'Down home' cooking in a historic spot

isiting Avery’s Restaurant, Bar and Lounge located in the historic Adelaide Village is like taking a much needed break from the stress of every day life. Not only is the scenery Instagram worthy, but the food is tasty as well.

The restaurant has been Avery’s for many years, but briefly closed for rebranding efforts and reopened in early 2019, continuing the legacy of the late Assistant Commissioner of Police Avery Ferguson, who founded the eatery bearing his name.

These days its a hot spot for Bahamian favourites such as chicken wings, guava duff, boil fish and other seafood, and Johnny cake – all with an Avery’s twist.

“One of my new favourites is the curry chicken fritters,” said Regina Bonaby, the restaurant’s consultant.

“We are the only ones who do it and we just asked the chef to try creating something unique and different and he ran with it.”

She said a visit to Avery’s is like finding your own special island nook.

“It’s the place where you can have an old-fashioned home-cooked meal, but in a modern environment.”

The restaurant’s upper level includes an inside sports bar and private room to host your own special events. There is also a smoking room separate from the other areas where patroons can enjoy cigars or a hookah.

Step outside and enjoy the cool ocean breeze and the view of Adelaide Creek. It’s a great spot to have a

signature drink and listen to some live music as well.

The restaurant is open from 10am to 1am Mondays through Saturdays, and on Sundays offers brunch.

He knows how to party. More importantly, he knows how to get the party started.

Nassau’s unofficial karaoke king tells Cara Hunt all about hosting the perfect event and getting people to belt out their favourite tunes at full volume in a public setting.

S

ean Munnings has been one of the country’s leading karaoke deejays for almost two decades, encouraging party-goers to grab the mic and belt out their own cover versions of their favourite songs.

“When I came back from college in 1996 to work at PricewaterhouseCoopers. (Going out at night) I became discontented with the restricted song choice and lack of disco lighting by professional deejays at parties,” he told Tribune Weekend.

So Sean decided to take matters into his own hands and create a side hustle for himself.

“I decided to deejay with flair my way on the side.”

He decided to try his hand specifically at karaoke after hosting game night at his parents’ home.

“DJ Victor ‘Slic Vic’ Rollins attended one of my game night events and was so impressed with my karaoke library that he rented my specialised deejay equipment and disco lighting for his karaoke gigs. He was hosting a gig at Compass Point in 2006 on Fridays and I filled in for him two times when he was sick only to find out that management expected me continue the

karaoke going forward. That’s how my professional karaoke hosting career started.”

Karaoke, a compound of Japanese words “kara” meaning “empty” and “ōkesutora” meaning “orchestra”, started as a form of interactive entertainment during dinner parties in the 1970s. It quickly evolved through the use of professional karaoke machines, and today the global karaoke market has been estimated to be worth nearly $10 billion.

Sean said in his view karaoke is so popular worldwide because it comes with an appealing sense of freedom.

“Karaoke is the expansion of experiencing the freedom of singing in the car or the shower. ‘Da Bathroom Voice’ is actually the name of my ever-increasing karaoke song book. Some people do karaoke competitively as soloists or as song specialists to showcase a different side of themselves, or express their vocal range. I secretly do it for the fun group experience which hides my lack of vocal talent,” he said.

“Others like the traditional drunk experience where anything goes and even the worst sounding singer can get a huge applause for performance and deafening conviction.”

“I enjoy allowing other people to shine brightly and have fun.”

Sean said another appeal of karaoke is that it is interactive.

“Unlike a dancing event the mood and song choice is dictated by individual participants more than a crowd,” he explained.

Song choice is of course important and Sean advises providing a mix of popular new material and

old goodies for a successful karaoke party.

“Before retiring from being a music deejay I played the same popular songs over and over, but as a karaoke jockey I’m at the mercy of the finicky customer which can be challenging because the wrong type of song choice can cause you to lose

As for the songs which are sure to get a crowd going, Sean said: “The karaoke songs most people sing are ‘My Way’, ‘The Gambler’, ‘Don’t Stop Believin’ ‘, ‘Hello’, ‘Three Little Birds’, ‘Love Shack’, ‘Hey Jude’, ‘Ghost Move’, ‘Tell Ol I Ain’t Here’, ‘Sweet Caroline’, ‘Lucy’, ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’, ‘Purple Rain’, ‘Wonderwall’, ‘Dancing Queen’ and ‘I Will Survive’.”

After all these years in the game, Sean has perhaps the country’s largest song library under his Karaoke

Night brand, hosted by Deep Waters Bahamas, which was named after his published poetry book “Deep Waters Volume One”.

He is constantly adding to his song library to be the largest and most up to date in the country.

“I continue to expand my karaoke offering in languages like Portuguese, Spanish, French, Italian, Filipino and Hindi for international residents and guests. My goal has always been to promote my venue first, which is why tons of people

have attended events hosted by Deep Waters Bahamas but are not familiar with my name,” he said.

“I pride myself in being the best international karaoke service provider, whether it be in having the most updated family-oriented karaoke song selection, the most sparkling microphones, the largest Bahamian and Caribbean karaoke library, or exquisite vocal equipment.”

However, he noted that the local karaoke scene is not without its challenges.

“The karaoke craze has expanded a lot over the past 17 years since I started in 2006. Back then I used to walk around with five or more large folders of numerous purchased CDs. Now the digital age has allowed deejays and homebodies to enjoy smaller libraries on cable TV or the internet. Karaoke service providers like me faded into the background as experienced vocalists like Oral ‘Sing-a-gram’ Hudson and savvy MCs and comedians like Demetrius ‘The Entertainer’ Smith became well known,” he said.

“These days, due to the ease of availability of basic karaoke software and illegal downloading, many younger deejays offer a condensed service and so the karaoke industry appears more saturated. As with all things, time allows the best to persevere and I believe karaoke services will leave an indelible mark on Bahamian entertainment and overall weekly enjoyment.”

Another challenge, he said, is that many establishments don’t promote karaoke as much as they would a band or a weekend DJ event.

