Dionisio calls on cruise lines to strike a fairer deal for local tourism By NEIL HARTNELL Tribune Business Editor nhartnell@tribunemedia.net A CABINET minister yesterday urged the cruise lines to “not dump on the destination” given that they often created “insurmountable thresholds” for Bahamian entrepreneurs to do business with them. Minister of Tourism and Aviation Dionisio D’Aguilar said he wanted to give “a little bit of push back” to criticisms by Carnival Cruise Lines executives that Nassau lacked fresh product - particularly new and exciting attractions and tours - to entice
passengers off ships when the industry returns after COVID-19. Calling for a more equal partnership between The Bahamas and the cruise industry, Mr D’Aguilar said the latter’s practice of adding its own mark-up to the fee levied by Bahamian providers was effectively pricing local tours and excursions out of the market. Arguing cruise lines also needed to adjust their own practices, he added that their mark-ups often gave passengers the impression there was “no value for money” in leaving the ship. AFTER weeks of being prey to online political mischief, the Progressive Liberal Party is fighting back and its leader, Philip “Brave” Davis has written to Facebook’s headquarters to have it stopped. Mr Davis is petitioning the powerful and popular social media platform to change the internal policies that currently allow “fake organisations” to use the platform to spread their messages. He said the accounts are trying to “subvert” The Bahamas’
democracy. In a letter addressed to Jennifer Newstead, Facebook’s vice president and general counsel, and Henry Moniz, Facebook’s chief compliance officer, Mr Davis listed 11 “fake” Facebook accounts that he said are using the PLP’ logo and sullying the party’s reputation. In the letter, he said free and fair elections are the cornerstones of Bahamian democracy and the fake accounts are distorting and harming public discourse in the country ahead of the 2022 scheduled general election. By LEANDRA ROLLE Tribune Staff Reporter lrolle@tribunemedia.net ADMITTING that she is not “necessarily” happy about being the only woman in Cabinet, West Grand Bahama and Bimini MP Pakesia Parker-Edgecombe pledged yesterday to help facilitate the entry of more women into politics as she feels the group is underrepresented in this area. Her comments came after the Cabinet Office on Tuesday announced her new appointment as minister of state for disaster preparedness, management and reconstruction, which will make her the only woman Cabinet minister in the Minnis administration since the shock resignation of Lanisha Rolle last week. ‘WE’RE BEING GIVEN NO RESPECT’ By RASHAD ROLLE Tribune Senior Reporter rrolle@tribunemedia.net POLICE Commissioner Paul Rolle issued letters yesterday to three Assistant Commissioners of Police – Clayton Fernander, Kendal Strachan and Leamond Deleveaux – that extends their “special assignment” at various government ministries for a further two years.
ASSISTANT Commissioner of Police Clayton Fernander. But according to their attorney, Wayne
Munroe, ACP Fernander encountered a startled Permanent Secretary who did not know why he was there when he showed up to the Ministry of Health yesterday “This is all a continuation of the farce they started two years ago and a poor use of police resources,” Mr Munroe said. The three senior officers were among those who SEE PAGE FOUR
