“In the Eye of Hurricane Dorian”

Commemorating a 'historic' natural disaster

rand Bahamian artist Leo Brown has completed a pair of Hurricane Dorian-inspired paintings – one captures the enormity of the monster storm as it stalled over the island, the other depicts the Bahamian people’s prayers to God in the midst of the destruction.

The original pieces – “Dorian” and “In the Eye of Hurricane Dorian” – are prominently displayed on an easel in Brown’s art studio at the Port Lucaya Marketplace.

He plans to create a series of Hurricane Dorian paintings in commemoration of the historic event.

The first piece entitled “Dorian” is of the category five storm over Grand Bahama.

“I wanted to capture that time when the storm was hovering over Grand Bahama for such a long time and people just couldn’t wait for it to leave,” Brown explained.

The second piece shows two men climbing ladders towards

heaven holding the Bahamian flag.

“It is symbolic of all the prayers that were going up to God for Grand Bahama and Abaco at the time of the hurricane,” he said.

Going more into detail regarding his motivation to create these two paintings, he said: “Hurricane Dorian was a storm like nothing we had experienced before. So many communities under water, so many lives lost, so many homes broken. The first painting titled ‘Dorian’ shows the

While painting I was thinking about the sound of the wind and rain. I remember listening to the radio and hearing people calling to be rescued, and seeing the destruction after the hurricane it was so overwhelming. I also wanted to preserve history, especially for younger generations who would have heard about the storm but we lived through it.”

East Grand Bahama experienced the brunt of the storm, which brought a 20ft storm surge that resulted in severe flooding. Nine people died and 22 others are still missing and feared dead.

Brown said that after the hurricane had passed many of his customers overseas contacted him.

“After the storm I got so many e-mails from customers who became friends. They wanted to know if my family and I were OK and if my art work was also OK, and said that they were praying for Bahamians in Grand Bahama and Abaco,” he said.

“I think it was a historic event; this storm and the path of destruction was of biblical proportions. And I wanted to capture that on canvas for future generations to look back and remember.”

He added: “I started to do a series of paintings on Hurricane Dorian but had to put that on hold because I started getting lots of commissions for other things, but eventually I want to do more.”

Although Grand Bahama and Abaco have been devastated, he said Bahamians are a very resilient people.

“Life is like a pendulum, we may be on the downswing now but eventually we will get back up again. Life has its share of challenges but God will never give us more than we can bear.

Like Job, I do believe that our end will be better than our beginning,” he said.

Brown opened his art studio 30 years ago. He was one of many Bahamian recipients of a scholarship from the late Edward St George, former chairman of the Grand Bahama Port Authority, to attend art college abroad.

By day she makes sure people’s teeth are gleaming and healthy, but after hours she tempts them with the sweetest, most elaborate creations she can dream up. The dental hygienist-cum-baker tells Cara Hunt how she acquired such an unusual combination of passions.

ia Smith is all about helping people with their sweet tooth.

As a dental hygienist she is dedicated to helping her clients maintain their oral hygiene, and as a baker she whips up tasty and stunning desserts to satisfy their sweet cravings for milestone moments in their lives.

“They can eat all my desserts and then come to the office and let me clean their teeth,” she joked.

And while the two professions may seem an unlikely combination, they really do reflect her two passions.

Gia became a dental hygienist in 2006 after years of visiting the dental office

herself as a teen who had to wear braces.

“I wore braces as a teenager and I would have to always go into Dr Russell’s office to have them adjusted and I just fell in love with the idea of becoming a dentist myself,” she said.

Less appealing, however, was the idea of the many years that it would take to be in school to earn degree in dentistry.

“When I found out that it would take 10 years to become a dentist I was like ‘oh, no’. So I looked into dental hygiene,, and really, it’s the perfect option for me, because I am still in the field and in the dentist office and I love all my patients and taking care of them.”

“It’s a challenge when you are working with those stubborn patients and you get their teeth looking nice and then you see them a few weeks or months later and you see that they have not been taking care of their teeth...Do you know all the effort that I put in for you to not brush or floss?’”

GIA has been passionate about the dental profession since she was a young girl wearing braces.

The most challenging part of her career, she said, is getting her patients to follow instructions as it relates to keeping up good dental hygiene practices.

“It’s a challenge when you are working with those stubborn patients and you get their teeth looking nice and then you see them a few weeks or months later and you see that they have not been taking care of their teeth, they have not been brushing twice a day or listening to all my instructions and it’s like, ‘Do you know all the effort that I put in for you to not brush or floss?’”

Gia’s oldest patient is 100 years old and still has all of their teeth.

“That is the level of oral care I want to help my patients aspire to,” she said.

And her day job allows her the flexibility to also devote time to passion number two – creating fabulous cakes.

ELABORATE cakes for children’s birthdays are big business.

“The name of my company is G-Licious (the G, of course, is for Gia.) I had always been comfortable in the kitchen from the time that I was a little girl playing with my Easy-Bake Oven.

“And then as I got older I would make the birthday cakes for my family members and my mother and father. So my husband eventually told me, ‘You are really good at this and you should

consider making them to sell’, and I was like, ‘Do you really think so?’”

So Gia started making cakes professionally, but soon realised that she wanted them to look as good as they tasted. For that, she needed to improve her decorating skills.

“I took a decoration class at Something’s Different so that I could get a few more technical lessons and

I’ve been doing this ever since about 2009/10,” she said.

Gia really enjoys the creativity involved in making cakes, but it’s not always easy.

“It’s a challenge and cake making can be very tedious. Sometimes a cake can take up to two or three days to make and you want to use to the freshest ingredients and make it perfect. I have to say sometimes when you make a really beautiful cake you have that moment when you are like, ‘Wow that’s about to get cut and eaten,’ but then you get the reviews about how much it was enjoyed and that is so worth it.”

Gia said since she started making desserts professionally, she has seen a noticeable increase in really elaborate orders from her customers.