“Due to deejays offering karaoke as an extended service, businesses tend to confuse their master of the ceremony services with a professional karaoke jockey service. Some venues lack faith in the karaoke product and group it with fashion shows, comedy shows et cetera, even though a karaoke outing has proven to be a weekly money-earner once properly promoted. Smaller businesses struggle to host events themselves with only a likeable staff via the limited song libraries available on the internet or cable TV to mitigate costs. Others relate it solely to the drunken bar experience, not acknowledging that like a deejayed activity, a karaoke host can tailor the type and volume of the music to (any) event.”

Despite these challenges, Sean said he loves what he does.

“The same joy I experienced in hosting poetry readings in the early 2000s at the Nassau Beach Hotel is conveyed in my karaoke events. I enjoy allowing other people to shine brightly and have fun. It makes my day when people who have attended numerous karaoke events but hardly or never sing delight in belting lyrics confidently at my events.”

BAMSI takes on fine dining at the Poop Deck

T

he Bahamas Agriculture and Marine Science Institute (BAMSI) has partnered with one of Nassau’s fine dining establishments in a move to showcase the versatility and unique flavours of its Androsgrown produce. Offering these specialty items as part of their Thanksgiving feast, and now incorporating them into the holiday and regular menu, the culinary staff at the Poop Deck Restaurant at Sandyport, West Bay Street, provides diners with a distinctive experience focused on fresh, quality ingredients, bold flavours and textures, and creative concepts.

Initially featured as part of the Rotary Club of Nassau’s annual Thanksgiving luncheon, the Poop Deck served up a warm puree of butternut squash, richly flavoured with the decadent spices of curry and coconut, and aromatic herbs such as ginger. Accompanying the savoury dish was a salad of crisp, crunchy, vibrant greens, tossed with tangy red tomatoes, slivers of sweet carrots, cool curls of cucumber and the zestiest of onions, all accompanied by a smooth vinaigrette of Andros papaya.

These two Andros-infused starters balanced out the entrées of roasted turkey with seafood stuffing and cranberry sauce, island-style baked ham with sweet potatoes, and roasted vegetables.

Proprietor of the West Bay Street restaurant Frederick Lightbourn was excited about the opportunity to have fresh produce on his menu. The addition of BAMSI’s produce to his kitchen – lettuce, cucumber, butternut squash and papaya – means that he is able to say (just like with the fish he brings to the table on a daily basis) that his guests dine on the freshest fare available on the island.

“It’s great produce! Anything picked fresh today as opposed to being picked weeks ago in another country to sit on a shelf, then get on a truck and be driven to another location to sit on a boat before it arrives here, will be better.

And because they are picked younger there’s no time for them to develop full flavour.

The produce comes in super fresh from BAMSI and it’s a far better product,” he said.

Newly installed BAMSI Chairman Stephen Turnquest said part of the Institute’s focus is bringing to market the best quality items possible, not

only for the Bahamian public to enjoy, but which will also support a healthy lifestyle. He noted that produce coming out of BAMSI’s research and tutorial farm, its aquaponics centre and through its agricultural partners in Andros, have been grown using best practices inclusive of planting methods, irrigation and fertilization and post-harvest procedures to ensure the produce arrives in the best condition offering the highest quality nutrients and vitamins for the consumer.

“BAMSI’s goal has always been, in addition to driving down food imports into the country by enlarging the agricultural community, the goal has always been to grow the right variety of produce under the right conditions to bring about the richest possible harvest. And as a result of this focus we’ve been able to make inroads in the Bahamian market – partnering with the top wholesale and retail gro-

cers and now making connections with the best restaurants in New Providence,” said Mr Turnquest said.

While consumers may have become numb to certain trigger words advertisers love to use to highlight their products – “fresh” being one of them – the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Mr Lightbourn said as he considered how to use the BAMSI and what ingredients would complement the array of items, he focused on bringing out and building on the best of aspects of each vegetable.

“I was sitting down thinking about what works best with say, the squash, which is an unsung hero. Here we had these lovely vegetables which

can be used in many different ways, and I thought a soup is nice; it can be a little bit daring and exciting. And the papaya vinaigrette, there’s so much flavour inside that. It came out better than I expected. It adds an amazing bouquet of flavours on top of the salad – all with the fresh strips of papaya,” he said.

As long as BAMSI is able to supply consistently, Mr Lightbourn said he is happy to find space for the produce on his menu. “We’ll definitely continue with the vinaigrette, and we’re working on a dessert with the papaya, and we’d also love to use some of your broccoli. We’re excited to delve into more of your products, I can’t wait to get into the livestock.”

A love letter to island living of yesteryear

I

n his new book, “From Cat Island He Came”, Paul King documents his formative years growing up in the beautiful settlement of Dumfries and pays tribute to a place he calls a “cradle of Bahamian culture”.

Part love letter to his favourite place on earth, part history lesson about what island life was really like from the mid 1940s to the early ‘60s, “From Cat Island He Came”, Mr King believes, is an important piece of work

when it comes to the preservation of Bahamian heritage.

“The main reason I wrote this book is because many of us have interesting stories about growing up in the islands but we don’t document it in writing. I wanted to share what my experience was like growing up there for the first 16 years of my life before I moved to Nassau to attend school,” the author told Tribune Weekend.

Mr King said he hopes the book will be interesting to both the older and younger generations.

“I hope that when persons of the younger generation read this book they will be able to understand that things were not always as instant as they are now and how different their lives are from their parents and grandparents. For readers of my generation, in particular those who had similar experiences, I want the book to serve as a reminder for us to never forget from whence we came.”

Throughout his book, he uses anecdotes to recount the inherent challenges and harsh realities of Out Island life, all while highlighting the spirit of resilience that allowed the island’s inhabitants to survive and ultimately thrive.

“Our family was dirt poor,” he said, “I know what it is to go barefoot because you had no shoes, or to go bed hungry because you had no food. But in spite of this we were content with what we had,” he said. “There were a few children in the settlement who may have been able to get a gun set for Christmas or roller skates, but I was lower on the totem pole.”

Still, despite those challenges he said he had “an excellent, beautiful life and wouldn’t trade the first 16 years of my life for anything.”

To Mr King, there is something very special about the island of his birth.

“Cat Island is very unique in its physical beauty; it remains very unspoiled – no traffic lights and miles of beaches. It has the country’s highest elevation and beautiful blue holes, but it has also been the cradle of Bahamian culture. Cat Island has produced Sir Sidney Poitier, the Region Bells, the Lassie Doh Boys, the Rahming Brothers, among many others. And I would encourage visitors to travel to sites like the Hermitage, St Mary’s Anglican Church and St Saviour’s Anglican Church.”

