Eleuthera hosts third annual ‘Art in the Park’

ahamians may want to consider a quick visit to Eleuthera this April, as the best of that island’s artists and crafters will be coming together to display their work during a one-day festival.

The event, scheduled for April 4 at the Bahamas National Trust’s Leon Levy Preserve, is called “Art in the Park”. It is the third annual edition of the festival which will take place near Governor’s Harbour from 11am to 6pm. In addition to the arts and crafts, the event will feature a selection of wine, signature bites and locally made iced teas.

“It’s wonderful to have come this far to actually be hosting (the festival) for a third time,” said Heidi Johnson, manager of the preserve.

“Everyone has a great time. The preserve is an incredible space and I can’t think of a better space where art and nature blend so well. I’m also happy for the exposure the artists receive, and most are repeat exhibitors, so we’re doing something right.”

The idea for the festival came about when the preserve team was approached by the former Artists Collective of Eleuthera to host an art walk in an effort to give local artists and students a place to display and sell their pieces. The event’s first year was very much a collaborative effort and now the preserve representatives are happy to carry on with the festival.

“There is tremendous talent on the island and it’s to be celebrated.

We have artists that travel from both ends of the island to exhibit their work and we want them to do well,” said Ms Johnson.

The upcoming event will also feature a special installation of artwork by the famous Eddie Minnis and his family.

“Of course we want the guests to have a fabulous time, but I love it when artists get great reception for their pieces and also great sales,” said Ms Johnson.

INTERVIEW While many Bahamians are trying to lose weight, this fashion/fitness model struggled to pack on the pounds. He tells Cara Hunt how he was motivated by movies and TV shows to turn himself into a ‘Greek god’, and share his knowledge and experience with others.

T

he motivation behind Romel Kelly’s fitness journey came from wanting to beef up his “skinny boy” appearance.

And the self-proclaimed “Greek God” – the title he goes by on social media – is happy to use his own experience and the lessons he has learned to help others be their best.

“Ever since I could remember I hated being skinny,” he told to Tribune Weekend.

“Looking at muscular guys on TV or in person, seeing how huge they were, how women admired them; they looked at them different then they would the average guy... them being able to make their chests move, I knew it was something I wanted and had to have.”

Romel embarked on a journey that would not only change his physical appearance but also his life, as he launched his Greek God Fitness brand.

It was not a journey which came overnight, he is quick to point out.

“When I first started out I was inexperienced and didn’t really know anything so it took me two years to see maybe about 15 to 20 pounds (gain), then I ran into hard times and I wasn’t able to go to the gym for almost year. But when I started back I knew exactly what I needed to do and how I needed to go about doing it, so the second go-around it took me two months to see real results,” he said.

Romel describes this journey as a marriage in which consistency and dedication are key.

“This lifestyle is like a marriage; you have stay consistent and faithful some days you can see your results moving forward, other days backwards. I used to be 170 pounds and I’m 6’5, so you can imagine how skinny I truly was.”

“Today I’m 230 pounds. My biggest struggle was getting the necessary calories intake that I needed for my weight gain, but you only ever truly fail when you decide to give up,” he said.

Romel Kelly “I know what it is to stand on a scale at six to seven times a day just going crazy when you don’t see results, sacrificing six days a week towards working out, torturing every single muscle in my body, consuming almost 5,000 calories a day, lifting weights until it feels like the blood in my body was going to burst out, feeling like I was going to pass out in the gym, days of sore muscles.... I was willing to sacrifice it all to transform my body. Everything comes with a price and I’ve over paid my dues for my results.”

Romel’s new body also led to a new confidence in his image, something he was able to translate into a new career, that of a fashion model.

“I got the hang of it pretty quickly. Some things were harder than others – learning poses, angles, lighting, how to walk – all that good stuff, but it was new experience for me

being in front of camera, and to be honest, I loved it,” he said.

After reaching his desired weight and body size, Romel’s girlfriend and others encouraged him to help others to do the same.

“People always told me I should get into fitness but I never really felt it was something for me until my girlfriend convinced me otherwise, to start doing personal training. I later found the love for group fitness and boot camps,” he said.

Romel eventually took their advice and launched the Greek God fitness brand to help others reach their fitness goals.

“I came up with name because people started to tell me how I was built like the Greek gods and the name stuck with me ever since,” he said.

“The services we provide is group fitness for all levels. We mostly do compound workouts, which are our workouts that work multiple muscle groups at the same time, as well as boot camps.”

He said they have six boot camps coming up, on May 23, June 13, June 27, July 25 and August 15.

If people really want to achieve their desired results,

Romel said, they have to be realistic with their expectations and how long it will take to get to where they want to be.

In fact, he said, helping people manage their expectations is one of the hardest parts of his job.

“Some of the pressures I would say come from the unrealistic expectations people tend to come to you with, like expecting to lose 50 pounds in two months, expecting to lose weight without being consistent with coming to class or eating healthy, not actually trying when they are working out, finding everything to complain about. Keeping people motivated, just always trying to find the words to keep people encouraged, (is a challenge),” he said.

Romel offers this advice to people looking to get in shape: “Stay motivated, stay consistent, give it your all only when you stop trying you fail. Just keep pushing beyond your limits and trust the process.”

The Greek God Fitness brand will soon be expanding, he said.

Romel will be moving from Goodman’s Bay Park to a studio in the JEMS Plaza upstairs on Eneas Street from 5am to 9pm, which he said will enable him to help many more people meet their fitness goals.

Going native with guilt-free frozen treats

I

f you like your desserts fruity and frozen, and without that dollop of guilt, then Melissa Darville and Elvis Percentie may just have what you’re looking for. The duo successfully launched their unique sorbet selection under the name Shiver Bahamas five years ago and have since been going from strength to strength. And it turns out, childhood experiences were the key to that success.

Melissa said both she and her business partner grew up climbing trees and eating native fruit as kids. She grew up right here in Nassau and in Long Island, while he spent his childhood in Harbour Island.

