Island designers given chance to take on the Big Apple

AHAMIAN designers have only two more weeks to submit their portfolios to be considered for the Islands of the World endof-year fashion showcase in New York.

As it is IWFW’s 10th anniversary, 10 established and emerging designers representing island nations around the globe will be selected.

To celebrate this milestone, organisers of the award-winning IWFW will host the event in New York City, November 1-2, under the theme “Paradise Takes a Bite of the Big Apple”.

The event is presented by the Small States Foundation and Exiles.

Designers based in or within origins in the island nations around the world will be featured in the historic venue of 4 West 43rd Street in a mosaic of fashion and culture, fusing creations ranging in style from resort and urban to red carpet and destination bridal fashions.

Since its inception in 2008, the event has been hosted in Nassau and has featured 75 designers representing 18 island nations and three non-island countries. The designers to be selected to present their work in New York will be those who have shown themselves ready for a global commercial presence.

According to Owen Bethel, principal producer of IWFW, the application and registration process has been open for all designers from the islands since January. The deadline for submission is May 31.

“All designers must be able to show that they have the ability to produce their garments commercially or are prepared to take measures to do the same under guidance from the organisers of the event,” he said.

“And in keeping with the ambience of island lifestyle, the emphasis is on resort wear designs – recognising that resort wear may encompass luxury

Designers are asked to place emphasis on resort wear for the show in New York this November. attire in swimwear, urban wear, lounge wear, casual and athletic wear, red carpet and formal attire, and of course, elegant destination or tropical bridal attire. So designers will have to show some level of specialisation or expertise in these elements of resort wear.

Those designers meeting the criteria of commercial viability and resort wear specialisation must then be able to commit financially to the event as there is a registration fee. In this regard several governments have stepped forward to cover the financial obligations of designers from their respective countries. From those designers who have applied and are eligible the selection committee must then narrow the field by ensuring that, as much as possible, there is a diverse representation of island-nations and geographical regions in the final line-up of designers chosen to present their collections.”

Designers are also encouraged not to be afraid in showing themselves as uniquely creative as this is what will make them stand out from the rest.

Mr Bethel also emphasised that having an opportunity to participate in the New York anniversary event could help propel the career of designers.

“It is every serious designer’s dream to present his/her collection before professionals in the trade, fashion editors, fashion trade media houses, merchandise buyers and agents in one of the recognised fashion capitals of the world. New York probably has the highest concentration of fashion trade professionals covering all aspects of the fashion industry,” he said.

“The immediate exposure of the designer’s work in this arena has tremendous potential for the designer and therefore provides unparalleled business networking opportunities.

It is an indication of a committed investment in his/her talent and career.

While some designers will have their own runway show during the event, others may opt to present their designs under the proprietary label of ‘Exiles’, which promotes a collective presentation of designers.”

Speaking with Cara Hunt, she explains how she went from experimenting with crochet jewellery to making women’s sartorial dreams come true.

S

tephanie Roberts-Treco is technically a YouTube success story. She may not be a beauty guru or gamer with millions of followers, but like so many others around the world, she has been able to use the social media platform to help her launch a lucrative career.

Her successful fashion brand Stephie Designs got its start when her brother one day made the off-hand remark that he liked a certain style of crocheted necklaces.

“We were talking about how do they make those and he said, ‘You should look on YouTube. Everything is on YouTube.’ And so I did and that is how I started making jewellery to sell,” she told Tribune Weekend.

The decision to begin a more creative career came at the perfect time for Stephanie.

“I was 37 and I was in Nassau running my company Omni Supplies, but I was ready for a change. It was the right time.”

When she and her husband left Nassau to run the Tilloo Pond Resort in Abaco, it seemed the best time to also try jewellery making in earnest.

“When we moved back to Abaco, God led me to this path. This is His work,” she said.

Stephanie started selling her designs at resorts around the island. She soon attracted quite a following of clients who fell in love with her creations and led her expand her offerings to a resort clothing line.

“I had taken some sewing in school, but nothing significant,” she said. “But I had some knit fabric and started

working with it. Knits are slippery and hard to work with it, but once you conquer it, it is a great fabric to work with and will mould to a woman and is very flattering.”

Stephanie launched her clothing line six years ago and it has been a tremendous success.

“It has been very successful, more successful than I could have ever imagined. I have clients from all over Nassau and the United States and Canada,” she said.

“I would make things to wear and people would say, ‘Oh, I want one like that!’ And I would say, ‘Let me make one for you’ and give it to them, but I

“The Lodge in Hope Town was the first to carry my jewellery then the Abaco Inn carried my resort wear and jewellery. In October 2014, I did the fashion show for the Pink Rose Ball to raise funds for breast cancer patients which was attended by 350 people.”

Stephanie has also volunteered her jewellery and clothing lines at the annual private show at the Nassau home of Charlotte Albury which benefits the Bahamas Humane Society.

She said that part of the appeal of the collection is the fabric choice.

“I only use knits, because it is the perfect fabric for the Bahamas for locals and visitors. It travels well and it is a fabric that fits people very well. I offer a couture clothing experience. I will take your measurements and create a garment that is tailor-made for you. So when a client tries on the dress, it is a perfect fit. I have had customers jump up and down and tell me I nailed it because they say that they didn’t know a garment could fit like that. But you know what, when you can get the butt and the boobs to look good, then you know you have nailed it,” she said.

“Bahamian women have a unique shape and knit fabric compliments us very well, and not all the clothing that are manufactured will work for us. I think that most women like the idea of having garment

tailored to fit them because we all have different shapes.”

When it comes to the design of her creations it remains all in the family.

“My daughter Lori Higgs-Thompson actually helps me with the designs. She is involved in Junkanoo and is an artist and a teacher, and so she works with me and we will brainstorm together about styles. Or one of us may get an idea and then share it and we say, ‘OK, we need to make a pattern for this right away,,” she said if their creative process.

Her second daughter is equally talented.

“My daughter Alana Higgs-Carol also makes crochet necklaces as well, but hers are with a different twist.”

