uests attending last weekend’s Travel & Adventure Show in Philadelphia got a real taste of the Bahamas.

The Ministry of Tourism joined scores of vendors from around in the world in displaying the best the island nation has to offer.

In addition to expert advice and informative brochures, the Tourism officials also invited recording artist Julien Believe to perform on the Global Beats Stage and give would-be visitors an introduction to Bahamian-style entertainment.

Dubbed “America’s favourite travel show”, the event series features celebrity travel speakers, expert packing tips, technology trends and budget travel hacks.

Guests can talk to local destination experts who have the inside knowledge of where to go and what to do at their chosen destinations.

interview She is passionate about improving the quality of life for Bahamians, and as a recipient of President Barack Obama’s 2016 Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative, Tanya McFall’s dream to inspire the nation’s youth is about to come true. She speaks to Cara Hunt about how she wants to do her part to make the Bahamas more multicultural.

“I

have always wanted to help people live better lives,” Tanya McFall told Tribune Weekend.

“I have done quite a bit of travelling, and what inspired me is that despite the opportunities that are out there, people are still not able to live the lives that they deserve. So many people are living in poverty, and in the Bahamas I feel that we have the resources so that no child should have to go hungry.”

Tanya was a recipient of the Charles E Kelly Scholarship from the Lyford Cay Foundation. She is also a former national youth ambassador for the United Nations Education Science and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

Certified as a tax administrator and international risk manager, she has travelled extensively to represent the Bahamas, and has also lived in China for a brief time. Currently, she is a co-director of a free summer camp that caters to more than 300 youth in the

Farm Road community at the Mount Pleasant Green Church.

Tanya – who holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing – is passionate about social entrepreneurship, youth development and socio-economic development.

And if she has learned anything in her travels around the world, it is the importance of being bi- or multilingual in today’s global village.

She said it is an area in which Bahamians are unfortunately lacking.

“We do not have enough people who can speak multiple languages despite the fact that we have more then 100 different nationalities with a presence in the Bahamas. And when you compare us to a country like Aruba, where by the time they graduate, students know how to speak four different languages, you can see where we are lacking here. We have to have the language skills if we want to have any impact on the global market,” she said. “With a knowledge of language,

you open yourself up to a world of innovative opportunities right here in the country.”

She also encourages young people to travel as much as possible to further their education, and gain exposure and experience overseas.

“There is more to life than the Bahamas. Go to Australia or Malta or Africa; you have to look for opportunities and embrace them and not wait for others to create them for you.”

Last fall, Tanya herself embraced an opportunity that is about to yield tremendous results in the form of a new youth-oriented project which is expected to affect hundreds of Bahamian students.

Former United States President Barack Obama selected 250 entrepreneurs from 4,000 applicants in 36 countries for his inaugural Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI). Tanya was selected to represent the Bahamas in the initiative.

“The application process was a tedious process,” she said. “There were pages and pages of questions and essays to write. I then received an e-mail saying that I was selected as a semi-finalist.

That process was even more intense.

I had to do video interviews. I would be given 30 seconds to think about my answers and one minute to answer, and at the end of the one minute the video would just shut off, finished or not. A week later I was informed that I had been selected and it was just a feeling of shock and joy,” she recalled.

“It was amazing to realise that I was included in 250 young people who are true agents of change.”

YLAI finalists from Latin America and the Caribbean had the opportunity to expand their leadership and entrepreneurial experience through fellowships at businesses and civil society organisations across the US. As part of the experience, Tanya was able to participate in a series of events in Dallas, Texas, where she met a number of prominent individuals and heads of mega corporations. She also completed a second session in Portland. The experience culminated with events in Washington, DC. “We were in Washington the week of the election, which was very interesting, especially when you consider the reaction people had when they heard that Donald Trump had won,” she said.

While she was not able to meet President Obama personally, she said she was able to meet a good friend of his, Sir Richard Branson.

“We have to have the language skills if we want to have any impact on the global market.

With a knowledge of language, you open yourself up to a world of innovative opportunities right here in the country.”

“He was just so nice and down to earth, and I was inspired by his story; how he started with nothing and is now a multi-billionaire.”

And she still dreams to one day meet the 44th president of the US. “Although I didn’t get to meet him, I really hope to meet Mr Obama some day.”

Tanya’s initiative is called Project Social. It’s a youth-oriented project for junior and senior high school students that seeks to spark social entrepreneurial innovation and increase multiculturalism while spurring on foreign language training.

“Our aim is to create a multicultural Bahamas while encouraging our youth to develop socially inclusive ventures that embrace foreign languages for a better, more sustainable Bahamas.

The islands we will visit are Grand Bahama, Cat Island and Eleuthera. In the near future, we intend to establish this initiative in other Family Islands to expose residents to the opportunities available to citizens of the free world,” she said.

“Project Social will expose participants to the importance of multiculturalism in the Bahamas. We encourage community leaders to provide greater opportunities to travel around the world, using their experience as an impetus to make socio-economic ameliorations that are desperately needed in many communities.

“Making projects sustainable is an issue many public and private organisations have faced in the past few years. We will maintain engagement with parents, students, schools and island administrators by enhancing current volunteer programmes. Change is the order for the day, thus we’ll celebrate our successful innovators and provide them with the network and technical access. Project Social will be an annual event. We’ll partner with market leaders regionally and internationally.”

Tanya added: “Project Social aims to drive youth entrepreneurship, reduce youth unemployment and thereby play a vital role in the development of the economy.”

Project Social started yesterday and is scheduled to run until April 7, with the intent to impact 500 students over a 10-day period at the Kevin Tomlinson Academy (Grand Bahama), Arthur’s Town High School and Old Bight High School (Cat Island) and Preston H Albury High School (Eleuthera).

Dive into a relaxing dining experience

hether you’re looking for a bountiful breakfast buffet, a casual lunch, or an elegant dinner experience, Aqua at the British Colonial Hilton strives to fulfil all of its customers’ wishes.

