his Sunday is Mother’s Day - a day set aside to celebrate moms, their achievements and sacrifices, and the bonds they share with their children.

To help you celebrate, Tribune Weekend takes a look at 10 of the best mothers of the small screen.

OK, so we admit, Peg may not be the epitome of supermom who cooks, cleans and meets her husband at the door cocktail in hand (she actually doesn’t do any of that), but somehow, she manages to still keep the family together and dote on her kids. And she made us laugh through it all.

8. Gilmore Girls’ Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham) Lorelai took a teenage pregnancy and made the best of it despite the challenges she faced. She did an excellent job raising her daughter Rory, as evidenced by the close bond they share, and she also worked to mend her own strained relationship with her parents.

1. The Golden Girls’s Sophie Patrillo (Estelle Getty) You can’t beat this Italian matriarch’s as she mothers not only her own daughter Dorothy, but also her roommates Blanche and Rose, with equal parts pasta sauce and sarcastic wit.

2. The Cosby Show’s Claire Huxtable (Phylicia Rashad) Claire Huxtable inspired a generation of women, showing them it was indeed possible to have a successful career and a family while also being a great Black role model to boot. Who can forget the strict but loving ways she handled the shenanigans of her kids?

3. Black-ish’s Rainbow Johnson (Tracy Ellis Rose) If Claire Huxtable was the Black mom of the ‘80s, then Rainbow is the 2.0 version for the 21st century. Another professional (she is a doctor), Rainbow raises her children to be independent while providing them with a safe space to call home in this crazy world.

9. The Simpsons’ Marge Simpson (voiced by Julie Kavner) We love this towering blue-haired matriarch of one our favourite animated shows. Marge deserves an award for keeping up with Bart, Maggie and Lisa, all the while keeping husband Homer in line as well.

10. Keeping up with the Kardashians’ Kris Jenner OK, so it’s not a TV sitcom, but the reality show does air on the small screen and has a huge following (and much of it is, undoubtedly, scripted).

Name another mom who has been so successful in branding all her of daughters (the jury is still out on son Rob) and helping them reach multimillion/billion-dollar status. Momager goals!

6. Good Times’ Florida Evans (Esther Rolle) Florida Evans is the epitome of the hard-working, low-income mom who does her best by her children, even if she can’t give them all the material things in life. We love her fiery, determined spirit, especially after the death of her husband.

Sharnette Thompson McKinney During Lupus Awareness Month, breast cancer survivor Sharnette tells Cara Hunt how she wants to help educate the people on the chronic autoimmune disease she and many other Bahamians suffer from.

S

harnette Thompson McKinney still manages to smile even with the difficult hand life has dealt her.

The 49-year-old Customs officer has had more than her share of medical challenges - first battling breast cancer and, more recently, dealing with the daily challenges that come with having lupus.

Lupus is an autoimmune disease that occurs when your body’s immune system attacks your own tissues and organs.

Inflammation caused by lupus can affect many different body systems — including your joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, brain, heart and lungs.

The month of May is observed as Lupus Awareness Month.

Sharnette hopes that by sharing her story she can help people learn more about the disease.

Her health challenges began in 2006 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer and had to undergo chemotherapy and a double mastectomy.

“Fortunately, I went into remission, but then a few years later I started just not feeling well and having health issues,” she told Tribune Weekend.

“I started having skin rashes and painful swelling. This was right around the time that I was having reconstructive breast surgery and my initial thought was that the cancer was coming back.”

After several doctors’ visits and bouts of illness, one of her doctors thought that her symptoms indicated lupus.

“I had never even heard of lupus. I didn’t know what it meant and so I initially thought that it sounded like a blood disorder. I went away to the United States to get a second opinion and that was when I got my official diagnosis,” she said.

Even with a confirmed name for what she was experiencing, Sharnette admits that she did not take the diagnosis as seriously as she should have.

“I think initially I was in self-denial,” she said.

“And I was living a fairly normal life when I was not having flare-ups. I didn’t know until I got my diagnosis and started doing more research that the periods of feeling bad, I had actually were lupus flare-ups.”

