Tribute to my Goddie, Elva Russell-Rolle T

he rest of the Bahamas knew Elva RussellRolle as a woman with amazing talent for the public arena – well-spoken, accomplished, a pioneer for women in broadcasting, born to be in the spotlight. I knew her as “Goddie Elva.” In my formative years, she (and her family, by extension) would be the hallmark of family values like support, counsel and camaraderie for me. She was a friend par excellence to my mother and so much more to me. She was Goddie! I have two godmothers – both of whom hold a special place in my heart. Of course, there is Goddie Minna – beautiful, bright smile, always welcoming. Then...there was Elva. I’m not sure how our relationship developed over the years, but she was always a constant voice in my head, reminding me how talented and beautiful I was, even when the world around me didn’t treat me that way. She would often have a few choice words for anyone who acted unfairly, inconsistently, or unjustly toward me. I loved this woman who was always on my side. Goddie Elva taught me so many important things about life and family and friendship. It was through her friendship with my mom that I learned the important lesson: Women don’t have to compete with each other; they can simply celebrate each other’s strengths and support each other in weakness. Did they have the perfect relationship? I dare not say yes. But to me, it was. They both

AYANNA CLARKE were stern and opinionated, but fierce in their loyalty to each other. Their lives were oceans apart. Goddie Elva lived in the spotlight: dinners and parties and meetings, the works! But this never at one time diminished her welcome when we stopped by for a visit. Goddie taught me the values of presenting myself well and preparing for those opportunities in the way I carried myself. People describe me as poised, confident, articulate – much of this came from her. I remember sleeping over at her house and listening to the way she spoke – on the phone, at the kiln in the garage, sorting through Amway shipments…wherever. Then I would sneak off to some quiet corner and practice speaking in that same tone, rehearsing my words, so I could sound just like Goddie Elva. There was never a time that I knew her where she didn’t seem extremely busy. It was always

TRIBUTE TO MY GODDIE, ELVA RUSSELL-ROLLE some business or other that kept her buzzing, going, striving. I learned this from her – never settle for less than you are worthy of. She could have settled for broadcasting, or growing someone else’s company, but she didn’t. She explored so many means of building herself, teaching me along the way that it is not how you begin but how you live to ensure a great end that really matters. Have I made it seem that we didn’t have our differences? Let me assure you, that is not the case. If there was anyone who

ever held an opinion, it was Goddie Elva! I remember one time in particular; she had asked me a favour. I was to sing at a birthday celebration. I admitted that I couldn’t. At the time, as I was in studio recording my album. She looked me in my face quietly, with this look on her face that shouted her disappointment and displeasure. What happened after? Goddie got exactly what she wanted! I recorded my last song in the session and sped to the hall just in time to sing “To Dream the Impossible Dream” for my Goddie.

Oh, by the way, that was another great talent of hers – getting exactly what she wanted. I can only smile at the many times she got me to sing. “For me,” she would say. “Ayanna, do it for me.” Sadly, a chapter of my life closes in her passing. Goddie Elva was perhaps the purest resource in a Godmother – passionate, formidable in her loyalties and indomitable in her spirit. She was the first person, outside of my mother, to call me black and beautiful – like my grandmother, she would always remind me of a queen,

Reconciliation H

ave you ever lost touch with a friend and after many years you found each other again? This is often true with friends who live abroad and whose address may have changed. It can also be true of family members or relatives who “drop off the radar” for some time. There are also situations where after a heated argument, spouse, parents and children, siblings or close friends become estranged. The more time passes this distance can develop into a chasm, and differences become seemingly irreconcilable. In the story of the Prodigal Son, the son disappears with his portion of his inheritance, which he insists on receiving before the death of his father. He squanders it all and then decides to return out of sheer desperation. The older brother is furious when he sees the celebration and rudely challenges his father’s authority. The forgiving father declares with deep emotion: “But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.”(Luke 15:32 NIV). He does not harden his heart toward his wayward younger son or his disrespectful older son. This is how it is with our God. The divine heart breaks for us: Sin separates Sin divides Sin destroys With each rebellious act we move further away from nearness to God, slipping gradually into