Stephanie is currently working on garments for the Spring/Summer season ahead of her fashion show which will be held in a few weeks.

“For Spring, we have been doing a lot of straight-legged pants which are very sexy and fit every women’s body type. We also have another version of the pants in capri (length) and they look really good in floral prints, which is a big trend, and of course I do a lot of things in leopard print which is my favourite and my signature fabric. We are also doing the matching tops for the pants, and cold-shoulder and T-back tops are also very on-trend, as are tops with straight arms that flare at the bottom,” she said.

ou may not be among the 600 privileged guests to be invited inside St George’s Chapel to witness the royal tying of the knot of Prince Harry to American actress Meghan Markle tomorrow, but that does not mean that you cannot get into all the excitement surrounding the wedding of the year.

More than a billion people are expected to watch the ceremony either on TV or the internet, and since you will have to wake up super early (the ceremony starts at 7am Bahamian time), why not make a morning of it by

• TLC ‘s begins its four-hour coverage of the wedding ceremony at 5am. o celebrate the life of cultural icon Nettica “Nettie” Symonette on the occasion of her 84th birthday, the Central Bank of the Bahamas Art Gallery on Wednesday opened a retrospective exhibition of her work.

The show provides guests with a window into her evolution as a visual artist over the years as well as her life as a Bahamian grande dame. The exhibition aims to give context to the naïve, intuitive, gestural works that Nettie has become known for.

“The show is a body of works created from the conception of Nettie’s artistic journey up until as recently as last month. A retrospective show held on her birthday, May 16, made sense.

It was held as a mark of how far she has come and what she has achieved in her artistic career and life,” said Angelika Wallace-Whitfield, curator at the Central Bank of the Bahamas Art Gallery.

After years in the hospitality industry, specifically eco-tourism, in both New Providence and Abaco, Nettie has settled in New Providence on West Bay Street to devote herself to cultivating the ever-expanding Nettie’s Place. Operated and managed by herself and her family, Nettie’s Place is a treasure chest of art and cultural relics.

“It’s been said that out of adversity comes strength,” Nettie told Tribune Weekend, as she explained that it was at a crossroads in her life, while operating a thriving eco-tourism and heritage resort called Different of Abaco, that she discovered talents she did not know she had – the gifts of painting and writing.

“I firmly believe I’m spiritually led in all the works I’ve done. I was once told by an international arts professor that I possess a gift of colour coordination, something you cannot learn in school. My vision, combined with colours, has taken me from strength to strength.”

The artworks on display at this week’s exhibition included “Skeletons”, an acrylic on canvas piece which aims to show that all persons have skeletons in their closets, no matter how they try to hide them. Another piece called “Golden Boy” was made as thanks to of Sir G W K Roberts, founder and owner of City Lumber Yard, who paid Nettie’s tuition at age 15 to Government High School at a time when her own father refused to pay. Then there is a piece named “Talents”, which tells the story of how Bahamians are all blessed with talents but it is up to each individual how to use them.

The acrylic on canvas piece entitled “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” came from a place of deep emotion for Nettie. She cried for 10 days when developing this work. “I cried, feeling the pain for my country. On the eighth day, my eldest daughter said, ‘Mommy please, don’t cry anymore’,” said Nettie.

A cultural activist, entrepreneur and storyteller, Nettie over her lifetime has been honoured with many awards, including the Order of Merit, Order of British Empire, numerous Cacique Awards, and the Bahamas Hotel and Tourism Association’s first Hotelier of the Year Award.

In 1976, she was crowned the Most Outstanding Woman in Business, and in 2002 she was named a living legend by the local branch of Zonta International. She is a lifetime director of the Bahamas Out Island Promotion Board and the Bahamas Hotel and Tourism Association.

Today, Nettie’s Place boasts art that adorns the walls, ceilings, tables and floors. And Nettie has a story to accompany each piece, whether it be how it came to be, what inspired her work, or an anecdote of what was occurring in her life at the time of creating it. A stroll through the property will educate any visitor on the rich cultural history of this country that has, as Nettie explains, become diluted through time and technology.

The exhibition remains opens at the Central Bank of the Bahamas Art Galley until May 30.

Get up close and personal with a poet

RICKA Pierre wants her passion for her work to be seen, felt and heard during a special reading and book signing event this weekend.

The Bahamian author will share excerpts from latest book, “The Pain of Pleasure”, from 12noon to 2pm tomorrow at the Logos Bookstore.

She is inviting all those who love poetry to attend the book signing. A special gift will also be given to the first 50 to arrive.

During the book signing, guests will have the opportunity to meet Ericka and hear first-hand about the inspiration behind her poetry.

The author invites all those who attend to share their thoughts and also put forth questions they may have about her writing.

“Many times when reading poetry readers draw their own interpretations from a poem. But I will provide my readers an opportunity to hear from me, the author, allowing them to see, feel and know my passion behind each poem,” she told Weekend.

“The Pain Of Pleasure” is a collection of poems which revolve around both the pleasurable and the painful journeys people go through.

Themes of love, hurt, forgiveness, loss, pain and finding freedom run the poems. Ericka will read poems “Deep Lost, Hurt”, “The Nerve of You”, “Shattered Towel” and “Night Passion”.

“Two major events in my life inspired me to create a book of all my poems written over the years. The first was a death of a staff member, the late Dominique Theodor Bullard. We as the management team created a tribute board in her honour and I wrote a poem dedicated to Dominique. The poem was read and appreciated by many, mainly the Breakwater staff. They value it and kept motivating me to write a book,” she said.

It was then that I made up my mind to write my very own children’s story book. Poetry was inspired by me just expressing my feelings, and it grew over the years, whether in pain, sadness, joy or grief. I encouraged myself to write about it,” she said.

In addition to writing poems, Ericka loves reciting them, and is currently honing her skills in the art of spoken word. Her dream is to perform spoken word poetry at different venues in Nassau, including hotels.

“Right now I am preparing to make that first move in making my dream a reality,” she said.

