What does friendship with God mean?

CHRISTIANITY

was never meant to be a religion; it was intended to be a daily walk and personal communion with a friend.

Great biblical servants of God lived their lives relying heavily on a personal relationship with God to accomplish the things they did. Moses would have never been able to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt without a relationship with God. Paul would have also never been able to accomplish the great works he did.

Even while on Earth, Jesus, who is the Christian example of how humans should live and operate, demonstrated that a personal communion with God is the most fulfilling aspect of life.

Yet with numerous examples in the written word of what Christianity looks like, why is God still a stranger to some Christians?

"They are stuck in religion; that is the reason why he is stranger. Religion is based on a set of rules, restrictions, don’ts and laws that keep people in bondage. Christianity, when practised according to the evidence in the Bible, is more fulfilling. God wants us to be free.

Jesus Christ paid the price so that we can be liberated

from any bondage, even the bondage that religion brings," said Sharon, a Christian Tribune Religion reader. “Some people have a one-sided view of who God is. They believe He is an angry judge who only sits on a throne waiting to curse humanity and

throw the perpetrators of His law into hell. Nothing could be further than the truth,” said Tasha, a bornagain believer.

"I have been learning God and learning about who He is and His character. This takes time, patience, and it also takes a personal revelation

from Him about who He is. When I first got saved, it was never like how it is now. I was taught certain things about God and the Christian life that weren’t necessarily true. I was so used to keeping God at arm's length when I first got saved, I did not benefit from the abundant life

He had already planned for me. I got tired of that. So, I made a commitment to spend time with God; sometimes just sitting silently and listening for His voice and having some type of communion with Him. After doing this consistently I knew my ideas about God shifted

and I began to see Him as my closet friend.”

God performs many roles. According to the Bible, He is provider, saviour, deliverer, comforter and more. Many people seek Him in times of distress or need, and while any situation is an opportunity for people to get to know Him, His desires are beyond the superficial.

"He wants people to spend time with Him and grow intimate with Him,” said Baptist follower Romel.

“The same effort we put into making and maintaining other relationships is the very same effort we all should exert in to getting to know Him better. He is inviting us and He wants to lead us and guide is in all of our ways. You can imagine what life would be life if Christ directs in every situation of life. That is what this life is all about.

He added:"I have fun with Jesus; He is my friend. He loves me and I love Him. He said in His word ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you’, and that is the most comforting thing I have ever heard. When no one is around for me to talk to, I have Him; he is available 24/7. He is always there and willing. The relationship I have with Him is more satisfying that anything I have ever experienced."

‘Tarry awhile’: how the Black spiritual tradition of waiting expectantly could enrich your approach to Lent

(THE CONVERSATION) Every year, hundreds of millions of Catholic and Protestant Christians around the world celebrate the season of Lent. For the 40 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday, observers devote themselves to fasting, prayer and acts of generous giving.

Lots of people, who might not be observant, also take this time to give something up. In 2023, Country Living ran a list of 32 ideas for what you might want to curtail, from “commenting on social media”, “road rage” and “ignoring your health” to “speeding”, “snacking” and “singleuse plastic”.

For Lent 2024, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby has chosen a new book by British theologian Selina Stone, as his annual recommendation.

Entitled “Tarry Awhile: Wisdom from Black Spirituality for People of Faith”, this selection speaks to the growing salience of Black spirituality globally, especially in regards to Christianity.

By 2050, 40 percent of the world’s Christians will live in sub-Saharan Africa. Black spirituality will increasingly influence global Christianity as the 21st century continues. The Archbishop’s Lenten book choice cordially redirects religious literary attention to the influence of Black spirituality in Anglican thought. People in a church service

The most intriguing aspect of this selection, though, is what, for many, will be an infrequently used word in the title. “To tarry” is to linger in anticipation – be that of a person or an occurrence. In a Christian context, it is about waiting on God, expectantly.

“Tarrying gives us an opportunity to rest,” Welby writes in his foreword, “to see the realities of the world more clearly and to imagine more boldly what the world could be”.

Stone, in her introduction, says the practice recognises “the interdependence of the individual and the community for encounter with God”. She exhorts her readers

– whether tarrying, as a tradition, feels like home to them or is entirely new – to be open, as they wait for the justice and peace so sorely missing from the world.

Tarrying in the Christian tradition

The Bible uses the word “tarry” at least 30 times. In particular, as Stone highlights, it is the word (in the King James version) the Gospel of Matthew uses, when Jesus is in the garden of Gethsemane with his disciples. Overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death, he asks his disciples to, “tarry here and watch with me”.

In biblical literature, tarrying refers to an individual or community

patiently, longingly waiting in one setting or state for something. This might be a person or an event or an act of spiritual or political liberation.

The concept of tarrying surfaces in the historical development of academic Christian theology. It remains popular among Black Christians, but it is not exclusive to this religious group. In fact, it is not exclusive to religious communities in particular either. It is a term used by philosophers, psychoanalysts and religious leaders alike.

In Black Christian spirituality, the concept of tarrying exists as a familiar, mature spiritual ritual that practically manifests in a variety of ways. After

discipline. It serves to clear the way for God’s presence to manifest in even the most mundane, profane aspects of everyday life. Those who tarry prioritise doing so when the anxieties of everyday life compete for one’s mental, emotional, and physical attention – but fail.

Religiously, tarrying means replacing the attention seeking anxieties of everyday life with a focus on the spiritual, the social and the relational. Tarrying functions as an expression of love, devotion and desire. In a world where one’s attention can be diverted more quickly and easily than ever, tarrying is a choice to shun one thing for another.

a church service or an event concludes, worshippers might gather near the altar or remain in their seats, ignoring the socialising around them to devote extra time to prayer. A Christian might sit alone in an empty chapel lost in prayer, conveying their needs and anxieties to God, emboldened by the biblical view that God responds favourably to those who spend time with him.

