. See a rheumatologist who will work with your regular family doctor to give you the best treatment options.

“Get support through online or community lupus groups where you can engage with others to share experiences and find emotional support.

Work on a healthy lifestyle through dietary modifications and regular exercise. Finally, have a plan to deal with health emergencies.”

Fortunately, she said, there have been recent advancements in the treatment of lupus.

“There is a lot of research happening to improve the lives of lupus patients by providing earlier diagnosis and better treatment options,” she said.

“There are two new drugs specific for patients with lupus that has affected the kidneys. There are also new infusion medications or biologics that lower immune cells and autoantibodies in lupus patients with particularly severe kidney and neurologic disease.”

They were officially started in 2012. Their goals include increasing awareness locally and supporting global research efforts to find a cure for lupus.

Tomorrow’s stars to take stage at SoundWaves festival

T

he Bahamas’ up-and-coming stars, including two former beauty queens and a group of talented high schoolers, will take the stage next Saturday to showcase their musical talents.

New, exciting creatives will be featured at SoundWaves’ “Starry Night” mini festival to held at the National Art Gallery on May 28.

Timothy Daniels, founder of SoundWaves, said the event continues to promote original music, art and poetry made in the Bahamas. He believes the level of talent in the country is astounding and his team’s goal is to connect emerging creatives with an audience of music and art enthusiasts.

“All are welcome at SoundWaves, and we attempt to keep the cost low so everyone can come and enjoy the show. We pride ourselves on creating a positive atmosphere that brings together creative minds, and new friends,” Timothy told Tribune Weekend.

The event will begin at 8pm and showcase music from all genres, including pop, hip-hop, R&B, jazz, rock and folk.

When asked what inspired this year’s festival, Timothy said there are artists and musicians who are still suffering from setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Now more than ever, he said, support is needed for local talent in order to create a thriving entertainment industry.

“Last year’s SoundWaves ‘Day and Night’ event at NAGB’s Fiona Theatre was a huge success, and we knew we had to return for another exciting show,” said Timothy.

“There are some exciting new acts that are coming out that we wanted to help get exposure for. One of our new acts is the super trio called The Mannequins, composed of SoundWaves veteran Zaafira, former Miss Bahamas Tarea Sturrup, and former Miss Bahamas Universe Rokara Hepburn. Highlights of the festival will include a selection of artwork by seven local artists. Meanwhile, the Tipsea Bar will provide drinks and craft cocktails for thirsty patrons. There will be a food court which will serve up international dishes like poutine from The Bahamian Beaver, tacos from Eat Meh Taco, and ramen and noodles from Hot Pot.

Another group, the Black Swann Band, which has taken the Bahamian music scene by storm are also ready to entertain the crowd with their new original music.

Some of Bahamas’ top visual artists and artisans will be displaying and selling their work, including Nameless Dylan with his unique designs and Durelle Williams with her portraits and abstract painting. Justin Moultrie continues to refine his craft, and has been a part of SoundWaves from the start. Ashley Cooper, who is developing new abstract work, will also be present.

Trimming and buzzing

ood day, gardeners.

Whatever you are growing in your garden ought to be pushing loads of new growth this week.

It is that time of year. Palm trees ought to have new spikes, shrubs and trees ought to have lots of new leaf, and many types of plants ought to be pushing flower. The deluge that we experienced has really freshened up the garden, and it ought to be responding.

If you live in a flood prone area, I suggest planting species that use water quickly, in low spots. Alpinia ginger, fishtail palms, silver or green buttonwood, Acalypha (match me if you can), bamboo. All of those and more are able to take water and make quick use of it. Fruit trees are flushing, dilly trees are bearing. Mango trees are fruiting and blooming, and it is generally a very

happy time in the garden. If you have a high spot in your garden that is rocky or dry, thyme and rosemary may do very well. I find that mint can tolerate wet spells as a ground cover, and perennial peanut is a good one to cover areas where turf grass won’t grow.

The blue and white plumbago are flourishing and are usually covered in blooms, and quickly rebloom after pruning at this time of year. Firebush is showing off, and can you believe that Poinciana trees are showing off already? The early ones anyway. What’s the point? The point is that it is also a good time to prune shrubs and trees, as they quickly respond

and concentrate growth to where a pruning exercise leads it.

