After traditional pain meds nearly caused him irrecoverable kidney damage, this Grand Bahamian turned to an alternative source of relief: medical marijuana. The former basketball player tells Cara Hunt about overcoming racial prejudice to open his own cannabis farm in California, and speaks about his hopes for a future industry in the Bahamas.

A

s a former basketball player who often nursed sports injuries, Elliot Hepburn-Marshall knows first-hand what it feels like to live with chronic pain.

After doctors explained that his constant use of pain medication was impacting his kidneys, the Grand Bahama native looked into the benefits of medical marijuana, which led him to a new career helping others find their own alternative pain relief.

Elliot, who now lives in Northern California, opened up a new marijuana dispensary called Livity earlier this month.

The store is a full-service supplier of recreational and medicinal cannabis available in a variety of forms such as gummies, seeds, vapes and plants.

Livity is the Rastafarian spiritual concept of righteous “everliving” living. It’s essence is the realisation that an energy or life force conferred by the Almighty exists within and flows through all people and living things.

“I also have a friend who has an alkaline-based restaurant called Livity and that and its meaning is why I chose the name,” he explained.

The new store is just an other step in his business’ expansion into the world of cannabis distribution which started about a decade ago with his Proper Rx Collective.

Initially, Elliot moved to the US to play basketball at the high school and collegiate levels.

“I played shooting guard, and while basketball was not necessarily my passion, it was a means to gain an

education and a way to take care of my family,” he said.

After retiring from a stint at the professional level, Elliot utilised his degree in Psychology and began working at a home for troubled individuals when he lucked into his career.

“During my basketball career I had had several knee surgeries and I was in chronic pain. I was taking three to four extra strength Advil to deal with the pain and inflammation in my knees every day,” he said.

“But the medicines were also causing me to have problems with my kidneys. I would wake up with throbbing kidney pains, and my doctor eventually told me that if I didn’t stop with the pain medication my kidneys would be really damaged. So I started researching alternative treatments for pain and found out that cannabis was a great alternative.”

He also found employment working at a cannabis dispensary on a part-time basis, where his job was to ensure that the patients coming in had the right paperwork, such as legal ID and a doctor’s letter of recommendation to receive their supplies.

“I started noticing that a lot of these patients had really bad illnesses such as MS, AIDS, cancer, and they were really in a lot of pain. It was difficult to watch them, because they would pull up to the dispensary and it would take 20 to 30 minutes for them to get out the car and try to make it inside.

They were in wheelchairs and using walkers, and then after coming in for about a minute they would have to take another 20 to 30 minutes to get back to their car, and that’s how I came

Elliot soon realised his company filled a tremendous need in the community. “Particularly because I live in California and Californians are very sceptical about medicine. They are very much into alternative medical options like marijuana and hyperbaric oxygen chambers.”

“California leads the country in these types of alternative treatment,” he added.

When it comes to medical marijuana, he said there is a definite demand for the plant-based medicine, but the industry is extremely difficult to get into, particularly for a young black man like himself.

“This is an area that is predominately, 99 percent white-owned and by conglomerates, and so people treated me like I didn’t belong. And because they don’t want people like to me to enter it they set the licence fees extremely high and there are a lot of legal requirements that you have to go through before you can get an actual licence.”

Even after cutting through all the red tape, Elliot still faced discrimination when he met people face-to-face and they realised he was black.

“This is an area that is predominately, 99 percent whiteowned and by conglomerates, and so people treated me like I didn’t belong.”

It got so bad he decided to stay behind the scenes and not publicise that he was CEO of Proper Rx. Instead, he let his white employees be the public face of the company.

“It was a just a part of the process,” he said.

Elliot focused on building his business and his clientele. He also started his own marijuana farm so that he could produce his own supplies.

“That in itself is a science that you have to learn because you want to ensure that the soil regiment is constant so that your potency and quality and texture is always the same.”

Given the success he’s had with his business and the health benefits he knows it provides, Elliot is a proponent of legalising medicinal marijuana in the Bahamas.

He applied to be the first authorised seller of medical marijuana in the country. He is also a member of the Bahamas National Commission on Marijuana.

Elliot said there are so many opportunities that could open to Bahamians, most importantly the health benefits given the high incidences of cancer, diabetes and other such illnesses where pain regulation can be factor.

He is also a strong proponent of Bahamians having the bigger stake in the industry. If the market were open up, he said, it could be a major economic boost for the local economy.

“Our report is in the hands of the Prime Minister now,” he said, “and so we are waiting to see what he will do. Even if we are given a green light, it would take some time to get things implemented.”

A splash of creative freedom

EW paintings by artist and designer Jewel Smith will once again be translated to fabric as her luxury lifestyle brand that marries art and fashion continues to blossom.

Beach By Jewel, launched in 2019, is now expanding to include five new paintings as part of the Painting Free 2020 collection. Those paintings will all be transferred to fabrics that will become luxury swim and resort wear pieces.

Jewel’s lifestyle brand was inspired by Harbour Island and is the product of years of hard work, research, trial and error. However, Jewel now believes she has found the right rhythm to making everything work.

“I’ve been painting quite a lot, working on perfecting and developing new techniques. Continuing to expand my Beach By Jewel luxury lifestyle brand, and venturing into interior design. I’m enjoying the Harbour Island lifestyle, exploring other areas of business here, with luxury rentals, procurement services and estate liquidations in Nassau. I’m working on everything that brings me joy,” she told Tribune Weekend.

The Painting Free 2020 collection features predominantly abstract pieces. While there are only five paintings in this collection so far, Jewel said she is working on more which will be revealed at a later time.

Harbour Island and the ocean have been the main sources of inspiration for Jewel’s abstract art.

