rowing up can be confusing for children if they don’t have the correct information or guidance through uncomfortable and sometimes lifethreatening situations, said Teri M Bethel, author of “Courage to Overcome, Stories to Help Kids Grow Through Childhood Challenges”.

“Courage to Overcome” aims to show children that they need not give in to pressure or give up on themselves; it lets them know that with practical guidance and wisdom, they can overcome the obstacles in their way. Kids learn why being obedient to their parents’ and teachers’ advice can save them unnecessary hardship; why joining gangs and living like a thug ends in disaster; why you should not bully, and how to respond when bullied.

In a world rampant with sexual

abuse, the book shows children that it is not normal or acceptable for anyone to touch them inappropriately, the dangers of being sexually active as a youth, and how pregnancy brings hardship to teens and their families. Kids see why being respected is more important than being popular, how stealing and dishonesty have a short-term gain with long-term pain, and why a good education is vital for future success. Instead of turning to adults for help, many children turn to drugs, alcohol, or self-harm.

“Courage to Overcome” strives to let children know that they are valuable, and hurting themselves is never a good option.

Offering her remarks on the book, Rosalie Fawkes, a former teacher and executive director of the Bahamas’ YWCA, noted the need to explore other facets of a child’s development in addition to their educational development.

“Healthy eating, personal hygiene and bullying are only a few of the many topics that parents, guardians, and teachers will need to discuss with children as they

Her newest venture is the grand opening of a storefront for her publishing and marketing company, True Vine Publishing, now located in Stuart’s Plaza, Baillou Hill Road North. The official opening is tomorrow from 12noon to 4pm.

“In 2020, I had a meeting with my mentor, Pastor Delton Ellis, we spoke about my gifts and turning my passion into profit. For years, I helped close friends and mentees publish their books, start organisations and more, without a

cost. I realised I enjoyed pushing people into purpose and helping to make their dream a reality. After much prayer, researching and testing the market at the beginning of the COVID- 19 pandemic, I officially made the announcement and True Vine Publishing was no longer a dream, but a reality. I am excited and humbled to see what the Lord has done in such a short space of time. We have published a total of 35 books and counting,” said Felicia.

True Vine is a full-service publishing house and marketing company, inclusive of a gift shop. The team provides its customers with all of the services needed to bring their visions to life at one location.

“I wanted to go for a chic,

contemporary look. I designed the interior and my contractor New Wave Development, carpenter Edmond Jolly and family, brought the vision to life,” she said.

She said there are so many lessons she has learned, not only from her publishing experience, but from being business in general.

Felicia believes she’ll write a book about the process one day.

“True Vine Publishing and Marketing is more than a business for us, it is a ministry. Sometimes we can go from serving a customer

mature into adulthood,” she said.

Author and life development specialist at Purpose Unleashed Conrad L Jones described the book as a valuable and engaging tool, and said it is an easy read and “a simple life instruction manual.”

“These are not topics many adults feel comfortable addressing, but it is a great tool to give children to deter them from future slip-ups,” said Mrs Bethel “Too many children are agonising and they don’t know who to talk to or where to turn for help.

“Courage to Overcome” is available in Nassau at Logos Bookstore, in Governor’s Harbour, Eleuthera at the Office General, and in North Eleuthera at the Craft & Snack Place, and on Amazon in paperback and eBook formats.

Felicia is now in the process of preparing the launch the “Write that Book” master class tour. This class is designed to help aspiring writers finally write the book they’ve had inside them. The first stop on the tour is Grand Bahama, at the New Destiny Kingdom Centre, on March 19.

The second stop will be Eleuthera on April 2 at Global Outreach Ministries. The tour ends with the grand finale in Nassau at the True Vine store.

With a number one gospel song under her belt, this singer from Eleuthera is ready for the limelight. She tells Cara Hunt Cara Hunt how she hopes her ‘cry from the heart’ will encourage others to never give on their journey towards God.

H

adassah Thompson said she has had worship and God’s praise in her from the moment of conception.

As the daughter of a pastor and a mother who sings, she has been surrounded by music and ministry all of her life.

In fact, her mother – whom Hadassah names as one of her main inspirations for her own musical career – not only sang in church, but also at events and conferences with other gospel artists.

For many years, Hadassah sang backup for others, but knew that eventually there would be a song inside her that would propel her into the spotlight.

“Although I was content to sing in the background, people told me that there was more in me,” she told Tribune Weekend.

