The true meaning of ‘for better or worse’ in ‘Misery Loves Company’

“M

isery Loves Company” is not only a popular saying, but also the theme and title of a new dramatic comedy to be staged this weekend.

Presented by the Real Laughs Network, a theatre group dedicated to evoking passion and creativity through the arts, the play will debut at the Dundas Centre for the Performing Arts this evening, with an encore show on Saturday.

Playwright Rakel DeanRolle said the story revolves around a married couple and the challenges they face when they listen to advice from those around them.

“This is a couple where the husband seems to never listen to his wife. Well, he gets sick with these headaches so he has to go to the doctor where he is diagnosed with high blood pressure and prescribed pressure tablets. He refuses to take the medicine after listening to his friends, because they tell him that the pills will affect his libido.”

However, the husband suffers a stroke and his wife, who was a stay-at-home mother up until this point, has to go back to work and become the primary bread winner for the family. In the meantime, there are the actions of an eightyear-old mouthy daughter to contend with, and the mother soon finds herself listening to her friends which causes even more tension in her marriage.

“That is why I decided to call it ‘Misery Loves Company’, because (this couple) allows a lot of people to pass judgement and affect

their relationship,” said Mrs Dean-Rolle The play was originally scheduled to premiere last November, but was delayed due to Hurricane Dorian.

“After everything that happened with Hurricane Dorian we thought that it would be insensitive to do it at that time and so we postponed the performance to this month,” she said.

She added that the play has several themes she hopes audience members can connect with.

“The first theme is that a marriage is between husband and wife and you need to be careful who you tell your business to, because some people are not the best at giving advice. The other thing is that marriage is for better or worse and you never know what can happen, especially when you have kids.”

Doors for “Misery Loves Company” open at 7pm and showtime is at 8pm. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door.

Junkanoo cast a spell on this artist at an early age. He was drawn to the artistry and creativity needed to make the colourful costumes seen at the parades. Now, he tells Cara Hunt, he wants to show the public that there is another dimension to this cultural staple.

hile he pastes and rushes on a constant basis – including rushing every week on Paradise Island – D Levar Adams wanted to focus on creating more permanent renditions of Junkanoo rather than the costumes which are discarded on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. “I love Junkanoo, but I wanted to showcase that there is more to this art form than just making the costumes to rush in during the parades,” he says. “I wanted to focus on the more permanent side of this art form. I want to capture the essence of our culture.”

“I would have to say that I was really inspired by the late Jackson Burnside and all the things that he did at Doongalik and of course by being around him as a member of the One Family Junkanoo group. I remember that I would drive by Doongalik and say to myself that I want to work there one day and that was dream that really came true.

Although he is also quite skilled in other styles such as landscapes and portraiture, Levar says that artistically he is drawn to the freestyle aspect of Junkanoo art - “You are creating something from scratch and I love the colours of Junkanoo. In fact, my dream project while I can’t visualise it exactly, it would be

His work features Junkanoo images on canvas as well as Junkanoo dolls, and he does larger commissioned work for homes and corporate clients and he has even done a Junkanoo clock for a client overseas.

“I don’t do landscapes, it’s just not my thing,” but “I have gotten into a bit more portraits”.

He said he was inspired to return to doing portraits by fellow artists Jamaal Rolle, Stefan Davis and Allan Pachino, who are all widely known for their work.

Levar explained that portraits are one of the most complex forms of art.

“Portraits require serious skills because you have to capture the essence of your subject and a lot goes into it. It involves studying and observing them for quite a while and it requires a keen attention to detail. It’s different from Junkanoo in that Junkanoo you are creating something from nothing and you have that leeway to do it freestyle,” he said.

“Also with portraits, your proportions have to be exact and you have to have the correct shadowing or else it will look really off.”

Levar has been able to master all these technicalities despite being a self-taught artist for the most part.

“I did do art in high school at St Augustine’s and for the most part learnt the basics such as, you know, painting the still lines of the orange and stuff, but when I also did quite a lot of research on my own reading books and educating myself. There are a lot of artists in this country who have the real raw artistic talent and doing portraits is one of those things that you can also get good at by doing it often but

They appreciate it for what it is and are willing to pay it for it. Additionally, people in the past considered art to be from a touristy standpoint – landscapes of the beach or the clapboard house, or the poinciana tree or the fisherman, that is what people considered to be Bahamian art, but it has now evolved to be whatever the artist chooses.”

He added that people are now more exposed to art whether it be through vacation or by seeing it on social media, but that they are now also keen to see themselves reflected in the art they place in their homes as well.

He added that Bahamian culture is expanding around the world.

The New Duff explores new culinary horizons

T

he quintessential Bahamian dessert is undergoing somewhat of a renaissance.

Guava duff – those sweet spongy slices of dough with spirals of guava, usually served warm with a butter rum sauce – is a local tradition. One that the team of The New Duff has spent the last year reinventing.

Innovation, succulent ginger pork, silky sugar bananas, sleepless nights, and pillowy soft dough are just some of the ingredients that have fuelled their recent success, the team said.

The New Duff team, led

by Chef Owner Kendrick Delaney, has helped to transform the Bahamian food landscape in the just under two years of operation. The New Duff’s signature four flavours of duff offerings, now expanded into savoury stuffed buns, have made it way into numerous festivals, birthday parties, wedding receptions and offices across New Providence, and are now working their way into the Family Islands.

Chef Delaney said: “It really has been a long, but exciting road this year (2019). We were really happy at the positive reception of our new take on guava duff, even happier when the fried sugar banana, pina colada and caramel coconut flavours took off, but we’re blown away by the popularity of our savoury line of stuffed buns. It’s our goal to get Bahamians interested and excited about new culinary horizons.”

