RELIGIOUS LEADERS RECALL PRINCE PHILIP’S SPIRITUAL CURIOSITY LONDON (AP) — Churches in Britain held services last Sunday to remember Prince Philip as people of many religions reflected on a man whose gruff exterior hid a strong personal faith and deep curiosity about others’ beliefs. Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby led a service of remembrance at Canterbury Cathedral in southeast England for the husband of Queen Elizabeth II, who died Friday at the age of 99. Welby, who is set to preside at Philip’s funeral on Saturday at Windsor Castle, led prayers for Philip, also known as the Duke of Edinburgh, and contemplated “a very long life, remarkably led”. In London’s Westminster Abbey, where Philip married the then-Princess Elizabeth in 1947, Dean of Westminster David Hoyle remembered the former naval officer’s “self-effacing sense of service”. Most people’s glimpses of Philip in a religious setting were of him beside the queen at commemorative services, or walking to church with the royal family on Christmas Day. But his religious background and interests were more varied than his conventional role might suggest. Born into the Greek royal family as Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, he was baptized in the Greek Orthodox Church. His father was exiled and his family left Greece when Philip was very young. He became an Anglican when he married Elizabeth, who as queen is supreme governor of the Church of England. In the 1960s, he helped set up St. George’s House, a religious study center at the royal family’s Windsor Castle seat, where Philip would join clergy, academics, businesspeople and politicians to discuss the state of the world. He was a regular visitor to Mount Athos, a monastic community and religious sanctuary in Greece, and was a long-time patron of the Templeton Prize, a lucrative award for contribution to life’s “spiritual dimension” whose winners

Philip’s longstanding environmentalism, which saw him serve as patron of the Worldwide Fund for Nature, was connected to his faith. He organised a 1986 summit in Assisi, Italy where representatives of Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism and Hinduism pledged to protect the environment. Philip said at the time that “a new and powerful alliance has been forged between the forces of religion and the forces of conservation”. Blunt-spoken and quick-witted, Philip also was known for making remarks that could be deeply offensive, some of them sexist and racist. But former Archbishop of York John Sentamu, who was born in Uganda, said those who saw Philip as a bigot were wide of the mark. “If somebody challenged him, you would enter into an amazing conversation,” Sentamu told the BBC. “The trouble was that because he was the Duke of Edinburgh, the husband of the queen, people had this deference. “I’m sure sometimes he regretted some of those phrases, but in the end it’s a pity that people saw him as somebody who makes gaffes,” Sentamu said. “Behind those gaffes was an expectation of a comeback, but nobody came back, and the gaffe, unfortunately, stayed.” Inderjit Singh, a prominent British Sikh leader, said Philip had a strong knowledge of Sikhism and “contributed to the understanding and harmony between differing faith communities”.

Is magic immoral? It played a role in the development of early Christianity By SHAILY SHASHIKANT PATEL Assistant Professor of Early Christianity, Virginia Tech
(THE CONVERSATION) – People are fascinated by magic. TV shows like “WandaVision” and “The Witcher”, books like the “Harry Potter” series, plus comics, movies and games about people with powers that can’t be explained by God, science or technology, have all been wildly popular for years. Modern pop culture is a testament to how enchanted people are by the thought of gaining special control over an uncertain world. “Magic” is often defined in the West as evil or separate from “civilised” religions like Christianity and also from the scientific observation and study of the world. But the irony is that magic was integral to the development of Christianity and other religions – and it informed the evolution of the sciences, too. As an expert in ancient magic and early Christianity, I study how magic helped early adherents develop a Christian identity. One part of this identity was morality: the inner sense of right and wrong that guides life decisions. Of course, the darker side of this development is the slide into supremacy: seeing one’s own tradition as morally superior and rightfully dominant. My work tries to return magic to its proper place as a part of the Christian tradition. I show how false distinctions between magic and Christianity were created to elevate ancient Christianity and how they continue to advance Christian supremacy today.
