Homecoming Sunday at Mount Tabor

Celebrating 36 years of 'Christian witness' –

MEMBERS of the Mount Tabor Church are celebrating 36 years of what they are calling “Christian witness.”

Under the theme “Homecoming Sunday”, the church marked its 36th anniversary with the MTC Friends and Family on February 26. As a part of its celebrations, a community prayer-walk and breakfast giveaway were also recently hosted in Pinewood Gardens, the community where the church is located.

This anniversary was particularly noteworthy as several changes have recently taken place at Mount Tabor.

“This is the first anniversary in this historic period of transition, after the retirement of Bishop (Neil) Ellis and the induction of Pastor Rickeno Moncur as the new senior pastor in the church’s 35 years. It also is the first anniversary where we mark the merger of two ministry models,” said Pastor Kenneth Romer.

He told Tribune Religion there is a “spirit of celebration” looming over the church, as members mark the rich past and glorious future of the church.

The glue that keeps the church functioning after all these years, Pastor Romer said, is its connection to God, each other and the communities

they are called to serve. He said the Mount Tabor Church has impacted every area of life and ministry over the years.

“Spiritually, we have seen tens of thousands saved and baptised, and thousands added to ministry. Socially, we have seen the establishment of two housing communities, have fed thousands and implemented social engagement programmes to improve the lives of many. Economically, we have launched the first debit card for a church, assisted in recovery after natural disasters, and created new and emerging opportunities for entrepreneurs and local stakeholders,” said Pastor Romer.

Moving forward, he said the goal for the ministry is to cultivate and maintain a spiritual environment where the glory of God is consistently evident throughout all aspects of the ministry. He said they will also fuel innovation, industry and entrepreneurship among the congregation. The plan is to also create a ministry model to ensure the involvement and inclusion of all members, where their spiritual gifting is maximised.

Liturgical dance competition is seeking sponsorship for ‘bigger, better’ event this summer

With more than 15 years' experience in liturgical dance under her belt, Sasha Johnson had a vision for a competition which would display the talents of those who specialise in this form of religious dance.

One year ago, she launched the Let Praises Rise Dance Competition to recognise the gifted dancers in the community.

She is now in the process of planning the second competition slated for this June.

Ms Johnson, who is the proprietor of The Whole Armor Dance Supplies store, said the group is seeking financial sponsorship as well as in-kind services, especially organisations concerned with youth development.

This year, the dance competition seeks to stage an even bigger, more uplifting and professional event with additional categories that will include group performances. The event is scheduled for Saturday, June 17, at 6pm.

Ms Johnson said her love of this form of dance and that fact that it connects people spiritually through worship in dance is what drives her to promote this particular art form.

“What I love most about this form of dance is the fact that a group of people can be connected by a single purpose that's being expressed through movement and their passion for worship,” she told Tribune Religion.

Having participated in a wide range of dance competitions locally and internationally, Ms Johnson said she understands the hard work, dedication and sacrifice it takes to be a liturgical dancer.

“Although it is a competition, the aim of the event is to bring awareness to this form of dance; allowing individuals and groups to showcase their skills and also to have those that enjoy the art to enjoy a night of fun-filled worship.”

The inaugural event attracted an audience of nearly 300 people, including religious leaders, local professional artists, entertainers, corporate professionals, families, and well-wishers. Additionally, through

social media campaigns, media interviews and print publications an estimated 3,000 individuals were reached.

“With the capital island of the Bahamas alone having an estimated 2,000 liturgical dancers, the continued reach for such an event is great,” she said.

“The turnout for last year's competition exceeded my expectations. Seeing that it was my first year, I was prepared for less than 100 people. Little did I know there were a little less than 300 that attended to the point where we were bringing out chairs to accommodate the crowd. I was blown away. God showed up and showed out.”

Ms Johnson promises that this year’s event will be much bigger and better. She is looking forward to giving dancers a special platform.

“They can expect to come to the event and all leave as winners. They can expect the move of God to move through the participants and the attendees. He did it before, He can do it again,” she said.

THE TRIBUNE RELIGION Thursday, March 9, 2023 ● PAGE 45
BRYANNAH INGRAHAM, one of last year’s winners,

Recently, I’ve been doing a whole lot more. Anyone who knows me will probably ask, “Where do you find the time?” Here’s the catch: I’ve been doing a whole lot more...for me!

This year began with me asking one very important question, “Why Not?”

