extremely ill and died. It was such a privilege to have him and Valentino Stubbs lend their amazing vocals to this track,” said Pastor Q. “I called Japheth’s wife to get her blessing to release this track as it was recorded four years ago, and when she gave it to me, I knew it had to be the first single. So, it is a tribute to Lyrically Blessed as well,” he said. Pastor Q said the song is meant to awaken a desire and hunger for fellowship with God in listeners. “I wrote the song to capture my heart’s cry to continuously be passionately in love with Jesus...or on fire for Him as most would say... despite how one may feel or what is happening around them. It is a love song to God from someone who knows they are nothing without Him,” he said. Pastor Q said he is working on more songs like “Draw Me To The Fire” that will be featured on the album. “This album will be a mix of many different styles of music and really show my love of different types of music. But it is simply a collection of simple, spontaneous songs I sang to the Lord throughout my years with journeying with Him, through the victories, the failures, the tears, the laughter and the lessons,” he said. He added that each song captures a biblical truth, so it also is a tool to challenge believers. Pastor Q’s new single is available on Spotify, iTunes and Google Play.

EARS ago, I went to visit a friend who was pregnant and two weeks overdue. I found my gaze returning to her fully rounded abdomen which held the precious life of a human being. I was confronted once again by the mystery of birth. No matter how many times it happens, there is still a sense of the majesty, power, and creativity of God who created the whole birth process. It is much too wonderful for us to ever fully understand. Since then, I too have given birth to a baby, and am a grandmother expecting my second grandchild in June. The miracle of cells dividing to produce a fully formed person never ceases to amaze me. To feel the movement as the months pass by is an indescribable feeling. What was once a quiet secret closely held within the family, begins to show itself gradually for the whole world to see. Several months ago, during Advent, we thought about the birth of a very special child—the Baby Jesus—who was God come down to earth in human form in order that we might follow his example. He was born of a human mother, born of flesh, as we say, so that we could learn how to be born of the Spirit. We ought to be born again of water and the Spirit, and this is accomplished by confessing our sins, asking for forgiveness and asking Jesus to enter our hearts. It is all a great mystery how it happens. Let us think about Mary and her cousin, Elizabeth, as examples of two women used by God as mothers to fulfil God’s eternal plan. “At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: ‘Blessed are you

among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favoured, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!’” (Luke 1:39-45). Elizabeth was the mother of John the Baptist who came to teach the people that God would forgive their sins if they repented and were baptised. The mystery surrounding his birth begins with the fact that both of his parents were so old that his father, Zechariah, did not believe the angel when the news was given to him. He had been praying for a long time for a son, and as a priest in the temple, he would have made sacrifices to God and done all the things that a good Jew was supposed to do. Yet when God did answer his prayer, he was too overwhelmed to believe it. Because of his unbelief, he was unable to speak until the baby was circumcised and was to be given the name John. This child grew up IN LIFE we will inevitably experience peaks and valleys. Our ability to endure often has a direct correlation with our spiritual walk and a belief that a brighter day lies ahead. The absence of real hope is an anathema and compounds the situation. For believers, being hopeful about an amelioration in our circumstances emanates from our faith and spiritual walk with Christ. We simply know that life for us will eventually improve. Romans 15:13 (KJV) tells us that” “Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.” The hope that we have would not exist, or it would peter out if not for our faith. The writer of Hebrews wrote in Hebrews 11:1(KJV): “Now faith is the substace of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” We remain hopeful because of our faith. Faith is at the heart of our
Christian beliefs and the good news. Our Creator is a God of love and our spiritual walk has taught us to stay the course despite the uncertainties that abound. We are hopeful because we have a prolific relationship with God and we trust Him. The valley experience must eventually end but believers sometime view the season with a degree of ambivalence. It is during these moments that one tends to experience spiritual growth; a new vision is about to be revealed by God and this might not have occurred otherwise. This is preparation time. “And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity (love).” See 1 Corinthians 13:13 (KJV). The life of the believer is one of hope. We live in the hope of meeting Christ face-to-face one day. It is this same hope that enables us to navigate and overcome the vicissitudes of life. The Apostle Paul