But comparing experiences, they discovered a shared love of indigenous fruits like soursop, mango, passion fruit and tamarind.

“My great grandmother made homemade ice cream and I have always heard stories of how everyone came to her on Sundays for their scoop,” she told Tribune Weekend.

When it came to starting their own dessert company, Melissa and Elvis decided to go beyond the traditional ice cream route and offer their customers a guilt-free indulgence instead.

For that, as her business partner remarked, they needed to go back to the drawing board and decide to not just sell frozen treats

but actually make their own products.

“We tested gelato (Italian dessert) and ice cream, then tried sorbet using tamarind. Instantly, we knew it was a hit. Everyone loves it

– Bahamians, Caribbeans and tourists,” said Melissa.

To make it a guilt-free treat, the Shiver sorbet (also known as “sherbet”) is vegan – meaning without dairy ingredients – with no preservatives and boasting all real fruit.

Melissa and Elvis are giving shops and vendors free custom-made freezers filled with Shiver products to introduce the dessert throughout New Providence’s communities. Their best-seller right now is the four-ounce single serving sorbet cup with the spoon-in-the-lid technology.

These cups are available in five flavours, including the popular tamarind and mango.

“When you first taste Shiver it’s exactly like the fruit. We took the goodness of the indigenous fruits and merged it with the art of Italian sorbetto. Nothing leaves our site unless it’s excellent.

We pride ourselves in good business practices which starts with product quality. We aim to have real relationships and conversations with our clients.

We talk and find out their needs; how can Shiver help them with their goals or issues.

We (shape) ourselves according to feedback from clients; it’s listening to customers that tailored our recipes and business choices,” said Melissa.

They’ve found success providing treats for weddings and other events, and to the hotels.

“Each time we deliver to the loading dock at Baha Mar we say ‘Thank you, Lord’ and we are grateful. Shiver has already exceeded our expectations. We have moved the goal posts several times in the last five and a half years. For now our goal is to become readily available nationally. We would like to move into export and give the world a taste of what the Bahamas can produce,” said Melissa.

Island House ‘brings film festival home’ Oscar winner ‘Parasite’ and local productions in the spotlight

outh Korea’s history-making film “Parasite” and special features to celebrate the strength and resilience of the Bahamian people will define this year’s Island House Film Festival.

This is the fourth year the movie event is being held, and the Island House team wanted to make sure “to bring the festival back home”.

According to Anja Allen, one of the Island House managers and organisers, each day of the festival will feature a special Bahamian segment to highlight the stellar work done by the local film community.

This includes a Bahamianthemed reception and a special screening of several short films called “Bahamian Short Cuts”.

“This notable event includes five locally produced short films. It’s about one and a half hours to twos hours of really great content. It will be followed by the full-length feature ‘Foxy Ladies’ by Clarence Rolle,” said Ms Allen. “Foxy Ladies” is a romantic comedy that takes a look at the struggle between couples for control in a relationship.

Another highlight is the documentary “Bahamas Strong” produced by Neville Smith which highlights Hurricane

Dorian and its impact on the country.

“It’s a quite striking internal perspective After the screening we will have a panel discussion about the film and also about another film, ‘Paradise Rediscovered’, produced by a filmmaker from the US Virgin Islands which tells a similar story about that country and its recovery after a storm hit them a few years ago,” said Ms Allen.

Additionally, influencer Kerel Pinder, who will be joined by other creatives, will present a segment on creative careers in the Bahamas.

Beyond the local content, the festival will also include a strong combination of tough and more light-hearted fare of international cinema.

One of the biggest draws is the showing of the runaway hit “Parasite”. The South Korean movie swept the Academy Awards this year, winning four Oscars including Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best International Feature Film, and Best Picture – a first for a foreign language movie. “ ‘Parasite’ is a movie that was so quirky that we were hesitant to bring in for our regular run when it first came out and we decided to wait for the festival, and then it blew up

“Clemency” and every one wanted to see it, so we are thrilled to bring it,” said Ms Allen.

Another highlight will be the documentary “Biggest Little Farm”, which tells the story of a couple’s success and failures as they work to develop a sustainable farm in Los Angeles.

“It has gotten a lot of acclaim and is very relevant for the Bahamas now, given the push for small backyard farming here,” said Ms Allen.

Other movies to look out for are “Clemency” about a female death row prison warden struggling with the demands of her job, starring Alfred Woodard, and “Greed” a satirical story of a self-made British billionaire, starring Steve Coogan.

The Island House Film Festival is an independent, non-competitive film festival in the Bahamas. It celebrates and focuses on films and filmmakers that emerge from the

Caribbean region, celebrating Bahamian premieres of international, regional and local narrative films and documentaries. Panels and workshops that educate and inspire creativity amongst the Bahamian population, as well as placing a strong focus on educational outreach programmes are features of the festival, which seeks to expand the film industry in the region.

This year’s festival takes place from March 26 to 29.

• “The Biggest Little Farm” The documentary follows two dreamers and a dog on an odyssey to bring harmony to both their lives and the land. When the barking of their beloved dog Todd leads to an eviction notice from their tiny Los Angeles apartment, John and Molly Chester make a choice that takes them out of the city and onto 200 acres in the foothills of Ventura County, naively endeavouring to build one of the most diverse farms of its kind in complete coexistence with nature.

The land they’ve chosen, however, is utterly depleted of nutrients and suffering from a brutal drought.

The film chronicles eight years of daunting work and idealism as they attempt to create the utopia they seek, planting 10,000 orchard trees and over 200 different crops, and bringing in animals of every kind – including an unforgettable pig named Emma and her best friend, Greasy the rooster.

Alfre Woodard stars as Bernadine Williams, a death row prison warden whose job has taken a psychological toll on her. Inspired by a true story, “Clemency” offers an insightful look at its wrenching subject matters. Also starring Danielle Brooks, “Taystee” on the Netflix original series “Orange Is the New Black”.

