Atlantis ‘Art Walk’ celebrates first anniversary

O

ne of several initiatives undertaken by Atlantis, Paradise Island to bring the culture and vibrancy of the Bahamas to its guests, Art Walk at Marina Village, celebrated its first year anniversary recently with many of its local artisans and musicians hailing it a success.

The bi-monthly event – held on the second and fourth Saturday of every month – in addition to showcasing Bahamian talent, fosters economic opportunities for Bahamian entrepreneurs.

Atlantis Senior Vice President for Retail and Public Affairs, and the man behind the event, Ed Fields, expressed his delight at what he feels is a goal accomplished.

“When Art Walk was conceptualised, we not only wanted to give our guests a real feeling and memorable experience for what we as Bahamians know is truly unique and wonderful about the Bahamas, but we also saw - and jumped at - an opportunity to provide an economic avenue and wider exposure to some of our local entrepreneurs – and as far as I am concerned, it’s working,” he said.

Cultural advocate and gallerist Pam Burnside agreed.

The widow of the late Jackson Burnside – noted Bahamian architect and painter who is credited with designing Marina Village – she called the event an “enlightening experience.”

“To see Bahamians here supporting their fellow Bahamians, whether they are buying pieces of art or the handmade jewellery or pottery pieces, or eating at the Bahamian-owned restaurants,

shows just how necessary Art Walk is. It has been an enlightening experience,” she said.

For the vendors participating in Art Walk, the event has given them access to a wider audience.

“Art Walk has taken my business to another level. It’s been a godsend and has given me the opportunity to parlay into international shipping,” said Lorette Evans of Sasha’s Foxy Paws, which offers pet clothing and accessories created with Androsia and Batik print fabric.

Nouveaux Art’s Don Adderley, who creates jewellery and fashion pendants from recycled glass, said feedback from his customers has served as a positive marketing aid. “We use recycled glass from things that are so easily left as litter like beer and wine bottles, broken glass…The visitors really like that aspect of what we do and so it’s like a piece of lost and then found treasure they get to take home,” he said.

Astrid Pinder’s Fine Ocean Jewellery features earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings and anklets made with real sea glass, pieces of conch shell, shells from wilks and nickelfree wire wrapping. Art Walk at Marina Village, she said, is one of her favourite venues.

“It’s been a great experience. I do this full time and because I’m a pop-up business, I show in a lot of different places. This is definitely one of my favourites. And the time – from 2pm to 10pm… I’ve found that the evening hours work best for my business.

The tourists staying at Atlantis, and even locals,who come to Marina Village for dinner, are able to walk through and see what’s available,” she said.

interview After listening to the cries from all sectors of society for an end to corruption in government, IT expert Reneldo Russell tells Felicity Ingraham he has developed a plan which would establish full transparency and make sure every cent in the public purse is accounted for.

R

eneldo Russell is an information technology professional who has created a comprehensive 33-page document called “Silicon Country – A Better Bahamas Through Technology”. It addresses the many ways in which the Bahamas could benefit from technology implemented correctly. The document covers a wide range of topics, including health, National Insurance, the Road Traffic Department, e-voting, land registry, tax and fraud.

“I have a passion for technology, but I have even more of a passion for ensuring that life for the general population is more efficient, and technology is obviously the easiest way for that to occur,” he told Tribune Weekend.

If considered for implementation, he said, not only would his plan cause the country to benefit from an efficient Treasury that secures all of the money the government collects, but it stands to create an easier way to do business.

This is important, especially in light of the fact that most people complain of the inefficiency of government offices in terms of customer service, so much so that it’s often joked about.

Leading up to the 2017 elections, Reneldo carefully reviewed the manifestos of the Free National Movement (FNM), the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) and the Democratic National Alliance (DNA) with his ideas related to technology in mind.

“I decided to reach out to both the FNM and the PLP to discuss deficiencies in each (of their manifestos) related to technology and how the use of technology can advance the country,” he said.

“After meeting with a now Cabinet minister, I was asked to provide a paper of the suggestions I had made during the meeting. After conducting research and beginning the paper, I did not really feel that what I was to write would be read or implemented, so I abandoned the project.”

The day before the election, Reneldo was reading The Tribune when he saw a letter which was signed “a 16-year-old Bahamian”. He was so inspired by the letter that he made it a point to finish his research and produce his paper; he even contacted the teenager, who is now 18 and in the 12th grade, to encourage her and tell her that there are people out there who heard her cry for a better Bahamas. He said he would continue his paper for young people just like her.

Her letter to The Tribune said in part: “I have recently taken up an interest in political science and was excited for this electoral season. For a Bahamas that wants so much better for our future generations, our people have fallen under a spell of not being in a position to have better. So, our way of campaigning for elections and getting the people ready to vote in the Bahamas is to leave them to get drunk and/or give them money to get drunk on liquor, cigarettes and dancing? These people who are promising to bring a better Bahamas, change the country or give the people their time plan on doing so by giving us a free taste of their luxurious lives and slowly breaking down our bodies and our willpower? My generation of youth is struggling, We are struggling because even now, we have to begin to decide whether we will continue to live in

our home country or live abroad. We have been exposed to what the Bahamas could be but fails to be because our elders have given up on the possibilities of brighter days.”

This struck a chord with Reneldo, who then renewed his task to get the powers that be to take note of his “Silicon Country” plan and the myriad of the suggestions it holds for a better Bahamas. The document was presented to several current Cabinet members in May 2017, and was made public in July 2017. His desire is for this interview to serve as a reminder to the government that he has a plan, and there are others out there like him with plans that deserve serious consideration.

“As world powers and world organisations constantly try to cripple smaller nations with unrealistic demands that constantly change, accurate, relevant, reliable and timely information must be available for those in power to make state-level decisions that are in their country’s best interest and to defend the decisions that are to be made,” he said.

“These suggestions provide a way to accumulate such information for decision-makers, while simultaneously enabling the provision of better services for the citizenry. the Bahamas must rebuild and re-brand.”

“Silicon Country” takes a look at the successful implementation of e-governance in countries like Estonia and provides examples of that country’s systems in e-school, e-prescription, e-court, e-tax, e-police, e-business, electronic health records, and e-voting.

He advises that information technology should be removed from each ministry individually and a system created to envelop all ministries. For each state-level agency, he suggests, a certified IT professional and a certified public accountant (CPA) would have to be appointed to the board of directors.

He also suggests that a review of the Ministry of Finance must occur and a “robust, open, flexible financial application must be installed”. A secure medium must be created for communication between government agencies, he added, and internet (broadband) access must become a utility, reaching every part of the Bahamas, with Bahamians engaged throughout the exercise with a focus on training and continuous improvement.