THE TRIBUNE to be God’s special prophet who came to prepare the way for his cousin, Jesus. What a wonderful God we have who uses us just as we are, and yet who works so unpredictably. As we think of the miracle of all human births, let us also remember the mystery of God being born as a human being, as Jesus Christ, whom we worship as Lord and Saviour. The gift of new life happens every day in our hospitals, and can happen anywhere, as we open our hearts to God’s Holy Spirit. The mystery of birth can be yours to experience as you receive the new life that Jesus came to bring for you. The same Holy Spirit who came upon Elizabeth and Zechariah, Mary and John, will come upon you and me if we ask God in prayer. Ask and you will receive. God uses all of us in different ways, and over the years, many women have been used by God. In the bible, we read that they were judges, prophets, teachers, leaders, martyrs, wives and mothers. Today, women hold just about every position possible and we applaud those around the world who fight for women’s and children’s rights as human rights. Let us pray for equality and justice to be defended in every country, and where changes need to be made, it will happen in our lifetime. Domestic violence, incest and every immoral act committed against our children and women are crimes against their humanity. Let us also hold motherhood as sacred and prayerfully nurture our planned families. Psalm 119:114 (KJV) tells us: “Thou art my hiding place and my shield: I hope in thy word.” Hebrews 10:23 (KJV) reminds us, “let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering (for he is faithful that promised).” It is important that we are hopeful when we are faced with adversity and challenges. It is only for a season and our relationship with God will see us through. Our amazing God uses adversity to get our attention and draw us closer to Him, to bring about self- examination, and to cause us to change our behaviour. Amen. THE TRIBUNE By CAVAN W CONCANNON Associate Professor of Religion, University of Southern California (THE CONVERSATION) - Sometime in the late second century AD, Christians in the city of Rome organised a collection to send to the followers of Jesus in the city of Corinth. Modern-day scholars don’t know what the crisis was that prompted the donation – it could have been a plague or a famine. What they do know from fragments of a letter sent by the Corinthian bishop, Dionysios, is that a large sum of money was shipped to Corinth. As a scholar of early Christianity, I have written about this act of generosity. At a time when countries across the globe are struggling to fight the coronavirus and its economic impact, I argue modern society could learn from the actions of these early Christians. Sharing resources Some of the earliest Christian texts, written in the first and second centuries A.D., even before the time of Dionysios, show evidence for the pooling of economic resources. The letters of the apostle Paul, written during the first century, are among the earliest sources for Christian life. These letters frequently discuss aid that Paul and his followers collected in Greece and Turkey. The aid was intended for the “saints” in Jerusalem – likely a group of early followers of Jesus. Paul says in his letters that the purpose of the aid was to “remember the poor” in Jerusalem. Scholars debate whether Paul hoped to help a community in financial need or to show Jewish followers of Jesus in Jerusalem that Paul’s gentile converts were real members of the Jesus movement. Paul got contributions from multiple cities and regions. But this was the exception rather than the rule. The pooling of resources and their use among the early Christians were generally directed locally. Later literary evidence provides many examples of local charity. The second-century “Acts of the Apostles,” which provides a history of the early church, contains legends about Jesus’ apostles shortly after his death. One such story describes how Jesus’ followers organised a commune in Jerusalem soon after his death. Members relinquished property rights and shared everything in common. Similarly, the “Pastoral Epistles,” a collection of letters from the second century, speak of a fund that entitled widows, provided they were over 60 and had no other family to support them, to financial support from the community. Literature from this period shows that local, organised groups were common in ancient cities, ranging from burial societies, to guilds, to devotees of particular gods. Members