A lupus “flare” or “flare-up” is when your lupus symptoms worsen and you feel ill as a result. The formal definition of a flare is: “A measurable increase in disease activity in one or more organ systems involving new or worse clinical signs and symptoms and/or lab measurement.”

Sharnette explained that lupus affects each person differently.

In her case, flare-ups affect her skin.

“I would get really bad skin rashes and lesions which would break out and turn into open sores and ulcers. I would also have swollen joints the pain was unbearable.”

Sharnette was forced to take her diagnosis a lot more seriously when a particularly bad flare-up landed her in the hospital and she started losing her hair.

“That was when I was like, you need to get a grip and take this thing seriously, because one day you can be totally fine and the next day you can be in a crisis with a major organ shut down,” she said.

Part of taking her condition seriously was to figure out what things were triggering her flare-ups.

“I started figuring out what my diet needed to be, and for me, I realised that being in the sun is a major trigger, so I know that I have to stay out of direct sunlight as much as possible and wear sun

Sharnette said through it all she has relied on the support of family and friends, particularly her mother.

“My mother has been there for me since the cancer. I do not know where I would be without her,” she said.

Another huge help has been the lupus support group she joined.

Lupus 242 Bahamas is a non-profit group that provides support and information for people in the Bahamas living with lupus. The group started in 2012 and its goals include increasing awareness locally and supporting global research efforts to find a cure for lupus.

“Lupus 242 has just been a great support for me...just having people who you can share your experience with. Lupus affects everyone differently, but it still helps to hear what other people do when they have flares and just have people there who know that you are struggling and what that is like,” she said.

Sharnette said prayer has also helped her during her darkest days.

“Prayer has always been a huge factor in my life, and you get in a space sometimes when it

seems that everything is crushing in on you. I do get depressed and sometimes I do ask God why all these bad things had to happen to me.

But I go and mediate and pray and just try to get back to a positive space.”

She said she wants people to appreciate just how difficult living with lupus can be.

“I may not look sick sometimes, especially if I am not having a flare-up, but that doesn’t mean that I am not suffering. Recently, I had to go back on chemo and take morphine for my pain management. I would say that in the last two and a half years I have flare-ups every two to three months and they just come up without warning. My skin will just start to itch, and I’ll know that something is coming. Sometimes my skin feels so bad I want to rub it off and it can get really frustrating and I want to cry,” she said.

From an advocacy standpoint, Sharnette said it is essential that there is access to affordable medical care for people who have lupus, as the cost of treatments can be prohibitive.

“My doctors’ visits and medication costs are through the roof,” she said.

he effort to make more Bahamians aware of lupus continues as local organisations are galvanising to ensure people have as much information as possible about the autoimmune disease.

Leading the charge is Lupus 242, which will be doing all they can to shed light on the condition during Lupus Awareness Month.

Lupus is an incurable disease, but there are treatments which can make living with it more manageable and improve the prognosis of the patient significantly. It cannot be transmitted from person to person, but it does seem to appear more frequently in people who have a family history of the condition.

Lupus is often mistaken for other afflictions, which means it can go undetected for years without even the person affected knowing. Amongst other symptoms, sufferers may exhibit a fever, tiredness, an increase in mouth ulcers and may even develop arthritis.

A common symptom of a lupus sufferer can often be seen on the skin of the face; a bright red rash which runs from the bridge of the nose, under the eyes and across the cheeks. It is known as the “butterfly rash”. This butterfly rash is one of the most commonly associated symptoms of the disease. In fact, it is likely to be where the disease got its name from: part of its scientific name, lupus erythematosus, with ‘erythroid’ being derived from the ancient Greek word for ‘red’.

Lupus 242 will host a series of activities for the month of May, including a virtual pop-up, a run and health panels discussing topics from lupus and COVID-19 to mentally coping with a chronic illness. The group is also encouraging the country to ‘POP’ (Put On Purple attire) for every Friday in May. On May 10, World Lupus Day, Lupus 242 will release a new public service announcement with project sponsor the Movi Group.

In recognition of Lupus Awareness Month, the Insurance Commission of the Bahamas recently made a donation to Lupus 242.

