Karin says: “Too many feathers…both at the shoulder and the split. She looks like she’s appearing at a revue style show. This does not look like an expensive Dolce & Gabbana gown. Still, she looks great despite the dress and I love the long braid.”

Karin says: “Another gown that was ‘wasted’ on a virtual awards show. It’s so gorgeous.

The shade of coral of this Oscar de la Renta off-theshoulder gown is to die for.

And the hair! This look could not be any more perfect.”

Cara says: “This green colour is everything, and the dress and the matching wrap scream ‘drama’. She is channeling all the movie star vibes. Oh, and let’s not forget she finished off her stunning look with a million dollars’ worth of diamonds – always a girl’s best friend.”

Cara says: “Viola seldom disappoints. What an awesome print and her natural pin-up looks great. If I had one teensy tiny complaint it would be the jewellery. I am not feeling the dullness of the silver with the vibrancy of the print. I think gold accessories would have been a better choice.”

Cara says: “I think this is lovely. The colour and print really work for her. This loose caftan style of dress can often be tricky to pull off because it can sometimes look like you are wearing Grandma’s nightgown, but on Maya, it’s cute.”

Cara says: “I have to say I am not in love with this dress. She looks awesome as always, and the purple is another great colour for her, but it’s not wowing me; it’s just not among my favorites of the night.”

Cara says: “I am swooning over this colour. So pretty!

Love the drama of the rosettes over the simplicity of the gown and the flawless loose curls.

SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCERS PROMOTE BAHAMAS VACATIONS

As the Bahamas slowly opens up to visitors again, the country is getting much needed publicity thanks to a number of bloggers and social media influences who have documented their recent vacations here.

The publicity is much needed to jump-start our tourism industry, which has taken a massive blow since the start

And as more people get vaccinated and feel comfortable travelling again, videos documenting the experiences of social media personalities having safe and fun stays at Bahamian resorts, are a great way to encourage tourism.

YouTube health and fitness vlogger Jayla Koriyan, who has more than 250,000 subscribers, recently documented her stay at the Grand Hyatt at Baha Mar.

Q: What will you be doing to keep busy? “ Weekend plans always include quiet chill time with family and friends, a game of dominoes, and old school scorch She showed off her suite, talked about her dining experiences, and praised the ease of getting tested for COVID-19 at the resort. The main reason for her trip was the grand opening of the new MacFit360 gym. So far, the video has gotten nearly 40,000 views.

YouTuber ‘Becoming Bev’ also documented her stay at Baha Mar last month as well as her trip to Exuma, where she and her group of friends were able to interact with locals and other visitors, as well as swim with the famous swimming pigs, feed the turtles and inaguas, and enjoy an adventurous nurse shark experience. More than 5,000 people have seen her video to date.

Atlantis was the first resort they stayed at on their way to achieving this goal.

The family flew in from New York to enjoy a stay in a two-bedroom suite at the Royal Towers. In addition to exploring the water parks, the girls got to have a mermaid poolside experience, while mom and dad had social distanced spa experiences at the Mandara Spa. The family did follow Atlantis recommendations to vacation in place and didn’t leave the resort during their stay.

The vloggers were able to share with their visitors the process of getting travel visas and information about on-site COVID testing.

Georgette Rolle It was her love of free pastries that inadvertently lead Georgette to a career in golf. She tells Alesha Cadet how proud she is of her new leadership position in the sport and how pleased she is to represent strong women in male-dominated professions.

S

he was six years old when she first picked up a golf club, but it wasn’t until the age of 15 that she truly fell in love with the game.

Today, Georgette Rolle is the new head golf professional for Baha Mar’s Royal Blue Golf Course.

She considers herself lucky to have made her passion into her career.

“I am an LPGA Class B golf professional who has continued to push the limits of research with the game.

Always looking for the next thing that can improve my overall performance, I am constantly studying the trends of instruction and the industry. I have always been pushed to achieve more, and I continue to question and push every day for ways to evolve the sport of golf,” she told Tribune Woman.

Working as an assistant golf professional at Baha Mar since 2015, Georgette said she has learned much over the years.

