SO WHAT’S YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION? BY THE REV DR JOSEPH EMMETTE WEIR
R
ESOLUTION: 1. Thing decided upon; thing determined 2. Power of holding firmly to a purpose. --The Junior Dictionary, p. 564 “What ever happened to New Year’s resolutions?” This is a question which constantly comes to my mind at the beginning of this brand New Year. For, among the most vivid of memories as a youngster growing up in Nassau; was the making of resolutions at the start of a New Year. Yes, I recall my great Aunt Lillian Weir, a respected figure in the Bahamian community in those days affectionately known as “Aunt Lily” calling on all young people to make their New Year’s Resolutions. You see, not only did Aunt Lily advise us to write down our list of New Year’s Resolutions, for weeks into the New Year she would check to determine whether you had kept them. Indeed, most people made such resolutions. In stark contrast, however, few people today speak about Resolutions. New Year’s Resolutions! When last did you hear anyone mention New Year’s Resolutions? Have you made any? I should think that the answer of most people today would be negative! So what has happened? Why has this ostensibly good and positive custom “Gone out of fashion?” Well, there can be no doubt that the main reason was often that the goals or objectives people set for themselves were indeed “many and varied”. Often they would sit down and write a long list of things they planned to achieve inn the New Year. Yes, they would make all kinds of resolutions. These would be pledges to turn over a new leaf in life; resolutions to cut out bad habits; plans to make a new start; and to be kind and loving, and positive in every way. But alas, very often,

many of these fine resolutions were soon broken. Thus many became discouraged and gradually gave up trying to live up to their resolution and this brings us to this time when the making of New Year’s Resolutions has almost become obsolete. Yes, people still look forward to the beginning of a New Year with great hope, but most are wary about making resolutions. What then should we do? Does this mean we should give up making resolutions? By no means! But it does mean we need to exercise control, moderation and wisdom in preparing for the New Year. What then should we do? First, we should think carefully about the future and make resolutions which are few and realistic. It is far better to make one or two resolutions and keep those than setting too many high goals and failing to fulfill them. Success in attaining small victories will give you confidence to achieve much more. As the old folks used to say “take care of the pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves”. Secondly, bear in mind that what is essential about resolutions is not making them but keeping them, for as pointed out about making resolutions is “the power to hold firmly to a purpose!” An important and most practical principle is at stake here. Suppose, for instance, you are overweight and you make it your New Year’s Resolution to lose weight, to become “slim and trim”. So you embark upon a routine of strict dieting and exercising. Well, if you are serious, then you would have to be consistent in sticking to your diet and exercise. For, if you are not fixed in purpose, if you eat a lot and stop exercising, you surely would not lose that weight. So many fail to live up to their Resolutions, simply because they lack “the power to remain focused
on the purpose”. This leads us directly to the third essential for successful making of resolutions – Faith, trust in god. For the definition of resolutions is “the power of holding firmly to a purpose”, begs the question “who determines the purpose of our life?” The answer from the Christian perspective is unequivocally clear—God, Creator of the universe who through His son Jesus, Messiah, has made salvation available to all humankind. For, as our late, esteemed Dr Myles Munroe, never failed to remind us—God has a purpose for the life of each and everyone… including you! When thus making resolutions for the New Year, the question we must all ask ourselves, “is it in keeping with God’s plan for my life?” If it is, then by the grace of God, you will, indeed be able to fulfil it. So, go ahead and make your New Year’s Resolutions! But, in doing so, be humble, be modest, be realistic, concisely set goals that are “doable”. Most of all be open and willing to work in accord with God’s plan for your life, then you will come to comprehend the profound truth of the wonderful testimony of St Paul, “I can do a things through Christ, who strengthens me.” PRAYER Eternal Father, We give you thanks for bringing us to the beginning of this brand New Year. By your Holy Spirit, guide and strengthen us as we face its challenges, its ups and downs; its tribulations and triumphs; that we may use the talents you have given us to the best of our ability, be of service to others, and so glorify your Holy Name Through Christ Jesus we pray, Amen

