of Dover Avenue, South Beach Estates who passed away on Friday, December 31st, 2021 in the Princess Margaret Hospital.

Death Notice For Raymond Henry Bridges, 81
passed away peacefully at his home on Cable Beach Thursday, December 30th, 2021. One of twin sons born to Scottish parents in Java, Indonesia on August 3rd, 1937, Roger and his twin brother, James “Mitch” escaped with their mother, Ethel when the Japanese invaded the (then) Dutch East Indies during the Second World War in 1942. They lived in Freemantle, Western Australia for 18 months before boarding a convoy that took them, under heavy attack from German U-Boats, to the United Kingdom, via South Africa. The Family lived in Aberdeen, Scotland and Roger attended the Grammar School at age 7, leaving from Upper 6th to attend Aberdeen University, whence he graduated with M.A. Hons. Degree in English Language and Literature. He was awarded a Full Blue for Boxing as Scottish Universities’ Welterweight Champion and also represented the University at Tennis and Squash. He taught English in Dundee, Scotland for 5 years. In 1966, he travelled to Nassau, Bahamas to take up the post of Head of English at Queen’s College. Roger immediately fell in love with the beauty of the islands and the friendliness of the people and the Bahamas would officially become his home. The next year, in 1967, he married Jean (née Browning), whom he had met in Dundee and they later had a son, Keith and a daughter, Kyrene. He considered his proudest title to be that of “father” and he loved nothing better than spending time with family and friends. In 1971, he became Vice-Principal of QC until 1981 when he moved to the College of The Bahamas where he taught the Bachelor of Education Literature courses for the University of The West Indies. From 1987 to 1994 he was Headmaster of the High School at St. Andrew’s School before his appointment as the Director in Charge of Educational Scholarships with the Lyford Cay Foundation. He retired in 2007 at the age of 70. Roger was Past President of the Rotary Club of South East Nassau and was a Multiple Paul Harris Fellow. He was Rotary’s Assistant District Governor in the Bahamas from 1985 to 1988 and had over 40 years of Perfect Attendance. A mentor to many, not only in education, he promoted strong family values and the importance of community service. Keenly interested in all sports throughout his life, Roger maintained his involvement in Boxing, serving as Vice-President of the Amateur Boxing Federation of The Bahamas. He enjoyed playing golf, darts and collecting stamps but his favorite pastime was watching his beloved team, the Miami Dolphins. He will be fondly remembered for his stories and jokes which he told with confidence, perfect timing and wit. He was a good friend to many and in his later years he looked forward to his bi-weekly meetings with his “coffee crew” buddies. He is survived by his son, Keith (Melissa and Jack) Kelty and daughter, Kyrene Kelty (Corey, Sebastian and Briel) McBride, brother Mitchell (Elinor) Kelty, nephews Clive (Beverley) Kelty and Ashley (Dee) Kelty, Great Nephews, Matthew, Oliver and Elliott. He will be missed by many close and dear friends in Nassau and the world over. A Memorial Service to be held in Nassau will be announced at a later date.