“Any leadership role comes with its challenges, but because I have been in the industry for most of my life, I have seen the challenges and had time to prepare for them. For most of my beginning years I have been the only girl in the group. With that, I have fortunately been practicing being comfortable blending in and even being in leadership roles when necessary, and understanding that feedback, whether positive or negative, (is important),” she said.

Entering a male-dominated profession is never easy, but Georgette had great female role models in her life to show her the way.

She is proud to have been raised by a single mother and grandmother, who recently passed away. They prepared her to be a strong woman and gave her the courage to take on any challenge.

Georgette said she is also proud to represent the other women of her family and the women of Baha Mar, as well as the women of the Bahamas. She is especially proud to represent the many hard-working women who put their energy and efforts into her to help make her the professional she is today.

“I feel very privileged to take on this responsibility.

When I think about it, golf was never on my radar (as a child). I doubt I ever thought about the sport of golf until my mom’s friend, who was a golfer, suggested that golf was a good thing for her kids to play and something to do on the weekends. I was too young to begin, but with two of my older sisters joining the Bahamas Golf Federation, I said yes,” she said.

“Initially, the main thing that kept me going back was that every Saturday there was the guarantee of free pastries at the South Ocean Golf Course.

So, I’m sure that 50 percent of my early time at golf was spent lurking around the bakery, eating the pastries, it seemed, no one else knew were free.

That kept me in the game until I began to appreciate and love it.”

Georgette has been teaching golf since 2005 through volunteer efforts as a collegiate golfer with a youth and golf development organisation called The First Tee. It was there that she realised she really had a true passion for the game, but also that she enjoyed being around kids and watching them learn.

In 2008, she took on a different role with The First Tee in Houston, Texas.

She worked mainly as a curriculum developer for the programme, but also oversaw a lot of the tournament operations and daily operations for the private junior golf facility. She gained further experience as one of the leaders of the Fourteen Clubs Golf Academy in Nassau.

“I got into the golf business because I love the game, and I loved being able to develop programmes and teaching models that could help its evolution. I stayed in it because I love the opportunity to come to work in a great atmosphere and a soothing environment. These elements range from the beauty you see on the course, to the constantly changing atmosphere, and to the people that play every day and also find the beauty in it,” she said.

“It’s a shared love for the game that I enjoy with the (resort) guests and the industry on the whole. During the years of pursuing my Master of Science degree, I began to realise that I GEORGETTE teeing off in the qualifying round of the Pure Silk-Bahamas simply like research and figuring out LPGA Classic in 2016 the next best thing. When I got into golf (BIS Photo: Kemuel Stubbs) operations and deeper into teaching, I realised that there was no limit to developing my own philosophies. I began to fully dive into the golf operations world with the intent of simply learning as much as I could andseeing where it would take me.”

So how does it feel being the new head golf professional at Baha Mar? For Georgette, she believes any success is gradual and has to do with the individual being disciplined and dedicated to their craft. When her opportunity came, she was prepared for it.

I am just one of the female professional golfers in the Bahamas who are pursuing excellence in the industry. I, along with Raquel Riley, Alena Hutcheson and Jameica Duncombe, have been steering the wheel and representing female professional leaders in golf,” she said.

“I look at the young women we are mentoring in the game. Through our success, they can see golf not only as a means of education, but as a means for business or a career. For the longest time for a female golfer, the only opportunity was to make it to the LPGA tour, and so few athletes have made it to that level. With our success, hopefully they will look at taking on golf as a career instead of only a hobby.

“The whole development of a person starts with dedication within yourself.

I have a love and desire for developing the sport, so whether you are a woman or a man, you can transform the lives of people that you touch.”

Georgette’s husband, David, has also had a great influence on her golf career.

She actually describes him as “the true golfer” in her family. He always encouraged her to practice harder, think smarter when on the course, and continue to do more for the Bahamian youth through golf.

Her advice for the little girls aspiring to be professional golfers, is to continue to keep working at the craft in any way possible. And if they feel like they have done everything they can in one area, tackle the next one.

“I think a lot of young people only look at expanding upwards, but if they look laterally, they would see a whole new world. I would encourage them to say yes to every opportunity that is legitimate and use it as a learning experience. You can never have too much practice at being a leader. Always push yourself as hard as you can,” said Georgette.

