A year in review

By CARA HUNT Tribune Features Writer cbrennen@tribunemedia.net 2019 WAS quite the year for entertainment in the Bahamas, featuring much anticipated reggae concerts and artists coming together to bring hope to a nation reeling from one the country’s worst natural disasters in history. Here are a few of the past’s years art and entertainment events which made a mark.

The year began with Bay Street coming alive with the sounds of the 2019 New Year’s Day Junkanoo parade, which saw the Valley Boys take the top prize.

In February, all roads led to the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church on West Street for the popular biannual Greek Fest where lamb gyros and Ouzu were the order of the day But it was in March when the year’s biggest event happened. The return of reggae artist Buju Banton to the Bahamas and is highly anticipated “Long Walk to Freedom” concert.

The intensely hyped concert was held at the Thomas A Robinson Stadium and also featured artists such as rapper Lil Duval, Glen Washington, Gramps Morgan, Davido, and

BUJU Banton and the Transforming Spaces Tour.

Buju performed hits such as “Champion”, “Wanna Be Loved”, “Hills and Valleys”, and “Destiny”, among many others, during his approximately 90-minute set. Sporting a suit and his famous dreadlocks, he delivered a well-received performance featuring strong vocals and high energy.

His set was met with much awe and enthusiasm from the crowd, which responded to him with raucous applause, singing and dancing.

In April, art lovers took to the streets for the popular Transforming Spaces which featured an around the island tour of some of the most popular art spaces in New Providence, including Hillside House, Doongalik Studios, Popup Studios, the D’ Aguilar Foundation, and the art gallery University of the Bahamas.

The Summer months were hot and so were the parties, with big events such as Junkanoo Carnival kicking off in May, the Light Summer Vibes Summer Series at Hillside House and plenty of beach bashes to fill the long weekend nights.

However, the Summer came to an abrupt and brutal end when Hurricane Dorian slammed into the Northern Bahamas in September, leaving massive destruction and death in its wake.

Although many events were cancelled in the following weeks as

the nation mourned and turned to rebuilding and helping survivors, the events that did take place were used to raise much needed funds.

One of the biggest of these events was the Power of One concert, which took place in the first October week, as well as a Jesus in the Park concert, a watch party for the IAAF World Championships and a down-home Bahamian concert.

The National Art Gallery also opened its doors and waived admission as it turned into a sanctuary space for those who needed a quiet place to recover from the stress of the storm.

Other entertainment events in the Fall of 2019 included the International Culture, Wine and Food Festival, the Bahamas National Trust’s Wine and Art Festival, and the Curly Cru Fest celebrating natural

Jollification at BNT’s Retreat kicked off the holiday season, followed closely by the ever popular Paradise Plates, which is usually held in September but was postponed due to Hurricane Dorian.

Throughout the year there were also a number of popular balls such as the Heart Ball, the Cancer Society Ball and the Red Ribbon Ball.

And to book-end the year, the Valley Boys won the 2019 Boxing Day parade.

Chaz’ original passion, his love for flying, was also established while he was still in primary school.

“A fifth-grade school trip to the NASA Kennedy Space Centre in Orlando really spiked my interest in aerospace,” he told Tribune Weekend.

“After sleeping under the Saturn V rocket in the Space Centre (as part of our trip), I was sold. I started to learn everything I could about space flight and flight in general and made it my mission to become a pilot as well as one of the aerospace engineers to send astronauts to Mars,” he said.

“I completed my aviation training at Treasure Coast Flight Training in Stuart, Florida. At the time of my training two years ago there were nine Bahamians and a Jamaican, most of which are done training and are flying for companies including but not limited to Western Air, LeAir and Pineapple Air.” For him, Chaz said there is nothing quite like flying.

“Having the opportunity to be in the air, flying a machine that can travel hundreds of miles an hour is mind-blowing. Being thousands of feet above the surface allows you to see the world from a different perspective as well and some of the views just take your breath away.

Being a pilot has also given me the chance to travel, free of charge.”

His favourite time to fly, he said, is either at sunrise or sunset.

“The time period beginning when the sun sets to when the sun rises is definitely my favourite time to fly.

The views are breathtaking during the sunsets and sunrises, and flying at night presents a very peaceful and calming experience for me.”

But being a pilot does also comes with it’s share of challenges.

“One of the difficult parts about being a pilot, or becoming a pilot rather, is that flight school can and often times is expensive, and after completing your training it can be difficult to find an entry-level job.

You also need to have high-quality stress management skills and possess fast reaction times to be able to respond to events and emergencies that can occur during the course of a flight,” he said.

The event at the New Providence Community Centre, Chaz explained, is all about bridging the gaps between generations and promoting sustainability as well as looking at how sustainable development can be implemented in the Bahamas.

The event will include food vendors, art displays from students, and live entertainment from artists such as Preston Hanna, steel drum player Meghan Smith, and David Burrows a section leader for the PVAMU marching band, as well as singer Giovanni Robinson, who will perform music from his debut album, “Modern Boy”.