of these groups paid dues that helped to fund burials, communal meals and other social activities. These groups provided community, but also helped to manage risk. A collection for Corinth By the end of the second century, a network of Christian groups in Rome had begun directing some of their local capital toward non-local needs. This included helping Christians who had been sent to the mines, which may have been linked to persecution of Christian communities. This network also provided financial support for impoverished Christian groups in other cities. Dionysios wrote a number of letters to Christian communities in the eastern Mediterranean regarding matters relating to theology, sexual practice and persecution of Christians. Fragments of these letters survive in the accounts of Eusebius, a fourth-century Christian historian. Dionysios’ letter to the Romans mentions the financial aid that was collected in Rome and sent to Corinth. Archaeological remains from Corinth around this time speak to a heightened concern over health. During this period, healing deities appeared for the first time on local Corinthian coinage. It was during this time that the first inscriptions honoring doctors appeared. There may have been fears of a plague, or an economic downturn in the city. The archaeological record indicates a marked drop in imports to the city at this time. Regardless of the cause, Corinth’s Christian community found itself in trouble. When a network of Christians in Rome learned about the situation in Corinth, a local leader named Soter organised a collection to provide aid, according to Dionysios. Thanking the Romans for their gift, Dionysios speaks about how the gift was part of a longer tradition in this network of Roman Christians: “For from the beginning this has been a custom for you, always acting as a benefactor to siblings in various ways and sending financial support to many assemblies in every city, thus relieving the need of those in want and supplying additional help to the siblings who are in the mines.” A network of support This story offers a window into an early shift occurring within some forms of early Christianity. While early Christians had formed networks that provided for hospitality and the sharing of news, ideas, and texts, sharing money was definitely not the

norm in the second century. For example, news, ideas and texts moved through the network of Ignatius of Antioch, the bishop of Antioch in the middle of the second century. However, despite the fact that the community in Antioch was experiencing distress, financial help was not offered. Dionysios’ letter is an indication of how some early Christian networks had begun to grow extensive and stable enough to direct their resources both to local and non-local needs. Further, this could happen because members of this network of Christian associations thought of themselves as “siblings,” as family. Sibling – or, in Greek, “adelphos” - was the name most frequently used by Christians for members of their associations. Christians and crises This impulse to channel care into the wider world during a crisis appears to stands in sharp contrast to what a few high-profile American Christians have said in response

Jerry Falwell Jr, a prominent evangelical leader and president of Liberty University, has been heavily criticised after announcing that students would be allowed to return to campus. He’s said the concerns about the virus are overblown. Conservative political commentator, Glenn Beck, who has spoken often of his faith, urged the government not to sacrifice the economy for the sake of protecting the vulnerable, elderly, and immunocompromised. On his March 24 radio show, Beck said, “I would rather have my children stay home and all of us who are over 50 go in and keep this economy going and working even if we all get sick. I’d rather die than kill the country. ‘Cause it’s not the economy that’s dying, it’s the country.” According to polling by the Pew Research Center released on March 19, a majority of white evangelicals believe “that the crisis has been blown out of proportion by the media.” This stands in contrast to the impulse among some early Christians, and, no doubt, many modern Christians as well. The two greatest health principles that we can teach our children is trust in God and proper nutrition.
A CHILD is never too young to be taught about the importance of health and being in good health. Especially now that there are an abundance of cases of non-communicable diseases taking our children’s lives. With two simple health principles, Jesus shows us how we can win the battle on poor health, and how to keep our children’s health in tact. Mark 5:35-43 tells the story of a man named Jairus and his family. He came to Jesus asking him to heal his daughter. But before long, Jairus’ daughter died before Jesus, Peter, James and John ever made it to his house. “Why trouble the master any further?”