“I want to make all Bahamians aware of what is actually possible, aware of what is occurring in countries much younger than the Bahamas.”

Care Block while at the Public Hospital’s Authority, and he also served as the manager of IT for an online portal for registrants while at the Securities Commission.

“These experiences have given me great insight into the challenges we faced with information gathering in general and what needs to be done on a national level with how data needs to be captured, stored, dispersed and ultimately massaged into useful and manageable information,” he said.

An initial brainstorming session led him to research India and the Aadhaar – India’s biometric identification programme – noting that in order to achieve success in providing service each of its citizens, everyone has to be able to be positively identified, anywhere, anytime.

“Coincidentally, I have had the luxury for the past few months of sitting directly next to and working alongside one of the most sought-after security experts in the world – Raido Rattameister,” Reneldo shared.

“Initially, I paid no attention to the ID card sticking out of his laptop or how often he would use the card while at his computer. Raido is from Estonia, and the only reason I knew anything about the country was the fact that Shaunae Miller-Uibo, our Olympic gold medallist, married someone from there. I have since watched as Raido has accessed the Estonian citizen’s portal, search his health information, view his children’s progress in school,

and view how WHO (the World Health Organisation) has had access or gained access to his information. Raido has also demonstrated what he would need to do to vote (in Estonia) from his desk in the Bahamas.”

Reneldo is keen on “not just throwing technology at something”, but instead creating a strategic approach to implementing the technology, and he has put a lot of time and effort into

creating “Silicon Country” as a blueprint for doing so.

“You cannot bribe the computer with new technology,” he said. “It is extremely difficult to alter transactions or cover your tracks. I want to make all Bahamians aware of what is actually possible, aware of what is occurring in countries much younger than the Bahamas. Devoid of political rhetoric, I want Bahamians to demand better; actually, I want them to demand the best.”

Beauties attend boot camp Miss Bahamas contestants prepare for finale

W

inning the Miss World Bahamas title and wearing the coveted crown is viewed as reaching the pinnacle of success by beauty pageant contestants country-wide. And next month, on May 27, a new Miss World Bahamas will be named to represent her country in the global quest to find Miss World, a heady international title.

But first there’s boot camp for the 11 contestants. The beauty pageant boot camp is an important and necessary component of the process in the selection of a Bahamian representative, and over the recent Easter period, Sandyport Beach Resort in Nassau served as the picturesque arena for training, photography and video shoots.

“Sandyport Beach Resort proved to be the perfect place for us,” said Jerome Sawyer, Miss Bahamas Organisation vice president and public relations director. “We always need to have a stand-out backdrop for our video and photography shoots to deliver

a wow factor to the TV audience. Which is why a visually stunning location is so important – the Sandyport Beach Resort provides that. The MoVi film crew were really spoilt for choice as far as the different backdrops to stage the swim and evening wear shoots.”

Held over the four-day Easter weekend, the only time all the contestants could be together, each day began at 7.30am in the resort’s Starfish Room and adhered to a fivepage itinerary ending 14 hours later.

“The two days of classroom theory on life situation management and the skill sets required during the lead-up to the finale, and beyond of course, for the ultimate winner going forward into the international event,” said Mr Sawyer.

“The last two days are dedicated to the actual photo and video shoots and the taping of the first episodes of ‘Road to The Crown’, the Cable 12 TV reality show leading up to the Miss World Bahamas televised finale on May 27.”

Vernon Moss, Sandyport Beach Resort general manager, expressed his admiration for the Miss Bahamas Organisation, saying their presence was a pleasure and more than welcome.

“We were full over Easter and we had compliments from many of our guests as the contestants went about their photo and TV shoots. I am proud to be able to say we have this collaboration with Miss Bahamas, it’s a big thing and we are pleased to be a part of it.”

Rediscovering the bounties of the sea

3 Tides Fish House has grand opening

I

am one of those people who say without reservation that I hate sushi. I never go with my friends when they shout, “Let’s go for sushi!” I never even hang around, although I know that there may be a friendly spring roll or some veggie fried rice on the menu. So my friends should all be glad to know that I will be asking them to get together at 3 Tides Fish House at Baha Mar some time in the near future. I was excited when I was invited to the grand opening of the restaurant last week. I am a pescatarian some times of the year and a vegan others. But when I am into fish, I am all into it.

The blackened snapper was excellent. I just love a crispy, seasoned crust and warm fish inside. It was served with bob chop and a cucumber slaw that set it off perfectly. As I browsed around the new, well laid-out restaurant with food prep going on right before your eyes, I

passed straight by the sushi bar more than once. I am allergic to shellfish, so the sight of the prawns, mollusks, lobster, crabs and other sea creatures laid out in the ice had no appeal for me. There was, however, a long line of guests there who later on told me how fresh the seafood is.

But there, just past the prawns and all, were rolls upon rolls of sushi. Eventually, a very nice sous chef convinced me to at least try the tuna, even if I

refused to try every sushi roll he offered me. Raw tuna isn’t my thing unless it’s from the local breakfast stand with some grits. Honestly, I left it for last on my plate. I am now more than happy I tried it! The tuna was so well marinated and was topped with this delicious seaweed that was altogether so tasty I said to the chef, “You’ve got a convert!”

There are lots of other reasons I will be back at 3 Tides soon. As a salad lover,

the menu has lots of options, including the ‘Island Grown’ salad featuring local produce. I am told the lobster cake was “the bomb”, and a lady at the opening said the octopus salad was good because it wasn’t rubbery like so many octopus dishes she had tried before.

“I would love for Bahamian fishermen to supply as many of the hotels and restaurants as possible with their product.

But you have to get up, go out and make it consistent, reliable, and you have to deliver a consistent quality product at a reasonable price.”

Tides Scott Allen was excited to share that there’s an affordable all-you-can-eat option for $50, while the Bahamas’s Food and Beverage Director Danny Wells was proud to state that there is something for everyone on the menu.

Mr Allen boasts of his sushi chef, Jerry Warner, who was voted “Best Sushi Chef in North America” a few years back. Chef Warner, who has experience in Japan as well, used to work under Mr Allen at LaHoya in Southern California. Mr Allen thought it most necessary to bring one of the world’s best sushi chefs to serve at 3 Tides.

“The idea is to really make the food just so good that you are smiling and having a wonderful experience,” he said.