Panel discussions will include topics such as “Sustainable and Healthy Eating in the Bahamas”, “Improving Your Environmental Footprint”, “Improving Your Energy Efficiency at Home” and the plastic ban.

Chaz said the Bahamas’ newly implemented plastic ban is a great start towards environmental

consciousness and definitely a step in the right direction.

“It shows the government’s initial buy-in to significant changes in consumer behaviour that currently have adverse affects on our environment.”

Chaz also encourages people to focus on the the three ‘Rs’: reduce, reuse and recycle.

Some suggestions to achieve this are to reduce electricity usage by switching to LED lights, and purchasing energy saving appliances, buying enough rather than in excess and investing in dual use items as well as recycling as much as possible.

Parents can talk to their children as well and plan fun, environmentalfriendly experiences such as planting trees.

Artists band together to show love for hurricane victims

By JEFFARAH GIBSON Tribune Features Writer jgibson@tribunemedia.net WHILE some Bahamians are eager to embrace what 2020 might have in store for them, others are still picking up the pieces of their lives that were destroyed by Hurricane Dorian.

With so many people still in need of healing, solace and comfort, the musical duo Kairos decided they wanted to do something to help uplift the Grand Bahamians and Abaconians impacted by the monster storm in September. So they put their personal projects on hold to band together with other artists for a new song and music video.

Kairos have joined forces with Wendi, Dyson Knight, Chase Fernander and Sleepy Lexx & PDillon for the track “This Is Love”.

Kairos is the Bahamas’ newest female duo. The group consists of business partners Angel Alei and Zaafira. They have been working behind the scenes on their music, gearing up for a few huge releases, but felt compelled to postpone those projects to work on “This Is Love”.

“I did this collaboration because I felt the need to have a voice in the task of maintaining some sensitivity and compassion for people that experienced unexpected and unavoidable

loss...due to Hurricane Dorian,” said Dyson Knight of the famous Baha Men. “The direction of this song won my support because it spoke to the pain as well as the promise of a unified front to comfort and restore the strength of a people without trivialising their plight.”

“This Is Love” is a song that Kairos began writing in the wake of the devastating storm. They reached out to their friends in the music industry, to each bring their own feelings on what happened to the table. The result is an emotionally

provoking song. “‘This Is Love’ is a beautiful lament for the tragedy that was Hurricane Dorian. What drew me to wanting to do this song is the fact that one of the artists survived the tragedy. So being a part of this project felt closer to home. I’m happy the song turned out so beautifully and I hope that we can all cry and grieve together, and push forward in love,” said

award-winning recording artist Wendi.

The song showcases a vast variety of emotions and perspectives, but none hits home more than the contribution of PDillon, a rapper and Abaco native who actually lived through the storm. The track was produced by brothers Yontell and Yonzell Clare.

“Working on this song was the perfect way to vent all my feelings about the storm. As a survivor, this song really resonated with me because it shows that we really need to come together and show love,” said PDillon.

An official shoot for the music video took place on December 14.

There was also a candle light vigil and paper lantern release for the launch event.

It is the artists’ intention to bring hope, a sense of closure to the family and friends left behind to mourn the tragic losses caused by Dorian.

Kairos have also renewed the call for the public to show up and do their part for the emotional healing for the country.

Join the ARTribe!

By ALESHA CADET Tribune Features Writer acadet@tribunemedia.net THE year kicks off at the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas (NAGB) with the launch of an after-school art club for teens.

The ARTribe initiative invites budding creatives, grades eight to 12, who are interested in exploring the arts outside the classroom to join in a safe, inclusive space that has a rich cultural history. The club launches on Monday, January 13, at 4pm with a meet and greet. “ As the leading art institution for The Bahamas, we are actively nurturing and provoking a healthy cultural ecosystem, thus empowering multiple generations of Bahamians,” said Blake Fox, NAGB education and administrative assistant.

He said the after-school programme for teens is a way to engage a wider audience. Mr Fox said the NAGB exists to educate, uplift, and inspire. He said the team is excited to add ARTribe to its line-up of programmes, contemporary exhibitions, workshops for teachers and students and its mixed media art summer camp.

Mr Fox said the ARTribe comes at the right time, with increasing demand by parents, teachers, and students for extracurricular activities where teens can have more dynamic learning experiences.

“The NAGB is working toward becoming more and more accessible because the museum belongs to the Bahamian people. We want to further instil in young people a sense of pride and ownership in the museum. Our overall goal for ARTribe is to create a lifelong relationship and deep connection between teens and museums, art, and culture,” said Mr Fox. With ARTribe, he said they are ensuring students will develop a strong sense of identity through meaningful art and cultural experiences. They will also gain

knowledge of career paths in art.

“We want teens to become ambassadors for the museum— spreading the word in their community and engaging more people.

Ultimately we want to reach as many students as possible by branching out and establishing clubs in schools in Nassau and eventually on the Family Islands.

