Trinity Methodist celebrates 160 years of faith and service
By JEFFARAH GIBSON Tribune Features Writer jgibson@tribunemedia.net
TRINITY Methodist Church is marking a momentous milestone—160 years of faith, fellowship, and service to the community. Under the theme “Honouring Our Past, Embracing Our Future,” the congregation has planned a series of celebrations that not only reflect on its rich history but also reaffirm its commitment to serving others in the years ahead.
The anniversary festivities began with a Faith and Wellness Family Night, where members focused on mental and physical well-being. The event included a faith and fitness fun run/walk from Trinity Church to Arawak Cay, followed by a communal breakfast.
Rev Carla Culmer, who has served at Trinity Methodist for the past year and a half, expressed the importance of blending faith with action. “We started our celebrating last week, and we are using our same theme—honouring our past, embracing our future,” she said.
The celebrations will continue on April 5th with a prayer breakfast at 8am. The highlight of the anniversary will be the official Family Service and Luncheon on April 6th at 11 a.m., where past and present members, along with the wider community, are invited to join in worship and fellowship.
As Trinity Methodist reflects on its legacy, the church is also looking toward the future—one deeply rooted in community outreach. “It caused us to reflect on our past. Trinity has had a glorious past. It was a very large church that has had a great impact. And so, we are not as big numerically as we once were, but it causes us to see how we are going to be the church in the future,” Rev Culmer said.
Trinity has remained steadfast in its mission to serve, particularly through its soup kitchen, scout groups, and outreach programs.
“We average about over 100 to our soup kitchen every Tuesday. We provide them with food, a meal, toiletries, and grocery bags. We also provide school supplies for
our kids. We also provide meals for our scout children when they come for scouts,” Rev Culmer said.
Located in the heart of downtown Nassau, the church is aware of the challenges faced by many in the area, including homelessness.
“I want to remind you that we are in the downtown area. There are homeless people that live in our area, although we are in a business area,” she noted. Trinity Methodist remains a pillar of hope, ensuring that those in need find support and care.
While the church has a strong history, its leadership is focused on growing its congregation and adapting to modern times.
“We want to reach people digitally as well. We have people who join our service who do not live in The Bahamas,” Rev. Culmer said, emphasizing the importance of expanding the church’s presence beyond its physical walls.
One of her greatest priorities is strengthening families as the church treks forward.
“My biggest thing is family. Family is the most important building block in The Bahamas and any nation. We are focusing a lot on family — how do you build stronger families? How do we heal broken families? How do we get our families to be all that God wants them to be?”
As the church celebrates what they consider a remarkable anniversary, it remains committed to its mission — not just on Sundays, but every day, in the lives of those it serves.
Bahamian Pastor returns home to serve at Christ Community Church
By ALESHA CADET Tribune Features Reporter acadet@tribuneemdia.net
AFTER 12 years away, Pastor Jermaine L Watkins Sr is finally back in The Bahamas. His journey has been nothing short of remarkable - launching businesses, serving in ministry, and furthering his education - but throughout it all, his heart remained in his homeland.
Now, he has returned with a renewed purpose: to serve on the pastoral team at Christ Community Church under the leadership of Bishop Deanza Cunningham.
For Pastor Watkins, the transition home has been both an answer to prayer and a major life shift. “ I’ve only just arrived this week, however it’s an answer to prayers. It comes with a level of anxiety as well if I’m being honest, because it’s a major transition for me. I’m also very grateful,” he shared with Tribune Religion.
Pastor Watkins’ experience in ministry spans both the Bahamas and the United States. He previously served at New Life Fellowship Church and Abundant Life Church and, most recently, pastored Noah’s Ark Missionary Baptist Church in South Carolina. Each role, he says, has contributed to his growth as a leader and servant of God.
“All of my experiences have shaped me from the standpoint of my capacity to lead on my compassion for the people that I lead. Ministry is complex and challenging, but I’ve seen enough and been through enough that has adequately, I believe, equipped me to help not only serve, but to lead,” he explained.
His new role at Christ Community Church is particularly meaningful, as he has had a long-standing relationship with Bishop Cunningham and the church family. “What people may not know is that when I started a church 16 years ago, Bishop Cunningham and Christ community Church supported me in doing so. As matter of fact, they helped me with my salary for two years. Not only that, they supplied the chairs for my church. And also supplied me with people that helped me launch the church,” he revealed.
For Pastor Watkins, joining the pastoral team is both a privilege and a homecoming. “In order to be a great leader, you have to be a great follower and so therefore it’s a great privilege to serve alongside my Bishop. Bishop Cunningham is a man of integrity a man of honor and I couldn’t be more proud to stand alongside him and the leaders at Christ community Church,” he said.
Returning to The Bahamas after more than a decade comes with its own set of challenges, particularly in adapting to changes in relationships, community, and culture. However, Pastor Watkins is trusting in divine timing.