The final piece in this series, “Splashing Blows”, was

inspired by the late Jackson Pollock, a famous American painter and key figure in the abstract expressionist movement. The piece also inspired a four-page poem written by Jewel’s father, poet and author Obediah M Smith.

“I loved using blues and throwing in a splash of brighter colours you’d see on the many roosters roaming the island. Also, Jackson Pollock has been a great inspiration as well. I studied his work in college and during my holiday I spent some time watching a few documentaries on his style of painting. I’d been wanting to try his technique but still make it my own. I’ve been curious about painting on different types of fabrics. I came across a Sunbrella fabric and was excited to see how the paint would react with this fabric using the Pollock technique. It was so much fun, watching the paint expand when it hit the fabric, then retract into a number of little balls, or lines here and there, and watching the colours blend together to create tiny cells. There is so much for the eye to capture, so many different parts that create one completed piece. I’m very pleased with each piece so far for this season,” she said.

Of this collection, Jewel said she is most fond of the piece entitled “Red Snapper”.

“I acquired a piece of wood, which I believe to be white pine. I loved this piece of wood. So smooth and glossy on one side, with the wood grains showing through beautifully, and just the right thickness. Sometimes I begin with a concept in mind, but more often I find myself creating as I go along and just

go where the paint takes me.

Which could be whipping, blowing, stroking, or smearing the paint. This was my process for creating ‘Red Snapper’.

I very much enjoyed creating this piece; I allowed my mind to be free to create what I felt in the moment. When I completed this piece, then went back to the drying rack, my little ‘Red Snapper’ had appeared, I was in love. This piece was unlike any of my previous work, I felt a sense of achievement. My work was now becoming more advanced and evolving into something different,” she said.

The final product sometimes surprises her, but the process is almost always satisfying.

“I think I’ve grown a lot.

There is still a bit of wildness in the way I create each piece, but at the same time it’s a little more controlled. I enjoyed my first body of work, but now I’m feeling a bit more settled in who I am as an artist,” she said.

Jewel’s next step is to create the fabric prints for her brand.

“I’m so excited to see my paintings translated to fabric prints once again. I also plan to add two additional prints to my custom fabric print collection from this new collection of paintings. I’m also excited as I anticipate being commissioned by clients for private projects in interior design.

Whether it’s creating largescale paintings, or custom fabric prints for drapes, upholstery, wallpapers and more. That’s going to be very exciting,’ she said.

Pottery studio seeks to fire up the youth

ith a mandate to help keep art alive in the community, Atlantis will be targeting youngsters for its upcoming “Earth Initiative” at the resort’s pottery studio.

The Earth and Fire Pottery Studio has become a popular field trip destination for students and their teachers from both private and government schools, said Sheridan Wilson, the studio’s manager.

Located in the Beach Tower, the pottery studio was established for both hotel guests and locals as “artistic sanctuary”, she added.

“It was designed as a place where persons have the opportunity to create ceramic mementos. Over the years, the Earth and Fire Pottery Studio has blossomed into a quiet getaway for art lovers.”

In addition to instruction in painting ceramics, the studio also offers daily glass fusing classes.

“Glass fusing is simply the process of melting glass. Customers can create glass fused bowls, plates and mosaics. We teach you how to use specific tools for glass, and with the guidance of our trained staff you are well on your way to creating a beautiful piece of artwork,” said Ms Wilson.

Word has also been spreading about the studio’s interactive classes which have as their end result canvas paintings that participants can take home and put on display. These classes are held Thursdays to Saturday in the evening hours. All of the paint classes include unlimited

wine, salsa dip, mixed nuts and tortilla chips.

“Being creative and thinking outside of the box is what is allowing us to gain such popularity with our paint classes. We have a 70s throwback paint party where we groove to the sounds of 70s’ music. You are given 70s’ throwback shades and a cute necklace and the piece is indicative of the 70s. We have added to our list of unique promotions a karaoke sip and paint party. Guests are in a relaxing atmosphere and they belt out karaoke tunes as they paint. Being an entertainer myself, this is obviously my favourite “ said Ms Wilson.

“Besides, the more you drink, the better your piece looks and the better your rendition of your song can be.”

It is important keep the love for art alive, she said, because it cane serve as an avenue to release the stress that has built up over time.

“You don’t have to be some type of Picasso to enjoy our offerings; when you walk through our doors it is our job to bring out the little artist in you,” said Ms Wilson.

“We are constantly evolving and keeping up with the latest trends so that we can remain current and interesting to our customers. We can now boast that we have two local ceramicists, Trevor Tucker and Jessica Colebrooke, that supply us with authentic Bahamian ceramic pieces that you will not be able to find anywhere else. We listen to our customers and try to please them in every way we can.”

Classic play 'Diary of Souls' returns to explore pertinent issues

T

here are three more opportunities for theatre lovers to catch Dr Ian Strachan’s classic, “Diary of Souls”, a play that gives voice to the angst surrounding Haitian migration and the silent torment of Bahamian marines.

The play opened last weekend as the second show in Ringplay Production’s 2020 repertory season at the Dundas Centre for Performing Arts. Additional performances are scheduled for tonight and Saturday at 6pm and for Sunday at 8pm.

Considered my many as the most relevant Bahamian play for our times, “Diary of Souls” is based on the true story of a Haitian vessel that capsized on Independence Day 1990 off the coast of Blackpoint, Exuma, resulting in the drowning and mass burial of reportedly 39 Haitians, though many involved believe the number to be much higher.

Dr Strachan tells the story of those events through the voices of five characters, including three Haitians and a Defence Force marine who was psychologically troubled by the experience.

“This play honours all those who risk their lives on the sea in our archipelago.

It doesn’t matter whether they are migrants braving a difficult journey or marines seeking to intercept them.

The sea is our mother. She knows where all the bones are,” said Dr Bethel.

