Legacy Church takes faith to the streets in latest ‘Drive-up Prayer’ outreach event By ALESHA CADET Tribune Features Writer acadet@tribunemedia.net

T

he desire to go beyond the four walls of the church has been burning in Apostle Rosmery Pena’s heart for some time now. She is the senior pastor of Legacy Church and continuously strives to reach communities in New Providence through the power of prayer. One the Legacy Church’s most recent outreach efforts to the people included the “Drive-up Prayer” initiative that took place in the Southwest Plaza, Carmichael Road. Dwaneisha McGregor, lead intercessor at the Legacy Church, said being present in the Southwest Plaza allowed church members to reach a lot of people who were all very open and welcoming of their prayer team. “Persons could either drive up to our prayer stations in the parking lot and remain in their cars as some of our team members prayed for them, or they could be prayed for in the corridors of the plaza. The location definitely allowed us to reach many people,” she said. “We want to pray with people from all walks of life

SCENES from the recent 'Drive-up Prayer' outreach event at the Southwest Plaza. because we truly believe that in one moment of prayer, someone’s life can be transformed. The message we hope they receive as our ministers pray with them is that there is a God who sees them, knows them, and cares about their every need and concern and He answers.” Ms McGregor believes God gave Apostle Pena a mandate to build Him a healing community; a church that heals and deals with the trauma of the nation. The mission for this ministry, she said, is reaching people, transforming lives, and building a legacy. And to achieve these goals,

members are intentional about developing programmes that will help people process their trauma. “We are very dedicated to discipleship and training so that we are people who know God and make Him known on earth. Our first ‘Drive-up Prayer’ was held by Legacy Church, which is located on John F Kennedy Highway, where we held signs on the side of the street, and as cars passed, they would pull on the side and we prayed with them as they sat in their vehicles,” said Ms McGregor. “This second time, we hosted the ‘Drive-up Prayer’ at Southwest Plaza and encountered many people

as they were visiting stores. We saw God minister to the hearts of mothers, fathers, grandparents, young men and young women, and it feels great to know that people are encountering God.” Ms McGregor believes initiatives like the ‘Driveup Prayer’ are important in a country like the Bahamas that is faced with increasing violence, crime, and a sense of hopelessness and despondency. “There are also people who may have a sense of hopelessness due to personal life circumstances such as health issues, family concerns, financial burdens, and more. It’s important for people to know that no matter what, even in the midst of difficulty, there is hope found in God. It was significant to see and hear about all of the needs that were present; people are hurting and broken and they need hope and they need people to partner with them,” said Ms McGregor. She said the very first car that pulled up to receive a prayer had two young men in their early 20 inside. She said they were completely open and receptive to the prayer partners and intercessors. “When we began to pray for them, they were very moved and shed tears. We had some of the male

pastors and deacons come and minister to them. It was so powerful to see them open and honest with their need but also receptive,” she said. Another person who drove up for prayer, Ms Mcgregor said, was a woman who had been involved in outreach for 26 years, distributing food in the community to those in need by herself. She asked the Legacy team to pray for the food she was about to hand out that particular day. “We learned her story of generosity over the years; how she was paying out of pocket to purchase supplies to cook meals, and after her car broke down, she was renting a car monthly to drive around and give these meals away. We invited her to our church on Sunday morning to honour this work that she has been doing for the Lord. Our community was able to give food so that she could continue to cook. We sowed into her life and were sowing to assist with her car rental, but someone in the community was moved to bless her with a car. It’s amazing what God will do to remind someone that He is with them,” said Ms McGregor. She is happy to report that the response to this latest ‘Drive-Up Prayer’ from the public was great, with many individuals expressing

gratitude for the church’s presence within the community. Ms McGregor said they all saw people leave filled with renewed hope, peace, and even receiving physical healing in their bodies. “We will continue to do ‘Drive-Up Prayers’ in the future and will be in partnership with certain food stores that are going to partner with us to give grocery bags away; we are also going to give gas vouchers away. There will be prayer and intercession, but we’re also going to use that time to meet the needs of the community in different ways. We will also continue our prayer walks throughout communities, which we started with Bain and Grants Town,” she said. “We will have ‘Legacy in the Park’ again this year, where we hold our Sunday morning service. This will happen sometime in the Summer.” Also this Summer, she said, the Legacy Church will be flying in a team from Canada that is going to partner in training for what they call “Encounter Weekends”. “This has to do with dealing with trauma and triumphing and being victorious over the areas of trauma in our lives. These are some of the highlights for this year,” she said.

