Twin chefs launch foundation to foster culinary talents in students

A

n apprenticeship programme designed to help aspiring young chefs achieve their goals was recently launched by twins Rico and Ricah Neely. Although they are just fresh out of high school themselves, they know that there are limited opportunities available for students, and they wanted to create more in a field for which they are passionate about.

Rico is already an award-winning chef studying in New York City, and Ricah is at the University of the Bahamas pursuing a marketing degree while practicing in the field. Together, they came up with the Queen Esther foundation, named after their late grandmother, well-known Elisabeth Estates community leader Esther Neely-Brown.

In December, seven young chefs met to be a part of the Queen Esther Foundation’s first ever apprenticeship programme in conjunction with Cooking with Nuncy. The Rico and Ricah Neely, Cooking with Nuncy summer camp was held last August for two weeks. During the summer camp, the junior chefs had the opportunity to cook alongside and learn from some of the nation’s best, including Cacique Award winners and national junior team members.

At the end of the two weeks, students were able to show off all the skills they learned in a Cooking with Nuncy cook-off. One of the judges, Chef Kiesha Bonimy, was especially impressed by “the calibre of skill and workmanship of each student.”

“If I didn’t know any better, I’d think seasoned professional culinarians made some of these dishes,” she said.

choice by Chef Rico and other leading chefs in the Bahamas.

However, after hosting the classes, Rico and Ricah both realised that the annual sessions wouldn’t be enough to hone the skills of those students determined to become professional chefs.

For some of the students, those classes were a means of recreation, while for others it was the only real opportunity they had to connect and cook with actual chefs. For the latter, it was more than just a few classes; it was a step towards their future. After acknowledging this, the twins decided to raise the bar by starting a culinary apprentice programme aimed at seventh to 12th grade students who are seeking culinary mentorship and coaching.

The top winners from the Cooking with Nuncy summer camp cook-off were Keanna Brown, Muricka Davis, Matthew Clarke, Brittany Butterfield,

Xinaye Barr, Starr Jones, and Krystopher Clarke.

Over the course of three days last month, these seven junior chefs were given a sneak peek of what to expect moving forward as a team through an informational session/ video and photo shoot, as well as a scholarship session during the first day. On the second day, they volunteered at the Elizabeth Estates Children’s Home, teaching them to decorate Christmas treats. On the final of the three days, they were able to reflect on the programme and express what they hoped to see in 2019.

The Queen Esther Foundation hopes to help these junior chefs build upon their skills as they prepare for the 2019 Caribbean Junior Duelling Challenge in Barbados. The foundation will also assist the youngsters in creating a business of their choice, walking them through making a business plan and

following through with it. The foundation will also help them with applying for scholarships to attend colleges and universities after high school, while gaining exposure on national and regional platforms at the same time.

In the near future, this team will be hosting fundraisers, and the foundation urges the public to come out and support them as all the proceeds go towards travel arraignments, ingredients and uniforms for the young chefs.

“By investing into to the Queen Esther culinary apprentice programme you will enable us to accomplish our goal of helping and teaching more young people the fundamentals and soft skills of the culinary arts and their (importance) to our number one industry – skills that are needed in the fast-paced competitive environment of the Bahamas,” said Rico.

Q: Weekend away, where would you go?

“For a weekend away I would travel to a beach house on any one of the family islands with a spectacular view.

Some friends and I stayed in one in Eleuthera before and it was such an amazing weekend, very peaceful and beautiful, and the scenery was breathtaking. So I’ve promised myself whenever I get a chance to

go and stay at one on each Family Island for a relaxing weekend and to explore my Bahamian roots.”

Now, this young Bahamian artist tells Cara Hunt how she has been recognised for reaching a major milestone on the world’s largest music-streaming service.

he showbiz bug bit Pascalli Dillett at the tender age of three when she was cast to be in a commercial for KFC as well as an advertisement campaign for a Bahamian store The Island Shop.

She may have been young, but from then on she fully embraced the role of a performer. And her passion has taken the singer all over the world and to heights many artists can only dream of achieving.

Pascalli was raised in both Switzerland and the Bahamas and is a singer, songwriter, producer, and co-founder and CEO of Mogul Movements Worldwide, a writing and production company that she owns with international dancehall icon Red Rat who is known for his hit songs “Tight Up Skirt” and “Shelley Ann”.

Last month, Pascalli received a special plaque for attaining more than 20 million streams and counting on the digital music service Spotify.

The award was for a song she cowrote for Red Rat called “Higher”.

This makes her the first Bahamian woman, and Turks and Caicos Island belonger, to receive this honour.

“I still can’t believe it. I really wasn’t expecting to receive this. The path I chose wasn’t an easy road at all, but I committed and stuck to it.

I’m grateful as it proves that hard work does pay off,” she told Tribune Weekend.

Pascalli has spent her entire life preparing for a career in entertainment.

She began ballet at the age of four and later acquired a liking for jazz and hip hop dance as well.

While in college, she appeared in several music videos for big-name artists such as Neyo (“When You’re Mad”), Lil Wayne (”Make It Rain”), Damian Marley (”Traffic Jam”) and Aaron Carter (”Saturday Night”), the latter of which aired on the Disney Channel.

It was 2010 that she decided that she would venture into singing and songwriting. She did this with the help of Jamaican dancehall reggae star Red Rat. He recognised her talent as a pop singer and songwriter.