The restaurant is open to all, locals, visitors and hotel guests alike, and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner – all in a laid-back atmosphere and with a soothing view of the sea. It offers both buffet and a la carte choices.

“We cater to Bahamians, tourists, and also if persons are looking to celebrate special events,” said Andrea Damianos, assistant manager at Aqua.

“Apart from the dining experience, we host special events outside at the patio bar and grill.

The blue and green décor, she added, reflects not only the name ‘Aqua’, but is also inspired by the hotel’s private beach.

“All this is geared to bring you in for a calming experience. Persons also talk about the food a lot. Even though the menu is local, Chef puts a twist on everything to make the menu pop,” said Ms Damianos.

For Chef Christopher Chea, his 40year experience in the culinary field has taught him to look at his job as Aqua’s senior sous chef as more than just a title, but rather a cooking adventure.

“I have been here at Aqua a year and three months. In this field you get to travel and learn to create new dishes.

You get to eat the best in food that is available and more,” he said.

And Chef Chea is always eager that his guests enjoy his creations.

“Guest satisfaction is first and foremost. Their commentary on the food, the taste and presentation is everything.

And there is nothing better than a happy customer. We have casual dining, but we do offer table cloth service at night to create a difference. On Fridays,

we offer a Caribbean-Bahamian buffet, on Saturday a seafood buffet, and on Sunday a brunch buffet where people flock in after church,” he said.

Aqua’s breakfast options include eggs Benedict; waffles; boiled or stewed snapper with herbs; Spanish onion and

potatoes, and steak and eggs. Lunch choices, for example, are the lobster bisque soup finished with cream and a hint of brandy; the Aqua salad served with berry vinaigrette; grilled tuna with rice and vegetables, and tomato salsa; broiled lobster; the Aqua burger, and

salmon panini. For dessert you can choose from tropical guava cheesecake and more.

Meanwhile, the dinner menu includes surf and turf, conch and scampi, and grilled pork chops, among other dishes.

New event seeks to enliven local social scene

‘S

auce’ was the name of the game last Sunday, as the Hillside Gallery played host to a unique event that merged the visual, musical and culinary arts with fashion.

Guests enjoyed a fashion show, live painting, as well as a culinary demonstrations.

The group of artists who came together to organise the event were Chef Horatio Smith, model Ashley Bethone, visual artist Ashla Bethone, the Sabrina Boutique and DJ Drizz .

They all have a strong desire to see the entertainment scene in Nassau take on a new dimension. At the same time they crave unique spaces where artists can have a platform to express themselves on a regular basis.

Chef Smith, who also served as event coordinator, said they took into consideration the complaint by many Bahamians that local entertainment options lack diversity.

With ‘Sauce: Art Demonstration and Food Tasting’ they sought to address this.

“I got together with Ashley and Ashla, and we thought it would be cool to present a show all around sauce. Ashla and Ashley host a show every year called how ‘Soulection’, and this was like a precursor to that,” he said. “What we wanted to do was create a platform for creatives to come out and do things.

‘Sauce’ was a promotion of everything young, fresh, hip and fun.

Models showed off the designs by the Sabrina Boutique to the sounds of DJ Drizz, while Ashla completed a live art painting and Horatio catered to guests’ palates with his interesting bites paired with a number of homemade sauces.

Ashla said: “I just wanted to create a painting that is really saucy and drippy. The painting is of a female in a spring lake and it is very wet because that is the energy I wanted to come with since the show is ‘Sauce’. I used some really rich colours like gold, silver, purple, blue, red and little bit of orange.”

For the event, Horatio, owner of Horatio Alexander Catering, created about 15 different sauces, 14 of which were made from scratch.

“The thought was to just open my mind and my tongue to be creative. The actual food is very simple; we have things like carrot sticks, locally grown celery, locally grown herbs, and pairing that with a homemade pita and chicken to give people that blank canvas experience,” he said.

“For the sauces we did a lot of cool things like a mango and goat pepper basil Thai sauce, a homemade ketchup, pineapple salsa – just a lot of fun stuff and fun combinations. Things that are different and things that are not so different.

We also did salted caramel and chocolate sauce that is paired with the pita.”

Horatio said they are all looking forward to hosting more events like ‘Sauce’.

“We want to do more things like this. For an urban city like we are, we don’t have enough areas and outlets for artists and their talents to be showcased. So hopefully with my catering company we can do more partnerships with local artists and creatives to add to the scene,” he said.

“We touched basis with Antonius Roberts who is a wonderful friend of the arts and he gave us the space to use and that was another big thing. I try my best to support the artists whether, they are young old or in between. We look to do these types of events every quarter, whether it is art inspired or fashion inspired.”

Horatio added that the sponsorship from Summit Insurance also helped to make the event happen.

‘Midnight Mas’ – a taste of Carnival to come

embers of the Enigma Bahamas carnival group can forget about their comfy beds tonight as they plan to stay up until the sun comes up tomorrow - all in the name of celebrating their ‘Midnight Mas’.

The late night fete kicks off tonight at 11.59pm at Arawak Cay beach, featuring the sounds of DJ Xtra-Large.

Organisers and leaders of the mas band said the event will be a time for powder, paint and non-stop partying.

And based on the turn-out of last year’s ‘Midnight Mas’, they expect this weekend’s event to be “epic”.

Darren Bastian, of Enigma, invites the public to party with the group and get a taste of what the Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival experience will be like when it kicks off in Nassau on May 4.

“We want people to join us because it will be a really fun event. We had the ‘Midnight Mas’ last year and what a turn-out that was! People thoroughly enjoyed themselves at the event,” he said.

And beyond just having fun at ‘Midnight Mas’, Mr Bastian encouraged people to come out and see what Enigma is all about. Those who make deposits for their costumes will also be given a complimentary ticket for ‘Midnight Mas’.

Enigma recently attracted hundreds of revellers for their costume launch and takeover of Rawson Square. The event offered a sneak peak of what can be expected from Enigma’s “Empire” theme, which is inspired by countries around the world.