Aside from her day-to-day duties, which include managing staff and the workplace, coordinating group events or tournaments, Georgette’s new responsibilities at the Royal Blue Golf Course encompass being able to foresee and prepare for changes in the industry.

This includes developing a team that aspires to more than just being able to perform the basic duties of the job. It also includes understanding the various personalities of the on- and off-property guests of Baha Mar. At the end of the day, it’s her job is to ensure that all guests, whether local or visiting, have a world-class experience on the course.

Bahamian royal fans eagerly anticipate Oprah’s Harry and Meghan interview

I

t’s the royal interview that everyone is talking about.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, aka Prince Harry and Meghan Markel, are set to give their first American interview to talk show queen Oprah Winfrey.

The interview, which is scheduled to air this Sunday on CBS at 8pm, comes on the heels of the couples Valentine’s Day announcement that they are expecting their second child and the confirmation that they would not be returning to the duties required of senior members of the British royal family. It also comes as Prince Harry’s 99-year-old grandfather Prince Philip remains hospitalised with cardiac issues.

In a teaser released by CBS, Oprah says “there is no subject that is off limits.”

She asks Meghan, “Were you silent or where you silenced?”

In the interview, Prince Harry makes reference to his late mother, Princess Diana, saying: “I’m just really relieved and happy to be sitting here talking to you with my wife by my side…Because I can’t begin to imagine what it must have been like for her, going through this process by herself all those years ago.”

“It has been unbelievably tough for the two of us, but at least we had each other,” he added.

In another clip, Harry adds that his “biggest concern was history repeating itself.”

Bahamian royal fans, many who got up extra early, all excited to watch Harry and Meghan tie the knot in 2018, now have mixed feelings about the couple following their decision to remove themselves from royal life.

“I think that you are either in or out. I loved Meghan and Harry, but let’s be real, they are just complaining at this point. You didn’t want people all up in your business, but then you draw attention to yourself by giving a whole tell-all interview, so clearly you want people know your business,” Keisha told Tribune Weekend.

Tribune reader Tia added: “I used to love Harry and Meghan, but I have to say I don’t understand Meghan. I feel like she knew what family she was marrying into and what life she would be expected to lead, and she agreed to that and then decided, ‘Oh no, I don’t want that anymore.’ I feel like she made Harry choose between her and his family. I think that Harry’s grandmother, the Queen, would have tried to smooth the way for them more if they didn’t turn their backs on his royal heritage.”

Bria, however, disagrees.

“I loved Meghan and Harry, but let’s be real, they are just complaining at this point.”

ON May 19, 2018, Bahamians excitedly watched the wedding of Harry and Meghan, but views on the couple have changed in the last three years

“I think that Meghan and Harry were right to leave. The royal family would have destroyed that girl just like they did her mother-in-law. Harry knows what that royal life does to people, and I think it shows how much he loves his wife that he got her out of there.”

Whatever their views on the royal family, they all agree the interview is must-see television.

“Don’t get me wrong, I will definitely be watching,” said Keisha.

“I want to see if anything they say will make people change their minds about the royal family and how they were treated,” said Tia. Bria added that she thinks the interview will paint the royal family in a negative light.

“I think that there are probably lots of shady things that are going be revealed. I can’t wait,” she said.

TERN Gallery hosts a visual representation of Caribbean culture

pon its launch in December, the new TERN Gallery announced that it be would a place where Caribbean art intersects, and where it can gain a global audience.

Making good on that promise, the local gallery is currently hosting Trinidadian artist Rodell Warner and his ‘Augmented Archives’ exhibition.

‘Augmented Archives’, an exhibition of 20 video prints curated by Lauren Perez, will be on display until May 14, 2021. It features a series of digitally augmented found photographs from in the 20th century Caribbean— creating an intersection of art, photography, and technology that further explores the artist’s ongoing investigation of Caribbean archives.

The exhibition includes three different bodies of work spanning the past five years of Rodell’s practice, as well as a limited edition of video prints available for acquisition upon the exhibition’s opening.

