Prayer Works members ‘soar’ with faith during annual symposium By ALESHA CADET Tribune Features Reporter acadet@tribunemedia.net
U
nder the theme “Soaring On the Wings of Prayer”, the organisation Prayer Works International recently held its fifth annual symposium. The theme was inspired by Ephesians 6:18: “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.” The Prayer Symposium took place at the Church of God of Prophecy, Carmichael Road, with a celebratory breakfast the following morning at the Balmoral Club, Sandford Drive. Minister Patrice D Bain of Prayer Works International told Tribune Religion as the Friday, evening of the event on April 1 was the spiritual emphasis night, the speaker was Pastor Deneace Lloyd of True Vine Ministries. “As prayer is our mandate, prayer requests were made and mighty prayers went up for healing, deliverance and restoration. Eight intercessors were commissioned and blessed by all the ministers present, led by Pastor Terrance Forbes. They were charged by Pastor Lloyd who spoke with boldness and authority. She encouraged the intercessors to be committed, fearless and discerning of the times,” she said. “She described the characteristics of an eagle and charged them to soar on the wings of
prayer. A call was made for any sleeping intercessors to arise and awaken to the call. Prayers were offered up for those who responded, along with prophetic words spoken over the lives of those present. An unusual anointing covered the house and lives were changed and transformed,” said Minister Bain. At the Celebration Prayer Breakfast, Minister Bain said intercessors along with invited guests met for a time of rejoicing. Highlights of the prayer breakfast included an opening prayer by Minister Abigail Pratt. The hostesses for the event were Pastor Linda Baker and Deshaun Roberts. The guest speaker was Patricia Minnis, wife of the Bahamas’ former Prime Minister, Dr Hubert Minnis. Mrs Minnis spoke encouraging and inspiring words to the group that included topics like: reducing stress levels, lowering blood pressure and spreading their wings wide. “She reminded us of how God came through before and He will again. She assured us that ‘God gat you’. Isaiah 40:31 says ‘those who wait on the Lord will gain new strength; they will mount up like wings like eagles and they will soar,’ ” said Minister Bain. Presentations were then made by Minister Patrice Bain herself. Souvenir mugs were a part of the gift bags, along with other items. Special guests included Dr Lucille Richardson, Dr Ingrid Johnson, Pastor Dianne
Coverley, Minister Elaine Hinsey, and Pastor Deneace Lloyd. “Prophetic words were spoken by Pastor Dianne Coverley, Dr Ingrid Johnson and Dr Lucille Richardson over the attendees of what our Father will do in the lives of each individual. A spirit of excellence was evident and we celebrated for how the Lord helped us to achieve this milestone. Each participant was given a treat bag with prayer cloths and anointed oil. To God be the glory, great things he has done,” said Minister Bain.

What does this mean to me? I
n Exodus 12:26, the Israelites are told to be able to explain to their children what the Passover is all about when approached with the question: “What does this ceremony mean to you?” Let me put the same question to you: “What does the weekend of Good Friday and Easter mean to you?” How has your life changed as a result of your experience? Sometimes it is a matter of not knowing and continuing in ignorance of what God’s true plan is for our lives, at other times it is a matter of knowing better but not doing better. The best approach is to seek truth, apply it, and obey it faithfully. Our Sunday worship is another area where
we need to examine how genuine and sincere our actions are and when we are paying lip service or merely going through the motions. For those of us who celebrate the Eucharist daily or weekly, it provides an opportunity to remember, re-enact and personally experience the real presence of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on the night of his passion. What does your life mean to you? What are you doing with the short time you have on this earth? What are your primary relationships like and is God pleased with your attitude to family, friends, colleagues and strangers? Ponder these verses from 2 Thessalonians 1:11-12, “We constantly pray for you, that our God
REV ANGELA C BOSFIELD PALACIOUS MEDITATION
may count you worthy of his calling and that by his power he may fulfill every good purpose of yours and
every act prompted by your faith. We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.” What a difference it would make if this were to be the meaning that we had as to our calling and purpose in life. Imagine talking to your children about a faith that has you on fire for the Lord every day. Is it possible that they are losing interest in Christianity because we are too often mediocre in our response? Is it possible that our inability to explain the meaning of words and actions in our services has left them feeling detached and even disillusioned?