“People are definitely going all out for their celebrations, especially first birthdays. We get orders for such elaborate cakes with multi tiers and my husband says to me, ‘Wow, that is just for a first birthday.’ But people go all out and want to celebrate all their events in a big way. And I really believe that everything is a milestone to be celebrated.”

SUPER BOWL SHOWDOWN Mahomes, Garoppolo rebound from injuries to lead teams to football’s biggest stage

Sunday, watching the big game instead of playing in it.

Throw in the retired Peyton Manning and at least one of those quarterbacks has played in 15 of the last 16 Super Bowls. The lone exception was Super Bowl 47 when Joe Flacco capped Baltimore’s amazing playoff run with a 34-31 win over the 49ers and Colin Kaepernick.

This year’s Super Bowl is the first one pitting two twentysomething quarterbacks since that matchup on Feb. 3, 2013. Garoppolo is 28 and Mahomes is 24 — he’s trying to join Brady and Roethlisberger as the only quarterbacks ever to win a Super Bowl before his 25th birthday.

Although Garoppolo will make his Super Bowl debut in Miami, he already owns two Super Bowl rings after serving as Brady’s backup in New England’s last-second win over Seattle in Super Bowl 49 and again two years later in the Patriots’ overtime win against Atlanta, when 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was the Falcons’ offensive coordinator.

Garoppolo and Mahomes have squared off only once before, on Sept.

23, 2018, in Kansas City, when the 49ers lost both the game and Garoppolo, who sustained a season-ending torn ACL as he was trying to rally San Francisco from a four-touchdown deficit. His left knee buckled during a scramble down the sideline late in the fourth quarter.

With their franchise quarterback sidelined last season, the 49ers tumbled to a 4-12 record. Now they have a chance to join the 1999 St. Louis Rams as the only team to win a Super Bowl a year after winning just four games.

The headliners of Super Bowl 54 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami are Patrick Mahomes and Jimmy Garoppolo, two members of a new generation of mercurial, mobile quarterbacks who have vanquished the old guard and overcome long odds and serious injuries to reach the pinnacle of their profession.

Mahomes rebounded from a dislocated kneecap he suffered in Denver in October to lead the Chiefs (14-4) to their first Super Bowl appearance in half a century, atonement for their overtime loss in last year’s AFC championship when they frittered away a fourth-quarter lead against the New England Patriots.

Coming off four straight losing seasons and a 4-12 campaign that landed them the No. 2 pick in the 2019 NFL draft, the San Francisco 49ers (15-3) earned their first Super Bowl appearance in seven years behind Garoppolo, whose return from a season-ending knee injury early in 2018 sparked the turnaround.

The 49ers earned the NFC’s top seed for the first time since 1997 and made it to Miami with 17-point routs of the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers.

“Starting back with the ACL and everything, since then it’s been crazy,” Garoppolo said. “It’s been a crazy whirlwind of a ride.”

The Chiefs made it harder on themselves, spotting the Houston Texans 24 points and the Tennessee Titans 10 points before rallying for double-digit wins behind their speedy offense and much-improved defense.

The only team in NFL history to score more points on its way to the Super Bowl than Kansas City’s 86 was the 1990 Buffalo Bills, who scored 95 points before losing Super Bowl 25 to the New York Giants on a last-second missed field goal.

Mahomes is 27-8 as Kansas City’s starter for a .771 winning percentage and Garoppolo is 23-5 in his career for an .821 winning percentage, including 21-5 with the Niners.

Garoppolo has actually come to view his torn ACL in 2018 as a blessing because it allowed the franchise to select defensive end Nick Bosa with the second overall draft pick last April.

Bosa anchored a much-improved San Francisco defense that, combined with the 49ers’ great ground game, its precision passer and its creative play-caller, makes San Francisco the league’s most well-rounded team.

The 49ers are counting on those strengths to serve as the antidote to the Chiefs’ maestro quarterback who nearly made it to last year’s Super Bowl but never touched the ball in overtime as the Patriots won the coin flip and Brady led them to a touchdown on the opening drive.

“We fell short last year and we learned from it,” said Mahomes, who will be the fifth-youngest quarterback to start a Super Bowl.

Mahomes won the NFL MVP award last year in his first season as the starter when he threw for more than 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns. Those, numbers dwindled to barely 4,000 and 26 TDs this season when he missed two games. In the playoffs, he’s thrown for 615 yards and eight touchdowns a year after throwing for 573 yards and three TDs. “A lot of people would say he had an even better season, despite being hurt for part of it,” said Chiefs chairman and CEO Clark Hunt. “I think a big part of him being better this year was his leadership qualities. For a 23-yearold kid last year, he was amazing as a leader, but you really saw him mature this year as a leader. You could see the entire team looking to him when times were darkest.”

Like when they trailed Houston 24-0 in the divisional round or Tennessee 10-0 and 17-7 in the AFC championship, which they came back to win 35-24.

Afterward, the Chiefs hoisted the Lamar Hunt Trophy named for the franchise’s founder that goes to the AFC winner.

“We are very excited to win the trophy that has my dad’s name on it and have an opportunity to head to Miami,” Hunt said.

San Francisco coach Shanahan was handed the George Halas Trophy that goes to the NFC champion by his father, Mike Shanahan, who led the Denver Broncos to back-to-back Super Bowl wins in the 1990s and was named an honorary captain by 49ers CEO Jed York.

“It was pretty special,” the younger Shanahan said. “To get a trophy handed by anyone is really cool, but especially Jed making my dad an honorary captain. ... I didn’t know what was going on, but it was pretty cool.”

Both teams are hoping their conference championship celebration was but a prelude to raising the Lombardi Trophy in Miami.

How to host the perfect Super Bowl party

uper Bowl Sunday is the ultimate party day. For football fans its the culmination of a whole season of nail-biting games. For nonfootball fans or the casual viewer there is the party food, the beers, the entertainment – Demi Lovato is singing the national anthem and Jennifer Lopez and Shakira are doing the half-time show – and of course the ads to look forward to.

