Ted Sweeting “The Commonwealth of the Bahamas has lost one of its Finest MORTICIAN!” Ted Sweeting was born on December 3, 1945 to the Late Standford and Mary Lee Sweeting on the historical Meeting Street in the Grant’s Town Community. He attended the St. Mary’s Day School, Quarry Mission School and Western Junior and Senior Schools. Upon completion of School and following his apprenticeship with the Late Marcus Bethel, Ted enrolled in Miami Dade College and was the first Bahamian to Study Mortuary Science at Miami Dade College and forming for the College the Mu Sigma Tau Fraternity. While studying in Miami, he did his internship at Bain’s Funeral Home under the tutelage of the Late Victor J. Bain a then prominent Mortician in South Florida and a descendant of the Bahamas. In 1966, Ted graduated from Mortuary Science School and returned to the Bahamas with innovative ideas for modernizing the Funeral Service Profession. Ted subsequently founded Sweeting’s Colonial Mortuary along with his wife Myrtle at his side. As a team they both became a force to reckon with and served numerous Families throughout the Bahamas. His creative skills and artistic abilities caused him to be the first Mortician in the Bahamas to repose for the first time a deceased sitting in a chair that went viral. In the year 2009 Ted was bestowed along with Mr. James C. Boyd and his classmate Mr. Fred Hunter with an Honorary Doctorate Degree for their innovative service as Funeral Practitioners. Ted was the eldest Mortician in the Bahamas that was still actively working in the Industry along with his sons. Ted was very involved in Church, Civics and Culture! An Avid Member of St. Agnes Anglican Church and was an active member of the Vestry and Altar Guild while serving under the Late Archdeacon William Thompson. In Civics, He was a member of Columbus Lodge No.16, Prince Hall Affiliation and served will fervency and zeal thus being elevated to Past Master and Past Grand Master respectively.

Ted will always be remembered for marshalling all Masonic Parades as he served as Grand Marshall of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas and also a member of I.B.P.O.E of the World and a Member of the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows, Saint Bartholomew Lodge No. 1778, up to the time of his demise. In Culture, he began his Junkanoo Career at the age of five years old as member of the Western Hilltoppers, later moving on to a Group formed by the Acolyte Boys of St. Mary’s The Virgin Anglican Parish. Despite being a Westerner, Ted followed some of his friends and became a Member of the Valley Boys. When the Late Winston ‘Gus” Cooper went off to University, Ted along with the Late Brian Gibson and others formed the Vikings Junkanoo Group. Ted was known for his drum making skills and was credited for making the biggest drum out of Salt Beef Barrel. For his contribution to Junkanoo and the Valley Boys, Ted was made a Member of the “Junkanoo Legends Circle”. Ted Sweeting’s legacy will forever live on in the hearts and minds of all those Families that he has served over the years and the contribution that he made to Church, Civics and Culture. His shoes will be most difficult to fill within the Funeral Industry in the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. To Robin, Charmaine, Dominic and Damien your father’s legacy will live on. On Behalf of the President, Officers and Members of the Bahamas Funeral Directors Association and other Morticians around the globe we extend our heartfelt condolences to the entire Sweeting Family. May his soul Rest in Peace and Rise in Glory. “Farewell Colleague we will miss very much, you will forever live in our hearts as a fountain of friendship!”

NO MORE CRUTCHING I

HATE crutches! They’re ungainly, cumbersome and they chafe under the arm, if you’re on them too long! We are all familiar with crutches. From the most banal to the more trendy, really, crutches do one thing: they support someone with an injury or disability. Prolonged use of crutches can lead to myriad disadvantages ranging from mere irritation to bone damage to arterial flow damage and atrophy–a decline in the effectiveness of muscles due to lack of use or neglect. Now, let’s think about this for a second–although crutches provide relief temporarily, they’re really not meant for prolonged use. At some point the injury heals and the victim is mobile and can independently operate again. Figuratively, a crutch is someone you depend on a bit too much in asperity. Again, it’s great to have people we can call on in need, but this too should be something temporary. At some point we ought to be able to tighten our own boot straps and plod ahead self-sufficiently. Sigh...sadly, it’s not like that for many relationships –from the familial to the spiritual to the romantic. Many of us either stand on our “crutches” too long, until we “wear out our welcome” (thanks mama); or, we become a crutch to others and become weary in well-doing. Exactly how do we get into predicaments like these – for me it was an overwhelming sense of responsibility borne out of a spirit of rejection. Here was my reasoning: I want people to like

I expended myself and my resources to no end, all in an effort to make sure I was loved.