Let Paul’s prayer be our prayer for one another: “I always thank my God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus. For in him you have been enriched in every way— with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge— God thus confirming our testimony about Christ among you. Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.(1 Corinthians 1:4-9). I hope that all of us will make the time and effort to spend time with the
Lord during the weeks before Pentecost to come into a more intimate relationship with Him, and to study so that we have a clearer understanding of what we truly believe and why. We cannot teach what we do not know, and we cannot fake knowledge of God for very long. I pray that loving, worshipping and serving God will come to mean everything to each one of us. • Rev Angela Palacious, a motivational speaker and author of several devotional books, is an Anglican priest. Pope makes Easter plea for Ukraine peace, cites nuclear risk By FRANCES D'EMILIO Associated Press VATICAN CITY (AP) — On what is supposed to be Christianity's most joyful day, Pope Francis made an anguished Easter Sunday plea for peace in the "senseless" war in Ukraine and in other armed conflicts raging in the world, and voiced worry about the risk of nuclear warfare. "May there be peace for war-torn Ukraine, so sorely tried by the violence and destruction of this cruel and senseless war into which it was dragged," Francis said, speaking from the central balcony of St. Peter's Square. The pontiff had just finished celebrating Easter Mass in the square packed by faithful for the holiday for the first time since the pandemic began in early 2020. Applause erupted from many of the crowd,
estimated by the Vatican to number 100,000 in the square and on a nearby avenue, when he mentioned Ukraine. "Please, please, let us not get used to war,'' Francis pleaded, after denouncing "the flexing of muscles while people are suffering." Yet again, the pontiff didn't cite Russian President Vladimir Putin for the decision to launch the invasion and attacks against Ukraine on Feb. 24. People's hearts are filled with "fear and anguish, as so many of our brothers and sisters have had to lock themselves away in order to be safe from bombing," the pontiff said. "Let us all commit ourselves to imploring peace, from our balconies and in our streets,'' Francis said. "May the leaders of nations hear people's plea for peace."
POPE FRANCIS, center, is helped on the altar as he arrives to celebrate the Catholic Easter Sunday mass in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican, Sunday, April 17, 2022. For many Christians, this weekend marks the first time in three years they will gather in person to celebrate Easter Sunday. Photo:Alessandra Tarantino/AP In a clear reference to the threat of nuclear warfare, Francis quoted from a noted declaration of 1955: "'Shall we put an end to the human race, or shall mankind renounce war?'" He was quoting from a manifesto written by
philosopher Bertrand Russell and physicist Albert Einstein. The manifesto's text, sounding a grim warning against the consequences of nuclear warfare, was issued a few months after Einstein died. Meanwhile, in Britain, the leader of the
Anglican church, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, called for Russia to declare a ceasefire and withdraw from Ukraine. Noting that in the Eastern Orthodox church followed by many in Russia and Ukraine Sunday marks the start of Holy Week — with Easter coming on April 24 — Welby exhorted Russia to withdraw from Ukraine and commit to talks. Francis also drew attention to other wars in the speech known by its Latin name "Urbi et Orbi" — to the city and to the world. "May the conflict in Europe also make us more concerned about other situations of conflict, suffering and sorrow, situations that affect all too many areas of our world, situations that we cannot overlook and do not want to forget,'' Francis said. Two days after Palestinians and Israeli
police clashed in Jerusalem, Francis prayed that "Israelis, Palestinians and all the inhabitants of the Holy City, together with pilgrims, experience the beauty of peace, of living in brotherhood and of accessing Holy Places" in reciprocal respect. He called for peace and reconciliation for the peoples of Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Libya. Francis spoke plaintively about Yemen, "which suffers from a conflict forgotten by all, with continuous victims." He expressed hope that a recent truce would restore hope to that country's people. He also prayed that God grant "reconciliation for Myanmar, where a dramatic scenario of hatred and violence persists," and for Afghanistan, which is gripped by a humanitarian crisis, including food shortages.