Combining digital animations and sound, the video prints reflect a newly colourised and digitised representation of mostly black and white analog photographs—with a majority of the works appearing in colour for the first time at TERN, which is named after a local seabird.

“Mostly anonymous Black and brown Caribbean figures sourced from digital archives whose lives were largely preserved under the context of colonialism and legacy of slavery,” the artist said.

“I’ve found a way to give form to what I’ve come to think of as the hidden interiority of the subjects of the photos—those invisible dimensions of their lives that resisted or escaped or were omitted from the archive.

He added: “My intention is really to invite people to find out what they might see in these colourised, digitised, perhaps fictionalised versions of rare images from the Caribbean’s past.”

Rodell is a Trinidadian artist working primarily in new media and photography. His works have been exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art in the 2016 ‘Dreamlandsexhibition’ as part of the collective video project Ways of Something; at the National Gallery of Jamaica as part of the 2016 exhibition ‘Digital’, and at the 10th Berlin

Rodell is a recipient of the 2011 Commonwealth Connections International Arts Residency, and the 2014 summer residency at NLS Kingston, and was commissioned in 2017 to create the Davidoff Art Edition, a series of five artworks printed onto a limited edition of five thousand boxes of luxury cigars and presented and sold at Art Basel in Hong Kong, Miami, and Basel.

Rodell lives and works between Port of Spain in Trinidad, Kingston in Jamaica, and Austin, Texas.

Bahamians can look forward to experiencing more work by regional artists like Rodell at TERN. The TERN Gallery was founded by Amanda Coulson and Lauren Perez.

One of the main things on the gallery’s agenda for 2021 is “innovation through partnering with the best minds and platforms in the industry to bring our artists to the global platform and conversations.”

It is also committed to programming a dynamic calendar of local events to continue supporting and encouraging creative minds within the region.

Turning up the heat

A

vocado may be dropping leaf now; this is normal and to be expected.

There is a thrip (insect) that will show up every year, usually in the cooler, dryer months, and the damage becomes very obvious now. There is not an easy fix for this, and as it does not affect fruit quantity or quality it is not an issue other than aesthetically, temporarily.

Commercial grove growers that supply stores where people (unrealistically) expect every fruit to look like a photo, spray regularly, which in turn is causing problems on a global scale as bugs are necessary for life, but that’s a bigger issue than we have no room for here (but it is something that I hope we as gardeners will all consider; we each play a role in helping or hurting in the way that we treat our own gardens).

The thrip affects last year’s leaf, which will mostly be dropping anyway. A severe infestation can cause some minor scarring on the fruit, but again, this does not affect fruit quantity or quality.

Early varieties of avocado should be budding now, getting ready to flower and then set fruit.

Patience is the name of the game now. Mango is also flowering, and it seems that this year there is a very heavy initial flush of flower on many trees on New Providence. It has taken a couple of years for them to recover from the stress of hurricane winds, and I expect that many of us will be jumping for joy at this year’s fruit set, barring heavy winds and excessive rains. Let’s keep our fingers crossed! Do not fertilize fruit trees that have flower on them. Mango in particular does not respond well to high nitrogen fertilizers, and fertilizing while there is flower may trigger decreased fruit set rather than encourage it. Wait until the last fruit is picked before applying any nutrients.

Beware the source if you’re buying or trading fruit trees. Layered equals weak roots. Seed equals a game of chance. Grafted or budded equals guarantees. Citrus may be flowering now, and the scent is divine. If your trees are not flowering yet, there is still time to get nutrients down. Citrus are heavy feeders, and they need minor nutrients in large quantities, iron, magnesium, etcetera. Be sure to use complete fertilizers on fruit trees, rather than low cost incomplete fertilizers as the minor nutrients have a large role to play in fruit quality and quantity.

February was hot. One doesn’t need a meteorologist to tell them that it has been hotter than we may be used to at this time of year, and the plants tell the story. Note the fast bolting of tender greens, spinach, lettuce, pak choi, cilantro and the likes.

I have started planting cole crops and leaf veg into slightly shaded areas in an attempt to extend their growing cycles. It is getting a bit late, but if you’re thinking to put down another crop of broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, etcetera, don’t wait!

