ROACH BROTHERS TO CARRY FLAG AT COMMONWEALTH GAMES 31ST ‘CATCH By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net BROTHERS Cameron and Dorian Roach, once considered among the top swimmers in the island nation, have switched their gear to triathlon where they will carry the Bahamian flag at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. On Sunday, Cameron Roach beat out a strong six-man field at the Bahamas Triathlon Association’s trials to earn the one spot on the Bahamas Olympic Committee’s contingent that will head to the Gold Coast, Australia, for the games, April 4-15. Using his strong background in swimming, Roach was the first competitor out of the water in the 750-metre swim in 14 minutes and

seven seconds; maintained his lead in the 20 kilometre bike in 32:13:00 and coasted to victory in the 5K run in 22:13 as he finished in an accumulated time of 1:08:32. He beat out Olympian Mark Holowesko, a long time triathlete and world-class sailor, who posted a time of 1:11:54 (14:48 in the swim, 32:16.00 in the bike and 24:50.00 in the run). Spencer Deleveaux came in third in 1:13.15 (17:50 in swim, 34:44.00 bike and 20:41 run). Rounding out the top five were Sean Andrews in 1:14.23 (14:50 swim, 32:22.00 bike and 26:11.00 run) and Sean Farrington, who did 1:15:40 (16:06 swim, 35:17:00 bike and 1:15:40 swim). Simon Lowe didn’t finish the course and Ben Derbyshire didn’t start the trials that was sponsored by Powerade and Race PROMPT.

Dorian Roach, the older brother at age 42, will travel as the coach of the team. He said he’s really excited about the accomplishment of his 39-year-old brother. “We are glad that we got this opportunity to qualify to go,” said Roach, who serves as the president of the BTA that was revived in 2015 and has made great progress in the past two years. “Cameron has been doing really well in triathlon and I think he will do even better because we have a very vigorous training programme for him leading up to the games.” Roach, who represented the Bahamas at the Commonwealth Games in 1998 in rugby as a player, said after they both failed to make it to the Olympic Games in CAMERON (left) and Dorian Roach.

ME IF YOU CAN’ REGATTA ALL SET FOR MONTAGU

By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net MARK the date down: February 17-18 for the staging of the 31st “Catch Me If You Can St Valentine’s Massacre” when “love will be in the air” on Montagu Bay. Organiser Eleazor ‘the Sailing Barber’ Johnson said this year’s event will be a little different than the past in that there will be only competition for the A class boats when the event gets started on Saturday’s opening day. But he said the focus will remain on Sunday’s grand finale when his B class boat Lady in Red Lady Nathalie will again be given a head start over the A class boats and they will have to catch his boat before it crosses the finish line. “The regatta is going to be a very big one even though we are only having the A class boats compete,” said Johnson, the owner of the Lady Nathalie. “The A class boats will provide a lot of competition because a lot of people want to see them compete.” Since starting the “Catch Me If You Can” aspect to the regatta, Johnson said his Lady Nathalie holds a 17-14 advantage over the A class boats, like the Red Stripe and the Courageous, who have caught his boat the most. The Lady Nathalie, normally skippered by Clyde Rolle, was successful in crossing the line before she got caught last year. Johnson said he’s looking forward to the trend continuing this year. Race commodore Stafford Armbrister normally sets a 20-30 minute head start on the course for the Lady Nathalie. Johnson said what makes this regatta so important is that it will be the last one

SENIOR girls in action yesterday. The Jordan Prince William Falcons routed the Queen’s College Comets 66-27. Photo: Shawn Hanna/Tribune Staff with 12 points and Bryanna Munroe scored eight. Late in the third, Bastian tied the score at 24 when she split a pair at the line and gave the Falcons a 27-24 lead headed into the fourth on a desperation heave from near half court. She continued her momentum with the first basket of

the fourth quarter to take a five-point lead and the Falcons’ run eventually extended to seven. The first quarter was scoreless for the first three minutes before both teams made field goals on consecutive possessions to tie again at four. Munroe made a pull up jumper only

to have Bastian respond with a runner for JPW. The Comets reeled off five consecutive points and ended the period on a 7-1 run to take a 13-7 lead into the second. The Falcons battled back on a run and a layup from Charlton to trim the deficit to 15-13.

The Comets went on another 7-0 run to pull away and regain control with a 22-17 lead into the half. The Falcons will advance to face the winners of the St John’s and St Augustine’s matchups in the best-of-three championship series.