An interesting fact; all three actors who portray Haitian characters in this production have roots in Haiti.

I cannot believe how difficult that story must have been for those actors to tell. The play ... had me angry, it had

me furious, it had me thinking more than anything, and it had me focussed. It made me ask what I could do to help.”

Music director Adrian Archer also recommends the play.

“I urge you to go and see Ian Strachan’s ‘Diary of Souls’—you won’t be the same when it’s done ....brilliant acting that challenges our very humanity.” “ ‘Diary of Souls’ confirms what many believe the objective of theatre is: to unearth the truth, to give voice to silenced experiences, to look at the choices that shape a nation, to ask the hard questions and allow us our own answers,” said Patrice Francis, who is also an executive member of Ringplay Productions.

Bahamian artist Jason Evans designed a set that transports the audience to the place where the stories of the play’s characters are being told.

Ms Francis added: “A passionate crew of young people round out the production team, allowing lighting and sound design to be the wordless tellers of this soulstirring tale.”

'The Messenjah' set to deliver pure vibes

uciano, the king of “conscious reggae”, will deliver his message during an up-close and personal musical experience tomorrow night.

Also known to reggae lovers as “The Messenjah”, the singer will bring “pure vibes” when he performs some of his top hits like “It’s Me Again Jah”, “How Can You” and “Lord Give Me Strength”.

The exclusive event is presented by In-House and will be held at Karma, Prince George Wharf.

Also performing will be Judah Tha Lion along with his band.

“Judah will be coming on with his live band before to set the atmosphere,” said event organiser Eric Russell.

In addition to the live music there will be henna tattoos, cigar rolling, giveaways, prizes and drink specials.

In the intimate setting, Luciano will be moving through the crowd and interacting with audience members. And although it is not an unplugged event

it will have an “unplugged feeling”.

“We wanted someone who is familiar, whose sounds are timeless and someone who just represents pure good vibes; our slogan is ‘pure good vibes’. When we went to the drawing board we were thinking about who would be a great artist to bring over to kick-start the new year and Luciano was that artist,” said Mr Russell.

Luciano, a singer, songwriter, musician and producer, was born Jepther Washington McClymont an has reigned as the king of “conscious reggae” music for over two decades.

Born in Davyton in the parish of Mandeville, Jamaica, Luciano was influenced by reggae icons such as Bob Marley and Dennis Brown. As a youth he was heavily drawn to the positive message of the “one love movement”.

Named Luciano after opera legend Luciano Pavarotti, his voice resonates with inflection, tone range and pitch.

In the early part of 1993, Luciano collaborated

with reggae ambassador Freddie McGregor on his “Big Ship Music” label, resulting in a UK charttopping cover of Cheryl Lynn’s R&B hit “Shake it Up Tonight”. As this song climbed to No 1, his name spread like wildfire amongst reggae’s top producers, one of which was Phillip “Fattis” Burrell, whom he collaborated with and released the critically acclaimed single “Moving Up” later in 1993 on the Xterminator label via VP Records. It was not long after that

Chris Blackwell (founder of Island Records known for signing artists like Bob Marley and U2) took note and signed Luciano to Island/Mango Records.

His 1995 album “Where There is Life” garnered a string No 1 hits like “It’s Me Again Jah”, “Lord Give Me Strength”, “Your World and Mine” and “Who Could It Be”, propelling him to the top of the conscious reggae music scene.

Versatile in many ways, Luciano also taught himself to play instruments

like the guitar, flute and piano.

“He will be bringing his acoustic guitar and he will be doing his set performing some old music and newer pieces. It will just really be a laid-back, mellow kind of night. It will be a great night to hear one of the greatest conscious reggae performers of all time,” said Mr Russell.

oongalik Studios officially opens its new exhibition, “Awakening”

by Katerina Kovatcheva, this Monday starting at 6pm.

“Awakening” is a showcase of 30 paintings dealing with a variety of subject matters in various mediums. This is the artist’s second solo exhibition at Doongalik, and her audience is always very receptive to her range of offerings.

“As an artist I am interested in creating works of art that call for the participation of the audience to the same extent as my own involvement in it. I enjoy experimenting with different textures and media and exploring new mediums and techniques. I love the freedom, spontaneity and energy that watercolours provide for. I enjoy the vibrant bold strokes that oil and acrylic can convey.

I love the accuracy of the graphite pencils, charcoal and soft pastels. Every different medium hand technique gives me the ability to explore and express my ideas in a variety of ways,” said Katerina.

“I am also interested in painting nature and animals, and expressing human emotions, in particular, in my art.

I find it my passion to observe things and always find something extraordinary within the very ordinary.”

Katerina Kovatcheva is a Bulgarian-born artist, graphic designer and art teacher who is a permanent resident of the Bahamas, which she and her family have called home for the past 20 years. She has participated in solo and group exhibitions in Bulgaria, Slovenia, Kosovo, the Czech Republic, Albania, Portugal, Indonesia, Hong Kong,

Ukraine, Italy and the US, and has won numerous awards and recognition for her outstanding artistic themes over the years all over the world.

Katerina holds a Master’s of Art degree awarded by the Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia, Bulgaria. After graduation, she worked as a fashion designer, as an artist for a publishing company and as an art teacher. Later,

she worked for various hotel chains and institutions around the world; as an independent portrait artist, caricature artist, stage design coordinator and design planner, as well as a coordinator for artistic projects and themes for multiple hotel institutions such as the RIU Hotel and Resorts in the Dominican Republic and Atlantis, Paradise Island in the Bahamas, amongst others, as well as with annual events, workshops and exhibitions held both at home and abroad.

Katerina is also the designated representative of the International Watercolor Society for the Bahamas.