• “Portrait of A Lady on Fire” Marianne, a painter, is commissioned to paint a wedding portrait of Héloïse, a young woman who has just left the convent in this French historical drama. Set in France in the late 18th century, this tale of a forbidden affair between an aristocrat and a painter has won numerous international awards, including a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film and the Palme d’Or at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival.

• “Greed” Greed tells the story of selfmade British billionaire Sir Richard McCreadie (Steve Coogan), whose retail empire is in crisis. eauty is all around us in the Bahamas, on land and in the sea. But many of us are too busy with everyday life to pause and really see and enjoy the astonishing sights that surround us. Â The Hog Island lighthouse (now Paradise Island) was built by the Imperial Lighthouse Service in 1817. It is 69 feet tall, with a 13-mile visible range and a five-second pulse.

Is Friday the 13th really unlucky?

I

t is a day that only comes around once every few months, but for many superstitious people Friday the 13th (not the horror movie franchise) is a day to hide away and pray the evil spirits leave them alone.

The irrational fear of the number 13 has been given a scientific name – “triskaidekaphobia” – and a fear of Friday the 13th is called paraskevidekatriaphobia (Jeopardy fans, take note!).

Some legends say the fear of Friday the 13th comes from the story of the Last Supper with Jesus and his disciples, where there where 13 individuals present in the Upper Room on the 13th of Nisan Maundy Thursday, the night before Jesus’ death on Good Friday. Another theory refers to Judas, who would go on to betray Jesus, being the 13th person sitting at the table.

Another suggested origin of the superstition goes back to Friday 13, October 1307, the date on which Philip IV of France had hundreds of the Knights Templar arrested, charged with heresy, and had many of them burned at the stake. But this myth may not have come about until the 20th century, casting doubt on the veracity of the story.

Regardless of its origin, the ominous date strikes fear in the hearts many, including Bahamians.

“I am not superstitious per se,” Tribune reader Tameka said, “but on Friday the 13th I do find myself being a little bit extra cautious...like I try to limit where I go and watch my back. I mean, I am not saying

Thomas, however, finds all the to-do surrounding the date to be silly.

“I mean what is the hoopla surrounding Friday the 13th?

It makes no sense; It’s just a day like any other day to me. I don’t get these people who are all about numbers being lucky or unlucky. Good and bad things can happen everyday,” he said.

Lauren, however, is one of those people who is convinced

that the date is to be feared due to personal experiences.

“My grandmother was in a freak car accident one year, my dog ate a bone that got stuck, and we had to take him to the vet one time, so yeah, I don’t play with Friday the 13th; I am a bit paranoid about that day.

“I know (today) I am going home after work and staying in; better safe than sorry,” she said.

Liz, on the other hand, said her

grandmother always believed the number 13 to be lucky, and Friday the 13th even more so.

“Good things always happened to her on that day; she would win a raffle or get good news... and I believe in carrying on her belief in 13,” she said.

While Friday the 13th is considered a day of bad luck in most Western societies, many countries have their own versions of unlucky dates.

In Spanish-speaking countries, for example, it’s Tuesday the 13th which is believed to be the day of bad luck. The Greeks also consider Tuesday, and especially the 13th, an unlucky day. The fall of Constantinople to the Fourth Crusade occurred on Tuesday, April 13, 1204, and the Fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans happened on Tuesday May 29, 1453.

In Italian popular culture, meanwhile, Friday the 17th is considered unlucky. The origin of this belief could be traced to the writing of number 17 in Roman numerals: XVII. By shuffling the digits of the number one can easily get the word VIXI – “I have lived” – implying death in the present, an omen of bad luck.

While many certainly consider all these superstitions hogwash, they are no laughing matter. National Geographic reported in 2004 that it’s been estimated up to $800 or $900 million is lost in business on Friday the 13th.

Review:

Vin Diesel in the bruising ‘Bloodshot’ bloodshot | 109 minutes

I

t might be too harsh to recommend practicing social distancing with the new Vin Diesel movie “Bloodshot,” but I wouldn’t want to shake its hand, either.

David S F Wilson’s film comes not from Marvel or DC but the pages of Valiant Comics. Its central character,

GUY PEARCE, left, and Vin Diesel in a scene from “Bloodshot.” (Graham Bartholomew/Sony/Columbia Pictures via AP) a former soldier named Ray Garrison (Diesel), is brought back to life with nanotechnology that gives him superhuman strength and the ability to immediately be healed by microscopic robots. He awakes to a muscleman’s dream, lifting enormous barbells and trading a punching bag for a concrete pillar. What could be better?

Well, the downsides include the haunting memory of the murder of Garrison’s wife and the eventual realisation that his creator, Dr Emil Harting (Guy Pearce, classing up the joint), can turn him off with a switch. But when he’s in action, Garrison is something like a hulking Terminator who rapidly reassembles when shot or exploded, just without the sunglasses or snappy catch phrases.

There’s a dull thud to “Bloodshot,” a bruising action movie that can’t equal its brawn with brains. It’s a high-tech “Frankenstein” that cobbles together the sci-fi concepts of various previous movies before it. Wilson, a visual effects expert making his directorial debut, films the actions sequences in a vague, disorienting blur, sometimes slowing things down in shots of grim brutalism. One, in a darkened tunnel, is shot amid a crimson glow and a clouds of powdery white (from a flour truck).

Diesel doesn’t bring any dramatic heft

to the part but he makes a mean bullet of a man.

“Bloodshot” is, at least, a little more interesting than it initially appears. It begins to reflect back on itself, questing what’s real and what isn’t. Pearce’s Harting turns out to be as much a film director as a mad scientist, compiling digital worlds and plot lines for his creations. (”It was all a simulation” has officially replaced “It was all a dream” in the movies.) And there is somewhere in here a salient metaphor for the plight of soldiers returning home from war with prosthetic limbs and forced to make for themselves strange new lives.

Along the way, a few actors give it a pulse. Eiza González, as the alsoenhanced KT, is compelling enough that the movie feels like it should have gravitated from Garrison to her. Lamorne Morris just about steals the movie as the brilliant but goofy coder Wilfred Wigans.