MEDITATION REV ANGELA C BOSFIELD PALACIOUS

darkness. Initially, we may feel guilty, but we soon harden our own hearts, dulling our consciences and eliminating regret. If we have the time to come to our senses, or “catch ourselves”, as we say here in the Bahamas, we cause there to be a great celebration in heaven. This is what reconciliation, restoration, and resolution mean. It is the blessing of God’s grace to begin again. When there is true and lasting peace (not the empty controlling promises of an abuser), harmony is restored to the home. This is the miracle of transformation when the apology is sincere and the change permanent. There are several Scripture passages that speak about reconciliation and restoration: Joshua 5:9 (NIV) – Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.” Psalm 32:1-6: – Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the one whose sin the Lord does

not count against them and in whose spirit is no deceit. When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy on me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer. Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord.” And you forgave the guilt of my sin. Therefore, let all the faithful pray to you while you may be found; surely the rising of the mighty waters will not reach them. 2 Corinthians 5:1621: So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. We who have been welcomed by God, and continue to need restoration, understand only too well how “pigsty

situations” arise. Let us welcome others into the kingdom without judgement or condemnation, ushering them into the presence of God with prayers for salvation, and

allowing them to experience the joy and love of God’s divine and eternal embrace. • Rev Angela Palacious, a motivational

MEMBERS OF THE BAPTIST MEN’S DEPARTMENT.

Baptist Men’s Department executive team says farewell AS they closed out their tenure in office, the Rev Stephen Ferguson and his officers of the Baptist Men’s Department delivered the Seven Last Words of Jesus during a special service on Tuesday, April 5, at First Baptist Church. The service, which followed the awards appreciation service on Sunday, March 13th at Faith United Missionary Baptist Church, brought the four years of dedicated and committed service to an end for the team of men from various Baptist churches. Minister Brent Stubbs of Macedonia Baptist Church spoke on the topic “Father, forgive them” to start the night. He was followed by Minister Anthony Garrison from First Baptist Church on the topic of “Today, you will be with me in Paradise.” The other speakers in order of saying from Jesus on the night that he was

crucified were: Minister Patrick Sweeting from Faith United on “Woman behold Thy son,” Rev Derek Munroe from New Bethlehem on “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me,” Evangelist Walter Pratt on “I thirst,” Rev Samuel Lightbourne of Pentecostal Baptist Church on “It is finished” and Rev Ferguson on “Father, into thine hands I commend my spirit.” Rev Harrison Thompson of Faith United completed the minute address by each speaker with the topic “Was it in vain.” Rev Ferguson, who hails from Hillside Missionary Baptist Church, in his farewell address said when so many of their family and friends have passed from labour into reward, the God of grace and mercy is still in control. “Look where God has brought us from, God has brought us from a

mighty long way,” said Rev Thompson, as he thanked Rev Dr Llyod Smith, President of The Bahamas Baptist Convention, to Rev Dr Phillip McPhee, first vice president of the executive team of the Convention, the various pastors who tirelessly supported the men’s department and loaned their sanctuary for events; his pastor, Bishop Lockwood Deleveaux; and his dynamic team of officers for all their love, prayers, and support. “To our readers and supporters, may God continue to bless you. We cannot forget our generous donors who helped to ease our financial burdens and provided items to help our grocery giveaway, our back-to-school giveaway, and breakfast giveaway locally and in the family of islands,” he said. Rev Ferguson noted that the last four years were a remarkable venture.

REV STEPHEN FERGUSON “You all have given willingly to help us continue the work of the Lord,” he said. “My family in faith, thank you for your continuous support over the years whether through prayer, donations, acts of kindness and much more please know that it was

greatly appreciated from the bottom of my heart. “Our journey has come to an end, and it is only right that I congratulate my team and the Men’s Department for their commitment to changing the stigma in our homes, schools, jobs, churches, and communities.”

Rev Ferguson reminded the men that they are in this together. And they should not slack off on their riding now, but continue to walk in the footsteps of Jesus wherever they may go. “As the mantle is passed on, let us continue to work together in love and unity for the work of the Lord must go on,” he stressed. No successor has as yet been appointed by the Baptist Convention to replace Rev Ferguson, who took over from the Rev George Bodie. The Baptist Men's Department has one more function to perform and that is the joint Men's World Day of Prayer being organized by the Baptist World Alliance. The prayer service will take place on Saturday, April 23, from 8am to 11 am at Hillside Missionary Baptist Church. Breakfast will be served free of charge.