The gift is earmarked to benefit members of the support group with the purchase of medication and pharmaceutical supplies. Jamell Bodie, manager of supervision at the Insurance Commission and a lupus fighter, was the catalyst behind the push to assist fellow members.

Shonalee Johnson, vice president of Lupus 242 group, thanked Ms Bodie and the Insurance Commission for their generosity, particularly during a time when many members are facing financial hardships due to the global pandemic. OR meat lovers who are looking for some new flavours to delight their palates, the Graycliff Hotel & Restaurant is introducing several new menu options that may be of interest.

Graycliff, through a promotion and collaboration with the US Meat Export Federation, is incorporating a variety of new cuts of meat, and some not so new (but presented in a new way) in their menu.

The promotion will run for May and June. And if the items are well received, they may just get a permanent spot on the Graycliff menu.

During a special tasting held yesterday, Chef Elijah Bowe shared some of his creations using the various new cuts of meats, including coulette, pork, tri tip, rack of lamb and lamb shank ribs.

“They are good quality meats that are very affordable. So, when we offer them on the menu, people could say its half the price of the rack of

lamb, which we believe will be a hit with diners, especially at this time when people are conscious about how much they spend,” he said said.

“Although we are a fine dining restaurant, we try to ensure there are some things on the menu that are affordable.”

Chef Bowe has been working at the Graycliff restaurant for 19 years and has, over the course of time, revamped, changed and rearranged the menu.

He said the restaurant is pleased to receive these new cuts of meat from the US Meat Export Federation as they help Graycliff keep up with the latest dining trends.

“They keep us supplied with the finest cuts in meats - lamb, beef, pork - and abreast of what is trending. And even in terms of recommendation in terms of trying meats. All of this keeps everything fresh here and current instead of boring and monotonous. And it helps to motivate my staff

because we can always create and do something new with the meats. We have opportunities to be highly creative,” he said.

One thing that is trending in the world of dining right now, said Chef Bowe, are thick cuts of meat.

“What I have been noticing, and even in the media, people are gravitating towards big cuts.

The dietary requirements are six to eight ounces of meat, but we are talking about meats that are about 24 ounces that people are ordering,” he said.

“Now, I do not know why this is a trend, but people enjoy ordering these kinds of meat.”

As Graycliff slowly gets back to normal, he said, so will their steakhouse.

“That is something to look forward to. We have not officially opened as yet, but that is something that is in the works. We are looking to offer the best food for the best prices,” said Chef Bowe.

“Seeing it all come this far to now being a shop owner gives me a humbling yet invigorating feeling. To

have started as a student creating her means to pursue further education, to rising to an expert level in the handmade Bahamian fashion business is nothing short of amazing,” Allia told Tribune Weekend.

The new boutique, she said, shares a “cute and cosy” space with Buttons Bridal and Formalwear in the Cable Beach Shopping Centre.

The space, she explained, was designed by her own interior design company, eVoKE Interiors.

She wanted the boutique to be bright and inviting, and also give customers a clear picture of what the brand is all about - class and quality.

“The aim was to mix a true Bahamian and modern style..and we did that by designing and producing custom finishing such as a custom

jewellery stand, display shelves trimmed with local straw plaits and an amazing colourful palm print fabric wall feature that draw the eyes of those passing by. We decided to incorporate the modern feel by making use of a sleek lined checkout table, printed and upholstered by myself, and using rose gold signage and branding text to bring a touch of elegance to the inviting island theme.

It was in the interior design where I was most grateful for my architectural background. The shop takes on a form follows function approach throughout, making the small and cosy space versatile...we can host our jewellery classes and events comfortably while social distancing,” she said.

Having her own store space, said Allia, was not initially on her agenda for this year. In fact, she was not even scouting for locations; it all

happened by chance. Allia describes it as “divinely coordinated.”

“I was supporting a fellow girl boss with her recently launched import and export business and had phoned her for directions to pick up my package. Not being able to reach her, I drove and noticed so many store vacancies. I knew a friend that was looking for a store space, so when I caught up to the owner, I asked her what the price point was for a retail space in the area; still inquiring for my friend. I got there and fell in love with the space. Knowing it was too small for my friend, I immediately went to the drawing board to figure out how I could make this happen,” she said.