They recorded her very first single, “Me and U” featuring Red Rat. It was produced by Grammy Award winner Buddha (who also produced “Higher”).

In March of 2010, Pascalli gave an impromptu performance at the Power 96 stage for Calle Ocho festival as part of Carnaval Miami, and she has since travelled and performed throughout Europe, Africa, North and South America, and of course the Caribbean Islands.

In 2012, she expanded her horizons yet again, this time venturing into television production with a one-hour ‘Cross Caribbean’ countdown’ special for MTV Tempo. The show was a success and was one of the most watched Cross Caribbean countdowns to date.

Pascalli’s second single “HAUTE”, featuring Red Rat and Toledo, also rose quickly on the charts.

In 2017, Pascalli wrote “Never Give Up Zimbabwe” after she saw the political turmoil the Southeastern African country was going through at the time. Zimbabweans, the singer said, used the song as a source of inspiration and clung on to it during their march through the streets of capital city of Harare.

“I never thought that the song would have been such a big deal,” she said. My heart bled for Zimbabweans.

‘Never Give Up’ was, in a sense, a letter to the people, wanting to give them hope and to President (Robert) Mugabe, hoping that he would hear the cry of his people,” Pascalli explained.

Later that same year, Pascalli was one of the writers on Jori Boy’s hit single “Para Mi”, also featuring Red Rat. Less than 24 hours after it’s release the song had already received over 1.5 million views on YouTube.

In recent times, she has been working with the king of dancehall himself, Beenie Man, on a new song called “P Say Hellooo”, as well as a soca-dancehall song called “Bakon Pan It” with Trinidadian “Hello” hitmaker Kes. Both tracks are set to be released in 2019.

“I really hope that I’ll have the opportunity to work on some projects in the Bahamas and possibly shoot one of my new videos there. I have always mentioned the Bahamas in interviews no matter where I’ve been in the world, and I would love to use my platform to continue to promote the country,” she said.

“It has been an amazing journey. The realisation that my dreams are coming true is a reassurance that the career I have chosen is right for me and that I am most definitely on the right path. My focus is not so much about making a big name for myself or being famous. Although fame comes along with what I am doing, it is secondary. My primary priority is to ensure

Looking towards the future, Pascalli has been in the studio, working hard to complete her debut EP and has had the privilege to work with numerous Grammy Award-winning and nominated producers.

However, there are a few more stars she’d love to collaborate with.

“I have been fortunate enough to work with many of my childhood idols already, but I would love to vocally collaborate with Beyonce, Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, Ozuna, Sean Paul and Drake,” she said.

She says that giving 100 per cent is all that she knows and her objective is to continue to work hard and to produce music and television projects that people can relate to globally, as well as to continue to expand her brand in a professional environment.

“I want my messages to the world to be authentic, and I want my fans to be able to connect with me from my heart to theirs,” she said.

She also offers this advice to other young people hoping to crack the music industry: “Be passionate about whatever it is that you are doing and work hard to excel. It is important to stay focused and to give it your all in order to accomplish your goal. So as long as you know that you have truly given your 100 percent, you have succeeded.”

Kishan Munroe returns with next piece in ‘Postcolonial’ series

n his latest painting, “Attempts to Emancipate a Man Already Freed”, acclaimed artist Kishan Munroe continues his exploration of the effects of colonialism on a modern Bahamas.

The painting is part of an ongoing social commentary series called “Power: Decolonizing the Postcolonial” which has been been a central theme in much of his recent works.

Kishan recently presented the painting to the public on the occasion of the country’s sixth annual celebration of Majority Rule Day, observed each January 10.

“In this series I confront a number of sociopolitical issues, specifically as it relates to Caribbean nations after independence,” he explained to Tribune Weekend.

The painting features a man in the middle of an ocean. In one hand he is grasping a mace which is the symbol of the royal authority of Elizabeth II, the Queen of the Bahamas. As he struggles to stay afloat, two flamingos attempt to pull him up and away from the mace and perils of the sea to safety. However; the man refuses to let go; he refuses to release himself.

Kishan explained that the mace is a symbol of the vestiges of colonialism still present in the country today, which is in its own way drowning its people, while the flamingo, the national bird of the Bahamas is used as a symbol of upliftment, independence and redefined Bahamian identity.

Even the colour palette he uses is filled with symbolism.

“The coloration was inspired by my flamingo series,” he said. (In 2013, Kishan produced a series of paintings depicting the sinking of the HMBS Flamingo in 1980, which resulted in the deaths of four marine officers entitled “Swan Song of the Flamingo”).

“The blues, reds and pinks are some of the last vestiges of colonialism present within the Bahamas and you can still see that displayed in the colour palette of some of our government buildings.

“We still have those ties to the past,” he explained. “To be independent, we need to redefine ourselves and our geographical, social and global position.”

Kishan noted that he finds it extremely important to use his art platform to raise social consciousness.

“If you look back through history, visual art is one of the earliest forms of communication. If you look as far back as cave paintings, you would see pictures as opposed to script. When you look at the early days of the church, much of the populace could not read and so art was used, in the paintings and stained glassed windows, to more effectively communicate biblical messages and create a aura of greater spirituality,” he said.

“And so what I am doing is something that has been done from time immemorial. We learn from what we see...a picture is worth a thousand words.”

He added that as he has grown, his work has become less about himself and more about raising the collective conscious.