“Last year we exceeded 600 people in the band and it would be great to exceed that. Based on the way things have been shaping up and the things that we have been doing, I am confident that we will exceed that number this time around,” said Mr Bastian.

one, we started off with around 400 persons participating with us. I think our growth has to do with what we present. We like to do things that are new, innovative. Enigma has also attracted the attention of international partygoers who are interested in the hitting the road with the group.

“We have been getting a lot of international attention. People from aboard have been calling to find out what kind of activities and events we have planned. I think that speaks to the level of marketing that we have been doing,” said Mr Bastian. The band is also seeking sponsorship from local entities. “We received sponsorship from BTC and we are grateful to the company for their contribution. Sponsorship goes a long way in helping the group,” he said.

“The Roanoke Girls” (Crown), by Amy Engel

gothic undertones that delves into the worst secrets that families keep. “The Roanoke Girls” gains its strength from Engel’s skillful storytelling that never succumbs to the prurient but shows how easily the vulnerable can be manipulated.

Lane Roanoke was 15 years old when her chronically depressed mother hanged herself in their New York City apartment. Her mother never spoke about her parents, Yates and Lillian Roanoke, their mansion or her small hometown of Osage Flats, Kansas.

Lane is surprised when her social worker says her grandparents are eager to have her come live with them. In Kansas, Lane finds a home of sorts, growing close to her cousin Allegra, who’s only a year older, and exploring the rambling house also called Roanoke. Lane also finds the cachet of being a Roanoke.

The wealthy Yates loves to spoil his grandchildren and is a benefactor to the town. But something happens during that summer that appalls Lane, and she leaves.

Long-time staples in English literature courses, dystopian works are attracting new attention from casual readers and social book clubs. Local theater groups are adapting versions for the stage. College courses on dystopian classics are suddenly drawing long wait lists.

Much of the renewed interest has followed the November election of President Donald Trump, which publishers and scholars say is no coincidence.

“Definitely the election had an effect,” said LuAnn Walther,” editorial director of the paperback division at Knopf. “There’s fear out there about what is going to happen, and I think these predictive books are helpful to people who are looking for the dangers the future might hold.”

One edition of “1984” has seen sales jump by 10,000 per cent since January, when Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway defended incorrect claims as “alternative facts” in a TV interview. It instantly drew comparisons to the type of government manipulation Orwell wrote about nearly 70 years ago.

“That was so perfectly Orwellian, that truth is variable and can be changed, and that there’s a fact and then there’s a counter-fact,” said Peter Stansky, an Orwell biographer and a

professor emeritus of history at Stanford University.

Some experts say readers often return to dystopian works during periods of great change, hoping to find out how they can avoid the nightmarish worlds the works depict. Beyond the US election, readers might be jarred by events like the global refugee crisis, some say.

“There’s a factor of activism that you can take away from reading dystopian fiction, reading it as a defense against who we might become,” said Therese Cox, a doctoral candidate teaching a course on dystopian fiction at Columbia University. “It speaks to impulses and fears that we’ve had for a very long time.”

Others say new adaptations of classic works have fueled renewed interest. Hulu is releasing a TV version of “The Handmaid’s Tale” in April, telling the story of a woman in New England after an oppressive religious regime takes over. In June, a British stage production of “1984” is headed to Broadway.

‘Roanoke Girls’ is storytelling at its finest

est known for her young adult novels, Amy Engel makes a strong foray into adult fiction with a gripping tale about the power and corrosiveness within families weighed down by the past. “The Roanoke Girls” delivers a dark story with modern

Dystopian fiction is selling like there’s no tomorrow SAVE the light reading for later. In 2017, dystopian fiction is all the rage.

Gloomy classics depicting societies gone terribly wrong have shot to the top of best-seller lists like Amazon’s in recent months, including George Orwell’s “1984” and Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” prompting publishers to ramp up production decades after the books were first released.

Others have followed close behind, such as Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World,” Sinclair Lewis’ “It Can’t Happen Here” and Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451.”

Some non-fiction works in the same vein have seen similar resurgences, including Hannah Arendt’s 1951 “Origins

from Yates, begging her to come home because Allegra has disappeared. The years haven’t been kind to Lane, who has basically drifted while living in Los Angeles, picking up menial jobs and eventually destroying any relationship she’s had. Although she was determined never to return, Lane is drawn back to Roanoke, harboring a deep guilt for leaving Allegra behind. While the local police cannot find Allegra, Lane follows a set of clues her cousin left specifically for her.

Engel smoothly alternates between the present and that summer a decade ago. Lane never quite got over her first love, bad-boy Cooper Sullivan, nor ever forgiven her dangerously charismatic grandfather or her brittle, cold grandmother.

While Engel reveals some secrets of the house quite early, her focus on the characters makes the final revelations even more devastating. “The Roanoke Girls” is storytelling at its finest.

CSI writer’s debut novel is tough, gritty crime thriller

elissa Scrivner-Love’s “Lola,” her first novel, utilises her television background – she’s written for “CSI: Mi-

ami” and “Person of Interest” – and familiarity with law enforcement to craft a tough, gritty and graphic crime thriller.

Lola, who had a rough childhood, now lives with her boyfriend, Garcia, leader of a South Central Los Angeles gang called the Crenshaw Six. the Crenshaw Six, and she’s more ruthless than anyone can possibly imagine. She uses her brother as an example of the length she will go to show that a woman can be just as tough as a man, and create an even bigger empire.

The environment and neighbourhood that Love creates on the page feels vivid and real. As a character who is strong, vibrant — and a true villain in every sense — Lola is the star of this tale. Although there are too many characters to juggle in the story, the focus on Lola and the people she surrounds herself with makes this one of the best written crime dramas to be published in quite some time.

Party like it’s 1933!

T

he year is 1933, a time when gangsters like Al Capone ruled the streets, back room gambling ran rampant, Prohibition was in place and drinking only happened secretly at speakeasies.