Thirty seconds of airtime on Fox during the game cost $5.6 million, a $400,000 increase from last year. And to be sure, there will be many funny, starstudded ads. So try to time your bathroom breaks so that you don’t miss the commercials everyone will be talking about at the water cooler on Monday.

The four-in-one commercials which Heinz is offering up (at a $20-million price tag no less) are all directed

by Roman Coppola. Meanwhile, Walmart fans can look forward to seeing the super store’s first ever Super Bowl commercial which will feature a slew of sci-fi characters from “Bill and Ted Excellent’s Adventure”, “Men in Black”, “Arrival”, “The Lego Movie”.

Another first time advertiser is Facebook; the social media giant hired comedian Chris Rock to promote their groups

feature. Budweiser, always known for their entertaining Super Bowl commercials, said they will buck American stereotypes with their ad. Other companies to look out for are Amazon, Cheetos, and a pretty morbid ad for Planters peanuts.

To ensure optimum viewing pleasure for your guests, make sure there are plenty of prime seats so everyone can catch those all-important touchdowns.

Viewing aside, food and drinks are a major component for a successful Super Bowl party. You want to have plenty of grab-and-go options so the nervous fans can eat with minimum fuss and celebrate or drown their sorrows with the beverages of their choice.

Game day staples like wings and chips and dip are a must, but spice up your buffet by being creative.

Start with basic wings and and add an assortment of sauces for people to try.

Consider a nacho and taco bar, or perhaps individual sized pizzas. Your guests might also enjoy bite-sized gourmet burgers with fun toppings like pineapples or blue cheese. No one ever said game day food had to be predictable.

Next, up the ante when it comes to Super Bowl bets. In addition to the obvious who will win/who will lose and the

point spread, have fun bets like who will score first, the score at halftime, or who will call the first timeout.

And finally, ensure you have great decorations.

Consider making your buffet table resemble a football field (check Pinterest for some great ideas). Colour choice is easy – both the Chiefs and the 49ers wear red as their primary colour, so it’s a sure bet to paint the party red.

Don’t fret if you aren’t a huge fan, it’s been reported that since the Chiefs as AFC champions are the designated home team, they will wear their traditional red jerseys.

The San Francisco 49ers announced they will be going with their white uniforms; these jerseys include a white top and gold pants, so you will be able to tell who is who on the field.

Those interested in a full meal can enjoy a special game day all-you-can-eat buffet and viewing party for $65 at Virgil’s. People can pre-purchase tickets by Saturday by calling the hotel’s ‘Big Game’ desk.

Miami (AP) – Jennifer Lopez and Shakira said their Super Bowl halftime show will pay homage to Latino culture, promising a joint performance that has an empowering message and also one that will remember NBA icon Kobe Bryant.

Lopez and Shakira told the media they worked hard to put together an eye-popping, highenergy 12-minute performance before the San Francisco 49ers take on the Kansas City Chiefs at Hard Rock Stadium.

Shakira and Lopez have separately released a number of chart-topping hits that dominated both the pop and Latin charts in the last two decades. While rehearsing days ago, Lopez said her beau Alex Rodriguez came

“It’s definitely a ride,” Lopez added.

Or, if none of those options appeal, you can always party out at sea.

Blackbeard’s Revenge, departing from Pioneer’s Dock, is setting up XL sized projector screens.

ace beat for the gods” is an expression that means having the perfect makeup applied for that flawless look. It is also where a new professional makeup studio gets its name from.

The Beat Studios, located in the Mackey Street Plaza, celebrated its grand opening last Friday. Focused on offering cosmetics that cater to women of colour, makeup artist Lisa Wallace said she opened this new space for those who want a classy and sophisticated look.

This is Lisa’s second brick and mortar venture. She previously operated out of a location on Marathon Road.

This was in 2016. In between moving on from that venue and opening Beat Studios, Lisa also launched her very own makeup line called ICON Cosmetics, which will be available at the new store.

“What makes my studio unique is the fact that I plan to cover a lot of ground in the beauty industry, making it a one-stop-shop for makeup lovers to be able to purchase goods, receive services, as well as makeup tips and classes,” she told Tribune Weekend.

She envisions Beat Studios to be very diverse and, most importantly, cost efficient, when it comes to its products.

“It is a Bahamian brand for the everyday woman, with lots to choose from. I have a variety of products – from lipsticks to lip glosses, eyeshadow palettes, face powders and more. I’m so proud that ICON Cosmetics is growing so fast. I get to see how much amazing feedback we get on a daily basis with so many women rocking the

brand and loving it,” she said.

“The mood when you walk in definitely makes you feel that you’re in the right

place. The colours I chose (for the décor) were white, black and gold. Inside you will find inspirational quotes to encourage and inspire.”

Scouting a location for the new space presented somewhat of a challenge, she said, but she eventually found what she was looking for.

“I wanted a new look with adequate parking for my clients, as well as an area suitable for the business,” she said.

When it comes keeping up with the ever-expanding beauty industry, which last year was estimated to be worth $532 billion, Lisa admits it’s not an easy feat.

However, she is confident that by staying focused and keeping up with the market on a daily basis she will be able to fulfill all her clientele’s makeup needs. She said it also a great feeling to be able to encourage and inspire others to find their way in this field.

More culinary adventures with Happy Foods 242

aking it to season 10 was a big milestone achievement for Sasha Lightbourne, the CEO, host and executive producer of the “Happy Foods 242”. But now that the TV show is about to start its 12th season there is even more to reason to celebrate.

Even after all these years, she said, viewers continue to tune in – a sure sign that her and her team are doing something right.

Each season, Happy Foods 242 explores the culinary landscape of the Bahamas, giving viewers a behind-the-scene glimpse of new and popular restaurants and showcasing the best they have to offer, be it be food, drinks or other goodies.