Kishan recently came back from Russia where he engaged in anthropological investigations into the role Soviet intervention played in influencing Western sociopolitical issues. He is now prepares for another avant-garde expedition entitled “Drifter In Residence” where he plans to drift into the Atlantic on a self-constructed raft.

A dab hand at painting

sing her interest in the arts and the inspiration she got from TV and YouTube, Alayna Ledard set out to create her own business of hand-painted accessories.

Today, she paints everything from handbags, to shoes, jeans, canvas, and even belly masks fro mommies-to-be.

Although she underestimated her talent back in her high school days, Alayna said she always loved art class.

But it was only after graduating that she began indulging her creative side a bit more. She turned to HGTV many days, tuning into The Carol Duvall Craft Show, where she fell even further in love with art and later got involved in other creative forms.

“In 2014, I began a handbag making course at Lemongrass Studio with Teri Monique. I later started painting and experimenting with art and handbag tutorials on YouTube channels which allowed me to think differently. I enjoy the freedom and unlimited ideas that are available to me. I can attempt and do anything I put my mind and my hands to,” Alayna told Tribune Weekend.

This love grew into a business venture: Sugar Plum Studio is a creative home décor company offering art on canvas, wood, as well as tiles. There are also one-of-a-kind hand-painted bags, clothing, shoes, jewellery, wind chimes, sunglass cases and many more items added daily or upon request.

The Sugar Plum Studio is a homebased business here in Nassau that is very active in pop-up events, festivals, fairs and private showings. “ My first pop-up was at the Ardastra Gardens and then Tambearly School, for which I will always be grateful. The Almighty God who loads me up with continuous ideas, talents and gifts, is my biggest influence in all of this. He promised that my gifts would make room for me and bring me before kings, and I believe Him,” said Alayna.

One of the more unusual items she makes are belly masks for pregnant women. She recently made one for a couple expecting their first child.

From hand-painted jeans and tiles, to one-of-a-kind handbags, Alayna Ledard does it all.

“They were young and had just relocated to Nassau from France due to the demands of the husband’s job.

It was their first pregnancy and I was honoured to create a mould of the mother-to-be’s belly with her husband’s hands placed on either side. They were so excited and pleased that the motherto-be was almost in tears (seeing) the mould,” said Alayna.

Like most small business owners, Alayna’s goal is to have her company one day recognised by a wider market.

She is also looking forward to having her work in major departments stores.

pen

T

he topic of calligraphy kept popping up all over her social media feed to the point where Leanne Key felt she could not escape it.

So instead of trying to run from it, she embraced it.

“It seemed like every quote I saw on social media was created with some inspiration from calligraphy and I was compelled to try my hand at recreating artwork from Instagram,” she told Tribune Weekend.

Practice turned into perfection, and Leanne ended up creating her own style and publishing her own calligraphy art on Instagram. Her Instagram page gained traction and people started requesting hand-lettered pieces for almost every special occasion imaginable.

Since then, her business, The Nassau Script Company, has been grown to offer a full range of hand-lettering and modern calligraphy options. From envelopes to wood or even glass, customers can request hand-lettered messages on just about any surface.

With modern calligraphy trending worldwide, being utilised for unique and quirky signs for everything from restaurants to shops, at wedding and other events, Leanne said she had decided to host a special class to teach people the basics of brush calligraphy, so they can practice hand-lettering themselves.

One of the great things about this class, she noted, is that no prior experience or skill is needed. It will be held February 16, from at 10am to 3pm at the Queen’s College Further Education Centre.

“Experience and so-called good penmanship is not required,” said Leanne. The class is for anyone interested in learning a new skill or looking for a new hobby.

“When I discover things that make me happy or have changed my life for the better, I enjoy sharing it with others. I love calligraphy and lettering.

It really is my passion and I would like to share that passion with people.”

Leanne said people are especially inquisitive about her hand-lettering whenever she is creating work in a public space or delivering a finished project to someone.

“I’m usually questioned by people who express that they could never do what I do because their handwriting sucks. The truth of the matter is you do

not need good handwriting to be a great calligrapher. The two are not synonymous. I want to inspire people to embrace the learning process, acquire new skills, boost their confidence and possibly create another stream of incomes,” she said.

The class will break down the basics of brush calligraphy, making it easy for participants to learn the technique. The class will cover guidelines, strokes, practice strokes, pen pressure, and how to create a style.

By the end of the class, said Leanne, participants will be able to create their very own brush-lettered piece.

All materials needed to practice are included in the class.

Leanne cautioned that this class will not turn participants into skilled calligraphers overnight. But once the basic techniques acquired during this lesson are consistently practiced, she said the participants’ penmanship can transform significantly.

“The process of learning a new skill or acquiring a new hobby is a great experience for anyone. It engages the mind and getting better at a skill boosts confidence and improves your overall well-being.

Hand-lettering and modern calligraphy is not only beneficial in that you can improve your handwriting, personalise gifts and home décor items, but many of us hand-letterers agree that is an incredible way to manage stress. Slowing down to create art, one stroke at a time, relaxes the body and the mind,” she said.

Light a candle and escape

C

andles were once only used as a source of light. But today they have evolved to include soothing and healing properties. Aroma candles, especially, have become extremely popular in recent years.

They are seen as a sign of pampering and luxury, but they are also used for health reasons.

Adapting the millennia-old concept of aromatherapy passed down from the ancient Egyptians, scented candles can relieve stress, relax you, sharpen the mind, evoke fond memories, and in some cases, even help with feelings sorrow. In one word, they can offer an escape from your everyday troubles.