A rumour began to spread that after 11 years, Prohibition was coming to an end. Being the quickwitted entrepreneur that he was, Freddy Heineken had a barge of the beer that bore his family name sent to New York. This allowed Heineken to be the first imported beer in the United States after Prohibition.

Last Friday, the second Heineken Escape themed party brought the glitz and glamour of 1930s New York to The Pier in downtown Nassau.

Guests enjoyed unique features like being greeted by a live saxophonist, stylish props and selfie screens, as well as music by DJ Baby D, DJ Ignite, DJ Overdose and DJ Tank. Hosted by Super Mario, the event offered live casino games with the opportunity to win branded Heineken items.

Cara says: “This is one of those outfits you see hanging on the rack in the store and you are like, ‘Oh, that may be cute,’ then you try it on and immediately you realise, ‘No, take it off right now’. It just doesn’t work. I get the idea behind it and the colour is lovely, but it just looks off to me.”

Karin says: “It’s a cute enough dress for this kind of event. The colours are a bit boring. I always feel if you have go casual in style, at least go bold in colour. But it’s a fine choice otherwise.

Love the long side braid.”

Cara says: “I really think this dress is adorable. I like that the print is subtle yet still bold enough that it makes a statement. I like the simple choice of accessories and I like her lil’ side ponytail. I may try that actually.”

Karin says: “The only thing I like about this ensemble are the copper coloured tennis shoes. They are a fun touch. Now the dress on the other hand...It’s like a 12-year-old’s tea party dress. You can easily pair girly with sporty, but not in this way. I also hate the shiny material and the fine stripes.”

Cara says: “It’s young and fresh, and for her type of style, it’s cute. I wouldn’t wear it, but it’s cute and I like the sneakers with it. However, she looks just a tad pale and I would have loved to have seen her with a bit more colour.”

Karin says: “This royal blue colour is simply stunning on her. And I love that she chose a jumpsuit. So many of them don’t fit right, but when they do, they are a fantastic alternative to a floorlength gown. A highlight is definitely the off-the-shoulder element. And it works that she kept it simple with no accessories.”

Cara says: “I really am loving rompers/ jumpsuits, because they are so comfy and easy to throw on. This colour is lovely on her. I love the shape of the design .However, my only complaint would be that she should have jazzed it up a bit more with some bling.”

Dreaming of Shakespeare

Q

ueen’s College students brought Shakespeare’s beloved comedy “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” to life in the school’s Geoffrey Brown Auditorium last week.

Over two nights, the cast of 25 high schoolers had fun frolicking on stage in their costumes as they interpreted the sometimes challenging language with confidence.

The play, produced by QC’s English language and literature teacher Lauren Tovey, follows the

school’s successful staging of the hit musical “Grease” last year.

In “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, the students told the story of the events surrounding the marriage of Theseus, the Duke of Athens, to Hippolyta, the former queen of the Amazons. Along the way, the audience witnesses the adventures of four young Athenian lovers and a group of six amateur actors who are controlled and manipulated by the fairies who inhabit the forest in which most of the play is set.

‘Roanoke Girls’ is storytelling at its finest

Dystopian fiction is selling like there’s no tomorrow SAVE the light reading for later. In 2017, dystopian fiction is all the rage.

Gloomy classics depicting societies gone terribly wrong have shot to the top of best-seller lists like Amazon’s in recent months, including George Orwell’s “1984” and Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” prompting publishers to ramp up production decades after the books were first released.

Others have followed close behind, such as Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World,” Sinclair Lewis’ “It Can’t Happen Here” and Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451.”

Some non-fiction works in the same vein have seen similar resurgences, including Hannah Arendt’s 1951 “Origins of Totalitarianism.”

Long-time staples in English literature courses, dystopian works are attracting new attention from casual readers and social book clubs. Local theater groups are adapting versions for

the stage. College courses on dystopian classics are suddenly drawing long wait lists.

Much of the renewed interest has followed the November election of President Donald Trump, which publishers and scholars say is no coincidence.

“Definitely the election had an effect,” said LuAnn Walther,” editorial director of the paperback division at Knopf. “There’s fear out there about what is going to happen, and I think these predictive books are helpful to people who are looking for the dangers the future might hold.”

One edition of “1984” has seen sales jump by 10,000 per cent since January, when Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway defended incorrect claims as “alternative facts” in a TV interview. It instantly drew comparisons to the type of government manipulation Orwell wrote about nearly 70 years ago.

“That was so perfectly Orwellian, that truth is variable and can be changed, and that there’s a fact and then there’s a counter-fact,” said Peter Stansky, an Orwell biographer and a professor emeritus of history at Stanford University.

Some experts say readers often return to dystopian works during periods of great change, hoping to find out how they can avoid the nightmarish worlds

the works depict. Beyond the US election, readers might be jarred by events like the global refugee crisis, some say.

“There’s a factor of activism that you can take away from reading dystopian fiction, reading it as a defense against who we might become,” said Therese Cox, a doctoral candidate teaching a course on dystopian fiction at Columbia University. “It speaks to impulses and fears that we’ve had for a very long time.”

Others say new adaptations of classic works have fueled renewed interest. Hulu is releasing a TV version of “The Handmaid’s Tale” in April, telling the story of a woman in New England after an oppressive religious regime takes over.

In June, a British stage production of “1984” is headed to Broadway.

Engel smoothly alternates between the present and that summer a decade ago. Lane never quite got over her first love, bad-boy Cooper Sullivan, nor ever forgiven her dangerously charismatic grandfather or her brittle, cold grandmother.

While Engel reveals some secrets of the house quite early, her focus on the characters makes the final revelations even more devastating. “The Roanoke Girls” is storytelling at its finest.

Some of the best animated films have been inspired by fairy tales, ancient Greek fables or mythology. Now comes one clearly inspired by, of all people, David Mamet.

The creators of ‘The Boss Baby’ have obviously been mining the playwright’s gritty, foul-mouthed ‘Glengarry

Scarlett Johansson as ‘Major’ tale and builds out the backstory with a more conventional narrative of self-discovery for the Major (Johansson), whose body (her “shell”) we see majestically assembled around a human brain (her “ghost”) in the opening credits.

