WITH a mission to ignite leadership potential in the next generation, the Occupy Mentorship Programme recently hosted its Occupy Leadership Day seminar, a dynamic and inspiring event held at the National Training Agency. The seminar welcomed students from CW Sawyer Primary and iElite Sports Academy for a morning of motivation, practical learning, and goal setting.
Dr Ricardo Clarke, president and founder of the programme, says through its continued efforts, young Bahamians are being equipped with the tools, mindset, and motivation to occupy their place in leadership, now and in the future.
As a certified professional coach, motivational speaker, human resources consultant, recording artist, and ordained minister, Dr Clarke has long been passionate about shaping both character and career paths. Through the programme, which has positively impacted more than 500 students, he continues to focus on developing programs that foster student leadership and enhance interpersonal skills.
Running from 10am to 12.30pm, the seminar opened with a spirited presentation by Tamandra Cooper of URCA titled “Emerge: Discover the Leader Within You.” Ms Cooper encouraged students to embrace their individuality, recognise their inner strengths, and lead authentically. Her message setting a strong and empowering tone for the day.
Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minister Leon Lundy praised the initiative and its contribution to national development. Dr Clarke noted Mr Lundy highlighted the importance of programs like Occupy in shaping the country’s future leaders and fostering youth empowerment.
In another session with Dr Tanya McCartney, she touched on the topic “What is Leadership?”. During this time, Dr Clarke said Dr McCartney helped students redefine their understanding of leadership beyond titles and roles.
Drawing from her extensive professional background, she challenged students to lead with a sense of responsibility, discipline, and integrity.
“Closing out the sessions was communication strategist Valdez Russell, who led an engaging and practical talk on ‘Communicating Like a Leader’. Russell highlighted the importance of presence, body language, and active listening in leadership. His interactive style kept students energised and engaged as they learned how to use their voices effectively,” said Dr Clarke.
He said participants were also guided through a vision board exercise, an opportunity to creatively explore their goals and aspirations. This hands-on segment encouraged introspection, helping students visualise the type of leaders they aim to become.
“At the close of the seminar, students were treated to a healthy lunch and dessert, adding a special touch to a day filled with inspiration and learning,” said Dr Clarke. Behind the scenes, the success of the seminar was made possible thanks to the generous contributions of committed partners who support the programme’s vision of youth leadership development.

THE countdown is officially on for the fifth anniversary of the Bahamas Gospel Music Awards (BGMA), and this year, the excitement is unmatched. With five years of praise, power, and pure talent behind it, the BGMA has grown into one of the country’s most anticipated music events celebrating not only the artistry of gospel but the heart and faith that fuel it.
The momentum reached new heights with the official nominee announcement, hosted by Gandhi Pinder and DJ Godson, two familiar faces known for bringing energy and authenticity to the Bahamian gospel scene. This year’s nominations reveal was more than just a list, it was a moment of recognition for the hard work, devotion, and ministry behind the music.
Set to take place on Sunday, June 1, at the Baha Mar Convention Centre, the BGMA will once again roll out the red carpet for gospel’s biggest night. The event begins at 6pm.
As in previous years, the show is expected to deliver a night filled with soul-stirring performances, surprise collaborations, and heartfelt tributes according to organiser Travis Edgcombe.
What makes the BGMA special is its consistent commitment to celebrating excellence within the Bahamian gospel music industry.
Each artist nominated this year has “poured their heart into their work”, using music as a ministry and a message. Leading the nominations for 2025 are Akeem Gardiner and Antonio J Thompson, who both earned a remarkable ten nominations each. These two artists have clearly made their mark, resonating deeply with audiences and voters alike.
Not far behind is Eman, who secured nine nominations for his contributions, followed closely by Shara J and I Am Stacs, who each received seven nods. Edison Sumner and VoP earned six nominations, and both Bernadette Turnquest and Stephen Cefort Jr claimed five nominations apiece. Michelle Gardiner,
Colyn Kristopher, and Cara T Newton also made a strong showing this year, with four nominations each. Their inclusion reflects the variety and richness of talent across the local gospel landscape.
Additional standout nominees include Stermon, Willissa Nyobi Mackey, Southland Music, Frankelle Outten, and Young WYSTM —all of whom received three nominations. Their work this year has helped shape the evolving sound of Bahamian gospel, blending traditional mes sages with fresh creativity and flair.
While the evening will be filled with celebration, it will also include moments of reverence. One of the most prestigious honors of the night will be the pres entation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to gospel radio giant, Inspiration 107.9 FM. Known affectionately as “The Inspiration Station”, the radio outlet has been a foundational part of gospel broadcasting in The Bahamas. Operated by the Broadcasting Corporation of The Bahamas (BCB), the station was originally established in 1962. Since then, it has been a powerful spiritual companion to listeners across the islands, helping shape the musical and ministry journey of countless artists and audiences.
For many, Inspiration 107 isn’t just a station — it’s a part of their daily walk with faith. From airing local hits to global gospel chart-toppers, and from interviews to uplifting sermons, the station has played a pivotal role in bringing gospel into homes, cars, and hearts nationwide.
The BGMA 2025 promises to be more than just an awards show. It’s a full-circle celebration of ministry, music, and the message that gospel still matters. With five years now in the books, the foundation has been laid — but the movement is just getting started.
Fans can stay connected with the latest updates, exclusive nominee features, and behind-the-scenes content by following the BGMA on Facebook and Instagram. One thing is for certain — this June, the spirit of praise will be alive and well at Baha Mar.