Katerina speaks five languages and has an earnest passion for teaching. She has devoted many years to the education of students in many Bahamian schools, government and private alike, working as an art and craft teacher for all levels of students from grade one to pre-college. She is currently a teacher at Temple Christian High School where she teaches art and design.

Karin says: “I love that Janelle is venturing into the world of bright colours. We all love her black and white signature style, but this is very nice on her. The only thing I don’t like is that it appears to be made out swimsuit material; makes it a bit cheap looking.”

Cara says: “I love elements of her outfit. However, not as a whole. I love her hair and the top; she looks gorgeous as usual. The skirt is also very lovely and I love the orange, but I just don’t like it all together as an ensemble.”

Karin says: “From a distance this looked great, but close up...sheesh.

First of all, I love the mint green; that’s fine. I can also live with the not-quite-right-fitting bodice, but that thing in the middle! It’s looks like she stuck a bunched up bedspread on her dress.”

Cara says: “Cynthia is killing the big gown look this awards season. I do like this dress, however, that top is just not working. It is not flattering to the boobs. It reduces the elegance and just makes it seem a tad bit sleazy.”

Karin says: “This just looks like a bedazzled version of businesswoman’s office look; like she overdid the bling trying to spice up a smart two-piece skirt suit. The length doesn’t work and the whole look appears dated.”

Cara says: “This dress is just dowdy. I think the length throws me off. It cuts her legs in half, especially with those shoes (which are gorgeous, but wasted on this outfit). I’ll give her a point or two for the cute side ponytail, but this is a no for me.”

Karin says: “This is a robe a soap opera villainess would wear for her big moment. It certainly makes a statement. It’s not my taste, but I don’t hate it, and I think she has the confidence to pull it off. What absolutely doesn’t work with dress, however, is that middle-parted helmet hairdo; just awful.”

Cara says: “This colour is lovely on her. Those sleeves make such a huge statement. I love it! I have to say I’m not 100 percent sold on the shoes, but this is a definite hit for me. Brava!”

Karin says: “I almost didn’t recognise her. She’s looking all demure. This patchwork print is pretty and unusual (are those bits of a lottery sheet?)

And I like the big updo, but you know what? I think I prefer the more outrageous Lizzo. Plus, she needs to match her foundation better.”

Cara says: “This is cute and very tame for Miss Lizzo. She looks great!

The pattern on her dress is quite interesting and very flattering. Her face is beat and that hair style is sooo cute.”

Karin says: “I’m baffled. I don’t understand. So OK, the dress itself isn’t that bad (a throwback prom dress, maybe?) it’s mainly those sheer, pearl-studded, opera-length gloves that ruin the picture. Why would that have be a style choice?

Cara says: “This is the hottest, messiest of the hot messes. This whole outfit is like an 80s mishap.

I don’t even know where to start: the top, which looks like the kinda off-the-shoulder T-shirt with the side knot that popular was back in the day, or the horrid tulle skirt. I almost expected her to have on ankle boots.”

Karin says: “This is a really Persian, Moroccan-influenced look and I love it! There is just so much detail in the bejewelled embroidery. The mini skirt length of the dress (which she can totally pull off with those long legs) perfectly balances out the high neck and long sleeves. And of course the hair is fab!”

Cara says: “This is such a big hit for me. The dress has stunning detail and such beautiful colours; just look at how the gold at the neckline gets recalled at the hem! And can we just sit and admire her hair which is so fabulous and so many hair goals.”

Karin says: “The top half looks like an undergarment a Rococo lady would have worn underneath her big hoop skirt. Meanwhile the bottom half (attached with red, white and blue rubber bands no less!) looks like something you sweep the floor with.

And those shoes don’t match with a single element of this mess.”

Cara says: “How is she even breathing in this corset? Lawd, her waist is really cinched! I like the pattern, but I am not feeling that weird semi-attached skirt thing at the bottom or those black and white 1950s’ saddle shoes.

This is a bit weird for me.”

New releases hitting shelves this week • Bent Heavens by Daniel Kraus (young adult)

World's largest book fair returns to Nassau Bahamian crew member invites you on board

T

he world’s largest floating book fair is returning to Nassau this March.

It’s been two years since OM’s Logos Hope last made port here and the crew said it is excited to visit the Bahamas again.

Bahamian Claudia Robb is one of the 400 volunteers on board. She joined the ship when it docked here during a previous visit and has since travelled the world with OM (Operation Mobilisation), a Christian missionary organisation founded in 1957.

Claudia felt her job in the Bahamas was limiting her and thought the Logos Hope could be a great new opportunity. After becoming part of the Logos Hope crew she began working for the book fair before being put in charge of the department of onshore events. She now oversees all events on board.

While the Logos Hope offers the public a wide variety of books, it is more than only a ‘book ship.’

“Be part of an international community and experience different cultures. First, you

think that things will be hard, but then you realise that people are people. I’ve spoken to many persons and heard of other crew members and visitors who, when they walk onboard, just feel an entirely different atmosphere,” said Claudia.

Like Claudia, all volunteers can share thousands of stories that they have collected on their journeys with the Logos Hope.

Claudia is one of the ship’s 400 volunteers who come from over 60 nations, leaving behind family, job and homes.

AS a member of the Logos Hope crew, Bahamian Claudia Robb has travelled the world.

The crew offers a unique example of unity in cultural diversity. Some come with qualifications to fill specific roles such as engineering officers, plumbers, carpenters, bookkeepers, cooks, and other professionals. Many young people come with no qualifications except the willingness to serve. Although they have different backgrounds, the crew members agree on a common goal: serving people through social service projects and good literature.

The now 5,000 individuals serving with OM around the world leave home and family to fulfill the organisation’s mandate: to minister in

faraway countries using their skills and talents to share the gospel, to mobilise believers, and to strengthen the faith of existing believers. OM serves in 110 countries plus aboard the Logos Hope.