The result doesn’t have the same eerie chill as the original, but preserving just a sliver of the hard edge to Oshii’s film would still make ‘The Ghost in the Shell’ more extreme than most any other of today’s franchise hopefuls.

Yet casting Johansson in the lead

nist, it’s haunted by a fundamental defect — a bug in the system that can’t be dispelled, that doesn’t pass, despite the considerable cyberpunk splendour of Sanders’ eye-popping visual feast.

It’s the rare movie to earn its ‘Blade Runner’ comparisons. But it also earns its controversy.

Oshii’s anime film was a moody, mysterious futuristic tale with striking imagery and a buzzing existential drone.

Sanders (‘Snow White and the Huntsman’) streamlines much of the

Glen Ross’ to build the title character, a ruthless, capitalist-minded newborn with pupils the size of saucers who insists that “Cookies are for closers.”

To make the connection even firmer, they’ve hired Alec Baldwin to voice the baby, reprising in cartoon version his motivational speaker from hell from the 1992 film version of ‘Glengarry Glen Ross’. The baby is also drawn in Baldwin’s black suit and tie with a gold watch and slicked-back hair.

The casting and homage to Mamet’s snarling, soulless character is funny indeed but seems somewhat outsized in this sweet film, overpowering its understated humour and terrific animation. Altogether, it sometimes seems like ‘The Boss Baby’ was a really good 20-minute short film that became stretched out like a piece of gum until the taste grew stale.

Dazzling ‘Ghost in the Shell’ is lost in translation

role (earlier dubbed Major Motoko Kusanagi) in a quintessentially Japanese story makes for a perpetual disconnect “The Ghost in the Shell” can’t resolve, though it tries to.

Her body may be a robotic artifice but the history of Hollywood whitewashing Asian characters is all too real.

Black-haired Johansson, while totally game, often appears just as much the tourist in Tokyo as she did in Sofia Coppola’s ‘Lost in Translation’.

Major is an asset, a weapon for the Hanka Corporation, and part of a counter-terrorism force that includes her partner Batou (the up-and-coming Danish actor Pilou Asbaek) and is overseen by Chief Daisuke Aramaki (the Japanese veteran actor and filmmaker Takeshi Kitano). They soon begin pursuit of a hacker named Kuze (Michael Pitt), and track him through the crime scenes and the data trail he leaves behind. The closer she gets, the more glitches begin obscuring the Major’s vision.

New Port City is the futuristic Tokyo-like setting, and though everyone is infused with robotic and digital enhancements, the Major is a oneof-a-kind hybrid. Feeling ever more removed from her “ghost”, she’s cut off from her memories.

McCullers, an alumnus of “Saturday Night Live” who went on to write some of the “Austin Powers” movies, has built an insane plot to accommodate Frazee’s briefcase-wielding, spicy tuna roll-loving parody of 1980s avarice.

Both the book and film share the same premise — that a baby’s arrival changes a family. The movie version is told from the point of view of a sevenyear-old only child with a swoop of hair (Miles Bakshi) whose idyllic world is shattered by the arrival of son No 2

(Baldwin). It gets worse: The new baby can both talk and scheme. He’s actually undercover on behalf of a corporate behemoth to push his agenda. (New parents will totally get that.)

Directed by Tom McGrath, the director of the ‘Madagascar’ franchise, ‘The Boss Baby’ is best when it riffs off other action films, such as ‘The Matrix’ and ‘Raiders Of The Lost Ark’, to name a few.

Painting the beauty of the human body

HE group of artists known as 3rilogy is gearing up to present an exhibit of natural and monochromatic works that celebrates the human

body.

Entitled “ Fifty Shades of Paint”, the show opens on April 6 at the Central Bank of the Bahamas, from 6pm to 9pm.

Jamaal Rolle, Allan P Wallace and Stefan Davis are coming together to showcase their individual eclectic styles of approaching art.

Mr Davis, owner of Airbrush Junkies, has been operating a successful business in the Mall at Marathon for more than 25 years.

Mr Wallace is an award-winning artist whose work has been featured on international news stations and blogs. His murals are also prominently featured throughout the country, notably at the Lukka Kairi restaurant on Woodes Rogers Wharf.

Stefan Davis the ‘Celebrity Artist’ and the newspaper’s daily cartoonist, who has presented portraits to world leaders and prominent figures such as Pope Francis, President Barack Obama and Oprah Winfrey.

A representative of the group told Tribune Weekend that the name of the upcoming exhibition was inspired by the desire to educate, entertain and give patrons an engaging experience.

“The unique works will challenge perceptions, create discussion, and ultimately highlight love, passion and

emotion as the great beautifier,” the group said.

“The main message that is intended to be received by the viewers is the fact that there is beauty in each form of the human figure – both male and female.”

The group’s aim is to also have patrons connect the colours, shades, figures, applications and styles to the beauty of the human body. The exhibition is set to conclude on April 28.

As to what else the immediate future holds for 3rilogy, the group’s representative noted that while each member is

involved in personal projects, supporters can still look forward to the third edition of their successful ‘ParticiPaint’ event. More details and updates will follow via the 3rilogy Facebook page.

‘ParticiPaint’ is a new artistic entertainment concept. The event allows patrons to leave their artistic impressions by making a mark on the many canvases provided, while at the same time socialising with the artists and fellow guests. The main highlight of the event is the featured artists’ stage performance.

Exhibit exposes women’s emotional ‘baggage’

n the pursuit of perfection, whether that be so excel at something, to look our best or feel our best, somewhere along the way baggage is picked up and left unpacked. And it is only until down the line, when we are confronted with it, we realise all along there has been baggage was left unchecked.

With her latest exhibit, artist Susan Katz-Lightbourn wants to inspire people to unburden themselves from societal pressures and let go of anything keeping them from being their true selves.