FLOWERING mango tree Get in the garden this weekend. By the end of the month of March, it’ll be getting too late.

The end of the “cool weather” growing season is fast approaching, and if you’ve been growing tender greens in the sun, it may be time to consider putting up some shade cloth, or planting the next round into a semi shaded location in the garden. We are about to face the challenges of producing edible materials in the heat, and it can be quite difficult. I am scaling back on leaf vegetables.

Perennial leaf veg can be grown at any time, and now I start paying a bit more attention to plants such as the longevity spinach. Veg that can still be planted, including but not limited to: Asparagus, carrots, collards, corn, cucumber, eggplant, okra, peppers, sweet potato, pumpkin, melon, and yams.

Tomato and squash can be transplanted, but it is getting too late to sow seeds. Now is the time to sow pigeon peas. Remember, seed grown vs grafted, there’s no comparison, in regards to fruit trees and vegetables!

If you have a green desert, I mean lawn, you may need to increase irrigation during the month of March. It is usually warm, dry, and breezy, and green deserts, I mean lawns, will likely require more water than usual at the moment.

Be aware also that weeds are about to get crazy.

It is coming into the time of year that they like to party. Now is a good time to apply pre-emergent herbicides if you wish to encourage your green desert. Lawns provide no food for anything other

than pests that cause damage, hence my calling them deserts.

Ecologically they are a desert, unless some “weeds” are allowed to intermingle. The only productive part of a lawn are the weeds in between.

If no pre-emergents are applied, it will soon be time to apply postemergents, if you need that “perfect” lawn. Increasing the frequency of mowing will help develop a thicker lawn to help squeeze out some of the “weeds”. I don’t disagree that lawns can be nice, but do a few weeds make all that much difference to the way a lawn looks? Food for thought.

How a sickly boy grew up to be the master of horror

Sir Christopher Ondaatje writes about the Irish author best known for his 1897 Gothic horror novel Dracula.

How blessed are some people, whose lives have no fears, no dreads; to whom sleep is a blessing that comes nightly, and brings nothing but sweet dreams.”

- Bram Stoker Dracula, 1897 Abraham “Bram” Stoker was born on November 8, 1847 on the north side of Dublin, Ireland.

Stoker was the third of seven children. His parents were members of the Church of Ireland, Parish of Clontarf. Bram’s father, also Abraham, was a senior civil servant.

Stoker was bedridden with a strange illness until he was seven, when he made a complete recovery. He was educated in a private school run by the Reverend William Woods. When he was 17 he went to Trinity College in Dublin (1864-1870), graduating with honours in mathematics. He was auditor of the College Historical Society and President of the University Philosophical Society, where his first paper was on sensationalism in Fiction and Society.

While working for the Irish Civil Service he became theatre critic for the Dublin Evening Mail.

In December 1876, he gave a favourable review to Henry Irving’s Hamlet at the Theatre Royal in Dublin. It changed his life. Henry Irving invited Stoker to dinner and they became friends. Stoker had already written the non-fiction book The Duties of Clerks of Petty Sessions in Ireland – eventually published in 1879.

In 1878, Stoker married the celebrated beauty Florence Balcombe, who had been a suitor of Oscar Wilde. Wilde, who had proposed Stoker’s membership of the Philosophical Society at Trinity College, was visibly upset by Florence Balcombe’s decision.

Bram Stoker and his wife moved to London where his friendship with Henry Irving resumed – the latter invited Stoker to become acting manager and then business manager of Irving’s Lyceum Theatre in London, which he owned. It was a post he held for 24 years, becoming involved in London’s high society, meeting celebrities of the day, like artist James Abbott McNeill Whistler, the actress Ellen Terry, and the author of “Sherlock Holmes” stories, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

STOKER’s wife, Florence Balcombe, was considered a great beauty For six years in the 1890s, Stoker, continuing to manage Irving’s Lyceum Theatre, researched a work initially titled “The Un-Dead”, but eventually changed it to the Wallachian word for “Devil” (or son of Dracul) – Dracula.

BRAM STOKER, who stood 6’2, in 1906 The Stokers’ only child, a son, was born on December 31, 1879. They christened him Irving Noel Thornley Stoker.