Since 1970, the organisation has welcomed over 45 million visitors up the gangways in over 150 countries and territories around the world.

B-humane Awards honour heroes for animals

Former rock n’ roller, primary school student and community leaders among winners

T

he Bahamas Humane Society presents the B-humane Award yearly to those who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to help improve the lives of animals in the Bahamas.

The award is given to the winners during the “Party of the Animals” that is to be held at the National Trust Retreat on Village Road tomorrow evening. There will music, food, drinks and adult hoopla.

One of the highlights of the event will the performance by Ancient Man after the award presentation. Those wishing to attend can purchase tickets at the Fox Hill Nursery or the Bahamas Humane Society for $40, or at the door for $50.

The BHS is enormously proud of the winners this year.

Every year we are in awe of what these amazing people have accomplished and this year is not different.

The 2020 winners are as follows:

B-humane Individual Award (Nassau based) Laura Kimble was born and raised in Nassau. She was an animal lover from a young age and grew up in a home that believed in rescue and adopting, with pets ever present in the house.

After boarding school and attending university in Canada, Laura returned home to Nassau in 2005 where she got started with her career in real estate.

Laura served on the board of the Bahamas Humane Society from 2010 to 2017 as honorary secretary. During this time she embraced her love for animals and rescue.

Baark! (Bahamas Alliance for Animal Rights and Kindness) was formed in 2009 and Laura assumed co-chairmanship of the organisation from the very first day. Baark! rapidly morphed into the strong and well-oiled spay and neuter machine that it is today thanks to Laura’s tireless and selfless efforts and determination.

GEOFFREY Jones Co Ltd, this year’s Corporate Award recipient, is represented by their office cat Nefette.

Over the years, Laura has had her share of foster failures, but it is always a treat to hear of the circumstances involving her latest foundlings.

The more work Laura has done in the animal welfare world, the more passionately

dedicated and determined she is to spay and neuter as many animals as possible. She knows that spay and neuter is the only way forward.

Under Laura’s leadership Baark! has just celebrated its

10the anniversary, with over 11,000 dogs and cats fixed.

B-humane Individual Award (Out Island based) February 23, 1998 was most certainly a lucky day in the lives of potcakes in Andros.

This was the day Rick Goodlander first came to the island to work at AUTEC as chief of security and investigations.

Rick was born in Chicago and spent 12 years with the Air Force Security Police, and holds a degree in criminal justice.

His first encounter with a Royal Bahamian Potcake was when a friend brought a rescued runt to him to “foster for the weekend”. This first “foster fail” resulted in his canine companion called Inca being with him for more than 16 years.

Rick has been heavily involved with Stray Busters (subsequently Baark!) and then the Animal Balance/ Bahamas Humane Society’s “Operation Potcake”. He volunteered for “Operation Potcake” in 2013 and 2014, Animal Balance’s campaign in the Dominican Republic and Baark!’s campaigns in Eleuthera, San Salvador and Great Inagua. These campaigns catapulted his efforts in Andros to activism, reaching from Mangrove Cay in South Andros to Nicholl’s Town in North Andros.

Managing now over 14 spay/ neuter initiatives in Andros has resulted in well over 600

Abused and neglected canine companions have been Rick’s passion. He has dedicated time and effort to their survival, recovery and finding them special homes.

Additionally, Rick was an outspoken advocate during the canine distemper virus (CDV) outbreak in Andros, taking the lead in two mass vaccination initiatives supported by veterinarians and veterinary technicians from the BHS. The outbreak was successfully contained in the established “zone” in North/Central Andros.

Rick continues to advocate for proper and affordable companion animal care, animal rights and criminal justice reform under the umbrella of Potcakes of Andros, an informal group established to address the specific needs of Androsian potcakes and potcats.

B-humane Individual Award (International) Ric Browde spent his early years moving around the United States and Europe.

While attending university, he formed his first rock n’ roll band, that according to Ric, was not very good. Much to his amazement he landed himself a record deal. The record was never released and Ric found himself taking odd jobs to make ends meet: teaching English to foreigners, writing music for porno movies, and working as a roadie while

waiting for his big break in the music industry.

His break did come in the form of famous rock n’ roller Ted Nugent. Browde became his assistant and later fullon producer of the popular guitarist, working on seven albums including “Double Live Gonzo”, “Scream Dream” and “Intensities”.

After leaving Nugent, Ric started producing and co–writing albums. He has recorded 36 albums to date and sold over 29 million records, earning eight platinum and 11 gold records.

After having been involved in the music industry for 30 years, Ric felt it was time to do something different with his life and wrote the cult favourite novel “While I’m Dead…

Feed the Dog”. The book was initially published in 2000 and in 2003 was turned into the movie “Behaving Badly” starring Selena Gomez and Mary Louis Parker.

In 2003, he decided to try and atone for all the musical garbage (his words) he produced and decided to devote his energies to pet rescue, first volunteering in Los Angeles city and county shelters and later by joining Wings of Rescue in 2013.

He has been the president and CEO of Wings of Rescue since 2017. Since he took over the organisation they have flown over 30,000 pets to safety and flown in over 200 tonnes of humanitarian relief to hurricane victims, including 206,000 pounds of

aid to the Bahamas during Hurricane Dorian. Ric assisted the Bahamas Humane Society to airlift and home hundreds of dogs who were homeless after Dorian. He is a great and loving friend of the animals of this country.

Ric lives in Beverly Hills, California with his wife of 41 years, Holly, and his six dogs and four cats.

B-humane Corporate Award Geoffrey Jones started his company 50 years ago. He was an uncommonly gifted and accomplished electrician and his business grew quickly from its humble beginnings in electrical contracting and materials sales, and by 1970 the company had built a new shop, allowing a rapid expansion into retail trade. This was

followed by their designation in 1973 as the first – and to this day the only – authorised GE appliance service centre in the Bahamas.

