Nehemiah Hield makes “Waves” to help uplift believers By JEFFARAH GIBSON Tribune Features Writer jgibson@tribunemedia.net WITH so many people struggling with difficult circumstances and challenges in their lives at this time, Bahamian gospel artist Nehemiah Hield believes his new song can deliver a message of hope that will offer encouragement to all who hear it. “Waves” is the latest single from the artist who aims to uplift Christian believers and spur them on to triumph over adversities. “A lot has happened over the last couple years, in the Bahamas and around the world. We experienced a pandemic, and with it came the exposure of so many issues of life: divorce, (difficult) family relationships, abuse of all kinds skyrocketing and poverty. I now call them the waves of life,” he said. Nehemiah said he received a text from a woman named Latoya which he was able to turn into lyrics for a song. “After reading her text, I came up with an idea for the hook, with the words ‘like waves’. I later found out that Latoya had lost her husband recently. Like so many others who

lost loved ones or went through the struggles that the pandemic brought, this was a moment to heal and inspire,” he told Tribune Religion. After playing around with the words and the music for a bit, the song began to take shape. “I completed the hook idea, then moved on to a verse. I spoke to a musician colleague, Winston Thompson, and he put chords to my melody and after a few months of production we have the song ‘Waves’. The lyrics are written to build spirits and encourage those in doubt of God’s reality. Trusting God has its challenges, but He's real,” the singer said. Nehemiah hopes Christians here in the Bahamas and around the world can be inspired by his song, especially during such troubling times. “I would love for believers in Christ, especially here at home in the Bahamas, once they hear this song, that they get an instant increase in their faith in God; He is that kind of God,” he said. A video for the single is expected to premiere soon. Nehemiah has singing for more than 40 years. He was the original lead

NEHEMIAH HIELD

vocalist of the award-winning music group Baha Men and a member of several other Bahamian groups. He also performed with international recording artist Lenny Kravitz as a backing vocalist. However, he eventually crossed over to gospel music, becoming the managing director of Kingdom Glory Records, a subsidiary of the Mount Tabor Church under the leadership of Bishop Neil C Ellis. He has worked in the church’s music ministry in various positions, including as minister of music with responsibility for musicians’ affairs, as assistant director for praise and worship, a video editor for the church’s daily 60-second radio clips and also had responsibility for audio recordings. Nehemiah enjoys making music that promotes the Gospel and is a source of encouragement. “I come from a background where there was always a yearning to be better…The Bible says in John 10:10, ‘the thief come to kill, seek and destroy… but I have come that you might live life more abundantly.’ The inspiration comes from living that last line in this Bible verse. I want people to see Christ

in me, and that is my inspiration. God is truly real if we trust and truly believe. It is not easy, but it is possible. It is my hope that people that know me always see that difference in me. I pray the difference they see goes right to my belief in Christ,” he said. The singer said people can expect lots more from him in the near future. Nehemiah recorded and released his first solo gospel single, “One More Hallelujah” featuring local Bahamian artist Stevie S, in 2014. The song won the Marlin Award for the Best Junkanoo Gospel Recording of the Year. The song also won the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism Cacique Award for Gospel Song of the Year in 2015. Also in 2015, he received a Legends Award for his contributions to music and entertainment from the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism on behalf of the Bahamas government. In December 2016, the Noo School of Music and Performing Arts presented him with the Living Legend Award for his time in the music and entertainment industry in the Bahamas.

Pope decries divisions caused by old-school liturgy fans By FRANCES D'EMILIO Associated Press ROME (AP) — Pope Francis on Saturday blasted Catholics who, hewing to old-school versions of liturgy like the Latin Mass, have made an ideological battleground of the issue, decrying what he described as devilinspired divisiveness in the church. Francis pressed his papacy's battle against traditionalists, whose prominent members include some ultra-conservative cardinals. They have resisted restrictions, imposed last year by the Vatican, on celebrations of the old Mass in Latin in St. Peter's Basilica and, more generally, for years have disparaged the modernizing reforms of the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s. Speaking at the Vatican to instructors and students of the Pontifical Liturgical Institute, Francis said it's not possible to worship God while using the liturgy as a "battleground" for nonessential questions that divide the church. Francis has made clear he prefers Mass celebrated in local languages, with the priest facing the congregation instead of with his back to the pews. That was the way Mass was celebrated before the revolutionary Vatican Council reforms, more than a half century-ago, which aimed at making rank-and-file Catholics feel more connected to liturgical celebrations. "I underline again that liturgical life, and the study of it, must lead to greater ecclesial unity, not to division,'' the pope told the institute's participants.