“I always knew that I would be returning home at some point. But trusting God’s timing and his Providence that he would allow it to happen in his time. I haven’t tried to rush the process or control the process, but allow God to lead the process,” he said.
Having lived in North Charleston, South Carolina, for the past 12 years, Pastor Watkins acknowledges that adjusting to life back home will take time.
“I’ve recognised that life has moved on from 12 years ago when I left. Relationships have changed. Individuals have gotten older, and even loved ones have passed. So, there will indeed be a transition. Because it’s not the same as when I left. And so there will be a learning period. There will be an adjusting period that I am looking forward to,” he said.
In addition to his new pastoral role, Pastor Watkins is preparing to release his book titled The Best is Yet to Come, in September. The project is deeply personal, drawing from his own struggles and moments of uncertainty.
“The book comes out of some of the pain that I experienced in my life and a season where I felt as if I would
not make it, could not make it. In the book, I share the principles and the revelations that I experienced during that time, of how the best days were ahead of me and not behind me,” he shared.
His hope is that readers will find encouragement and inspiration in his words, taking that same lesson that the front mirror is bigger than the rearview mirror, and that what God has in front of them is bigger than what is behind them.
“And absolutely, no matter what they’ve been through, whatever they’ve experienced, how far they’ve gone, that God can redeem and restore them, and that the absolute best is yet to come,” said Pastor Watkins.
CELEBRATING OUR PRINCESSES
A TOTAL of 137 young girls enrolled in Princess Court Mentoring Ministries took part in a ceremony on Sunday at Central Zion Baptist Church in Eight Mile Rock.
Ann Marie Davis, wife of Prime Minister Philip Davis, was the keynote speaker and commended the young girls. She said: “Princesses, today you stand before God. You are affirming yourselves and you are here giving a commitment to live a life rooted in spiritual growth, in Godly values, integrity and purity. That is so admirable.”
The six-week programme is open to girls ages five to 18 and was created in 2008 by Minister Stephanie Burrows and teaches young ladies to embrace spiritual growth, uphold Godly values and pursue roles as homemakers and leaders.
Mrs Davis pointed out that the Princess Court Mentoring Ministries has remained steadfast in its mission to inspire and empower girls across The Bahamas and praised the programme’s dedication to guiding young women to embrace purity, leadership and virtuous living.
“In a world that often presents countless distractions and temptations of all kinds, your decision to hold fast of your faith and your moral principles is both courageous, admirable and also serves as an inspiration to all of us,” she said.
Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry for Grand Bahama Kingsley Smith and deputy director of Urban Renewal Senator Kirkland Russell were also present.

ST GEORGE’S CELEBRATES FAMILIES
ON March 30, the Anglican Diocese of the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands kicked off its theme for 2025, “Family Matters,” with the first Family Sunday of the year, drawing inspiration from Joshua 24:15.
St George’s Anglican Church held a lively service at 8am, where families came together, proudly adorned in their pink shirts, filling the church to capacity.
The service was a vibrant showcase of participation from the youth, who engaged the congregation through music, song, and dance.
The new youth director, Pamela Deveaux, delivered an inspiring address centered around the theme of family, reinforcing the importance of unity and love within the household.
During the service, several special recognitions took place: prizes were awarded for the oldest male and female congregants, the youngest congregant, and the largest family, celebrating the diversity and richness of family life within the parish.
Honouring service to the church, former youth director Patrice Green, priest warden Gevon Moss, and people’s warden Jerome Knowles were celebrated for their contributions.
To further commemorate Mothering Sunday, all mothers were presented with beautiful carnations from the church’s youth council.
After the service, children delighted in treats like snow cones, popcorn, and cotton candy, while vendors such as Nu Guai Farm showcased native plants, seedlings, and homemade jams. Local entrepreneur Daria Ferguson offered her products, while Nurse Conliffe provided valuable health checks, including glucose, cholesterol, and blood pressure screenings.
The Kidney Association represented by Tamika Roberts also participated, sharing information on kidney health and offering free screenings to congregants.
The morning culminated in a communal breakfast, fostering togetherness and connection among families.
In the afternoon, the parish came together for the annual Mothering Sunday service and march at Christ Church Cathedral, the mother church. Youth members performed a skit written by Richea Deveaux, capturing the essence of family love and community spirit. Following the performance, the streets were filled with a vibrant sea of pink as families paraded with flags and pom-poms, embodying the theme of spreading love and unity.
St George’s Anglican Church is dedicated to nurturing and spreading love within the community, illustrating the profound significance of family in our lives. The day’s celebrations not only honored mothers but also reinforced the bonds that hold families and communities together, underlining the message that Family Matters most of all. If you do not have a church home, you can visit St George’s Anglican Church at 7am and 9am Sunday services.