“A lot of restaurants in Baha Mar have a uniqueness to them, and that’s what we brought to 3 Tides. This is a place where locals and tourists can talk about the sea, what we can provide and what we can enjoy together. It could be a fish sandwich, a fish taco, a bullion base, but it’s that smile when you taste the food that we are looking for.”

Grill plates include a Caribbean lobster tail with herb-drawn butter, a bone-in rib eye with a housemade espresso barbecue sauce, a surf n’ turf with a 14oz New York strip with truffle demi-glace, and a swordfish or ahi tuna with charred lemon. Lots of sharable desserts, sushi and sashimi, and small and large plates are also on the menu. Diners can choose their meals from three stations – hot, cold and interactive desserts – while enjoying the restaurant’s Old World-inspired décor.

Popular reggae band Willis & the Illest performed at the grand opening, supported by 3 Tides dancers and models for the occasion. Artwork produced by Bahamian master artists John Beadle, Jackson Burnside and Stan Burnside graces the

walls throughout the space, allowing for a colourful and airy atmosphere.

The restaurant’s back-end includes a fish room where all the staff does is butcher fish, Mr Allen revealed, with their local catches being utilised within 24 hours.

The fish house creates a natural opportunity for more entrepreneurs in fishing in the Bahamas, according to Minister of Tourism Dionisio D’Aguilar.

“Since I came to office I have been imploring Bahamian entrepreneurs to connect to our number one industry,” he said. “We have to create that link between

the hospitality sector and domestic industries.

“I would love for Bahamian fishermen to supply as many of the hotels and restaurants as possible with their product. But you have to get up, go out and make it consistent, reliable, and you have to deliver a consistent quality product at a reasonable price. But the business is here...the time has come for us to take advantage of this.”

A colourful indulgence Xtasy takes revellers to the Garden of Eden and on ‘di road’

nown as “the band with the most vibes”, Xtasy is all set and ready to hit the road this May under the theme “Hedonism”.

Hedonism is generally defined as the pursuit of pleasure, and representatives of the Carnival group said revellers can definitely expect pleasure and more – lots of colour and energy.

“Over the past four to five months the organisation has been preparing for

Bahamas Carnival and marketing itself from as far as Toronto in the north, Trinidad in the south, and all jurisdictions in between where Carnival festivals are held,” said Calvin Balfour, the group’s founder.

“Hedonism” costumes include subthemes such as: “Xtasy”, colourful pieces to portray the energy and vibe that exists among the masqueraders; “Lust”, a section that includes shades of purple, green and silver; “Indulgence”, a selection to show freedom and confidence, and “Seduction”, a taste of the days of Adam by Eve in the Garden of Eden.

“This is going to be a very orderly presentation with super security, lots of premier drinks, great entertainment and super vibes on the road. I wish to invite all of the undecided to visit the www.xtasy.band website and register now to be a part of the great road experience as a number costumes in various sections are already sold out,” said Mr Balfour.

Xtasy is one of the Bahamas’ leading allinclusive Carnival bands. This means the fees paid by a patron to be a part of the

band includes a breakfast, snack on the road during the parade, unlimited drinks throughout the day, a meal at the end of the parade, and of course the costume. Entertainment throughout the day is provided by some of the Bahamas’ most popular young performers, international recording artists, top local radio deejays, along with very popular international deejays from Canada, the United States and Trinidad.”

Even with some hiccups regarding sponsorship this year, the show must go on, said Mr Balfour. And Xtasy is honouring its commitment to visitors who are travelling to the Bahamas to be a part of the Carnival experience.

The group, however, is also still seeking additional financial support.

he husband and wife soca duo of Bunji Garlin and FayAnn Lyons brought their special brand of energy and entertainment to Pompey Square last weekend for ‘Mask Fete’.

Presented by KO Productions and Presidente, the event attracted scores of soca enthusiasts who were looking to enjoy a fun-filled night with performances by Trinidadian soca stars.

“The turnout for the Mask Fete was massive. K O Productions and Presidente definitely raised the bar on how a fete should really be leading up to Carnival. The entire block was booked out from 7pm until 2am. It truly was a sight to see,” said Jayde Knowles of K O Productions.

For their high-energy performance, Bunji Garlin and Fay-Ann Lyons entered from the back stage to the main stage shortly after 1am to loud cheers from the crowd. Once on stage, they went straight into performing their popular songs like “Stink and Dutty”, “Big Bad Soca”, “Truck D Road”, “Girls” and “Hands in the Air”.

“They performed for about an hour taking turns with their individual hits and then some performing together.

Their energy alone on the stage had the entire fete up in a roar,” said Ms Knowles. “The crowd went crazy once they heard Bunji Garlin’s voice on the mic. The duo had the crowd enthusiastic and engaged during their performance.

Prizes were given out for the most creative Carnival masks.

“Bahamians are anxious and craving the eventful Carnival weekend more than ever.

After getting just a taste from one of the soca kings, Bunji Garlin, and three-time Carnival Road March queen Fay-Ann Lyons, the anticipation is unreal.”

The added factor was that they themselves were excited to be on stage in the Bahamas and it kept the crowd hype and wanting more. Most of the pair’s songs received good responses, as patrons waved their rags, flags and hands to show their appreciation.”

Based on the event’s turnout, Ms Knowles said Bahamians are more than ready for Carnival weekend, scheduled to be held in just a matter of weeks.

“Bahamians are anxious and craving the eventful Carnival weekend more than ever. After getting just a taste from one of the soca kings, Bunji Garlin, and three-time Carnival Road March queen Fay-Ann Lyons, the anticipation is unreal. The movie has already been set, and trust me, the Mask Fete was definitely a movie,” she said.

There was also a mask competition this time around that offered the most creative mask wearer $500 in cash.

And patrons did not disappoint as they came out with an array of colourful and inventive Carnival masks.

“One of the Carnival groups, Fetish, also presented some of their best costumes for the 2018 Carnival Road March to the stage and allowed partygoers to sign up on the same night.

Not to mention, some of Nassau’s hottest deejays that really had the crowd on another level of hype from start to finish. I’ve never seen anything like it,” she said.

Courtroom drama promotes acceptance

College Auditorium.

give audiences a taste of just how judgmental society can be.

“We are steadily growing towards acceptance and equality, but we have a long way to go as a society. This play was birthed out of a need to speak to such issues. Also, this play enlightens the viewers on the fact that everyone has their own lives to live, and it also speaks to God being the ultimate judge,” said Jeriel Nathaniel Gould of JNG Productions.

“We have no right to judge our brothers and sisters, especially in a condemnatory way because we all have sinned and fallen short. Our society would be much stronger if we had support for one another.”