"When liturgical life is a bit of a banner for division, there is the odor of the devil being inside there, the deceiver.'' "It's not possible to render worship to God and at the same time make a battleground of liturgy for questions that aren't essential,'' Francis added. Last year, two prominent cardinals questioned the legitimacy of a Vatican decree placing restrictions of the celebration of the old Latin Mass in St Peter's Basilica and forbidding private Masses in its side chapels. Such traditionalists have openly voiced hostility to Francis. The retired chief of the Vatican's doctrinal orthodoxy office, German Cardinal Gerhard Mueller, contended that no one was obliged to obey that decree. US

Cardinal Raymond Burke, who was given the heaveho by Francis early in his papacy from a Vatican post, called for the decree to be scrapped. Francis told his audience on Saturday that "every reform creates some resistance." He recalled that, when he was a youngster, Pope Pius XII allowed faithful to drink water before receiving Communion and that scandalized opponents. Similar indignation followed later reforms allowing Catholics to fulfill their weekly Mass obligation by attending an evening service instead of on Sunday mornings. Francis also blasted what he called "closed mentalities" that exploit the liturgy. "This is the drama we are living, in ecclesial groups which are moving

away from the Church, putting in question" the authority of bishops and of the church, he said. In 2016, a breakaway traditionalist Catholic group, the Society of St Pius X, accused Francis of sowing confusion and errors about the faith, joining a chorus of conservative criticism over what they perceived as the pontiff's lax doctrine. In 1969, the late Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre founded the society, opposed to the modernizing church reforms of the 1960s. In one of the more spectacular chapters of the Vatican's long-running duel with traditionalists, he and four other bishops were later excommunicated by the Vatican after the archbishop consecrated them without papal consent.

Mother Me Ministries host conference to comfort those in need By ALESHA CADET Tribune Features Reporter acadet@tribunemedia.net

nder the theme “Vessels of Honour: Surrendered, submitted and ready for service”, the Mother Me Ministries will host its eighth annual conference this weekend. The event will kickoff this Friday at the Commonwealth Baptist Church, Elizabeth Estates, at 7.30pm. The conference will continue on Saturday at 9am. The Mother Me Ministries is a faith-based organisation that was founded in 2015 by Minister Davonia Williams and her mother Elder Vernita Josey in an effort to help foster healthy relationships between mothers and daughters, and also to sensitize an older generation of women to the importance of “ being mothers to the younger generation.”

“This conference caters to all women from every sphere of life; mothers and daughters, women that are called to mentor the next generation, and also young women that need to be ‘mothered’ and taught how to fulfil their purpose in spite of pain and failure,” said Minister Davonia Williams. Hosted by both Minster Williams and her mother, the event will feature as speakers Dr Cleopatra Williams, Dr Anastacia Lewis, Pastor Kellen Russell, Sister Juanita Bullard, and Pastor Eileen Johnson. “This year it has been impressed upon us to also extend the same invitation for sons to be a part of this encounter, because many of them also need to be mothered and nurtured back to life, as many are broken and need to be reassured of who they are. I can assure you that you will be transformed forever, so come and bring your mom, sisters, brothers, sons, girlfriends,

CARDINAL: POPE’S WHEELCHAIR USE AN EXAMPLE TO OLDER ADULTS By NICOLE WINFIELD Associated Press VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis’ willingness to work despite knee pain that has made walking nearly impossible shows other older adults that they have wisdom and experience to offer younger generations, a top Vatican cardinal said Tuesday. Cardinal Kevin Farrell offered the assessment as he introduced Francis’ message for World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly. In the message released Tuesday, the 85-year-old pope urged

older people to consider advanced age a blessing. Francis is struggling to cope with strained ligaments in his right knee that have greatly limited his mobility. Last week, he was seen in public for the first time using a wheelchair. He recently said he can no longer walk and must rest his knee on doctors’ orders. Farrell, 74, the head of the Vatican’s office for laity and a trusted papal adviser, said that Francis’ willingness to acknowledge and display his limitations while continuing to hold audiences could encourage others to

continue contributing as they age. “We should not hide the fact that with age comes a lessening of our ability to play an active part in the life of the world today,” the Ireland-born American cardinal said. “He sends a message to all of us that we all have to carry on. We may have limitations in old age, but we carry on and we do our best.” In addition to heading the laity office, Farrell serves as the camerlengo, the papally appointed official who runs the Vatican when a pope dies or

retires until a conclave elects a new pontiff. Francis’ mobility problems have raised questions about his ability to manage upcoming trips. He is scheduled to go to Congo and South Sudan in early July and to Canada later that month. The Lebanese government confirmed this week that a planned papal visit next month had been postponed because of Francis’ health. Francis instituted the day honoring elderly people to drive home his belief that younger generations should value older ones as a resource