Working for Henry Irving, the most famous actor of his time, and managing the most successful theatre in London, made Stoker a notable and busy man. He travelled the world, including the United States, where Irving was popular.He was twice invited to the White House and knew William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. He also met Walt Whitman - one of his literary idols.

“Stoker’s private life is a locked cabinet. One biographer, Daniel Farson, a remote descendant, plausibly deduces that after the birth of one child, ...

Florence withdrew conjugal access, protecting the Dresden-china looks which, even ten years later, led George du Maurier to rank her as one of the three most beautiful women in London. Farson believes that Stoker resorted to actresses and prostitutes and contracted syphilis: something that speculation can link with the infectious vampire kiss.”

Stoker never travelled to Eastern Europe, but after meeting Armin Vámbéry, a HungarianJewish writer and traveller, he spent several years studying Central and East European folklore in the British Museum. He was certainly influenced

by Vámbéry’s dark stories of the Carpathian Mountains, Transylvania, and vampires. Stoker probably took the name from Vlad III (1431 0 1476) – the notoriously cruel Prince of Wallachia, known as Vlad Darcula, or Vlad the Impaler in present day Romania.

Stoker spent month-long holidays in Cruden Bay, the Aberdeenshire coastal village in Scotland, between 1893 and 1910. Two other novels The Watter’s Mou’ (1895) and The Mystery of the Sea (1902) were written here, and he started writing Dracula in 1895 in the Kilmarnock Arms Hotel.

The nearly Slains Castle and its octagonal hall matches the description of the octagonal room in Dracula’s castle. Dracula, the novel, is a collection of fictional diary entries, logs, and newspaper clippings which provide realistic drama to Stoker’s story.

STOKER managed London’s Lyceum Theatre for 24 years. Since 1999, it’s been showing the musical “The Lion King”

SLAINS Castle in Scotland probably served as inspiration for Dracula’s castle success – nor would it be until the 1922 screen version, Nosferatu, which fuelled the book’s fame and international best selling fortune. The Lyceum Theatre closed in 1902 and Henry Irving no longer needed the services of Stoker. After a series of strokes, Irving died in 1905.

- Bram Stoker Bram Stoker died seven years later on April 20, 1912 at 26 St George’s Square in London. He too had a series of strokes but managed to produce a number of novels, including Dracula’s Guest and Other Weird Stories, later published posthumously

in 1914. Stoker’s death certificate named the cause of death as “Locomotor Ataxia 6 months” presumed to be a reference to syphilis. He was cremated and his ashes placed in a display urn at Golders Green Crematorium in North London.

Florence Stoker survived her husband by 25 years, many of which were plagued by copyright disputes. When the German expressionist horror film Nosferatu, starring Max Shrenk as Count Orlok, was released in 1922, Florence sued the filmmakers, complaining that she had neither been asked for permission nor paid any royalty. She was represented by the attorneys of the British Incorporated Society of Authors. The case dragged on

VLAD the Impaler (portrait ca. 1560) for several years, with Florence demanding that the negative and all prints of the film be destroyed.

The suit was finally decided in July 1925 in favour of Stoker’s widow. A single print of the film survived however and has become a classic masterpiece of early horror film history.

“As phoney as a three-dollar bill”

ack in the 1960s, the Bahamas government decided to decimalise our currency by replacing pounds, shillings and pence (written as £-s-d) with the Bahamian Dollar, which we have now been using for over 50 years.

The change took place on Wednes- FORGOTTEN FACTS day, May 25, 1966 at an exchange rate of B$2.80 for £1.

The average Bahamian had little trouble with understanding and working with the new Bahamian Dollar because we were all used to dealing with small amounts of US Dollars on a daily basis.

It was, however, a huge project for businesses, which had to convert all of their selling prices and re-label their merchandise before May 25.

City Meat Market assigned a comptometer operator to convert the price of each and every item of their inventory – thousands of items – and I offered to help. There were 240 pennies in a pound, and we started by creating a conversion table, starting with one penny, two pennies, three pennies, etcetera. That was the easy part.

Converting the price of each item was timeconsuming, but an interesting challenge, and we completed the job with time to spare.