That potential was manifested in 2018 when she first began penning the lyrics to what would become her new single, “Heart’s Cry”.

At the time she had been going through some challenging issues in her own life.

“I felt stagnant, like I was not moving, and writing this song was just a way to work through that. I felt God pouring into me through the song. However, I don’t think that I understood the magnitude of the words at the time, I needed to mature spirituality.”

She explained that her music is inspired by a variety of artists and genres.

They of course include her mom Clarice Thompson, as well as Tasha Cobbs-Leonard, the Atlanta-based singer who rose to fame with her powerful gospel ballad “Break Every Chain,” which was the number one song on the Billboard charts for 12 weeks.

More than an artist, Tasha Cobbs-Leonard is an innovator and influencer with a passion for mentorship. Resulting from this passion came the launch of the iLead Escape, a global ministry mentorship programme that aids 2,000 people yearly in sharpening the knowledge and execution of their gifts. In addition to this programme, Tasha extended the reach of her mentorship with her debut book, “WORSHIP 101”, a manual that revisits the basics of worship.

Hadassah also admires Jekalyn Carr, a multiaward-winning independent recording artist. She is a speaker, entrepreneur, actress and author.

As a top-selling recording artist, Carr achieved eight Billboard number ones before the age of 21 with her singles “You’re Bigger” and “You Will Win”, among others.

Hadassah said she admires these women for their strong worship presence and diversity in their career.

“I definitely want to do more. I have a lot to say, so there is more to come in the near future,” she said.

Her advice to up-and-coming gospel artists is to never give up and never lose faith in God. “I have a testimony to share with others, that no matter how far you have struggled, you can still draw closer to God,” she said.

ne of this season’s hottest new trends take a quick journey to the past. Yes, it’s all about going retro!

Gingham is all the rage for the Spring and Summer this year, conjuring up images of smocked little girl dresses and picnic tables.

Not to despair, however, the season’s best looks are very fashion savvy and make a huge statement.

Gingham is a plain-woven fabric typically with striped, check or plaid patterns in white and a bright colour made from dyed cotton or cotton-blend yarns. It is made of carded, medium or fine yarns.

It’s light-weight nature makes it a natural choice for the heat and humidity of the Bahamas, and its versatility makes it a great wardrobe staple.

While gingham is a bold print when worn all over, you can still get the effect with a few well-

placed pops of the fabric.

You can go big with a full outfit – picture a jacket and skirt or a dress – or have just the faintest hint of gingham; think ballet flats with a gingham bow or a pencil thin belt with the pattern.

Or just grab an accessory like a gingham hat, earrings or handbag as you dash out the door.

Another great thing about gingham is that it is really a flattering trend for all shapes and sizes and is an acceptable fabric for office wear, church outfits or even semi-formal affairs.

And because gingham comes in a multitude of colours, you can find the perfectly flattering hue.

Consider crisp black and white gingham. On its own, it provides a sleek and sophisticated look. However, add a pop of red and the look is instantly more preppy and career driven.

ood day, gardeners. As we start getting into the middle of March it is a good time to consider pruning shrubs and trees, and in particular, ornamental grasses respond very well to being cut at this time of year.

Examples of ornamental grasses include but are not limited to: Arundo (giant reed grass), Cortaderia (pampas grass), Muhlenbergia (Muhly grass), Pennisetum (fountain grass), Spartina (cord grass), Tripsacum (Fakahatchee grass), and Uniola (sea oats).

On a side note, did you know that the panicles (basically, the flower/seed head) of sea oats are edible?

Sea oats can be cooked into cereal or ground to be made into bread, and this is also one of the first plants that should be planted on the beach for dune restoration to stabilise the sand and rejuvenate the habitat. There are regulations in harvesting wild sea oats, as they are considered protected in many coastal areas (the Bahamas included), but this is a bit silly because the seed heads very rarely produce viable seeds. The plant is propagated by underground rhizomes. It would also take a whole lot of them to harvest enough grain to be used for food. Regardless, sea oats are a pioneer plant and are beneficial to beach or dune restoration.

The Cord grass is used in marshy areas and is well used in wet or lowlying areas to help filter runoff from the land, and to assist in absorbing water.

They will also tolerate dry spells quite well.

Pampas grass flowers a few times throughout the year and is commonly used as a landscape plant. Muhly grass also tolerates dry spells, and sandy soils.