If something is blooming now and those blooms are wanted or desired, then it may be best to wait until after this flowering phase to prune. When we prune one growth tip, two or more will appear, and the result is more foliage, and for those plants that bloom on new growth, hibiscus for example, the result is not only increased foliage growth but more flowers as well. Something else responds very quickly to heavy rains and hopefully you are not too buzzed at the moment, if you are you know this one well: the ever-pesky mosquito. Swipe, swat, slap. Thinning trees and training shrubs to have strong, open branching structures gives mosquitoes less area to hang around in. They love dark areas with little airflow. Air movement is key in a healthy garden environment, I will posit to say that holds true for most environments if they are to be conducive to habitation.

I am a fan of keeping water around for a few fish and for tadpoles.

in it does not give much of a chance for mosquitoes to survive the next fishy feeding time. The water with the tadpoles in it is a ripe breeding ground for mosquitoes, tadpoles do not eat mosquito larvae in the water, when they mature into frogs they do. Why would I keep water for tadpoles then if mosquitoes are a problem? Well, once those swimmers mature, they become a valuable pest control friend on four legs. Ribbit.

What about the mosquito larvae that breeds in the tadpole water? A name I call out often in relation to pest control: Bacillus thuringiensis (BT), and in this case, it is the subspecies israelensis. BT israelensis is sold as a product labelled as Mosquito Bits, and it works. It is completely harmless to tadpoles, frogs, or frog eggs, but it kills mosquito larvae in less than 24 hours, I use it with success. So yeah, right now I am the happy dad of a few hundred tadpoles that will either become bird food or pest control, and birds also provide pest control, they need to eat too.

Please stop spraying and spreading so many poisons in the garden (this very much includes rat poison, which I will touch back onto at a later date). There are both mechanical (i.e., by hand) and biological solutions for many so-called problems in the garden. Trim plants at will after flowering or fruiting during this time of year as most will respond vigorously and readily. Mosquito Bits can be spread in water without harm to fish or tadpoles, and it can also be used in any area with standing water to control mosquitoes. There is what I am being led to believe is a myth that mosquitoes breed in bromeliads.

Some species of mosquito do (there are thousands of harmless species of mosquito), but I keep hearing from folks who know more than I about studies being done that I that the mosquito Aedes aegypti does not breed in bromeliads. Whether they do or not, I cannot confirm, but Mosquito Bits work there as well as both a preventative and remedial treatment. Sharpen your clippers and throw some Mosquito Bits around, for a happier gardening experience. As always, I wish you happy gardening.

Raise a glass to World Whisky Day

Traditional drink has a comeback

f you’re a whisky lover, then tomorrow – World Whisky Day – will be the perfect excuse to enjoy one or even several glasses of your favourite alcoholic beverage.

Celebrated on the third Saturday in May, World Whisky Day was started in 2012 by Blair Bowman while studying at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland.

The whisky consultant and broker wanted to create a day to celebrate his favourite drink and invite people around the world to indulge in a dram of the famous “water of life”.

There will be events happening around the world to observe the day, including one here in the Bahamas, where Atlantis is hosting a special whisky, seafood and steak dinner at the Ocean Club Estates Clubhouse on Saturday evening.

According to Sean Cartwright, Atlantis’ Senior Director of Beverage, whisky has risen “mightily” in popularity and importance, particularly in America, over the past 10 decade.

This is in part due misconceptions about whisky being an old-fashioned drink being refuted.

“Whisky used to have a perception of the older male consumer who perhaps consumes it after dinner with a cigar. However, the evolution of whisky consumption has expanded broadly over the past 10 years. US Whisky could not just grow 60 percent in 10 years on the back of that stereotypical whisky consumer. Women, AfricanAmerican and younger consumers have emerged as great lovers of whisky,” he told Tribune Weekend.

“The resurgence of classic cocktails like Old Fashioned’s and Manhattans also gave a huge boost to American whiskys.”