“Bloodshot” is just smart enough to be more than trash, and just trashy enough to be less than smart. It will do fine if you’re looking for a lesser simulation of a good movie.

Commitment keeps Buttons Bridal Show going for 32nd year

f there is one thing engaged couples attending the upcoming Buttons Bridal & Formal Wear Show can take away from the experience is that unwavering commitment to a long-term goal pays off.

This is the lesson Tommy Stubbs, founder and executive producer of the popular bridal expo, has learned over the last 32 years.

Set for March 22nd at the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar, this year’s show will showcase the latest wedding trends, the newest vendor innovations, and offer attendees over $30,000 in prizes.

Through all the ups and downs, the challenges and triumphs, the economic downturns and hurricanes, Mr Stubbs and his team have kept the show going for over 30 years. They did so by remaining steadfast in their vision to create an avenue where new wedding businesses can be launched and existing vendors can expand their customer base.

“We have to give Tommy Stubbs credit for most of the success of the Bahamas Bridal Show,” said Nicole Henderson-Smith, who joined the show as a high school model before becoming its mistress of ceremonies.

“There are not many people like him. He’s talented, persistent and resilient.”

Mr Stubbs, reluctant to toot his own horn, said the show’s supporting cast are truly the ones that have kept things going over the years.

“I’ve been blessed over three decades to have had great support from hundreds of volunteers and

hard-working business owners who trust me to lead them as they strive every day to succeed and help others live their dreams,” he told Tribune Weekend.

When Mr Stubbs started that event in 1990 he made a promise to help local

businesses reach more clients and to encourage brides- and grooms-to-be to shop at home, here in the Bahamas, for their weddings and other special events.

It’s a promise he continues to keep.

More than 50 businesses will assemble in the Grand Hyatt ballroom next Sunday.

“All of our exhibitors are deserving of every possible chance of earning your patronage,” said Mr Stubbs. “It’s the main reason they participate – to meet you, speak with you

and offer you their services, products, talents and to play an important part in your life.”

He added: “When you see the look of people’s faces while exhibiting, modelling, or working at the show, you can’t help but want to produce another show. That’s what keeps me going every year. If I could bring happiness to hundreds on one day of the year, then I’ve done my part.”

During this year’s expo, Buttons Bridal & Formal Wear will present the “One Lifetime” show, featuring newlyweds Donae and Dominic Duncombe as this year’s poster couple. They will make an appearance on the main stage during the fashion show segment.

“Brides and grooms-to-be, their families and friends are in for a spectacular show,” said Makeva Wallace, the show’s coordinator and fashion show choreographer, who is also responsible for selecting all of the gowns and tuxedos for a theatrical fashion show.

“Some come to the show for their share of $30,000 in prizes from our vendors, some come for the free food and drinks, others come for the thrilling wedding demonstrations, but everybody comes to see the fashion show,” she said.

Some of this year’s exhibitors include Beyond the Décor, Personal Touch Weddings and Couture Designs.

A constellation of beauty | 12 contestants vie for ‘Galaxy’ title

he Bahamas Galaxy Pageant is back and looking for queens to crown who possess not only beauty and style, but also embody cultural appreciation and community service.

The 2020 pageant, which takes place this Saturday at the University of the Bahamas’ Performing Arts Centre at 7pm, will showcase 12 contestants in four divisions.

Andrea Knott, pageant director, said Bahamas Galaxy has evolved so much since it first started in 2009. She and her team members are proud of their accomplishments when it comes to the training and mentoring of young ladies in areas such as interview and social skills, etiquette and deportment.

“We have had successes in bringing back the international Galaxy crown to the Bahamas: Halle Bowe, Miss Pre-Teen Galaxy 2013, and Alexis Dean, Jr, Miss Galaxy 2014. There were also placements: Shante McAlpin, third place in the Miss division; Kendicia Clarke, third runner-up in the Junior Miss division, and Brinika Burrows, first place in the Little Miss division,” said Mrs Knott.

The Galaxy programme, she said, focuses on educational seminars and workshops aimed at equipping the contestants with the necessary tools to strengthen their body, mind and spirit and to improve their life skills.

“In its entirety, the pageant affords each lady the opportunity to grow and advance her personal and career goals while being a role model in her community. Our ladies become actively involved with outreach and community service programmes. My team and I are so proud to see the progress of those young ladies who had selfconfidence and speaking issues,” she said.

Crowning night, will see the Miss and Miss Teen category contestants compete in segments such as: interview, photogenic, evening gown, fashion wear, and swimsuit.

Junior Miss and Miss Pre-Teen contestants will go head-to-head in: interview, photogenic, evening gown, and fashion wear. Divisions and ages include: Miss (ages 19 to 27); Miss Teen (ages 15 to 18); Junior Miss (ages 12 to 14), and Miss Pre-Teen (ages 9 to 11).

Other divisions offered are: Ms (ages 28 to 35), Mrs (ages 19 to 35), and Little Miss (ages 6 to 8).

The 2020 pageant cycle started in February with a church service at Golden Gates World Outreach Ministries, followed by a lunch at Outback Steakhouse. In the weeks since, the contestants participated in an orientation session, a half-day seminar, an all white party, and the preliminary rounds of competition.

Prior to the finale, the Miss and Miss Teen contestants were already scored by the judges in the interview, photogenic and swimsuit segments.

In addition to the fashion wear and evening gown competition, the audience can also look forward to a “spectacular” opening dance on Saturday, said Mrs Knott.

She said none of this would have been possible without the support of her team: Assistant Director Jessica Knott, Ferrice Kemp, Christine M Sweeting and Lamech Burrows.

Karin says: “I love the mint colour on her and the way it’s draped (it’s open in the back FYI). I’m not sure about the mixing of the different fabrics on her chest. The big inserted triangle almost looks like a bib, or like a piece of leftover material that needed to be tacked on.”

Cara says: “I agree. I really don’t like how the bodice part looks to be out of place with the rest of the dress. I don’t have a problem with the rest of the outfit. Her hair and subtle make up are nice enough, but the top of the dress is a bit weird.”