At the same time Ericka is working on children’s books and a romance suspense novel.

The children’s book, a collection of short stories that focus on the adventures of a little girl who has special problem-solving powers, is expected to be published before the year is out.

Dreams comes true for Bahamian filmmaker

t was a night on which dreams came true night for Dario Poitier, who was named the Bahamas Film Festival’s 2018 Rising Star as he celebrated the sold-out debut of his film “Ungrateful” at Atlantis last Saturday.

For the up-and-coming producer, it was a beautiful occasion that allowed him the opportunity to fulfil his yearslong dream of transitioning from playwright to filmmaker.

And he was genuinely moved that audiences at the red carpet event asked for a second part to the film.

Guests came from near and far for the screening. Some even flew in from Ohio and New York.

“The turnout was unbelievable.

The movie was viewed by a sold-out audience who was not just wowed by a Dario Erics Production, but a royal Atlantis welcome powered by ALIV. The crowd was a mixture of all classes and races. It was good to come

A highlight of the night was a surprise presentation made by the Bahamas Film Festival and Bahamasair.

“The Bahamas Film Festival honoured me as the 2018 recipient of the Rising Star Award. The audience then erupted with cheers. The presentation was done by Celi Moss. Bahamasair then made a gift presentation which

included free travel amongst other items. We had shot a scene on one of Bahamasair’s aircraft. For me it was a proud moment to have the national flag carrier in my movie,” he said.

“Ungrateful”, the filmmaker explained, holds a mirror up to the many Bahamian parents who have invested their all in their children, only to receive disappointment in return.

The film tells the story of Miss Milly (Tamara Marie Simms), who places all her hopes and dreams in her only son, Sam (Nathan J Burrows).

She sacrifices her life’s savings and even re-mortgages her home to help him, expecting Sam to return from the United States one day and pave the way for her financial freedom and an early retirement.

“People were wowed by (the film’s) quality and the message that it sends.

Persons left saying they need to revisit their relationship with their parents because the film made them think deep and cried,” said Dario. “It touched their hearts and it is a must-see for everyone. It played with (the audience’s) emotions because at one point they were laughing uncontrollably and

Dario said movie-goers were also impressed to see a full-length 100 per cent Bahamian made film on the big screen, complete with authentic Bahamian accents and stunning aerial shots showing the beauty of the country.

“We had a question and answer segment after the movie and we literally had to stop taking questions because the guests were so intrigued,” he said.

“There were several highlights at the premiere that stood out. To see my audience not rush out and wanting more, and immediately asking for a part two, made me feel special.”

Spike Lee’s electric ‘BlacKkKlansman’ premieres at Cannes CANNES, France (AP) — Spike Lee’s Ku Klux Klan crime drama “BlacKkKlansman” received a rousing, lengthy standing ovation at the 71st Cannes Film Festival.

Lee’s film tells truelife tale of a black police detective in Colorado who infiltrates the local chapter of the Ku Klux Klan.

It was among the most highly anticipated titles at Cannes this year and immediate reaction was positive.

“BlacKkKlansman” ties its story to the violent protests of Charlottesville,

Virginia. It stars Denzel Washington’s son, John David Washington, alongside Adam Driver and Topher Grace, who plays David Duke.

Lee was outfitted in a shiny purple-and-orange tuxedo and wore one ring declaring “love” on one hand, and “hate” on the other. He bounced into the premiere announcing: “Brooklyn’s in the house!”

The “love” and “hate” rings pay homage to his film “Do The Right Thing”; the same jewellery was worn by character Radio Raheem.

Insane as ever, ‘Deadpool 2’ doesn’t disappoint DEADPOOL 2 RUNNING TIME: 119 MINS

A

t a recent screening of “Deadpool 2,” the audience didn’t get up when the end credits came up, patiently sitting through the scrolling names of visual effects supervisors and lighting specialists.

Real “Deadpool” fans know to stick around until the ushers toss them out.

That’s because the filmmakers aren’t content with containing their sprawling, anarchic and subversive hero in any conventional box. No, in the world of Deadpool, even the boring end credits are studded with jokes and teases.

So hold onto your seats as Ryan Reynolds once more dons the red suit and katana swords for this saucy, overstuffed and very entertaining sequel to the 2016 massive hit “Deadpool,” which became the second-highest grossing R-rated film domestically after “The Passion of the Christ.” How do we know that? Deadpool happily brags about it in the new film, continuing his breaking-the-fourth-wall humour.

Just some of the other things that get derided this time are “Yentl,” ‘‘Frozen,” ‘‘Stranger Things,” Wolverine, Jared Kushner, cultural appropriation, Brad Pitt, the Norwegian band A-ha, “Basic Instinct,” ‘‘Robocop,” fanny packs, “Say Anything,” dubstep, “Sharknado” and Reynolds himself, who mocks his disastrous earlier decision to play Green Lantern.

“Deadpool 2” is as gruesome and violent as the first, but perhaps the

And, as a Marvel property, he especially delights in lampooning D.C. Comics. “So dark,” Deadpool says to another superhero.

“Are you sure you’re not from the DC Universe?”

In this film, which reunites the original writing team of Rhett Reese and Paul Warnick, we begin by finding our unkillable mercenary in the same domestic bliss where we left him. But if “Deadpool” was an origin story, “Deadpool 2” is a quest tale and our hero this time encounters the time travelling soldier Cable (Josh Brolin), a motley crew of mutants he calls X-Force — “Isn’t that a little derivative?” someone asks snarkily — and various superheroes and mutants, all set to a lively soundtrack that includes Air Supply, Peter Gabriel, “Annie” and an original song with filthy lyrics.

If something can be oddly sweet while heads are being decapitated, it’s this film.