Additionally, he explained, there has been a generational relaxing of the “rules” which in the past limited consumption to “neat” or “on the rocks”. Now, there are new interesting flavour profiles like apple, cinnamon or even peanut butter that make consumption more versatile.

“From 2011 to 2021, American whisky grew by 60 percent in volume. Atlantis guests are overwhelmingly of US origin, so we pay attention to those trends to be proactive to meet their needs.

We’ve increased our selection and volumes on many great brands whether they are long-time favourites like Jack Daniel’s from Tennessee, or relatively younger brands like High West of Utah, Templeton of Iowa, or even the fun new superstar, Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey from California,” said Mr Cartwright.

Whisky (Scottish spelling), or whiskey (Irish and American spelling), comes from the classical Gaelic word for water, “uisge” (or “uisce”) – a shortened version of uisge beatha, meaning “water of life,” also known as aqua vitae in Latin.

While it is possible that non-alcoholic distillation was practiced as early as the second millennium BC by the Babylonians, the earliest records of the distillation of alcohol are from 13th century Italy, where alcohol was distilled from wine.

Distilling techniques are believed to have been brought to Ireland and Scotland no later than the 15th century by monks. (The earliest reference to whisky occurs in the Scottish Exchequer Rolls for 1494).

But since wine was not easily obtained in those countries, barley beer was distilled into a liquor, which became our modern-day whisky.

At tomorrow night’s World Whisky Day event, both the rich past and the bright future of whisky will be celebrated.

The dinner, which starts at 5pm at the Ocean Club Estates Clubhouse, will feature the High West Distillery from Utah.

Brand ambassador Arianna King will be present to share her knowledge and answer any questions guests may have concerning whisky.

There will be whisky selections from Scotland, Ireland, Japan, Canada, and the US, said Sean Cartwright of Atlantis.

“We decided this was a great opportunity to showcase classic culinary pairings with a great brand of whisky like High West. High West’s portfolio of bourbon and rye from Park City, Utah, exemplifies the rich heritage and authenticity of the American West while giving our guests one of the more innovative and collaborative whisky producers Atlantis has on property,” said Mr Cartwright.

The event will also teach guests the best way to pair different whiskys with various dishes.

“Different whisky taste profiles call for different foods. Like wine, there are so many elements in whisky for the nose and palate to consider – salty, sweet, smoky, spicy, dried fruits, nuts, chocolates etcetera,” he said.

literary lives – Margaret Sullavan (1909-1960)

A short but impactful Golden Age career Sir Christopher Ondaatje reveals the temperamental character of the American stage and film actress who began her career onstage but was lured to Hollywood in the early 1930s and made 16 films – four of which were opposite James Stewart in a popular partnership.

– Margaret Sullavan Margaret Brooke Sullavan was born on May 16, 1909, Norfolk, Virginia – the daughter of a wealthy stockbroker, Cornelius Sullavan, and his wife Garland Council Sullavan. She had a younger brother Cornelius, and a half-sister Louise Gregory. For the first six years of her life she had a painful muscular weakness in her legs which prevented her from walking. However, she recovered and emerged as a tomboyish child who spent her time with children from poor neighbourhoods – much to the disapproval of her parents. She was sent to boarding school at Chatham Episcopal Institute (now Chatham Hall). She was president of the student body and delivered the salutatory ovation in 1927. She moved to Boston and lived with her half-sister, and studied dance at the Boston Denishawn studio and drama at the Copley Theatre – again despite the objections of her class-conscious parents.

She defiantly got a job as a clerk in the Harvard Cooperative bookstore in Cambridge.

In the spring of 1929, Sullavan managed to get a part in the Harvard Dramatic Society Close Up. She was then persuaded to join them for their second summer season in Cape Cod. Henry Fonda was another member of the University Players. She played opposite Fonda, her first professional debut, in The Devil in the Cheese.

She rejoined the Players for most of their 1930/31 winter season in Baltimore.

