Bahamian artist Mr J nominated for three Prayze Factor Awards By JEFFARAH GIBSON Tribune Features Writer jgibson@tribunemedia.net
F
or the second time, Bahamian gospel singer Gesner “Mr J” Dalmond has been nominated for the Prayze Factor Awards, this time in three categories. And to snag one of the the international awards, the local singer needs his fans and fellow Bahamians to vote for him. Mr J is nominated the International Solo Artist of the Year awards. And as producer and host of the new show “Kingdom Citizens Connect TV” on the PGN Network, he is also nominated for the International TV/Show Host of the Year and International TV/Network of the Year awards. Founded and produced by Apostle Dr Teresa Jordan (affectionately known as Pastor T), the Prayze Factor Awards, based in Atlanta, Georgia, are designed to bring maximum exposure faithbased arts on a national and international level. “The feeling of being nominated is a very good and encouraging feeling,” Mr J told Tribune Religion. “The music industry is a very tough arena to be in, with thousands upon thousands of artists all striving for the same things: exposure, airplay support and music sales support. Being an independent artist as I am makes that (even tougher),” he said. Being nominated for a second time validates Mr J’s efforts over the last 10 years to solidify his place
not only on the local music scene but the international stage as well. “This tells me that I am making progress… I’m quite happy about that because persons far away who do not know me, appreciate what they hear from me,” he said. As the Prayze Factor Awards are a fan-voted platform, artists are required to engage their fans in voting, commenting, and promoting their music and ministries. While this is a friendly competition, it offers artists a platform to draw attention to not only themselves and their work, but also the realness of Jesus Christ. “To win in either category would most likely be a feeling I probably wouldn’t be able to aptly describe. However, I would put it in one word: overjoyed, in particular, if it’s in the category of TV Show Host of The Year or TV Network of the Year,” he said. “I have had many persons encourage me to go into either radio or TV because they thought that I have a radio voice which would be a good fit in either of those fields. I guess I can say that their prophecy came to pass, as I did not look for it but it found me,” he said. There are two rounds during a period of Prayze Factor promotions. Nominees will be afforded several opportunities for the promotion of their ministries, opportunities to engage their fans and opportunities to show their nation’s the strength in the performing arts For more information, visit www. prayzefactorawards.com.

Holding firm through Lent By ALESHA CADET Tribune Features Reporter acadet@tribunemedia.net THE 40-day period from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday is known as Lent, and it encourages Christians to give up personal pleasures as a form of penitence. Tribune Religion spoke to a number of Bahamian believers who shared their journeys so far in this season of Lent. “I have given up a few things but I want to touch on something else,” said Mary Culmer. “If you are a true believer, you would notice that there is never such a time for you to be tested than during Lent. And when I say tested, I mean temptations, troubles, problems; they all seem to be very heavy during this time. But the goal is to remain focused and remember the goal of it all: penitence and reflection. When these things come my

way, I have to remind myself of what season we are in.” Lent is one of the most significant seasons in the year on the Christian calendar – a time of solemnity and self-reflection when the faithful confess their failings and resolve to live a godlier life based on the teachings of Jesus Christ. Jessica Turnquest said she gave up all social media for Lent. “This is something I find myself on every day, the social network sites. When it isn’t Facebook, it’s Twitter or Instagram. And Lent
is about not just giving up any old thing, it is giving up something you think you cannot go a day without. It is about making a sacrifice and not so much punishing yourself, but learning to live without,” she said. Rev Angela C Bosfield Palacious stated in a recent “COVID-19 and Lent” column that Lent is an excellent time to consider distancing yourselves from social behaviour that is not in keeping with the gospel, things like using obscene language, which is so prevalent in society today; using

addictive substances that alter the mind and personality, and indulging in immoral and illegal activities. Some believers also agree that Lent is not only a time to give up something, but add something to your usual routine as well. “Let’s say you are in the area of your life where you are saving more - you can use Lent as a time to maybe give more, whether it's to a programme in your community or to a total stranger,” said David Johnson. Actor Mark Wahlberg, who is always vocal about his faith, said every year people always ask him what he is going to give up. But during 2020, he decided that instead of doing less, it was time to do more. “Let's try to do more. More love, more peace, more acceptance. More caring and more kindness,” he said.

his partial alphabet format is intended to help you remember some key points and to memorize them to help others: A – ADMIT that you need a relationship with God and that you can always keep growing closer. You may eventually realise that you cannot live abundantly from a spiritual perspective without God at the centre of your life, and that God is always with you offering you an amazing experience of love. B – BE a consistent persistent person of prayer who recognizes that God is closer than your very breath. Your prayers will become a harmonious blend of approaches, including praise,