said Jairus. A good question in my opinion. why trouble Jesus to come to your house when he has the power to speak things in existence? Yet the visit to Jairus’ house, as we later see, has a much greater, longer lasting purpose than we think. While there, Jesus saw as Jairus said, his daughter laying still in her bed. “Damsel, I say to you arise,” and immediately Jairus’ daughter arose and walked. The two greatest health principles that we can teach our children is trust in God and proper nutrition. As Jairus’ daughter awoke by command out of what may have seemed an eternal slumber, the first face she was greeted by was Jesus’. Every
morning when our children awake, the first face they should be greeted by is that of Jesus. Through prayer and daily devotion, children should be taught to seek Christ’s face when they rise in the morning and before they go to sleep at night. Concerning proper nutrition, Jesus commanded the parents to give her something to eat. Like the trust in God principle, what children consume on a daily basis rests in the hands of the parents. After such a great miracle it would have been unjust to give their daughter anything that would of perhaps undo what was done by Jesus. Proper
nutrition should be practiced all throughout the day and every day. Children’s meals should consist of portions of carbohydrates, proteins and starches. Each morning, their beverages should be sweetened with natural sweeteners as this helps with the up keeping of their cognitive energy. This decreases the risk of that feeling of “crashing” that they experience through the consumption of sugary drinks and foods. Gospel singer celebrates God’s love with new album

HE journey from first singing in church at age five, to all these years later releasing a gospel album on a virtual platform, has been one filled with many ups and downs for Anna Calixte. To finally have her record completed and released to public fills her with a feeling of “absolute joy”. “It has been a long time coming. There were many late night studio sessions, setbacks, illnesses and the list goes on, but I’m forever grateful for the journey,” she told Tribune Religion. “Being born into a musically inclined family, music has always been a part of my life, even before I knew I was able to sing. At the age of five, during an evening service at church, I sang my first song.” The title of the album is “Your Love/ Amou Ou” and focuses on God’s Agape (love) towards His people, and the love that people share with each other. It features songs from of various genres, including contemporary Christian music and R&B. “Whatever the sound, it depicts love. Each song on the album has a special meaning to me, but specifically the songs‘Your Love’ and ‘It’s gonna be alright’ are two of my personal favourites. ‘Your Love’ conveys the depth of God’s love for us. And ‘It’s gonna be alright’ expresses hope and has an R&B style and sound. In light of what is going on around the world, this song gives assurance that everything will work together for our good,” said Anna. Additional song titles on the album are “It has to be love”, “God’s got me”, “Your Love” (Creole version), and a tribute to the late gospel singer Lyrically Blessed (Japheth Ferguson). “Having launched the album on a virtual platform, there was a combination of mixed feelings. However, my main concern was ensuring that the viewers were blessed. The connection was still the
same and the feedback was heart-warming,” she said. And this feedback is deeply appreciated by Anna, who has been on this musical journey since her early childhood. She recalled a time when she was asked to sing at the opening of a revival service. Anna said the congregation stood in amazement to see a little girl sing with so much passion and confidence. It was at that time in her life she knew in her heart that something special was in store for her. “Music is my safe place. As a teenager I would spend hours with my mother and godfather learning French hymnals. I then ventured into leading worship services at 15. Although I was often told that I was anointed and gifted, I tried to remain humble because I knew it was all God’s doing and I wanted Him to be glorified. As a result, I’ve seen growth and gained favour that I never imagined. In 2014, I competed in ‘242 Untapped’, a national gospel singing contest that offers a platform for upcoming artists. Throughout this experience I connected with amazing people and was also privileged to share platforms with some of the best, including Jonathan Nelson, Maranda Curtis, Jonathan McReynolds, Todd Dulaney, Oslien Jadorte, Keith Jones and so many more,” she said. During this time of the coronavirus pandemic, Anna wants to encourage people to be prayerful. “Create a routine that’ll help you to remain productive. Start working on that one thing that you’ve always been passionate about but was placed on the back burner; pour your heart into it. Stay in touch with loved ones and take care of your body eat healthy, get plenty of sleep and exercise daily,” said Anna. Anna’s new album is currently available and streaming on digital platforms.