He describes “Da People Dem Court” as a highly energetic, witty and comedic play that will have the audience holding their stomachs in laughter.

The plot touches on issues regarding BPL, gambling, dating, marriage and more. This will all take place in a courtroom setting that quickly turns into a scene of utter chaos.

“I am always inspired by current events and prevalent issues relative to our Bahamian society. My imaginative juices are always flowing; whether I am at a local eatery, which was the inspiration behind my 2012 play called ‘Da Shack’, or I am watching the House of Assembly debates or listening to a local talk show, I am inspired by Bahamian culture. I am primarily, though, driven by my relationship with God. He has blessed me with the gift and natural ability to just sit and write, and It flows naturally,” said Mr Gould.

When it comes to writing plays, Mr Gould believes God uses him to impart positive messages that will motivate the minds and hearts of audience members, inspiring them to live the best life they possibly can while; a life of growth, productivity, change, and one that leads to a personal relationship with the Lord.

“It is amazing how a stage play can yield such results. I would also like recognise Bishop Neil Ellis, as it was out of a meeting with him where the original thought to produce a courtroom drama was sparked. I would also like to give tribute to my mother Kaynell Gould, who was a major inspiration and continues to be a major support in the company where I have the ability to touch thousands in a way that many won’t be able to,” he said.

For Mr Gould, being able to cause laughter, joy and excitement in people, giving them an avenue of escape from the pressures of everyday life, gives him a sense of fulfilment.

“Also, the ability to spread the love of Christ and provide hope that no matter who you are, where you came from or what you have done, we are still loved by God, and that we can be used by Him makes me feel accomplished,” he said.

The nine main cast members for this weekend’s play are Taimak Saunders, Shakara Greene, Kia S Cartwright, Xavier Knowles, Tonya Major, Miguel Murphy, Sabria Moree and Edline Nicolas. Mr Gould is the writer, producer, director, and plays the role of the judge.

“Every experience preparing for a production is a rewarding one for me. I have long become aware of the fact that this is my life’s purpose and assignment.

I am the most fulfilled when preparing for a production. My rehearsals bring life to me and all involved. It also brings its share of challenges. Funding remains one at the forefront of my mind as the arts are slowly gaining support in our society. However, as with any vision, purpose or goal, you have to remain focused, chart the course and keep moving despite the obstacles,” said Mr Gould.

JNG Productions team members are looking forward to producing three major shows this year, including “Hope”, a high-energy musical, “At Da Funeral” and “Jingle Bell Jitney” during the Christmas season.

Eclectic expressions

r Sophia Rolle wears many hats; she’s an educator, author, consultant and a Justice of the Peace. But it is her artistic identity which will shine the brightest tomorrow night.

Beginning at 5.30pm, Ms Rolle will present “Eclectic”, a solo original art and craft show at the Dundas Centre for Performing Arts. The show will also continue tomorrow from 12noon to 4 pm and on Sunday from 12noon to 3pm.

In preparing for this show, Sophia was being helped by her sister, Theresa Moxey-Ingraham, until the untimely death of the former Cabinet minister, senator and parliamentarian on March 20.

“Having begun painting just over two years ago, I have become an astute student of the arts, exploring several different techniques, seeking to discover which of the expressions I am most drawn to. I consider myself a non-traditionalist and I am decidedly trying to stay away from the popular genres and landscapes that lots of the other artists seems to be drawn to,” Sophia told Tribune Weekend.

At the upcoming art show, Sophia said people will notice that she is exploring abstracts and fluid art. For her, it’s a joy to practice the eclectic nature of fluid art, as no two pieces will ever be the same.

“I like that, hence the name of my second show My first show was held in December of 2016. For a new artist, by all accounts, the first show was a success, and most importantly, my original works are now hanging in my friends’ homes and businesses,” she said.

The 50 on display for “Eclectic” represent various forms of artistic expressions,. There will be a mixture

of abstracts, mixed media pieces, fluid art, traditional landscapes, ceramic, and more.

“I will also have some craft pieces that I have painted or created; pieces like coasters made from ceramic tile, handbags made from my earlier paintings, greeting cards using my paintings and my daughter’s poetry on the inside. I will also have a few of my hat boxes on display and a new feature of my work that I am working on now – a wine rack made from one of my hat boxes,” said Sophia.

“I simply want my friends, family and the wider public to enjoy what I have been working on for the last year and a half. I hope that they would want to have an ‘original Sophia’ as part of their art collection.”

Sophia is confident in the beauty of her latest works and hopes that consummate art lovers will appreciate her artistic expression. “ ‘Eclectic’ is the antithesis of her first show in 2016 under the theme ‘Expressions of the Brush’,” she said. “I wish to thank you, my friends and the Bahamian community for embracing me, supporting my new-found passion, and off course purchasing my work. I fully intend to continue to explore different genres of art. As a life-long learner, I would like to spend this summer honing my skills and perhaps enrolling in a few master art classes abroad.”

More importantly, said Sophia, part proceeds from the sale of her work will go to begin an endowed scholarship in her late sister’s name. “(Theresa) loved all forms of the arts, and in fact, was helping me with this latest show before her untimely death. She would want audiences to enjoy the works and to support an upcoming talented young person in one of the fields that she was most passionate about. So the scholarship eventually will fund a student who is studying hospitality, tourism, education, political science or any one of the arts such as performing, dramatic and visual,” said Sophia.

How does someone like Nicole, who is considered a style icon, even have something like this in her closet? The severely slicked-back hair doesn’t help either.”

Felicity says: “Umm....who did Nicole borrow this dress from? Are you trying to honour your grandma, who told you to wear it once for her because it was ‘chic’ in her day? Or did you visit an old Victorian home and swipe the curtains? By the way, the clutch is nice!”

Karin says: “E J, Magic Johnson’s son, has displayed some downright awful fashion sense in the past, so this jumpsuit is positively tame. I support his right to express himself, but this is still not very flattering. It looks like a hand-me-down from 1970s’ Cher.”

Felicity says: “This all-in-one sexy body suit would have looked way better without the white tassels and the dead animal on the one arm. You would have had to jazz it up with some bling or something, but this? No. And those shoes...so plain!”

The Rock survives the rubble that is ‘Rampage’ RAMPAGE RUNNING TIME: 107 MINS

sually paired with smaller companions like Kevin Hart or Moana, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is for once the diminutive one in “Rampage,” a hopelessly bland and bizarrely self-serious monster movie.