“I had received the date ‘April 21’ and business name ‘Lia Michelle’ in 2018 while in deep prayer and meditation on sick leave with conch poisoning, and the Lord Jesus Christ never fails.”

The boutique will also serve as a venue where Allia will host jewellery making classes in the near future.

“Besides its unique interior design, the store is unique in that it is the first all-Bahamian boutique store of its kind where there is a plethora of customisable item categories,” she said.

With the Downtown Straw Market still closed due to COVID-19, Allia said her boutique is currently one of the few places in New Providence where tourists can purchase authentically made Bahamian souvenirs.

She wants to encourage taxi drivers to bring visitors to her store to shop for local products.

“Now that I have all of my talents organised in one spot, I can focus on producing the Lia Michelle signature sundresses and accessories line along with Lia Michelle men’s necktie, pocket square and lapel line launching this Father’s Day. In the months to come, I am hoping to start a fund that will afford us a Bahamian factory where we can empower young Bahamians by teaching our various handmade trades to create jobs and expand the company to competitively meet much anticipated demands of the future,” said Allia.

Harlem-based Bahamian artist reflects on “home” in new paintings

AINTING a picture of the place he loves most, which is home, “without airbrushing the blemishes” was what New York-based Bahamian artist Drew Weech sought to do with the artwork in his current virtual exhibition at Nassau’s new TERN Gallery.

Titled “Ad Paintings”, his solo exhibition will remain on display until June 30.

The works are the first in a series of paintings which will make historical references to Drew’s memories of the Bahamas.

For this collection, the artist found inspiration in the motif of repetition often seen in advertising and popular culture. Through these paintings, a critique of the idea of “home” emerges by Drew’s use of elements that have deep yet often-forgotten histories in the Caribbean.

Using mainly oil sticks and flash paint, the artist intentionally evokes feelings of wheat-pasted street posters, referring to the repetition and

overlap of cultural histories and practices that remain over many generations.

“The paintings came about shortly after I moved to New York (Harlem) from Nassau. I started thinking about home more. I was not homesick, but I thought about the things I enjoy about home as well as those that I do not. I wanted to, in my own way, paint a portrait of the place I love without airbrushing the blemishes,” he told Tribune Weekend.

And that is exactly what he did for this, his third solo show, which features themes of home, family and history.

With the global pandemic dragging on, opportunities for people to come face-to-face with artwork remain rare. Still, Drew said his work can be appreciated in all formats.

“When I began, I did not have a virtual show in mind. I started sharing them on Instagram early on, so I suppose that counts for a virtual space.

However, that had no effect on how I created them,” he said.

And even though he would love to have people engage with his work and up close and personal, virtual will have to do for now. And the upside is that an artist can have a wider audience for their work.

“It’s different. It’s a great option to have as the work is seen by a great number of people who can’t make it into the gallery. TERN Gallery did a great job at presenting the paintings in a virtual space,” he said.

Drew is a painter who on the rare occasion also creates sculptures. He was born and raised in both Nassau and Exuma.

He graduated from NSCAD University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada with a BDes in Interdisciplinary Design in 2011.

In his work, he explores various historical and contemporary archetypes such as the nude and the vanitas to vivify his own conflicted feelings about the notion of home.

“I often drew and painted as a child, and I was surrounded by Bahamian art at home. Through my father I learned about the Renaissance and that led to me being interested in different periods of art history,” he said.

Drew’s previous two solo exhibitions were “A Self-Portrait” (2018) at the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas and “Then Again ...” (2019) at The Island House.

This month, the artist will host a talk via the TERN Gallery.

“I’ve also started working on the paintings for my first in-person show with the gallery next year,” he said.

A barrier-breaking prima donna Part I Sir Christopher Ondaatje writes about the extraordinary rise to fame of the first African American to become a leading performer at the Metropolitan Opera.