Of course those are more longterm goals. For the short-term impacts, ARTribe will

develop leadership and other personal skills through meaningful participation in the arts. The participants will be able to spend time making artwork in a safe, inclusive, and creative space, allowing them to have something tangible to be proud of,” said Mr Fox. Through the programme’s duration, participants will get to meet established and emerging Bahamian artists, they will get a peek into the ins and outs of running an institution like the NAGB by interacting with museum staff, and discovering careers in the art world, and have access to art materials to create work of their own.

“Even for those who may not want to make art, they can choose to focus on research and investigation of an artist or an art theme.

They will also have the opportunity to work on community related projects in conjunction with our existing mural programme. This programme will be geared toward their individual interests, so everyone can truly engage,” said Mr Fox. He said they have chosen the grade group eight to 12 because young people are the future of museums and it’s crucial to nurture relationships with young people.

He believes young people are curious and starting to think about important life decisions such as careers, and the NAGB wants them to explore the possibilities of working in the arts.

“Art really is everywhere — from the apps that we use on our phones to the clothes we wear — and the world would be a much less inspiring place without it. Furthermore, art can be used to address social and cultural issues so we see the significance of giving students the tools and resources to be a part of that movement in The Bahamas. As an artist and art educator myself, I have experienced how valuable and rewarding art can be. It encourages healthy self-expression, builds confidence, develops problem-solving skills and hones critical thinking skills.

“These skills are increasingly sought after, so even if a student feels like they might not want to be a full-time artist, it’s critical that they grow these creative skills so they can be at an advantage as they begin making professional strides,” said Mr Fox. The Kalypso Kid

THE JAPANESE cult anime “Dragon Ball Z” inspired Bahamian Stephen Catalano to pursue his passion for art.

IT was when he saw Trunks defeat Freeza with his sword on animated television show “Dragon Ball Z” at the age of five that Stephen Catalano was inspired to become an artist.

He told Tribune Weekend he must have drawn that scene a hundred times, just on that day alone.

He knew right there and then he wanted to do that forever.

“Even back then, I was drawing events in sequence.

I wanted to tell a story, not just draw.

It wasn’t until later I started paying attention to story structure, and realised there were a lot of different ways to tell a story.

Hopefully, this and future books will show what I’ve learned,” he said while sharing the vision for his new comic book, Kalypso Kid. Mr Catalano said this book is the beginning of a story about the titular hero, “Kalypso Kid”. He is a quiet, jaded boy who doesn’t like that he can’t use his superpowers freely, due to strict laws. Meanwhile, the only superheroes who can use their powers legally have no use for them, because there are no supervillains left.

However, by chance, he gets into a scuffle with an old supervillain, and has to be saved by these old superheroes. Now, circumstances have made him a target for various supervillains, forcing him into the superhero world. Essentially, he got what he wanted, but at the cost of his normal life.

“The motivation for creating the book really started with a joke my cousin made about Big Belly Man being a Bahamian superhero. I knew I had to make my own Bahamian superhero to fight alongside

Big Belly Man, and that ended up being Kalypso Kid. From there, I started thinking of a Bahamian ‘Justice League’, and the story slowly evolved from there,” said Mr Catalano. He went on to say the new book venture is a first and, in a word, it feels “wild” to have completed and see his drawings professionally printed.

“People I don’t know are going to read them. It’s a dream come true, and much like Kalypso Kid himself, I feel like I’m being thrust into a new world. Ask me again in three months, and I’ll notice a flaw on every page. Now, though, I think it’s perfect. I guess most artists are like that,” said Mr Catalano.

When asked if there was a specific message in the book that he wants readers to grasp, Mr Catalano said he tries to not mold his stories around one specific message, though messages do come through, naturally. As for realism, one idea he wants to play with down the road is “What would real Bahamians do if they had superpowers?”

He said comic book stories tend to revolve around heroic people, but most normal people aren’t heroic. “People act selfish day to day. If you throw super strength and fire breath into the mix, do you really expect there to be an increase of heroism? I don’t think so, and I want to play around with that idea,” said Mr Catalano.

In a recent book launch at Gypsy Books & Tea, Mr Catalano said what he looked forward to most, was having people interested in his story, as there is no point in having a story without people to tell it to.

A musical farewell to the Yuletide season

DUNDAS PRODUCTION SHOWCASES TALENTED TEENS THE holidays might have come and gone, but for those wanting to hold on to the Yuletide season for just a little while longer, “The Joy of Christmas”, a new musical, is set to debut at the Dundas Theatre for Performing Arts this Saturday, featuring a talented crop of fresh faces in a kaleidoscope of music, drama and dance.

“This production is a dream God placed on my heart for many years,” said playwright and producer Shuree Munnings.

“My daughter, Alena, sings and I am constantly on the look-out for venues and platforms. In Nassau, the venues accommodating teens are limited and the platforms are usually given to bigger stars. Outside a school setting, teen talent is either hidden somewhere in the background or utilised as warm-up acts which hardly anyone sees.”

“Alena has many talented friends, so this production is done with the intention to create a platform for young singers, actors, actresses and those who love to perform.