In 1930, she played the lead in Strictly Dishonorable by Preston Sturges. She made her debut on Broadway in A Modern Virgin by Elmer Harris on May 30, 1931. In 1932, she starred in four Broadway failures but she was praised by the critics. When she replaced another actor in Dinner at Eight in New York movie director John M Stahl saw her and decided she would be perfect for Only Yesterday – a film he was planning for Universal Studios. She was offered a two-pictures-a-year contract for three years, which she accepted at $1,200 a week providing she could return to the stage on occasion. She never got rid of her love for the stage and her fear of selling herself to Hollywood.

- Margaret Sullavan Sullavan arrived in Hollywood on May 16, 1933 – her 24th birthday.

Only Yesterday was her film debut.

When she saw the early rushes she was so disgusted that she tried to buy herself out of her contract, but Universal refused. Richard Watts, Jr of The New York Herald Tribune wrote on November 10, 1933: “Sullavan plays the tragic and lovelorn heroine of this shrewdly sentimental orgy with such forthright sympathy, wise reticence and honest feeling that she establishes herself with some definiteness as one of the cinema people to be watched.”

finally capitulated and in Next Time We Love (1936) she got her wish.

At that time Stewart was relatively unknown. The simple gentle interplay between Sullavan and Stewart saved the film. It was the first of four films made by Sullavan and Stewart.

The Moon’s Our Home (1936) was Sullavan’s next film, and she played opposite her ex-husband Henry Fonda. Dorothy Parker and Alan Campbell were brought in to brighten the dialogue – probably at Sullavan’s insistence. Sullavan and Fonda play a newly-married couple, and the movie is a potpourri of banter and insults. Her seventh film, Three Comrades (1938), was a drama set in post-World War I Germany. Sullavan got her first Oscar nomination for her performance and was named the year’s best actress by the New York Film Critics Circle.

Little Man, What Now? was her next film, and although Universal did not want to make a film about unemployment, starvation and homelessness, the film was an important project for Sullavan. She said it was one of the few things she did in Hollywood that gave her some degree of satisfaction. The Good Fairy (1935) was Sullavan’s next film – a comedy that Sullavan chose to illustrate her versatility. She married the film’s director, William Wyler, during its production.

King Vidor’s So Red The Rose (1935) gave Sullavan the chance to play a childish Southern belle who matures into a responsible woman.

The film deals about people in the South in the aftermath of the Civil War and preceded by one year the publication of Margaret Mitchell’s best selling novel Gone With the Wind.

Sullavan had been campaigning for some time to get James Stewart to be her leading man, and Universal

James Stewart was again teamed with Sullavan in The Shopworn Angel (1938). The chemistry between the two actors was obvious – Stewart playing a naive Texan soldier on his way to fight in World War I. Sullavan next, in her ninth film, played the suicidal sister-in-law of the Joan Crawford character in The Shining Hour (1938), before teaming up with Stewart again in The Shop Around the Corner (1940), playing two colleagues in a music shop who do not get along, but secretly exchange love letters, without the other knowing it.

Sullavan was anxious to leave Universal Films, but a court decision forced her to make two more films – completing her contract. The first was Back Street (1941) opposite Charles Boyer, and was praised

as one of her best performances.

with the couple’s first child – their daughter Brooke who later became an actress and author of the brilliant 1977 autobiography Haywire. She had two further children: Bridget and William Hayward III. Sullavan filed for divorce when she discovered that Hayward was having an affair with Nancy “Slim” Keith. The divorce became final on April 20, 1948. In 1950, Sullavan married for the fourth time to British investment banker Kenneth Wagg which lasted until her death in 1960.

Appointment for Love (1941) was the second contractual film for Universal, and the last she would make for the company. Charles Boyer again plays opposite Sullavan who marries Boyer, but she insists that they live in separate apartments and meet only once a day at seven o’clock in the morning.

In 1955 Sullavan’s two younger children informed their mother than they wanted to live with their father Leland Hayward permanently. This was the cause of Sullavan’s nervous breakdown. Sullavan spent two and a half months in a mental institution, but her condition worsened.

– Margaret Sullavan Cry Havoc (1943) is an all-female film made with Metro-GoldwynMayer where Sullavan plays a strong-willed nurse who keeps the others in line in a dug-out in Bataan – a province in the Philippines – while they are waiting for the advance of Japanese soldiers. It was the last film Sullavan made with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and freed her of all film commitments. She told her new husband, producer and agent Leland Hayward, that MGM and Universal were “jails”.