Why not Expand my borders? Explore new activities? Experience life in a different way?

I’ll be the first to admit, I’ve been here before. But the difference now is: I’ve determined to be intentional about living the life I want; at whatever stage I find myself. And, you know what? It is possible.

What was the impetus that drove me here? You probably know it: the Prayer of Jabez.

1 Chronicles 4:10 states, “And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve

me! And God granted him that which he requested.”

Apart from the sincerity of the prayer, there are some invaluable ideals that Jabez embraced so many years ago, that I have incorporated into my life right now.

1. Jabez prays for the blessing

You would think this was the easy part. We all want to be blessed. In fact, blessing comes as a promise from the Word. Philippians 4:19 assures the blessing of needs met. 2 Corinthians 9:8 declares that we can abound in our kingdom assignment because God’s grace and blessing abound toward us. I can go on.

One of the ideals I had to rid myself of was the idea that I was not deserving of God’s very best. I had to change my mindset of just surviving on crumbs and understand that the life God had for me was so much more affirming that what I had experienced previously. I was His child, and I shouldn’t be afraid to ask!

2. Jabez asks God to enlarge his territory

As it turns out, this was, and in many ways still is the hardest part for me. No territory is gained or lost without incident. Asking for enlarged territory is pretty scary. Have you ever thought that the cooling lava from an erupted volcano creates more surface or land? Or have you considered that the same earthquake that cracks the earth creates valleys, lakes, and other habitats?

When we ask for enlarged territory, we are actually asking God to come in and move things around, create space, institute change, making what was old new again. And He is capable of doing just that! This part of the prayer positions you to see doors open, and experience new opportunities and connections.

3. Jabez prays for the continual presence of God

We know that God is omnipresent. He is everywhere, all at once. God’s continual guidance

and presence is that one thing that assures us, no matter where we find ourselves in life, we are never really alone. Jabez’s prayer here does, however, give God permission to superimpose His presence on Jabez’s life. It is one thing to say, “God is here.” It is quite another to declare, “God is in this with me!”

Why not…pray like Jabez? AYANNA CARTWRIGHT

4. Jabez prays that he is kept from harm

The prayer doesn’t ask God to stop bad things from happening. It doesn’t suggest that God place Jabez in a bubble and not allow loss. Jabez says simply “Keep me...”

To be kept by God is so reassuring. It means to maintain the connection, never be let go, hold onto like treasure, held safely and with security. What an amazing sentiment!

Yes! This year I am asking myself, “Why not?”

Why not ask for God’s Blessing in greater measure? Why not place myself in a position to be His hands extended in the earth?

Why not explore enlarged territories? New streams of income?

Why not experience His presence and amazing keeping power on another level?

I’m determined to be a different person at the end of this year than I am right now! You should be, too!

Like Jabez, we can explore, expand, experience all that God has for us, together! God bless you this week!

Why the pronouns used for God matter

(THE CONVERSATION)

The Church of England is considering what language and pronouns should be used to refer to God.

The church’s General

Synod has, however, clarified that it will not abolish or substantially revise any of the currently authorised liturgies. Nonetheless, this news made headlines and brought up questions of how religions refer to God. Is God male? What pronouns should be used to refer to God?

As a Catholic feminist theologian who runs a women’s center at a Catholic university, I understand the impact of the pronouns Christians use for God. Historically, Christian tradition has recognised many pronouns for God, including “he/him,” “she/her” and “they/ them.” This is partly because God does not have a gender. Despite the diverse images used for God in Scripture and Christian tradition, male language

and images predominate in contemporary Christian worship.

Many images for God

When we speak about God, we do so knowing that what we say is incomplete. All images for God reveal something about God. No image of God is literal or reveals everything about God.

For example, while Christians can refer to God as a king, they must also remember that God is not literally a king. Calling God a king expresses that God is powerful. However, it is not expressing factual accuracy about God’s gender or implying that God is human.

Referring to God with many titles, descriptions and images invites many of us to recognise the mystery of God. God is like all of these things but also more than all of these things.

Thomas Aquinas, an influential 13th-century Catholic theologian, asserted that individuals can talk about God in ways that are true but always inadequate. Aquinas explained that our language about God affirms something about God, yet God is always beyond that

which we can express. We express truths about God in human terms and constructs, but since God is mystery, God is always beyond these categories. Scripture is filled with multiple images of God. In some of these images, God is depicted as a father or male. Jesus teaching his disciples to pray the “Our Father” prayer is perhaps the most well-known example of a male title for God.