“Talent is everywhere in this country. I love children, music and drama.

This production blends the three together.”

It took a herculean effort on the part of the planning committee, consisting of Munnings’ family members and trusted friends, to pull the show together within a short space of time. They commenced work in mid-November.

To gain greater insight into the inner workings of theatre production, Mrs Munnings reached out to well-known personalities in the entertainment industry for advice.

Her network included Terez Davis Nixon, Michelle Butler, Simmone Bowe and Angelo Martin. They helped to bring her and the team up to speed.

“The teacher in me wanted it to be a learning experience for the students. I wanted them to receive critiques and advice from those who are a part of the industry in which these teens aspire to enter,” Mrs Munnings noted.

Accomplished performers such as Adrian Edgecombe, Shenique Ferguson and Candace Bostwick served as guest coaches providing invaluable feedback to the teens.

“The cast welcomed the instruction and made further adjustments based on the advice they received,” said Mrs Munnings. “The talent at that age is unbelievable and that’s why I

would do it all over again in a heartbeat to create this unique platform for them.”

That’s not to say the production didn’t face its share of challenges. It nearly didn’t come to fruition.

“It was just time to get out of my own way and try one of my ideas that God placed within my heart,” said Mrs Munnings. “I always feared failure, but I said to myself the year is almost over, and I am going to give it my all and try, even if three people show up at least I tried.”

Other obstacles included money and timing.

“I did this out of my pocket with support from faithful family and friends. There were costs related to venue, musicians, refreshments

for the cast, advertisements, sound engineering, costumes, props and set design, so many little things that you never really understand until you are a part of the process,” Mrs Munnings explained.

“It was also challenging holding practices during the busy holiday season. It was a stressful time. Most of the cast worked or had other productions to which they were obligated. Remember, they are teens, so they don’t drive. Our parents were faithful and supportive but there were times we had to pick the teens up.”

For her cast of unknown gems, the English/literature teacher hopes bigger opportunities emerge for them in the wake of the musical’s debut.

“I want them to be even better performers than when they began. From this journey, I think they all possess a better understanding of the commitment it takes to make it to the next level. More importantly, I want them to l feel that they do have a place and future in the arts,” she said.

“In me, I hope they see that no matter how long it takes, one should pursue their dreams and develop their talents because it is God’s gift to us, to be used for His glory.”

For Mrs Munnings, her directorial debut has been a unique, invigorating experience.

“I have whole new lease on life.

This is a great way to start off the new year,” said the married mother of three. “I have never felt so alive.

4 tablespoons softened butter 1 large Eggland’s Best egg 1 teaspoon coarse Himalayan sea salt 1/4 teaspoon HASH brown and chive goat cheese quiche pepper and, right, actress and chef Haylie Duff.

1/2 teaspoon Spanish Smoked Paprika 3 tablespoons chopped fresh chives 1 and 1/2 cups whole milk Greek yogurt 1 4-5 ounce package room temperature goat cheese 1 teaspoon Himalayan sea salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 11 large Eggland’s Best eggs 1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives

Preparation Preheat oven to 350. Using 10-inch springform pan, butter bottom and sides. Line only sides with parchment paper, then butter the paper.

In bowl, mix dry hash browns, butter, egg, salt, pepper, paprika and chives.

Pat into bottom and sides of springform, making sure bottom crust is not too thick.

Place on rimmed baking sheet and bake 20 minutes or until crispy and browned.

In large bowl, beat softened goat cheese, yogurt, salt and pepper. Slowly beat in all 11 eggs until mixed.

When crust comes out of oven, pour egg mixture into crust and bake approximately 45-50 minutes.

Sides will be firm and center almost firm.

Take springform side off, peel off parchment paper and serve.

4. Brighten up your sides Boost the freshness of your meal with a colorful veggie or fruit salad – or both! The kids love fresh seasonal fruit and veggies, and sometimes we serve them with some fresh whipping cream or flavored yogurt.

Jeffarah says: “What is this drab look that Cyndi Lauper is rocking? Well, not rocking, because it’s so dull and boring. It’s like she’s attending the crypt keeper’s funeral. She even looks sad wearing this ridiculous getup! The most interesting thing about her look is the yellow quasi mohawk.”

Cara says: “This colour is lovely. That pretty much is the one nice thing I can say about this look. My biggest problem is that it’s just so shapeless. I am not a fan of the ill fitting mens’ wear trend. And the effect of the oversized sleeves are a bit lost since the whole thing is so baggy. And the bralette, I just don’t like it, although I guess it is her pop of colour.”

Jeffarah says: “I am in love with the colour of this suit. But the overall ensemble is extremely confusing.

What is that on her arms? And with all the fashion tape that is available, why did she choose to wear a bralette? This does not work at all.”

Cara says: “Her pantsuit is way better fitting than Alicia’s, but I still feel it’s an unflattering look. The combination of the long hair, the bangs and the bow at the neck just makes her look so crowded. I’m also not fond of the colour on her; that is a lot of peach!”