And that is exactly what a new Bahamian company, aptly named ‘Scented Escape’, hopes to offer customers with its line of candles – full mental relaxation.

Made right here in the country, each scent is meticulously hand-picked by artisan and owner Shanae Smith. She chooses the aromas based on her own fond memories of scents and makes sure to include those which create an atmosphere of good energy and calm vibes.

“When I started making candles as my creative outlet I mainly kept them for myself and used them to enhance the décor of my own home. I would light a candle in each room when I got home from work and go about my evening as usual. It was during this time that I started to realise that my space felt calmer and more relaxed. I started to pick up on how the different fragrances made me feel, especially after a stressful day,” Ms Smith told Tribune Weekend.

She then started to realise how various scents reminded her of different places and moments in her life. This led to the idea of starting a candle company.

“The name Scented Escape plays upon the idea of creating an atmosphere of automatic relaxation, bringing about good feelings and even evoking fond memories for the people around.

It’s the creation of a mental getaway

through the use of fragrance. We can’t always book a flight and get away from the daily stressors of life, but we can find ways to separate from it all, even if just for a moment. I want to help create that moment or at least start the process,” said Ms Smith.

The Scented Escape catalogue offers four distinct scented soy candles. Each candle is mixed, poured and labelled by hand.

“One of our best sellers has been our Bahama Bloom scent which is actually a scent that pays homage to the Bahamas. We’ve received a few suggestions, of course, on ways to improve the line and I do plan on taking all of it into consideration as the company continues to grow,’ she said.

Throughout the year, Ms Smith said she usually takes part in a number of events to allow potential customers to sample each scent as well as schedule meet-ups for scent testing and delivery. The company’s Facebook page is also used to display various candles and offer detailed descriptions of each scent.

Becoming a business owner was always one of Ms Smith’s life goals, but becoming a candle maker had previously never occurred to her.

for her because she is also a science enthusiast and works full time in the medical field.

“Being able to mix both my love for science with my desire to be creative became an outlet for me. I started making candles for my own benefit, but once I realised what they were doing for me both mentally and aesthetically, I knew there was more I could do with them. The idea of being able to merge my analytical side with my creative side and run a business from it has been the perfect combination for me. Even though the process of business ownership has been a tedious one, I am fully enjoying every aspect of it,” said Ms Smith.

She is thankful for her parents Michael and Lynn Smith, who worked in areas they loved all their lives, making their careers more than just a job while encouraging her to do the same. Along with grandparents, her significant other, Mitch Bain, is also an inspiration, and was the main push behind her to take candlemaking to the next level through business ownership.

Since opening in 2017, Ms Smith’s overall goal for Scented Escape has been to become a well-known luxury Bahamian candle brand. She hopes to expand the line with many more scents and collections, and eventually sell them on the international market.

With Valentine’s Day approaching, Ms Smith said the perfect gift from Scented Escape would have to be her “Date Night” candle. She describes it as the perfect combination of a masculine and feminine fragrance that gives off a very sensual and sexy vibe when lit.

“Also for the Valentine season, we offer a a limited edition candle called ‘Love Spell’. We released this scent last year for Valentine and will be bringing it back for this season. It’s a classic scent and was loved by our female customers during last year’s release so it is definitely a must for the perfect Valentine gift,” she said.

For the remainder of the year she is looking forward to releasing two new scents, along with the limited edition scents for the various seasons.

“I want to continue building our customer base through our social media pages, word of mouth as well as hopefully taking part in various shopping events on the island. I’m looking forward to the growth of the company as I work to make candles that can be loved and enjoyed by everyone,” said Ms Smith.

Young entrepreneur’s fruit punch brings him hard-earned success

OSES Taylor wanted to become an entrepreneur from the time he was in high school.

So after leaving school several years ago he began pursuing his dream immediately.

“I knew right away what I wanted to do. I never had an interest in working for anyone,” he told Tribune Weekend.

At first he made natural juices such as carrot and peanut from scratch that he sold to customers. Then he ventured into creating a special fruit punch blend made of local ingredients that is now the major product offering of his beverage company, Red Sea Bahamas.

“It is a Bahamian based tropical fruit punch juice and it is different from any other fruit punch that you may find on the market right now,” the young entrepreneur said.

The Red Sea fruit punch juice can be found in 60 stores locally, including several Rubis and Shell stations, Sammy’s Chicken, Tropical Gyro and the University of the Bahamas’ Grab N Go. But Moses admits getting to the point where his product is distributed at those local stores as so-called “solopreneur” was not an easy task. He had to constantly put himself and his product out there.

“We received great feedback from people who enjoyed the product. So what I did was connect with different people, drop off samples at different establishments and did my best to keep networking,” he said.

What also helped him manage this effort as a small business owner was the knowledge he gained after completing certifications and his Associate’s degree in Business

He hopes to have his juices in just about every grocery and convenient store on the island.

Following his dream has been rewarding for the most part. But he admits that once you become a business owner, you will yourself playing multiple roles you may have not anticipated.

Nevertheless, he continues to be a strong proponent of entrepreneurship.

“I believe entrepreneurship builds a country. It is responsible for creating a lot of the jobs in the economy. As our businesses grow we provide a lot of jobs and this in some way takes a lot of

Cara says: “OK, I love Gaga, which is why I still think this is a hit even though to be honest, she is wearing a silk towel with a train. But be that as it may, she pulls off the look, right down to the fab makeup and Hollywood glam hair.”

