Psalm 23:4 – What does this scripture mean to you?

The Book of Psalms, found in the Old Testament, is probably one of the most well-known sections of the Bible.

And among the 150 poems which are divided into five books is one psalm that is especially popular. It is known by both Christians and non-Christians alike. Parts of it have been quoted in movies and songs. It is Psalms

23:4:

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

Tribune Religion asked some of our readers to tell us why this psalm is personally important to them.

“This is the most confident scripture in the Bible for me. It confirms what God says in other parts of the Bible; that He is always with His people. By believing this verse, we don’t have to be fearful or afraid of anything because He will always order our steps and direct our paths,” said Kayshela Bullard.

For Stacey Gibson, a member of the Anglican Church, this scripture assures her that she is never alone, no matter what she is going through.

“Even though you may be walking through the valley…this verse is saying there is a way for you to get past the valley. Just know that you won’t always be there. This says that no matter what horrific situation comes your way, you will eventually get past it,” said Ms Gibson.

Tammy Hepburn said the scripture reminds her of the story that speaks about the three brave men: Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego.

She said: “It teaches us that though trouble may come, God is always with you. Even the story about Daniel in the lion’s den, God was with him. They might have been fearful, but they didn’t show it. God said if you are for me, I am in you. You are supposed to have the word in your

Giving her readers a sense of stability and peace is what author Jacqueline Smith-Joseph hopes to achieve with her new poetry book.

The book is called “Garment of Praise” and she hopes it “alters the life” of anyone who comes into contact with it.

Mrs Smith-Joseph was born in Nassau and raised in South Andros. She is the wife of Basil Joseph and mother of four children.

She has been writing poetry all of her life, but only recently decided to share her poems with the public.

“This book was written during the pandemic, a time when many people from all over the world lost their lives and a time of uncertainty. I found peace in writing poetry after being laid off for a period of five months. I later published this book,” she told Tribune Religion.

“Garment of Praise”, she explained, is made up of a collection of heartwarming and motivational recollections.

She hopes those who read her poems can allow themselves to be encouraged by what she shares.

The poems paint a vivid picture of how her surroundings in Andros and how island life inspired her spiritual journey.

“I pray that readers enjoy and are inspired by these poems to seek the Lord and one day visit the island of Andros, if they have not been there,” she said.

“In this book, I honour the late Rev Dr Felix L Smith and Ruthnell Smith, two wonderful people who sacrificed much during my upbringing to make sure that my siblings could make the most of what little they had. Even though it was not easy, growing up on the Family Island prepared me and helped me become the woman I am today.”

“ ‘Garment of Praise’ depicts how I was raised and the adventures I experienced on this picturesque island of Andros, which has so much to offer. However, most importantly, they highlight the value of morning devotion and prayer, which will sustain you throughout the years.”

The book, she said, symbolises not only where she has been, but also all of what she has been through. Now she can share freely with others in the hopes they derive courage from it to weather their own storms.

“Both young and old can relate to this,” she said. “This book's message is to never forget where you came from, to cherish life and the people around you, especially through difficult times. Give praise to God. You have the ‘Garment of Praise’ for the spirit of heaviness because God gave it to you,” she said.

The book is available for purchase at the Chapter One Bookstore and on Amazon.

HUNDREDS of individuals representing a number of churches as well as wellwishers from a number of communities assembled at the Evangelistic Temple church on Collins Ave on Sunday April 30, to pay tribute to community leader and pastor Rev Dr CB Moss.

The atmosphere was soaked in praise as people sang, danced and worshipped God, giving thanks to the Almighty for all the He has done in the life of Rev Moss.

A number of the nation’s leaders gave personal tributes to Rev Dr Moss as a former vice president of the Senate including Prime Minister Phillip Davis, former Prime Minister Hubert Minnis and former Prime Minister Perry Christie.

Dr Duane Sands, chairman of the Free National Movement and one of the primary doctors who assisted and oversaw the medical care of Rev Moss, gave a detailed report of the process Rev Moss endured following his collapse in St Agnes Church during the Majority Rule service on January 10, 2023.