Some favourites from the first film are back — some only briefly — such as housemate Leslie Uggams, girlfriend Morena Baccarin and cab driver Karan Soni. The new characters don’t have time to make much of an impression, except for Zazie Beetz from “Atlanta”

Deadpool, of course, helps us along the film’s convoluted plot with such post-modern cracks as “Big CGI fight coming up!” or the put-down, “That’s just lazy writing” or, after a cool sequence, “Tell me they got that in slow motion.” Director David Leitch replaces Tim Miller but there’s been no noticeable change in tone or corrosion in the franchise’s terrific special effects.

If anything, the surprising success of the original has resulted in more money and more insane sequences, like a chase sequence with a truck convoy and a bizarre scene when Deadpool’s legs regrow after he is cut in half, giving him baby limbs for a time.

Reynolds is once again at his arch and nihilist best here, while acting and jumping in so much facial prosthetics that it makes him look like he’s inside melted cheese — or, as the first movie put it, an avocado that had relations with an older avocado.

To really appreciate “Deadpool 2” you have to have seen the original and probably every other Marvel superhero film, too. And be up on pop culture, from Cher to Broadway musicals. (It’s a good thing there’s no quiz at the end.) Speaking of ends, don’t embarrass yourself by getting up to leave when it seems to be over.

And get ready to happily sit through “Deadpool 3,” too.

A scoundrel is born in Star Wars spinoff ‘Solo’ SOLO RUNNING TIME: 135 MINS

I

f there’s one takeaway from “Solo: A Star Wars Story ,” it’s that our favourite scoundrel had been through a lot before he ever met up with Luke, Obi-Wan and Leia.

Sure, he’d talked up his Kessel Run time and out-maneuvering Imperial ships, but this film contains at least three epic set-pieces, involving a job atop a high-speed train careening around a snowy mountain, a fiery space showdown with a squid-like super monster and an explosion-filled shootout, that are so spectacular that they have the effect of making what Han ends up going through in “Episode IV” and beyond seem suspiciously tame by comparison. Bigger, louder, and more, more, more seem to be the guiding principles of the film and while on their own they might make a pleasurable romp, it’s dubious as to whether or not these pre-Skywalker adventures have really added anything of value to the character.

There’s an argument to be made that it might even undermine his hero’s arc in the first film.

It’s the overriding issue with “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” which had baggage from the get-go. Unlike a character from a book or a play, Han Solo didn’t exist outside of Harrison Ford, and the two are now linked by over 40 years of goodwill and nostalgia. Although no character is so precious that they can’t break from the actor who made them memorable — even Indiana Jones had two younger versions of himself — it’s still not an enviable position to be in.

Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian You’re at a disadvantage before you start.

The man who took the job, Alden Ehrenreich, does not look or sound like Ford, and it’s difficult to adjust at the beginning. You can’t help but scrutinise every gesture, every smirk, every aside as you try to get used to him. Eventually you do, and the talented Ehrenreich wins you over with his execution, capturing Han’s spirit, his sarcasm, egotism and charm with apparent ease.

Co-written by Star Wars royalty Lawrence Kasdan and his son Jonathan Kasdan, “Solo: A Star Wars Story” introduces Han on his home planet of Corellia, where he serves under a local mob boss and dreams of

fleeing, becoming a pilot and owning a ship.

The early scenes are incredibly dark, literally. Shot by cinematographer Bradford Young, it’s an interesting aesthetic choice, likely meant to lend a vintage vibe, but also distracting as though you’re watching a worn VHS copy of “Episode IV,” where faces are only clear in extreme close-up and even then it’s still through a thick layer of fog and gauze (it clears up eventually).

Young Han is scrappy and overconfident and makes things up as he goes along, unafraid to lie or trust his gut.

It’s how he ends up not only getting out, but escaping military service and hooking up with a band of outlaws led

by Tobias Beckett (Woody Harrelson), who functions as mentor and possible cautionary tale for the impressionable Han. They’ll soon meet up with the man Beckett is working for, Dryden Vos (Paul Bettany), and encounter Han’s old friend from Corellia, Qi’ra (Emilia Clarke) before taking off on a dangerous smuggling mission.

There’s a lot for fans to digest as the film speeds through a check-list of Han’s origin components, like how he meets Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo), Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover) and how he comes across the Millennium Falcon. There are other key elements that probably are best left to the experience.

And that experience, in director Ron Howard’s very capable hands, is a largely enjoyable one.

“Solo” is a straightforward piece of pulpy entertainment with some very agreeable performances from Ehrenreich and Glover, who seems to be having the most fun of all the actors in playing up Lando’s suave demeanour, and fun classic Western flourishes, despite the excessively big action sequences.

The best moments in “Solo” are the simpler ones: The romance, the friendships, the clashing egos. Perhaps a lesson for the inevitable sequel.

Feathery white dresses seem to be on-trend right now.

While I normally love Lupita in her signature bold jewel tones, I must say this white looks fantastic as well. I love the almost completely sheer top with the high neck neck.

The updo also complements the silhouette of the gown perfectly.”

Cara says: “Lupita has slayed the red carpet again. I am in love with this entire look – the ponytail puff, the detail of the bodice, and the skirt, which seems like it should be too much all together but in reality is perfection. I think this is one off my favourite looks on her.”

Karin says: “She looks like the definition of ‘awkward’.

The dress is not hideous, but the length and cut of the dress do not flatter at all. And then there’s that two-toned, greased back hair. Now that is hideous. One good thing though: she took her heels off right after this in protest of the ridiculous dress code for women.”

Cara says: “I am convinced that Kristen just doesn’t care about critics, she just wears what she likes. This outfit looks like she fell into some thumb tacks that stuck to half her outfit. It looks cheap and uninspiring...even if it is Chanel.”

Karin says: “This is what she should have worn to the ‘Heavenly Bodies’ Met Gala the other day. It’s very froufy (and very, very sheer). It reminds of an outfit I wore for my angel costume as a kid one Halloween. Still, it’s pretty. Except for maybe the shoulder flounces which make it look like she’s missing some wings.”

Cara says: “I see this dress and I am reminded of those furry dressing gowns from the 1970s. You know, the ones with the matching slippers.

I’m not feeling it. The hair is nice, but it’s just too fluffy for my taste.”