Jeffarah says: “Suits are definitely in and this look could have easily been a win, however, Jameela missed with this hairstyle. I know it’s currently sort of her signature ’do, but the bangs just look to heavy. It’s just too much hair for such a high-necked ensemble.

Better luck next time.”

Cara says: “Taylor usually really brings it on the red carpet. So I am really disappointed with this outfit. It’s cute, but I just feel it’s one of the most boring outfits I’ve seen her wear. It actually looks comfy and would be quite stylish for use regular Joes..errr...Janes, but not for someone of Taylor’s statue.”

Showbiz mourns losses, from Luke Perry to Doris Day THE world of entertainment said goodbye to some legends in 2019 — from ebullient musical comedy star Carol Channing to Carol Spinney, the man behind Big Bird.

There were farewells for British actor Albert Finney and US TV pioneers Valerie Harper and Diahann Carroll. Hollywood paused to remember acting icons Peggy Lipton and Doris Day as well as Peter Mayhew, the towering actor, who played Chewbacca. “Boyz N the Hood” director John Singleton died in April after a stroke.

SOCIAL media celebrity Tardar Sauce, better known as Grumpy Cat, died on May 14, 2019 at age seven.

LUKE PERRY, of Beverly Hills, 90210 and Riverdale, died of a stroke on March 4, 2019, at age 52.

In 2019, the box office belonged to Disney

By JAKE COYLE AP Film Writer EVERY movie year offers up a parade of hits and flops. But in 2019, no winner was in the same galaxy as the Walt Disney Co. And the biggest loser might have been anyone less thrilled about the box-office domination of franchise films.

When the year closed out on Tuesday, the top ten films in US and Canada theatres were all intellectual property-backed movies. That, in itself, isn’t new. It’s the third year in a row that the year’s ten biggest ticketsellers have all been sequels, remakes and superhero films.

But in today’s IP-driven movie world, one studio is in a league of its own. In 2019, Disney dominated American movie-going more than any studio ever has before — roughly 38 percent of all domestic movie-going.

The year’s top five films were all Disney movies, and it played a hand in the sixth. Disney’s Marvel Studios produced the Sony Pictures release “Spider-Man: Far From Home.”

Disney banked about $13bn in worldwide box office in 2019, including a record number of $1bn releases.

Once “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” ($724.8m through Sunday) inevitably reaches that milestone, it will mark the studio’s seventh such $1b movie in 2019. The others were: “Avengers: Endgame” (the highest grossing release ever, not accounting for inflation, with $2.8bn), “The Lion King,” “Captain Marvel,” “Aladdin,” “Toy Story 4” and “Frozen II.” Disney’s unprecedented market share includes films from 20th Century Fox, the 84-year-old studio that

Disney gobbled up in March in a $71.3bn acquisition.

The upper echelons of the box office may be stratospheric, but the lower realms — where critics’ scores are rotten and word of mouth is faster than opening weekend — are dismal.

The movies are increasingly a zero-sum game.

You’re either “The Lion King” or you’re “Cats.”

Disney’s considerable role in today’s movie-going hasn’t been without critics. They have lamented its mega-blockbusters as products, not cinema. Before Martin Scorsese’s criticisms of Disney’s Marvel movies sparked headlines, he lamented the monopolising of the multiplex, disturbed by the sight of “Avengers: Endgame” playing on 11 of a theatre’s 12 screens.

If the big-screen experience is narrowing, the small screen is expanding. Streaming services proliferated in 2019 with the launch of Apple TV Plus (although it pushed back its first big movie release ) and Disney Plus. Amazon also reshaped its release strategy, shortening the theatrical window for some of its movies to just two weeks. Netflix rolled out its most ambitious release

slate, including a host of awards contenders, led by Scorsese’s “The Irishman” and Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story,” that played in only limited theatres. The so-called streaming wars will only grow in 2020 when NBCUniversal launches its service, Peacock, and WarnerMedia debuts HBO Max. While some may see a downturn in ticket sales as indicative of streaming’s impact, John Fithian, the president and chief executive of the National Association of Theater Owners, believes streaming is disruptive to broadcast TV, cable and home markets like DVDs, but not to movie theatres.

“This may sound counter-intuitive, but with the launch of Disney-Plus, HBO Max and Peacock, we’re more confident of the symbiotic relationship of streaming and theatrical than we were before,” says Fithian. “The people who stream also go to the movies a lot.”

The year’s most glaring bombs included bold bids at technological innovation (“Gemini Man”), mishandled franchise finales (“Dark Phoenix”), remakes that failed to connect (“Charlie’s Angels”), prestige dramas doomed by controversy (“Richard Jewell”), toy movies that didn’t click (“Playmobil: The Movie”) and, you know, “Cats.”

But some Hollywood executives point to successes suggesting a vibrant medium. Jordan Peele’s “Us,” for Universal, was the highest grossing original movie. Others like Lionsgate’s “Knives Out,” Fox’s “Ford v Ferrari,” STX’s “Hustlers” and Sony’s “Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood” were also both critical and global hits. Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” and Lulu Wang’s “The Farewell” gave the art house a boost.