We’ve just launched our holiday flavour, our pineapple upside down duff, which we can’t seem to make enough of. We’re also poised to launch on many more shelves across the island and there will be some other exciting announcements as well.”

The New Duff, the team said, is set to take 2020 by storm, sponsored and supported by its two main allies, Commonwealth Brewery and the Ministry of Tourism.

Traditional Indian cuisine gets Bahamian treatment Tandoori style cooking with fresh seafood

HE START of the year is bringing many new delights to the Baha Mar resort – specifically one-of-a-kind culinary experiences.

One of these experiences can be found at the Rosewood in the form of the Malam Indian Grill & Wine Cellar.

The new concept aims to showcase quintessential Indian cooking traditions, combining the unique flavours of the South Asian country with the fresh seafood found throughout Bahamian waters.

“We are celebrating the grand opening of Malam, and naturally this is our brainchild and own concept, which makes this extra special,” said Luigi Romaniello, managing

director at Rosewood Baha Mar. “We have a wonderful chef, Siddharth Krishna, who is authentically Indian and has worked in some fabulous restaurants in London. We thought it was appropriate to present to the Bahamian community, an authentic Indian restaurant because Indian is a cuisine that is becoming more and more popular.”

Malam now joins Rosewood’s existing culinary concepts such as Costa, The Library and Manor Bar. Mr Romaniello said though not generally considered a culinary destination, the Caribbean has much to offer when it comes to fine food and beverages, and the Rosewood

“We wanted this to be more of a social environment so I would say the atmosphere is very social, in a very non-intimidating kind of way. You can sit down to family-style small dishes, as we present to you different flavours. So you can have a wonderful conversation while enjoying all these flavours that India is most famous for. We also have a beautiful cellar that provides a lot of wines persons can pair with the selections - and by the end of the evening you will walk away with a bit of knowledge and a lot of conversation. The grouper is fantastic, the lamb, the artichoke, and so many dishes with an Indian twist,” said Mr Romaniello.

He said between the three brands at Baha Mar – Grand Hyatt, SLS and Rosewood – there are many amazing culinary offerings to enjoy and take advantage of in 2020. Moving forward, the team aims to continue to be community friendly, welcoming tourists and Bahamians alike.

Malam’s menu offers small plates designed for sharing; another nod to the culinary traditions and styles of India. Dishes range from vegetarian-friendly options including smoked sweet potato chaat with cumin raita and crushed eggplant with dal roti and spiced yoghurt to meat-heavy dishes such as tandoori lamb chops with mint chutney and beef xacuti with coconut and chilli.

The robust seafood section offers Bahamian grouper with Hara Salan and gram flour fritters, and half spiny lobster with curry leaf and fresh turmeric.

Additional menu items include Indian classics such as butter chicken and paneer and vegetable curry, as well as desserts like chocolate watalppam with cashew praline and coconut ice cream, and baked yoghurt “Bhapa Doi” with mango and crumble.

Chef Siddharth Krishna told Tribune Weekend the food comes to your table from the kitchen as it is ready. He remembers this was the way of eating for he and his family back home.

“You need about two or three people to dine in with you, order three to five dishes, to enjoy the menu. And that is how it’s supposed to be. My recommendation is to definitely try the grouper, artichokes, spiny lobster, lamb chops, and if they are interested in something very spicy, they should try the curry.

They will enjoy the flavours. Eighty percent of the ingredients I am trying to source locally and we work with local farmers to get as many greens as possible.

This makes me very proud to serve this food. And of course, all of the seafood is local. The people, the weather, the water – you can’t get better than this. It is true that it is a paradise, and I have a great team, and I am very happy that I am leading a great team here,” said Chef Siddharth Malam Indian Grill & Wine Cellar is open for breakfast at 7am–11am on Sunday through Thursday; 7am –11:30am on Friday and Saturday; and dinner is daily at 6pm-10:30 pm.

In addition to Malam, Baha Mar also recently launched Tingum on the Sand – the resort’s first-ever restaurant situated on the beach. The restaurant recalls the relaxed and inviting nature of a casual beach café, elevated to complement the sophisticated character of the Rosewood resort.

Will they find Wally?

Find out when new local series airs

A

new Bahamian television series boasts a cast of well-known Bahamian entertainers, some of whom will be making their acting debut when “Where In the World is Wally?” airs next week.

Renal Brown - who was hailed for a performance in “Rain” by Maria Govan, a 2008 film that made its rounds at International film festivals is also a leading cast member in the television show.

“I always wanted to work with Renal since I saw her in Rain,” said Travolta Cooper, the creative mind behind “Where in the World is Wally?”.

When Travolta set out on creating the show, his idea was having a sixty-second episode show to air on Instagram.

However, the show became a much bigger success and will be aired on Our TV and Rev platforms on January 20.

“Rain in lots of ways was the beginning of all this... this new Bahamian cinema,” he told Tribune Weekend.

And Travolta said the cast - that includes local entertainers such as Bodine Johnson, Sawyerboy, Leah Eneas and

Jonathon Belle - all have a great on-screen chemistry.

“Where in the World is Wally” follows Wally, who finds himself popping up around the world, with no memory (initially) of how or why he is doing so. In addition to the project having its initial adaptation from the filmmaker’s childhood stories, it will feature his personal travels around the world over the past few years (while producing documentaries).

“The more the Instagram shorts were viewed by prospective buyers, the more I kept getting told to develop and make it into an actual full length TV or digital series.