He added that Cat Island is also very well-known for its flour cakes and other culinary delights.

Additionally, he said, the island has also produced many civil servants

Mr King will be signing copies of his book at the Chapter One Bookstore on Saturday from 1pm to 3pm. During the event, he will read excerpts from the book.

He hopes there will soon be a copy of the book in every Cat Island home, and that it will be used as a school resource to teach history and social studies.

American author highlights beauty of the Bahamas in new children's book

HE BAHAMAS is a place where author Robert Constant first learned to swim, dive and cook.

“It was actually the first place where I saw men get in the kitchen and actually cook,” said the American author who has been travelling back and forth to the country since he was six weeks old.

He has collected and documented his experiences over the years in a new children’s book called “Hello Grandma!”

The author, who is of Bahamian descent, introduced his second published book last weekend at the Logos Bookstore in Harbour Bay. It was released in conjunction with Mascot Books with illustrations by James Zeger.

The book follows the adventures of Saniyah and Robbie who are visiting their grandmother in Nassau. They soon realise that keeping in touch online can never compare to saying “Hello Grandma!” in person.

The book takes readers on a journey to the island, as seen

through the lens of a curious child. Young readers get to learn about Bahamian music, festivals, food, customs, and the country’s beautiful wildlife.

“It is really about my children having an opportunity to travel to the Bahamas and particularly go to the beach, go over Paradise Island and enjoy different foods,” Robert told Tribune Weekend.

“Those are the things I enjoyed as a child and now my kids are experiencing. I wanted to capture that. That is primarily what this book is about: promoting the Bahamas, particularly after the storm devastated Abaco and Freeport. I want people to know this is a beautiful place for people to come visit. The people are wonderful here.

This place has helped shaped me as a person and I wanted

to be able to share this story with the world.”

Robert had been playing with the idea of publishing the book for some time. “I wanted to do some research and I wanted to make sure the things I was writing about were fairly accurate,” he said.

This story uses colourful illustrations to highlight the importance of family while celebrating the Caribbean and all its traditions. And having the book illustrated took some time.

“I did a number of test sketches and when I saw James’s work I said, ‘That was it’. We sat down and really conceptualised. I had to question myself and figure out what is the story I am trying to tell. James’ job was to bring the story to life. I think he did an excellent job at it because

he captured the beauty of the water and the land,” the author said.

The book is for elementary school aged children. Robert said it aims to teach young readers about the importance of family and learning to experience life.

“I have so many family members that have done significant things. When you come here you learn so many of those things. Because you know from where you came, you can really set a great course for your future, and that was what I hope people see in my book. That it is not just about going to this place, but it is about family. It is about taking kids out and letting them experience life outdoors. Everything we did was outdoors,” he said of his family trips.

Robert also hopes this book will instill a greater appreciation of the Bahamas in people everywhere.

“It’s not just a tourist destination. People live here.

There is culture here. There is a world people don’t get to see often. There is this beautiful place where you have to partake and enjoy. I want people

to be able to say, ‘Let me find out what this place is really about’,” he said.

Robert received his bachelor’s degree from Tuskegee University in 1998 and his master’s degree in Sports Administration from St Thomas University in 2001.

Throughout his career, he has worked with many esteemed American universities, including Southern Methodist University, the University of Virginia, and Rutgers University. He currently serves as the associate director of Leadership Gifts at Princeton University.

Commenting on “Hello Grandma!”, Dr Rodney Smith, president of the University of the Bahamas, said: “This book is not only an enjoyable read, it is also very educational, exposing young readers to the culture, food and excitement of visiting, exploring, and totally enjoying island life.”

“Hello Grandma!” is Robert’s second children’s book, preceded by the five-star rated hit “Hey Tuskegee!”

Finding a modern woman's 'Identity'

ONIGHT kicks off the first event on the 2020 calendar for Doongalik Gallery & Studios.

Among welcoming numerous artists to exhibit, the gallery said it wants to revitalise its commitment to taking creative arts and culture to the next level.

And starting things off is “Identity” – a group show of new works by artists Nowé Harris-Smith and Spurgeonique Morley tonight from 6pm to 9pm. The show will provide its viewers with the digitally-influenced approach of both artists’ works in their own unique style. It will be on display until mid-February.

The exhibition was inspired by their growth as women and individuals. The overall theme is self-exploration as the works depict this growth, along with their emotions and existence as women.

Harris-Smith’s work explores not only her experiences, but her identity as an androgynous woman, while Morley’s work explores personal standards that equate to beauty, sexuality, and an acceptance of oneself. The artists hope that this exhibition promotes self-acceptance and encourages others to express their realities. They also hope it gives viewers the confidence to live authentically.

As for her part, Morley desires to express personal and artistic growth in her work while also examining the important role it plays in the creation of her artwork which she hopes will nourish her audience.

She said although her work comes from very emotional and personal experiences,

SPURGEONIQUE Morley she wants it to be relatable to all women, and to empower them.

Morley ponders the fact that in life, women at some point have to grow through self-love and acceptance of their own beauty.

Harris-Smith’s work is fuelled by humanism within the environments she occupies. Her aim as a mixed media artist is to provide a platform for discussion in relatable contexts.

Fascinated by bodies, life, and cultural practices within her diaspora, Harris-Smith captures fragments of everyday realities. Whether abstracted forms or realistic photographs, Harris-Smith’s work is driven by human

NOWÉ Harris-Smith perception and existence. She seeks to use her aesthetics to provide an outlook into the realm of human life.

Apart from hosting exhibitions the gallery is also moving

forward with plans to keep creative cultural flourishing in the Bahamas.

“Before Jackson (Burnside) died his vision was that the year 2020 more visitors would

be coming to the Bahamas for our culture and heritage. And our goal is to make people aware of what he said. We have been trying with creative Nassau to introduce this Orange Economy to be able to measure and how creativity has been helping,” said Pam Burnside, cultural advocate and gallerist.

Mrs Burnside said since the passing of her husband, who was a renowned artist, the gallery has been making plans to establish a library at the studios.