Dollar-shopping at City Meat was straightforward and soon became second nature, but knowing the value of big items (homes, cars, and the like) tended to be confusing.

A £25,000 piece of real estate suddenly became $70,000. Some new cars that sold for £750 suddenly cost the buyer $2,100. It took a while to get comfortable with bigger numbers that did not make one richer, though it looked nice on one’s monthly bank statement (if not overdrawn).

Sir Stafford Sands was the Minister for Finance and Tourism and it was his idea to have $3 bills, his reasoning being that, because the United States did not have a US$3. (There is an American expression “As phoney as a three-dollar bill.”)

He believed that many tourists would get a thrill by taking B$3 bills back home. Those bills will have gone out of circulation, giving a net profit of $3 to the Bahamas Treasury.

I went to my bank to chat with the manager, who had been away on vacation. He had flown to Miami, rented a car and driven to California

and back and he had taken a thick wad of B$3 bills with him.

Whenever he bought anything (drinks, food, gas, hotel rooms) he would include one of his Bahamian bills in his payment.

Of course, the merchant could not accept Bahamian money and the manager would take it back and apologise for his ‘error’. Inevitably, the merchant offered to buy the Bahamian note and was happy to pay more than the face value, yielding enough profit to pay for the rental car and gasoline.

Another oddity was a foursided 15-cent coin. Originally it was designed as a replacement for a shilling, though the shilling was worth only 14 cents.

This coin became a popular collector’s item, with more profit to the Bahamas Treasury. It is seldom seen today.

Baby, it’s cold outside

By KIM ARANHA Animal Matters Whilst we in the Bahamas have been enjoying this wonderful cool winter weather, further north they have been battling with the consequences of an unseasonably cold winter.

Everybody is affected by cold weather and freezing temperatures, be it humans or animals. The homeless crowd into makeshift shelters thrown together in a hurry by good Samaritans; stray dogs and cats huddle together to share bodily warmth, and birds burrow deeper into the shrubs and bushes to find warmth.

Every animal and human is affected by climate change, some more than others, but it is a scary fact that we cannot run away from: there is no beach deep enough for us to hide our heads in the sand and ignore this glaring truth. Our necks are simply not long enough! We must face reality.

While many of us do care and do want to assist and make things better for animals during these cold snaps, we often overlook those needing the most help and attention.

I briefly mention that the tree iguana, when completely overcome by the cold weather, passes into a comatose state, causing him to literally fall out of the tree he is in. These poor creatures are cold-blooded and cannot handle temperatures in the 30s or 40s, and it is important to note that they are not indigenous to South Florida. In fact, they were first seen in the Miami area in the 1960s.

Perhaps they came in as eggs in plant imports or as a few pets negligently released. Nevertheless, they are there in the hundreds and when it gets cold you literally might have to dodge dropping iguanas from hitting you in the head. Sadly, when in that comatose state they can be the subject to unthinkable cruelty. If you are ever in Florida and see a “dead” iguana under a tree, and it’s cold, please call the wildlife services.

On the Gulf Coast they have been working overtime assisting turtles in serious trouble because of their intolerance to cold water.

The BBC reported “thousands of cold-stunned turtles were rescued as temperatures dropped to record lows in Texas this month.”

They were taken to sanctuaries where the water was warmed and nursed back to health. These lucky turtles are held until the water in the Gulf of Mexico has warmed up to an acceptable temperature.

Sea turtles are vulnerable to cold water, which hinders their freedom of movement.

Wendy Knight of the non-profit Sea Turtle Inc reports that “they’ll drown in the water if not rescued”.

The condition that volunteers are working overtime to protect turtles from, is called “cold stunning”. The sea turtle website describes it as follows: “Cold stunning may lead to shock, pneumonia, frostbite, and potentially death, as they are not able to migrate to warmer waters.”

When rescued, the turtle is placed in a dry tub for evaluation. They will be warmed up slowly and, when appropriate, placed in water and closely monitored by rehab staff.

Once fully recovered, the turtles are released.

olin of the big brown eyes and winsome smile is easy to miss in the paddocks with his more rambunctious roommates. He’s very laid back and quite mellow, but friendly, and happy to meet new people and dogs.