Dr Sands shared how serious and grave Rev Dr Moss’ condition was, explaining how close to death the beloved Mt Olive Baptist Church pastor was on that day in January. Rev Dr Moss spent several weeks in a medically induced coma before he was eventually able to be released and continue his recovery at home.

In addition to political leaders, several of our

country’s well-known pastors also paid tribute to their ministerial colleague, including Bishop Delton Fernander, president of the Bahamas Christian Council; Rev Dr William Thompson, former president of the Bahamas Baptist Missionary & Educational Convention; Bishop Walter Hanchell, president of Great Commission Ministries; Bishop Simeon Hall, pastor emeritus of New Covenant Baptist Church; Dr David Burrows, senior pastor of Bahamas Faith Ministries International; Rev Terrance Morrison, senior pastor of Zion Baptist East and Shirley Street, and Pastor Mario Moxey, senior pastor of Bahamas Harvest Church.

Apostle Raymond Wells, senior pastor of Living Waters Kingdom Ministries, was successful in leading the charge in raising the offering for the evening, resulting in scores of individuals making

heart already and know that God is with you. God said things will rise up against you, but it is not going to prosper.”

Even though the world may be filled with evil, Aliyah Davis said people have to know that God has their back. She said you cannot be fearful of things of this world, because there is a higher power that keeps you covered, and that is God. Ms Davis said this is where people’s faith is tested, when they are faced with trouble and fears.

“You should be able to take on the world, not let the world take on you. The journey of life calls for miseries and trials, but it’s all a test. You don’t need anyone to believe in you but God. He will never forsake you,” said Ms Davis.

Jessica Turnquest added her view by saying: “This Bible verse is probably hanging in many Christian homes, and sometimes stamped on their car bumpers. It is very popular because it has so much meaning, and it’s also catchy. I learned it as a little girl and I never forgot it, and I will teach it to my children as well. I want them to know that God will never leave them, and whatever happens to them in terms of troubles, I want them to know that they are never alone.”

their way to the altar to generously to donate to Rev Dr CB Moss.

Music also played a vital role throughout the evening, creating several memorable moments in song by a number of well-known gospel artists representing a carefully selected blend of musical genres. Among these artists were Cat Island’s Rahming Brothers, upcoming gospel sensations Davian Chase and Eboni Praise, as well as well-known Bahamian entertainer Fred Munnings, who performed the classic “Life Every Voice & Sing”, one of Rev Dr Moss’ favourite songs. Several other award-winning artists also took centre stage, including Bishop Denczil Rolle & Friends, Rev Christopher Roberts, and Tamika Taylor, who along with Shaback, performed the global worship anthem “Never Lost a Battle” by Grammy Award winner CeCe Winans

Pastor Geoff Wood, senior pastor of Temple Baptist Church, opened the event in prayer and Rev Dr Vaughn Cash, senior pastor of the host church Evangelistic Temple, gave the official welcome. Pastor Alfred Stewart, senior pastor of the New Mt Zion Missionary Baptist Church, gave the benediction.

The event was produced by Kevin “Minister K” Harris and his new public relations and promotions firm Oracle Media Consultants. Mr Harris served as chairman of the organising committee that also included nationally known gospel recording artist and economist Edison Sumner; President of the Bahamas Gospel Music Awards (BGMA) Travis Edgecombe; musician JD Stewart, economist Sharmie Farrington Austin, and Senior Pastor of the Providence Baptist Church Rev Clinton Minnis. Churches, organisations and individuals who may still be interested in giving to Rev Dr Moss to help defray his medical and recovery costs, can do so by direct deposit to his personal bank account at Commonwealth Bank in the name of Carlton B. Moss, Oakes Field Branch, account number – 7033242402.

For those who may desire to submit a cheque to the family, can make the cheque payable to Carlton B. Moss and contact his son Carlton Moss Jr at 525-2420 to arrange for collection.