“He was so into books and we have been working on the library since he died over the past nine years. We hope to open the library this year so people can come and use all of the books that we have here for research,” she said.

In the coming months a new straw museum will also open at Doongalik which will seek to preserve the history of the straw industry and create awareness about its vital role in the Bahamian economy and culture.

“We are going to continue promoting Bahamian culture because that is what we are all about. We have to be who we ‘is and not who we ain’t’,” said Mrs Burnside.

Doongalik Studios is open from Monday to Wednesday from 10am to 4pm and Saturdays from 9am to 1pm.

Karin says: “It’s not a cookie cutter look, I’ll give her that. And in general it’s an interesting idea: an elegant silver crop top with a high-slit skirt.

But for some reason the skirt is really high-waisted and hits her at a point where it makes her torso look weirdly broad. It’s not quite where it needs to be.”

Cara says: “This is not a great look.

The top just reminds me of a sports bra with glitter. There is not much difference between this and the other trashy crop tops we saw all last year.

And then there is high-waisted skirt; just so random and I hate the split placement. Usually I like her style, but this is a no for me.”

Karin says: “This is surprisingly staid and old-fashioned for Lupita. She still looks good (how could she not?), but it’s just all so underwhelming. The floral pattern is too old for her, and the bandeau style top looks weird, as does the belt. Also, the black and white combo is not it; she should stick to jewel tones.”

Karin says: “Twitter had a lot to say about this look. It’s definitely a very mature look for a 15-year-old girl. The V neckline, especially in other photos, is very deep. But besides that, it just looks like something a 45-year-old soap star should be wearing. It’s just way too much material. Millie, enjoy being a teen, there will be plenty of time to dress like your mom later on.”

Cara says: “So this I do like. I don’t care what Twitter says. The all white looks crisp and clean and the proportions are perfect on her. I love the pants, coat/dress combo; very unique. I also like the subtle but effective blinged out accessories as well and her sleek hair.”

Cara says: “This is a huuuge bow, and I am here for it. It’s fun and she can pull it off. My only complaint or small thing I would change would be to maybe have the waist a bit more fitted to balance out the bow. The pattern on the dress and the satin material are lovely.”

Karin says: “This was one of the few really big gowns on the red carpet, and I love it. Whenever you get the chance to wear a ball gown you should. Of course this is a bit more avant-garde than your usual ball gown; I love the orange/magenta colour contrast. She looks great. And check out her guns!”

Cara says: “Well, this is quite the dramatic ball gown. Love the colour contrast. But It is a lot of dress.

However, I think it works on her. I personally would have swapped the necklace for drop earrings, but I think she looks stunning overall.”

The extremely short skirt with the long train looks ridiculous on her, and it’s especially inappropriate for an occasion like this. Also, it definitely looks like the dress is wearing her and not the other way around. It totally overwhelms her.”

Cara says: “Simply a ‘no’ for me. The print is a bit washed out, and although it’s meant to be sexy, I feel it just hangs on her in an unflattering way. And there are so many unnecessary style choices like the bows, the train... just a whole lot of nothing going on.”

Karin says: “I’m loving this peach reiteration of the glamour of Audrey Hepburn. Like with Audrey’s style, this is sheer elegance and sheer simplicity at the same time. And I kinda love that she chose to wear white opera length gloves with this dress; it gives the look a flair of drama.

This is the perfect understated look.”

Cara says: “Definitely getting the Audrey Hepburn vibe with this outfit; it’s very lovely. Simple and elegant.

The white gloves may have been a bit extra, but hey, they definitely add that Hollywood flair to the proceedings.

And here is a subtle bow I can get behind. I also love the simplicity of her hairdo.”

Karin says: “The Queen! Well, not quite, I suppose. Helena has her distinct sense of style that she never sacrifices, regardless of the occasion.

And while I hate the platform shoes, I can’t deny that this ensemble actually works. I especially love the blingedout sunglasses, and the dress is pretty.”

Cara says: “Clearly she is here to have fun. Look at those sunglasses! Yes, I love them. The shoes are indeed a bit hideous, but the dress is all right. And altogether it’s actually a quite cohesive look and not too outrageous. It’s a win for me.”

Lil Tee has big dreams Bahamian rapper is all about the hooks

ike so many other artists in the Bahamas, Trevis Mott first discovered his love of music while singing in a church choir as a child. As he grew older, he realised he had a real ear for it, and decided to learn how to play the drums.

He received nothing but support from his family. His sister was his number one fan and taught him how to play the keyboard. Meanwhile, his brother inspired him with his passion for hip hop.

“A friend of mine was also heavily into music; he had a home studio where I went by to sing hooks, which was all I ever did. I became really good at coming up with catchy hooks. Even though it was a small part in their songs, to me it was the most important part. So I pride myself on always making a hook you can remember,” Trevis told Tribune Weekend.

Going by the stage name Lil Tee, Trevis recently had the opportunity to be featured on a track and music video for the song “Brand New” with a good friend of his, US-based rapper The Real CEO.

“Although my part wasn’t long, I made sure it was significant. He sent me the track and he told me to add something to it. I sent it back and he loved it,” he said.

Trevis’ most recent work was single ‘Like Me’, a nice, smooth hip hop and R&B record.

“I felt like it was the perfect song to come out of the gate with. The inspiration for the song came from my observation of women who have had bad breaks with men who they thought were ‘the one’ or perfect for them based on their checklist. The song was just to tell women to take a leap of faith with men they probably would not have dated; a guy like me...any guy.”

As for how the public has reacted to the song so far, he said: “I knew a lot of younger folks would love it, but surprisingly some older folk vibe with it also. I decided to shoot a music video to complement the song. It gained a good amount of view and likes.”

His plan for 2020 is to put out more content; release at least two new songs, be consistent and build a solid fan

base both here at home and abroad.

“The feedback and support have been great nationally and internationally. After releasing ‘Like Me’, I went to Virginia and New York to do some promotion. I visited HBCUs and other colleges, and the reception surpassed my expectations. They love the quality of the video and song and the beauty of the Bahamas,” he said.

“My goal is to become an international recording artist, travel the world and perform and win Grammys. I want to be the guy that is born and raised in the Bahamas to make it as a mainstream solo artist and carve a path for other talented Bahamian artists. I’m not doing it full time, but I am

using the money from my job to fund my career. Basically I’m taking care of my reality while chasing my dreams.”