It’s a dream come true and it’s been an amazing ride. This might be the greatest assembly of Bahamian talent on screen ever,” he said.

“Wally” will guest star and employ several Bahamian talents (on and off our shores) and international talent. And while the length of the show has changed, Travolta said everything is pretty much the same.

“The show is pretty much the same, just longer. It’s a simple premise; Wally is missing and his family and friends

are looking for him. The twist - Wally is also lost and trying to locate himself in the world.

“For one, it took more money. And once the money came I had to re-imagine what this world would look like on

TV. The reviews we’ve gotten back so far have been amazing. Everyone feels like this is something new and exciting.

Artist and culture critic the late great Jackson Burnside (before he died) said that ‘by 2020 The Bahamas will no

longer just be known for its sun, sand. and sea. But that it was also be known around the world for its art and culture’.

I can only hope Wally plays a small role in bringing that to reality,” he said.

Review: Jordan and Foxx shine in urgent drama ‘Just Mercy’

here’s usually one film that tops lists whenever powerful legal thrillers are debated — “To Kill a Mockingbird,” set in the 1930s. Now comes a film showing how little has changed since then, based on a murder in the same Alabama town where Harper Lee wrote her masterpiece.

“Just Mercy” is the real story of civil rights attorney Bryan Stevenson and his fight to keep an innocent black man from being executed. It is urgent, searing and powerful, led by a first-rate cast. Though it portrays events more than 25 years ago, it is very much a film of 2019.

Michael B Jordan portrays Stevenson, who founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal organisation that has successfully challenged the death row convictions of more than 130 inmates. Earlier this year, he was the subject of HBO’s film “True Justice: Bryan Stevenson’s Fight for Equality.”

Stevenson has been a dogged fighter for justice, someone Archbishop Desmond Tutu once called “America’s Mandela.” When Starbucks was faced with a racially charged uproar over the arrest of two black men at one of its stores in Philadelphia, it turned to Stevenson for advice.

The film follows one of his first cases, that of Walter McMillian, a black pulpwood worker sentenced to death for the 1986 fatal shooting of an 18-year-old white woman.

Stevenson was able to prove that a key witness had lied and prosecutors withheld important evidence.

BRIE Larson (”Captain Marvel”) plays as Eva Ansley, co-founder of the Equal Justice Initiative McMillian is played by Jamie Foxx and it is his best work in years, raw, soulful and honest. Tim Blake Nelson, as the key witness, also turns in a stunning performance, as does Rob Morgan playing a

death row inmate. Brie Larson as Stevenson’s assistant is unflashy and strong. Jordan is the calm, quiet anchor of the film, his kind eyes radiating pathos.

In a pivotal scene, Foxx’s character asks Stevenson why a Harvard-trained attorney has come down to the South and risked violence to do this legal work. “I know what it’s like to be the shadows,”

Stevenson responds. “That’s why I’m doing this.”

Destin Daniel Cretton directed the film from a screenplay he co-wrote with Andrew Lanham, based on Stevenson’s bestselling 2014 memoir. Stevenson is also an executive producer, and that ensures he’s illuminated in the best light.

So if there’s one weakness in the film, it’s that it sometimes veers into hagiography. The naturalism of the cinematography and acting sometimes clashes with dialogue that seems overly polished.

“I just want to help people,” Jordan says at one point. “I just have to figure out how.” In another scene, Foxx declares to his attorney: “I got my truth back. You gave that to me.”

The film at times follows other great courtroom dramas that build to a emotional conclusion such as “My Cousin Vinny” and “A Few Good Men” but “Just Mercy” has larger and deeper social issues constantly swirling, including criminal justice reform, the death penalty and racial profiling. If ever there was an example of how film can slide from entertainment to advocacy, this is it.

With the exception of Larson and a young corrections officer, no white characters come across as anything but venal and Alabama is portrayed as a place where African Americans are “guilty the moment you’re born.”

While it ends on a happy note, you cry for all those generations of people railroaded into a cell. “Just Mercy” is not always an easy film to watch, but it is necessary MARK KENNEDY AP Entertainment Writer

HE RECENT art exhibition “In 2020” - curated

by Bahamian woman Jodi Minnis - highlighted the works of artists such as Piaget Moss, Matthew Rahming, Averia Wright, Edrin Symonette and Drew Weech.

For Jodi, the goal was to have viewers see the depth of the contemporary art scene in the Bahamas. She tells Tribune Weekend she chose these artists because although they are all at different points in their career, they all worked with overlapping themes.

It is her hope that this exhibition inspires other young curators to do the work - and even do it better than she did.

With regard to the evolution of art exhibitions last year, Jodi said artists in the Bahamas are in a peculiar art community where the number of curators to galleries are not parallel. Therefore, artists tend to “curate” their own work and have a heavy hand in the decision-making process when it comes to their exhibitions.

“I can’t state that this is a progressive or regressive thing, but it is a fact nonetheless.

While there have been good artworks that I’ve seen within exhibitions this year, with the assistance of a strong curatorial hand, the exhibitions could have been better more engaging. The D’Aguilar Art Foundation’s curator, Tessa Whitehead, produced some sturdy exhibitions last year, and there has been very interesting programming coming out of Doongalik Studios as well. I believe that once more curators are given space to work and that we understand that we can have fun with our work and the presentation of it, the evolution will become more gradual,” said Jodi.

She believes there is now a wave of confidence flowing

amongst Bahamian artists, and they are not waiting to be called or to be given opportunities - they are creating their own avenues and taking up space.

“I see more artists understanding that being experimental is a good thing.