By 1981, Geoffrey Jones had built a new and larger headquarters on the northwest corner of Rosetta and Montgomery Streets, where the business resides to this day. Today, Geoffrey Jones & Co Ltd is still a thriving family business run by the founder’s children and grandchildren.

As a company, Geoffrey Jones has been a generous and faithful friend to the Bahamas Humane Society in so many ways for many years. They are always there to donate a prize, help fix an air-conditioning unit, give us a break, or advise us on which appliances are appropriate for the shelter.

As they wrote upon acceptance of this award: “Whether selling, delivering or servicing your GE appliance; or installing and servicing your central air-conditioning ... we are committed to making your experience with us one that keeps you coming back.”

Individual B-humane Award (Junior) Skylar Kelly is the daughter of Charles and Candice Kelly.

She was raised to believe that the family potcake was her actual older sister. From the time she was a baby she

gravitated towards animals wherever she went.

She was an active participant at the BHS Summer camps where she first met camp coordinator and volunteer Shelley Hardmann.

Skylar became inspired to help the animals of the Bahamas. She created a variety of slime, which she sold at school and as a result was able to buy a huge bag of kibble to deliver to the BHS. Shortly after this, she was invited to a Potcake Puppy Palace Christmas event with a friend. She fell in love with the puppies and begged to go back again as often as possible.

Her love for the PPP started a series of fundraising events.

Lemonade stands, bake sales, a trunk sale, and basically asking anyone who would listen for money, food or volunteering their time.

In grade five (2018/19) she were assigned a project with the theme of community issues and solutions to present at a school exhibition. Her chosen issue was the overpopulation of potcakes and the solution: Baark’s spay and neuter programmes.

Skylar spent a few hours at the Liquid Courage spay and neuter clinic learning firsthand the importance of what Baark! does and she looks forward to the opportunity to assist with the next Nassau based clinic!

Skylar has been appointed Baark!’s junior ambassador.

She tries her best to live up to that title whenever her busy schedule allows.

Skylar is 11 years old, attends St Andrew’s International School and is now in sixth grade. Her hobbies include sailing, dancing and playing musical instruments.

She always wants to be a part of the animal rescue world and continues to try to make a difference in whatever small way she can. Her dedication will hopefully serve to inspire other youngsters to become involved in helping animals in the Bahamas and the world over.

A songwriter for the ages – Part II Sir Christopher Ondaatje continues with his article on the brilliant American composer and songwriter who wrote the lyrics as well as the music for his songs which were hits in the 1930s, 40s and 50s.

Hollywood jumped at the chance to offer Cole Porter work once he had achieved his fame. He wrote the score for Paramount’s “The Battle of Paris” starring Gertrude

Lawrence – but she was miscast and the film flopped.

The biographer Stephen Citron (”Noël and Cole: The Sophisticates”) writes that Porter was not in the least interested in movies and only wrote for them half-heartedly.

He lived for live theatre.

Porter’s last Broadway show of the 1920s was “Fifty Million Frenchmen” (1929) which includes “You Do Something to Me “and “You’ve Got That Thing”. It was an expensive production and the producers wanted to close it after three weeks. However, Irving Berlin took out a paid advertisement saying: “The best musical comedy I’ve heard in years ... the best collections of song numbers I have ever listened to.”

His report saved the show which went on to run for 254 performances.

In the 1930s, Porter’s producer E Ray Goetz went bankrupt following the Wall Street Crash slump. Nevertheless, he invited Porter to create a show about New York with Herbert Fields and Monty Woolley. That show, “The New Yorkers” (1930), achieved instant notoriety for including the song “Love for Sale” – originally performed in a street setting. Widespread critical disapproval caused Goetz to replace the song in a nightclub setting. Porter said it was one of his favourite songs.

Porter’s “Gay Divorce” (1932) starred Fred Astaire in his final stage show (without his sister Adele) and featured one of Porter’s best-known songs, “Night and Day”. It ran for 248 performances, was profitable, and the film rights were sold to RKO Pictures who retitled it “The Gay Divorcée”. He followed this with “Nymph Errant” (1933) with Gertrude Lawrence at the Adelphi Theatre in London.

of his two perfect shows (the other being “Kiss Me Kate” in 1948) – was the first of five times that he wrote the score for an Ethel Merman show. He loved her big, brassy voice and wrote several times especially for her. His songs included “I Got a Kick Out of You”, “All Through the Night”, “You’re the Top”, and “Blow, Gabriel, Blow”, as well as “Anything Goes” – the title number.

Cole Porter was now at the height of his success and he made grand entrances to the opening night of his musicals – sitting in the front row and enjoying each performance.

Russel Crouse (1893-1966), the American playwright and librettist, commented: “Cole’s opening-night behaviour is as indecent as that of a bridegroom who has a good time at his own wedding.”

“Jubilee” (1935), written with Moss Hart was not a resounding success but featured two Porter standards: “Begin the Beguine” and “Just One of Those Things”. Red, Hot and Blue (1936) again featured Ethel Merman, Jimmy Durante and Bob Hope and introduced “It’s De Lovely”, “Down in the Depths”, and “Ridin’ High”. These were not successful shows.

“Sophisticated allusions are good for about six weeks – more fun, but only for myself and about eighteen other people, all of whom are firstnighters anyway. Polished, urbane and adult playwriting in the musical field is strictly a creative luxury.” – Cole Porter,1936

Porter continued to write for Hollywood in the 1930s.

James Stewart sang “You’d Be So Easy to Love” in Born to Dance (1936) with Eleanor Powell. It also featured “I’ve Got You Under My Skin”.

