PM signals long road ahead as lockdown ends
PRIME Minister Dr Hubert Minnis said the country is making progress against COVID-19 and that the physical distancing measures he implemented are working. However, he said, it is not clear how long the strict emergency orders will need to remain in place. He also announced during a press conference yesterday that the Ministry of Health will expand testing for COVID-19 this week, which could result in a sharp increase in cases as people with mild manifestations of the disease are incorporated into the
statistic. His comments came after a quiet fiveday lockdown in which the number of new coronavirus cases and deaths grew more slowly than expected. Health officials, using an exponential regression analysis model, had projected 90 cases by Easter Sunday but up to yesterday there were only 49 confirmed cases in the country. Even while hitting occasional notes of optimism after weeks of upheaval, Dr Minnis , pictured, warned the future is uncertain. “It is unclear how long this restricted period will last,” he said. “The COVID-19 virus and how we respond will determine a number of timelines.” SEE PAGE THREE

DOCTORS’ CONTACT MOODY’S - WE SEE GROWTH NEXT YEAR CONCERN ALL quiet on Bay Street yesterday
By NEIL HARTNELL Tribune Business Editor nhartnell@tribunemedia.net
DEPUTY prime minister Peter Turnquest yesterday warned “there is no restart button” for fully relaunching a Bahamian economy that Moody’s is projecting will grow by 2 percent next year. He said that the eventual post-COVID 19 reopening of the economy would have to occur via a “very well thought-out, detailed process” to guard against the possibility that the virus could re-ignite.

He acknowledged that the government will “have to add some fuel to the fire to ensure the engine goes”, although he declined to provide a figure for how much financial support it will have to provide to help jump-start both the private sector and consumer demand once the COVID-19 threat has passed. Mr Turnquest spoke after Moody’s, in a “credit opinion” that accompanied its decision to place The Bahamas “under review” for potential downgrade
to so-called “junk” status, forecast this nation would recover some of its lost growth in 2021 - provided both it and the US bring the virus under control within the next 10-12 weeks. “We forecast The Bahamas to register an 8 percent contraction in economic activity in 2020, followed by 2 percent growth in 2021,” the rating agency said. “The main assumptions underpinning our forecasts are at least a 35 percent annual reduction in tourism flows.

ATLANTIS REOPENING? I HAVEN’T A CLUE By NEIL HARTNELL Tribune Business Editor nhartnell@tribunemedia.net
ATLANTIS’ top executive has warned thousands of furloughed staff members that COVID-19’s uncertainties make it almost impossible “to predict” when the mega resort will re-open. Audrey Oswell, the Paradise Island property’s president and managing director, told employees in a video message that “no one
THE ATLANTIS mega resort has all the answers” or can accurately forecast when the pandemic will end.
Indicating that the resort will likely be closed beyond the May 15 date previously announced, Ms Oswell also told the workforce to be prepared “to navigate changes” involving the implementation of rigorous health and sanitation measures in the run-up to the eventual re-opening. The video also informed staff they should receive the first relief payments by this week at the latest. FULL STORY - SEE BUSINESS
