THE Bahamas Gospel Music Awards 2023 season will kick off with a special event featuring some of the best voices in gospel music.
The annual showcase, ‘Celebration of Gospel –Rejoice Denim Night’, will feature new and current artists that have released or will debut brand new music.
The event, which features various genres of gospel music under the theme “One God, One Bahamas”, will take place on Sunday, March 5, at Southland Global Ministries on Solider Road beginning at 7pm.
“Celebration of Gospel is not just a night for you to see your favourite artists but to receive a blessing from the Lord,” said Travis Edgecombe, CEO of BGMA.
“Each artist in the lineup has a message that will speak to the heart of everyone who steps foot into the sanctuary that night. Burdens will be lifted; peace and joy will
LAST Sunday, February 19, was a “red letter” day at St George’s Anglican Church in the Centerville community known as “the Valley.”
A son of St George’s, the Reverend Andrew Toppin, returned to serve as the sixth rector of the church.
Nominated by Diocesan Bishop, the Rt Reverend Laish Boyd, and elected by the parish vestry, the 59- year-old-cleric was welcomed to his new post by parishioners at both the 7am and 9am services with a “get to know you” reception held in the church’s parish hall.
In his inaugural sermon, Fr Toppin reflected on his journey to the rectorship of his home parish.
“Though my mother’s navel string was buried in St Matthew’s Parish and my father’s spiritual home was St Agnes Church, my parents chose to have me baptised at St. George’s Church on August 18, 1963,” he said.
“It was the first rector of this parish, the late Canon Collingwood Cooper, who inspired me to become a priest. He gave me the opportunity to serve around the altar, while the second rector, the late Canon NW Dudley Strachan, helped to nurture my vocation and was then preacher at my ordination to the Diaconate on Tuesday, July, 25 1989.”
Fr Toppin received his primary and secondary education at Queen’s College and Saint John’s College respectively. He has a BA
be restored and the love of Christ will be shared through music. If you want that, be in the room.”
Final calls are being made for nominee submissions.
Those interested in submitting have until March 6 to do so.
“In 2022, we saw a major increase in singles and albums being released. This year we are grateful to host the third annual award show which is promised to be spectacular,” said Travis.
Any single, album or music video released between January 2022 to December
2022 will be eligible for nomination.
Gospel artists seeking to be considered for male or female artist of the year, producer, new artist, and hip hop artist of the year must submit a digital media kit portfolio.
All song submissions must be in made in the MP3 audio format and include the lyrics.
“We have seen a tremendous improvement in the quality of music that has been released this past year and the support from the public has been phenomenal,” said Travis.
A link for submissions can be found on the Bahamas Gospel Music Awards Facebook page.
The BGMA team has added a new category to the mix; that of “Duo, Group or Ensemble of the Year”.
“In celebration of our 50th Independence, we will highlight the past, present and the future of gospel music in the Bahamas and a few reunion performances that will be a major surprise,” said Travis. The nominees will be announced on April 3 live via Facebook while awards ceremony is set for June 11, 2023.
When he set out the host the awards show two years ago, Travis said he was “terrified”, as he did not how things would turn out. Fortunately, the event was a success and has grown since its inception.
“Two years later, all I can say is God is faithful,” he said.
“The fact we are able to bring the entire gospel community together in one night to celebrate each other is amazing. The body of Christ celebrating, praising and worshipping God is a blessing in itself.”
from Saint Augustine’s University in Raleigh, North Carolina, and a BA in Theology from the University of the West Indies. After his ordination, he served as assistant priest ay St Barnabas in New Providence until May 31, 1993. In June 1993, he served as priest-in-charge of All Saints Parish, Mangrove Cay and South Andros. On January 1, 2001, he was appointed rector of Saint Luke’s Parish, South Eleuthera, and served the people of that parish until July 2010. For the following three years, he served as assistant priest at St George’s, New Providence, until his appointment in June 2013 as priest-in-charge of St James Parish, Adelaide.
In concluding his first Sunday service, attended by family, friends and members of his fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, in which he serves as chaplain, Fr
Toppin thanked the members of the vestry for the confidence in approving the bishop’s nomination.
“I am standing on the shoulders of those who have gone ahead and have laid a solid foundation. This legacy continues today and I am building on it. It is an awesome responsibility to the rector of St George and by the grace of God I will not take it lightly. I count it as a joy to serve as your priest, pastor, spiritual guide and friend, may God bless us all as we work together to build of his great church,” he said.
THE 40-day period from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday, known as Lent, encourages Christians to give up personal pleasures as a form of penitence.
The season officially started yesterday and Bahamians posted pictures of the ash crosses drawn on their foreheads on social media for Ash Wednesday.
Tribune Religion spoke to several believers who shared their thoughts and plans for the season of Lent.
“Lent season is a call to renew our relationship with God. Forty days of compassion, prayers, and love. Just ask for the guidance of God in your life and all will be well. For those of us who practice and observe the season, hopefully this helps in creating a deeper connection with God,” said Anglican Monica Adderley.
Jessica Forbes, a member of the Catholic Church, said: “I stopped by my church today on my lunch break and had such a
bubbly feeling to see all of the cars parked in the lot and on the street. People took time out of their busy work schedules to stop in at church and recognise today is Ash Wednesday. For me though, I always struggle with trying to give up something for the period of days. This is something I have to give some deep thought to, but I do want to work on some areas of my life and will try my best to start during the season.”
Some people agreed that Lent is not only a time to give up something, it can also be a time to add to your life.
“Let’s say you are in the area of your life where you are saving more; you can use Lent as a time to maybe give more; whether it's to a programme in your community or to a total stranger,” said David Johnson.
In 2022, actor Mark Wahlberg, who is always vocal about his faith, said every year, people always ask him what he is going to give up. But during that year he decided that instead of doing less, it was time to do more.
“Let's try to do more: more love, more peace, more
acceptance. More caring and more kindness,” he said.
However, some Christians believe that this is a cop-out to some extent.
“You’re supposed to sacrifice during Lent. I feel adding something, while positive, is a bit of an easy way out. Christians are supposed to make a real effort to give something up; it’s not supposed to always be pleasant, “ said Catholic Daniela Bain.
“Traditionally, you’re supposed to fast; give up meat and alcohol. And that’s what I’m doing. It’s good for my health as well.”
Lent is observed in the Anglican, Eastern Orthodox, Lutheran, Methodist, Moravian, Oriental Orthodox, Persian, United Protestant and Roman Catholic traditions; also in some Baptist, Reformed, Presbyterian, and nondenominational Christian churches.
It commemorates the 40 days Jesus Christ spent fasting in the desert and enduring temptation by Satan, according to the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, before beginning his public ministry.