Rosalie (1937) featured “In the Still of The Night”. Porter also wrote “Don’t Fence Me In” in 1934 but it didn’t become a hit until Roy Rogers sang it 10 years later in “Hollywood Canteen”.

At the end of 1939 Porter contributed six songs to the film “Broadway Melody” of 1940 for Fred Astaire, George Murphy and Eleanor Powell.

With the growing political unrest in Europe, the Porters closed their Paris house in 1939 and bought an elegant country house in the Berkshire Mountains, near Williamstown, Massachusetts, which Linda Lee decorated with furniture from their Paris house. After 1939, the Porters spent their days in New York, Williamstown, and sometimes in Hollywood.

In the 1940s, “Panama Hattie” (1940) was Porter’s longest running hit (501 performances) with Ethel Merman, Arthur Treacher and Betty Hutton. “Let’s Face It” (1941) starred Danny Kaye (547 performances) – but neither show produced hit songs.

The following two shows, “Something for the Boys” (1943), again starring Merman, ran for 422 performances, and

Cole Porter and his wife Linda Lee moved to Hollywood in 1935 but she hated the shallow movie scene and also Porter’s now open homosexual encounters. She left for their Paris house and, when his responsibilities on “Rosalie” ended in 1937, he rushed to Paris to patch up the relationship, without success.

He returned to New York without her late in 1937.

However, a riding accident in Locust Valley, New York, when his horse rolled over him, crushing his legs, reunited them. Linda returned to New York to be with him and convinced the doctors not to amputate his right leg.

Porter remained in hospital for seven months before being allowed to return to his Waldorf Towers apartment. He

remained in constant pain for the rest of his life.

After his accident, Porter’s first show, “You Never Know” (1938), starring Clifton Webb, ran for only 18 performances, but “Leave It to Me!” (1938) introduced Mary Martin singing “My Heart Belongs to Daddy” – an enormous hit.

“Mexican Hayride” (1944), with Bobby Clark and June Havoc, ran for 481 performances – but they too were short of expected Porter standards.

Critics were critical and complained about the low standards of the tunes.

After two more flops, “Seven Lively Arts” (1944) and “Around The World” (1946) many thought Cole Porter’s best creative days as a songwriter were over.

He continued to write for Hollywood.

“You’ll Never Get Rich” (1941) with Astaire and Rita Hayworth; “Something to Shout About” (1943) with Don Ameche, Janet Blair, and William Caxton, and “Mississippi Belle” (19431944), which had to be abandoned before filming began.

In 1946, “Night and Day”, a fictional biography of Cole Porter was produced

with Cary Grant totally miscast as Porter in the lead. It was not a good film but succeeded mainly because of its many vintage Porter songs. It was followed in 1948 by “The Pirate with Judy Garland” and Gene Kelly, another failure despite Gene Kelly’s acrobatics.

Many did not expect another hit from Porter, but in Kiss Me Kate (1948) he made a conspicuous comeback. It was by far his most successful show and ran for 1077 performances in New York and 400 in London. It won the Tony Award for Best Musical, and Porter won the award for Best Composer and Best Lyricist. “Wunderbar”, “So In Love”, “We Open in Venice”, “I’ve Come to Wive It Wealthily in Padua”, “Too Darn Hot”, “Always

True to You (in my Fashion)”, and “Brush Up Your Shakespeare” were all resounding hits.

“Out of This World: was his next show in 1950, but was not nearly so successful as “Can Can” in 1952. “C’est Magnifique” and “It’s All Right with Me” were hits from the show which ran for 892 performances.

“Silk Stockings” (1955) was Porter’s last Broadway production. He wrote two more film scores before he left Hollywood for good: “High Society” (1956) starring Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and Grace Kelly contained his very last hit song “True Love”. Porter

also wrote numbers for “Les Girls” (1957) and a final CBS Television special “Aladdin” (1958).

Cole Porter’s mother died in 1952, and his wife Linda Lee died of emphysema in 1954. By 1958, a series of ulcers appeared on his right leg. It had to be amputated and was replaced with an artificial limb. Porter never wrote another song after the amputation and spent the last six years of his life in seclusion – seeing only intimate friends. He continued to live at the Waldorf Towers in New York among his memorabilia and visited his estate in the Berkshire Mountains. He spent the summers in California.

Cole Porter died of kidney failure on October 15, 1964, in Santa Monica, California, at the age of 73. He is interred in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Peru, Indiana between his wife and his father.

Review: ‘Invisible Man’ is a cunning if empty remake invisible man | 124 minutes

U

nravelling the dusted bandages of HG Wells’ classic 1897 science-fiction novel, writer-director Leigh Whannell has refashioned “The Invisible Man” as a bracingly modern #MeToo allegory that, despite its brutal craft, rings hollow.

Our image of Wells’ villain — the white wrappings, the dark sunglasses — comes largely from James Whale’s also-classic 1933 film. This “Invisible Man” might have stayed closer to that vision had a box-office bust not interfered. After “The Mummy,” with Tom Cruise, fizzled, Universal Pictures cancelled its Marvel-esque monster franchise dubbed the Dark Universe. Out went plans for Johnny Depp as the Invisible Man. In came a violent, lowbudget Blumhouse-produced re-imagining from the cocreator of the “Saw” franchise.

The bandages and shades, needless to say, didn’t make the cut.

Instead, this “Invisible Man” has shifted its focus from Wells’ optics scientist to a woman, Cecilia (Elisabeth Moss), running from him and fleeing a toxic relationship.

In the movie’s breathtaking opening (one seemingly modelled after “Sleeping With the Enemy”), she carefully, with disgust on her face, lifts the hand draped over her in bed. With barely hushed panic, she makes her well-planned

nighttime escape from his bleakly modernist seaside house while the sound of waves pummeling the northern California shoreline thunder around her.