Karin says: “I’ve never really gotten over the 80s style trauma attached to balloon skirts. This is a very bombastic dress; loud and big. I like the floral pattern and the riot of colour, but I still can’t make myself love that tucked-under hem and the resulting bubble effect.”

Cara says: “I like the ongoing high-low trend, but sometimes it doesn’t work. Cate is doing it right. I love this dress, especially the fabric. Big bold flowers can sometimes be tricky, but the design and the pattern of this dress are perfect for Spring.”

Karin says: “She looks a bit washed out due to her Khaleesi hair (she’s filming the final GoT season, eek!), but the platinum blonde does look good with the deep dark purple. I like the dress, but it’s nothing special.

Cannes is usually the place where we see some big unique numbers.”

Cara says: “The colour is lovely and the neckline is interesting.

I am even OK with the granny panties peeking out (at least they are the same colour), but I am unsure about those tulle sleeves. Looks like the designer just had some extra fabric they were trying to use up..”

Animal lovers get down to party for a good cause

T

he Bahamas Humane Society last Friday hosted its fundraiser ‘Party for the Animals’ to celebrate the winners of the 2017 B-humane awards and to present them with their plaques.

More than 170 guests turned out for the fun bash at Montague Gardens which featured dinner, dancing, adult hoop-la and a door prize.

Each year, the B-humane awards are given to those in the community who have gone above and beyond for the wellbeing of animals. This year, the recipients were Shelley Hardman, who was presented with the New Providence Award; Sally Gamble, who won the Out Islands Award; Super Value, which received the Corporate Award, and Jim Crosby, the International Award winner. Mr Crosby was unable to attend due to an illness in the family. He will receive his award at a later date.

A ‘thank you’ to moms

ll across the company, BTC celebrated their own moms just in time for Mothers’ Day. Across every island and cay, BTC took the time to thank and recognise mothers. In New Providence, ladies were treated to massages, and throughout the Family Islands team members received indigenous gifts. In Andros, mothers were presented with native floral arrangements and baskets.

Manager for Public Relations Indira Collie said: “Our people are our number one priority and we are always looking for ways to thank and recognise them.

We thought it fitting to place a special emphasis on our moms.

All across the country we recognised mothers in unique ways.

Every single island did something different, and we want to say happy Mothers’ Day to all of the phenomenal moms in BTC and throughout the country!”

Herbs for Summer One of the distinct advantages of home gardening, says Jack Hrady, is having herbs to serve most of your recipe needs

T

he culling of a bunch of parsley, the snipping of thyme – these are prerequisites for the perfect meal.

Unfortunately, many of our herbs are plants that originated in temperate latitudes and grow very well during our cooler months but suffer – and usually die – in our summer conditions.

There are exceptions, of course.

Mexican oregano, Mexican tarragon and Spanish thyme thrive in summer.

Mexican tarragon foliage dies off now and then but re-grows from its crown almost immediately. These tropical herbs have been a mainstay in the islands over the years when regular culinary herbs were not available.

Many of our herbs come from the Mediterranean region which is less humid than our conditions. We can shade our plants to a degree but we cannot reduce the outdoor humidity.

We have such sultriness in Summer that it is practically impossible to air dry herbs for storage without a fan. It is these herbs that need protection.

I have noticed that it is common practice locally to grow most, if not all, herbs on containers rather than in a herb garden. This makes relocation of herbs from full sun to part shade much easier. If your herbs are in a garden they will have to be potted and allowed

Always use the finest potting soil in a container that is somewhat larger than you would use in the cooler months so it will hold more water.

Ideally your relocated potted herbs should be in a position to receive morning and evening full sun but full shade at midday and early afternoon.

With the sun almost directly above during Summer month early afternoons, this is easier to accomplish than it sounds.

Watering must be done carefully and given some thought. Most of our herb fatalities are caused by over-watering yet the impulse during summer will be to keep the plants well watered. Do not use saucers with your pots as these are designed to retain water. Allow your potted herbs to drain freely.

Parsley can take a lot of water but thyme hates too much water. It would be a good idea to put your water-loving plants separate from those that prefer dry conditions and water each set appropriately.

Now the individual plants. Parsley is a biennial and lasts for two years if it gets through Summer. Do not expect your summer Italian parsley to be as handsome as your Spring parsley and cut off any stalks that show patchiness or imperfections. Our aim is to get the plants well into the second year and be serviceable until the new season

parsley is ready for use. Water parsley every two days and when you cut it for use cut low, about 1 inch above soil level. Curly parsley is less likely to survive than Italian parsley.

Chives are onions that seem to last forever. Some people make the mistake of planting them too close together in a pot. Ideally the space between plants should be about two inches and this allows the chives to grow to full size and thickness. Water every two days and always cut at about the two-inch mark above soil level.

Thyme plants sown last fall should now have woody stems and a large root system. Water thyme sparsely about twice a week and watch for yellowing of the small leaves as an indication of too little water. Always cut from the outside branches of your thyme plant.

Harvesting from the middle can kill.

Over-watering will definitely kill.

Sage should have about half of its leaves trimmed once placed in a shady location. Dry these in an oven with a pilot light or use a commercial dehydrator. Dried sage is used far more often for seasoning than fresh sage.

Water twice a week.

Spearmint grows better in cool conditions but will survive summer quite readily in the shade. Water every two days.

Pot celery loves water. Use a saucer.

Water the plants every day. Break all the rules.

Most of the other culinary herbs are annuals and these will die naturally but can be sustained for a while if their planting date was quite recent. Dill, some types of oregano, marjoram and chervil are all in this group.

Cilantro is a special case. It grows quickly and seeds quickly so must be grown to an ongoing schedule in both cool and hot seasons. If you must have cilantro available all the time then you should make new sowings every three weeks, the number you grow depending upon your volume of use. Leave the established plants you have in full sun and sow from new seeds in the shade. You will have a sort of conveyer belt process going: pots newly seeded, pots with seedlings, pots with useable cilantro, pots with flowers, and pots with coriander seeds.