Can religion and faith combat eco-despair? By RITA D SHERMA Associate Professor of Dharma Studies, Graduate Theological Union (THE CONVERSATION) – Scientists regularly study the ongoing degradation of Earth’s environment and track the changes wrought by a warming planet. Economists warn that intensifying disasters are harming people’s quality of life. And policymakers focus on crafting rules to diminish the health and environmental effects of humanity’s growing footprint. What is the role of philosophers and people of faith in this bigger discussion around the environment and sustainability? What is green spirituality? Green spirituality is an orientation to the divine, or supreme reality, that is grounded in our experience of life on planet Earth. It respects the miracle of life on this planet and recognizes our relationship with it. Such a spirituality can have God or the divine as the focus, or it can be oriented toward the Earth and its ecosystems for those outside of organized religion. It encourages a contemplative and harmonious relationship to the Earth. Green spirituality seeks to harness the spiritual traditions of the world to energize the effort to restore planetary ecosystems and stop future harms. The rights of nature movement wants to give sacred rivers the same legal protections as people. Why do spiritual and religious teachings belong as part of the global conversation on the environment? First, 80 percent of the world’s population practices an established religion or a spiritual tradition that offers community, support and resources for resilience. Second, as I have written in my new book on religion and sustainability, better technology will help human communities restore ecosystems. More and
better data, such as computations to forecast disasters, will also be helpful. But both are inadequate in the face of human denial and recalcitrance. In my book, I write: “Planetary survival is now predicated upon the alignment of our notions of both human and ecological rights with our highest principles. As such, ways of knowing that are embedded in religion, philosophy, spiritual ethics, moral traditions, and a culture that values the community and the commons – as an essential resource for the transformation necessary for environmental regeneration and renewal – are indispensable.” In other words, people on Earth need to tap into the ways of thinking from these faith traditions to address the environmental crises we face now. Can faith and religion help counter rising eco-anxiety? Catastrophic wildfires across the planet, extreme weather patterns that destroy homes and histories, degraded soil, toxic air, unsafe water and the desecrated beauty of places we have loved are causing climate trauma and eco-anxiety. For those who are acutely aware of the cliff edge on which we stand as a species and as a planetary community, the despair evoked by the magnitude of the disaster is almost unbearable. Religions, faiths, and spiritual practices can help in unique ways. In this space people can find community, peaceful practices of meditation, prayer, embodied sacred actions that include rituals and liturgies, and a ‘long view’ informed by the tragedies and triumphs faced by spiritual ancestors. Faith can provide hope and resilience in the midst of crises. How do different faith traditions treat respect for nature? Religions may disagree on many things, but each contains philosophical or theological orientations that can be interpreted
FAITH AND EARTH and applied in ways that protect the Earth. Some traditions such as Hindu, Yogic, Indigenous and others see the self as a microcosm of macrocosm, or a part of the greater whole. And, a profound sacred immanence, or integral divine presence, is woven through their philosophies. For these spiritual traditions, religious practice integrates trees, flowers, sacred groves, sanctified terrains, rivers, mountains and elements of the entire ecosphere into liturgical and personal practice. Christian ecotheology focuses on stewardship and the ethics of Earth justice. A well-known Muslim ecotheologian speaks of the Earth as a mosque in reference to a saying (hadith) of the prophet – which renders the entire Earth as sacrosanct. Jewish ecological thinkers have envisaged the idea of “Shomrei Adamah” (Keepers of the Earth), which connects humanity and the Earth through divine love. Buddhism’s spiritual aim is the absolute awareness of interconnectedness and mutual causality. Ahimsa, or noninjury to living beings and the Earth, is
the highest doctrinal principle in Hinduism and Buddhism, and it is intensely followed in Jainism. How are organised religions putting environmental protection into practice? Many initiatives and conversations are happening among religions, and among interreligious leadership and international bodies – most importantly, the United Nations initiatives. Some important conversations include the Interfaith Rainforest Initiative, which brings the dedication, impact, and moral authority of different faiths to restore the world’s rainforests and help empower the Indigenous peoples who view themselves as their protectors. Greenfaith is a global, multireligious climate and environmental movement. I also serve on the advisory board of the Yale Forum on Religion and Ecology, a pioneering international interreligious project at Yale University started by scholars Mary Evelyn Tucker and John Grim that ignited the academic field of religion and ecology as a global engaged
force for religion.