and not treat them as part of modern “throwaway culture.” In his message, the pope noted that advanced age is a time of life that isn’t understood even “by those of us who are already experiencing it.” “Even though it eventually comes with the passage of time, no one prepares us for old age, and at times it seems to take us by surprise,” he wrote. But Francis urged all his contemporaries to embrace their advanced ages as a gift and not to lament the diminishment

neighbours just bring everybody,” said Minister Williams. The Mother Me Ministries team hosts several activities and events throughout the year. In March, they put on the Mother Me Fun Run/ Walk. “One of the contributing factors for many that lost their lives to COVID19 was what we now know to be comorbidities. Mother Me Ministries, being a faith-based group, has felt the grief and pain that many of our sisters and brothers experienced due to the loss of their loved ones, and we realised that one of the things that our ministry could do moving forward was to create an avenue for us to be healthier versions of our selves. We stand along with the passage of scripture in 3 John 1:2 that states: ‘Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth’,” said Minister Williams. of their strengths or sense of usefulness. “Along with old age and white hairs, God continues to give us the gift of life and to keep us from being overcome by evil,” he said. “Aging is not a condemnation, but a blessing!” Francis closed out the message by noting that the war in Ukraine has brought another conflict to Europe as the generation that experienced World War II is dying out. He prayed that all elderly people are made into “artisans of the revolution of tenderness, so that together we can set the world free from the specter of loneliness and the demon of war.”

A farewell to Troy M Capron By Tanique Capron BORN to the proud parents of Theodore and Carolyn (née Roker) Capron on November 12, 1977, Troy M Capron he was the fourth child of the union and was brought up to love, revere and admonish the Lord. He spent his elementary years at Bahamas Academy Seventh Day Adventist School, transferring to Kingsway Academy for his secondary education. It was at these institutions Christian values were underscored. However, his foundational Christian values came from his mother who was also his Children’s Church teacher.

After graduating from Kingsway Academy High school in 1996, Troy enrolled at the College of The Bahamas and was also a work study student for the computer department. There, he attained a degree in Computer Data Processing. He obtained his Class A captain’s licence and was a licenced scuba diver, as well as an advocate for timely first aid and CPR certifications. He was considered a stellar employee wherever he was employed. Noteworthy of which were Burns House Bahamas in the Information and Technology Department. He also spent a brief time as part of the Quality

Home Centre management team. In 2002, Troy joined the Atlantis Resort and Casino as the technical systems manager. He was later promoted to assistant chief engineer. Finally, he was promoted to director of engineering, a post he held until his untimely death on April 26, 2022. Second only to his respect and love of God, was his love of family. He loved his wife Mary Lou and his two daughters, Kassiti and Talia, dearly. The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Troy; be it enjoying a quiet evening with family and friends, or thrill seeking riding his motorbike or deep sea diving.

TROY CAPRON

Regardless of the event, he saw nothing as impossible. He had a natural ability to find happiness in everything he did and this was contagious to everyone he met. Physically, Troy has moved on and has left a great legacy. His spirits lives on in all of us whom he positively impacted. He is survived by his wife Mary Lou, daughters Kassiti and Talia, and siblings Tanique Capron, Tamara Donaldson, Theodora Fernander, Travis Capron, Theodore Johnson, Regina Dickenson and Nina Clarke.

This is not a rehearsal HAD a pretty interesting conversation with my dad a few days ago. He said something that was simple in its utterance yet so profound in its depth: Life isn’t a rehearsal! The writer in me quickly woke to the idea of sharing this thought with my readers, “Hey, guys and gals! This isn’t a practice run. We get one chance to live this one life and we ought to make it count!” This is not some strange or new discovery. We get the idea of abundant life and abundant living all through the Word. Matthew 6 urges us to seek God’s Kingdom first; with the promise that all our needs will be met. 3 John 2:2 speaks volumes by sharing, “Brethren, I wish above all things that you prosper and be in good health, even as thy soul prospers.” Whether directly from the mouth of God or from a divine mouthpiece, we confirm the idea that our

lives should be lived fully, in abundance and with the liberty not only to be blessed, but also to be a blessing. Why then are so many believers walking, living and serving in defeat? It often seems we are living from life’s sidelines, observing rather than experiencing life’s benefits. The prosperity John discusses is about gaining happiness through a life – well-lived, as well as obtaining the resources to share that blessing with others. It begins with: Living beyond mere existence. To exist means simply to stay alive. To live means to enjoy the life you have been given. “Living” suggests contentment and peace with your existence Placing fear and concern in perspective. Our fears and concerns about life can be the impetus that pushes us to do better, but, if left unchecked, they can become the albatross