The Line In The Sand SOOOO....2021. If you’re looking BY AYANNA for some great spirCLARKE itual disquisition on the potential and possibilities of the year – then my friend, this is not the article for you. This article, I guess, is all about the fact that I’m done! I’ve drawn a line in the sand of my life – and I am done! Done with what you may ask? I’m done with selfimposed mediocrity. I’m done with missing out on happiness, love, fulfillment, and all that other stuff because: 1. It makes me uncomfortable 2. It makes others uncomfortable. You see, what I have come to realizse is limits exist for everyone. We all have limits on how much we can stand, how little we will take – not the limits others set for us, but those we set for ourselves. Late last year, I received an utterance in my spirit that blew my natural mind. It was from no preacher, or prophet; instead, it was borne out of a worship experience. The word – MAKE ROOM! As we sang, and the Lord ministered this word to me, I could feel my mind, my attitude, my awareness shift! In those few minutes of singing and worshiping it became less about the right bar, the tempo, the lyrics and more about communion and oneness with the Holy Spirit. It made me ready to say “I have drawn a line in the sand. I won’t deny myself joy, peace, promotion, progress – just because it makes others around me uncomfortable.” I’ve been reading and thinking about a time when Jesus, too, drew in the sand. As the scripture recounts, Jesus was at the Temple when a group of religious leaders, in an effort to have Him incriminate Himself, brought in a woman accused of adultery. The John 8 story continues that during their badgering, Jesus begins to draw (or write) in the sand. He then makes the historic statement, “Let him, who is without sin cast the first stone.” He continues writing until He looks up, finding the accusers had all slinked away – perplexed, or

condemned, we don’t really know. But the accused stood there, alone – absolved and admonished to continue in righteousness. Whether directly correlated or not, from that time to now, drawing a line in the sand has come to represent a boundary of how much will be taken or put up with. It symbolizes a limit or borderline to what we will do or accept. After last year (that is the extent of my reference, I promise), there are just somethings I am no longer willing to put up with:
1. Limited Perspectives – I am so done with people who refuse to see and act upon a bigger picture. I’ve been over just living for immediate gratification, but now that ideal has been intensified. 2. Unexplored Vision – By the end of this year, I would have taken several steps toward becoming the person I’ve always seen in my mind’s eye. 3. Being a Crutch ... or Needing One – For many years, I’ve been the voice of support, the worker bee, the cheerleader for so many others. Now, it’s time to be my own cheerleader, my own support and, if there is work to be done – then it’s gonna be done in an effort to achieve my goals. 4. Toting – Lord, I have to put this one in caps lock. I AM NOT CARRYING ANYTHING OR ANYONE INTO THIS SEASON THAT DOES NOT
SUIT, AGREE WITH, OR BENEFIT MY NEW MINDSET, OR RESOLVE! People, I have drawn a line in the sand – and I believe we all can do the same. The caveat? People who don’t feel the same or don’t think the same will slowly but surely reveal themselves; we’ve all experienced that! But having your new viewpoint misunderstood, unsupported, or condemned doesn’t mean giving up. In this case, do what the Master did. Move beyond all negativity and simply draw your own line. Create limits for everything mendacious, unenthusiastic or downright harmful to your planned progress and do not allow it access. You’re 360-some days from a better you! Determine that there will be no unauthorised access beyond this point! God bless you this week.