Johnson plays primatologist Davis Okoye in Brad Petyon’s adaption of a classic 1986 arcade game. Naturally, Okoye has some covert military history but — like so many highly trained international commandos — he’s now working at the San Diego Zoo. His time is especially focused on a hulking albino gorilla named George. They are pals, Davis and George, who fist-bump and play pranks on one another.

The two are actually a winning pair, but “Rampage,” unfortunately,

The objective of the original 8-bit video game was to, while controlling one of three giant monsters (a gorilla, dinosaur or werewolf), reduce a city to rubble. Naturally, a story of such pathos and originality brought Hollywood rushing with a check for millions.

What the film’s writers — Ryan Engle, Carlton Cuse, Ryan J Condal, Adam Sztykiel — have come up with from this skeletal concept is something overly elaborate and curiously humourless. The film opens ominously in space, where a genetic experiment has created a giant mutated rat that chews up the

isn’t the Rock-and-monkey buddy comedy we might crave. “Rampage” is professional-looking, thanks to the well-integrated effects artistry of Weta Digital. We have become spoiled, perhaps, by affecting computer-generated primates thanks to the “Planet of the Apes” franchise. But George (played with motion capture by Jason Liles) still holds his own in the monkey-movie kingdom.

And Johnson, so recently in the jungle for “Jumanji,” remains a truly indefatigable movie star capable of carrying even the most half-baked of premises with colossal charisma.

“Rampage” would surely sink a less sturdy action star, yet even here the

space station’s crew, but not before an escape pod with three samples shoots back to Earth.

The canisters of serum land alongside an alligator in the Florida Everglades, a wolf in Wyoming and at George’s habitat in San Diego. Each quickly swells massively while simultaneously becoming increasingly aggressive.

As a product that reunites the director and star of “San Andreas” and “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island,” ‘‘Rampage” is similarly forgettable popcorn fare that, in almost every scene feels like a knockoff of something else.

NEW YORK (AP) — If Pablo Picasso had a blue period and the Beatles went through a psychedelic phase, then Chiwetel Ejiofor is currently going through his religious period.

The Oscar-nominated star of “12 Years a Slave” has gone from playing Peter the apostle in the upcoming biblical drama “Mary Magdalene” to playing a contemporary Pentecostal pastor in the midst of a religious crisis in the Netflix drama “Come Sunday.”

Could this be pure coincidence?

“Who knows? Perhaps,” the British actor says, laughing. “Certainly I have been having to engage very, very heavily with faith and religion and Christian faith, specifically.”

In “Come Sunday,” Ejiofor explores the fall from grace of renowned Oklahoma evangelical Carlton Pearson, who comes to believe that there is no such thing as hell. The implications are shuddering for that branch of faith: Without hell, everyone is saved, regardless of belief or behaviour. There’s no need to go to church at all.

Viewers watch the anguish that Pearson endure, caught between church doctrine and his own beliefs.

is forced to downsize his life. Ejiofor compares Pearson’s journey to that of a Shakespearean tragedy and commends the preacher for “a very certain, very specific kind of bravery.”

“It was just a very powerful push and pull, a very powerful sort of torment,” he says. “That was what the story represented to me — a man finding out how to think differently.”

The final film is melancholy and moody, often capturing the actors in stillness and deep reflection. It’s an adult movie about big ideas that’s not interested in pandering or ridiculing religious audiences.

A poetic exploration of pain and pleasure “When you write you open up your mind and your heart, and not allowing that feeling to be trapped on the inside and keep you in bondage.”

wo contrasting events in her life – a time of sadness and an occasion for elation – inspired budding Bahamian author Ericka Denise Pierre to write her newest book.

With “The Pain of Pleasure”, a collection of poems, she was wants to show readers her unique perspective on life and encourage them to find light in darkness.

“Two major events in my life inspired me to create a book of all my poems written over the years,” Ericka told Tribune Weekend.

“The first was a death of a staff member, the late Dominique Bullard. We as the management team created a tribute board in her honour and I wrote a poem dedicated to Dominique. The poem was read and appreciated by many, mainly the Breakwater Staff. They valued it and it kept motivating me to write a book.

“The other was when I had the opportunity to perform in front of the Prime Minister in 2016 at St Mark’s Baptist Church. My local church was preparing for the annual Fox Hill Day celebration, and as always, I wanted to recite a poem. The focus of the poem was around freedom and I could not find any poem that expressed how I felt and how I wanted others to feel when it was read.

So it was then I decided to write my own, and I did just that. It was titled ‘Pathway to Freedom’. I was also inspired by my cousin, Tiny, my mom Fredericka, my best friend Leroy, my brother Andre and my daughter Eureka.”

After reciting her poem written to honour the life of her late colleague, Ericka said those who heard it were left encouraged. Ultimately, she hopes her book will do the same for those who read it.

“I want my readers to be encouraged no matter what experience they are going through in life. If they feel like they are alone and there is no way out, I encourage them to read my poems and be

encouraged. Remember, someone has gone through it already and they came out on top,” she said.

The three most encouraging poems, according to the writer, are: “Freedom”, which shows readers a way to be free from pain and guilt; “Hurt”, which urges people not to be trapped by pain – “they are to arise and be free” – and “Deep Lost”, which addresses the difficult topic of miscarriage.

“It was then when I wrote about it that I was able to overcome this painful loss. I encourage everyone to write. When you write you open up your mind and your heart, and not allowing that feeling to be trapped on the inside and keep you in bondage,” she said.

Ericka has been writing short stories, plays and poetry for some time now. “My short stories are inspired by my daughter

Eureka, as I read story books to her when she was a child. It was then that I made up my mind to write my very own children’s story book. Poetry was inspired by me just expressing my feelings, and it grew over the years.

Whether it’s pain, sadness, joy or grief, I encourage myself to write about it,” she said.

Ericka also has a deep passion for reciting poems in public, something she started at a very young age in church.

“Being on stage and having the ability to memorise these poems, whether they were short or lengthy, were the highlight of my day at that age. I read poems written by our local Bahamian authors such as Susan J Wallace (’Ma Dog’ and ‘Oh Con Jesse’) and Michael Pintard (’Bus Ride’) and some international ones like the late author Maya Angelou (’Still I Rise’),” she said.

“The most influential poetry I have ever read was ‘Still I Rise’; it was this poem that catapulted my dream to reality.”

The fascinating history of mulberries Jack Hardy asks some interesting questions about the tree which helps produce one our most sought-after fabrics – silk.

“H

ere we go round the mulberry bush On a cold and frosty morning.”

This well-known nursery rhyme song raises two questions: What are we doing going around a mulberry bush, and why are we doing it in such bad conditions?