They are trying new mediums, attacking new subject matter and redefining rules. I do believe that that within itself is growth as well,” she said.

“The name of the exhibition was inspired by a quote by the late Jackson Burnside that is

on a decal on the glass wall of The Current at Baha Mar. It says, by 2020 more people will travel to the Bahamas for art and culture rather than sun, sand and sea. It echoes like a prophecy, but this new decade that once seemed so far or unimaginable is here.

“The name serves as an umbrella for the ideas that support or challenge the quote I mentioned above. I thought of the exhibition as a space for us to think about what we truly want and need now that we are in this time.

necessary given the fragility of our islands in this post-Dorian atmosphere? What does self-preservation for artists in a touristic space look like negotiate? How feasible is the orange economy for us and what will it take to implement it? All of those questions were buzzing around my head when conceptualising this exhibition,” said Jodi.

After recently moving into a new studio space, Jodi said this year, she is looking forward to creating silently and fleshing a body of work out in 2020.

Karin says: “This Instagram queen is looking less than regal. The beige is horrible on her...and that pattern! Just plain old ugly. And then the cut of the dress just makes her look stiff. Those ‘80s inspired power shoulders do not work with this design. Awful choice.”

Cara says: “The shoulders on this dress make me dislike it.

They just make her look so bulky, almost like a football line-backer. The pattern is a bit drab as well, and overall the dress just lacks any interesting structure or details. Really underwhelming choice for an actress turned influencer.”

Karin says: “Rowan is a pretty girl, but I’m not sure about this heavy makeup on her. The short hair, however, works. As for the gown...well, it looks likes it’s a bit too big on her; it just hangs there. The lilac sequins look nice, but the pattern with naked green women (?) just looks weird.”

Cara says: “The pattern on this dress looks very pretty.

It also has a nice drape to it as well. I am not 100 percent sold on the black straps and the necklace though. I think they feel like they were an after thought for some reason.

Still, she’s evolving as a young fashion icon.”

Karin says: “The jacket (minus the tails) just looks like the top of a power suit, more suited to the office than a swanky Hollywood party.

The cropped pants, while something different, somehow look weird on her. I’m sure it was one of the comfiest outfits of the night, but I still don’t like it.”

Cara says: “This is a fun take on the classic suit. It’s a serviceable look – gets the job done, even if it’s not a blow-me-away look. She looks comfy and relaxed, which is probably best if you want to party all night in Tinsel Town.

I do like the sharp black and white contrast, especially with her dyed hair.”

Karin says: “Polka dots were an unusual and popular choice this year; Zoe Kravitz also sported a similar look.

And while they can be overly cutesy, polka dots can work... just not here. It looks like she’s cosplaying as Minnie Mouse. It’s just not a flattering look. And those latex boots don’t help either.”

Cara says: “First of all, I hate the shoes with this outfit.

I don’t mind the black and white contrast, although it is a bit much, I just don’t like the skirt or the top. The material also looks cheap. Hmmm, I guess that means I don’t like any of it, but she has a great smile!”

Karin says: “Simply gorgeous.

Worthy of Catherine the Great. That wine red is just a beautiful colour on her.

The neckline with the serious bling and the wide skirt are to die for. Helen looks like true Hollywood royalty; always dressed ‘age appropriate’ without sacrificing style.”

Cara says: “OK, what do I love more than a flawless-asalways Helen Mirren? Meryl Streep helping Helen when that lovely red dress had a slight malfunction on the night. But Helen just carried on like the queen she is and didn’t let anything stop her from being fabulous.”

Wendi decides to 'Walk Out' like a boss New female empowerment anthem designed for Carnival

hen Wendi went back to the drawing board with songwriters for her newest single “Walk Out”, there were two musthaves on her list: “I wanted a song that is going to make me whine and make me feel good about being a woman.”

She is happy to report that her songwriters, her husband and bandmate Dyson Knight and Darryl Gervais of Trinidad, hit the nail on the head with this latest track, the second single released by Wendi for this year’s upcoming Carnival season.

“I remember early one morning Dyson got the inspiration and started writing the song and he basically came up with the concept of being a boss and it kinda just came together from there with him co-writing with Darryl. I definitely wanted to feel superior and also feel like whining, so that’s where we got ‘Walk Out’,” she told Tribune Weekend.

The song is focused on women not needing confirmation or validation from anyone to “Walk Out” into the world with confidence, Wendi said.

“It’s definitely an anthem that speaks loud and clear to all women around the world.”

I think I’m going to do perhaps one more song for the Bahamas Carnival season, and of course there’s always going to be more music coming from Wendi,” she said Wendi said her work ethic and circle of friends and supporters are what helped her balance her work life with new motherhood. These factors are also the reason why she is

so quick out of the blocks in 2020.

“I recorded ‘Walk Out’ in November. It was something that kind of, well, fell into my lap. Me being able to work, record and perform is entirely because of my village...my mom, my dad, my husband being able to support me and take care of my baby.”

It is also this community that will help Wendi be on top of her game this year and prepare for what 2020 has in store for her.

“As far as for upcoming performances, there are some things in the works but I can definitely tell you that DK Nation is going to be happening in April and I’ll definitely be performing for that and Visage performances that are in the pipeline, so you will see me at those as well.”

And though she may have missed Bahamas Carnival 2019, Wendi promises she will definitely be present this time around.

“We are definitely working on expanding our borders and getting our music into the region. One of the things I’ve been saying is cross-pollination, cross-pollination, which is why ‘Weakness’ is produced by a Trinidadian team and I’ve connected that team with my guys here in the Bahamas for ‘Walk Out’,” she said.