Forgive without regret BY ALESHA CADET | TRIBUNE FEATURES WRITER | ACADET@TRIBUNEMEDIA.NET ELVIS MOSS tells Tribune Religion he became inspired to become an author while watching a television commercial he thought spoke directly to him. “It said if you are bored or have lots of time, start a business or get a new hobby. This is when I decided to start writing,” said Mr Moss, who shares the motivation behind his new book, Forgive Without Regret. The former Royal Bahamas Police Officer of over 30 years said when he initially told his four children about the inspiring commercial, they suggested he write the book about his time on the force.
As humans, we hold a grudge against each other for silly things. God made each one of us differently so we must learn to understand and tolerate each other. “I took that advice, but came to a dead end. One night, when laying in bed it came to me that I should write about people I came in contact with and shared different stories with me. A lady from Exuma shared a story with me and this is what inspired the name of the book. Her father abandoned his family for
several years and upon his return, he met an eighteen month old baby girl. Even though it was hard for him, they forgave each other and move on. Years later, he told his wife that he never regretted his decision,” said Mr Moss. The pages of the book follows the character Ken, a husband and father of two, who is being accused of infidelity by his wife Sharon. With all efforts to prove himself innocent, failing - little did Sharon know, a dark cloud once hung over her parents’ marriage too. In the book, Mr Moss said he is taking readers on an adventurous ride as they dive into the story much more. He said the book highlights the true essence of forgiveness, and readers can expect to not only learn about the art of forgiveness, but also the art of restoration and how to live life without regret. “As humans, we hold a grudge against each other for silly things. My father always used to say, ‘the simplest way to live is to treat people the way you would want to be treated and then we can live in peace, but first we must forgive’. About 50 percent of the book is realistic. I pray that my readers grasp the message of forgiveness because un-forgiveness is a prison that will keep you locked in and keep other locked out. When we forgive and release we become healthier mentally, emotionally, spiritually and physically. In the book, I wouldn’t change anything but I would like to thank some people for getting me to this point in my life. My wife, and the entire Moss family past and present, my homeroom teacher Mrs Josephine Parker because even though I was not always a good student, she never gave up on me, and True Vine Publishing and Marketing Company,” said Mr Moss. Thankful to God, he expressed this new venture is a first for him, and he is overwhelmed with excitement about the product being published. “The feedback has been positive so far. I have received reports about people being inspired to forgive and truly release. The book is currently available on amazon, The Bible Book and Gift Centre. FTER coming out of what could be described as a “wilderness” experience for the church the leadership of Ebenezer Baptist Church Exuma is adamant that this new year will see the hand of God in the body of Christ. Rev Stephen Smith unveiled the church’s vision for this new year with a special service held last week. The church’s theme for this year is “The Manifestation of The Greatness of God”. During the watch night service, Pastor Smith encouraged the congregation that in spite of the hardships experienced last year they ought to still give thanks because “God is good”. “Despite the many challenges of 2020 and the current global pandemic, we must give God thanks. Our God remains the same yesterday, today and forever.“ During his first sermon for 2021 at the Divine Worship and Communion Service, Pastor Smith used the metaphor of a ship set to sail to make his point about the direction the church is going. “On this Ebenezer ship we have a variation of people. Some young and old, some sick and well, some married and single. We are going to experience the power and manifestation of the greatness of God. We must claim the healing that God has already granted to us. Our families need to see the manifestation of God’s goodness, our churches need to see the manifestation of God’s goodness. In Matthew chapter 9, Jesus entered into a ship and came into a great city, his own home town. He healed the lame man, He raised Jairus’ daughter from the dead, He healed the woman with the issue of blood for 12 long years, He healed the two blind men. Jesus was moving through His own hometown healing and delivering,” he said. It was important, Rev Smith felt, to begin the new year in the right spiritual footing and casting a vision for his members to hold onto as they make it through the year. He encouraged attendees to make God a priority and anchor their hope in their relationship with Christ. He said it

Rev Smith during this service also took the opportunity to highlight some initiatives that will be the church’s focus this year. “In this year 2021 we will continue to minister in our community of Farmer’s
Hill, Exuma and its Cays, The Bahamas and the world at large. We will continue to use the social media platforms to reach the masses and spread the good news of Jesus. We will continue to believe on this ship that God can do abundantly above all that we can ask or think and that God heals. We will allow our faith in God to grow and we will see the manifestation of