James Bond, Wonder Woman and The Rock are coming in 2020. But greater volatility may be on the way, too.

The closing decade was an ever-shifting parade of fashion

By LEANNE ITALIE AP Entertainment Writer NEW YORK (AP) — Lady Gaga wore meat and Rihanna went naked, practically. Kate Middleton delivered royal wedding opulence and Billy Porter went viral in a tuxedo gown.

There was the much-coveted Olivia Pope white coat, Lupita Nyong’o’s perfect powder blue Oscar gown and Karl Lagerfeld’s embrace of athleisure.

The closing decade was ever-shifting in fashion. The most special moments among fashion editors had Rihanna and Beyonce top of mind as trendsetters, along with the Duchess of Cambridge, the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, and former first lady Michelle Obama.

Rachel Torgerson, senior fashion editor at Cosmopolitan, said it might seem easy to overlook the decade of 2010 to 2020 fashion-wise. Lady Gaga’s raw meat dress in 2010 at the MTV Video Music Awards was a much talked about exception.

“More definitive moments came before — the grunge-y ‘90s, the Paris Hilton-drenched early aughts,” Torgerson said. “But the truth is there were some majorly iconic sartorial instances that changed us forever during this time.”

We’ll start with Rihanna.

“My jaw dropped to the floor when Rihanna sparkled onto the stage in an Adam Selman Swarovksi crystal ‘naked dress’ to receive her CFDA style icon award,” said Joyann King, executive editorial director of HarpersBazaar.com. “It was as beautiful as it was provocative and began a trend that continues to rule the red carpet and our social feeds.”

Laurel Pantin, fashion features director of InStyle, agreed: “I’ll never forget it. In my dreams, that’s what I look like and that’s what I’m wearing.”

donned Givenchy in another barely there look, a long sheer design that relied on coverage from strategically placed embroidery and a smattering of sparkles, said Andrea Lavinthal, style and beauty director for People.

“It was somehow even more naked than all the other naked dresses that night,” she said.

Duchess Kate wore the house of McQueen to marry Prince William in 2011, more than a year after Alexander McQueen’s death. The lace and ivory satin gown included a pinched-in bodice inspired by Victorian corsetry, a signature of McQueen, but it also evoked the wedding look of Grace Kelly. It was designed by his successor, Sarah Burton.

“Literally every bride wanted to look like her then, and many still do,” Torgerson said. “People are still requesting lookalikes.”

The same interest followed Duchess Meghan into matrimony. The American actress wed Prince Harry in 2018 dressed in a boat-necked, long-sleeve stunner by Claire Waight Keller of Givenchy.

“In this decade, not only one but two of the UK’s spotlight princesses got married, which left the world pondering about who these women would choose to design their momentous wedding dresses,” said Shilpa Prabhakar Nadella, fashion market director for Glamour. “Both have become style icons in their own right.”

As style icons go, few had as much impact as Obama, who caused dresses and other attire to sell out simply by putting them on and was a big booster of both fashion and diverse designers.

Her choices often made headlines.

Lindsay Peoples Wagner, editor in chief of Teen Vogue, noted a particular Obama moment, this one by designer Tracy Reese, a rare African American woman among top designers. It was the pink sleeveless dress with specks of gold brocade that Obama wore for her speech at the Democratic National Convention in 2012.

“It was a historic moment of two iconic women coming together,” Peoples Wagner said. “I can still remember how the dress shimmered as she walked on that stage.”

Like Obama, Beyonce served a heaping plate of style throughout the decade. There was her larger-thanlife black hat and layered necklaces of Swarovski crystals, leather and gems in “Formation,” from her groundbreaking “Lemonade” visual album. For her September 2018 Vogue cover, she was photographed by Tyler Mitchell in a huge floral headdress by Phil John Perry for Rebel Rebel. It was stunning

and also historic: Mitchell became the first black photographer to shoot a cover for the magazine.

“The photos were so dynamic and powerful,” Peoples Wagner said.

Rihanna, too, has endured. Her bright yellow cape gown by Chinese couturier Guo Pei won the 2015 Met Gala and launched a thousand omelette memes, Hyland said. Pei told Fashionista.com: “Only women who have the confidence of a queen could wear it.”

Literary Lives | Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) part one

the early years of a master artist Sir Christopher Ondaatje writes in awe of the prolific Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramist, stage designer, poet and playwright, regarded as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.

P

ablo Picasso was born and baptised Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Jean Nepomuceno Maria de los Remedios Cipriano de las Santisima Trinidad Ruiz y Picasso on October 2, 1881, in Málaga, Spain. The name “Picasso” actually comes from Liguria in north-western Italy, whose capital is Genoa.

There was a portrait painter there named Matteo Picasso (1794-1879). No one has actually traced a direct ancestry, but it is possible that Picasso’s heritage can be traced back to Tommaso Picasso (1728-1813), whose son Giovanni Battista was Pablo Picasso’s great-great grandfather. Picasso’s maternal great-grandfather moved to Spain around 1807. However, Picasso had never claimed an Italian heritage. He was always Spanish.