“I have some other collaborations in the pipeline from different islands. I’m looking

to do a song with an artist from the US Virgin Islands, I’m looking to do a song with an artist from St Lucia. So this year is all about crosspollination... and when I say ‘our’, I’m talking about myself, Dyson Knight and the team at 4 Dove Court, which is Freddie and Sniper, and us really injecting our music into the region.”

Tyler Perry: ‘No need' to fight or protest about Oscar snubs NEW YORK (AP) — The lack of diversity and notable snubs in this year’s Oscar nominations left Tyler Perry annoyed, but he says it’s not worth getting upset because it’s a system that is not going to change.

“There is no need in going back and forth, or fighting, or protesting. It is what it is. This is how it is in Hollywood, and it’s how it will always be,” Perry told The Associated Press on Monday hours after the nominations were announced.

Not only were there no female nominees in directing for the 87th time in Oscar history — a direct snub to Greta Gerwig, director of “Little Women,” as well as several other worthy candidates. There was also only one person of colour, Cynthia Erivo, among the 20 acting nominees. Golden Globe winner Awkwafina (”The Farewell”) was denied a chance at an Oscar. Globe nominees Jennifer Lopez, for her role in “Hustlers,’’ and Beyoncé, for original song “Spirit” from “The Lion King,’’ were also overlooked.

“I feel like Jennifer Lopez should have been nominated.

She did a great job. I feel like Awkwafina did a great job,” Perry said. “Beyoncé should have been nominated. But it is what it is.”

He added that he didn’t “know what all of the hoopla is about.

“It doesn’t have anything to do with what I’m doing as much as it is — I’m just gonna do what I do and just see what happens,” Perry said.

The actor-writer-director created Tyler Perry Studios as a production facility, not only for his television series and film projects but also to provide an alternative to Hollywood. At 330 acres (133 hectares), it’s one of the largest production facilities in the country. Production on such films as “Black Panther” and the upcoming “Bad Boys for Life” has been done there. It has also recently hosted a Democratic presidential debate and the Miss Universe pageant.

Perry’s newest film, “A Fall from Grace,’’ tells the story of a divorced woman looking for love. She finds it and marries, but her shortlived joy turns violent, and she finds herself fighting the legal system for her freedom.

“I don’t know if it’s a departure as much as ... people think it is. People in Hollywood always want you to stick to a certain genre or a certain thing, and there are a lot of different things that I like to do. So, this is a thriller that I was just excited about doing something different.”

He says he wanted to tell a story about a man meeting a woman, “ratcheting that up, and mixing my version of a thriller with that,” Perry said.

The movie stars Phylicia Rashad, Cicely Tyson and Crystal Fox, who stars on Perry’s OWN series “The Haves and the Have Nots.”

“A Fall from Grace’’ premiered last Friday on Netflix.

The muses of a master artist Pablo Picasso Part II Sir Christopher Ondaatje describes Picasso’s life during the years leading up to the outbreak of the Second World War until its conclusion in 1945.

In the period following the upheaval of World War I, Picasso returned to working in a neoclassical style. He was not the only European artist who moved away from a more experimental age. Among them were André Derain, Giorgio de Chirico, Gino Severini and Jean Metzinger. Picasso’s paintings and drawings during this period frequently recall the work of Raphael and Ingres, and he was part of the Novecento Italiano movement. The surrealist writer and poet André Breton declared Picasso as being “one of ours” in his article Le Surréalisme et la peinture, published in Révolution Surréaliste (1925). Picasso’s painting “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon” was reproduced in the magazine in the same issue. Picasso was never really obsessed with the concept of “psychic automatism in its pure state” as described in the Manifesto du Surréaliste, and he continued to exhibit his Cubist works in the first Surréalist Group Exhibition (1925).

This transition in Picasso’s work was informed by Cubism. Surrealism revived Picasso’s attraction to primitivism and eroticism. It was an important development.

During the 1930s the Minotaur replaced the harlequin as a common motif in his work. His use of the Minotaur came partly from his contact

with the surrealists, who often used it as their symbol, and it appears in Picasso’s Guernica. The Minotaur and his mistress Marie-Thérèse Walter feature heavily in his Vollard Suite of etchings. Arguably Picasso’s most famous work of this period is his depiction of the German bombing of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War – Guernica. This large canvas embodies for many the inhumanity, brutality and hopelessness of war. Guernica was exhibited in July 1937 at the Spanish Pavilion at the Paris International Exposition, and then became the centrepiece of an exhibition of 118 works by Picasso, Matisse, Braque and Henri Laurens that toured Scandinavia and England. After Francisco Franco’s victory in Spain, the painting was sent to the United States to raise funds and support for Spanish refugees. Until 1981 the painting was entrusted to the

Museum of Modern Art in New York City. It was Picasso’s condition that the painting should not be delivered to Spain until liberty and democracy had been restored in the country.

In 1939 and 1940, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, under its director Alfred Barr, held a major retrospective of his principal works.

The exhibition was a major factor in promoting and lionising him, and gave the public in America a vision of his artistry which influenced a reinterpretation of his work by contemporary art historians and scholars, despite some ambivalence because of the multiplicity of Picasso’s styles.

In 1935, while still involved with Marie-Thérèse Walter, Picasso was introduced to Dora Maar, a 28-yearold French photographer, painter, and poet. Her real name was Henriette Theodora Markovitch and she was the only daughter of a Croatian architect who obtained several commissions including one for the Embassy of Austria-Hungary in Buenos Aires. The family settled in Paris in 1926 where Dora Maar (a pseudonym she chose) enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Julian. She later frequented André Lhoté’s workshop where she met Henri Cartier-Bresson.