Karin says: “Clearly another 80s glam inspired gown with the big shoulders. I know it’s an intentionally retro, geometric look, but to me it still looks dated. Maybe if it had been styled differently – different hair and accessories – it could have been really pretty.”

Cara says: “I think that the split is the first thing that throws me off; it’s very dated.

I just don’t like it. And she looks extra plain and dull with the ponytail. I wish she had worn accessories; that may have helped.”

And there is just too much going on with the colours and the pattern, and then she’s wearing a matching shirt on top of this confusing mess. Cara says: “Way too much going on; she is giving me head a headache. Much too much print, and then you add another print under the jacket... agggh. This is the worst of the fashion week for me in a long time.”

Karin says: “That is a whole lot of material. It almost overpowers her, but I still like it for some weird reason.

I love when we see such different styles on the red carpet. The main quibble I have is that the circle pattern doesn’t match up every time.

A good designer could have surely fixed that.”

Cara says: “It’s just all to much: too much fabric, too much of the print, and then the weird way the skirts fall between the waist and the knees. I just don’t get it. Not cute in any way, sorry to say.”

Karin says: “I mean, she looks good and a regal as a Grecian princess, but it’s basically just some bits of flimsy pink fabric thrown over her body and fastened with a silver brooch.

It doesn’t seem like it was actually ‘designed’. The whole thing looks like it could come apart at any moment.”

Cara says: “This dress is one hiccup or sneeze away from being a major wardrobe malfunction. She sure has a lot of confidence in that two-way tape. The dress is OK, but she almost like an Egyptian mummy trying to be hot in the afterlife. Not really feeling it.”

Will her curiosity and subsequent amateur investigation point to murder?

The book is described as “a story filled with intrigue, romance, scandal and mystery that will keep your mind on it long after you’ve read the last page”.

This is the sequel to “Dangerous Devotion”, which posed the question, if your relationship was threatened, what lengths would you go to in order to save it? Facing imminent danger and fierce opposition to love a second time around, Violet and Gordon seek a new life in Gordon’s homeland of Scotland, thousands of miles away from where they had lived in the Bahamas, but trouble catches up with them in their little loch side cottage. In the meantime, back in Nassau an unscrupulous attorney appears on

the scene, along with a crooked realtor. What they do and the extent they would go to leads to a shocking ending.

Readers on both sides of pond are loving the series so far.

An Amazon UK reader gave Book One a five-star review, saying it’s an easy read, but compulsive, with an intriguing story line...”it brought alive both the atmosphere of the Bahamas and Scotland.”

“And my first published short story was about a fictitious dentist who met an untimely death,” she said.

Dive into a new experience

BREEF offers free snorkelling for locals

lthough the Bahamas is sold to visitors as the best place to enjoy beautiful turquoise waters and encounter colourful marine life, those of us who live here seldom get the chance to really appreciate the islands’ natural environment.

Many Bahamians go to the beach to sunbathe or to hold outdoor family gatherings and other parties – all without ever once setting foot in the water. Take for instance the participants of the Bahamas Reef Environment Educational Foundation’s (BREEF) programmes or swimming activities. Some 50 percent had never swam before, and had certainly never indulged in any snorkelling.

Snorkelling, an activity always marketed as a tourist experience, offers a unique experience which many locals

are missing out on, even though its right on their doorstep, so to speak.

For those who have always been curious about encountering the wide variety of marine life that dwells in our oceans, but so far haven’t had the chance to explore, BREEF is offering a free snorkelling event tomorrow morning. It will take place off Saunders Beach from 10am to 1pm.

It is open to kids ages eight and up and adults. Participants will be shown how to snorkel in shallow water and learn about marine conservation and fish identification.

BREEF is providing everything needed for the activity, including all snorkel gear. Participants are only asked to bring refillable water bottles and sun screen to the beach.

“It’s a chance for everyone to connect with our marine

environment. When you connect with the environment you want to protect it more and that is the ultimate goal for this event. We need to get everyone in the water first to

see our coral reefs,” said Allison Longley, education and outreach officer at BREEF. Allison, who has been swimming for more than two

decades, said exploring beaches all around the islands has given her great pleasure over the years. She said there is so much beauty to behold

underwater and that includes the coral reefs.

“Most people think that coral reefs are everywhere and that is actually not the case, because only one percent of the ocean floor is covered in coral reef, so it is quite barren. The Bahamas holds 35 percent of all Caribbean reef that we need to protect,” she said.

However, many Bahamians rarely get a chance to behold the beauty of the coral reefs first-hand.

“If parents do not swim then they won’t take their children near the water. The child feeds off of that fear and they just never have the opportunity to experience this,” said Allison.

“These are the things that we try to teach to close that gap. We take them all around the island to snorkel and talk about marine conservation. During the Summer we will host adult snorkelling on the weekends to teach adults how to swim.”

These activities are part of BREEF’s recovery efforts post Hurricane Dorian.

“Teaching everyone how to swim, because it is a life skill that everyone should have.”

Allison is encouraging anyone who has a desire to swim and snorkel to attend the event.

“The nice part about the Bahamas is that we have these beautiful clear waters. And coral reef is found anywhere between 25 feet of water, so you don’t need to go to the depths to see beautiful corals. They are located right off of our beaches,” she said.

Participants will learn ‘Snorkelling 101’ during the event.

“You start in the shallow; you make sure your mask is on properly. When you start out, you start out with just your face in the water. You don’t have to lift your head to breathe because the gear is doing that for you. You do this in increments and it is such a beautiful sight to see,” she said.

The Bahamian agouti Forgotten facts | Paul C Aranha

I

n 1962, Michael Craton published “The History of the Bahamas”.

In 1992, he and Dr Gail Saunders published “Islanders in the Stream – Volume 1”, followed by “Volume 2” in 1998. Craton’s “A-Z of Bahamas Heritage” (2007) appears to be less well-known, but I find it a very good read, and portions of this article is taken from that book.