Leontyne Price Leontyne Price was born in Laurel, Mississippi on February 10 , 1927. Her father worked in a lumber mill and her mother was a midwife and in the church choir. She began piano lessons with the local teacher, Mrs H V McInnis, when she was five. Her parents exchanged the family phonograph for an upright piano when she was in kindergarten, and she was taken to see and hear famed African American contralto Marian Anderson sing when she gave a concert in Jackson, Missouri. The experience was immediately inspirational.

When she was in her teens she sang in the choir at St Paul’s Methodist Church and played piano for the chorus at Oak Park Vocational High School. She also earned a little money singing for funerals and civic functions.

While still a child, she became friendly with the daughters of Alexander and Elizabeth Chisholm, a wealthy white family who encouraged her singing and piano playing. She worked part-time in her teens as a maid and babysitter for the Chisholms.

Hoping for a job teaching music, the young Leontyne Price enrolled at the all-black Wilberforce College in Wilberforce, Ohio. She joined the Delta Sigma Theta sorority, which helped organise some of her early recitals. In 1947, she won third place in an inter-state vocal competition that led to a performance in the National Negro Musical Festival in Chicago.

She remained with the School of Music when it separated from Wilberforce University and became Central State University, headed by Charles Wesley, who urged Leontyne to seriously consider advanced studies in voice. When she graduated in 1948, she sang a benefit concert at which the famous bass Paul Robeson (“Showboat”) sang. She won a scholarship to the Juilliard School that year and her former employers the Chisholm family helped with the school expenses when she was admitted to the studio of Florence Page Kimball – her principal voice teacher.

In 1949, in her first standing-room introduction to the Metropolitan Opera, she heard Lĵuba Welitsch sing Salome. The next year she joined the Juilliard Opera Workshop and sang small roles in Mozart’s Magic Flute and Puccini’s Schicchi. In the summer of 1951, she sang Ariadne in Strauss’ second cast of Ariadne auf Naxos.

In early 1952, she sang Mistress Ford in a Juilliard production of Verdi’s Falstaff and, hearing her performance, she was cast by Virgil Thomson in his all-Black opera Four Saints in Three Acts which performed on Broadway for two weeks, and then travelled to Paris. Meanwhile, she was signed to sing Bess in George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess directed by Robert Breen.

She sang her opening performance of Porgy and Bess at the State Fair of Texas on June 9, 1952, and received glowing reviews. The popular production went on to perform in Pittsburgh, Chicago, and Washington, DC, before touring Vienna, Berlin, London and Paris.

On the eve of the European tour, Leontyne Price married William Warfield, the popular bass-baritone singer who co-starred with her as Porgy. She was married in the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem.

- Leontyne Price After Porgy and Bess returned to the United States in 1953, William Warfield had trouble adjusting his many theatrical commitments to the single demands of the Gershwin show. He was dropped from the cast while Price continued in the show for another year – both on Broadway and a second American tour. This put a strain on their relationship and the couple were legally separated in 1967 and divorced in 1973. Both Price and Warfield were ambitious to have opera careers, but racial barriers did not make it easy for Black singers. Price and Warfield did, however, sing duo concerts, and began a concert tour together for Columbia Artists.

The Metropolitan Opera’s General manager, Rudolf Bing, had announced publicly that he would hire Black singers for the right part, but it was not until Price was invited to sing “Summertime” from Porgy and Bess on April 6, 1953, at a fundraiser that Price got her chance to sing for

the Met. However, the distinction of the first Black woman to sing as a member of the Metropolitan Opera Company went to Marian Anderson, who sang Ulrica in Verdi’s Un ballo in Maschera on January 7, 1955. Price made her formal recital debut in November 1954 at New York’s Town Hall.

“The way I was taught, being Black was a plus, always. Being a human being, being in America, and being Black, all three were the greatest things that could happen to you. The combination was unbeatable.”

- Leontyne Price The doors to the magic world of opera opened for Leontyne Price through television and NBC Opera Theatre under music director Peter Herman Adler. In January 1955, she sang the title role in Puccini’s Tosca – which was the very first appearance by an African American in a leading role in televised opera. She went on to star in three other NBC Opera broadcasts: Pamina in The Magic Flute (1956); Madame Lidoine in Poulenc’s Dialogues of the Carmelites (1957); and Donna Anna in Don Giovanni (1960). Her Tosca performance with David Poleri, the Cavaradossi, was the first TV broadcast with a mixed-race couple, and her later NBC broadcasts were boycotted by NBC affiliates in the South – because of her race.