This Saturday, the first episode of season 12 will air at 7pm on channel 212’s “Our TV”. Sasha promises this opening episode will be “awesome” and she hopes viewers will be as impressed by the featured restaurant as she is and will choose to visit it afterwards.

“This season starts off with a bang and continues until the very last episode. We signed a major deal with a major employer in the country. That employer purchased an entire half season so this season will only get better. The show still has the same foundation though – lots of fun, lots of food and drinks and new and old places for Bahamians and tourists to visit and explore.

You have to tune in every Saturday to see. I will say though, we returned to three of our favourite clients who have all shown growth over

Asked about any new food trends she has observed during in her culinary adventures, Sasha said she has noticed several local restaurants realising the importance of being consistent with their service and quality of food. Many have come to the realisation that

reinventing the wheel doesn’t always work in this industry, so restaurateurs are focusing on staying true to their roots.

While they may switch up a few menu items here or there, they tend to be sticking with what they know works.

“One of the things I love about being Bahamian is that we are not afraid to voice our opinions. So some fans

She said Happy Foods 242 offers different things for different viewers.

“Some people use it as an outlet to detox from hardcore life issues. Others use it to be informed on where to go.

Others love the rawness that I present as a host. It touches the lives of so many, more than I, as the host, often fail to realise,” she said.

As for there being an eventual end in sight for Happy Foods 242, Sasha had this to say: “People love the show, so as long as clients keep coming and as long as people keep watching, we will keep doing it. It is bigger than us...inspiration for many young people, not just in the profession, but outside of it as well.”

Brunch over the bridge

ou’d be hard-pressed to find a more beautiful spot for a relaxing brunch than the waterfront setting of Dune at The Ocean Club on Paradise Island.

The restaurant, already known for its lunch and dinner options, last week debuted its newest dining option – Sunday brunch – and is hoping locals in particular will adopt it as a new weekend tradition.

“We wanted to create an experience that rejuvenates Dune’s appeal in the eyes and stomachs of Nassuvians.

There needs to be a strong occasion to bring guests over the bridge. Sundays

remind us to reconnect with friends and family, and what better way do we do this than over home-cooked food?

And so, naturally, a brunch with all our own family favourites made the most sense,” Chef de Cuisine Shaniqua Darling told Tribune Weekend.

“We’ve combined the most flavourful Bahamian dishes with the best restaurant views in Nassau to create what Sunday brunch should be: an occasion.”

An abundance of choice is offered, from conch chowder to basil tomato soup; made-to-order omelettes with plantains and ham; an extensive salad bar that also features the Dune

favourites of hummus or guacamole; shrimp and crab legs, alongside charcuterie and imported cheese stations.

And then Dune’s team of local chefs

also serve up jerk chicken and pineapple kebobs, cracked lobster, and of course peas and rice, toasted plantains, and grilled corn on the cob.

The sweet ending to the day comes courtesy of Executive Pastry Chef Tessa Lightbourne, who is in charge of the day’s guava bread pudding, island coconut tarts, rum cake, mango panna cotta, and orange crème brûlée with white chocolate ganache.

Tribune Weekend was invited to sample the brunch first-hand last Sunday. The intimate resort setting truly feels like a quick weekend vacation rather than just a venue for the meal, and the buffet selection is just large enough to ensure that everyone can find something to their liking, but not so vast where you feel overwhelmed by the choice.

Among our personal favourites where the grilled steak, the boiled grouper (which truly tasted like it was made “down-home” style) with a mango and avocado salad and the mango panna cotta as dessert.

Sunday brunch at Dune is served from 12noon to 3pm. The price is $95 per person, $65 for children under 12, and endless mimosas or Bloody Marys are $25 per person.

Cara says: “Well, he certainly bought ‘Old Town Road’ to life...and how!That is a very bright pink and I love it! It’s different and so ridiculous in a very fun way. He sure knows how to work a red carpet. Such a fun celebrity to have.”

Review: Class warfare depicted brilliantly in ‘Parasite’

B

PARASITE | 136 minutes

ong Joon-ho’s film “Parasite” starts in a dingy, half-basement apartment with a family of four barely able to scratch out a life. There must be no place to go but up, right? Yes and no. There’s nothing predictable when the South Korean director is on his game.

This dark, socially conscious film about the intertwining of two families is an intricately plotted, adult thriller.

We can go up, for sure, but Bong can also take us deeper down. There’s always an extra floor somewhere in this masterpiece.

It tells the story of the impoverished four-person Kim family who, one by one, and with careful and devious planning, all get employed by the four-person affluent Park family — as a tutor, an art teacher, a driver and a housekeeper. They are imposters stunned by the way wealth can make things easier: “Money is an iron. It smooths out all the creases,” says the Park patriarch with wonder.

Bong, who directed and wrote the story for “Parasite,” has picked his title carefully, of course. Naturally, he’s alluding to the sycophantic relationship by a clan of scammers to the clueless rich who have unwittingly opened the doors

of their home on a hill. But it’s not that simple. The rich family seem incapable of doing anything — from dishes to sex — without help. Who’s scamming who?

Bong’s previous films play with film genres and never hide their social commentary — think of the environmentalist pig-caper “Okja” and the dystopian sci-fi global warming scream “Snowpiercer.” But this time, Bong’s canvas is a thousand times smaller and his focus light-years more intense.

There are no CGI train chases

on mountains or car chases through cities. (There is also, thankfully, 100% less Tilda Swinton, a frequent, over-thetop Bong collaborator.)

Soon the son (a dreamy Choi Woo-sik) convinces them to hire his sister (the excellent Park So-dam) as an art

teacher, but doesn’t reveal it’s his sis. She forges her diploma and spews arty nonsense she learned on the internet, impressing the polite but firm Park matriarch (a superb Jo Yeo-jeong.)