Picasso’s father was an artist who specialised in wildlife – mostly birds and animals. He was a professor of art at the School of Craft and a curator

of the local Málaga museum.

Even as a young boy, seven years old, Picasso showed amazing aptitude for figurative drawing. He received basic training for figure drawing and oil painting from his father – an academic artist who taught him to copy, to draw from plaster casts and live models.

Picasso was immediately obsessed. The family moved to A Coruña in 1891 when Picasso’s father got a job as a professor at the School of

Fine Arts. The story is told that when Picasso’s father saw his son’s drawing over his unfinished sketch of a pigeon’s body, he noticed the young boy’s superiority and vowed never to draw or paint again.

Four years later Picasso’s young sister Conchita died of diphtheria. The family then moved to Barcelona which Picasso always claimed was his true home. He was thirteen years old when he was unexpectedly admitted to the

Academy where his father was teaching. His curious talent could not be ignored and although the young boy lacked discipline he bonded well with the other students. He argued constantly with his father – mostly about artistic style. His creative talent was boundless.

When he was sixteen Picasso’s father and uncle decided to send Picasso to Madrid’s Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando – the country’s foremost art

However, he hated formal instruction and refused to go to classes. Instead, Madrid had other attractions and he spent hours in the Prado Museum studying paintings by Diego Velázquez, Francisco Goya, and Francisco Zurbarán. He

was particularly fascinated with the stylised works of El Greco with his long limbs, vibrant colours and mystical landscapes. By then, 1897, he had already painted his sister Lola in The First Communion (1896), and in the same year Portrait of Aunt Pepa – a vigorous dramatic painting that heralded the young painter’s unique talent.

Determined to break barriers in art Picasso, while still admiring El Greco, ToulouseLautrec and the Norwegian Edvard Munch, painted landscapes in violent colours but never strayed too far from real life portraits. He made his first trip to Paris in 1900 and met the journalist Max Jacob with whom he shared a room.

Jacob slept at night while Picasso slept during the day.

These were poverty stricken desperate times and they were sometimes reduced to burning art works to keep the simple room warm. Picasso lived mostly in Madrid in 1901, illustrating the magazine Arte Joven with critical cartoons.

He signed his works “Picasso” (his mother’s maiden name).

Late in 1901, while dividing his time between Spain and Paris, Picasso embarked on a series of paintings depicting prostitutes, beggars, and poor

people in taverns. They were depressing subjects and his use of blue and blue-green eventually came to be known as his “Blue Period”. It lasted four years and included posthumous portraits of his dead friend Carlos Casagemas (La Vie, 1903) now in the Cleveland Museum of Art, The Blindman’s Meal (1903) now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and The Frugal Repast (1904), also of a blindman and an emaciated woman – recurring Picasso subjects.

Picasso’s Rose Period (1904-1906) reflected a much happier period in his life using a lighter tone, utilising orange and pink colours and featuring circus people, acrobats and harlequins – with checkered patterned clothing that

became a personal symbol for Picasso. He had met Fernande Olivier, a Bohemian artist who became his mistress and contributed much to his more positive outlook on life.

She featured in many of his paintings of the Rose Period which began to be collected by the Americans Leo and Gertrude Stein who lived in Paris. Picasso painted portraits of her, and she began exhibiting his drawings and paintings in her informal Salon. It was in her Salon that Picasso met the artist Henri Matisse.

They were to become lifelong friends and competitors. Stein, her family, and other American art collectors, were to have a significant influence on the career of Picasso.

In 1907 Picasso made another important career decision when he joined Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler’s art gallery in Paris. Kahnweiler was a German historian and collector who became one of

the most powerful art dealers of the 20th century. He was the first to promote Picasso and Georges Braque, as well as André Derain, Kees Van Dongen, Fernand Léger, Juan Gris, and Maurice de Vlaminck. Influenced by African art, Picasso painted Les Demoiselles d’Avignon in 1907, but did not exhibit this work publicly until ten years later. It was not openly accepted by his artistic friends who had come to live and work in Montparnasse. Nude with Raised Arms (1907) and Three Women (1908) were more formally accepted and praised, and led to the Cubist period that he developed with the painter Georges Braque.

These stylized paintings, many similar in both size and shape, using monochrome brownish and neutral colours, were championed by the dealer Kahnweiler and led to the Cubist period which started in 1909 and lasted for ten years.

There were two types of cubism: analytic where both Picasso and Braque analyzed objects in terms of their shapes. Synthetic cubism followed with a further development. Pieces of wallpaper, magazines, and even newspapers were pasted into compositions and marked the very first use of collage in fine art. Picasso depicted highly geometric objects like a guitar, or a pipe, or a glass in his paintings. It is possible that his experimentation heralded a return to a more classical theme.