When the workshop closed she left Paris for Barcelona and London where she photographed the depression that followed the Wall Street crash of 1929 in the United States. On her return to Paris she first opened her own workshop, and then in 1930 set up a photography studio on the Rue Campagne-Première with Paul Kefer – also a photographer – who had worked on Jean Epstein’s 1928 film “The Fall of the House of Usher”. They were commercial photographers for advertisements and fashion magazines.

Keenly influenced by Surrealism and with the ideas of the political left, she had an affair with the filmmaker Louis Chavance. In 1935 she was hired as a set photographer on the Jean Renoir film The Crime of Monsieur Lange. In 1936 while working on the set she was

introduced to Picasso at the café Les Deux Magots. Their liaison would last nearly nine years, during which time Picasso did not end his relationship with Marie-Thérèse Walter, mother of his daughter Maya.

Dora Maar photographed the successive steps of the creation of Guernica in his studio in the Rue des Grands-Augustins from May to June 1937, and Picasso used her photographs in his creative process. She was Picasso’s principal model and muse during the late 1930s and early 1940s, and he often represented her in tears.

Her liaison with Picasso, who physically abused her and made her fight Marie-Thérèse for his love, did not end until 1943, although they met again episodically until 1946.

In June 1940, the Germans occupied most of France, while the remainder came under the control of Marshall Philippe Petain, based in Vichy. Picasso retreated to a small fishing village on the Atlantic coast where he rented a small apartment. By 1941 it too was overrun by Hitler’s troops and he found himself in a difficult position. As the creator of the now famous Guernica it was impossible for him to return to Spain. So, despite an offer of asylum in the US and Mexico, Picasso made the questionable decision to return to Paris.

“A sense of fear and claustrophobia gripped the city. Life was characterised by rations, curfews and biting-cold winters where fuel shortages led to people huddling together in cafes to keep warm. There was also the chilling presence of the omnipresent Nazis. Picasso and Dora were receiving news of Jewish friends who had been deported to concentration camps, or tortured for taking part in the Resistance. Dora Maar, in particular, must have been racked with anxiety as she was a member of the leftist group Contra-Attaque. Surprisingly, even though Picasso was regarded by the Nazi regime as a degenerate artist and Guernica had become a symbol of defiance against fascism, he remained free from persecution. Because of his acceptance in America the Nazis were keen not to offend the US. It is possible that his widespread fame protected him.

However, he was denied publicity and prevented from exhibiting his work, which resulted in his disappearance

DORA MAAR, a photographer, painter, and poet, was arguably Picasso’s most important muse. from the world stage. Some of Picasso’s closest friends had been claimed by the Nazis, including the poet Max Jacob.

While some artists colluded with the

Germans, he vehemently refused to engage with them, declining offers of food and tours of Germany. The Gestapo searched his apartment, and

finding a black and white photograph of Guernica, a German soldier asked him if he had done it. Picasso replied: “No. You did.” Picasso’s willingness to shelter anyone sent to him from the Resistance movement was a further indication of his rebellious attitude.

“Determined not to be cowed by the atmosphere of confinement and uncertainty, he continued to work feverishly, including writing poetry and making portraits and busts of Dora Maar. In January 1941 he surprised his friends by writing a play entitled ‘Desire Caught by the Tail’, a curious blend of Picasso’s biting wit, allusions to Dora Maar, macabre imagery and the bleakness of wartime Paris that culminates in disappointment for the bizarre characters obsessed with hunger, cold and love. In 1944 a clandestine reading of the play was organised, in itself an act of defiance in the face of occupation.

The play illustrates how deeply Picasso was embedded in the intellectual and literary circle of the time. The play was directed by Albert Camus, and the actors included Jean-Paul Satre, Simone de Beauvoir and Dora Maar.”

During the war there were hardly any materials available for sculpture or paintings and Picasso was reduced to working with anything that he could get including wood, bottle caps, newspaper, empty cigarette packets and even a bicycle saddle that he shaped into the head of a bull. He painted on hardboard or anything he could and his outlines echoed the austerity and bleakness of a war-torn Paris. They have an eerie sinister presence, and are also reflected in the gruesome powerful portraits he did of Dora Maar. Head of a Woman (1940) portrays a grimacing, haunted skull with clenched teeth set against a background of menacing greys epitomising death and defeat. A bronze and copper sculpture, Death’s Head cries out with the same hellish intensity. However the raw, powerful, brutal, and highly personal paintings of Dora Maar reveal an intensity opposite from the gentle almost lyrical works that Matisse did during this same time.

All Picasso’s images during the war years are images of despair, isolation and fear. Yet they also reveal determination and strength.

PROBABLY Picasso’s most famous work, “Guernica” (1937) is considered a powerful anti-war painting, created as an immediate reaction to the bombing of the Basque town of Guernica by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy during Spanish Civil War. Maar, and as early as 1942 she sensed that the affair was coming to an end.

“Today it’s another landscape in this Sunday at the end of the month of March 1942 in Paris the silence is so great that the songs of the tame birds are like little flames you can see.

I am desperate.

The situation was compounded in 1943 when Francoise Gilot, a beautiful artist 40 years younger than Picasso, came into his life. She became his partner. After the agonising discovery of this new affair, Dora Maar continued to paint, but as her relationship with Picasso waned, so too did his influence on her style.

“Dora Maar was the only one of his muses who stimulated Picasso artistically, intellectually and politically, but the intense flame that had ignited their passion and creative partnership was dying. FRANCOISE GILOT, an artist 40 years younger than Picasso, came into his life in 1943.