The Park’s regular chauffeur is soon let go and replaced by the Kim patriarch (a steely Lee Sun-kyun). Ditto the housemaid, who is dumped in favour of the Kims’ mother (a feisty Jang Hye-jin.) All eight people seem happy with the new arrangement until Bong reveals a twist: There are more parasites than you imagined.

The clean, impeccably furnished Park home will have some blood splashing about.

Bong’s trademark slapstick is still here but the rough edges of his often too-loud lessons are shaved down nicely and his actors step forward.

“Keep it focused,” the Kim’s son counsels his father at one point. Bong has followed that advice.

There are typically dazzling Bong touches throughout.

Just look for all the insect

references — stink bugs at the beginning to flies at the end, and a preoccupation with odour across the frames.

And there’s a scene in which the rich matriarch skillfully winds noodles in a bowl while, in another room, duct tape is being wrapped around a victim and classical music plays.

There are no villains in “Parasite” — and also no heroes. Both families are forever broken after chafing against each other, a bleak message about the classes ever really co-existing (Take that, “Downton Abbey”).

“Parasite” is a worthy winner of the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, the first South Korean movie to win the prestigious top prize.

The director has called it an “unstoppably fierce tragicomedy.” We just call it brilliant.

Showing students a path to the future

s graduation nears, many high schoolers find themselves at a loss as to what to next with their lives. Enter the organisers of the Purpose Path, who say their upcoming event will bring clarity and motivation to students who might need it.

The event aims to provide teens and other young Bahamians with a clearer path to self-discovery and purpose, both academically and professionally.

SA Johnson Global Consultancy Services in conjunction with Brown Inc Productions and Entertainment Studios will host its inaugural two-day

seminar “Purpose Path – The Path Made Clear” at the University of the Bahamas on February 28-29, from 10am to 5pm on both days.

The purpose of the event is to expose 12th grade and college students to pertinent information and useful resources which can help to guide their decisions as

regards to academics and business post-secondary school.

“We saw there was a need, a need to bridge both the theory of the educational system with the practical application of life skills. We wanted to introduce our youth to the people who have done it and succeeded,” said Sherell Brown of Brown Inc.

“Our programme was designed to help the students in the transition during this critical time in their lives so they can make the bestinformed decisions for the path that lies ahead. Gone are the days of ‘If I knew then what I know now, I would have done it differently’. We took some of the movers and shakers from the length and breadth of this nation and placed them on this platform to not just motivate the students, but to give them the tools and resources needed to make a better decision as regards to their professional and academic journeys.”

The event, she said, promises to be youthful, engaging, insightful, inspirational and impactful. It will feature a cadre of professionals from the academic and business communities who will present in their own unique ways on a myriad of topics.

Students will also have the opportunity to interact with professionals from scholarship agencies, universities, job agencies, and commercial banks who will provide printed information on scholarship opportunities, college majors, job openings, entrepreneurship 101, opening bank accounts and creating a savings plan.

“This was our way of giving back, paying it forward and lending a helping hand. A wise man once said when you have ascend to the top of the mountain, reach back and help someone else climb, and simply put, this event serves to do just that,” said Ms Brown.

“We want these students to know that they can have the life that they dreamed of if they have a sense of purpose, work hard, stay the course, apply certain principles, access correct information, seek mentorship, then their dreams, too, can become realities.”

literary lives – Thomas Jefferson

A Founding Father striving for Enlightenment Sir Christopher Ondaatje writes about the American statesman, diplomat, lawyer, architect, and Founding Father who served as the third President of the United States from 1801 to 1809. Previously he had served as the second Vice President of the United States from 1797 to 1801.

Although regarded as a leading spokesman for democracy, he had a controversial private life.

homas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743 at the family estate in Shadwell in the Colony of Virginia, the third of ten children.

He was of English, and possibly Welsh, descent and was born a British subject. His father, Peter Jefferson, was a planter and surveyor who died when Jefferson was 14. His mother moved the family to Tuckahoe Plantation in 1745 on the death of William

Randolph, the plantation’s owner and Jefferson’s friend, who in his Will named him guardian of his children.

The Jeffersons returned to Shadwell in 1752, where Peter died in 1757; his estate was divided between his sons, Thomas and Randolph. Thomas inherited approximately 5,000 acres of land just outside Charlottesville in Virginia, including Monticello, an 800foot high peak, and over 400 slaves.

Apart from work, the sale of slaves was an important part of revenue and

economic survival for the tobacco and mixed crop plantation. He assumed full authority over his property when he was 21.

“Our greatest happiness does not depend on the condition of life in which chance has placed us, but is always the result of a good conscience, good health, occupation, and freedom of all pursuits.”

Thomas Jefferson was educated at Tuckahoe, first with tutors, and then at an English school when he was five. In 1752, when he was nine, he went to a local school run by a Scottish Presbyterian minister. Six years later he was taught by Reverend James Maury near Gordonsville, Virginia. He entered the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia when he was 16 under Professor William Small – who introduced him to the British Empiricists John Locke, Francis Bacon and Isaac Newton. Small recognised Jefferson as being a man of exceptional ability and intelligence. He graduated in 1762.

1765 was an important year for the Jefferson family. His sister Martha married his good friend Dabney Carr – but he also mourned his other sister Jane’s unexpected death when she was only 25 years old. He lived with his mother at Shadwell and started building what was to become an important library.

Jefferson then read law for five years with Virginia’s prominent jurist, George Wythe, and recorded his first legal case in 1767. In two years he was elected to Virginia’s House of Burgesses (the legislature in colonial Virginia).

On January 1, 1772 Jefferson married his third cousin Martha Wayles Skelton, the 23-year-old widow of Bathurst Skelton. She was a frequent hostess for Jefferson in the South Pavilion, Monticello’s first brick building, and she managed a large household. It was a happy marriage

and she bore six children – only two of whom survived more than a few years: Martha (1772-1836), and Mary Wayles (1778-1804). Martha’s father John Wayles died in 1773, and Jefferson and his wife inherited 135 slaves, 11,000 acres of land, and the estate’s significant debts – which contributed to Jefferson’s growing financial problems. Jefferson’s wife Martha died on September 6, 1782 after the birth of her last child, and he promised his wife that he would never marry again – a promise that he kept.