Craton described the agouti as a large, indigenous rodent that inhabits East Plana Cay (also called East French Cay), a tiny island between Acklins and Mayaguana. Apart from the agoutis, the Plana Cays are uninhabited, though farmers from Acklins grow crops on the West cay, where they have erected huts to sleep in while attending their crops.

Nobody knows how this colony of agoutis found its way to East Plana Cay, but their existence was discovered about 40 years ago and it is believed that there are more than 10,000 of them on that tiny cay. It is said that they may be the creature that Columbus described a “small barkless dog”.

Reports differ as to whether they are diurnal or nocturnal animals, but the Bahamian agouti is said to be nocturnal.

They shelter from the sun during the day, and forage at night, obtaining all the moisture they require from the vegetation on the cay.

The term “agouti” designates several rodent species of the genus Dasyprocta. They are related to guinea pigs and look quite similar, but are larger and have longer legs.

They weigh between five and 1 lbs and are 15 to 30 inches in length, with short, hairless tails. The species vary considerably in colour, being brown, reddish, dull orange, greyish or blackish, but typically

first toe is very small. Their molar teeth have cylindrical crowns, with several islands and a single lateral fold of enamel.

Active and graceful in their movements, their pace is either a kind of trot, or a series of springs, following one another so rapidly as to look

like a gallop. They take readily to water, in which they swim well.

Agoutis give birth to litters of two to four young, after a gestation period of three months. Some species have two litters a year, in May and October, while others breed year-round. Young are born into burrows lined with leaves, roots and hair. They are well developed at birth and may be up and eating within an hour.

Fathers are barred from the nest while the young are very small, but the parents bond for the rest of their lives. They can live for as long as 20 years, a remarkably long time for a rodent.

When feeding, agoutis sit on their hind legs and hold food between their fore paws. They may gather in groups of up to 100 to feed. They are regarded as one of the few species (along with macaws) that can open Brazil nuts without tools, mainly thanks to their strength and exceptionally sharp teeth.

literary lives – William S Burroughs Sir Christopher Ondaatje writes about the incredulous life of the American writer, and sometime visual artist, a primary figure of the “Beat Generation” who had a major influence on postmodernist literature and culture.

W

illiam Burroughs was born on February 5, 1914 into a wealthy St Louis, Missouri family. His grandfather was the inventor and founder of the Burroughs adding machine and Burroughs Corporation. Burroughs’ parents sold the rights to his grandfather’s invention before the 1929 stock market crash for $200,000 – equivalent to approximately $3 million in today’s funds. In 1932 he left home to attend Harvard University, studying English and graduating in 1936. He continued studying archaeology and ethnology as a postgraduate, and later attended medical school in Vienna.

On graduation his parents gave him a monthly allowance of $200 – out of proceeds from the sale of the Burroughs adding machine. It was a substantial sum in those days and guaranteed his survival for the next 25 years. It allowed him the freedom to live where he wanted and not to have a regular job. Becoming bored with educational studies he moved in a circle of exiles and homosexuals and travelled in Europe. He met Ilse Klapper – a Jewish woman fleeing Austria’s Nazi government. Burroughs married her, allowing her to get a visa to the United States, after which she divorced

Burroughs. They remained friends.

His parents worried about his mental health – especially after he severed the joint of his little left finger to impress a man with whom he had become infatuated.

He enlisted in the US Army in 1942 to serve during World War II, but was turned down by the Office of Strategic Services and Navy. He then held a variety of jobs eventually moving to New York City in 1943 where he became friends with Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg – two writers who would become principal figures in the Beat Movement.

In 1944 Burroughs began living with Joan Vollmer Adams in an apartment they shared with Jack Kerouac and Kerouac’s first wife, Edie Parker. Kerouac and Burroughs got into serious trouble with the law for failing to report a murder involving their friend Lucien Carr who had killed David Kammerer, repelling Kammerer’s constant sexual advances. The situation inspired Burroughs and Kerouac to write a fictional novel titled “And the Hippos Were Boiled in Their Tanks” – which they finished in 1945.

They found no publisher and the manuscript was not published until November 2008

by Grove Press and Penguin Books.

Burroughs began using morphine at this time. His addiction would last, on and

He became emotionally involved with Joan Vollmer who was also addicted to Benzedrine. Burroughs sold heroin in Greenwich Village to support his habit and was arrested for forging

a narcotics prescription.

He was released but had to return to St Louis under his parents’ care. Burroughs and Vollmer lived together but never married. Their son William S Burroughs Jr was born in 1947.

To escape possible detention, Burroughs, Vollmer and their son (together with Vollmer’s daughter from her first marriage) fled to Mexico in 1949. Their relationship floundered. Burroughs began to pursue other men,

and Vollmer began to drink heavily. Burroughs then boasted that he and Vollmer had a “William Tell” act. She put a highball glass on her head, and Burroughs, aiming at the glass, shot Vollmer in the head, killing her immediately.

The killing was ruled a “culpable homicide” and Burroughs was jailed. Two witnesses however agreed to testify that the gun had fired accidentally while Burroughs was checking to see if it was loaded. The trial was continuously delayed, and Burroughs spent his time writing the novel “Queer”.

In the end Burroughs fled Mexico illegally and returned to the US. He was convicted in absentia and given a two-year suspended sentence.

Burroughs described Vollmer’s death as pivotal in his life.

“I would never have become a writer but for Joan’s death ... I live with the constant threat of possession, and a constant need to escape from possession, from control ... the death of Joan brought me in contact with the invader, the Ugly Spirit, and manoeuvred me into a lifelong struggle, in which I have no choice except to write my way out.”

Before Vollmer died Burroughs had almost finished his first novel, “Junkie: Confessions of a Unredeemed Drug Addict” (later published as Junkie) – written at the urging of Allen Ginsberg and published in 1953 under Burroughs’ pen name William Lee. In 1953 Burroughs seemed to leave an aimless life. He spent some time with his parents in Palm Beach, and with Allen Ginsberg in New York City. Ginsberg refused Burroughs’ amorous advances, so instead he travelled to Rome to meet another friend, Alan Ansen, on a trip financed by his parents’ continuing support. Bored

he received the manuscript piecemeal – in sections of no particular order. When Burroughs saw the print galleys he liked them better than his original, and it was published in this random manner.