The coriander seeds will allow you to complete the cycle and keep your cilantro going. There will be many more coriander seeds than you will ever need so grind some of them and – with a few additions – make your own curry powder.

When should you make the move of your herbs from full sun to shade? I would suggest right now, or as soon as possible.

A glittering display of national pride

HE road to the crown continued last Saturday as the Miss World Bahamas team hosted one of its most anticipated preliminary events.

The costume competition, always one of the most colourful and creative segments, was held at British Colonial Hilton in the Windsor Room. Showing national pride, the 10 contestants chose to appear as ‘The Morton Salt Girl’, an ‘Authentic Bahamian Bride’, ‘A Gateway To Paradise’, ‘The Androsian Queen’, ‘Queen of the Goombay Festival’, ‘The Coral Echantress’ more.

The competition’s top three finalists were Miss World Ragged Island Desiree Edwards who represented “The Bahamian Jewel, The Rising Sun,” a costume that vividly depicts the golden Bahamian sunrise in all its magnificent glory; Miss World University of the Bahamas Shelly Elisee, took to the runway as “The Lady In Yellow”, a costume that represents the country’s national flower, the Yellow Elder, and Miss World Long Island Angel Cartwright, who wowed the audience in her “Yuma Goddess of The Shallow Shores” costume which was inspired by one of the many Arawak goddesses born from the natural treasures of the sea with the power to shift the tides and calm strong winds.

The costume competition’s winner will be announced at the finale at Atlantis on Sunday, May 27.

“The showcase was nothing short of spectacular. The costumes represented a magnificent display of the culture of the Bahamas. The contestants displayed great originality in the design and execution of their individual themes,” said Jerome Sawyer, vice president of the Miss Bahamas Organisation.

“Combined with performances, the audience was entertained by the diversity of themes and designs. While the costume competition doesn’t count towards overall scores to determine the semi-finalists, it does show us which contestants can display costumes well in competition. It gives the audience another opportunity to enjoy our contestants in an intimate and fun setting.”

As this year’s overall theme is “Bejewelled”, Mr Sawyer said it was the team’s goal to capture the beauty of the Bahamas through the beautiful contestants.

“Precious stones and gems start out in the earth and must be mined, refined, polished and buffed before they are transformed into precious stones. This certainly epitomises the process our contestants go through on their journey to the crown,” he said.

“Over the years we have endeavoured to raise the level of competition while giving our contestants an experience that is on par with an international competition. We have an

impressive cadre of sponsors who help us to make this journey even more spectacular, a far cry from our early days when we struggled, often at great personal expense, to provide the best possible experiences we could for our contestants and title holders.”

He said the organisation also offers an impressive list of prizes as well, including employment for a year with The Island Game Foundation. For Mr Sawyer, having to coordinate so many different preliminaries is challenging and represents a huge responsibility, however, the team also get an immense amount of satisfaction from watching the evolution of the contestants.

“While we encourage each contestant to give it 100 per cent all the way through, we also want the ladies to all to walk away better for the experience. The kind of exposure these ladies receive is priceless. It is the kind of experience that can change the course of your life. We have watched former contestants

go on to become great women partly due to their experiences in the Miss Bahamas Organisation system. I think any young lady who enters a pageant should embrace every single opportunity presented.

Our contestants are poised to be a part of a life changing journey,” said Mr Sawyer.

Upcoming events include the evening gown competition, set to take place this Saturday at The Balmoral from 7pm, and the swimsuit and top model competition at Compass Point on Monday, May 21, beginning 6 pm.

Ten districts are represented in this year’s contest including Abaco - Alexis Denoye; Andros - Angel Culmer; Balmoral Island - Chinasa Outten; Crystal Cay - Alexis Sawyer; Grand Bahama - Serena Green; Long Island - Angel Cartwright; New Providence - Brinique Gibson; Ragged Island - Desire Edwards; San Salvador - Caitlyn Walker, and University of the Bahamas Shelly Elisee.

literary lives – arthur c clarke

A prophet of the future Sir Christopher Ondaatje tells us of the British science fiction writer and futurist who was the co-author of the screenplay for “2001: A Space Odyssey” and whose ideas influenced modern science.

A

rthur C Clarke was born in Minehead, Somerset, on December 16, 1917, and was educated at Huish Grammar School in Taunton. His early days were spent on a farm dreaming, collecting cigarette cards, became interested in fossils, and avidly read American science fiction magazines. He was fascinated by David Lasser’s book “The Conquest of Space”.

started contributing articles on spacecraft and travel to the Association’s journal Urania. He had a wild imagination, was influenced by Walt Disney’s film “Fantasia”, and foresaw spacecraft and space travel. In 1936, he moved to London and got a job with the Board of Education.

Clarke joined the Royal Air Force when the Second World War broke out as a radar specialist from 1941 to 1946, and helped with the important instigation of the radar defence system which contributed significantly to the RAF’s success in the Battle of Britain. Initially, Clarke was a corporal instructor at the Radio School in Yatesbury, Wiltshire, but was in 1943 commissioned as a pilot officer. He was eventually appointed chief training instructor at the RAF base in Honiley, Warwickshire, and demobilised with the rank of flight lieutenant.

After the war, Clarke won a fellowship and went to King’s College in London where he graduated with a first-class degree in mathematics and physics. For a while, after he left King’s College, Clarke was an assistant editor at Physics Abstracts – a British trade publication – before he became chairman of the British Interplanetary Society from 1946 to 1947, and again from 1951 to 1953.

While there, he advanced the theory of geostationary satellites and that they would be ideal for telecommunications relays. Although he was not the originator of this idea he circulated the theory to all technical members of the Interplanetary Society and the concept was published in Wireless World in 1945. He also wrote a number of nonfiction books about rocketry and space flights, among them “Interplanetary Flight” (1950), “The Exploration of Space” (1951), and “The Promise of Space” (1968). In recognition of these contributions, the geostationary orbit 22,000 miles above the equator is officially recognised by the International Astronomical Union as the Clarke Orbit.