Fountain grass is available in two varieties, green, and red or purple, depending upon how one sees it. The green variety spreads willingly and profusely by seed that is blown by the wind. The red form is sterile and will not propagate from seed and hence is noninvasive.

Fakahatchee grass is also commonly used in the landscape and lends a soft texture to landscape design.

It too tolerates both wet and dry locations quite well.

Pampas grass is native to the dry highlands of Argentina, and is used as an

ornamental grass in larger landscapes, it can take up quite a bit of space and it gives a gorgeous display of feathery flowers. Arundo is best kept contained as it tends to spread unabated over pretty much anywhere it’s planted.

Regardless of the type of grass, all of these

ornamental grasses are well served by cutting them down to a few inches above ground level in March. They will spring back very quickly, and go on to give a display of soft, flowing textures and in some cases, they will give a wonderful display of flowers. If there areas in your garden that you would like a softer, flowing texture to be included then ornamental grasses are a good option to consider.

Other plants respond well to pruning at this time of year, other than the ornamental grasses. Continue pruning out exhausted canes on tomato plants, trim shrubs and flowering plants for increased foliage and flower production. If plants are looking a bit tired, a handful of fertilizer will help to

create deeper colours and increase foliage and flower production in tandem with pruning.

Don’t be afraid to cut, this is the time for renewed growth and showiness in many plants and trees.

When weeding out the garden, I encourage you to leave some “weeds” such as shepherd’s needle as food for bees, birds, and butterflies. So, bring out the shears and the clippers and get cutting! As always, I wish happy gardening.

Mama Sassy’s aims to spice up store shelves A 10-pound bag of goat pepper gifted by a friend, led home cook Cherelle Cartwright on a path to creating pepper jams and jellies.

After demand for her products spread like wildfire, a grant from Access Accelerator enabled her to test five of her products in an FDA-approved lab in the United States. Now, the budding entrepreneur is set on bringing her fiery flavours to local and international supermarkets.

In late 2018, Cherelle scolded a friend in jest for consistently dropping in for a meal without contributing anything. Weeks later, that friend delivered a 10-pound bag of goat pepper to her, with the caveat that they taste whatever meal she decided to create with it.

A bit daunted but intrigued by the giant bag of peppers, Cherelle began experimenting. She eventually came up with recipes for two

transformed into a Bahamian fish fry with live entertainment and local culinary favourites.

“Bringing an authentic Bahamian experience like fish fry is critical so that our guests can experience and taste it. I am looking forward to seeing the friends and families enjoying this great experience,” said Allan Orreal, Vice President of Culinary Operations at Atlantis.

He said guests can look forward to the freshest local seafood prepared with care and love.

Valencia Moss, manager at the Ocean Club Golf Course Clubhouse, said the fish fry themed dinners started just before the COVID-19 global pandemic hit and were just recently picked reintroduced.

“It has continuously grown since then. We decided to call it a fish fry because we wanted to attract our locals here and tourists alike.

If they were unable to go out to the actual fish fry itself, they can come, dine and get the same quality of food,” said Valencia.

On the menu are items like peas and rice, macaroni, grilled and friend snappers,

pepper sauce flavours - mangocarrot-pineapple and papayarosemary-Spanish-thyme.

“My friends told me while they appreciated my products, they felt like I should be selling them to make money,” said Cherelle. “Eventually, I did just that and started doing a lot of pop-ups with the two pepper sauces I developed to feel the market and get a response from the public.”

Within weeks, the demand for her creations spread like wildfire.

“I decided to make more flavours of pepper jams and jellies because I realised it was a niche market that few people tapped into,” she noted.

Cherelle established Mama Sassy’s Gourmet Foods, seeing an opportunity propelled by the demand for her creations.

Driven to grow her new business, yet recognising that business classes would cost her a “pretty penny,” Cherelle decided to capitalise on courses offered at the Access Accelerator to “learn as much as (she) could.”

“At the end of it, you got the opportunity to submit your business plan and enter a pitch competition,” she explained. “I entered the contest,

chicken, conch fritters, potatoes, and other options like calamari, sautéed shrimps, salmon, and various sides.

“We have sky juice, especially because it is local and it is Bahamian. We also have Bahama Mamas. We have guests that call and ask if this is the same as Fish Fry at Arawak Cay, and we say it’s a (similar) concept. So when they come and dine, they let us know that they will come back and share with friends,” she said.