thanksgiving, confession, intercession and petition.
C – Continuous daily reading of scripture to saturate yourself in the word of God. You may integrate Psalms 131: 3 GNT (“As a child lies quietly in its mother's arms, so my heart is quiet within me”) and 139:1GNT (Lord, you have examined me and you know me. You know everything I do; from far away you understand all my thoughts) with a passage like Philippians 4:6-8 which includes encouragement to be thankful and peaceful (“Don't worry about anything, but in all your prayers ask God for what you need, always asking him with a thankful heart. And God's peace, which is far beyond human understanding, will keep your hearts and minds safe in union with Christ Jesus. In conclusion, my friends, fill your
minds with those things that are good and that deserve praise: things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and honorable.”) D – DEDICATED service enables you to assist others spiritually and materially. Your gifts from the Holy Spirit position you to develop God's plan with determination. The ministry of the church is greatly enhanced by faithful servant leaders and followers, all of whom seek to love their "neighbours." E – ENTHUSIASTIC worship ushers you into the very throne room where God's presence is paramount. Whether you are alone or in a room full of believers, your joy abounds as you recall what
Jesus did on the cross and the place that is waiting for you in heaven. F – FORGIVENESS freely offered and undeservedly available is a gracious gift which once received is intended to be extended to you and to others. I leave you to fill in the gaps with the rest of the alphabet. May you never forget to apply them. • Rev Angela Palacious, a motivational speaker and author of several devotional books, is an Anglican priest. Navy barred from acting against religious vaccine refusers By JESSICA GRESKO Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge in Texas is barring the Navy from taking action for now against sailors who have objected to being vaccinated against COVID-19 on religious grounds. U.S. District Judge Reed O'Connor had in January issued a preliminary injunction preventing the Navy from disciplining or discharging 35 sailors who sued over the Navy's vaccine policy while their case played out. On Monday, O'Connor agreed the case could go forward as a class action lawsuit and issued a preliminary injunction covering the approximately 4,000 sailors who have objected on religious grounds to being vaccinated. O'Connor said the larger group of sailors shared common characteristics with those who had sued. They had asked for and been denied an exemption to the vaccine requirement on religious grounds and were facing the threat of being discharged from the Navy, O'Connor wrote. "Even though their personal circumstances may factually differ in small ways, the threat is the same — get the jab or lose your job," wrote O'Connor, who was nominated to the bench by President George W. Bush. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin last year made vaccinations mandatory for service members. More than 99% of the Navy's active duty force has been vaccinated against COVID-19, and the Navy has also

“Navy personnel routinely operate for extended periods of time in confined spaces that are ripe breeding grounds for respiratory illnesses, where mitigation measures such as distancing are impractical or impossible. A SEAL who falls ill not only cannot complete his or her own mission, but risks infecting others as well, particularly in close quarters, including on submarines.” Biden administration lawyers discharged 650 people for refusing to be vaccinated. Navy guidelines allow for exemptions to the vaccine requirement on religious
and other grounds, including medical reasons and if a service member is about to leave the Navy.
Lawyers for the group of sailors who sued, most of them Navy SEALs, argue that the Navy had granted hundreds of exemptions for medical and administrative reasons but granted no religious exemptions for active duty and reserve service members. Nine inactive reserve members have been granted religious exemptions. Mike Berry, the director of military affairs for First Liberty Institute, which is representing the sailors, said in a statement following O'Connor's action that it's "time for our military to honor its constitutional obligations and grant religious accommodations for
service members with sincere religious objections to the vaccine." While the case is still at an early stage, the U.S. Supreme Court in a brief order Friday narrowed the impact of O'Connor's original injunction, saying that the Navy could still consider the vaccination status of the sailors who sued in making deployment, assignment and other operational decisions. O'Connor's latest injunction allows the Navy to consider vaccination status in making those decisions about members of the larger group as well. President Joe Biden's administration had argued that not allowing the Navy
to consider vaccination status in making assignments posed "intolerable risks to safety and mission success." "Navy personnel routinely operate for extended periods of time in confined spaces that are ripe breeding grounds for respiratory illnesses, where mitigation measures such as distancing are impractical or impossible," Biden administration lawyers wrote. "A SEAL who falls ill not only cannot complete his or her own mission, but risks infecting others as well, particularly in close quarters, including on submarines."

Life Changers Ministries introduce initiatives to improve members’ health By CARA HUNT Tribune Features Writer cbrennen@tribunemedia.net
L
ife Changers Ministries International wants to cater to the health needs of their members in addition to their spiritual ones. The church has declared that 2022 is “The Year of REVIVAL”, an acronym for restoration, elevation, victory, increase, vision, acceleration and liberty for God's people, under the leadership of Apostle Valentino Williams, senior pastor "To this end, we wish to see revival take place holistically in our people. One of our goals as a ministry this year is to promote health and wellness, both physically and mentally. As a nation, we see that our people are plagued with so many health challenges, from diabetes to hypertension and obesity," said Stefphen Sands, director of communications/ marketing at the church. "Sometimes all it takes is a lifestyle change, so launching our ‘Get Fit with J’ fitness programme on Saturday, March 5, was the perfect way to get this initiative started. The programme was well-received and we had a great turnout, so we are excited to continue in this vein over the course or the year.” In the near future, he said, the church will also host a “Health & Wellness Month” as well as quarterly health and wellness seminars to track progress and help members achieve the goals they have set for this year. He explained the plan is to meet monthly on the first Saturday of every month at 9am for “Get Fit With J” "As time progresses and the demand is stronger, we are open to increasing from once per month to perhaps every other Saturday or even every Saturday. We’re open. We want to see healthy, whole people in our congregation and the nation at large. Persons can expect to be pushed, to be motivated and to break personal records! This is the year that they will be their best, do their best and live their best life,” he said. Stefphen said the church wanted to start the programme as soon as possible. “Why not now? We do not believe in procrastination at LCMI; we strike while the iron is hot. The beginning of the year is typically the time when people are motivated, New Year's resolutions are still fresh in their hearts and a steady momentum is built to achieve goals. So, we say again…why not now?”