Clarke married a 22-year-old Florida divorcee who had a young son in 1953, but they separated after six months.

In 1956, he travelled to the island of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and fell in love with a Sri Lankan man named Leslie Ekanayake. He first lived in the

coastal town of Unawatuna, but later moved to Colombo. Clarke lived in Sri Lanka for the rest of his life, became a skilled scuba diver, photographing regional reefs, and even discovering the ruins of an ancient temple. He documented these experiences in “The Coast of Coral” (1956) and “The Reefs of Taprobane” (1957). His writing and lectures greatly helped the tourism business on the island, and he was one of the founders of Underwater Safaris.

Clarke was stricken with polio in the mid 1950s, after which his attention reverted back to space. Polio curtailed his mobility, but the 1960s saw many of his projects come to fruition. “Profiles of the Future” was published in 1962 in which he predicted inventions that were likely to happen before the year 2001. In 1963, the Franklin Institute awarded him the Ballantine Award for his contribution to satellite technology.

The next year, 1964, the Syncom 3 satellite broadcast the Summer Olympic Games in Japan to the United States of America.

In 1964, Clarke’s reputation in all things in space led to the collaboration for which he is best known. Together with Stanley Kubrick, the renowned film director, he began work on a screenplay adaptation of his short story “The Sentinel” which would eventually become the epic 1968 science-fiction classic film “2001: A Space Odyssey”, which many consider to be among the best movies ever made. Both Clarke and Kubrick received an Academy Award nomination for their script, which they developed into a novel published in the same year.

Clarke followed this with literary sequels: “2010: Odyssey Two” (1982), adapted into a 1984 film; “2061: Odyssey Three” (1987), and “3001: The Final Odyssey”, published in 1997.

Eventually, on July 20, 1969, Clarke was invited to join Walter Cronkite in a real-life space odyssey for CBS for the Apollo II moon landing. He returned to the network for the subsequent Apollo 13 and Apollo 15 missions.

Clarke, now an internationally renowned author, continued his successful literary career in the 1970s.

“Rendezvous with Rama” (1973) won the Nebula and Hugo awards, as did “The Fountains of Paradise” (1979). In the 1980s, he completed his two autobiographical books, “Ascent to Orbit” (1984) and “Astounding Days” (1989).

He also appeared as the host of the TV shows “Arthur C Clarke’s Mysterious World” (1981) and “Arthur C Clarke’s World of Strange Powers” (1984).

“2001: A Space Odyssey” was inspired by Clarke’s short story “The Sentinel”.

“2001: A Space Odyssey” is often named among the best films of the 20th century.

In 1986, Clarke was named a Grand Master by the Science Fiction Writers of America.

Clarke was diagnosed with postpolio syndrome in 1988 and was confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. He was for many years a vicepatron of the British Polio Fellowship.

In the 1989 Queen’s Birthday Honours list he was appointed a Commander of the British Empire (CBE). The same year he became the first chancellor of the International Space University, serving from 1989 to 2004. He also served as chancellor of Moratuwa University in Sri Lanka from 1979 to 2002.

In the last decade of his life Arthur C Clarke was knighted by the British High Commissioner in Sri Lanka (May 26, 2000) and was granted the country’s highest civil honour, the Sri Lankabhimanya. He also witnessed the founding of the Arthur C Clarke Institute for Space Education.

Clarke died of respiratory failure in Sri Lanka on March 19, 2009, stemming from post-polio syndrome. He was 90 years old. By that time he had written nearly 100 books together with countless essays and short stories. Just Continues on page 24

a few days before he died he reviewed the manuscript of his final work, “The Last Theorem”, which was published posthumously later that year. He was buried in Colombo in traditional Sri Lankan fashion. Many thousands attended his funeral and knew him as a man who lived beyond this world and beyond this time – a man who could dream and imagine the inconceivable – and then write about it.

He acknowledges he has quoted freely from Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame; “Books and Writers” (2015) by Petri Liukkonen, and from Wikipedia.

• In 1964, he predicted the coming of the internet and video phone calling. Satellite technology, he said, “will make possible a world in which we can be in instant contact wherever we may be. Where we can contact our friends anywhere on earth, even if we don’t know their actual physical location. It will be possible in that age, possibly 50 years from now, for a man to conduct his business from Tahiti or Bali just as well as he could from London.” He also foresaw the wonders of e-medicine: “One day, we might have brain surgeons in Edinburgh operating on patients in New Zealand.”

• Also in 1964, he predicted the coming of the 3-D printer. By 2040, he said, we will have a universal replicator which will allow us to create any object at all in the comfort of our own homes.

This, he said, will result in the phasing out of agriculture and industry, and work itself. On the flip side, there will be an explosion of arts, entertainment and education.

• In a 1974 interview with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Clarke accurately predicted many things that became reality, including online banking and shopping.

Responding to a question about how the interviewer’s son’s life would be different, Clarke said: “He will have, in his own house, not a computer as big as this (pointing to nearby computer), but at least a console through which he can talk through his friendly local computer and get all the information he needs for his everyday life, like his bank statements, his theatre reservations, all the information you need in the course of living in our complex modern society, this will be in a compact form in his own house ... and he will take it as much for granted as we take the telephone.”

• By 2030, Clarke said he expected artificial intelligence to have reached human level, that we will have landed on Mars and that computer-generated DNA will make possible dinosaur facsimiles – a real-life Jurassic Park scenario. He also seemed to have predicted the recent advancements in virtual reality technology, saying that he envisioned a neurological “braincap” that allows us the direct sensory experience of anything we imagine and immerse ourselves in movies to the point where it becomes a real experience.