me therefore I’ll be there for everyone. I’ll be taxi-driver, money-lender, money-giver. I expended myself and my resources to no end, all in an effort to make sure I was loved. All the while, my ideas, my feelings, my thoughts were gravely trampled underfoot, and kept for those moments when I got precious reprieve from being “all things to all men”. The one thing I won’t insinuate is that any missed opportunity on my part is the fault of someone else. If there is one thing I have learned about crutches, it’s that we choose to pick them up and use

them. Also, it is up to us when we rest them down. But I will admit that I got so busy with the ideal of helping everyone else that I left myself out of the equation. I put dreams on hold, desires went unfulfilled, hopes died a slow death as I lifted, supported and aided others along the way. If that is you then I do have some good news! Help has come! From my experience I will give you one word of advice: STOP! Okay, for you theologians out there, I can hear you saying, “Well, where’s the scripture to back this up? Where is the

Bible reference that stops this from being some teaching on selfish ambition and leaving others behind while your soar to unknown heights?” I’ll be honest, I have none. But I do know the Bible talks about wisdom and discernment. Here’s a scripture for you: Matthew 10:16 “I am sending you out like sheep surrounded by wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. In areas of sharing, giving, in life in general, Christians, we all, must learn that there must a cutoff point where we decide that further investment – emotional, monetary, relational – is no longer beneficial and can do more harm than good, to all parties involved. How do you know that there is any “crutching” going on? Here are two signs: a. If major guilt is being dumped from either party for not being there b. If the connection is undergirded with insecurity, resentment or doubt of any kind I’ve found out that being a Christian does not equate to being someone’s doormat, or requiring that sacrifice from anyone else. As saved as we are, or perhaps not, there are levels of personal responsibility allotted to each of us and it becomes our own obligation to carry and care for ourselves sand our concerns at some point. There comes a time when handling your own business becomes more than a suggestion, but matter of survival and success. God Bless You This Week!

SHAWNDRAY SAUNDERS

FAITH FINDS A WAY BY ALESHA CADET | TRIBUNE FEATURES WRITER ACADET@TRIBUNEMEDIA.NET IN HER personal walk with entrepreneurship, Bahamian woman Shawndray Saunders has learned no business could survive or thrive during an economic crisis, recession, or pandemic without prayer, faith and building healthy personal relationships with customers through the best customer service one can offer. “In 2018, I left my full-time job and faith walked into entrepreneurship which means that I was broke but I had a wealthy mindset. After travelling that year to grow in knowledge, I attended bootcamps and learned from business pros and online coaching,” said Ms Saunders. Ms Saunders later launched what she now calls Praying Bosses Kingdomain - a space for entrepreneurs to dominate in their respective industries and own everything that God has given mankind to have. “It is a community for faith-based women from any ethnic backgrounds to learn, grow and add value to their

life and business through resources and knowledge that can make money and build generational wealth through ownership. Own their lives, businesses, brands, industries and wealth,” said Ms Saunders. Under the Praying Bosses brand, Ms Saunders has hosted a number of social media, business start up and marketing bootcamp sessions to assist others seeking entrepreneurship. “My favourite topics are 7 ways to market your online business; building a brand that you will love; and how to start a successful online business. My participant reviews says it (Praying Bosses Bootcamp) is informative, helpful and valuable. They are now ready to share and help other businesses that they are apart of,” said Ms Saunders. Ms Saunders said with days like this where Kamala Harris has taken office as the new Vice President of the United States of America - there are also Bahamian women who are rising up to break barriers for other women.

Facing the New Year with confidence BY THE REV DR J EMMETTE WEIR

“BUT this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before.” Do you know why the first month of the year is known as January? If you don’t, I am sure you would like to. And even if you do, it would be refreshing and relevant for you to reflect on its profound significance at this time. Now, our English word “January”, like so many others, came to us via the Latin word “Janus”. This should not be surprising as for my esteemed colleague in Ministry, the late Rev Prosper Burrows, himself a competent Latin scholar, delighted to state that “Those who know Latin, don’t need a dictionary!” So, who was Janus? Well, he was one of the idol gods of the pagan religion of the ancient Romans. They named the first month of the year after him. You see, what was peculiar about Janus was he had two heads. Yes, “two heads!” One head was portrayed as looking backwards at the past year. The other head was presented as looking forward to the year ahead.

