Attorney General hails conviction rate of almost 90 percent By FARRAH JOHNSON Tribune Staff Reporter fjohnson@tribunemedia.net THE conviction rate for serious offences has increased to almost 90 percent despite the challenges brought on by the global pandemic, Attorney General Carl Bethel said yesterday. Speaking at a ceremony held to mark the official opening of the new legal year, Mr Bethel said the conviction rate is 87 percent, up nearly ten percent from the 80 percent record in 2019. “The director of public prosecutions continues to improve the performance of his prosecutors and I’m

proud to confirm that in 2020 the conviction rate increased from 80 percent in 2019, to 87 percent in 2020,” he stated. “Albeit, we know in the reduced circumstances caused by COVID, but I trust that the DPP will continue to exercise his wisdom and sound judgment to ensure that the gains of his prosecutors in 2020 will be repeated, if not exceeded in 2021.” Mr Bethel said 18 nolle prosequi (a stop prosecution order) were entered in 2020, three of which pertained to accused persons or defendants who had passed away. ONLY five percent of juvenile cases were completed during the last legal year, alarming juvenile advocates. There were 1,348 juvenile cases in New Providence at the start of November 2019 and a net total of 386 new cases throughout the period ending on October 31. Only
73 cases were completed during the year. Juvenile cases had the lowest completion rate of all case types listed in the annual judiciary report, lower than civil, criminal, family, immigration, National Insurance Board and traffic cases. THE Bahamas is pushing “to be at the front of the queue” should the US introduce exemptions from its new COVID-19 testing policy that threatens to be “a significant deterrent” to tourism. Dionisio D’Aguilar, Minister of Tourism and Aviation, said this country and the rest of the Englishspeaking Caribbean were moving rapidly to make the case to US authorities that any exemption from tightened pandemic enforcement “should be offered to us” first as a region. ABACO NURSES ‘SICK OUT’ OVER CLINIC CONCERN

In a letter written to health officials, obtained by The Tribune, the nurses voiced several grievances ranging from a lack of safety protocols to unsanitary conditions at the local healthcare facility and called for immediate action to address the long-standing issues.