Frederick Street and the Lucerne Hotel Forgotten facts Paul C Aranha

have just finished enjoying two important new books on Bahamian history: “Breaching the Gates” by Sean McWeeney, which provided new details about my parents’ ancestors, Neil McQueen, and Rosette, Samuel, James and John Minns. Then, “Gateways to the New World” by Dr Keith L Tinker throws an entirely new light on the history of these islands, including his section on ‘Prohibition’ and ‘Bootlegging’, a subject with tight links to the Lucerne Hotel, once located on Frederick Street, on the site now occupied A view of Frederick Street (Courtesy of Steve Albury)

The building partially seen on the right is Lightbourn House. The Lucerne Hotel was next door to Lightbourn House and my friend Ronald G Lightbourn is a living authority on these two properties. Ron, a retired professional photographer, provided me with this selection of his pictures of them.

Dr Tinker quotes from “The Real McCoy”: “The Lucerne was a rambling framed hotel, bowered in palm trees.

Before the advent of bootleggers, it had been a prim, quiet hostelry...the chief justice and other folk of great respectability lived there. Most of these had departed by one door, when the bootleggers entered by the other... but the chief justice stayed on. No one ever understood why. For a servant of the law, it must have been a hideous existence. Nowhere, outside of a boiler factory, was there a less quiet building than the Lucerne, during the gang’s heyday.”

Dr Tinker goes on to say, “The proprietor of the Lucerne, a small grey-haired, bespectacled and matronly woman, Mrs Sweeting, was credited with being the only person in the colony that the gangsters truly respected. They affectionately called her ‘Mother’... their nightly habit was a dice game in the hotel bar. This sometimes reached a peak of a thousand dollars a point and emotions were aroused...blackjacks were flourished, brass knuckles left their imprint, and pistol butts creased skulls...Mother came in as the conflict approached climax, walked to the middle of the room and clapped her hands together... said, quite calmly, ‘Boys, if this keeps up, I must ask Tommy to close the bar for the night.’...Blood was staunched.

Weapons were put away...the dice were rattled, bills were tossed and bets covered, but in muted ashamed voices.

When the Lucerne Hotel and Lightbourn House were demolished around 1960, the face of Frederick Street was changed, forever.

Another claimant to the title of the real McCoy is one William S McCoy, a smuggler of illicit liquor during the American Prohibition era, who is said to have gone against the shady habit of rum runners of the time of watering down their alcohol in order to maximise profits. William McCoy, by contrast, became famous for never watering his booze, and selling only real top-quality products. As a result, some have, unsurprisingly, declared him as the real Real McCoy.

years assume for a moment that they are qualified to perform any of a veterinarian’s duties, much the less perform surgery? These so-called street vets need to be stripped of their rather dashing and glamorous title, the mere title evokes some form of acceptance

ove over, Thor! My name’s Zeus, and I’m going to be top dog in this pack!” Zeus is a smaller-sized 10-month-old potcake, waiting patiently at the Bahamas Humane Society for his forever home. While he has reached a truce with his kennelmate, Bodie, Zeus would prefer to be an only dog in his new digs.

He’s smart, he’s alert, and he will be a good watchdog for his people. Zeus knows he’s welcome to stay at the BHS as long as need be, since it is a no-kill shelter, but really he would like some people to call his own.

o many things keep happening in the animal world in the Bahamas that every time I want to write an upbeat and positive article, I am faced with the very real dilemma of feeling I owe it to my readers to discuss, and frequently reveal, what is really going on in the country.

Only this week another unimaginable story hit the press. A beautiful and loved white pit bull female was submitted to a cruel and unthinkable death at the hands of what is commonly referred to as a “street vet”.

This beautiful dog had been left by her owner in the care of somebody else while the owner was away. The “carer” decided that the heavily pregnant female needed medical assistance, and in this carer’s very flawed wisdom, they brought in a street vet who performed a C-section on the poor dog, allegedly without an anaesthetic.

I simply cannot imagine what that poor dog went through. I have had two C-sections awake, and I can tell you that even with all the epidurals and sweet talking you have to get your mind around having your tummy cut open. That poor animal, in distress, without her owner, at the hands of a butcher who jokingly is referred to as a street vet, must have been terrified as she experienced incredible burning pain. She, of course, bled out and now her wee puppies are dying one by one because they are unable to survive without their mother.

This is an outrage and simply cannot be tolerated as even slightly acceptable. Both the person who allowed the barbaric “surgery” to take place and the street vet need to be charged with the maximum penalty allowed by the law. Naturally, animal cruelty is the first charge, but what about practicing veterinary medicine without a degree, without a licence?

and undoubtedly is accompanied by a self righteous swagger of the imposter who butchers animals for a fee.

What is wrong with the foolish people who entrust the lives of their beloved animals to these charlatans? It costs less, I am sure, but it is the same misguided logic that entices people to fly on planes with under-qualified pilots with no charter licence to save a few dollars until disaster strikes and the whole country is up in arms.

It happened recently with a flight that went down, it has happened now with this street butcher. Everybody is talking about it, shocked to the core.

There will be, as there were with the plane, countless press releases and condemnations, but for how long, I ask you? How long will everybody be up in arms? These fake vets, charter pilots and other fake professionals who have infiltrated our society need to be exposed, charged to the fullest and sent to prison.

In this grand country of ours we are far too complacent. We allow people to get away with unspeakable acts. There is always a fuss and the unspeakable becomes the topic of conversation on social media for a while, until something else takes its place and then all is forgotten, and practically forgiven. A few months from now somebody will say, “Hey, do you remember that poor dog in Grand Bahama who died after an illegal Csection? What ever happened there?

Did they catch the guy?” Nobody will have the answer and that will be the end of it.

I sincerely hope that the owner of that poor animal files every charge in the book, he lost a dog that reportedly he loved and cared for, who also must have been worth a lot of money, as were her pups, who are not making it. I also hope that the Veterinarians of this country make a huge fuss, individually and through their association, these fake vets are stealing their livelihood. I am still waiting to hear an enraged statement from the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, it is my understanding that this would fall under their mantle.

If anybody knows of any person practicing medical services of any kind illegally and without training or a licence but not reporting it they make themselves accessories to the fact.

Speak up and make these criminals pay the price, not the animals killed by their inability and lack of knowledge.