In March 1955, she auditioned at Carnegie Hall for the Austrian conductor Herbert von Karaĵan who was touring with the Berlin Philharmonic.

He was so impressed with her singing “Pace, pace, mio Dio” from Verdi’s La forza del destino that he offered to manage and direct her European operatic career – which would never be practically possible. But it was an exceptional endorsement.

Price began touring the US and Canada after a successful Town Hall debut in November 1954.

They were all recitals on the Columbia Artists roster. She was accompanied first by John La Montaine, but then changed to David Garvey who remained her accompanist until he died. She toured India and Australia, giving concerts and recitals for the US State Department. On May 3, 1957 she sang Aida in a concert performance with the Philadelphia Orchestra in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It was her first public performance of that would become her signature role.

“We should not have a tin cup out for something as important as the arts in this country, the richest in the world. Creative artists are always begging, but always being used when it’s time to show us at our best.”

- Leontyne Price It was in San Francisco on September 20, 1957, as Madame Lidoine in the US premiere of Poulenc’s Dialogues of the Carmelites that Price made her grand opera debut – a last-minute substitute for the Italian soprano Antonietta Stella who had just had an appendicitis operation. She made her own scheduled European opera debut as Aida at the Vienna Staatsoperwith von Karaĵan

PRICE with famed conductor Herbert von Karaĵan conducting. She made another appearance, again replacing Anita Cerquetti, at the Royal Opera House in London, and at the Arena di Verona – both as Aida.

In the autumn of 1959, she sang with great Swedish tenor Jussi Rjörling in Verdi’s Il Trovatore in San Francisco; and then Aida and her first onstage Pamina in Vienna, and repeated Aida at London’s Covent Garden.

The British Broadcasting Corporation organised a recital of American songs for Price with Gerald Moore as well as a concert of operatic scenes from Richard Strauss for BBC Radio. She followed this with a full opera recording for RCA singing Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni under Erich Leinsdorf.

She was busy and made her debut at the Salzburg Festival in Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis conducted by von Karaĵan; and recorded Verdi’s Il Trovatore for RCA Records in Rome, then returned to Verona to sing Il Trovatore with tenor Franco Corelli. But still no invitation from the Metropolitan Opera, although Rudolph Bing went backstage in Salzburg to invite them to make their debut at the Met but giving no definite date. This was not totally Bing’s fault. He had invited Price to sing two Aidas in 1958, but, on the advice of Peter Herman Adler and others, she was warned not to make her debut in the racially stereotypical role of Aida – an Ethiopian slave. She was advised to enlarge her repertoire. William Warfield quotes

Peter Adler in his autobiography, My Music & My Life: “Leontyne is going to be a great artist. When she makes her debut at the Met, she must do it as a lady, not a slave.”

Instead, Price performed Liu in Turandot at the Chicago Lyric Opera with Birgit Nilsson and sang Massenet’s Thais. Then she sang Aida at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan and received the tumultuous reception she deserved. One critic from Milan wrote: “Even our great Verdi would have found her the ideal Aida.”

She was the first African American to sing the prima donna role in Italy’s great opera house. She sang Donna Anna in Don Giovanni in Salzburg that summer, and the Cio-Cio-San in Madame Butterfly for the first time in Vienna with von Karaĵan conducting.

135 Years ago this week

rom the Nassau Guardian, Bahama Islands Advocate and Intelligencer, Saturday, May 8, 1886: “The ceremony of laying the Corner Stone of the new Chancel of St Matthew’s took place on Thursday afternoon, in the presence of a large number of persons. At 5 o’clock, there was a short service held inside the Church, the Rev F Swann (Rector of Christ Church) reading the prayers, the Rev D’Y Brace (Assistant Curate Christ Church) the First Lesson, and the Rev W H Strombom (Rector of St John’s) the Second Lesson.