Burroughs received a $3,000 advance from Grove Press, and used the money (equivalent to $26,000 in today’s funds) to buy drugs. Life magazine published a cover story as part of a feature on the growing Beat literary movement.

“Naked Lunch” was Burroughs’ first venture into a nonlinear style. After the publication, Burroughs was exposed to Brion Gysin’s “cut-up” technique at the Beat Hotel in Paris. Gysin was a restless multifaceted English artist who worked in painting, sound, and poetry.

Thereafter Burroughs began slicing up phrases and works to create new sentences.

“I didn’t think I had ever seen a painting until I saw the painting of Brion Gysin.”

Burroughs and Gysin would develop a long relationship that revolved around artworks and “cutup” techniques. “Naked Lunch” was in fact described as a book that could be cut into at any point – although not considered to be science fiction.

“Naked Lunch” slowly became notorious across Europe and the United States. After the 1962 publication in the US “Naked Lunch” was prosecuted as obscene in Massachusetts, followed by other states, but later ruled “not obscene” in 1966 by the Massachusetts Judicial Court, because of evidence received to defend the book. It had received support from not just members of the counterculture of the 1960s, but also literary critics like Mary McCarthy – the American novelist (The Group) and critic. The case remains the last obscenity trial in the United States against a work of literature.

JOAN Vollner was fatally shot

by Burroughs in a “William Tell” act gone wrong. She was 28 at the time of her death. with Rome and Ansen, and inspired by Paul Bowles’ writings, he headed for the Tangier International Zone where he rented a room and started writing a book he labelled “Interzone”.

In Tangier and the Moroccan culture Burroughs found a city where drugs were freely available and he could pursue his other amorous adventures legally. He spent 1954 and the next four years

writing the fictional work that would become “Naked Lunch”, as well as other articles – which he sent to his literary agent Allen Ginsberg. Nothing was published until 1989 when “Interzone”, a collection of short stories, was published.

Heavily under the influence of a marijuana confection known as majoun and a German-made opioid called Eukodol, Burroughs immersed himself in his writings – which eventually were sorted, rescued, and typed

by Ginsberg and Kerouac, who had travelled to Tangier in 1957, and who helped edit and arrange what became “The Naked Lunch” (Paris, 1959), and the US “Naked Lunch” (1962). Excerpts from “Naked Lunch” were first published in the US in 1958.

After realising that Tangier, because of its political unrest and the criminals

with whom he had become involved, had become dangerous in 1959, Burroughs moved to a small rundown hotel in the Latin Quarter of Paris. He was still looking for a publisher for “Naked Lunch”. He went to Paris to have talks with Ginsberg and with Maurice Girodias of Olympia Press. However, a criminal charge implicating Burroughs for importing narcotics into France caught up with him in Paris. This made “Naked Lunch” interesting to Girodias who had published controversial English language novels in France.

It was during the impending narcotics case that Girodias published “Naked Lunch”. Its publication helped Burroughs get a suspended sentence, since a literary was a respected profession in France. In haste, Girodias only gave Burroughs ten days to prepare his manuscript, and

The collection of manuscripts that produced “Naked Lunch” also contributed to parts of Burroughs’ later works: “The Soft Machine” (1961); “The Ticket That Exploded” (1962); “The Wild Boys” (1971); “Exterminator!” (1973); “Cities of the Red Night” (1981); “Place of Dead Roads” (1983); “Queer” (1985), “The Western Lands’ (1987); and “My Education: A Book of Dreams” (1995). These novels make extensive use of the “cut-up” technique that influenced all of Burroughs’ subsequent fiction.

“This ‘cut-up’ method, because of its random or mechanical basis for text generation, combined with the possibilities of mixing in text written by other writers, de-emphasises the traditional role of the writer as creator or originator of a string of words, while simultaneously exalting the importance of the writer’s sensibility as an editor. In 1960 Burroughs left Paris for London to visit Dr Dent, a well-known English doctor who headed a reputedly painless heroin withdrawal treatment using the drug apomorphine. This apomorphine cure was also used to treat alcoholism, although it was criticised as being nothing more than a straightforward aversion therapy. Following his first cure Burroughs wrote a detailed appreciation of apomorphine to The British Journal of Addiction.

The letter is appended to some editions of the “Naked Lunch”.

Burroughs worked in London for six years, travelling to the United States several times – once

taking his son Billy to the Lexington Narcotics Farm and Prison after Burroughs’ son had been convicted of prescription fraud in Florida. When Burroughs left London he thought he had only a small drug habit, leaving without any narcotics because he knew he would be searched thoroughly by the US customs on arrival.

He recalled that he went through the most painful two months of opiate withdrawal while accompanying his son through trial and sentencing, and making sure he entered a reputable rehabilitation hospital.

Burroughs supported himself and his addiction by writing for small literary presses. He also covered the 1968 Democratic National Convention for Esquire magazine with Jean Genet, John Sack, and Terry Southern.

Despite his personal turmoil he managed to complete “The Last Words of Dutch Shultz” (1969) and “The Wild Boys” (1971).

In 1974 Allen Ginsberg, worried about Burroughs, got a contract for his friend to teach creative writing at the City College in New York. Burroughs battled through the withdrawal pains from heroin and accepted the job. But he hated the work and only lasted one semester. He rented an apartment nicknamed “The Bunker” on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and lived there until 1981 when

the affordable rents were doubled. Although needing funds desperately he turned down a teaching job at the University of Buffalo for $15,000 a semester – a lot of money in those days. Luckily for Burroughs he met the young twenty-one-yearold James Grauerholz – a bookseller and Beat Generation devotee, who organised reading tours for Burroughs that helped finance him and raised his public profile. He began to associate with leading cultural celebrities like Andy Warhol, John Giorno and Susan Sontag – entertaining them at his flat in “The Bunker”.