In August 1944, German tanks rolled out of Paris and the city was liberated. Picasso was visited by a stream of friends and admirers – delighted to discover that he was still alive.

However his new-found freedom was tempered by the knowledge that his friends in Spain were still prisoners of General Franco. In a bold statement against Franco, Picasso joined the Communist Arty in 1944. (Later he was awarded the Stalin Peace Prize – twice. Once in 1950, and a second time in 1961 – by which time the Award had been renamed the International Lenin Peace Prize). Six weeks after Liberation Picasso was invited to take part in an exhibition of French works at the newly opened Salon d’Automne. A few months later he exhibited his works at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London where viewers were shocked by his gruesome portraits done during the war years.

In 1946, after their separation, Dora Maar had a nervous breakdown.

Picasso bought her a house in Ménerbes, Vaucluse, where she retired and lived alone. She became a staunch Catholic, met the painter Nicolas de Staël, who lived in the same village, and turned to abstract painting. After years of struggling with depression and

her painful separation from Picasso, she became a respected painter with tragic figurative works, such as Portrait of Eluard, Self Portrait, and The Child of 1946. In dark tones they translate the pain of her post-war years.

Dora Maar spent her last years in an apartment in Rue de Savoie, on the Left Bank of Paris. She died on 16 July 1997 when she was eighty nine years old. Although she is mostly remembered as one of Picasso’s lovers, there have been many recent exhibitions (Munich 2001-2002, Marseille 2002, Barcelona 2002, and Paris 2019), and currently at the Tate Modern, London, until March 2020, presenting her as a powerful artist in her own right.

The explanation of Adler’s psychology and philosophy is presented as a continuing dialogue between a skeptical young adult and the sage philosopher, mimicking the way a psychologist would treat a patient. The young person expresses doubts about the tenets of Adlerian psychology; the wise philosopher calmly explains and comforts.

That style can make for slow reading but perhaps a more thorough understanding of Adlerian psychology, which strives to make people comfortable and confident in society.

Adlerian therapy examines feelings of self-worth, anxiety and inferiority to help the person arrive at a sense of belonging.

Among the philosopher’s replies: “Happiness is not something one can enjoy by staying where one is. One has

New discoveries are refining the human story

By ELIZABETH SAWCHUK, STONY BROOK UNIVERSITY, AND MARY PRENDERGAST, SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY, MADRID (THE CONVERSATION) – In 1924, a three-year-old child’s skull found in South Africa forever changed how people think about human origins.

The Taung Child, our first encounter with an ancient group of proto-humans or hominins called australopithecines, was a turning point in the study of human evolution. This discovery shifted the focus of human origins research from Europe and Asia onto Africa, setting the stage for the last century of research on the continent and into its “Cradles of Humankind.”

Few people back then would’ve been able to predict what scientists know about evolution today, and now the pace of discovery is faster than ever.

Even since the turn of the 21st century, human origins textbooks have been rewritten over and over again. Just 20 years ago, no one could have imagined what scientists know two decades later about humanity’s deep past, let alone how much knowledge could be extracted from a thimble of dirt, a scrape of dental plaque or satellites in space.

Human fossils are outgrowing the family tree

Although discovered in the 1990s, publication of the 4.4 million year old skeleton nicknamed “Ardi” in 2009 changed scientists’ views on how hominins began walking.

Rounding out our new relatives are a few australopithecines, including Australopithecus deryiremeda and Australopithecus sediba, as well as a potentially late-surviving species of early Homo that reignited debate about when humans first began burying their dead.

Perspectives on our own species have also changed. Archaeologists previously thought Homo sapiens evolved in Africa around 200,000 years ago, but the story has become more complicated. Fossils discovered in Morocco have pushed that date back to 300,000 years ago, consistent with ancient DNA evidence. This raises doubts that our species emerged in any single place.

This century has also brought unexpected discoveries from Europe and Asia. From enigmatic “hobbits” on the Indonesian island of Flores to the Denisovans in Siberia, our ancestors may have encountered a variety

of other hominins when they spread out of Africa. Just this year, researchers reported a new species from the Philippines.

Anthropologists are realising that our Homo sapiens ancestors had much more contact with other human species than previously thought. Today, human evolution looks less like Darwin’s tree and more like a muddy, braided stream.

Ancient DNA reveals old relationships

Many recent discoveries have been made possible by the new science of ancient DNA. Since scientists fully sequenced the first ancient human genome in 2010, data from thousands of individuals have shed new insights on our species’ origins and early history.

One shocking discovery is that although our lineages split up to 800,000 years ago, modern humans and Neanderthals mated a number of times during the last Ice Age. This is why many people today possess some Neanderthal DNA. Ancient DNA is how researchers first identified the mysterious Denisovans, who interbred with us and Neanderthals. And while most studies

are still conducted on bones and teeth, it is now possible to extract ancient DNA from other sources like cave dirt and 6,000-year-old chewing gum.

Genetic methods are also reconstructing individual and family relationships, and connecting ancient individuals to living peoples to end decades-long debates.

The applications go far beyond humans. Paleogenomics is yielding surprising discoveries about plants and animals from ancient seeds and skeletons hidden in the backrooms of museums.

Making the invisible visible

DNA is not the only molecule revolutionising studies of the past.

Paleoproteomics, the study of ancient proteins, can determine the species of a fossil and recently linked a nine-foot tall, 1,300-pound extinct ape that lived nearly two million years ago to today’s orangutans.