After this, an Offertory was taken up and hymn 215, ‘The Church’s one foundation’ was sung. While the choir was singing heartily, and the organ pealing forth the tune of this grand old hymn, the Right Rev the Bishop and the Rev R Saunders, Rector of St Matthew’s, together with the before-mentioned clergymen, marched in procession through the northern door of the Church to the north-east corner of the edifice, where everything was in readiness for the performance of the ceremony.

The Bishop then read a few short prayers, which were followed by the singing of Hymn 394, after which the Rev R Saunders deposited, in the cavity of the stone a bottle, containing amongst other mementos, the following inscription, in parchment, written in English and Latin:

More summer precautions

By KIM ARANHA | Animal Matters I don’t know if I am the only one, but the weeks are rushing by like never before, It is always Friday and time to do the weekend shopping.

In spite of the fact that the Bahamas is pretty open now, the days have taken on an unusual uniformity, one bleeding into the other with nothing to identify them for the previous days except the length of the line at the ATM. Our second vaccines are looming in the foreseeable future, followed by 14 days of limbo between protected and “no yet”, after that we are free to travel with out having swabs taken every five minutes and filling in countless forms and answering strangely worded questionnaires (are they worded that way to trick us).

However, life’s simple pleasures remain the same, and the pleasure we take in them is perhaps more intense that ever when we are able to see them hidden behind all the uniformity of the daily duties we trudge through.

The summer weather is back, and as I said last week, there are many precautions we need to take for our animals. I talked about taking your pet to the beach or on the boat, and how you must be mindful of their needs.

It is reasonable to assume that the pet accompanying you to the beach is a dog, as not many people take their cat or parrot or any other home pet to the beach.

It is imperative to explore the conditions at home for your animals. We are blessed in this little island nation of ours that we very rarely have to be concerned about excessive cold, however, we do have great heat, high humidity, fierce downpours and of course (dare I mention them) hurricanes. Now, in early May, is a good time to review that all precautions are in place. It still feels as if Christmas was a couple of weeks ago, but hurricane season starts on June 1 and May is infamous for it’s showers.

So lets start with the obvious: You need adequate shelter if your animal spends time outside; somewhere with good ventilation and a through breeze. If it doesn’t have good (with

emphasis on good) ventilation then it will become an oven and your animal would prefer to get wet than baked.

With this in mind, a waterproof shelter is needed for the rain and a tree is nice just to escape the hot rays of the summer sun.

Many people now are keeping chickens in their yards. I’m not sure if it is for a certain supply of eggs during a pandemic, or that it assures a supply of superior eggs, or if it is just for fun. Whatever the reason, these birds need to be considered in the summer months as well. All farm animals, of course, require the same considerations.

In addition to the proper shelter, all animals, big and small, need copious amounts of fresh, cool water.

Bowls, troughs, buckets must be in shaded spots, otherwise the sun will do its job in minutes. In the summer months we all drink more water, or we certainly should; dehydration has some very scary-side effects. I have been told that if you feel thirsty, it is too late, you should have had a drink before feeling thirsty.

The final consideration here is what will you do in the event of a hurricane hitting our shores. Will you bring your pet inside with you, which

in my humble opinion, is the only thing to do. If you don’t want chickens in the living room, set up your indoor coop in the garage of laundry room. All creatures are entitled to indoor shelter protection in the event of a hurricane.

Farm animals need to be put on high ground if possible, do not corral them, they must be able to escape flood. They know how to get away from rising water, but if they are penned in they are unable to. Spray a colourful dot (or symbol) on their rump so you will recognise them after the storm.

The Bahamas is in desperate need of a pet friendly shelter. Many other nations which have become animal

learn to like cats and not follow them I’d love to find out more about this place called the beach.

A lover, not a fighter

By THE BAHAMAS HUMANE SOCIETY “Hello, Nassau! My name is Boxer, but I’m a lover not a fighter.

I’m about five months old and I’m not letting a gimpy paw slow me down. The vets say there’s nerve damage, so we’re not quite sure how it will go as I grow up, but I know I’ll never lose my bubbly personality. I’m hoping to find a home with maybe some children, perhaps another dog, I could even

sensitive have now got shelters that welcome pets. People have died staying home because they would not leave their animals alone at home.