Valencia said the Clubhouse is happy to have Bahamian music artist Alia Coley, who has performed at the Friday night event since its inception.

“I know we are supposed to be introducing more local artists that will be featured in the coming weeks and we are changing up the set up a bit more. We will incorporate a live conch salad station. This makes for a great night out because it is a getaway from the getaway. It is unique, quiet, and you can just relax and enjoy the ambiance. It is open to everyone,” she said.

Cherelle invested the majority of the prize money into product testing.

“My eyes were always on the big picture, which was not only just to be able to do something here,” she said.

“The grant was a godsend. Nutritional testing for one product tallied close to $1,000. The grant alleviated some of my financial burdens, considering the number of products I have and the fact that I was starting a business from scratch without two nickels to rub together to make a dime.”

Today, Mamma Sassy’s line of products includes six pepper jams and jellies, three balsamic vinaigrette salad dressings, a Guinness glaze, two pepper marinades, along with honey and syrup. Cherelle has gotten five of her products FDA-tested through the grant.

While she has made incredible strides, she still feels she has a long way to go.

“I’m still facing roadblocks because right now, my product is one of the few products in this country that has been officially tested but is not in any major food chains,” she shared. “That’s something that

is a work in progress because you have to put your brand out there constantly. I’ve learned that you have to be persistent and tenacious.”

That tenacity was one ingredient that propelled Cherelle to win a Royal Caribbean Group pepper sauce competition in October 2021.

The contest, held in partnership with the Access Accelerator, aimed to boost Bahamian small businesses amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

After a panel of judges selected her papaya medley marinade out of three pepper sauces, Cherelle was given the opportunity to have her products featured on Royal Caribbean vessels and properties.

Now faced with the task of producing pepper jams and jellies for a large audience of Royal Caribbean guests every year, Cherelle said she feels she has no choice but to scale up her home-based business.

“It is a different ball game having to increase sauce production for Royal Caribbean,” she said. “Some would get intimidated, but I look at it as an obstacle to overcome, and I am not prepared to fail.”

Taylor’s contract with MGM ended in 1959 but she had to do one more film with the studio – who chose the John O’Hara’s 1935 novel Butterfield 8 about a society prostitute. Her private life and scandals made it easy for the public to associate the role with her. As MGM had predicted, Butterfield 8 was a huge commercial success and grossed $18 million in world

Away from MGM, Taylor next starred in Cleopatra (1963) with 20th Century Fox and became the first movie star to be paid $1,000,000 for a role, ten percent of the film’s profits, as well as shooting the film in Todd-AO, a widescreen format inherited from Mike Todd.

Production of the film, which began in England in 1960, was plagued by costly sets and costumes, constant delays and a closely followed extramarital affair with her costar Richard Burton. Filming was stopped because of bad weather and Taylor’s health. In March 1961, she developed near fatal pneumonia, which necessitated a tracheotomy.

When she had recovered, 20th Century Fox moved the production to Rome, and abandoned its costly filmed material. They appointed Joseph Mankiewicz to be its new director. Filming ended in July 1962 at a final cost of $62 million – the most expensive movie ever made.

Cleopatra nearly drove 20th Century Fox to bankruptcy, and despite it being the biggest box-office success of 1963 in the United States, grossing $15.7 million, it took several years to earn back its production costs.

Taylor and Burton next starred together in Anthony Asquith’s The V.I.P.s which mirrored newspaper headlines. Taylor played a famous model planning to leave her millionaire husband, Richard Burton, for a lover. Not surprisingly, it was another box office success.

Taylor was next paid $500,000 to appear in a CBS television special Elizabeth Taylor in London, where she visited the city’s landmarks and quoted passages from well-known British writers. After filming The V.I.P.s, Taylor and Burton did not make any films for the next two years, taking time off to divorce their spouses and marry each other.

Film historian Alexander Doty noted that her films:“... during this period seemed to conform to, and reinforce, the image of an indulgent, raucous, immoral or amoral, and appetitive Elizabeth Taylor.”

They joined together in Vincent Minelli’s romantic comedy The Sandpiper (1965) about an illicit love affair between an artist and a married clergyman in Big Sur, California. Negative reviews did not stop the film grossing a healthy $14 million in the box office.

Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf (1966), the adaptation of Edward Albee’s play, produced the most critically acclaimed performance of Elizabeth Taylor’s career. She and Burton starred as a middleaged couple struggling through a marital crisis. Taylor put on weight, wore a wig, and used make-up convincingly to look older and worn out. She fought to get Mike Nichols to direct the film – despite his lack of experience - and the

Stanley Kaufmann of The New York Times stated that she had done “the best work of her career, sustained and urgent”, and the film became one of the biggest commercial successes of the year.

Taylor received her second Academy Award for Best Actress, a BAFTA, and a New York City Film Critics Circle Award for her performance That same year, Burton produced Doctor Faustus as a film following their joint performance to benefit the Oxford University Dramatic Society. They also jointly produced Franco Zeffirelli’s The Taming of the Shrew (1967) and the film became another box office success, grossing $12 million.

Taylor’s third 1967 film, Reflections in a Golden Eye (made without Burton) and directed by John Huston was about a gay military officer and his unfaithful wife. Marlon Brando replaced the sick Montgomery Clift in the film, who died before filming began. It was a critical and commercial failure. Together they made only one more film in 1976 – an adaptation of Graham Greene’s novel The Comedians another box office disappointment. *

By the end of the 1960s, Taylor’s glamorous years as Hollywood’s superstar were over. She still got parts and she was still paid well, but she couldn’t keep up with the

younger actresses like Julie Christie and Jane Fonda. The public were also tiring of the Burton-Taylor romance. They starred together in Boom! (1968) based on Tennessee Williams’s The Milk Train Doesn’t Stop Here Anymore, and she alone in Secret Ceremony – a psychological drama with Mia Farrow and Robert Mitchum. The Only Game in Town (1970) was an unsuccessful film with Warren Beatty where she played a Las Vegas showgirl. 1972 was a better year: Zee and Co with Michael Caine; and with Burton in Dylan Thomas’ Under Milk Wood, and Peter Ustinov’s Hammersmith is Out – her tenth collaboration with Burton.

Taylor’s last film with Burton was Divorce His, Divorce Hers (1973).

They divorced the following year, but remarried in Botswana for less than nine months, on October 10, 1975.

She also starred in Night Watch (1973) and Ash Wednesday (1973), playing a woman who had multiple plastic surgeries in an attempt to save her marriage. Her film The Driver’s Seat (1974) was a failure.

Taylor married her sixth husband – US senator John Warner in 1976 and took fewer roles, choosing to support his career instead.

She divorced him in 1982. The Blue Bird (1976) and Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music (1977) were two panned failures.

Coming out of semi-retirement, Taylor starred in The Mirror Crack’d (1980) – an Agatha Christie mystery, and took her first major stage role in Lillian Hellman’s The Little Foxes which opened in May 1981, followed by a sold-out six month run.

Encouraged by the success of The Little Foxes, Taylor and producer Zev Buffman founded the Elizabeth Taylor Repertory Company, whose first and only production was a revival of Noël Coward’s Private Lives, starring Taylor and Richard Burton. Although commercially successful, despite negative reviews, critics noted that both stars were in noticeably poor health. Taylor admitted herself to a drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre after the play’s run ended. Burton

died the following year and the theatre company was dissolved. *

Taylor met Larry Fortensky, a construction worker, at the Betty Ford Centre for Drug Rehab in Rancho Mirage, California in 1988, and married him in 1991 at Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch. The marriage ended after five years in 1996.

During the 1990s, Taylor concentrated on philanthropy – notably HIV/AIDS activism. She played a few acting roles – notably Pearl Slaghoople in The Flintstones (1994), but mostly receiving honours – both American and British.

Taylor struggled with health problems for most of her life.They increased during the last two decades of her life. She died of congestive heart failure at the age of seventynine at her home in Bel Air, Los Angeles on March 23, 2011.

Elizabeth Taylor was married eight times (twice to the same man).

She was one of the highest paid stars in Hollywood, and was the first celebrity to create her own collection of fragrances, which she personally supervised. She earned more money through the fragrance collection than during her entire acting career. When she died the bulk of her estimated $1 billion estate consisted of revenue from the collection. She also collected jewellery throughout her life. After her death her jewellery and fashion collection were auctioned by Christies to benefit her AIDS Foundation.

The jewellery sold for a recordbreaking sum of $156.8 million, and her clothes and accessories for a further $5.5 million. She left Larry Fortensky $800,000 in her will.

A BRIEF OVERVIEW

I

am looking at the 1936 Annual Report on ‘The Social and Economic Progress of the People of the Bahamas’. In that year, similar reports were sent to London by the governors/administrators of a total of 52 British colonies, protectorates and administrative territories,

spread around the world.