The show is “Exposed” and will feature four large collage pieces and nine assemblage pieces. It will be unveiled at the Hillside House Art Gallery with an opening event on April 13 from 6pm to 9pm. Each piece explores a different theme.

The inspiration for this show, Mrs Katz-Lightbourn said, was specifically the baggage that women carry around with them throughout their lives.

“As young girls we are plagued with mixed messages about what it means to be female. We plough through glossy magazines and social media and are subjected to endless ways in which we look at ourselves and perhaps feel unworthy.

In turn, we starve ourselves to be thin,

fix what we think isn’t quite perfect by using plastic surgery, or submit to the pressures and demands of society and become depressed,” she said.

“By using collage and assemblage, I have created pieces that explore these issues. Eating disorders and how women objectify themselves in order to fit in are some of the themes which I explore. We as women strive to do it all, yet in the process we can lose ourselves as well.”

The pieces in the show, she explained, are focused on how women have evolved throughout the decades and how each decade makes its mark on how far we have come.

“From the 50s housewife to women’s lib in the 70s, women have conquered social expectations and standards. We have come a long way baby, but there is still plenty to work on. We are complex creatures and face uphill battles in a world that is far from perfect. Our identities are shaped by life experiences as a mother, daughter or partner. We still continue to judge ourselves based on our own expectations. I believe that we need to give ourselves permission to grow and to realise that it’s OK if we’re not a size,” she said.

“I know from personal experience how difficult learning to let go of certain ideals can be and that holding onto this baggage can be extremely difficult. It is only when we break out of these boxes that we have allowed to define us that we can truly be in control of ourselves.”

Creating collages and assemblages is Mrs Katz-Lightbourn’s chosen medium as it gives her a freedom that other mediums do not.

“Collage allows me the freedom to use a variety of colours and textures in my work. I collect all sorts of things that most people would throw out, such as bottle caps, old papers, labels and just junk in general. I add these to my never-ending collection of ‘stuff’ and eventually it will end up in a piece of work. Assemblage seemed like the natural next step for me because it allows me to use my collage technique while adding objects to three dimensional supports. I love to use things like empty boxes and picture frames and suitcases to create individual narratives. While I’m working on these pieces, I try to give each piece its own feeling. By using these two mediums together I feel as if I have taken my work to another level of creativity and one in which I am able to expand upon in endless ways,” she said.

Originally from Boston, Mrs Katz-Lightbourn has been living in the Bahamas for more than 27 years. While in college, she majored in illustration with an emphasis on fashion illustration.

Once completed, she graduated with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts and worked as a freelance illustrator in the Boston area, creating work for ad agencies, magazines and any job that required drawing.

“It was an incredibly competitive field during that time so I took many illustration jobs that seemed small at the time but helped in the long run in to develop my style and build up my portfolio. In between freelancing I married a Bahamian and four years later moved here to Nassau. Needless to say, the culture shock for me was huge and there wasn’t much work here during the early 90s for a practicing illustrator. Eventually I began working on pieces that weren’t commercial but rather more ‘fine art’, while always keeping my illustrative style in place. Over the years I have been through many mediums, but I have finally come to a place in my practice where I feel the most fulfilled and creative,” she said.

“Exposed” will remain on display at Hillside House April 7 - 30.

literary lives sir david attenborough

Life in the wild The world’s foremost natural history presenter, still going strong at 90, once rescued a prestigious lecture beset by technical issues. Sir Christopher Ondaatje remains indebted to him.

1998

was a particularly good year for me because I had my first bestselling book, ‘Journey to the Source of

the Nile’.

I was invited to speak at many literary festivals as well as the National History Museum in New York, the Royal Geographical Society in London and the Royal Ontario Museum in Canada.

In November that year, I was invited to speak to the British Museum in London – a great honour. There were many celebrities in the audience, including the director of the Royal Geographical Society, Dr Rita Gardner, Graham Greene, the chairman of the British Museum, and Charles Saumarez Smith, the director of the National Portrait Gallery.

It was a packed house of nearly 400 and I started my speech with two carousels containing 120 dramatic colour slides covering the Nile journey.

“At the beginning of the 19th century, Europeans knew very little about Africa,” I began. “In a remarkably short space of time, missionaries arrived, introducing Christianity. Then came explorers who located, surveyed and mapped rivers and mountains, and catalogued flora and fauna. These explorations paved the way for increasing European domination, until, 100 years later, the enormous continent was ruled by European powers: England,

“One of his most important decisions was to commission Kenneth Clark to host and narrate the 13-part series ‘Civilisation’. It was broadcast in 1969 to universal acclaim and became the blueprint for other documentaries on history and western art.”

by Europeans are being blurred by the forces of independence and dictatorship, as well as the reemergence of tribal influences and the growth of Islam.

“I have always found Africa compelling. I had been in Africa, had written about Africa before.

Now I was back again, unable to stay away. The intricate origins of the Nile, the greatest of Africa’s rivers, still intrigue us, invite study and compel awe. Very few people understand the complexities of the Nile’s discovery. I had wanted to see for myself the now-legendary places where this great life-giving river began its journey north through the vast stretches of Africa. Like John Hanning Speke, I wanted to be able to say for myself,

Things were going well and did so for the next 30 minutes, when the first carousel of 60 slides ended. The efficient projectionist had been well rehearsed to change to the second carousel with no delay before the second half of my lecture. But then the worst possible thing happened: there was a long pause - and then an even longer one.

The carousel was not changed and the promised slides did not appear. Finally the embarrassed projectionist came down from his projection room and on to the stage to explain that the second carousel had jammed in the projector and that by trying to force it out the 60 remaining slides were strewn over the projection room floor.

It was a lecturer’s worst nightmare and I had to excuse myself from my audience to try to re-organise the slides into their proper order. This would take some time and I had to leave the lecture theatre for an embarrassing silent 10 or 15 minutes.

However, luckily for me, Sir David Attenborough – probably the bestknown natural history presenter – was in the audience and he, realising the awkward problem, immediately bounded onto the stage and spoke to the audience, explained the technical disaster and entertained the crowd with his own personal stories and embarrassing moments.