of Treasure Cove, Nassau, The Bahamas, died at her residence on Tuesday 28th December, 2021. Sheila Fay Kanitsch was born in Nassau, on November 13th, 1933 in the family home on Mackey Street, to Reggie and Beulah Malone. She was the third of 5 daughters, the middle child. She was educated at Queen’s College, where her name is still on a plaque for the Eliza Young Conduct award. She participated in sports and was Heath House Captain. She was also a member of the 2nd Nassau Girl Guide Company. After graduation from high school she went to work for British American Insurance, only to move on as she was requested to assist with the opening of the newly formed Family Guardian. After waiting several years while her love attended school in England, on February 8th, 1957 she married Otis Ferdinand Kanitsch, her beloved Fred. They had three children, Alison, Neal and Denise. She devoted herself to motherhood and later returned to work at P.W. Albury & Sons until 1991, when she retired to “be a grandmother”. Sheila was a member of the Horticultural Society and International Garden Club, where her artistic talent was displayed by winning many blue ribbons and later being a flower judge. A grandmother of six and great grandmother of two, Sheila was humble, loving and caring person who finally lost her battle with Alzheimers. She is predeceased by her husband Fred, sisters Byrle and Joan. She is survived by her children Alison (Douglas), Neal (Gayle) and Denise (Johnny); granchildren Kristen (Justin), Ashley, Nicholas, Katie, Jason and Derek; great grandchildren Will and Joseph; sisters Shirley and Yvonne; in-laws Arnley and Patricia, Margaret and Margaret-Rose along with many nieces and nephews. A special thank you to her excellent caregivers Donnette Henlon and Tamara Beverley. Their care for our mother was, without a doubt, heartfelt and exemplary. OST people look at the start of a new year as a fresh beginning, a chance to turn over a new leaf. Resolutions made can range from promises about new habits like working out, eating healthier, to the better management of finances. Tribune Religion spoke to a number of readers who are taking a more spiritual approach to their resolutions. They shared several scriptures that align with their goals this year. “I am done with making commitments I keep only for a week or two and then go about my life just the same as the year before. This year, I want to encourage persons to align their focus with things that would please God and His will,” said Mariah Farrington. “When I think of a scripture that expresses my thought process this year, I think of Psalm 51:10-11: ‘Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me.’ Therefore, I can say I don’t want to have anything to do with anything or anyone that does not have God at their centre; you literally have to go through Him to get to me.” Pauline Pinder said a scripture to take on in this new year is the well-known Jeremiah 29:11-13: “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.” “This year I pray that God will use me in ways that he sees fit. I
pray that He allows me to continue to grow into a better woman and a better person to myself and those around me,” said Pauline. For Cassandra Adams, its Isaiah 40:31: “But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” “I say just because it is not happening for you right now at this moment, doesn’t mean it never will. We all know how God works, at the right time, the Lord, will make it happen. It is always in His time and not ours. This isn’t a resolution, it is a moral mantra to live by for as long as you have life and breath on this earth,” said Cassandra. Valarie Roberts is going to let herself be guided by the very popular scripture Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” “This year, for me, is bringing on a manifestation of talent I always knew I had, skills I am about to execute and the ability to go further than I have ever imagined… especially the ones yet to be awakened. I can feel it deep down in my soul and I know it is going to happen for me because I have the faith and I believe. For once in my life, I am believing in myself with all that I have in me, the time is now,” said Valerie.
A TRIBUTE TO COVID SURVIVORS AND FRONTLINERS OUR greeting in this holiday season should have been: Have a COVID-free Christmas and a Healthy New Year. Our numbers are the worst ever, but for the most part the effects are less severe. Let us begin by thanking God that we have made it see a new year. Too many of our loved ones did not for a variety of reasons. Some spent this holiday in hospital, and that is never what we would choose, but just having a bed was a blessing. Usually, as many people as possible are sent home to be with family even if they have to return. Some were at home but in isolation. How hard it must be to hear and smell all the household

activity and not be able to participate, especially as the one who normally organised most of it. Hopefully, the traditions continued with much more gratitude for what had been often taken for granted in the past. Other people were all in quarantine together and could celebrate as in the past. These were the most fortunate, especially if no one was severely ill. We pray for a full recovery for everyone, even as we intercede for all persons to be COVID-free this year. I encourage being vaccinated and receiving booster shots for those for whom it is medically possible.
