A BUSY LITTLE ISLAND

FROM a sleepy little island, New Providence has grown into a city with a sound system of its own.

Wailing sirens, dogs barking, horns blasting and the incessant beat of bass from a passing car, party boat or public park can get on your last nerve.

The good news is, you can enjoy the beauty of the island and the growing number of exciting venues, while still enjoying a good night’s sleep.

It all boils down to the bedroom.

Turn your bedroom(s) into a quiet haven by stifling sound.

SIMPLE SOLUTIONS Look into simple ways to help block noise.

White noise, for example, will help mute background sound. White noise machines are specifically designed for this purpose and may be found on Amazon.

(If anyone knows of a local supplier, please let me know).

Noise may also be muted by running an air conditioner – use the Fan Only mode if the temperature’s already cool.

A fan will also muffle sound.

Try repositioning your bed so it’s further away from an exterior wall or window.

Line a wall with books and install heavy curtains to draw over the windows at night.

GETTING DRASTIC If none of these measures help, it may be time to do something more drastic.

This may include relocating your bedroom in your home

further away from the noise source.

I have friends who abandoned their upstairs bedroom and turned a downstairs room in the opposite corner of their home into a bedroom.

They cheerfully report that the room’s not only a lot quieter, but they no longer have streetlights shining into their room.

Consider investing in triple-pane glass, sealing the glass with caulk and weather-stripping.

Get aggressive and install hardwood interior plantation shutters, which are considered the “gold-standard” in high-end window treatments.

Interior shutters are not only a great home improvement, they provide an additional barrier against sound.

MATTRESS Even the slightest noise can keep you awake if you’re not comfortable.

If you toss and turn during the night, wake up sore, or notice lumps and sags in your bed, chances are you need to replace the mattress.

Invest in a high-quality mattress and pillows. The mattress should be replaced every seven to 10 years. The rule of thumb is to replace your pillow every one to two years.

Use only breathable bedding so you won’t sweat.