Standing in faith when those called to lead fall

Bahamians weigh in on global Hillsong scandal By JEFFARAH GIBSON Tribune Features Writer jgibson@tribunemedia.net

B

elievers around the world have been watching in shock as the megachurch Hillsong faces on its worst crises since its inception forty years ago. The Pentecostal juggernaut with a home base in Australia and churches in over 30 countries has come under a lot fire in recent years. But the

latest scandal threatens the downfall of the megachurch that has over 30 million streams on Spotify. Its founder, Brian Houston, has been forced to step down from his role as global senior pastor amid an internal investigation into allegations of misconduct towards two women. Two former European pastors are also accusing Houston and the church's general manager of sending threatening e-mails during a dispute over the

transfer of their church, cash and assets to Hillsong Australia. Christians all over the world who have been been impacted by the church are grappling with how to hold onto their own faith when those called to lead are falling short. According to Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN), Houston has apologised to church members in an e-mail sent one week after Hillsong’s global board announced his

resignation for inappropriate behaviour. In the e-mail obtained by the Australian news outlet Eternity News, Houston 67, apologised to church members and his wife Bobbie, with whom he co-founded the now global megachurch in 1983. Last week, Hillsong issued its first statement on the matter, saying the founder had "breached" the church's "Pastor's Code of Conduct"

following an investigation into harassment complaints from two women. The first incident occurred "approximately a decade ago,” according to the church, and "involved "inappropriate text messages from Pastor Brian to a member of staff, which subsequently resulted in the staff member resigning." Hillsong claimed that at the time of the incident Houston was "under the influence of sleeping

tablets, upon which he had developed a dependence." According to Hillsong's Global Board, the second complaint was received in 2019 when Houston entered a woman's hotel room after a Hillsong conference. “It was found that Pastor Brian became disoriented after a session at the Hillsong Conference, following the consumption of anti-anxiety medication beyond the prescribed dose, mixed with alcohol. This resulted in him knocking on the door of a hotel room that was not his, entering this room and spending time with

THE TRIBUNE the female occupant," the church said. "Although all parts of the complaint were unable to be sustained, important elements of the complaint were sustained and the conduct was of serious concern," the statement continued. In the apology e-mail sent this week by the pastor to Hillsong members, Houston details how he used alcohol to cope with “many years of constant pressure, opposition, challenges and attacks, accompanied by my personal turmoil over my father's evil." “Many people have asked – 'How do you continue to get up, cope, and keep going?’” In January, the pastor stepped down from all "ministry responsibilities" at the church while dealing with legal charges that he concealed his father's child sex offenses. The New South Wales Police Force accused Houston in August of 2021 of covering up information about an incident where his father allegedly abused a boy in the 1970s - a claim the pastor has denied. The pastor offered his sincere apology to his members who have all been affected by the chain of events happening in the megachurch that has spread its reach to Europe, the US and other parts of the world. In Los Angeles, A-List celebrities were seen attending Hillsong services included Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Chris Pratt, Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, Nick Jonas, Vanessa Hudgens and others. The prominent LA pastor, Carl Lentz, was fired by Houston for "leadership issues and breaches of trust, plus a recent revelation of moral failures” in 2020. Now, in his e-mail following his own stepping down, Houston wrote: “To every single wonderful person who has called Hillsong Church home, I have let you down so badly, and sorry will never be enough to express my sorrow. As hollow as it

CO-founder and former senior global pastor of the Hillsong megachurch Brian Houston.