Alphabetically, from Bahamas to Zanzibar.

“The sun never set on the Union Jack.”

Somewhere, in places all around the world, Britain’s flag was always at the top of a pole.

1936 started with the singing of “God save the

King”, George V, but he died in June and was succeeded by Edward VIII, during whose reign I was born.

Edward abdicated in December and his brother became George VI. By the time I was four months old, I had already experienced two kings.

The population of the Bahama Islands was 59,828, of whom 40,072 lived on the Out Islands. The population of New Providence was 19,756. Andros had 7,071; Eleuthera 6,168; Long Island 4,515. Only 20 people lived on Cay Sal and Cay Lobos.

The House of Assembly had 29 Members from 15 polling divisions. Seldom did the Out Islands elect a member of their community. Most of their 21 representatives were inhabitants of New Providence.

Commerce, communications, housing, justice, police, the oost office, prisons, production, roads, sanitation, taxation and telegraphs are the principal subjects covered and several paragraphs are devoted to ‘miscellaneous’.

The Colony’s revenue reached £297,588 and expenditure was £288,969.

In 1946, revenue had risen to £823,604 and expenditure to £839,292, and Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David, who had abdicated the British throne in 1936, had resigned as Governor.

Sir William Murphy became the occupant of Government House and an expatriate Englishman coined the expression ‘Edward the Quitter’.

The population had grown to 80,639 and a little more than half that number were females and the Governor reported 2,500 horned cattle, 2,800 horses, 6,000 swine, 12,000 goats, 20,000 sheep and 300,000 poultry, 3,984 bicycles, 1,205 motorcars, 428 trucks, 68

There were eight aircraft registered in the Bahamas and four commercial pilots had been licenced.

1946 marked the birth of ‘1540’ on your radio dial, which is still the frequency used by ZNS Radio.

Television was unknown.

After 1949, the Colonial Reports covered two years.

1956/57 was one of these.

In 1956, from his home on Mount Fitzwilliam, the Earl of Ranfurly looked out over the city of Nassau at a Colony that had grown to 116,530, The report did not break down how many lived in the Out Islands.

Revenue was £4,078,521, exceeded by the expenditure of £4,193,544 and Elizabeth II was in the fourth year of her reign.

By 1966, the population exceeded 140,000 and it was estimated that 85,967 lived on New Providence. Tourism was growing steadily and a hotel room in a first-class hotel cost £18- £20 a day. The exchange rate of £1 = $2.80 had held steady since 1949.

FREEING LOLITA

he news last week reported that the Miami Seaquarium has been sold.

The new owners are MS Leisure, a subsidiary of the Dolphin Company.

The 56-year-old orca Lolita who has been held captive for five decades is finally going to stop having to perform for her food. She will not have to splash transfixed and unknowing audiences who delight in her “antics” without knowing the price that poor captive animal has had to pay, being held in the smallest orca tank in the world.

When I was young, I delighted in visiting the Miami Seaquarium, I had no idea how cruel those facilities were. As we became aware, I was embarrassed that I could have ever delighted in an outing there.

Poor Lolita was stolen from her pod (her family) in the Puget Sound near Seattle. You and I both know that big bucks changed hands as a reward for her kidnapping. She was lugged across the United States by unscrupulous owners who made vast amounts of money from her suffering, nothing to be proud of.

So now MS Leisure has announced that Lolita and her companion, a white-sided dolphin named Lii, will no longer be exhibited under its new licence with the Department of Agriculture. What does that mean exactly?

Will Lolita be somehow carefully transported to a kinder environment, a seaside sanctuary to live out her remaining years in a suitable habitat? She is too old to just be released into the wild, she would not be able to cope with the harsh realities of freedom. Whilst all sorts of learned “experts” debate on what her future will be, she will remain in a disgraceful “teacup of a tank” with no diversions except one dolphin friend.

For the animal held captive that pool of water is totally inadequate.

Zoos on land used to be deplorable, with lions, tigers, gorillas and other large animals pacing back and forth on concrete floors behind bars. Reality set in and zoos developed a long overdue conscience, and animals now live in a similar habitat to that which they are accustomed, with trees, grass, rocks, water features and places to hide and get away from the human masses gawking at them. There is no way to build a suitable habitat for an orca, porpoises or whales; they need the depth of the ocean and the kilometres of sea to swim in daily.