Young Bahamians get chance to shine with model behaviour Competition winner gets UK exposure

By ALESHA CADET | Tribune Features writer | acadet@tribunemedia.net As a former model, Bernadette Robinson knows first-hand how hard it is to break into the fashion industry. That is why she is putting together a new talent show called Top Model Worldwide Bahamas to give young, aspiring models a chance to shine and show the world what they have to offer.

This is not the first time Bernadette has put the spotlight on local talent. Between 2000 and 2002, she hosted a model search in Grand Bahama in conjunction with the Ford Modelling Agency of New York called Supermodel of the World Bahamas.

The winners were afforded the opportunity to travel and compete internationally.

“Opportunities in this country are limited for models to travel and get on the world’s stage, so I just wanted to open a door to give them that opportunity,” she told Tribune Weekend as she discussed her Top Model Worldwide Bahamas event.

The upcoming show will be a weekend of events and feature a VIP social, starting on February 8, with the grand finale set for February 9 in Meliá’s Independence Ballroom at 8pm. All 19 finalists – six male models and 13 female models – will compete in swimwear and evening wear categories, as well in a denim showcase and haute couture segment.

a speaking engagement with Lashant Gardiner of GIT (Get in Touch), who spoke on the topic of self-building and selfbranding. They now have an upcoming visit to Perfec-Tone where they will learn about proper skin care, as well as a make-up application and hair care. They will also attend a basic etiquette course.

“I believe events like these are very important for character-building and development for the youth,” said Bernadette. “Events like these give them the opportunity to express themselves and feel free to be who they are and do what they love. We have watched these young adults come out of their shells and

develop more in their modelling, and their personalities are beginning to shine.”

The participating models, she added, have come together like an extended family over the past few weeks.

“They blend so well, there is a cohesiveness in this group that is indescribable...They care about each other and share and give each other ideas and are such a huge support system for each other when they don’t have it anywhere else. That’s so hard to find these days,” she said.

For Bernadette, this goes beyond modelling. She said it has been a truly rewarding experience preparing for the show and she has met so many

remarkable young people with huge ambitions for their lives.

“They tell me that this is such a fulfilling experience for them because they’re building confidence within themselves to step into a realm where they were afraid to step before and do what they love, and that is to model. I also work along with a team who are remarkable persons like Travis Bowe, Philip Cooper, and Bronson Sands, who all work tirelessly to assist with the success of this show, and most of all, the success of our finalists, not just on the modelling stage, but on the defining stage of life,” she said.

Admission for the finale show on February 9 is $40 in advance, $50 at the door, and table seating is $65 per person.

The twilight years of a master artist Pablo Picasso

– Part III Sir Christopher Ondaatje describes Picasso’s life after the liberation of Paris in 1944, and his final years.

In 1944, after the liberation of Paris, Picasso, now 63 years old, began a romantic relationship with Françoise Gilot who was 40 years younger than he was. He had grown tired of and abandoned his mistress Dora Maar, who had spent most of the war years with him in and out of Paris. She had been both a model and an inspiration.

Françoise Gilot was born in Paris and was raised in an environment that fostered interest in both the arts and sciences. Her father was a respected businessman, and her mother a watercolour painter. Although her father was determined that his daughter become a lawyer, her independent PABLO Picasso (October 25, 1881 – April 8, 1973) spirit compelled her to lead a double

life, secretly studying art instead of attending her morning law classes.

Passionate to pursue her art studies, she became estranged from her parents and sought the support of other family members while she established her first studio in her grandmother’s home in Paris. She was a strong-willed young woman. Gilot started law school in her late teens but before she could graduate the Germans had invaded Paris.

The Germans detested French people studying law and for a while she was put on a list of agitators who had to go to a police station every day to sign a form. In the end she dropped out of law school and used it as an excuse to start her life as an artist.

She was already making a name for herself when in 1943 she met Picasso in a café. In 1946 they started living together in a decade-long relationship.

Gilot thus became witness and a participant in one of the last great periods of modern art movements in Europe.

Their circle of friends included poets, philosophers, writers, and many of the legends of the art world such as Braque, Chagall, Cocteau, and Matisse. In her 1964 book, “Life with Picasso”, Gilot describes Picasso’s abusive treatment and many infidelities, which eventually led her to leave him, taking her two children Claude Picasso, born in 1947, and Paloma Picasso, born in 1949, with her. Their artistic union was shared with their children whose antics and acrobatic pictures were often captured in their drawings and paintings.

Picasso was now 70 years old and many of his drawings and paintings depicted an aging old dwarf as the doting lover of a beautiful young woman.

In late 1953, the relationship with Picasso had run its course and Gilot left the home she shared with him in Vallauris. It was a severe blow to Picasso. Before then, with Picasso’s encouragement, Gilot had divorced her then husband Luc Simon, with a plan to marry Picasso to secure the rights of her children as Picasso’s legitimate heirs. But by then Picasso had already met the young Jacqueline Roque (1927-1986) who worked at the Madoura Pottery in Vallauris on the French Riviera where Picasso made and painted ceramics. She became his lover, and then his second wife in 1961 – Picasso marrying her secretly as an act of revenge against Françoise Gilot. Jacqueline Roque would remain Picasso’s wife for the rest of his life.

In 1970, Françoise Gilot moved to America and married Jonas Salk, a pioneering scientist who invented the first polio vaccine. She stayed with him until he died in 1995.

By the 1950s and 1960s Picasso had become an enormously wealthy artist and could afford a large Gothic house which he constructed in Vallauris, as well as villas in the South of France such as Mas Notre-Dame-de-Vie on the outskirts of Mougins, and in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur. He was an international celebrity, with often

Picasso was exceptionally prolific throughout his long life. His final works were a mixture of styles, his means of expression in constant flux until the end. Devoting his full energies to his work, Picasso became more daring, his works more colourful and expressive, and from 1968 to 1971 he produced a torrent of paintings and hundreds of copperplate etchings. At the time these works were dismissed

by most art critics as pornographic fantasies of an impotent old man or the slapdash works of an artist well past his prime. Only later, after Picasso’s death, when the rest of the art world had moved on from abstract expressionism, did the critical community come to see the late works of Picasso as prefiguring Neo-Expressionism.