“It’s so important for leaders to conduct themselves in a manner of integrity and honesty at all times, because if they don’t, it really has an effect on the way people view the church.” may sound, I believe I am the person and pastor you believed me to be. Imperfect and flawed, but genuinely passionate about God, people, calling, and life. I am determined that my mistakes will not define me.” This recent fallout has not only exposed errors in the ways of the pastor, but also sheds light on the flaws and imperfections of those who are called to lead. Though they are held to higher standards and expected to have a clean and pristine rap sheet,

many church leaders still struggle privately, and some publicly, with their failings. And when they fail, the flock they are called to watch over are sometimes impacted in their own faith. Some Christians shared their thoughts on the Hillsong matter with Tribune Religion: “It’s so important for leaders to conduct themselves in a manner of integrity and honesty at all times, because if they don’t, it really has an effect on the way people

She feels Houston has done the right thing in resigning from his position as leader. “I do not condone misconduct and pastors engaging in activities that they decry from their pulpits; however, I do understand they too are still only human and are prone to falling short just like the rest of us. As in the case of the Hillsong, his conduct is not right at all and while he can be forgiven as a Christian, maybe his time as a leader has expired,” he said. Fabian Stubbs said Christians ought to be solidified in their own personal relationships with God so that in the event a church leader does fall short, their faith can still stand tall. “It’s difficult when a pastor sins and it is brought out in the open. It makes you wonder whether they took their faith serious enough and it makes you question everything they preached from their pulpits. I have been at that place before, but God helped me when I struggled with my faith,” he said. “God is the source of my relationship and not a pastor. Just because a pastor did not get it right all the way does not mean that God’s word is flawed. His word is true. This relationship I have with God is true. So it does not matter what anyone

else does or does not do. I know that my relationship with God is real and strong.” Timothy Munroe added: “Only the Lord Jesus knows this man’s heart and whether or not he is truly repentant or not. If the Lord Jesus wants him to remain in a leadership position, he would remain in a leadership position and the Lord would provide. If not, the Lord Jesus will remove him and not provide or bless further leadership positions if it is not in line with His will. Hopefully he is seeking Jesus daily and asking for His will to be done in his life and not his own and accept it... to learn, grow and change to become who he is created to be. God is always working, always exposing, always teaching and wanting people to examine their hearts and faith.” Courtney Rolle said while it is true leaders are also flawed, they must be held accountable. “God always forgives true repentance and gives second chances. However, those in leadership need to be held accountable in God's sight and in the eyes of the law. What does God's holy word teach about those in leadership? It is not our opinions that count. We must adhere to the Word,” she said.

Akeem Gardiner has new gospel song ‘dictated by God’ By ALESHA CADET Tribune Features Reporter acadet@tribunemedia.net

harles Akeem Gardiner – the former reggae artist known as CJ Priest – is continuing to spread the gospel through music and has just released a new song which he says was dictated to him by God. Akeem has shared the stage with artists like Tarrus Riley, Beres Hammond, the Bahamas’ very own Sammi Starr and many others, but now Akeem has dedicated his life to the Almighty God. He told Tribune Religion about one of his newest projects, the single “You Reign”. “I started singing from the age of four, singing in church. Over the course of my life, I’ve learned to play about seven instruments. It was in 2019 I transitioned to gospel music under my own name Akeem Gardiner,” he said. Akeem’s past projects include songs such as “No One Like You”, “Pick

Me” (featuring Sammi Starr and Sketch Carey), “Gypsy”, “Movin’” (featuring his father Bishop Charles Gardiner), and “I Believe In You”. His latest song, “You Reign”, he said, came to him during a time of meditation and prayer. After asking God during prayer what He would love to hear from Akeem, the inspiration then came through His spirit, the singer said. He said the lyrics were literally dictated to him by God. “The name of the song came from a basic proclamation – God, you reign; as simple as that. No matter if things are going good or bad, up or down, happy or sad, God, you reign,” he said.

Akeem said the feedback on the track has been amazing. “Everyone who heard it said that they love the song and it blessed them. I thank God that the song is doing exactly what the Lord intended for it to do,” he said. While there is currently no music video, Akeem one is in the works and will released very soon. “I hope to soon release my debut album and to give the thing that God has given to me to the world, and to the body of Christ through song,” he said. Akeem’s music is available on digital platforms like Apple Music, Amazon, Tidal and Spotify. The singer is encouraging people to remember why they do what they do, and to remember that whatever is done in this life is not only for them. Whether they know it or not, they are a blessing to someone. “So, if you don't even feel like giving it 100 percent today, remember if you can give 80 percent, that's all you need, because little is much, once God is in it,” said Akeem.