It did not take me long in the projection room to realise that it was impossible to put my slides in anything like the proper order. It would take a good half hour or more. So I returned to the stage and gave the second half of my lecture without slides. Thankfully, my story could stand on its own merit and I completed my lecture successfully. But Sir David had saved my evening for me and we had a relaxed and very pleasant dinner together, with some excellent wine, hosted by the Governors of the British Museum. Thanks to him the evening had been a resounding success.

David Attenborough was born in Isleworth, West London, but spent his early life on the campus of University College, Leicester, where his father was Principal. Even at a very young age he collected fossils and other natural specimens.

He was educated at Wyggeston Grammar School in Leicester and won a scholarship to Clare College, Cambridge, in 1945, where he received a degree in natural sciences.

In 1947, he spent two years doing his national service in the Royal Navy and in 1950 married Jane Elizabeth Ebs-

David Attenborough after he was appointed the new head of BBC 2 in 1965.

After Attenborough left the Navy he edited children’s science textbooks but left disillusioned and, in 1950, applied for a radio production job with the BBC. He was rejected. However, the head of BBC broadcasting suggested that Attenborough take a three-month training course, which he did, and in 1952 the BBC hired him full time.

He worked for the “Talks” production department and his early projects included the quiz show ‘Animal, Vegetable, Mineral?’ and ‘Zoo Quest’ in 1954. The BBC Natural History Unit was formed in 1957 in Bristol but Attenborough refused to move there, preferring instead to form his own Travel and Exploration Unit in London, which allowed him to produce documentaries for them, including the Travellers Tales and Adventure series.

Attenborough resigned from the BBC in the early 1960s to study for a Postgraduate degree in Social Anthropology at the London School of Economics, but he agreed to return to BBC Two when it was launched in 1964, as the controller.

The TV channel was having serious problems but Attenborough quickly changed the broadcaster’s schedule, establishing a portfolio of programmes including music, the arts, archaeology, travel, sport and natural history. He completely transformed the station and it became the first British channel to broadcast in colour.

One of his most important decisions was to commission Kenneth Clark to host and narrate the 13-part series ‘Civilisation’. It was broadcast in 1969 to universal acclaim and became the blueprint for other documentaries on history and western art.

This was followed by his ambitious ‘Life on Earth’ project, which he wanted to present himself. 1969 was also the year that Attenborough was made responsible for the programmes of both BBC 1 and BBC 2.

Three years later, it was suggested that he allow his name to be put forward for the post as DirectorGeneral of the BBC. He feared the job would restrict his creative output so he resigned and became an independent broadcaster. ‘Eastwards with Attenborough’ was his first production, after which he started work on ‘Life on Earth’, co-produced by the BBC and Turner Broadcasting in the US, which was broadcast in 1979. There followed a series of Life documentaries in the 1990s, including ‘The Life of Plants’ (1995), ‘The Life of Birds’ (1998), ‘The Life of Mammals’ (2002), and ‘Life in the Undergrowth’ (2005). ‘Life in Cold Blood’ was broadcast in 2008 and completed his encyclopaedic series entitled ‘Life on Land’.

When this last documentary was shown Attenborough was quoted as saying: “If you’d asked me 20 years ago whether we’d be attempting such a mammoth task I’d have said ‘Don’t be ridiculous!’ ... If people watch it in 50 years time, it will still have something to say about the world we live in.”

Sir David continued to collaborate with BBC Natural History. ‘The Blue Planet’ was presented in 2001, and ‘Planet Earth’ in 2006 - the most ambitious of all his projects. In February, 2016, the BBC announced ‘Planet Earth II’ - the sequel to the 2006 television series - with Sir David, again, as presenter. It has just been released to more acclaim.

Now 90, Sir David has not slowed down. He is reputed to be paid more than £1.5m (about $1.9m) a year and has received international recognition for his contribution to broadcasting. He has 32 honorary degrees from British universities, received a Knighthood in 1985, and was made a Companion of Honour (CH) for services to nature broadcasting in 1996. He is now an Honorary Fellow of Clare College in Cambridge and has been the subject of a number of BBC television programmes, ‘Life on Air’, which focus on his time at the British Broadcasting Corporation.

Without a doubt he is the most respected wildlife presenter the broadcasting world has ever known, and has the distinction of having at least 15 newly discovered species and fossils named in his honour.

I cannot think of anyone else on earth who I would rather have chosen to fill in for me when my Nile speech was so brutally interrupted on that warm November evening in 1998 at the British Museum.

The Lake of Fire Forgotten facts Paul C Aranha

O

n a recent trip to Jamaica, I took a night tour to a place where there is phosphorescence in the sea.

The boat’s movement through the water stirred up thousands of tiny lights and, whenever a passenger leaned over the side and put a hand into the water, more magical sea creatures lit up our wake.

That is Jamaica now. That was Lake Waterloo, until the 1960s.

Sir Stafford Sands, the father of modern Bahamian tourism, used to live on the shores of Lake Waterloo and his home is now the Montagu Gardens Steak and Grill, opposite the Nassau Yacht Club, on East Bay Street.

In the1891 edition of ‘Stark’s History of and Guide to The Bahamas’, J H Stark describes the miracle his eyes had witnessed: “Within easy walking distance of Nassau is one of the most remarkable lakes on the island, it is known as ‘Waterloo’ or ‘the Lake of Fire’. It is a phosphorescent lake, one thousand feet long by three hundred feet broad.

The phosphorescence is so powerful that the effect of it is unsurpassed in any part of the world. The lake, of course, should be visited at night, and the darker the night the better. There is no unusual appearance of phosphorescence on the surface of the water, until one gets into a boat and pulls off.

The first stroke of the oars gives you a fine start for, as soon as the oars stir the water up, they seem to be dipped in melted gold, and one cannot resist the belief that there is actual fire there.