Exuma-based Fyre Festival subject of new Netflix documentary

early two years after the fiasco that was Fyre Festival, Netflix is releasing a documentary with a behind the scenes look at the disastrous Exuma-based event which collapsed before it even got off the ground.

Organised by hip hop star Ja Rule and his technology entrepreneur buddy, Billy McFarland – who was sentenced to six years in prison on fraud charges – to promote the Fyre music booking app, the festival was scheduled to take place over two weekends in April and May 2017.

Review: The surprises keep coming in ‘The Perfect Liar’

T

he great thing about being an artist, Max tells his students, is that you can imagine things into being.

But only he knows the extremes to which he has taken that.

After fleeing a miserable childhood, Max spent his teenage years living on the streets of New York City. Yet now, in his 30s, he is teaching art in a picturesque Vermont college town. He and his new wife, Susannah, are plainly in love. He gets along smashingly with Freddy, her teenage son from a previous marriage. And he is a rising star in his field, commanding lucrative speaking fees. He seems to have fashioned a perfect life.

Max lacks the academic credentials his job requires, but he has more than enough intelligence, boldness and

charisma to sustain the fraud. Everything will be just fine as long as no one finds the body of the real Max buried on a New Hampshire mountainside.

But in the very first chapter of “The Perfect Liar,” the sixth novel by Vermont College of Fine Arts President Thomas Christopher Greene, Susannah finds a note, written in capital letters, on their front door: “I KNOW WHO YOU ARE.” Susannah, who knows nothing of her husband’s past, is confused and shaken.

Max assures her it’s just a stupid prank, but he is secretly determined to track down and eliminate the threat.

Once he believes he has done so, however, more notes — “DID YOU GET AWAY WITH IT?” and “I KNOW WHAT YOU DID” — appear on their front door. Before long, the

reader is sure to wonder if Susannah, too, may be harbouring a dark secret.

The result is a taut, well-written thriller, but this novel is more than that. It is also both a textured examination of the lies people tell to those they love and a reminder that it is never easy to escape the traumas of a troubled childhood.

The pace is crisp, the surprises keep coming and there are two big ones that readers are unlikely to see coming.

Real and emotional prisons flow through ‘No Mercy’ Prisons come in various forms, as Joanna Schaffhausen shows in her second outstanding novel, “No Mercy.” There are the mortar-and-brick prisons in which criminals are housed, such as the serial killer who kidnapped and tortured Ellery Hathaway. And there are mental prisons where survivors of violent crimes, such as Ellery, are relegated against their will because of memories or fear that their attacker is free or will be released.

Real and emotional prisons flow through “No Mercy.” Ellery at age 14 was kidnapped and tortured by serial killer Francis Coben, now in prison. She was the only victim to survive Coben because she was rescued by FBI profiler Reed Markham. Emotionally, Ellery is still locked in that closet, fearful, as if those 15 years have never passed.

Ellery changed her name, reinvented herself and established a solid career as a police officer in Woodbury, Massachusetts. But the past always lurks behind her, and

she is now on involuntary leave after shooting a murderer. Her story continues to be fodder for movies, TV shows, articles and mail from those who revere her for surviving another predator and those who criticize her for surviving. Temporarily living in Boston, she sees a court-appointed psychiatrist who has her attending group therapy with other victims of violent crimes in the hope of getting her job back.

Trying to keep her problems from the group, Ellery becomes intrigued with the stories of two members. Wendy Mendoza wants Ellery to try to find who raped her eight months ago, especially since the police investigation has stalled.

As she looks into the attack on Wendy, Ellery becomes interested in the background of Myra Gallagher whose 4-year-old son died in an arson fire more than 20 years before, leaving her badly burned.

Ellery asks Reed for help because she cannot officially investigate either case. Their shared history bound them together but

“No Mercy” finds Ellery and Reed drawing closer together.

Schaffhausen takes advantage of her second novel to delve deeper into Ellery, realistically showing how her past continues to control her life. She will forever be known as “the girl who got away.” She has no real friends and doesn’t date so she will never have to explain her past. Her closest companion is Bump, her loving basset hound.

Ellery wants justice for herself and other crime victims, yet is fully aware that she and others in her situation will never be the same.

“No Mercy” illustrates an increased skill at storytelling that Schaffhausen showed in her excellent 2017 debut, “The Vanishing Season,” the 2016 winner of the First Crime Novel Competition by Minotaur Books and the Mystery Writers of America’s First Crime Novel Award.

A long-running series with Ellery will be most welcomed.

strawberries Although they have not traditionally been cultivated in Bahamas, new variations are making it possible for this delicious fruit to be grown locally, says Jack Hardy

S

trawberries grow during the height of summer in temperate climates, but adaptations have made it so certain strawberries can thrive and produce fruit during subtropical winter and spring. Florida produces just about all the strawberries sold in the US during this period, yet many gardeners in the Bahamas pass on growing these delicious fruits, mainly because they have not been part of our cultivation heritage.

The type of strawberry that produces well in the Bahamas is everbearing, or perpetual, a tough full-rooted perennial that comfortably survives our summer heat. There is no excuse these days to omit strawberries from our list of garden favourites.

The initial source will be, of course, our local nursery that imports strawberry plants from Florida. It is hard to buy just one or two plants; perhaps six

or ten would be better. Your purchase will be an investment because if you do things right you will have dozens of free plants next year and will not need to return to the nursery.