The total number of artworks Picasso produced in his life is estimated at 50,000, comprising 1,888 paintings; 1,228 sculptures; 2,880 ceramics; over 12,000 drawings; and many thousands of prints. His most important medium was painting. In his paintings Picasso used colour as an expressive element, but relied on drawing rather than subtleties of colour to create form and space. He sometimes added sand to his paint to vary its texture. Analysts have also confirmed that Picasso used ordinary house paint in The Red Armchair (1931) as well as in some other paintings. Much of Picasso’s paintings in his late years were done at night using artificial light.

Picasso’s early sculptures were carved from wood or modelled in wax or clay, but from 1909 to 1928 he abandoned modelling and instead made sculptural constructions using an array of materials. Guitar (1912) is a relief construction made of sheet metal and wire – a three dimensional planar counterpart of Cubist painting – a revolutionary departure from traditional approaches to modelling and carving. Picasso always displayed an interest in subject matter and showed a marked working in several styles at the same time. His 1917 paintings (all in the Museum Picasso in Barcelona) include the pointillist Woman with a Mantilla, the Cubist Figure in an Armchair and the naturalistic Harlequin.

In 1921 he simultaneously painted two versions of Three Musicians for the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Although his Cubist works approach abstraction, he never completely relinquished objects of the real world as subject matter. He had a keen eye for artistic drama and used guitars, violins and bottles as recognisable forms.

Picasso’s work constitutes a vast autobiography. He invented a new style every time he fell in love with a woman. The autobiographical nature of his work is reinforced by his commitment to dating his works, often to the day.

Picasso’s influence on art was and remains immense and widely acknowledged.

“To say that Pablo Picasso dominated Western art in the 20th century is, by now, the merest commonplace ... No painter or sculptor, not even Michelangelo, had been as famous as this in his own lifetime ... The Spaniard was the last great beneficiary of the belief that

the language of painting and sculpture really mattered to people other than devotees.” – Robert Hughes (19382012), art critic, producer, author of “The Fatal Shore” (1986).

Pablo Picasso died on April 8, 1973 in Mougins, France from pulmonary edema and heart failure, while he and his wife Jacqueline Roque entertained friends for dinner. He was interred at the Château of Vauvenarques near Aix-en-Provence, a property he had acquired in 1950 and in which he lived with Roque between 1959 and 1962.

Roque prevented his children with Françoise, Claude and Paloma, from attending the funeral. Devastated and lonely, Jacqueline Roque killed herself by gunshot in 1986 when she was 59 years old.

When Picasso died in 1973 many of his paintings were in his possession, as he had kept off the art market what he did not need to sell. He also had a

large collection of other famous artists, like Matisse, with whom he exchanged works. Since Picasso left no will, his death duties and estate taxes to the French state were paid in the form of his works and others from his collection. Most of these works form the core of the immense and representative collection of the Musée Picasso in Paris. In 2003, relatives of Picasso inaugurated a museum dedicated to him in Málaga, Spain, where he was born – the Museo Picasso.

As of 2015, Picasso has remained the top-ranked artist – based on sales of his works at auctions. More of his paintings have been stolen than any other artist.

Several paintings by Picasso rank among the most expensive in the world. Garçon à la Pipe (1905) sold for US $104 million at Sotheby’s on May 4, 2004. Dora Maar au Chat (1941) sold for US 95.2 million at Sotheby’s on May 3, 2006. On May 4, 2010, the Nude, Green Leaves and Bust (1932) of Marie-Thérèse Walter sold at Christie’s for US 106.5 million. On May 11, 2015, Women of Algiers (1955) set the record for the highest price ever paid for a painting when it sold for US $179.3 million at Christie’s in New York.

On June 21, 2016, Picasso’s Femme Assise (1909) sold for £43.2 million at Sotheby’s London. On May 17, 2017, Femme Assise, Robe bleu (1939) – a work stolen by Nazis – sold for $45 million. The painting has changed hands several times since then. In March 2018, Picasso’s Femme au Béret et à la Robe Quadrillée (1937), a portrait of Marie-Thérèse Walter, sold for £49.8 million at Sotheby’s in London.

Pablo Picasso par Christian Zervos, known by many as “The Zervos”, remains the most trusted reference to the works of Picasso. “The Zervos” is an extensive catalogue of Picasso’s paintings and drawings, presenting over 16,000 images in thirty-three volumes. Prepared by Cahiers d’Art founder Christian Zervos in direct collaboration with Picasso, “The Servos” was published between 1932 and 1978.

'Bad Boys for Life' debuts so good with box office top spot

T

bad boys for life | 124 minutes

he third edition of the “Bad Boys” franchise starts as it must do: With a gleaming Porsche swerving at impossible speeds through Miami traffic under the expert control of Will Smith, with Martin Lawrence growing very sick beside him.

The engine snarls, the car repeatedly fishtails and strains.

Smith looks over to his partner with alarm and points out that the interior of the sports car is hand-stitched leather.

Lawrence’s cheeks bulge; he’s about to hurl: “You better drink it,” the driver barks.

All is good. We’ve again got Smith’s cocksure Detective Mike Lowrey beside Lawrence’s more cautious Marcus Burnett. There’s the customary playful banter between opposites. We’ve got sunny, titillating Miami and we are inches from death but really never that close. We’re in our ‘90s comfort zone. You can almost hear it: “Bad boys, bad boys/Whatcha gonna do, whatcha gonna do/When they come for you?”

So it’s so disappointing that “Bad Boys for Life” soon swerves into weird neighbourhoods and gets bloated as it tries to get deep, trying to explore topics like religion, mortality, biological

determinism, individual legacy and aging. It’s oddly flat and unfunny and has strayed so far from its gritty roots that it might be called “Bad Boys for Life Insurance.”

Sure, you can’t stay still.

Smith and Lawrence are both past 50 and their characters can’t keep to the same formula of “muscle shirts and body counts,” as Burnett argues.

But do we really want Burnett to straight-faced tell a Buddhist parable about a horse and then ask Lowrey about how he can overcome his own trauma: “Where are you going, Mike?”