Dental calculus – the hardened plaque that your dentist scrapes off your teeth – is particularly informative, revealing everything from who was drinking milk 6,000 years ago to the surprising diversity of plants, some likely medicinal, in Neanderthal diets.

Big data is revealing big patterns

While biomolecules help researchers zoom into microscopic detail, other approaches let them zoom out.

Archaeologists have used aerial photography since the 1930s, but widely available satellite imagery now enables researchers to discover new sites and monitor existing ones at risk. Drones flying over sites help investigate how and why they were made and combat looting.

Originally developed for space applications, scientists now use LIDAR – a remote sensing technique that uses lasers to measure distance – to map 3D surfaces and visualise landscapes here on Earth. As a result, ancient cities are emerging from dense vegetation in places like Mexico, Cambodia and South Africa.

Technologies that can peer underground from the surface, such as Ground Penetrating Radar, are also revolutionising the field – for example, revealing previously unknown structures at Stonehenge. More and more, archaeologists are able to do their work without even digging a hole.

Teams of archaeologists are combining big datasets in new ways to understand large-scale processes. In 2019, over 250 archaeologists pooled their findings to show that humans have altered the planet for thousands of years, for example, with a 2,000-year-old irrigation system in China. This echoes other studies that challenge the idea that the Anthropocene, the current period defined by human influences on the planet, only began in the 20th century.

New connections are raising new possibilities

In a year marked by youth-led climate strikes and heightened awareness of a planet in crisis, it may seem counterproductive to look back in time. Yet in so doing, archaeologists are providing empirical support for climate change and revealing how ancient peoples coped with challenging environments.

As one example, studies show that while industrial meat production has serious environmental costs, transhumance – a traditional practice of seasonally moving livestock, now recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage – is not only light on the land today, but helped promote biodiversity and healthy landscapes in the past.

Archaeologists today are contributing their methods, data and perspectives toward a vision for a less damaged, more just planet. While it’s difficult to predict exactly what the next century holds in terms of archaeological discoveries, a new focus on “usable pasts” points in a positive direction.

he news from Down Under is devastating, and it gets worse day after day!

Recently, The Associated Press reported that the New South Wales police force have taken legal action against in excess of 180 individuals, some of these were juvenile offenders. Many of the people who caused the fire – some 53 people who are charged – were just plain stupid and did not follow the laws, didn’t follow the fire ban that was in effect. A further 47 people have been charged with the thoughtless action of discarding a cigarette or a lit match into a dry and susceptible area.

The absolutely scariest and horrible fact is that 24 people were charged with “deliberately-lit bush fires”. What the heck? What kind of sick mind would perpetrate such an action? I am utterly speechless (and you know that doesn’t happen frequently.) Another scary report, this one from Queensland, is that over 70 percent of the fires lit in that state were lit by minors, according to the newspaper The Australian.

When you look at what has happened to Australia so far, so much damage and devastation, it breaks your heart; millions and millions of acres of bush have burned since these fires began in October of last year. Several thousand homes have been destroyed, over 20 humans have died, but the animals, oh my Lord, the animals! Total and utter devastation. It hurts to think of how many have died, and the terrible way they must have perished.

Australia is the home to so many unusual and unique animals: the kangaroo, the wallaby, the koala, the platypus, the echidna, the wombat, and the dingo dog, to just mention a few. The Australians have fiercely protected their wild life, and when I was there, I was spellbound by the extraordinary looks and personalities of these absolutely fantastic creatures.

I remember one day visiting the most amazing rock formation not far from Melbourne called Hanging Rock. I was inspired to

explore this particular formation because many years prior I had seen an extraordinary movie called “Picnic at Hanging Rock”. Not many tourists visit there, though it is a national park and protected.

When we arrived the trees were full of kookaburras. Their “laughter” filled the air, bright pink galah cockatoos flew over head, and with a little effort you could catch sight of some koalas contentedly munching their gum leaves up a tree.

What a magical country Australia is, and it’s wildlife is such an integral part of its unique splendour.

I have done as much research as I can and yet I have not been able to confirm that Hanging Rock is unharmed by the fire, but I hope and pray that it still stands majestic with its plush wildlife unscathed.

Bush fires in Australia are not unusual and they are a yearly occurrence but this year has been so much worse, one of the reasons it that climate change is playing a most definite role, one that so many smart people are prepared to turn their backs on and pretend that climate change is something invented for political gain, please spare me that nonsense. The Australian Out Back is a tinder box waiting for something dreadful to occur, and it has and it still is.

Professor Chris Dickman of the University of Sydney has been quoted as saying that more than 480 million animals have been affected by the bush fires. This

number has been erroneously quoted as the number that have perished. It is practically impossible to know how many have died.

One of the considerations used to reach this estimation is the that there are 17.5 mammals, 20.7 birds, and 129.5 reptiles to every hectare (which is 2.7 acres or size of rugby pitch), so if you multiply the numbers of animals by the number of hectares burnt you come up with the approximate number like Professor Dickman did. However, he was only guesstimating.

It is highly likely that many more animals have perished, because the fires spread into Victoria, and at present I do not have the figures for that state.

One thing for sure though, and that is that Australia is in deep trouble, as are her animals. The koalas (and we do all know that they are not bears, don’t we?) are in serious peril, not only because so many have died, but because their gum trees have been depleted dangerously with these fires and that is all these lovable little Aussies eat.

The sad fact is that so many of these fires could have been avoided if people had followed regulations, but to think that some people actually lit them on purpose is beyond comprehension. I pray these evil-doers are prosecuted to the highest extent of the law and are vilified for their deplorable actions.