In November 2017, the UN “Environment Programme,” realising the significance of religious communities as key actors, founded the Faith for Earth Initiative to engage with faithbased organisations as partners, at all levels, toward achieving the sustainable development goals and realizing the 2030 agenda. The initiative affirms that “Spiritual values drive individual behaviours for more than 80 per cent of people.” In fall 2020, the Parliament of the World’s Religions and the UN Environment Programme jointly published a book titled “Faith for Earth – A Call for Action,” which provides an overview of the diversity of religious principles and practices that support action for the protection of the Earth. • This article is republished from The Conversation, an independent and nonprofit source of news, analysis and commentary from academic experts. Dede Robertson, wife of religious broadcaster, dies at 94 FORMER Republican presidential hopeful Pat Robertson gives a thumbs-up as he and his wife, Dee Dee, acknowledge applause at the Republican National Convention in New Orleans, Tuesday, August 17, 1988. By BEN FINLEY Associated Press NORFOLK, Virginia (AP) — Dede Robertson, the wife of religious broadcaster Pat Robertson and a founding board member of the Christian Broadcasting Network, died Tuesday at her home in Virginia Beach, the network said in a statement. Robertson was 94. The statement did not provide her cause of death. Robertson became a born-again Christian several months after her husband found his faith. The couple, who met at Yale University in 1952, embarked on a journey that included living in a roachinfested commune in New York before Pat Robertson bought a tiny television station in Virginia that would become the Christian Broadcasting Network. He later ran for president of the United States in 1988, with his wife campaigning by his side. “Mom was the glue that held the Robertson family together," said Gordon Robertson, one of her four children, and the president
and CEO of CBN. “She was always working behind the scenes. If it weren’t for Mom, there wouldn’t be a CBN.” Adelia “Dede” Elmer was born in Columbus, Ohio, to middle-class Catholic Republicans. She got her bachelor's degree from Ohio State and a master's in nursing from Yale. Robertson's future husband was the son of a Southern Baptist, Democratic US senator. Eighteen months after meeting, they ran off to be married by a justice of the peace, knowing that neither family would approve. Robertson's husband was interested in politics until he found religion, she told The Associated Press in 1987. He stunned her by pouring out their liquor, tearing a nude print off the wall and declaring he had found the Lord. They moved into the commune in Bedford-Stuyvesant because Robertson said God had told him to sell all his possessions and minister to the poor. Robertson told The AP she was tempted to go back to Ohio, "but I realised that was not
what the Lord would have me do ... I had promised to stay, so I did.” Pat Robertson later heard God tell him to buy the small TV station in Portsmouth, Virginia, which would become a global religious broadcasting network. He ran the network's flagship programme, the “700 Club,” for half a century before stepping down last fall. In her autobiography, Robertson recalled bridling at staying at home and her husband’s refusal to help around the house. “I was a Northerner, and Northern men just generally help around the house a little more,” she said. “I noticed the further south we moved, the less he did.” Her attitude changed after she had her own born-again experience at a church service, she told The AP. “I began to see how important what he was doing really was.” Robertson said that women should not work outside the home while their children are young unless they must. She reared her kids and worked as a nursing professor after they went to school.

Upcoming Da Crazy Praise Party says ‘no’ to violence and ‘yes’ to Jesus By JEFFARAH GIBSON Tribune Features Writer jgibson@tribunemedia.net GOSPEL fans are being invited to one of the biggest praise parties on the island for a night that promises to be a fun, inspirational and uplifting encounter. “Da Crazy Praise Party” is being spearheaded by Maurice Fawkes – popularly known as DJ Godson – who has been instrumental in changing way the gospel music is experienced locally. He is hosting the event on April 29 at the Sports Centre (Carnival Grounds). The event is also being held in collaboration with The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture. It begins at 7.30pm. Though it is intended for youth, adults are invited to join in the praise party as well. “This concept for Da Crazy Praise Party is to show young people that you can have just as much fun or even more, giving God a crazy praise,” DJ Godson told Tribune Religion. “At the event, I will have live performances from the whose
who in gospel music in the Bahamas and international artists. Da Crazy Praise Party is an annual event which is now in it's fifth year. However, the Lord last year gave me a sub theme for the party, which is ‘Da Stop Da Violence’. So I have been using this party to not only have fun and win souls, but also to wage war against the spirit of
violence in this country that is touching so many homes.” The event will feature performances by artists such as Nigel Lewis, Christopher Roberts & Friends, Cara T Newton, Shara J, Shannette Hepburn, Oslien Jadorte, Lavonia Burrows, Big Bruh, Christian Massive, Nate P, Najie Dunn, Mr Blaxx, Joinae Gibson, Averia Rolle and more.
There will also be prophetic declarations by Dr Felicia Archer, Prophet Don Clarke, Rev Dr Diana Francis, Apostle Dave & Pastor Fanchon Braynen, Leonardo Burrows, and Pastor Dr Carlos Reid. The event is being covered by Prophet Leo A Adderley. There will be praise and worship, prayer, rap music, R&B and reggae music, and of course DJ Godson will be on the wheels of steel. “God gave me this vision and mandated me to spread the gospel through outreaches such as Da Crazy Praise Party. He also wanted me to go in warfare against the spirit of violence that is plaguing this country. I am tired of seeing young men constantly being gunned down in the streets. I'm tired of seeing mothers crying. I'm tired of seeing little children left without a father,” he said. At the end of it all, he hopes the event will be an effective to to evangelise those in attendance and give them a lifechanging encounter. “I pray at the end of the day souls are won for Christ.
Secondly, pray that we will bring awareness to all of the violence going on and that the youths of society will say no to violence and say yes to Jesus. I also hope that we will get the attention of corporate Bahamas and that they will sponsor more positive events like this that can bring a change to our country,” he said. “People should attend so we as Bahamians come together as a united front to let people know that we want the violence to stop, and also to send the message of love and unity and show persons we serve one God and that we can actually be united to carry out God's mandate. So, I encourage those of you that want to see a change in this Bahamas to come out. I challenge every bishop, pastor, prophet, evangelist, teacher, intercessor and believer to be out there on April 29 so we can let the enemy know he is defeated.” DJ Godson will also use the event to launch “Da Crazy Praise” MixTape Volume 3.