Thomas Jefferson’s first political work in 1774 was to draft a “Summary View of the Rights of British America”. In this document he bravely reminded George III that he was “no more than the chief officer of the People, appointed by the laws, and circumscribed with definite powers, to assist in working the great machine of government”.

Nevertheless, he also maintained that it was not the wish of Virginia to separate from the Mother Country.

Two years later, however, when he was a member of the Second Continental Congress, and was chosen to draft the Declaration of Independence, he argued for declaring states to be free and independent. This Declaration of Independence was regarded as a charter of American and universal liberties. The document proclaimed that “all men are equal in rights, regardless of birth, wealth, or status; that those rights are inherent in each human, a gift of the creator, not a gift of government, and that the government is the servant and not the master of the people”. Jefferson realised that the principles included in the Declaration would present severe challenges, but his poetic vision continued to have a profound influence.

“All honour to Jefferson – to the man who, in the concrete pressure of a struggle for national independence by a single people, had the coolness, forecast, and capacity to introduce into a merely revolutionary document, an abstract truth, and so to embalm it there, that today and in all coming days, it shall be a rebuke and a stumbling-block to the very harbingers of reappearing tyranny and oppression.” – Abraham Lincoln

After Jefferson left Congress in 1776 he returned to Virginia and served in the House of Delegates. He worked closely with James Madison and with his collaboration passed his Statute for Religious Freedom after a legislative

It was during the brief interval of private life following the governorship that Jefferson completed the single book that he authored, “Notes on the State of Virginia” – a controversial publication that warned about the injustice of the institution of slavery.

Jefferson’s book, widely considered the most important book published in America before 1800, argued for the separation of church and state, constitutional government, checks and balances, and individual liberty. It was first published anonymously in Paris in 1785, and in English by John Stockdale in London in 1787.

Jefferson entered public service again in France in 1784, first as trade commissioner and then as Benjamin Franklin’s successor as US minister.

Jefferson’s first term as president was notable not only because of his successful purchase of the Louisiana Territory in 1803 (the Louisiana Purchase), which almost doubled the country’s territory, but also able to reduce the nation’s military forces because of his peace negotiations with France. As president he pursued the nation’s shipping and trade interests against Barbary pirates and aggressive British trade policies. He was re-elected in 1804 but encountered more difficulties on the home and foreign fronts. American foreign trade was diminished when he implemented the Embargo Act of 1807, responding to British threats to US shipping. He is best remembered for maintaining neutrality in the midst of the conflict between Britain and France, but he was not able to avert a war with Britain in 1812 after he had left office and James Madison had assumed the presidency.

After retiring from public office, Jefferson founded the University of Virginia.

Thomas Jefferson, while primarily a planter, lawyer and politician, mastered many disciplines ranging from surveying, horticulture and architecture. He spoke several languages and was a prolific letter writer. Although regarded as a leading spokesman for democracy and republicanism in the era of the Enlightenment, scholars have nevertheless been critical of his private life. There was a severe contradiction between the large number of slaves that he owned and worked on his plantations and his famous declaration that “all men are created equal”. When he was sent by the Congress of the Confederation to join Benjamin Franklin and John Adams in Paris in 1784 he took with him his young daughter Patsy and two servants. During his five years there he played a leading role in shaping the foreign policy of the United States.

In June 1787 he sent for his youngest surviving child, nine-year-old Polly, who was accompanied on her voyage by a young slave girl from Monticello, Sarah “Sally” Hemings, then 16 years old. He had already taken her elder brother James Hemings to Paris as part of his domestic staff, and had him trained in French cuisine. Both Sally Hemings and James Hemings were the illegitimate children of John Wayles, Jefferson’s father-in-law, and his Monticello slave Elizabeth Hemings.

This made them the half-sister and half-brother to Jefferson’s wife Martha Wayles Jefferson.

Sally Hemings worked for two and a half years in Paris as a domestic servant and maid in Jefferson’s household and during that time she began a sexual relationship with Jefferson and became pregnant.

While in Paris, where she was free, she negotiated with Jefferson to return to enslavement at Monticello in exchange for “extraordinary privileges” for herself, and freedom for her unborn children. Decades later Jefferson kept his promise and freed all of Sally Heming’s children when they came of age.

The facts and claims that Thomas Jefferson had fathered children with Sally Hemings, an enslaved woman at Monticello, entered the public arena during Jefferson’s first term as president and has remained a subject of discussion and some disagreement for two centuries. In September 1802 a political journalist James T Callender (a disaffected former ally of Jefferson) wrote in a Richmond, Virginia newspaper that Jefferson had for many years “kept, as his concubine, one of his own slaves”. He added that her name was Sarah “Sally” Hemings and that Jefferson had several children by her. The article was widely distributed and taken up by Jefferson’s Federalist opponents and published in many newspapers during the remainder of Jefferson’s presidency.

Jefferson wisely offered no public response to these personal accusations and made no explicit or private comment on the matter.

The Jefferson-Hemings story was sustained throughout the 19th century by Northern Abolitionists and British critics of American democracy.

THE US Declaration of Independence was signed by, among others, Thomas Jefferson on July 4, 1776.

Written, oral and historical data now conclude that Jefferson was the father of all six of Sally Hemings children listed in Monticello records: Harriet (born 1795; died in infancy); Beverly (born 1798); an unnamed daughter (born 1799; died in infancy); Harriet (born 1801); Madison (born 1805), and Eston (born 1808).

Jefferson kept his word and freed all of Sally Hemings’ children. Beverly and Harriet left Monticello in the early 1820s, and Madison and Eston were freed in his will and left Monticello in 1826. Jefferson did not grant freedom to any other enslaved family units, nor did he grant freedom to Sally Hemings who was permitted to leave Monticello by Jefferson’s daughter Martha Jefferson Randolph not long after Jefferson’s death in 1826, and went to live with her sons Madison and Eston in Charlottesville.