Colin is about two years old and would love to find a home that appreciates his approach to the world. Walks would be appreciated,

numbers this year because it has been a particularly cold winter for them.

We can but thank the Lord that there are people who care about the environment enough to go out of their way to report and help these wonderful creatures.

It brings me back to a much-loved topic of mine and that is how we are not paying sufficient attention to the worry of climate change and how climate change can cause some very serious repercussions. Global warming is really a bit of a misnomer because within climate change there is change of atmospheric conditions not just limited to additional warmth, but can mean additional rains, storms, ice and other meteorological changes.

The sudden cold that the southern states have experienced could have posed a huge threat to the wildlife if there were not so many responsible groups who care enough to snap into action and put a plan in to place to save the animals that are put at risk.

We are all the masters of our own actions, and during this COVID era we have had time to sit back and watch the world around us evolve.

We have had the privilege of seeing that without human interference the world is gradually returning to normal in certain aspects, but others may have been irrevocably damaged, and it is essential to lend a helping hand to Mother Nature where she is simply not able to cope.

The turtles have become fragile all over the world and we must be their custodians.

Cardell McClam’s new collection finally sees ‘Daylight’

The focus of the designer’s usual showcases is always heavy on evening wear, however, this time around his collection is reflective of the social atmosphere we find ourselves in.

“The pandemic has put a dent in events, especially nightly activities, so people are now enjoying social time during the daylight,” he explained.

“A heavy underlining theme in the garments is daytime fancy dress. The mens’ clothing are items guys can wear for an important lunch, a seminar or an excursion. The same for the ladies’garments.

It’s not so much about nighttime, but because of curfews and earlier outings, it’s about brunches and beaching,” he said.

As for the event itself, he said people can expect a “well rounded” show, featuring not only the collection on the catwalk, but also comedy by Myz Priceless Woods, entertainment by hype man DjFAB DA Future, a modern vogue presentation by Jonathan Sturrup, an energetic dancer troop and poets, as well as presentations by TV

AVING toiled for almost a year, practically reworking his entire vision, Bahamian designer Cardell McClam is now ready to unveil his latest collection, “Daylight”.

The collection’s name, he explains, represents the fresh start and new life the collection has taken on over time.

And fashion lovers will have a chance to see the collection during a special showcase at The Courtyard at the Dundas Centre for Performing Arts.

The festivities begin at 2.30pm this Sunday.

“Every year we put out a collection. The garments display our perspective of where fashion is headed or our take on future trends,” the designer told Tribune Weekend.

“Our collection would have debuted November 22, 2020 and it would have been called ‘Pharaoh’.

However, because of the pandemic and lockdowns we were unable to showcase as originally planned. Ultimately, we settled on not only a new date but also a different venue and show style.

With all the changes, the original theme didn’t seem to fit any more. After having toiled for so long to bring this collection to light...we decided on a name the reflects our hope for a new beginning: ‘Daylight’. It means for us a fresh start despite what we’ve been through and a hope for a new day.”

For the new collection, Cardell uses colours associated with morning, including light blues, yellows and whites. Adding some pizzazz to the mix, he has also incorporated some floral pieces in pinks and greens.

“Of course, we’ve also used colours indicative of the sky just before and at dawn. We have a navy blue and a little black and deep warm burgundy.

Personality and author Jeminita Swain, and author Terran Brice.

“It is most gratifying that all of the above entertainers have prepared their material around our central theme, daylight, and we love that. The runway promises a little something for everyone: men’s wear, petite women’s apparel and fullfigured garments. We refer to this collection as ‘it’s a Bahamian thing’; the music and atmospheric setting will reflect such,” said Cardell.

Immediately after the show, the designer will begin preparing for his next showcase, set tentatively for November.

“It will be a return to our usual format. Besides that, we are also engaged in an exciting new TV platform. We are the feature of a segment that’s a part of Bahamas at Sunrise called ‘It’s Fashion with Cardell McClam’,” he said.

“It’s Fashion” is a regularly scheduled segment that uses Cardell’s expertise as a stylist to spotlight local influencers, designers and stores.

“We are excited about this enterprise and look forward to it flourishing,” he said.