The first film in the franchise hit theatres 25 years ago, giving us foreign baddies with beepers, Tea Leoni in little skirts, many, many bricks of heroin and an exploding airplane hanger. Eight years later came “Bad Boys II,” a slicker flick with slow-mo sideways shooting, a feisty Gabrielle Union in a white suit, the annihilation of many cars and many, many ecstasy pills.

“Bad Boys for Life” doesn’t have drugs — if you don’t count Viagra jokes — but instead has a murder plot to assassinate everyone connected with an old drug case Lowrey worked on before he teamed up with Burnett.

Someone is out for revenge

WILL Smith and Martin Lawrence return as Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett. and they are exposing skeletons in Lowrey’s closet, uncovering a backstory inconsistent to the Lowrey we have come to know. We add cliches — a team of smart, young, sassy cops — on top of some twists worthy of Shakespeare.

Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah have taken over from Michael Bay in the director’s chair but the look of the film essentially mimics its predecessors, with saturated colours, quick cuts, muscular stunts and lots of pretty women. An understated Vanessa Hudgens plays a cool cop and Kate Del Castillo is on the opposite side in more than one sense, playing an absolutely unhinged cartel boss wife who uses witchcraft. Joe Pantoliano returns as the Pepto-swigging detectives’ boss and DJ Khaled has a small role as well as putting together the lively soundtrack.

There are sly references to the previous films — a private conversation between the detectives is accidentally broadcast as in the second film and rats make an encore performance in the new one — but the filmmakers have forgotten that what makes this

BRITISH born Latino actor Jacob Scipio plays the villain. franchise work: The interaction of Smith and Lawrence in stressed environments. So often in the new film they are separate, dealing with their own stuff. “Bad Boys” only works when the bickering cops are centre stage.

Age has taken its toll: Burnett is a grandfather now who needs glasses and is eyeing retirement, while Lowrey is unsettled, still a playboy but a wistful one who colours his

goatee black with hair dye.

(Yes, there are colonoscopy jokes in this film.) Lowrey is having second thoughts about one flame who got away: Paola Nunez, who plays a fellow cop. A crisis forces Burnett to make a vow to God. Hell is a topic discussed — “darkness that swallows you whole.” We are a long way from the time Burnett was shot in the keister by his partner.

The convoluted plot keeps finding false endings that just lead to bigger outlandish stunts — many, many helicopters and motorcycles — until it ends in a rundown palace in Mexico City with a fiery conclusion that goes to cartoonish, very Bay-ish lengths.

Smith and Lawrence are far from home, on foot and facing a military-style ambush. It is a franchise that has lost its way.

A potential sequel is hinted at during the end credits but it’s hard to believe a fourth episode could save the “Bad Boy” legacy. Still, as long as Smith and Lawrence are willing to pair up again, “whatcha gonna do when they come for you?”

Why are there seven days in a week?

Waiting for the weekend can often seem unbearable, a whole six days between Saturdays. Having seven days in a week has been the case for a very long time, and so people don’t often stop to ask why.

Most of our time reckoning is due to the movements of the planets, Moon and stars. Our day is equal to one full rotation of the Earth around its axis. Our year is a revolution of the Earth around the Sun, which takes 365 and ¼ days, which is why we add an extra day in February every four years, for a leap year.

But the week and the month are a bit trickier. The phases of the Moon do not exactly coincide with the solar calendar.

The Moon cycle is 27 days and seven hours long, and there are 13 phases of the Moon in each solar year.

Some of the earliest civilizations observed the cosmos and recorded the movements of planets, the Sun and Moon.

The Babylonians, who lived in modern-day Iraq, were astute observers and interpreters of the heavens, and it is largely thanks to them that our weeks are seven days long.

The reason they adopted the number seven was that they observed seven celestial bodies – the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter

and Saturn. So, that number held particular significance to them.

Other civilizations chose other numbers – like the Egyptians, whose week was 10 days long; or the Romans, whose week lasted eight.

The Babylonians divided their lunar months into seven-day weeks, with the final day of the week holding particular religious significance. The 28-day month, or a complete cycle of the Moon, is a bit too large a period of time to manage effectively, and so the Babylonians divided their months into four equal parts of seven.

The number seven is not especially well-suited to coincide with the solar year, or even the months, so it did create a few inconsistencies.

However, the Babylonians were such a dominant culture in the Near East, especially in the sixth and seventh centuries B.C., that this, and many of their other notions of time – such as a 60-minute hour – persisted.

The seven-day week spread throughout the Near East.

It was adopted by the Jews, who had been captives of the Babylonians at the height of that civilization’s power. Other cultures in the surrounding areas got on board with the seven-day week, including the Persian empire and the Greeks.

Centuries later, when Alexander the Great began to spread Greek culture throughout the Near East as far as India, the concept of the seven-day week spread as well. Scholars think that perhaps India later introduced the seven-day week to China.

Finally, once the Romans began to conquer the territory influenced by Alexander the Great, they too eventually

shifted to the seven-day week.

It was Emperor Constantine who decreed that the sevenday week was the official Roman week and made Sunday a public holiday in AD 321.

The weekend was not adopted until modern times in the 20th century. Although there have been some recent attempts to change the sevenday week, it has been around for so long that it seems like it is here to stay.

Nassau: 1940s vs the 2010s Remembering Bay Street as the beating heart of the city

I

grew up in a very different Bahamas. It was as if New Providence was bigger and Nassau was smaller.

Today, in the mind of the average person, Bahamian or expatriate, Nassau is the name of the whole island, so that is how I am writing this article.

Before I was born, almost everything that happened took place on Bay Street, where the “big” shops were.

Bakeries, banks, cinemas, dry goods, fish, fruit, furniture, gas stations, groceries, hardware, hotels, meat, newspaper publishers, pharmacies, photographers, restaurants, schools, tobacco – all of these, and more, were available on Bay Street, or just off Bay Street, on one of the side streets. Bahamians needed to go to Bay Street to shop and many shopkeepers lived upstairs over their shops. Others lived within walking distance. People knew one another.

As the population increased, bigger shops were needed. People began moving out of the downtown area, the preferred destination being the Eastern Road.

Shops grew in size and merchandise carried. Specialty stores included antiques, china, furs, hats, expensive jewellery and watches, ladies fashion. Of course, there were overlaps and many items could be bought from more than one merchant. But generally speaking, it was on Bay Street.