Where would we be without our medical frontliners? We have to thank God daily for those who continue to rise to the challenge to show up and “play full out.” They expose themselves and their families to help the rest of us to survive. Their sacrifice and dedication will long be remembered (and remunerated hopefully). People in the uniform branches are so vital to the protection of our liberty and security. We have so many borders as an archipelagic nation, which means that we are vulnerable to “invasion” in the day, but especially at night. Drugs and guns, crime and violence, all threaten our wellbeing. May we be far more vigilant this year in following the protocols,
respecting the law, expressing gratitude to our frontline team, and worshipping God in spirit and in truth. May we teach our nation’s children to do the same, so that they too may have fewest comorbidities possible, and be person’s of integrity and spiritual maturity. TO START NEW YEAR, POPE URGES MORE COUPLES TO ADOPT By NICOLE WINFIELD Associated Press ROME (AP) — Pope Francis called Wednesday for simplified adoption procedures and urged couples to have more children as he presided over his first general audience of the New Year with a novel supporting cast that emphasised his call for a less-clericalised Catholic Church. For the first time, a layman and a nun provided the English and Spanish translations of Francis’ weekly catechism lesson rather than a cloaked monsignor, a small but revolutionary change for the Vatican. Vatican monsignors from the secretariat of state have always provided the summarized translations at the Wednesday general audience. On Wednesday, the clerics only read the translations in French, German,
Portuguese, Arabic, Polish and Italian. The Vatican announced the change ahead of time, saying that starting Wednesday “men and women, religious and lay employees of several dicasteries of the Roman Curia, will be present at the General Audience for the reading of the greetings in various languages.” During his nearly nineyear pontificate, Francis has often criticised the element of Catholic culture that puts priests on a pedestal and has advocated for the “people of God” to take their rightful place in the church. He has called for women in particular to serve in governance roles and has appointed a handful of women religious to important jobs in the Vatican, though none heads a Vatican congregation. HEN celebrity Christian pastor and movie producer DeVon Franklin and Hollywood actress Meagan Good announced they were divorcing two weeks ago the news sent shockwaves through the Christian community. Bahamians naturally chimed in, speculating about what could have possibly caused the demise of the relationship. The couple first came together in 2012 and won the hearts of many by sharing their journey of celibacy before marriage. Their openness turned into a movement called “The Wait” that inspired singles to wait on God’s perfect timing for them to find a mate. So many people were encouraged by DeVon and Meagan’s unique journey. The couple began showing up for interviews on various talk shows, sharing their message of waiting to audiences all around the world. They eventually co-authored the book “The Wait” and subsequently released an accompanying journal for the book. But the couple’s relationship was not seen as the perfect match by everyone. They often had to defend their relationship from outside attacks by religiousminded people who questioned and challenged what they felt was Meagan’s less than modest way of dressing and her ability to play the role of a pastor’s wife and first lady of the church while still appearing in provocative scenes in movies. DeVon always quickly came to his wife’s defence. The couple remained steadfast in their union, until apparently, one day they decided they could not carry on with their marriage. “After much prayer and consideration, we have decided to go into our futures separately but forever connected,” they said in a joint statement posted to both their Instagram accounts. “We celebrate almost a decade of marriage together and a love that is eternal. There’s no one at fault, we believe this is the next best chapter in the evolution of our love. “We are incredibly grateful for the life-changing years we’ve

Erinique told Tribune Religion: “I was in shock when I read about this announcement. Separation and divorce are always a terrible thing, but I guess what hit me the most with this couple is that they shared about relationship and God’s power to help people through marriage in their books and interviews. I kind of felt if God could not help them to stay
together, what hope is there for the rest of us? Then I had a reality check and realised I was idolising this couple and putting them on a pedestal they were never designed to be on.” Sophia speculated that there are a number of things that could have cause the end of the marriage. She said having dated a pastor herself at one point, she can only imagine the immense pressure Meagan would have been under. “From the onset of their relationship I saw it and she wasn’t happy. It was too much pressure. I was once in her shoes when I dated a pastor and all the expectations they placed on me, and I was so young, only 19 at the time. They wanted me to dress a certain
way and just be someone other than myself. She went through that too. I watched from the beginning and she was suffering. Not many saw her pain. But all of that could have put a strain on the relationship,” she said. From the beginning of their relationship and from what they had shared with the world, Melissa said they appeared unequally yoked to her. “She was still making movies with her having sex with other men while he preaching about keeping yourself for only your wife or husband. His standards were godlier than hers. There was not any real respect for her husband there. She wanted to still live as she did before getting married. She didn’t make real sacrifice
for the marriage from as far as I could see,” she said. “But for a couple in Hollywood facing immense pressure, nine years…they had a really good run. So they are still blessed.” Crystal said she wonders if the advice they gave in their books still holds water. “I bought the book and I am wondering whether the information still applies? “But at the end of the day it still takes two people to fight for a relationship and a marriage. It could never be just one person battling and trying to get a relationship. The relationship will forever be one-sided and this is not a marriage. I pray for them in their future,” she said.