AYANNA CLARKE

that drowns us in a sea of worry and anxiety. We have been created as a dominant species. How can we rule, and replenish from a place of worry and fear? Allowing ourselves to be both right and wrong; and learning when to agree to disagree. No one can be 100 percent correct all the time. Give yourself permission to be wrong or to be in the wrong. Only the truly strong person

can own a mistake. In many cases, it is also fine to agree to disagree. It is great to be right, but who can be perpetually? I’ve learned: never trade the loss of true camaraderie for the award of winning alone. Understanding that poverty of spirit is worse than poverty of resource. When we expel the myth that poverty has only to do with finance, we can begin to see what other areas are poor in our lives. Perhaps we can be more fulfilled when we build the things that matter – family, true friendships, lasting love, and the like. Someone lacking in spirit has very little to share or pass on. Sadly, if they do, it is not to promote the greater good as much as it is to promote themselves. 5. Removing ideas that imprison and making room for those that empower. If there is one thing I have come to recognise, it’s the

imprisonment that most of us place ourselves in once we make up our mind to settle in fear, reside in anxiety or make our abode in anything that discourages or distracts. I would never advise ignoring trouble of any sort; but I have lived long enough to realize that when we make our beds in disquiet, we seldom move beyond that point. We become prisoner to our fears. How can we then be empowered by such situations? We can acknowledge their existence but with faith, forge ahead to solutions.

I’ve come a long way in terms living these beliefs myself, and have made the decision not only to live life on my terms but to live it with all the benefits that accompany being a child and a servant of the Most High God. There is prosperity in finding love, loving your work, living in abundance. There is prosperity in helping those who are in need; in freely lending a helping hand. Our goal: Finding that abundance together. God bless you this week!

ACM MEMBERS AT ST ANDREW’S IN EXUMA

FR DWIGHT ROLLE, rector of Christ the King New Providence.

Anglican Church Men issued a challenge: ‘Adam, where are you?” THE 48th Annual Diocesan Conference of the Anglican Church Men (ACM) of the Diocese of the Bahamas and Turks & Caicos Islands culminated in a Service of Thanksgiving on Sunday, May 1, which was held at the Parish of Christ the King, Ridgeland Park. During the sermon, Rector of Christ the King, Fr Dwight H L Rolle quoted his text from Genesis 3:9 where God is making His daily visit to the garden of Eden, but for some strange reason the man He had created was nowhere to be seen. God then asks the obvious question: “Adam, where are you?” Fr Rolle then reminded the men that even today, there is a call from God on their lives and a challenge for them to answer that call. With an unprecedented wave of criminal activity, the popular conversation may be centered on the gradual

disappearance of men in our society. But long before these individuals developed a tendency towards a life of crime, Fr Rolle said, perhaps there were several markers along the way which may have gone unnoticed and what we now have is the end product – the climax – of this destructive process. And this did not begin when they broke the law: there may have been a number of missed opportunities in the lives of those who are now predisposed to criminal behaviour. Perhaps, the home failed them and by extension the family; or maybe it was the school system or the church; their friends or even civic organisations, but the end result is that no one contributed to the production of a balanced, emotionally and psychologically healthy and resilient man. It was stressed that one out of every

five young men in our country will have at least one run-in with the Law and may even go to jail. Therefore, the mandate for the Anglican Church Men is to make every effort to reach out to these individuals out society. The other challenge that our young men are facing, the Fr Rolle said, is that they are lagging behind the young women in schools when it comes to obtaining an education and are far outnumbered in their pursuits to attend college and obtain a degree. This creates a problem in that the young men may be viewed as ineligible by their female counterparts, particularly professional women who refuse to get involved with or even marry a man that is not her equal academically and professionally. Bahamian society in general also contributes to the emotional and mental state of our

young men by referring to our men as being “no good”, drunkards, liars and cheaters. Fr Rolle stressed that both inside and outside of the church, ministry is not an option – it is imperative. The situation with Adam was that he had sinned and had fallen out of unity with his divine purpose. He was not where he was supposed to be and he had listened to others rather than obeying the commands that God had given him. But the reason why God called out to him was for him to come forth and to shoulder his responsibilities. The theme for the 48th Diocesan Conference was “Fearlessly Made” and the ACM used as their scriptural text Psalm 34:4. The event was held in a hybrid format with a number of people attending in person at the Parish Hall of Christ the King in Ridgeland Park while others

joined virtually from several parishes throughout New Providence and from Grand Bahama, Eleuthera, Long Island, Exuma, Inagua, along with other islands within the country as well as from the Turks and Caicos Islands. Presenters included Greg Been, who spoke specifically on the conference theme; Dennis Deveaux who addressed men’s financial health, and Dr Marcus Bethel, who advised the participants the men on their physical health. The blended format allowed for facilitators to make their presentations from different islands. The business session was chaired by the Council President, Gevon Moss. Following the presentations, the men performed their community project right on site at the church as they painted the exterior of the parish hall.