IN early Christian stories, the magician Simon uses magic immorally to try and gain power and influence. Photo: The Metropolitan Museum of Art
The origins of magic In Western culture, magic is often defined in opposition to religion and science. This is problematic because all three concepts are rooted in colonialism. For centuries, many European scholars based their definitions of religion on Christianity, while at the same time describing the practices and beliefs of non-Christians as “primitive,” “superstitious” or “magical”. This sense of superiority helped Europe’s Christian monarchies justify conquering and exploiting Indigenous peoples around the world in a bid to “civilise” them, often through extreme brutality. Imperialist legacies still color how some people think about nonChristians as “others”, and how they label others’ rituals and religions as “magic”.
But this modern understanding of magic doesn’t map neatly onto the world of the first Christians. “Magic” has always had many meanings. From what scholars can gather, the word itself was imported from the Persian word “maguš”, which may have described a class of priests with royal connections. Sometimes, these “magi” were depicted as performing divination, ritual activities or educating young boys who would take the throne. Greek texts retained this earlier meaning and also added new ones. The famous ancient Greek historian Herodotus writes that the Persian magi interpreted dreams, read the skies and performed sacrifices. Herodotus uses the Greek word “magos”. Sophocles, a Greek playwright, uses the same term in his tragedy “Oedipus the King”, when Oedipus berates the seer Tiresias for scheming to overthrow him. Although these two Greek texts both date from roughly the early 400s BC, “magician” has different connotations in each. Starting in the first century BC, Latin authors also adapted the Persian term into “magus”. While defending himself at trial for performing “evil deeds of magic”, the second-century philosopher Apuleius claimed he both was and was not a “magician”. He insisted he was like a high priest or a natural philosopher rather than someone who uses unsavory means to get what they want. What’s interesting here is that Apuleius uses one idea of high philosophical magic to combat another idea of crude, self-interested magic. Christianity and magic The first Christians inherited these varied ideas of magic alongside their Roman neighbors. In their world, people who did “magical” deeds like exorcisms and healings were common. Such people sometimes explained religious or philosophical texts and ideas, as well. This presented a problem for early Christian authors: If wondrous deeds were fairly commonplace, how could a group looking to attract followers compete with “magicians”? After all, Christian leaders like Jesus, Peter and Paul did extraordinary deeds, too. So Christian writers made distinctions in order to elevate their heroes. Take the biblical story of Simon the magician. In Acts 8, Simon’s magical
deeds entice the Samaritans and convince them to follow him until the evangelist Philip performs even more amazing miracles, converting all the Samaritans and Simon, too. But Simon relapses when he tries to buy the power of the Holy Spirit, prompting the Apostle Peter to rebuke him. This story is where we get the sin of simony: the purchase of religious office. As I’ve discussed elsewhere, texts like this do not depict real events. They are teaching tools aimed at showing new adherents the differences between good Christian miracle workers and evil magicians. The earliest converts needed such stories because wonder workers looked a lot alike. Christianity and morality To some ancient people, stories of Jesus’ miracles probably didn’t seem far removed from the deeds magicians performed for money in the marketplace. In fact, the church fathers had to shield Jesus and the Apostles against accusations of practicing magic. They include Origen of Alexandria, who in the middle of the third century AD defended Christianity against Celsus, a pagan philosopher who charged Jesus with being a magician. Celsus argued that the miracles of Jesus were no different from the magic performed by marketplace sorcerers. Origen agreed the two shared superficial similarities, but claimed they were fundamentally different