Faith still shapes morals and values even after people are ‘done’ with religion By PHILIP SCHWADEL Professor of Sociology, University of Nebraska-Lincoln and SAM HARDY Professor of Psychology, Brigham Young University (THE CONVERSATION) - Religion forms a moral foundation for billions of people throughout the world. In a 2019 survey, 44 percent of Americans – along with 45 percent of people across 34 nations – said that belief in God is necessary “to be moral and have good values.” So what happens to a person’s morality and values when they lose faith? Religion influences morals and values through multiple pathways. It shapes the way people think about and respond to the world, fosters habits such as church attendance and prayer, and provides a web of social connections. As researchers who study the psychology and sociology of religion, we expected that these psychological effects can linger even after observant people leave religion, a group we refer to as “religious dones.” So together with our co-authors Daryl R Van Tongeren and C Nathan DeWall, we sought to test this “religion residue effect” among Americans. Our research addressed the question: Do religious dones maintain some of the morals and values of religious Americans? In other words, just because some people leave religion, does religion fully leave them? Measuring the religious residue effect Recent research demonstrates that religious dones around the world fall between the never religious and the currently religious in terms of thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Many maintain some of the attributes of religious people, such as volunteering
and charitable giving, even after they leave regular faith practices behind. So in our first project, we examined the association between leaving religion and the five moral foundations commonly examined by psychologists: care/harm, fairness/cheating, in-group loyalty/ betrayal, authority/subversion and purity/degradation. We found that religious respondents were the most likely to support each of the five moral foundations. These involve intuitive judgments focusing on feeling the pain of others, and tapping into virtues such as kindness and compassion. For instance, religious Americans are relatively likely to oppose acts they deem “disgusting,” which is a component of the purity/degradation scale. This aligns with previous research on religion and moral foundations. Most importantly, and in line with the religion residue hypothesis, we have found what we call a “stairstep pattern” of beliefs. The consistently religious are more likely than the dones to endorse each moral foundation, and the religious dones are more likely to endorse them than the consistently nonreligious. The one exception was the moral foundation of fairness/cheating, which the dones and the consistently religious supported at similar rates. Put another way, after leaving religion, religious dones maintain some emphasis on each of the five moral foundations, though less so than the consistently religious, which is why we refer to this as a stairstep pattern. Our second project built on research showing that religion is inextricably linked with values, particularly Schwartz’s Circle of Values, the predominant model of universal values used by Western psychologists. Values are the core organizing principles in people’s lives, and religion is positively associated with the
values of security, conformity, tradition and benevolence. These are “social focus values”: beliefs that address a generally understood need for coordinated social action. For this project, we asked a single group of study participants the same questions as they grew older over a period of 10 to 11 years. The participants were adolescents in the first wave of the survey, and in their mid-to-late 20s in the final wave. Our findings revealed another stairstep pattern: The consistently religious among these young adults were significantly more likely than religious dones to support the social focus values of security, conformity and tradition; and religious dones were significantly more likely to support them than the consistently nonreligious. While a similar pattern emerged with the benevolence value, the difference between the religious dones and the consistently nonreligious was not statistically significant. Together, these projects show that the religion residue effect is real. The morals and values of religious dones are more similar to those of religious Americans than they are to the morals and values of other nonreligious Americans. Our follow-up analyses add some nuance to that key finding. For instance, the enduring impact of religious observance on values appears to be strongest among former evangelical Protestants. Among dones who left mainline Protestantism, Catholicism and other religious traditions, the religion residue effect is smaller and less consistent. Our research also suggests that the religious residue effect can decay. The more time that passes after people leave religion, the more their morals and values come to resemble those of people who have never been religious. This is an important
PEXELS JAVON SWABY finding, because a large and growing number of Americans are leaving organised religion, and there is still much to be learned about the psychological and social consequences of this decline in religion. The growing numbers of non-religious As recently as 1990, only 7 percent of Americans reported having no religion. Thirty years later, in 2020, the percentage claiming to be nonreligious had quadrupled, with almost 3 in 10 Americans having no religion. There are now more nonreligious Americans than affiliates of any one single religious tradition, including the two largest: Catholicism and evangelical Protestantism.
This shift in religious practice may fundamentally change Americans’ perceptions of themselves, as well as their views of others. One thing that seems clear, though, is that those who leave religion are not the same as those who have never been religious.