The man, Adrian (Oliver Jackson-Cohen), we don’t quiet see. But we immediately get a vivid sense of his abusiveness from Cecilia’s white-knuckle fear. She takes refuge in the home of a childhood friend, a police officer (Aldis Hodge), and his daughter (Storm Reid). There, she trembles with dread at the thought of Adrian coming for her. Her intense paranoia is only momentarily relieved when she gets news that he has killed himself. But when she begins to sense an eerie presence, and notice things like an unexplained imprint on the rug, Cecilia knows that Adrian — “a world-leader in optics” capable of extreme discoveries — is still with her. “He’s not dead,” she says. “I just can’t see him.”

A pervasive terror cloaks the movie. It’s elevated considerably by Moss, an actress thoroughly at home in the most prickly, anxious and unsettling situations.

Her Cecilia is a portrait of a woman desperately clawing for her freedom, but haunted by the spectre, real or imagined, of her terrorising ex.

Trembling and tortured, Moss makes her stalking terrifyingly palpable.

But there’s also a sense, from early on, that “The

ALDIS Hodge as James Lanier Invisible Man” is more interested in utilising a clever and timely conceit for jump scares and muscular, half-visible action sequences than for any genuine exploration of Cecilia’s psychology. We know, from this invisible man’s first foggy breath, that he’s there; there’s no mystery, just a perverse game of hide and seek.

It takes much of the movie for Cecilia to convince anyone else of her unseen tormentor. But as Whannell turns

toward the third act, the once promising set-up disintegrates and “The Invisible Man” gets lost in a familiar torrent of bullets and blood, as well as a few implausible twists that pull the movie further away from Moss’s Cecilia.

While Wells imbued his invisible man with comedy and tragedy, this one remains little more than a lethal plot device, and one so unhinged that any sense of realism vanishes. Adrian turns out

to be a psychopath whose single-minded obsession with Cecilia squanders all the more intriguing capabilities of invisibility. (For that, we’ll always have “Atlanta.” ) Whannell has the talent and cunning to turn “The Invisible Man” into a chilling and well-crafted B-movie. But if you’re looking for anything more than that, you’ll probably come up empty.

The importance of charity Animal matters | KIM ARANHA

T

he importance of charity, fundraising and the support of the general public are stronger now than ever in the Bahamas and around the world.

There are so many environmental tragedies unfolding the globe over. Businessmen and politicians butt heads with environmentalists and scientific scholars. The outcome is not always pretty, and the good guy does not always win.

They are many intelligent, educated people who will pick up the gauntlet and preach with certainty that global warming is a hoax and invented by desperate politicians who want to bring down their opponents. I hear them, but what is their response to the fact that the ice is melting at the poles and that polar bears in the Arctic Circle are having difficulty surviving? In fact, the US Geological Survey projects that reduced sea ice from climate change will lower the population of polar bears by two-thirds by 2050. What do these naysayers have to say about the rising water tables and the intense heat? This is a fact that quite simply cannot be ignored any longer.

The battle to convince people that the ecosystem is fragile and amazingly delicate, and that one single oil rig in the wrong place can cause so much more damage than good is a tough one. Am I the only person to feel that oil is king and provided you are an oil rich country you can do no wrong? I watch the most amazing travesties of justice take place. People kill and plunder, but apparently it’s OK. Am I the only one who fears that this same opinion works its way into the minds of politicians the world over?

There are alternatives to oil

THE ice is melting at the poles and the population of polar bears is expected to be reduced by twothirds in the next 30 years. excavation; viable ways to harness the forces of nature: wind, tides, and the sun are all capable of providing us with the necessary energy to continue to live our gadgetrich lives.

In order to combat this alarming disregard of nature and try to inhibit the “all for me, baby” crowd from doing more damage we must at the very least support the entities that are at the forefront trying to make a difference. But is that socially acceptable?

Fighting the good fight costs money, fighting the good fight requires support, manpower and presence. A march with 20 people does not demand attention or action, but one with several thousand makes even the most complacent amongst us sit up and pay attention.

So many people I know and like, admire even, sit on the fence because there is a hidden, latent desire to please and to be politically correct.

People do not want to upset or, God forbid, rock the boat.

Social acceptance is all-important…or is it?

I grew up in a very socially acceptable world, with a father

and grandmother who commanded great respect through their achievements and birth.

But at the end of the day, does that define me?

What is important to me today is that I’m a champion for the well-being of our planet, our animals and our very fragile ecosystem. There are people who find me to be a crashing bore because I will stand up and fight for the rights of animals here in the Bahamas and elsewhere.

PET OF THE WEEK

I will not lie, I sat in awe and admiration when I watched the recent Academy Awards and I heard the words of the winner for Best Actor, Joaquin Phoenix, when he spoke of the anguish of a mother cow caused by her calf being torn away from his momma so that we can splash milk in our coffee. And thank you Mr Rush Limbaugh for talking nonsense about animals and what they do or do not experience when facing

moments of extreme stress.

May I suggest that you stick to those things that you know about, whatever they may be.

You have made it quite clear that it is most certainly not animal husbandry.

So we come full circle to this important passion and dedication to support organisations who help those who are voiceless. This country and so many others are clueless and the tragic thing is that they really are not interested.

Lately we have seen huge and uncomfortable upheavals in the charity world, accusations of misappropriation of funds, unpleasant allegations.

This helps nobody.

Charities need to be transparent. I can only speak for the Bahamas Humane Society; our books are open. Should anybody wish to see them, a phone call is all it takes; we have no secrets, no surprises.

The thing that matters most is to be true to yourself and those we love and support.

Walk forward with your head held high knowing that you are doing good and nothing but. I guarantee you a peaceful night full of uninterrupted dreams!