The first – and most important – rule to follow is: Do not plant strawberries in your garden. Your strawberries come in pots and in pots they must stay. Strawberries appreciate soils with a pH between 5.5 and 7. Our local soil is heavily alkaline. Transfer your strawberry plants to three-gallon pots containing good potting soil or potting mix with compost added. A sprinkling of time-release fertilizer such as Osmocote will provide extra sustenance during the bearing season and weekly sprays of Miracle-Gro Miracid will maintain the soil’s pH at the right value. Place your new babies in full sun and watch for flowers and fruit.

Strawberries are fast producers and from flowering to ripe fruit production takes less than two weeks. The fruits should not touch the ground so you must find some way to cushion them.

In an emergency I use crumpled paper

towel under the fruit clusters. Birds also enjoy ripe strawberries and you may have to invest in netting to prevent them eating more than you do.

Strawberry plants are perennials and follow a general pattern of producing fruit in winter and spring then propagate new plants by sending out stolons.

Stolons are runners that grow from the parent plant and produce a string of new plants, usually between three and five. These new plants should be left on the stolon until they are 3” to 4” tall then placed individually into 3½” pots to root while still attached to the mother plant.

It is best to anchor the plants in place and for this I use a type of plastic tableware that has elongated holes in the handles. When snipped in the right place with a pruner you have an ideal instrument for pinning your rootless plantlets into the mix in the small pots.

Slip the open end of the plastic pin over the stolon leading to the plant.

Make a small depression in the centre of the mix – a mere half inch. Place the plantlet base into the depression and pin it firmly with the plastic pin. Keep the small pots fairly damp while the plantlets develop roots. Do not fertilize at this stage.

The vitality of the stolon-produced plantlets tends to decrease along the length of the stolon and I prefer to nip

off the end of the stolon once I have three babies. A mother plant in a big pot with a string of developing plantlets in small pots makes me think of a duck with a line of ducklings.

There will be a great temptation as the plantlets grow bigger to snip them away from the parent plant. This temptation should be resisted. Only cut the new plants away once the stolon – like an umbilical cord – has dried up and turned from bright green to blackish brown. At this point the pots containing the new plants should be fairly root bound and this is a good time to transfer the plants into 3-gallon pots containing a good potting mix mixed with compost.

Stolons can be produced by mature strawberry plants at any time but are best nipped away during the fruiting season when the plants should be putting all their energy into plump sweet strawberries. Once the production of fruit has tailed we can allow stolons to develop and increase the number of plants we own. Towards the end of autumn we should cut away any stolons that start to develop. Fertilize the plants with Osmocote and compost tea to give strength for the blooming and fruiting stage.

Strawberry plants produce in their first year and for many years after. It is a good idea to label your strawberry pots so you know the age of the plants you have. Three years of production is probably the best you can expect from your plants. If you start your strawberry collection with ten plants from the nursery you will have a couple of hundred plants in three years.

A note on nomenclature: I have always thought strawberries were named after the straw used to protect plants from frost, which is then tucked underneath to keep the fruits off the ground. Another possibility is they were named strewberries after their habit of throwing out or strewing both fruits and stolons away from plants.

The greatest movies of all time – Part II

Sir Christopher Ondaatje writes about the best films ever made – and compares his choices with the great movie directors and historians.

I

n spite my admiration for Alfred Hitchcock and Martin Scorsese, I did not follow their learned selection and reasoning.

After debating the merits of Alfred Hitchcock’s ten best movies, and Martin Scorsese’s list of his 12 best films, did not choose a single “10 Best Movies” list, but instead chose three categories of film – which made the selection process a little easier. My reasons for these selections are given below.

MY TEN BEST MOVIES

• Citizen Kane (1941) Directed by Orson Welles – his first and best film about a Hearst-like publisher’s rise to power.

• The Third Man (1949) British film noir directed

by Carol Reed, written by Graham Greene, set in postWorld War II in Vienna.

The use of black-and-white expressionist cinematography

by Robert Krasker is stunning.

The film starred Joseph Cotten, Alida Valli, Orson Welles and Trevor Howard. Anton Karas wrote and performed the musical score - which featured only the zither.

• Gone With the Wind (1939) The greatest example of story-telling on film lasting nearly four hours. The film of Margaret Mitchell’s Civil War novel starring Vivien Leigh who played Scarlett O’Hara.

• The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985) Romantic fantasy comedy film written and directed by Woody Allen and starring Mia Farrow, Jeff Daniels, and Danny Aiello. The film is the story of a film character named Tom Baxter who leaves the fictional world of film to join the real world. Cecilia (Mia Farrow) – a clumsy waitress escapes her bleak and loveless marriage when she falls in love with an archaeologist – the screen character played by Jeff Daniels.

Inventive, funny and magical. Probably Allen’s best film.

The film is a celebration of a time and place in American movie history when everything came together to make a new art form.

For this second nostalgic documentary, archivists featured more obscure musical numbers from MGM’s vaults, and also featured some of the studio’s best known comedy teams such as the Marx Brothers, and Laurel and Hardy; also romantic teams like Spencer Tracey and Katherine Hepburn, and a montage of iconic stars such as Clark Gable, Mickey Rooney, John Barrymore, Wallace Beery, Joan Crawford, Jean Harlow, James Stewart, Lana Turner and Greta Garbo.

Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire hosted the film and danced

together for the first time since the 1946 film Ziegfeld Follies.