Eston Hemings changed his name to Eston Hemings Jefferson in 1852.

Madison Hemings stated in 1873 that he and his siblings Beverly, Harriet and Eston were Thomas Jefferson’s children.

During the last 17 years of his life Thomas Jefferson generally remained at Monticello. He sold his collection of almost 6,500 books to the government to form the nucleus of the Library of Congress. He embarked on his last great public service at the age of 76 with the founding of the University of Virginia.

Sadly, Jefferson’s retirement was plagued by debt. He was never able to liquidate the sizable debt attached to the inheritance from his fatherin-law John Wayles. His finances worsened with the war of 1812 and the subsequent recession headed by the panic of 1819.

“And to preserve their independence, we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt. We must make our election between economy and liberty, or profusion and servitude.”

Jefferson’s extensive land holdings in Virginia, with the deflated land prices, could no longer cover what he owed.

“My only fear is that I may live too long. This would be a subject of dread to me.”

Thomas Jefferson died on the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1826. His estate and debts were inherited by his daughter, Martha Washington Jefferson Randolph. She began to sell off parts of the estate, and was forced to sell Monticello in 1831. She also sold 130 slaves still held on the estate.

Lucky number 13 for popular paranormal saga

ans have been eagerly awaiting Tanya R Taylor’s new novel, the lucky number 13 in the popular supernatural Cornelius Saga.

The best-selling and awardwinning Bahamian author has just released “‘Til Death Do Us Part”, the 13th book in the series with the tagline: “Would you marry someone if you knew when he was going to die?”

In this latest instalment of the Cornelius Saga, Mira and Bobby are set to finally walk down the aisle after years of courting, but something sinister threatens to shatter what’s meant to be the most beautiful day of their lives. “‘Til Death Do Us Part’, Ms Taylor’s 28th published book, aims to be the “most thrilling, chilling, dramatic” episode in the history of the Cullen family saga yet.

While most of us battle the daily commute, Ms Taylor’s full-time job is writing from her home in western New Providence. When she is not writing, she is marketing her books, doing blog tours, sending out her twice monthly newsletters to her followers from all over the world and answering her fan mail. She has attracted the attention of American media personalities and international book bloggers.

One of her followers recently e-mailed to say how much he appreciated the shout-out, as she was the only person who wished him happy birthday on his special day.

The Cornelius Saga started with book one, simply titled “Cornelius”. It became a number one best-seller in the Teen & Young Adult Multigenerational Family Fiction category on Amazon and appeared on the top 100 Paid Best-sellers’ lists along with Stephen King and Dean Koontz.

Ms Taylor recently travelled to Miami, Florida to receive the Readers’ Favourite 2019 International Silver Medal Book Award in the Young Adult – Paranormal division for the spine-tingling tale.

After writing “Cornelius”, Ms Taylor said she was inspired to continue the story, although she points out that the books in the series can stand alone.

The second book, “Cornelius’ Revenge” came next, featuring a now grown-up version of the series’ protagonist, Mira Cullen.

“After ‘Cornelius’ Revenge’ I had such an awesome response from readers and new subscribers to my newsletters all over the world, I knew I had to continue the series,” said Ms Taylor.

She said she is always open to new literary endeavours.

She has also co-written “I Didn’t Know I Was Beautiful

- The Real & Raw Facts That Every Female on The Planet Should Know”, due to be released on or before April 30.

From the book’s blurb: “I Didn’t Know I Was Beautiful will finally – after centuries of girls and women not realising the power of who they are – breakthrough the myth that you must have the approval of others in order to be secure within yourself; that you must look a certain way or have certain credentials to be worth anything in this world.”

Ms Taylor has even heard from a male reader who said this book is just what he needs.

“As well as pre-ordering ‘I Didn’t Know I Was Beautiful’ for their wives, girlfriends or sisters, men may even choose to get a copy for themselves.

Although the book is geared more toward women, I am certain some of the issues addressed that women encounter – brought front and centre in this book – can be beneficial to men as well.

She said she has plans for more meaningful author collaborations like this in the future.

Meanwhile, Ms Taylor is also working on “Blind Justice”, book three in her Lucille

Pfiffer mystery series. Additionally, she is starting a new cozy series with “Happy Town: Where Dogs Rule (A Cozy Conspiracy)”.

“The story is about a cozy community that’s been turned upside down when a strange phenomenon occurs and the weirdest thing happens where dogs’ and human roles have been completely reversed.

This is going to be a very interesting and intriguing read which will be up for pre-order soon,” the author said.

Teaching kids a love for the Bahamas

ER inability to find an appropriate educational book to gift her nephew was the inspiration for author Phillippa Sands to create a new series of children’s books.

The books follow the adventures of Ava and Andy and were launched during the recent grand opening of the Baby Bliss store in the Mackey Street Plaza.

“My ABC book explores the alphabet by using the letters to teach facts about various Bahamian figures, foods, bush medicines, and landmarks et cetera,” the author explained. “The counting book looks at life under the sea highlighting one of my absolute favourite things about the Bahamas – the marine life. In this particular book, you can find witty descriptions about various animals like the parrotfish, red hind, blue marlin, and yellowtail snapper. The final book of the trio explores the colours while highlighting various facets of Bahamian life.

“These aspects of our lives help to mould and shape us into the people we are and will become. I once heard a quote that states ‘if you know where you are from, it is harder for people to stop you from where you are going’. I want every child in the Bahamas to know who they are, where they come from, take pride in it and use it as motivation to soar.”

Owners of Baby Bliss, the baby boutique offering items for preemies to 12 months and beyond, said they were happy to host the launch of Phillipa’s books, which they feel complement their services and inventory.