because magicians cavorted with demons while Jesus’ wonders led to moral reformation. Like the story of Simon the magician, Origen’s disagreement with Celsus was a means of teaching his audience how to tell the difference between morally suspect magicians who sought personal gain and miracle workers who acted for the benefit of others. Ancient authors invented the idea that the miracles of Christians possessed inherent moral superiority over non-Christian magic because ancient audiences were as enticed by magic as modern ones. But in elevating Christianity above magic, these writers created false distinctions that linger even today. • This article is republished from The Conversation, an independent and nonprofit source of news, analysis and commentary from academic experts. Room to grow – Part I
W
HAT’S the word for the sound you make when you just burst out laughing? I want one that is more emphatic than “ha ha” or “LOL.” Even “ROFL” isn’t enough. Whatever the sound is, it’s the one I made yesterday when starting this article. Here’s the scenario: I was all set to begin writing for this new series and wouldn’t you know it: My computer died. My Wi-Fi went on the blink. My phone died. Whatever that sound of disbelief, incredulity, total and utter surprise at the ridiculousness of the situation is, that is the sound I made. Here I am about to discuss making room for new experiences when, out of the blue, a maelstrom of drama hits me. And what did I do? Burst out laughing. A few years ago, these issues, as trivial as they seem, would have crippled me emotionally. Why? Well, I had so much bottled up inside, so much proverbial “junk” that I didn’t have the capacity to deal with the slightest challenge. I would be reduced to a blithering ball of insecurity, intimidation and alarm at the slightest threat to my precarious peace of mind. It was only after I got the help I needed, and began taking control of what and who I allowed access to me, did I begin the steps toward freeing myself, becoming more whole in the process. And why did I share all that? We talk about resolving issues all the time. Our goal is to be drama free, trauma free and totally together. And these goals – lofty as they are – are met to some extent. But here’s the caveat. Once we rid ourselves of some of the junk, what do we do with the emotional and mental room that is left? And here come the questions: 1. “But Ayanna, after you have been through such a trying time, shouldn’t you take a break? “ To be sure, the temptation is to take a break. But that is so dangerous. Yes, down time is a necessary remedy, but please be careful. Many times that down time turns into excuses that can put a pause on what could possibly be a great opportunity to get something started. Taking a break, for whatever length of time, can lead to idleness, which in turn can lead to stagnation. We don’t want that. Instead, I believe that when we have space, we should fill it. Not to the point where we stretch ourselves thin trying to keep up, but in order to maintain focus, build motivation and fortify for coming trauma – we need to get busy. 2. “But Ayanna, shouldn’t we take

some time to pray and wait on the Lord to answer us, leading in the right direction?” My answer to that is an emphatic yes! But we can pray and fast and wait – as we all must – particularly when direction is needed; but you don’t want to be Moses at this point. You know Moses, standing at the seashore praying your heart out, when you’ve already got the rod in your hand. Our series then is called “Room to Grow”. Since we have miraculously worked on at least one of the issues that held us back, we now have that room to move ahead. We can reroute that mental energy to the goal of pursuit and achievement. Let’s chat about what to do with this newfound capacity. Room to expand beyond what you once were. Room to step out of the shadow of old experiences and create new ones with precision, intention and focus. For the last few weeks, I’ve been absolutely in love with 2 Kings chapter 4. Beyond the miracles and the amazing feats of faith performed
by the Prophet Elisha, there is an underlying theme of making room, expanding beyond limitations that grasped my attention. As we explore, we’ll look at characters who made concerted effort to anticipate, actualize and act.