How many more people have to die before we realise that there are owners who are not prepared to just walk away from their fur family?

As a footnote to my comments above I must add that my dogs consider a sofa in an air-conditioned room adequate shelter; a sofa for each dog in an air-conditioned room qualifies as superior shelter.

Of course, there large bowls of cool water dotted around the room and quiet music to drown out any thunder.

Bring it inside

H

aving plants inside a home or office, a church, or a business, does many things.

Indoor plants elevate people’s moods, they add aesthetic benefits and atmosphere, they have a calming effect, they produce oxygen, and they can filter toxins from the air.

Indoor plants generally benefit any interior space and the people that use that indoor space.

Indoor plants provide a connection between us and the natural world to which we belong.

Choosing the right plant can be difficult, as many factors are involved in a plant being happy or miserable in any given space (light, water availability, ambient humidity, for example).

There are certain plants that have for a long time been available as interior plants, for the simple reason that they do well indoors! Take for example the Dracaena, Dieffenbachia, Spathiphyllum, Sansevieria (now reclassified as Dracaena), or Chamaedorea. These have all been used for ages, because they are easy to cultivate indoors.

Simply put though, just about any plant that you can name, can be used indoors (our neighbours to the far north use hibiscus, banana, bougainvillea… you name it, they use it as an interior plant). What makes a plant successful indoors is a different story.

Some plants need high light situations (certainly bougainvillea, hibiscus will need a southern facing window to receive as much natural light as possible throughout the day), some plants prefer lower light situations. Usually, the conditions that a given plant will perform best under, can be initially judged by researching the origins of a plant, i.e. understory, rainforest, riverside, or plains. Naturally a plant that originates in the rainforest will not thrive under dry conditions without high amounts of supplemental watering and humidity.

Some plants are extremely tolerant of very low light and dry situations. Sansevieria, Zamioculcus zamiifolia (ZZ plant) or Chamaedorea elegans are excellent examples of plants that are highly tolerant of low light, low humidity, dry situations. Spider plants or Spathiphyllums do very well in bathroom settings where there is minimal to zero natural light and higher humidity levels than the rest of the house.

Any plant indoors will thank you if taken outside when the rain is falling (I hope y’all are out there doing your rain dances). Cleaning

leaves of indoor plants can help them thrive rather than just survive. Dust that can accumulate on the leaves can inhibit light absorption and gas exchanges.

A monthly cleaning (either out in the rain, a wet cloth, or a leaf shine) will certainly benefit any plant that is indoors.

Acclimatisation is the process that occurs when a plant is taken from its growing environment to a location where it will be given time to become used to lower light situations. Light is the number one growth factor, fuelled by water and nutrient availability. As mentioned, some plants can thrive in extreme low light situations, especially if those plants have been given time to acclimatize to low light situations in a shade house with heavy shade. At our nursery, part of our shade house and our back growing shade house are shaded with 73 percent shade to allow plants to acclimatise to lower light situations that they may be exposed to once taken into a home to be used as interior plants. Plants generally slow down their growth rate when placed indoors, and in turn they will use less water and less nutrients. It is important to not overwater plants that are indoors, overwatering is the number one killer of interior plants. Pests can sometimes create drastic issues indoors as there is a lack of predatory beneficial

insects to help keep pests under control. A monthly spraying of a nontoxic horticultural oil or similar (neem, pyrethrin etcetera) will help in prevention of indoor plant pests. I would venture to say that light is the primary thing to consider when choosing a plant for indoors.

Once a plant is chosen considering the light availability, then consider watering patterns.

It may take a while to get it right, but once the desired balance is found, plants can last for generations, I’m talking decades of time, indoors.

My daughter’s grandmother in Canada has a hoya that she claims was taken as a cutting from someone, over 40 years ago, and it has been on a kitchen shelf ever since! Don’t be afraid to experiment with plants indoors. Any plant can work indoors, if it is given what it needs regarding light, water, nutrients, and pest control. So, grow on, get some more indoor plants and improve the indoor spaces with a little bit of the outdoors. As always, I wish you happy gardening!