The answers may lie in the speculation that a mulberry tree existed in the women’s section of Wakefield Prison in England in the mid-19th century and that compulsory exercise was the reason for being out in such inclement conditions. The song existed as, “Here we go round the bramble bush” and was changed to mulberry bush even though mulberries grow on trees, not bushes. One further question: What was a mulberry tree doing in a prison yard in England?

There are many species of mulberry tree, but three – Morus alba (white, China), M rubra (red, USA), and M nigra (black, China) – predominate.

Early Western explorers to China were fascinated by silk and the silk industry which had been established in China for thousands of years. In the second century, sericulture (silk farming) began in India, and to this day China and India are the dominant silk-producing countries. The industry proceeded west and in the sixth century entered Europe

The Moors invaded Spain in 711 CE and stayed for 800 years and established a silk industry there. Britain had a large wool industry but King James I wanted silk.

Silk is produced by caterpillars called silkworms that cocoon themselves in silk fibre produced by specialised glands. One cocoon usually contains 1000 yards (sometimes a mile) of silk.

The cocoon is boiled to kill the pupa and the silk wound onto a spool. It takes 2,500 cocoons to produce a pound of silk.

The whole operation is dependent on mulberry leaves, the only food the silkworm will eat at the pre-larval stage.

Silkworms will eat black mulberry leaves to a certain extent but white mulberry leaves are much preferred.

King James got his silkworm eggs but the wrong type of mulberry. A million black mulberry trees were planted throughout England and the whole venture failed because they were not white mulberry trees. Thanks to slavery, however, Britain was able to establish a cotton industry, but not silk.

Britain produces fine woollen products but no silk. Bahamian lawyers have to rely on Italy and Armani for their work clothes.

The fascinating story of the mulberry demonstrates that it grows in a tremendous range of both soil and climatic conditions. The black mulberry tree in a prison yard in Yorkshire is the same as we grow in The Bahamas.

In good conditions mulberry trees can reach 60 feet but 30 feet is about the limit locally. Even that is too much tree for most yards and mulberries can be pruned annually to remain at about 15 feet. A mature mulberry tree is a heavy bearer and the fruits ripen fast allowing a tree to be stripped of ripe fruits at least twice a week.

The fruits resemble long black raspberries; at the red stage they are very sour, at the black ripe stage very sweet.

At the ripe stage they make a lovely fruit pie, usually with the addition of sliced apples. They also make fine jam.

If you use them for a jelly you can add a few red fruits to intensify the flavour and add the required pectin.

The fruits of the mulberry tree are berries by name but only contain one seed per cluster and are therefore drupes.

Black mulberries are often referred to as stalk-less because the fruits grow close to the branch. There is a stalk but most of it lies within the fruit. This can be a nuisance when eating the berries out of hand but the stalks are tenderised during cooking. A ripe berry only needs a slight touch and it will drop to the ground so picking a quantity of fruit is often a venture. The obvious method of collection is to place an old bed sheet under the tree and gently shake the branches, which are very limber.

You always know when the grandchildren have been raiding the mulberry tree because the juice colours their hands and faces. Mulberry fruit juice has been used as a dye for centuries and also as a health agent to treat blood and the kidneys. It is also used to treat urinary incontinence, tinnitus, dizziness and constipation in the elderly and the anaemic.

Now the bad news. Mulberry trees, whether grown from seeds or cuttings, take at least 10 years to produce fruits, and then only sparsely to begin with.

The best time to plant a mulberry tree?

literary lives – louis l’amour

How the West was immortalised Sir Christopher Ondaatje journeys across Colorado and Utah to find out about the American novelist and short story writer whose frontier stories spawned some of the bestloved Western films.

ast month, in March, my wife and I drove over 700 miles from Grand Junction in Colorado to Moab in Utah, seeing the incredible Arches and Canyonlands Parks (there is nowhere else in the world quite like it), before travelling down to Monument Valley, and then east 160 miles to the old silver mining town of Durango on the Animas River near the New Mexico border. It was a dramatic journey deep into Navajo Indian territory, seeking out the Victorian Strater Hotel – once home to the great author of Western novels Louis L’Amour.

Louis L’Amour (1908 - 1988) Louis L’Amour was born Louis Dearborn LaMoore in Jamestown, North Dakota, in 1908 – the seventh child of a veterinarian and farm-equipment broker. After a series of devastating bank failures and economical reversals in the upper Midwest in 1923, Doctor LaMoore moved south, taking with him his wife, Louis and his adopted son John. These were bad times for the LaMoore family and they

picked up work where they could – skinning cattle in Texas, baling hay in New Mexico, and working the mines of Arizona, California and Nevada.

An independent young man, Louis journeyed sometimes with his family – but often alone, not only in the mines but also as a seaman – travelling to the Dutch East Indies, Egypt, and Panama, ending up in the 1930s in Choctaw, Oklahoma, where he changed his name

to Louis L’Amour, and set his mind and ambition to becoming a writer.

He had little success with poetry or with his guide book articles and scrounged a living where he could.

They were lean disappointing years.

However, in 1930 he managed to place his story “Death Westbound” in a popular pulp photo magazine of scantily dressed women, and another, “Anything for a Pal” in a magazine curiously named True Gang Life – that had a brief career in the 1930s cashing in on the popularity of gangster stories.

After that, particularly after 1938, L’Amour stories appeared more often in pulp magazines – but the financial rewards were meagre. Although L’Amour created the character of Jim Mayo – a mercenary sea captain – in the early 1940s, he only wrote one Western story, “The Town No Guns Could Tame”, before 1939 and the start of World War II when he served in the US Army as a Lieutenant Quartermaster.

He didn’t have much time for writing during the war, but in 1946 “Law of the Desert Born” was published in Dime Western Magazine. It looked as if he had found his market – spurred by the popularity of Hopalong Cassidy and other Western films.

“Westward the Tide” was published in World’s Work in 1951, and his short story “The Gift of the Cochise” (Colliers, 1952) was seen by John Wayne who purchased the screen rights for $4,000. The main character’s name in the film was changed to Hondo Lane and L’Amour published a new longer book version of his short story titling it Hondo. John Wayne later said that Hondo was the finest Western he had ever read.

Louis L’amour was a prolific writer and wrote a great many novels under his own name and also that of Jim Mayo. based on a series of Life magazine articles from 1959, was produced by Metro Goldwyn Mayer. Set between 1839 and 1889, the film follows four generations of a family as they move westwards from New York to the Pacific Ocean.