“I still hate making pictures. Perhaps I’ll get used to this bizarre place called Hollywood – but I doubt it.”

– Margaret Sullavan Sullavan left films from 1943 to 1950. She always preferred the stage to movies. She also wanted to spend time with her three children. She felt guilty that she had been neglecting them. However, she did do stage work on occasion. She played the sexually inexperienced Sally Middleton in The Voice of the Turtle (1943-1944) on Broadway. Then, after her brief return to films in No Sad Songs for Me (1950), she did not return to the stage until 1952 when she played the suicidal Hester Collyer in Terence Rattigan’s The Deep Blue Sea. In 1953, she agreed to appear in Sabrina Fair by Samuel Taylor. In 1955/56, Sullavan appeared in Janus and played the part of Jessica. The play ran for 251 performances, but her hearing and

depression were getting bad. Nevertheless, she did agree to do Sweet Love Remembered by Ruth Goetz.

It was to be her first Broadway experience for four years. Rehearsals began on December 1, 1959.

Sullavan was married four times.

When she was 22, she married Henry Fonda on December 25, 1931, while both were performing with University Players. They separated after two months and divorced in 1933.

Then, after a brief relationship with producer Jed Harris, she married William Wyler, the director of her movie The Good Fairy (1935) in November 1934. They divorced in March 1936. Sullavan’s third marriage was to agent and producer Leland Hayward on November 15, 1936, when she was pregnant

On January 1, 1960, at around 5.30pm, Sullavan was found barely alive in a hotel room in New Haven, Connecticut. Her copy of the script Sweet Love Remembered, in which she was rehearsing, was found beside her. She was taken immediately to Grace New Haven Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after 6pm. She was 50 years old. No note was found to indicate suicide, and no conclusion was reached as to whether her death was the result of an accidental overdose of barbiturates. The county coroner ruled that it was accidental.

“After he (my father) left her to marry Nancy ‘Slim’ Hawks in 1947, this terrifyingly self-willed woman shredded her career through the following 12 years with her struggle to repossess him. When Nancy divorced him there was a flaming period of hope in 1959. Then came the news of Leland’s decision to marry Pamela Churchill and she sank into despair and death.”

– Brooke Hayward Following a private memorial service in Greenwich, Connecticut, Sullavan was interred at Saint Mary’s Whitechapel Episcopal Churchyard in Lancaster, Virginia.

Dunmore leaves his mark

biquitous is the word that comes to my mind when the name Dunmore is spoken.

The Bahamas Humane Society in Chippingham is on Dunmore Avenue; Dunmore Lane connects Dowdeswell Street to Bay Street. Dunmore Street starts at Market Street, crosses Blue Hill Road and West Street, then continues westward to Dean Lane.

Dunmore Village extends southwards from Shirley Street (east) to Sutton Street and eastwards from Kemp Road to John Evans Road.

Dunmore Town is ‘the capital’ of Harbour Island.

All of these are named after John Murray, fourth Earl of Dunmore and Viscount Fincastle, who was Governor of the Bahamas from 1787 to 1796 and named the fort on Bennet’s Hill after himself.

Seighbert Russel wrote: “Dunmore’s was term as Governor was noted for the forts which he built and for the land which he acquired for his own use”.

A 1792 map shows that uninhabited Long Island had been divided into 283 plots, totalling 64,082 acres.

The original of that map is seven feet long, too big for this article, but I have extracted the list of grantees to show that Lord Dunmore had given himself 5,000 acres and given Murray family members another 1,868 acres. Josiah Tatnell received two 1,000-acre grants, John Miller got 2,306 acres and BGH McArthur’s grant was for 1,000 acres.

Everyone got less than that and Neptune Curtis got only 20 acres.

The principal monuments to Dunmore are many – Fort Charlotte (including Fort Stanley and Ford D’Arcy); Fort Fincastle; Fort Winton (if it still exists); Clifford Park – built on the 100 acres of land where buildings were prohibited. Dunmore said that the island would never again fall to invaders. In this he has been right.