Like meditating, tarrying prioritises mindfulness over negligence or indifference. It encourages you to live in a way that gives significance to each given moment.

Within the Pentecostal tradition, specifically, tarrying is seen as a spiritual

Culturally, tarrying calls for rejecting the rat-race mentality characteristic of capitalist societies. In many ways, it is antithetical to the modernist assumptions that drive the glorification of secular reason and the worship of production.

In this way, tarrying unambiguously relates to Lent. The Lenten emphasis on fasting, prayer and ideologically driven generosity and charitable giving aligns with tarrying’s emphasis on communal life.

Christians observing Lent give in the expectation that their giving will positively contribute to the life of another. In a world where people are often encouraged to forsake relationship for productivity, perhaps all of us would do well to partake in a little more tarrying in our everyday lives.

In ‘Bob Marley: One Love’ film, what’s his faith? And why is marijuana deemed holy to the Rastafari?

The biopic “Bob Marley: One Love” has been a box-office hit in the United States and several other countries. The film, starring Kingsley Ben-Adir, is focused on the Rastafari legend’s story during the making of his 1977 album “Exodus” while leading up to a momentous concert in his native Jamaica.

The Rastafari faith is rooted in the Caribbean island in the 1930s. Its message was spread across the world in the 1970s by Marley — the faith’s most famous exponent. For decades, Rastafari have been prosecuted for their ritualistic use of marijuana. Some of those laws have eased, granting Rastafari sacramental authorization to grow the marijuana they deem sacred.

Here is a quick look at the faith's beliefs and history:

WHAT DO RASTAFARI BELIEVE?

The Rastafari faith is rooted in 1930s Jamaica, growing as a response by Black people to white colonial oppression. The beliefs are a melding of Old Testament teachings and a desire to return to Africa.

Both are crucial to Marley's lyrics and worldview. In “The Bible and Bob Marley: Half the Story Has Never Been Told,” author Dean A MacNeil writes that Marley's personal Bible was a King James version. It included on its cover a photocopied image of the late Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie, who is worshipped by most Rastafari.

The Rastafari message was spread across the world in the 1970s by Marley and Peter Tosh, another Jamaican reggae legend and globally known Rastafari.

In the film “One Love,” the actor who plays Marley mentions “Jah” several times.

That's because Rastafari’s personal relationship with

“Jah,” or God, is considered central to the faith.

Rastafari reject materialist values and often practice a strict oneness with nature. They also let their hair grow, uncombed, into dreadlocks.

In several scenes in the film — produced with the involvement of the Marley estate — Marley sings to large crowds of people who wave Rastafari flags in the green, gold and red colours of the faith.

WHY DO RASTAFARI USE SACRAMENTAL MARIJUANA?

Rastafari followers believe the use of marijuana is directed in biblical passages and that the “holy herb” induces a meditative state and brings them closer

to the divine. The faithful smoke it as a sacrament in chalice pipes or cigarettes called “spliffs,” add it to plant-based organic stews and place it in fires as a burnt offering.

For decades, many have been jailed and endured racial and religious profiling by law enforcement because of their marijuana use. Many also were treated as second-class citizens across the Caribbean islands, looked down on for their dreadlocks and use of marijuana.

WHO BROUGHT MARIJUANA TO THE CARIBBEAN?

“Ganja,” as marijuana is known in the Caribbean, has a long history in Jamaica, and its arrival predates the Rastafari

faith. Indentured servants from India brought the cannabis plant to the island in the 19th century, and it gained popularity as a medicinal herb.

As public opinion and policy continues to shift across the world toward the legalization of marijuana for both medical and recreational purposes, Rastafari are demanding for broader relaxation to curb persecution and ensure freedom of worship.

Some nations, including the Caribbean nation of Antigua & Barbuda, have granted the Rastafari authorization to grow and smoke the herb that they deem holy.

WHO IS HAILE SELASSIE?

In one of the first scenes of the film, Marley mentions this name. That's because most of the many Rastafari sects worship Selassie. This is rooted in Jamaican Black nationalist leader Marcus Garvey’s 1920s prediction that a “Black king shall be crowned” in Africa, ushering in a “day of deliverance.”

When an Ethiopian prince named Ras Tafari, who took the name Haile Selassie I, became emperor in 1930, the descendants of the enslaved in Jamaica took it as proof that Garvey’s prophecy was being fulfilled. When Selassie visited Jamaica in 1966, he was greeted by adoring crowds, and some Rastafari insisted miracles and other mystical occurrences took place during his visit to the island.

remains inflamed by the ongoing Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, and many in the enclave are going hungry. Even where food is available, there is little beyond canned goods, and prices are high.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and begins with the sighting of the crescent moon.

For many of the world's 1.8 billion Muslims, fasting began Monday, after an announcement from officials in Saudi Arabia, which is home to the holiest places in Islam.

Muslim communities may start Ramadan on different days, due to declarations by multiple Islamic authorities around the globe on whether the crescent has been sighted or different methodologies used to determine the start of the month.

In the midst of the prayer event there was also praise, and a number of Christian performances were highlighted throughout the night. Performers included the Church of God of Prophecy’s interpretive dancers, the Christian Life dance troupe, an Angelic Baptist Church inspirational dancer, and DJ Godson.

A charge was given to the crowd to continue to offer up heartfelt prayers and lift up the nation, as individually, each person has the power to make a difference.