It is usual for the visitor to be accompanied by boys swimming alongside of the boat, who produce the most extraordinary effect imaginable, As they move along, one distinctly see the outline of their limbs, beneath the water, swarthed, as it were, in fiery, golden drapery, mystic and wonderful, clearly visible by the unnatural light, presenting quite an unearthly appear-

Whenever any boat travels through water there is, of course, a cutting of water at the bow and an eddy just behind the stern. At Waterloo that cutwater and eddy are of flaming fire.

The lake is full of fish and, as the boat moves along, frightened fish dart about on all sides, leaving fiery trails behind them. Now and then, a turtle is disturbed and, as he moves along, he looks like a revolving sun. As the more-

distant fish move about, they form little vapory clouds of fire, flashing and darting about on the surface, like the northern lights.”

No description can give an adequate idea of the Lake of Fire at Waterloo, and no effect of phosphorescence ordinarily seen, even in the tropics, can suggest even the faintest notion of it ... but the most curious part of the whole affair is that it cannot be accounted for.

The lake, which is artificial, was constructed for the purpose of storing turtles. The bed is cut out of the solid

coral rock, and is only a few hundred yards from the sea, with which it is connected by a small ditch, also cut through the rock. When the gate in the ditch is open, the tide rises and falls in the lake.

No matter how often the water is changed, its phosphorescence is never destroyed and, though it has been several times analysed, no light has ever been thrown on the subject.

here have been lots of comments in the papers this week subsequent to the poor surrey horse Majesty.

‘Skidding’ and ‘falling’, or was it ‘bumping’ or ‘slipping’ and ‘losing his balance’?

Actually it doesn’t really matter.

What happened, apparently, according to the owner of the horse, is that the car in front of the surrey stopped short and the horse had to put on his ‘brakes’ and somehow fell over. If they were not operating the surreys on the busy city streets this could not have happened. It is neither appropriate nor safe to have a horse-drawn carriage jammed up in the middle of automobiles and trucks.

This is a conversation that I have been having for ages. We have suggested alternate routes. We have provided the historical script for the harbour surrey ride. Taking tourists down to the Fish Fry would help other Bahamians expand their business. Isn’t that what it’s all about?

Majesty had a fall, the police forbade people to photograph what happened next, which was unfortunate.

However, it is indeed nice to know that the Bay Street detail of the RBPF are now tuned into the horses and their needs, to the extent of feeling the need to “protect” the fallen horse from curious eyes. However, I did not know that citizens could be forbidden to take a photograph in a public place? Is this not an invasion of the public’s rights?

Surely it was in the public interest to film it. It was not a private conversation that was being recorded.

We understand that Majesty was out on the road,the very next day, purportedly expected to do a full day’s work.

Life is certainly not easy for a surrey horse.

In fact, life is not easy for many horses in the Bahamas.

I was misunderstood when I was quoted as saying that I wanted to stop the surrey horse industry. If the horses suddenly ceased working and were no longer wanted, we, at the BHS, would be quite incapable of coping with them.

Each horse costs a minimum of $600 a week. With more 20 horses, there

is no way we could ever fund their retirement.

No, I have called for a kinder route, for both the horse and the driver. I have called in the past for fresh water to be available at all times (a site that people do not use as a toilet or a car washing centre).

I call for the emergency exit not be blocked, which it constantly is in spite of the ‘No Parking’ sign in big, bold yellow letters. I call for more care in driving. Perhaps young drivers should be required to have a motor vehicle licence so they know the rules of the road.

I was recently told about a situation where three surreys with their passengers were on Charlotte Street, right close up to one another, when an ambulance came upon them. As the horses did not move fast enough, the ambulance driver, in his infinitesimal wisdom, turned on his siren.

Now, I am told that although spooked and uncomfortable, the horses did not suddenly bolt and make for home. Thank goodness!

I had another very disconcerting report from Facebook. I cannot prove its validity, but I fail to see why anybody would make this stuff up.

The lady said that she was on Wulff Road and noticed a horse at the light of East Street and Wulff Road. This horse was extremely skinny. She looked for her phone and wasn’t able to get it fast enough to get photographic evidence or a plate number.

The horse, she said, was tied to a rope and a child was holding the other end sitting in the trunk of a car.

The car was moving so fast the horse had to run to keep up with it, being yanked down the road in the process.

Most of this is directly quoted from her post. Here we also have serious child endangerment. A child sitting in the trunk of a car...what were they thinking?

I do have to say that when the president of the Horse and Carriage Owners and Drivers Association suggests that I come up with some feed for the horses, it makes me wonder if the Bahamas Taxi Association would suggest that passengers bring a gallon of gas when riding in a cab. The surrey horse industry is just that, a business.

I was delighted to hear him refer to a feeding schedule. I would love to know about that. Does it mean that the horses will now be fed during the course of the day as they should be?

Spring cleaning We ‘Spring clean’ in the house, so why not in the garden? Jack Hardy says it’s Spring, so let’s devote part of the upcoming weekend to smartening things up.

et us start with the obvious clean-up that will immediately make a difference. Do you grow bananas? If so, you will have dead or dying leaves to cut away and it is amazing how much smarter the bananas trees look after a trimming. The same applies to tomato vines.

We often concentrate on the upper part of the plants that are producing fruit and ignore the unsightly dead branches and side-shoots that invariably present themselves. Whenever I trim my tomato vines I use an old pair of scissors that I find does the job far better than most garden clippers.

Garden clippers are called secateurs by some, so by using scissors I no doubt commit a ‘non sequitur’.

Palm fronds look horrible once past their best. Cut them away with a prun-

ing saw while the limbs are still juicy and easy to saw through. Manila palms and other palms with sheaths may have to be removed in two stages: first cut away the brown frond, then a week or so later remove the sheath.

By tidying our palms, banana and tomato plants we have not been pruning in the technical sense. But when we turn our attention to citrus trees and do the same job we are pruning. All dead twigs and branches on citrus trees should be clipped away in an ongoing process. Trace down the deadwood until you come to living material and clip just above a growth node.