“Mr. Monotony” cut from Easter Parade because the half-tuxedo outfit she wore was deemed too risqué; also Garland’s two numbers from Annie Get Your Gun before she was fired and replaced by Betty Hutton; Debbie Reynolds’s “You Are My Lucky Star” cut from Singin’ in the Rain; Ava Gardner’s unused vocal performance of “Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man of Mine” before she was dubbed by vocalist Annette Warren; the unused performance of “Two Faced Woman” lipsynched by Cyd Charisse from The Bad Wagon¬ – presented side-by-side with the performance from the film Torch Song using the same vocal track but now lip-synched by Joan Crawford in Blackface; an alternate version of “A Lady Loves” performed by

Debbie Reynolds in I Love Melvin intercut with the version used in the film.

Gene Kelly, June Allyson, Cyd Charisse, Lena Horne, Howard Keel, Ann Miller, Debbie Reynolds, Mickey Rooney and Esther Williams hosted this third instalment.

******* So there you have it. Alfred Hitchcock’s ten best movies, Martin Scorsese’s 12 best movies; Leonard Maltin’s 100 must-see films of the 20th century and my 10 best movies, 10 best comedies, and 10 best musicals. What a lot of research and what a lot of argument to make these decisions. Aren’t we lucky for the invention and what they still refer to as the illusion of motion pictures – which is based on the optical phenomena known as persistence of vision and the phi phenomenon. The first of these causes the brain to retain images cast upon the retina of the eye for a fraction of a second beyond their disappearance from the field of sight, while the latter creates apparent movement between images when they succeed one another rapidly.

Together these phenomena permit the succession of still frames on a motion-picture film strip to represent continuous movement when projected at the proper speed (traditionally 16 frames per second for silent films, and 24 frames per second for sound films.

What would we do without this illusion and without moving pictures?

Restored Pompeii gladiator building open to public ROME (AP) — A 2,000-year-old building where Roman gladiators in Pompeii trained for combat has opened to the public eight years after its collapse following rainfall.

The Pompeii archaeological site said the public can tour the Schola Armaturarum on Thursdays. Experts will explain their painstaking restoration of frescoes that decorated the site where gladiators trained before combat in the ancient Roman city.

Its opening was hailed by Italy’s culture ministry as the “symbolic place of Pompeii’s rebirth,” following years of dismaying news that various ruins had crumbled amid modern-day neglect of the sprawling, once-flourishing city that was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD The building, which has been previously excavated some 100 years ago, had also suffered heavy damage from World War II Allied bombing. A few years later, reinforced concrete was used to build a protective cover.

A park statement said prosecutors investigating the 2010 collapse didn’t pinpoint responsibility. But it said there were several “probable” interlaced factors that were aggravated by days of heavy rain. Those factors included probable malfunction of a drainage system, the weight of the postwar addition of cement and iron and “lack of a planned system of monitoring and maintenance.”

Restoration work after the collapse did, however, bolster knowledge about the building’s use, with archaeologists saying it appears to have served as a home to an ancient military association, which sometimes hosted banquets there.

apparently used by servants, to prepare for such banquets, as well as amphorae, or storage jugs, containing oil, fine wine and fish sauce imported from Crete, Sicily, Spain and Africa, the archaeological park said.

Several other recent finds point to better days for the popular Pompeii tourist site.

ROME (AP) — Archaeologists have unearthed the petrified remains of a harnessed horse and saddle in the stable of an ancient villa in a Pompeii suburb.

Pompeii archaeological park head Massimo Osanna told Italian news agency ANSA that the villa belonged to a high-ranking military officer, perhaps a general, during ancient Roman times.

Osanna was quoted on Sunday as saying the remains of two or three other horses were also discovered.

Among the more recent discoveries, the remains of a harnessed horse were found in an excavated stable of what was an ancient villa on Pompeii’s outskirts. Other excavations have found well-preserved fresco decorations.

Massimo Osanna, director of the Pompeii archaeological site, said the archaeological park would concentrate on scheduled maintenance in hopes of preventing similar collapses.

“The time for extraordinary maintenance and restoration is over. Now the time for scheduled maintenance begins,” Osanna said.

In 2013, Italy’s government approved the appointment of a special superintendent to ensure that millions of euros in government and European Union funds for maintenance and restoration of the archaeological marvel and tourist site would be properly spent.

A rash of collapses of structures in ancient Pompeii had sparked concern about Pompeii’s future. Days after the gladiators’ training facilities crumbled into fragments, a stretch of garden wall ringing the ancient House of the Moralist gave way after days of torrential rain.

Italy’s national budget has long skimped on funding for ordinary maintenance and protection of its vast artistic, architectural and archaeological treasures.

The villa’s terraces had views of the Bay of Naples and Capri island. The area was previously excavated, during the early 1900s, but later re-buried.

The volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius destroyed flourishing Pompeii, near present-day Naples, in 79 AD. Osanna says suffocating volcanic ash or boiling vapors killed the horses. He hopes the villa eventually will be open for public visits.

Remembering Coral Island

I

n the background above, the white building, located on Silver Cay, is a part of the recently-built campus of the LJM Maritime Academy, the brainchild of well-known Bahamian lawyer and entrepreneur, Lowell J Mortimer. The rusted tower, with the remains of what used to be a footbridge from/to Silver Cay, are remnants of a once-popular resort, marine park and tourist attraction called Coral Island.