Carroll Baker, Lee J Cobb, Henry Fonda, Gregory Peck, James Stewart, John Wayne, Debbie Reynolds and Richard Widmark all starred in the legendary film. In an unusual twist of fortune, Louis L’amour wrote a novelisation of James R Webb’s screenplay for the film, recounting, with different names and characters, the westward migration of the mid 19th century. His novel, of the same title, “How the West Was Won”, not surprisingly attained instantaneous success and popularity – so much so that it is often mistakenly stated that the film was made from L’Amour’s book. This is not so. It was an opportunistic literary creation and not plagiarism.

Continued from page 21 It was in 1966 that Louis L’amour moved to the Strater Hotel in the town of Durango in Colorado with his wife and two children and started working on a series of novels about the William Tell Sackett family – an ambitious project which later spread to other families and four centuries of North American history. L’Amour would spend much of the summer each year in room 222, immediately above the Diamond Belle Saloon at the Strater Hotel where he was inspired by the polyrhythms of the ragtime piano that played below him in the bar of the red-brick Victorian hotel.

He lived and worked in the hotel, and in the 1980s bought a 1,000 acre ranch west of the town and began dividing his time between California and Colorado.

By now he was immensely successful and, before he died of lung cancer in 1988, he left a towering legacy of more than a hundred books, more than two hundred short stories, and scores of movies.

In 1982, L’Amour received the Congressional Gold Medal, and in 1984 President Ronald Reagan awarded L’Amour the Presidential Medal of Freedom. His autobiography, Education of a Wandering Man describing his peripatetic years as an itinerant worker in the West, was published posthumously in 1989.

It was important for us to drive out West to see and feel the country that Louis L’Amour wrote about.

In his long and eventful life L’Amour jumbled up the old West of myth and legend, and churned out tight, fastpaced, well-researched narrative full of action and atmosphere. He captured a West in which many of us would have found it impossible to survive.

He was racist and sexist, but he could tell a story of a frontier land that would sell, and sell quickly. Although a high-school drop-out, he developed a formula for writing about well-worn saddles, rugged men, and pretty girls with pert comments. He had the ability to stand outside his arena, describe it,

The hit movie “Hondo” was based on L’Amour’s short story “The Gift of the Cochise”, for which John Wayne purchased the film rights. L’Amour also wrote the novelisation of the film.

L’Amour’s incredible imagination would never let you down – even though it was sometimes repetitious. He knew his craft, and he knew it well. His literary ability defied analysis...

One can argue about Louis L’Amour’s nonexistent authenticity, and perhaps his relentless attention to detail, but it would be impossible to argue about his enormous and continuing popularity.

A ‘Message of Peace’ Anglican Bishop’s yacht sets sail Forgotten facts Paul C Aranha

I

had an interesting chat with a reader who wanted to know whether the Anglican Bishop has a yacht. He sounded relieved that the Rev Laish Boyd is not the man with the yacht.

Before 1936, inter-island travel was by boat and, for most of those years, by sailboat. Sailing is totally dependent on wind and weather and it sometimes took a week, or longer, to sail from Nassau to the nearest island, Andros.

In the 19th century and the early years of the 20th century, the bishop needed a way to visit the many church parishes throughout these islands, so the Anglican church provided a sailing yacht. Over the years, there were three such vessels, each named The Message of Peace. None resembled the luxury yachts we see today, but in comparison to life on the average sloop, the bishop, and his entourage, sailed in comfort.

This weekend in world history April 13 • 1360 – On “Black Monday”, a hail storm kills an estimated 1,000 English soldiers in Chartres, France. The devastation also played a part in the Hundred Years’ War between England and France.

• 1902 – J C Penney opens his first store in the frontier town of Kemmerer, Wyoming. This mother store is still in operation today.

The first yacht was built in Nova Scotia, but the second was built right here, on New Providence and The Nassau Guardian of May 21, 1881 ran this short notice: “The Bishop’s yacht, built by Mr F J Aranha, will be launched on the 28th instant, from the ship-yard of the builder, East Bay Street. She will take the name of the yacht of the late Bishop Venables, ‘The Message of Peace’.”

On June 1, 1881, this was followed by: “Launching of the Bishop’s yacht. On Saturday afternoon, a large gathering took place, at the ship-yard of Mr F J Aranha, in East Bay Street, to witness the launching of the Bishop of Nassau’s Mission schooner The Message of Peace.

“Soon after six o’clock, a short dedication service was held, during which the vessel was named by Mrs E B A Taylor. The Bishop and his Chaplain (the Rev F W A Strange), together with the following Clergy, were assembled on a platform, erected under the bowsprit, viz.: The Rev B Swan, Rector of Christ Church; the Rev J H Fisher, of St Agnes; the Rev C C Wakefield, B A, St Mary’s; Rev H Philpot, St Peter and St Paul; Rev J Roberts, Acting Rector of St Matthew’s.

A whole new world of possibility NAGB opens its amphitheatre

A

rt isn’t all about the indoors; it’s just as much about the outdoors. Inspirations can come from nature, its beauty and magnificence. So it only makes sense that the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas (NAGB) displays art pieces not only in the confines of its historic house, but also on the exterior. Now, the gallery has opened itself up to outdoor spaces in another major way.

A recently opened outdoor amphitheatre will allow the community to interact with the gallery in a whole new way. What was once a neglected property next to the NAGB has been totally transformed and turned into a public space for art, music and entertainment and community bonding.

It’s a project that has been a year in the making and is a part of a larger initiative of the Historic Charlestown Committee, which aims to keep this part of historic Nassau in pristine condition, paying homage to the past, present and future Nassau. The committee is an informal group comprising the NAGB, Graycliff, the Greek Orthodox Church, St Francis Xavier Cathedral, Educulture, John Watling’s Distillery, the Downtown Nassau Partnership, and members of the surrounding community.

The city of Nassau was once called Charlestown, and the group thought it would do well to bring back the name and the allure that came with the beautiful old town. And the amphitheatre is a welcome addition to the scenery of Charlestown, which includes West and West Hill Streets.

NAGB Director Amanda Coulson thought it vital to make use of the gallery’s abandoned property on the eastern side just next to Hospital Lane. “The property was sitting there, abandoned and not very

beautiful. The ancient wall was falling into the road, where there were abandoned handbags and dumping. It’s been proven by research that less crime happens if places look well-maintained.

It shows there’s people there and that something is happening.

So, we decided to take on the project and change the face of the street.”

That idea bloomed into an entire amphitheatre – a place for outdoor concerts, community gatherings, educational talks for students, and more.