Home Furniture Company, the first store in the Bahamas to have a glass window, was a few doors east of East Street

(the original eastern boundary of the City of Nassau). Moseley’s Book Store was on Bank Lane (which did not, and does not connect to Shirley Street).

Apart from books, magazines, et cetera., Moseley’s windows displayed exciting toys. Next door was Johnson’s Ice Cream Parlour.

The Park Store was on the corner of Bay and Parliament Streets, and kids, on their walks home from school, would take long pauses to look at the myriad things on display. Nearby was Dr Cleary’s practice. His motto was “To see clearly, see Cleary”. He lived towards the southern end of Village Road.

Then there was Thompson’s Pharmacy. A few doors

away, to the west, was Cole’s Pharmacy. The two businesses merged into Cole-Thompson Pharmacies, which is still in business at the very same spot.

On the south-eastern corner of Bay and Charlotte was the Grand Central Restaurant, the first eatery to be air-conditioned.

On Charlotte Street, between Bay and Shirley, was Victoria Hall, the first site of Queen’s College. Opposite QC was the printing plant of the Nassau Guardian. The Tribune was called the Nassau Daily Tribune. It was printed near Shirley and Deveaux, more or less where it is now.

On the north-western corner of Bay and Charlotte stood the Central Garage,

with gasoline pumps in front, on the Bay Street sidewalk.

Carl Brice sold out to the Rootes Group and the building became the showroom for several English cars built by Rootes.

Anyone who had business with a bank was obliged to go to Bay Street, because the Royal Bank of Canada was, for many years, the only bank in the entire Bahamas. After World War II, Nassau got its second bank – Barclay’s Bank DCO – between Charlotte and Frederick. It took years before banks opened branches in Nassau and, much later, in some Out Islands.

Woodes Rogers Walk did not exist. From Navy Lion Road (next to the British

Colonial Hotel) to Union Street (now named Elizabeth Avenue) most streets ended in a separate dock.

Only in a few places could a dray, a horse carriage and, later a motor car, drive along a small length of waterfront.

So many businesses have changed owners, gone out of business or moved to various suburbs, but names like General Hardware (became Bernard’s), John S George & Co Ltd, The Men’s Shop, The Nassau Shop, Pipe of Peace, Solomon’s Mines, Black’s Candy Kitchen, and nearby Arthur Lunn on the southern corner of Market and King, a leading tailor, are remembered.

If you would like to see a living example of old Bay Street, go shopping at A Baker’s store, on the south-east corner Bay and Frederick.

The risk, in offering lists like this, is that I have left out a lot of people and businesses, and am sure to offend their feelings, for which I apologise. If I were in Nassau, with access to my files, I’m sure I could do a better job. Sorry!

Here in Orlando, of the many people who have visited Nassau by cruise ship, only one confessed to having taken a tour of the island. After a day on Pirates’ Beach, they got back onto their ship, thinking they had seen the Bahamas.

Whose walk is it anyway?

K, Rover, let’s get your leash; let’s go for a walk...or “walkies”.

Such canine excitement – “Oh good, did she say walkies? Find my leash, find it, find it, find it NOW!” This is the usual reaction of the average dog if the word “walk” is introduced. Ears go up, neck stiffens, tail wags faster before the spinning in circles and uncontrollable barking starts.

What does this actually mean? Simple, this means they love their walk. Which in itself is marvellous news, but whose walk is it actually?

I have spent three weeks in some of the most delightful residential areas of Orlando and Winter Park since New Year’s Eve because my husband was very seriously ill (better now, thank you) where everybody walks their dog and absolutely no strays are to be seen.

As I I watch these dogs being walked the same scenario unfolds. So many dogs are being dragged away from what they are sniffing, or are squatting or lifting a leg when the owner pulls the leash without checking on the dog and the poor pups are caught mid-stream, so to speak. Think about this! Really think about if this the correct behaviour

I am terribly disappointed in humans. Would they want this treatment?

Smells and sniffs are very important for dogs. It gives them immeasurable pleasure to sniff a single leaf for minutes, identifying what has passed by and how. It is like a history book with scores of information for your dog.

Dogs have a remarkable ability to recognise and remember scents and smells, far better than any person.

In, fact dogs have 40 times the smell-processing ability of humans, which is why they love to sniff things so very carefully.

It is obvious how reliable a dog’s sense of smell is when you see how many different jobs dogs have that involve their amazing smell capacities.

In the case of earthquakes and avalanches, who is called out to help find survivors? The rescue dogs! After a disaster, who helps find the dead?

Again, dogs.

It is interesting to note that dogs get depressed if they only find dead bodies and every so often their handlers have to “bury” a live person for them to find or they become despondent. That particular detail really shows you the nice and loving nature of the dog.

When you go through customs in some countries there are frequently dogs checking the baggage. My heart melts when I see the sweet little beagles they use in the States, dressed in their little green coats.

Dogs can find explosives before they have been detonated. Before many large political rallies or a visit from the Queen, the room will be checked out by the bomb dogs. Why? Because their noses are just that fantastic.

I always tell people who have senior dogs that just taking them somewhere there are new smells would be a great outing and give them lots of pleasure. My Chief, who is now 13 and a half years old, and his good friend Buddy at 12 and a half, love going out the front gate where lots of people pass by daily and other dogs go walking. If they want to spend five minutes sniffing a fallen coconut then, as far as I am concerned, that is their prerogative.

If you take your dog out for a walk then you must allow him the time to enjoy his walk.

The next time you pick up the leash decide ahead of time whose walk is it anyway. Are you tagging along with him or is he tagging along with you?

When you yank your dog away without consideration, ask yourself how would you feel if you were window-shopping on Fifth Avenue in New York City and had stopped in front of an appealing store and somebody dragged you away before you could get a good look.

The rum diaries The Caribbean Journal returned to Nassau this week to visit Graycliff and sample some local rums, including those produced by the John Watling’s distillery.

The publication has, as part of it’s special ‘Rum Journal’ feature, been profiling destinations of interest to rum connoisseurs for several years now.

John Watling’s is currently vying for the title of USA Today’s Best Caribbean Distillery 2020. It is currently nominated among the top 10 and people can vote online for the local distillery until Monday, February 3 at noon ET.