Developed by Coral World International Limited, an Israeli company whose first such park was in Eilat, Israel, Coral Island was the company’s second, and biggest park and opened to the public in 1987.

Built on a 16-acre private island, this self-contained resort boasted 22 luxury villas, each at the edge of the sea, where guests could have an unobstructed view of the cruise ships entering and leaving Nassau Harbour.

The Coral Island Marine Park, with its marine museum, underwater observatory, stingray, shark and turtle pools, touch pool and snorkel trail, included salt water tanks of varying sizes. The biggest, holding 50,000 gallons of constantly changing seawater, was the shark tank, where a favourite pastime of visitors was watching these creatures being fed.

The turtle pool contained loggerhead, Hawksbill and green turtles, all three endangered species. Here, they were protected from predators, to help preserve the species.

The 100-foot high tower was Coral Island’s main attraction, almost its trademark. It had a bar, gift shop and two viewing decks, with spectacular views of both land and sea. But that wasn’t all.

Twenty feet below the waterline of the tower, and accessible by a winding stairway, was an air-conditioned lounge with 22 glass picture windows, offering fascinating, 360-degree views of the underwater world, with countless varieties of colourful marine life, in their natural habitat – all free to come and go at will. But these denizens of the not-too-deep were happy to hang out at Coral Island, because the resort fed them well.

Once Nassau’s No 1 tourist attraction, all that remains of Coral Island today is its once iconic, now rusting 100ft tower.

It became the No 1 tourist attraction in Nassau and visitors from every hotel on New Providence and Paradise Island, as well as crowds of Bahamian residents, flocked to dine at Coral Island and watch the undersea activities. My favourites were the enormous, very laid-back crawfish, who stared at me through the glass, knowing they were safe from being speared.

In 1995, the park was sold to the owners of the Marriott Nassau Beach Hotel and the name was changed to Silver Cay. Then came a hurricane that wreaked very expensive havoc on the resort, so that it was never restored.

But the rusting remains of the 100foot tower continue to remind us of what it was like in its heyday.

All about the

B-Humane Awards

I

t has been fascinating to be part of what is a very exciting nominations season.

A couple of weeks ago the Bahamas Humane Society announced that nominations were open for the B-Humane Awards.

For those of you who do not know, the B-Humane Awards are given out yearly to persons who have gone above and beyond the expected to help animals in this nation.

We have four constant categories and have, this year, added a new category that will be in effect when applicable.

We started the B-Humane Awards the year I became president of the Bahamas Humane Society in 2008, and I felt that people who care for, love and nurture animals receive absolutely no recognition whatsoever in the Bahamas, In fact, it is frequently used as a vehicle for ridicule and criticism.

Moreover, quite often, I receive menacing and aggressive messages when it is reported on social media that I or somebody else has done something kind or generous for the animal population. We are instantly accused of not caring about humans, or that we like animals better than humans, or any other ridiculous accusation in a very derisive tone.

I decided that, clearly, there was a niche for an award for these remarkable souls who dedicate their time, money, love and nerves to the care of the forgotten and forlorn.

Now I will hasten to say that every “animal person” I know, every rescuer, ever supporter, is also a person who cares deeply for others. It goes hand in glove actually, if you think about it. If you can’t love a helpless animal, how will you ever learn to love and have compassion for your fellow man?

The first few years we just gave two awards a year to deserving people, then we decided that of the two we would make one a Nassau person and one an Out Island person. A couple of years ago we then decided that there was a need for a corporate award and an international one; the international award is for someone who does not live in the Bahamas but does a lot to assist the Bahamian animals. This year we

have voted to add a fifth category, only when applicable, and that is a junior award for those under 18 who go and have gone the extra mile.

We put out as much as we can on social media, and we invite nominations for the different categories.

Usually the response in good, but not as enthusiastic as I would have liked.

However, this year it has exceeded all expectations with a very strong response and multiple nominations for very worthy people in all categories.

People were invited to nominate and accompany their nomination with a brief but general description of what the nominee has done in order to warrant nomination.

The nominations close this Sunday, January 20, so you still have time to nominate someone by writing to the Bahamas Humane Society.

The previous winners are below. It is an awesome line-up, a prestigious group, so little wonder people feel strongly about the recognition.

One thing to remember is that serving members of the BHS board are not eligible for nomination. It would be too self-serving and self-adulation is not attractive in anybody.

Awards are wonderful, and it is correct to recognise people for their good works, but that is not why people do what they do. You do it because you want to and it is the right thing to do; no amount of recognition can take the place of knowing that you have saved a creature for suffering, abuse, starvation and fear. The knowledge that you have alleviated suffering and restored

a normal life for a living being is certainly reward enough.

Winners will be announced next week and the awards will be presented at a wonderful, fun-filled evening at the BNT Retreat on Village Road on February 2. There will be prizes, adult hoopla (prizes like tequila, Starbucks, and other fun stuff), a cash bar, The Petit Gourmet food truck with delicious food, DJ Slic Vic of Waterloo fame, and the wonderful, mesmerising Stazzie, singing her smooth signature Jazz and R&B tunes.

Tickets are available at the BHS and at Fox Hill Nursery, at $40 per person, and the event starts at 7pm.

itten season approaches, and Troy here is sure you’ll want to adopt him ahead of the rush.

Troy is about four months old, very playful, and doesn’t mind posing for a dramatic shot. Troy is quite sociable with the other kittens at the Bahamas Humane Society and wants his adopters to know that, really, two kittens are better than one.