GOSPEL ARTIST EMBARKS ON SCHOOL TOUR TO ‘STOP THE VIOLENCE’ By JEFFARAH GIBSON Tribune Features Writer jgibson@tribunemedia.net

A

local gospel music artist is doing his part to fight the rise in violent crime in the Bahamas by striving to be a positive role model and discouraging young people from engaging in acts in violence. Apostle Leroy Butler of Kingdom World Ministries International, formerly of the Baha Men, is hoping his “The Blood of Jesus: Stop the Violence” school tour will reach as many young people as possible and touch their lives. He has invited a number of gospel artists to join him in embarking on this tour, which will be kicking off this month. During the school tour, the artists will perform positive music and share their unique testimonies with students. Apostle Butler feels the wave of violence happening in schools stems from a number of different issues. However, lack of a spiritual journey and Christian principles, he believes, are at the heart of the negative activities many young people find themselves involved with. “When the Holy Spirit dropped the idea of the

school tour in my spirit He gave it to me in phases. The first phase was for us to hit the schools. He said to me school has just started there is so much violence and there is just too many things going on with young people,” he told Tribune Religion. “Then the Lord gave me the name ‘The Blood of Jesus: Stop the Violence’. In the spirit what He is saying is that there is too much blood shed. But when you hear ‘The Blood of Jesus: Stop The Violence’ campaign it is all about the blood of Jesus and the blood that He shed. It is his blood he shed for life. His

blood was shed to bring life not for us to take life away. It was shed for our sins.” The main objective of the upcoming school tour, Apostle Butler said, is for each of the participating gospel music artists to reach someone with their story. “We have been doing things already as gospel ministers. Why it is so important and powerful for us to come together in this way is because we all have a story. We all have testament,” he said. “Even before ‘The Stop The Violence’ tour we had other programmes going on where we went out into the streets with Apostle

TEMPLE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL

ENTRANCE EXAMINATION 2024-2025 On Saturday, February 17, 2024, Temple Christian School will hold its Entrance Examination for students entering grades 7,8,9 and 10. TIME: 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. LOCATION: High School Campus, Shirley Street Application forms are available at the High School Office and should be completed and returned to the school by Friday, February 16, 2024. Henry Higgins and their programme. We hit the road, we pray, sing and we do outreach. To me, I feel it is effective because music for the young people is very powerful. If you listen to (a

certain) type of music…it is really not good.” Helping bring change to the life of young people, Apostle Butler said, requires an all-hands-ondeck approach. “People may say how will this campaign stop violence. Violence comes from different problems. If we all play our part we can stop someone from going down that path; we all can stop someone from going down that wrong path. We won’t be able to stop everyone, but everyone of us has a part to play,” he said. “We have seen the power of music and the power of us speaking and our testimony has. Even if the campaign reaches one, we would have done our jobs.” Apostle Butler said simply showing young people that there is a better or alternative life to

violence can sometimes go a long way. “If a gang man approaches them and says, ‘Hey, this is a way out’, and no one else is doing this or showing them a different avenue then what do you really want them to do? That is the only way and only door that people are showing them. If someone says to them, ‘Hey, this is a better way…you can make your own money; you can be your own boss you could be a songwriter’, then they will re-think it all,” he said. Apostle Butler, who is a former band member of Baha Men, usually tells his story to those he encounters during outreach activities. ‘I always tell my story. I came from Kemp Road but I was able to travel all around the world with a Grammy-award winning band,” he said.