Dr Ethan Fried, head botanist of the Bahamas National Trust’s Leon Levy Plant Preserve in Eleuthera, partnered with the NAGB to take out any non-native species of plants on the property and replant only native trees. According to Mrs Coulson, this resulted in the return of many butterflies and hummingbirds, who seemed happy to have indigenous food to eat.

Jessica Malms of Alexiou and Co took a look at the map of the property and saw the natural shape of the front of the hill as a bowl. From this vision, terraces were created that will prevent former issues of a wash-down of plant life from the hill.

Artist Tyrone Ferguson created new gates for the gallery’s property that reflect the indigenous plants now beautifying the spot.

“We want to tell the story of land and culture,” said Mrs Coulson. “ ‘Bahamianess’ is a combination of indigenous as well as many imported things. It tells the story of a population forced to move and to change their landscape to survive. The mesh of

Corporate entities such as Bahamas Waste, Green Systems, Native Sun and Fox Hill Nursery, along with a number of private citizens, came forward to help make the amphitheatre a reality. On Friday past, they all came together to celebrate the opening of the new addition, which has been named “Fiona’s Theatre”, named after chamber pianist Fiona Albek.

Fiona Albek was known to Bahamians as she visited many times with her twin sister, Ambra. As acclaimed classical musicians, the Albek Duo gave of their time, energy and effort to the music scene in the country. They performed concerts for the benefit of charitable ventures and also invested time with kids to inspire them in the world of music and art. Fiona died of an illness a few years ago, leaving her twin to still find her way to the Bahamas from time to time, sewing seeds in a country they both came to love. At Fiona’s funeral, her parents kindly asked attendees to donate to the NAGB and so in part, the successful opening of the amphitheatre is attributed to Fiona.

“We were also able to restore the building on West Hill Street, built in the late 1700s,” Mrs Coulson revealed. “It was probably a part of the first African hospital – which Hospital Lane is named for, a street cut through the hill to give Africans access to the site,” she added,

“Seeing that there is no major park Downtown, it’s an important addition that will allow for a sanctuary of sorts for people who work in the city to come and have lunch,” she said, adding that every visitor should be sure to keep it clean and respect the space. There are plans for Friday evening jam sessions, and the community should feel free to contact the NAGB to organise times to utilise the space.

Let your voice be heard

I

write this with tears in my eyes and shame in my heart. There are times when things just overwhelm us. I have hit a brick wall; it keeps getting higher and higher…Sometimes I feel that there are people who add nettles and thorns just when I figure out how to overcome the obstacles.

The Easter week was especially trying and at moments I felt that my vocation as an animal advocate was being tested by forces I could no longer battle.

Evil can only be overcome by strength, good and determination, but believe me, there are times when one’s vocation is tested and one’s determination put on the line for all to challenge.

“Me voila”, as the French would say.

I have screamed and begged, done TV appearances and radio, written to the papers and posted on Facebook, and I have been rewarded by a stony silence from those in authority. I feel as if I am perhaps an annoying horse-fly buzzing around the ears of those who could help me, but I am not worthy of even a furtive glance.

The Bahamas Humane Society is steadfastly committed to helping those who are the silent victims of cruelty.

Every day we try and bring victims to the shelter to avoid future unnecessary abuse; every day we visit houses and make an effort to explain to those who know not better that a four-foot, 10-pound chain is not only overkill, but cruel to secure a 20lbs potcake dog; every day we have people come in with animals who are the victims of unspeakable acts…every day we have to see this.

Our shelter is overflowing with dogs that desperately need homes. Yes, so many of you out there prefer to purchase poorly bred dogs at exorbitant prices...dogs whose pedigree is nothing short of questionable; dogs, who most likely, will suffer the repercussions of interbreeding and cost you a small for-

tune to cure…dogs that you paid a king’s ransom for.

The position of president of any organisation is one of responsibility; whatever happens on your watch is your fault.

Interestingly enough, with the title has come scores of phone calls a day to my personal phone reporting the smallest of animal infractions, many that I do not know how to deal with and I have to, in turn, refer to my staff at the shelter. People will call me personally, day and night, for the slightest thing, including a frog under their bed…I kid you not! Yet, now, when I need public outcry, when we need everybody to stand firm and demand that action be taken to find the deplorable people who commit heinous animal cruelty, many of those people stand strangely silent.

A couple of days ago, I was at the airport and a lady approached me. Once she confirmed who I was, she told me how some years ago her neighbour would col-

lect up all the potcakes in the neighbourhood for his pit bull to kill. “He doesn’t do it anymore; there are no more potcakes in the area,” she told me.

I have called upon the responsible pit bull owners of New Providence and the Bully Club members to stand firm and publicly with me to say that they do not condone this kind of outrageous and cruel behaviour. I have asked them to denounce the person who commits such vile acts. Yet I still stand in the public forum alone. My e-mails to various members of the government remain unanswered, my phone calls to members of the RBPF remain unreturned.

Somehow, the advocate is being treated as a pariah. I simply do not understand how, as a people, as a nation, there are not more people reaching out to the BHS and to me, saying they want to help us and that they condemn what they saw on the tape. It is simply not good enough to stop me in the street and tell me you

admire me and the fact that I am standing for what is right. I need you to join me in the public forum, stand next to me…Let our leaders know that we insist that animal cruelty be taken seriously, demand that people who commit violent acts of cruelty be punished to the fullest extent of the law. Demand that energy and determination be applied to finding, charging and convicting any culprit who is cruel.

We shake our heads from the safety of the living room; we pat the head of the dog we own and love, we sigh, “What is the world coming to”, then pad off to bed and do nothing about it.

I say to you now, please, now is the time to act. Contact your representative and tell them you want action, you want justice and you will stand firm until this happens.

orking 9 to 5...” Sheena isn’t actually working but she’d love to work her way into your heart! This oneyear-old potcake was bottle-raised by one of the Bahamas Humane Society’s amazing foster parents, but has now made her way to the shelter and is waiting for that special someone to adopt her. Sheena’s friendly with adults, kids and other dogs, and would probably be willing to give cats a try, too (as friends, not as dinner!).

She’s welcome to stay at the BHS as long as she needs to, as it’s a no-kill shelter, but Sheena would rather go home sooner than later. She could easily be trained as an indoor dog, being potcake smart. If you’d like to find out more about Sheena, come in and meet her or call 323-5138. Adoption hours are 11am to 4pm, Monday to Friday, and 10am to 4pm on Saturday. Sheena is keen to meet you.

• The next Thrift Shop jewellery sale will be held this Saturday from 10am to 2pm. As usual, there’s a great selection and a wide range of prices, and all proceeds go to the Bahamas Humane Society.