In other parts of Scripture, God is female. The prophet Isaiah compares God to a nursing mother in the Book of Isaiah. A mother hen gathering her chicks is an analogy for God in the Gospel of Matthew.

The Book of Wisdom, a book in the Catholic Bible, depicts wisdom personified as a woman. Wisdom 10:18-19 states: “She took them across the Red Sea and brought them through deep waters. Their enemies she overwhelmed.” This account presents God as female, leading Moses and the Israelites out of Egypt and into the Promised Land.

Depicting God as female in Scripture speaks to God’s tenderness as well as strength

and power. For example, the prophet Hosea compares God with a bear robbed of her cubs, promising to “attack and rip open” those who break the covenant.

Elsewhere in Scripture, God has no gender. God appears to Moses in the burning bush in Exodus 3, defying all gender categories. The Book of 1 Kings presents a gentle image of a gender-neutral God. God asked the prophet Elijah to go to a mountain. While there, Elijah experienced a strong wind, an earthquake and fire, but God was not present in those. Instead, God was present in a gentle whisper. The creation stories of Genesis refer to Godin the plural. These examples emphasize that God has no gender and is beyond any human categories.

The social impact of male pronouns Pronouns, like “He/Him” in the Christian tradition, can limit one’s understanding of God. It can also make many individuals think that God is male.

It is not wrong to refer to God with male pronouns, but it can

have negative social and theological consequences to refer to God with only male pronouns.

Feminist theologian Mary Dalyfamously stated, “If God is male, then the male is God.” In other words, referring to God only as the male gender has a significant social impact that can exalt one gender at the expense of others.

Referring to God only as male can also limit one’s theological imagination: Using many pronouns for God emphasises that God is mystery, beyond all human categories.

The Church of England is not only responding to modern questions about gender, but also continuing a long tradition within Christianity of referring to God as male, female and beyond gender constructs.

Life Changers Ministries helps empower people to become home owners

At least 150 people recently had an eyeopening experience that will set them well on their way to fulfilling the dream of becoming homeowners.

Some were just wishing and not taking any action towards becoming homeowners. Others made inquiries but still didn't feel empowered to take the first step. Some were already saving towards the down payment for their home. But all of the people who attended Life Changers Ministries' Home Ownership Seminar on Saturday are inspired and fired up to make their dream a reality this year.

The seminar, presented by Life Changers Ministries International under the theme: “Positioning for Home Ownership in 2023”, provided participants with all of the knowledge they needed. A wealth of speakers and vendors were on hand to open their eyes and answer all their questions. They were also given practical, step-by-step processes that they could take immediately to achieve their goal.

Out of the 150 attendees, one family will receive financial

assistance from the church, on behalf of Bishop Valentino Williams and Pastor Cleopatra Williams towards their closing costs. For Bishop Williams, empowering his church members and the wider community in this way will help in preserving and uplifting families for the Glory of God.

"At Life Changers, we have declared that this is our year of 'Positioning, Possibilities and Progress', and everything that we do at the City (our hall) this year will be centered around that theme," Bishop Williams said.

The first speaker of the event was luxury real estate agent Jeremy Pratt, who spoke on the topic: “Real Estate and Home Ownership”.

After obtaining his real estate licence in 2022, he entered the luxury market and has been making waves within this sector at Maison Bahamas since October, 2022. Mr Pratt’s niche is luxury real estate sales and the rental market, and his goal is to become a developer of communities with a focus on Bahamians who want to live a good life. He was followed by Michael Moss, CEO of Malik's Construction, who spoke to attendees

on “The Building Process and Home Ownership”.

Malik's is a family owned and operated business, originally formed in 2002. The company has experience building, developing and managing construction projects.

Morrissa Clarke represented RBC Finco, and addressed the topic “Mortgage and Home Ownership”. She is a banker by profession, having started her professional banking career in 2007. Her 15 years experienced proved invaluable as she explained the mortgage process.

The final speaker was Jonte Augusta, a representative from

the Department of Housing. He spoke to attendees about the housing programs currently in place at the Department. Mr Augusta walked attendees through the process of signing up for the government's housing programme, explaining what is required to be accepted. Each speaker presented and engaged in 15 minutes of questions and answers.

The winning family who will receive assistance with closing costs will be randomly selected and announced on the first Sunday in May.