NON-PROFIT ‘LOVE YOURSELF HOLISTICALLY’ SPREADS HOPE AMONG CAT ISLAND RESIDENTS BY ALESHA CADET TRIBUNE FEATURES WRITER ACADET@TRIBUNEMEDIA.NET
O
UTREACH efforts are at the heart of the Love Yourself Holistically Organisation’s mission. So they are happy to report that they were able to complete a successful mission trip to Cat Island over the Easter weekend. They distributed over 350 hot meals, 300 bags of groceries, 1,200lbs of meat, 100 goodie bags for kids, hundreds of pieces of clothing, supplies for a local orphanage, and lots of prayers and love. “The gratitude and love that the people of Cat Island expressed let us know that it was all worth it,” said Eustacia Jennings, LYHO member. Major sponsors for the outreach initiative were the Dynamic Healing Wellness Centre and the Child and Adolescent Health Care/General Practice. Items were sorted, packaged and shipped on the mail boat to arrive before the event. LYHO team member Stacy Strachan and her husband Hartman Strachan, residents of Cat Island, did all the groundwork and arrangements for the trip. The remaining 12 team members from New Providence flew and took the mail boat to the island for a weekend of activities that targeted various parts of the community. LYHO members distribute groceries, clothes and Easter goodies to the residents of Cat Island. carry out this specific task. The goal is to bring healing and love to people who are hurting, especially women. Their approach is to ensure every aspect of person is strengthened – physically through its annual fun run/walks and spiritually through weekly fasting, prayer and annual retreats. The organisation also assists in financial and health areas, offering advice during breakout sessions and seminars, and through developing social connections during community outreach activities. “Our mission is to reach out to young ladies and women in our society. Our desire is to spiritually reach them in the areas of body, mind and soul. With this being our focus, we decided to launch this platform for women by hosting a threeday Powerful Women’s Conference with inspiring speakers and dynamic events. The first conference was held in February 2018, where we hoped to continue in our pursuit of helping to change lives annually. We have expanded our reach to men and women over the years and now to the Family Islands,” said Eustacia. During the recent trip to Cat Island, she said, they visited places like the Dumfries Primary School, where they distributed bags of groceries along with hot meals. Because it was the Easter weekend, they also handed out special goodie bags to the children filled with treats. “On Saturday, April 3, we broadcasted live our church service from our beachfront location, proclaiming the love and good news of Christ. Many persons were blessed as we have had over 2,000 persons viewing the service online. On Sunday, April 4, we visited and fellowshipped with several local churches to promote the outreach activities. Father Miller at the St Peter’s Anglican Church in Knowles, Pastor Storr at Mount Sinai Baptist Church in Old Bight, and Pastor Russell at Tabernacle Ministry of God Outreach Ministry all welcomed us with open arms. On Monday, April 4 we distributed from two locations, the Media
Centre in Knowles and Mount Sinai Baptist Church in New Bight. The crowds came to partake in the hot meals, obtain their groceries, meat and clothing. The children came out in droves and were blessed with Easter bags, backpacks and school supplies,” said Eustacia. On Tuesday, April 5, they visited the island’s orphanage, where they also donated groceries and supplies. “In total, over 350 hot meals were served and 300 plus bags of groceries with 1,200lbs of meat were distributed. At each event we started and ended with prayer, words of love and encouragement over the residents of Cat Island,” said Eustacia. She said people in the Family Islands have been greatly affected by the global pandemic; they are hurting and in need of hope and love. This trip was the organisation’s way of bringing love to a community that may not often experience it. “We were overjoyed by the turnout. On each day, at each location, we met persons waiting in line to be blessed. There were adults and children that came from nearby communities. In less than two hours, we had given out all of the hot meals prepared and had to send for more.
The highlight of the trip was our visit to the orphanage. Along with taking supplies to the home, we sang, prayed and talked with the children. We took each child’s name and age to start our ‘Sponsor a Child’ programme in our organisation. Each member of LYHO will virtually adopt a child and send supplies, care packages and letters to them. We want this to be a long-term relationship and investment into the well-being and care of these children,” she said. Eustacia said they were “blown away at how receptive and grateful the residents were.” “Some of them went on camera to record ‘thank you’ messages and flooded our Facebook posts with thanks. It was a blessing to see the smiles and even tears of gratitude. We gave everything we had and left empty of goods but filled with love,” she said. She said the goal of the mission trip was also to show the love of God to the people of Cat Island and to remind them that they are seen, cared for and loved by not only God, but LYHO. They wanted to touch as many lives as possible and leave an imprint of God’s love on the island. LYHO holds weekly ‘Thankful Thursday’ prayer and praise services on Zoom at 5am and 6.30pm. Eustacia said they will continue to support their adopted homes in New Providence: the Mary Ingraham Senior Home and Coastline Community Centre. Another outreach trip is also being planned to a Family Island before the end of the year. “Our annual fun run/walk is being scheduled for October 2021 and we are hopeful it would be able to take place this year. We have started planning for our grand annual LYHO Retreat in Conference that will be held during Valentine’s weekend in 2022. If you are interested in joining our organisation or making donations to our efforts, please call 457-1495 or 557-1495,” said Eustacia.