Often overlooked is The Hermitage, the Eastern Road waterfront home of the Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Nassau, one of the properties owned and developed by Governor Dunmore, on which he built his summer residence. The original buildings were quite ordinary, and in no way as elaborate as the mansion that was built in the early 20th century.

several buyers: a Charles Dames; Mrs Amelia Tuohy; John Hepburn; Robert Sandilands; in 1849, to George Campbell Anderson, a former Speaker of the House of Assembly; Sir Augustus John Adderley; John Sargeant Darling; William Henry Hall; Sir Augustus John Adderley (a previous owner) who, in 1886, sold it to the Public Board of Works; Harriet Isabella Stuart; John Alexander Rutherford and Cora Baker Rutherford.

In 1918, the Rutherfords sold to Lady Williams-Taylor, who sold it to (Sir) Harold Christie. Christie sold The Hermitage with its seven and a half acres and 350 feet of water-frontage to Cardinal William O’Connell and, in 1940, O’Connell gave The Hermitage to the Roman Catholic Church.

hales, the biggest mammals on earth.

Whales of so many different species.

I simply could not believe how many when I looked them up to write this article. There are nine species, namely the fin whale, sei whale, Bryde’s whale, Eden’s whale, blue whale, common minke whale, Antarctic minke whale, Omura’s whale, and humpback whale.

To add to this there are 21 different whales, and then there are the toothed whales. In short, there are a vast amount of these incredible giants who inhabit our oceans. They are gentle giants who drift around the world causing huge excitement whenever they break the surface to take a breath.

When I was a child, my parents and I would take the Queen Mary or Queen Elizabeth across the Atlantic to and from England. I vividly remember that the captain of the ship would come on the loudspeaker and tell the passengers when there was a whale sighting and which side of the ship to go to… everybody would drop everything to catch a glimpse, a spurt of water, a rounded back, anything. This sighting would be the topic of excited chatter from the remainder of the day.

Over the years I have been fortunate enough to see whales in their natural habitat off San Francisco and perhaps the most of all in South Africa. Sitting having lunch in several beachside restaurants, and much to the excitement of my then young sons, we saw pods of whales…sounding and playing, slapping their tails on the calm sea hard enough that we could hear them on shore. What an unbelievable treat, one I certainly will never forget.

Many years ago, we were with a friend on his boat fishing not far out from Chub Cay, Berry Islands, in the Tongue of the Ocean, when a Coast Guard helicopter flew low over us with a loud hailer and told us to “be careful of the whale”. And there, not that far

from us, we saw a big, big, big back, a flipper, an eye, a magnificent tail as he took a nice long look at us and sounded into the depths of the deepest blue sea. It was a moment of complete awe for everyone on board, as if we had been hand-picked to come in close contact with a force of nature so splendid and magnificent that there were no word. It was a divine and illuminating moment.

One interesting point that I did not know is that the whale is part of the order “Artiodactyla”, which includes hoofed animals (ungulates). So how is this possible when whales do not even have feet? What this is telling

Having an accurate count of types of whales is very complicated because some animals that are traditionally called whales are actually dolphins (a subset), and it is all a bit confusing for us humans.

There are whale sightings yearround in the Bahamas. The whales most likely to be seen here are the sperm whale (a toothed whale), which can grow as big as 60 feet long, and the pilot whale, which is frequently called blackfish. I have enjoyed many a boat trip surrounded by a massive pod of these inquisitive beauties of the sea who grow up to18 feet in length.

We also have the dese-beaked whale, but I don’t think I have ever been lucky enough to see one. Then you enter the ambiguous realm of dolphin/whales such as the Risso’s dolphin and the Atlantic spotted dolphin. Each and every one of these magnificent mammals inhabit our seas.

Whales are perhaps one of the first animals a child recognises, along with the distinct elephant, giraffe and zebra… so unique and unbelievably special.

As we take note of the health of our oceans, and the plunder of our seas because of the wanton use of plastics that are then disposed in careless and irresponsible manners, remember that everything we do to save our oceans also saves those amazing creatures who inhabit those very same oceans.