Burroughs’ son Billy died in 1980 in Florida. He had published two novels “Speed” and “Kentucky Ham”, and survived a liver transplant in 1976. But he was a heavy drinker and suffered complications after he stopped taking transplant rejection drugs. His body was found near the side of a Florida highway.

Burroughs became addicted to heroin again in 1979. Cheap heroin was easily obtainable on the Lower East Side in New York, and he was helped by well-intentioned admirers and fans who visited him in his “Bunker” flat.

He remained addicted to the drug until he died while on a methadone maintenance programme in 1997.

In an introduction to Last Words: The Final Journals of

William S Burroughs, James Grauerholz states that part of his job managing Burroughs’ reading tours was to deal with New York’s underworld to secure drugs for the author.

Burroughs spent his final years in Lawrence, Kansas.

“The thing I like about Kansas is that it’s not nearly as violent, and it’s a helluva lot cheaper.”

By the early 1980s he was a counterculture icon. He was inducted into The American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters in 1983, and in 1984 he signed a seven-book literary contract with Viking Press. He collaborated with an entourage of several 1980 performers, and played a character based on a short story he published in “Exterminator!”

(1973) called “The Priest”.

In 1991 David Cronenberg adapted “Naked Lunch” into a feature film to critical acclaim. He also developed a painting technique where he created abstract compositions by shooting paint cans in front of blank surfaces with a shotgun. Until his last years he prolifically created visual art, since featured in more than fifty international galleries including the Royal Academy of Arts, Pompidou Centre, Guggenheim Museum, Los Angeles County Museum, and Whitney Museum of American Art.

In June 1991 Burroughs underwent triple bypass surgery.

In the final decade of his life Burroughs became heavily involved in the chaos magic movement. He had a longstanding preoccupation with magic and the occult dating from his earliest childhood.

“In the magical universe there are no coincidences and there are no accidents. Nothing happens unless someone wills it to happen ... I believe that if you run into somebody in the street it’s for a reason.

Among primitive people they say that if someone was bitten by a snake he was murdered.

I believe that.

“There are no accidents in the world of magic.”

Burroughs was unwavering in his insistence that his writing had a magical purpose. Norman Mailer declared him to be “the only American writer who may be conceivably possessed by genius.”

Burroughs died on August 2, 1997 in Lawrence, Kansas from complications of a heart attack he had suffered the previous day. He was interred in the family plot in Bellefontaine Cemetery in St Louis, Missouri, with a marker bearing his full name and the epitaph “American Writer”. His grave lies to the right of the white granite obelisk of William Seward Burroughs I (1857-1895).

Doing the right thing

s I sit in my den thinking long and hard about the world and imaging what it must be like to become a prisoner in your home, like many of my Italian friends have become, my mind dwells on how difficult it must actually be to be stuck in your house, virtually all day, with just your family to keep you company, potentially for months. Our dogs would not mind one little.

When you think what goes on between people, between people and nature, and between people and animals, it is like an uncoordinated ballet with inadequate choreography. We do not look, we do not listen, and above all, we do not care.

Right now, hundreds of people are complaining about the precautions being taken because of the coronavirus.

They feel well, they are well, and they are strong, so why should they limit their movements? Even if they catch it, it will not affect them, they will throw it right off. Sure, they probably will. But what about the older family members they have, the dad with a heart condition, the mom with COPD? If the young strong guy catches it, it will not stop him, but he can, and will, pass it on.

We are a world of ‘self’ and ‘me’; we worry about ourselves – what we like, what we

CATS and dogs cannot spread the coronavirus don’t like. We do not wish to be stopped doing something we want to do and we will continue doing what is on our agenda without a thought about whom it might hurt.

This is a world that manages to place the inconvenient truth on the back burner, and most conveniently, to not hear it as it starts to boil over.

We treat most problems in the same manner. A quick glance over our shoulders as we walk away from the latest natural or man-made disaster taking place worldwide: rain forests being decimated, dolphins slaughtered, dogs eaten, live baby mice consumed, rivers overflowing, reefs dying, ice melting, and so the list of

natural and created atrocities continues. A quick fact check: ‘Does it directly affect me?’

Errr no. ‘OK, then walk on by!’

This coronavirus is one little step away from us all. If we are strong and resilient we will throw it off, but could easily cause somebody older or weaker to catch it.

We need to face all our responsibilities towards our selves, fellow humans, animals and to this fragile planet we inhabit, with utmost seriousness.

It is time to realise that everything that happens on this planet has direct or indirect impact on us and on our dayto-day existence.

The era of, ‘It’s not my problem’ has gone; we have become our brothers’ keeper and must be mindful or each other and of the condition the world is in. Coronavirus is one of many ills to befall us this century; it is one that is making much noise and rattles the sabre, so that we cannot ignore it, as hard as we try.

The one ray of light at the end of this rather dismal and at times frightening tunnel is that our pets cannot contract the virus. The World Health Organisation has reported that they are not at risk. This, for me, is a very positive side to the prospect of being cooped up at home. If it comes to that, we will at least have Chiefie,

The world has faced greater obstacles than the coronavirus in history, but has lacked the instant public reaction and the relentless reporting on social media. In the old days it took weeks, even months, for news to reach around the world. Now it’s one post away on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snap Chat and all the other social media platforms.

What is a blessing can also be a curse. Instant information, which may not always be accurate, can cause panic.

While I write this article I hear the steady flow of aircraft coming in to land at LPIA. I wonder how full they are, and how much longer they will continue to fly in, and how much longer the visitors be welcome. It is all up in the air, so to speak – no pun intended.

Meanwhile, preparation is not a bad thing. Be sure that you have a little extra at home for your pet: food, meds, treats. Those precautions can also extend to the humans in your home and life.

Being mindful and being prepared coupled with common sense and consideration for others will go a long way in keeping everybody safe and healthy.

Be grateful that Fido and Fluffy are safe from the coronavirus and that you can hug them all you like.