Now, there is much food for thought here! For it is very wise for us all, during the first month, first to look back on the past year, and then to turn our attention to the challenges of the New Year! Now, there can be no doubt that, from a Christian perspective, the main reason for looking back to the past is thanksgiving. Thanksgiving to Almighty God for sparing our life to see the dawn of a New Year. This is especially relevant to us as we begin the year 2021. For the past year has proven to be a very hard one for virtually all of humankind. Yes, dealing with the ravages of Hurricane Dorian, the great amount of suffering and unemployment brought on by COVID 19 and most of all the passing of so many prominent members of community have combined to make a year of catastrophes troubling those of us who, by the grace of God, have survived the vicissitudes of the past year can only testify that God has been good to us. Truly we can sing: Now thank we all our God, with hearts and hands and voices

CHURCH CELEBRATES PASTORAL ANNIVERSARY

Rev Stephen Smith celebrates sixth pastoral anniversary BY JEFFARAH GIBSON | TRIBUNE FEATURES WRITER | JGIBSON@TRIBUNEMEDIA.NET

I

T has not been an easy road, but the Rev Stephen Smith has been a “remarkable shepherd” to his flock at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Exuma for the past six years, according to church members. His leadership was celebrated this past Sunday during a special event to mark his pastoral anniversary and to give thanks for his dedicated, faithful and consistent service. Rev Smith began his pastoral journey by succeeding the late Rev Dr Irvin Clarke Sr. He remains determined to reach the masses with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Deacon Urban Smith, brother of the pastor, gave an address under the theme “The Lord Is Our Help”. He spoke of the goodness of God and how Rev Smith had been faithful in leading the church over the past six years. “We, the Ebenezer Family, declare that we will stand with you, Pastor Smith, through thick and thin. As Samuel, we will strive to keep our hearts in the right place, fixed on God and on the things of God. We will lay aside every weight that beset us and run the race with patience,” he said. Deacon Smith encouraged the pastor to remember God has called him for

this appointed time. “Write the vision and make it plain. God will make the crooked path straight and the rough places smooth. God will bless you even in the fire. God moves in unique ways. This year will be the year of manifestation. We must continue to trust the process and watch God restore, heal and manifest. Deacon Urban Smith also encouraged the congregation that we will be a church that support our Pastor. Rev Smith was surrounded with much love and support by his family, friends and loved ones who travelled from Nassau to be with him during this occasion. Rev Smith received gifts baskets and a monetary gift from his congregants. In an emotional response, Rev Smith expressed his appreciation to his family, his wife Krivoy, his children Kazmyn and Stephon and his mother, Deaconess Elsiemae Smith, for her prayers. He also thanked Rev Cedric Smith for his encouragement along the journey. Rev Smith spoke of the importance of spending time in prayer to carry out the work of the Lord and the ministry of the church in Exuma.

that their upbringing was strongly imbued with God as a focal point of the family unit. She was a firm believer that if she established a foundation concerning God in her children’s lives, her work as a parent for the most part, was completed, for if they strayed, the foundation existed to assist their return to the straight and narrow. This is an attestation to her faith and attributed to Proverbs 22:6 (ESV;NIV) - “Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old he will not depart from it”. Her love for her children was infinite and without conditions. She was of the view that no dream was too big or too small by inspiring, encouraging and providing pearls of wisdom that whatever their vision, it was attainable and would be supported by her.

“Here’s to a Lady Worthy of Praise” was held on Tuesday, January 19th, 2021. Canon Warren Rolle was the Officiant. Interment was at Lakeview Memorial Gardens, John F. Kennedy Drive, Gladstone Road. Melvina Bonamy née Miller, in her quiet and unassuming style, peacefully exited this world on January 4th, bidding farewell to her temporary resting place, and graciously entered into her Heavenly Home. The sixth child of the late Henry and Winnifred Miller, Melvina was born in Arthur’s Town, Cat Island. Her life’s journey would propel her into a career in Education, and would have her dedicate over thirty years to a profession she truly enjoyed and loved. Similarly, she would be guided and dedicated to the man who would become her husband, the late Melvin Alfred Bonamy, Sr. The two were truly destined to unite - their names attest to this. The couple embarked on a life rich with love and appreciation for each other. Their union was a planned life. A delightfully engaging and gracious lady, Melvina took nothing for granted, being mindful that all things come from God. She sought diligently His direction in all her decisions. When life’s challenges arose she could be seen reading her Bible or praying. She did not allow anything to come between her and her God. This was evidenced by her profound statement before her demise, “I will indeed wear a golden crown because my Jesus is alive forevermore”. Mellie, as she was affectionately called, lived a simple and unfettered life, always thankful for each day she was given. So much so, that her last words written on her note pad reads: “Thank You Lord for Your blessings on me”. Our Matriarch has gone onto her Heavenly Reward. We are so proud to call her Our Mummy. We will miss her presence but, we will Celebrate her life, cherishing all the beautiful memories we have created. We are truly blessed. And on that glad reunion day as the hymn proclaims: “Oh, what singing, Oh, what shouting on that happy morning when we all shall rise . . .” we look forward to seeing her again. She has only gone on before us. MELVINA was predeceased by the love of her life, Melvin Alfred Bonamy, Sr. & her baby Inga Bonamy-Kemp.