“The inspiration for my books came from wanting to purchase my then brand new, and still one and only, nephew an educational birthday gift,” said Phillippa. “The clear choice was to get him a book, and as I started my search for the perfect gift I noticed that very little of the characters in the books looked like him.

I quickly realised that this was a problem and instead

The idea, she said, became more grand as she thought about what genre of books

would benefit her future unborn children, children living in the Bahamas, and children with Bahamian roots outside of the country.

“Quickly, I discovered that there were no books that catered to little ones discussing Bahamian culture. As someone who takes immense pride in being Bahamian, I felt inspired to be a trailblazer in promoting Bahamian culture and presenting Bahamian history in a new light,” she said.

The concepts and themes addressed in the books are “mainly everything Bahamian”, and the overall message is to encourage readers to love “who they are and their history”.

Phillippa said she wants her books to inspire children to seek out more facts about the Bahamas.

“I want my books to elicit family discussion and telling of ‘old time’ stories, as my father would say. I also want my books to make nonBahamians aware of the many great aspects of my beautiful country,” she told Tribune Weekend.

Graphic novelist keeps it real with new book

nspired by the storytelling in Japanese animation, and after years of writing fanfiction for existing intellectual properties, 18-year-old Netsanet WeirHiggs is finally debuting her own original work.

“The Walkers,” the new author said, is a graphic novel that tells the story of Ava and Tobi and their journey outside of “The Wall.” The sci-fi themed book tackles themes such as sexism, religion, idealism and perfectionism.

“I don’t want to spoil anything for potential readers, but it flips the norms a lot. I want my readers to grow and learn alongside the characters; see the world through their eyes and ask questions. And no, they are not demons, they are aliens,” said Netsanet.

And while many fantastical things are depicted in the book, she said 80 percent of the story is very close to our reality, especially when it

comes to the issues that are addressed.

“As for the message”, she said, “there’s multiple, but it all adds up to ‘question what you know’... In conclusion, it is still very much up to the readers as to what they can pull from it.”

When it comes to finding inspiration for her work, the teen said she definitely looks to Japanese anime movies and shows.

“The whole dramatic aspect and storytelling is 10 times better than anything you’d see in Western cartoons. It's party time!

H

ow often in this little town of ours do we have events that clash? All too often! And Saturday is an example of a day where two events supporting animals are being held at the same time.

Jazz at Jacaranda has put together an amazing selection of musicians from various parts of the world with popular, back by demand, Anuschka Wright, one of the Bahamas’ best jazz singers who lives in Montreal.

Two of the musicians hail from Italy: Grammynominated pianist Massimo Colombo, who has more than 30 CDs to his name and teaches at the Conservatory of Bari in Italy. Massimo is joined by his compatriot, the fabulous jazz saxophonist Tommaso Starace, who lives in London, and plays frequently in his native Italy and around the world. On the drums we will be treated to Canadian drummer Anthony Michelli who has over 100 recordings listed in his discography.

This diverse and exciting line-up will be under the musical direction of Bahamian bassist Adrian d’Aguilar.

They will be joined by many of our favourite Bahamian jazz musicians, including Tino Richardson and Lamont Gibson. The performance will take place on a stage surrounded by water at the beautiful private home Jacaranda, in the centre of the city of Nassau. Dinner and drinks will be served in this glamorous and elegant setting. The sitting is very limited and, I am pleased to report, when this article went to press there were very few seats left.

Saturday night’s concert is one of Jazz at Jacaranda’s “Dorian Series” events and this time the organisers have

very generously chosen the Bahamas Humane Society to receive the funds raised.

We are very honoured and grateful.

The very same evening our good friends at BAARK are having their 10th anniversary event that they had to postpone because of the hurricane.

This auspicious organisation is celebrating 11,000 successful spays and neuters.

Their event is at the Old Fort Bay Club out West and promises to be a lively and fun event. Guests are invited to dress up in the clothing of their favourite decade. There will be lots of dancing and prizes and laughter to be had at this exciting event.

So, in essence, our cup runneth over; two terrific, glittering events in one night on this little 19-mile long island.

What strikes me as exciting and encouraging is that there

are enough animal lovers to fill both events.

One more note to add to the animal excitement: the Bahamas Humane Society has announced that nominations are being sought for their coveted B-Humane Awards.

There are five categories: New Providence Resident, Outisland Resident, International, Corporate and Junior. If you have anybody or business in mind, please send nominations to: bahamashumanesocietymembership@gmail.com.

Nominations close on February 10. You do not have to nominate in all five categories.

If you only have one nomination, please send it in to us. We do not wish to overlook anybody who is eligible and who gives selflessly to the animals of this country.

The B-Humane Awards will be presented at yet another animal lover’s event,

the BHS’s “Party for the Animals” on February 29 at 7pm at the Bahamas National Trust Retreat on Village Road. Please contact Amanda Meyers at the Fox Hill Nursery or the BHS shelter for tickets.

I am so thrilled that there are so many different events catering to and supporting the love of animals in Nassau, Some years ago we could have never sustained two events the same night; that just would not have been possible. The animal movement grows daily with more sensitivity and awareness.

The generosity of Jazz at Jacaranda to have singled out the Bahamas Humane Society to benefit from the money raised on this Saturday night is very touching. Many Bahamas Humane Society adoptions dogs have lived at Jacaranda over the years and still do. They have become music lovers and you don’t hear a woof during any of the performances!

I would like to encourage my readers to take part in all these different and upcoming events. We often feel that living in the Bahamas we miss out on some of the more sophisticated entertainment that people enjoy in other parts of the world. Yet here we are with all types of entertainment, something to suit and appeal to everyone, right here without having to board an aircraft.

I personally am so very excited to hear and enjoy Massimo Colombo and Tommaso Starace perform on Saturday night. If you can’t travel to Italy right now, well Italy has come to your doorstep. I have been fortunate enough to hear them at the Eleuthera All that Jazz Festival, along with the amazing Anuschka Wright, and I know we all have quite a treat in store for us on Saturday.