While living in Montmartre and Montparnasse Picasso entertained some distinguished friends: André Breton, poet Guillaume Apollinaire, writer Alfred Jarry as well as his patron Gertrude Stein, who started collecting his paintings and drawings.

He was slowly acquiring some fame – and money. He left his mistress Fernande Olivier for Marcelle Humbert whom he called Eva Gouel. She featured in many of his cubist paintings, and he was distraught when she died young of tuberculosis in 1915.

Picasso was 34 years old at the outbreak of the First World War and was living in Avignon. He continued to paint, unlike his French compatriots who had enlisted in the army. His work took on a darker, more sombre tone and his life changed, with dramatic consequences. His contract with Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler ended when he left Paris, and he temporarily established a new relationship with Léonce Rosenberg.

After the loss of Eva Gouel Picasso became enamoured in 1916 with Gaby Lespinasse – a twenty seven year old cabaret dancer who was also involved with an American poet and engraver Herbert Lespinasse – whose name she used. She eventually married and left Picasso who had kept the affair secret from his patron Gertrude Stein – probably because the affair started when Eva Gouel was ill.

Towards the end of World War I, Picasso became involved with Serge

HEAD of young man, 1905 Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. He had made many new friends in Paris – notably Jean Cocteau, Jean Hugo, and Juan Gris. In the summer of 1918 Picasso married Olga Khokhlova, a ballerina with Serge Diaghilev’s troupe for whom he was designing a ballet, Erik Satie’s Parade, in Rome. They spent their honeymoon in Biarritz in the villa of the Chilean art patron Eugenia Errázuriz.

Returning to Paris after his honeymoon, Picasso badly needed money to support his new wife and her expensive tastes. He was introduced to the French-Jewish art dealer Paul Rosenberg (no relation to Léonce Rosenberg) and there began a trusted close relationship that lasted until the outbreak of World War II. As part of the arrangement Rosenberg rented an apartment in Paris, next to his own house, and at his expense.

Olga Khokhlova introduced Picasso to French high society and a formal way of life that grated on Picasso’s bohemian tastes. The couple had a son Paulo and lived through constant conflict for the next nine years, while he was working for Diaghilev, until in 1929 he met the seventeen year old Maria-Thérèse Walter and started a secret affair with her.

Olga would feature in many of Picasso’s paintings and although they separated the marriage only ended in 1955 when Khokhlova died. Picasso refused a divorce as he did not want to agree to an equal division of property and wealth.

His long-standing affair with Marie Thérèse lasted forty six years and they had a daughter Maya in 1935. She lived in the vain hope that he would marry her – but he never did.

She hanged herself four years after he died in 1973. Picasso’s career and many infidelities would enter a new triumphant phase where he was at the height of his creative powers, producing not only the costumes and sets for Diaghilev’s Ballet Russes: Parade, and Tricone, but some of his most important sculpture and paintings. They were tumultuous years, with Picasso torn between married respectability with the ambitious Russian ballerina Olga Khokhlova – his first wife, and the erotic passion of his mistress, MarieThérèse Walter.

“Picasso’s choice of Paul Rosenberg as his representative was a sensible one, even though he had none of the qualities that distinguished his pre-war dealer D.H. Kahnweiler. Kahnweiler was unquestionably the most intelligent, farsighted and scrupulous dealer of his generation. He had an intuitive eye and an instinctive understanding of modernism. By 1914 he had Braque, Léger, Gris, as well as Picasso, under contract ... Unfortunately, Kahnweiler’s decision to spend the war in Switzerland and leave his vast stock to be appropriated by the French state as enemy property had

so infuriated Picasso that he refused to have anything to do with him when he returned to Paris. This fight with Kahnweiler is what necessitated the alliance with Rosenberg.” - A Life of Picasso, John Richardson, 2007 Rosenberg was an enormously successful dealer, deeply committed to his artists who included Delacroix, Ingres and Corot, as well as the Post Impressionists. He was hardworking, and totally focused on the art markets.

Picasso and Rosenberg never had a written contract. It was a matter of mutual trust whixh lasted for twenty one years.

Picasso gave Rosenberg a right of first refusal on all current work – an arrangement backed by Georges Wildenstein. Wildenstein represented his work in America, and Rosenberg in Europe. However Wildenstein remained in the background. Rosenberg was the dealer publicly associated with Picasso.

“By the end of 1918, Paul Rosenberg had paid Picasso 55,000 francs for the portrait of his wife and a group of lesser recent works. At first sales were slow, largely because the prices Rosenberg asked were much higher than those that his preceding dealers had asked. Over the next few years, these prices would soar. So would Picasso’s earnings, thanks to his wisdom in not tying himself down, as standard contracts did, to a fixed rate per canvas for a fixed period of time. The “contract” permitted Picasso to raise the price that Rosenberg paid per canvas as the value of his work on the market increased ... I

n his 1897 book, In Sunny Isles, George Lester, who was one of the Methodist ministers in The Bahamas in1891, writes not solely about The Bahamas, but encompasses

several islands that lie between North and South America, and he presents an interesting view of The Bahamas, which he describes as lying “as far westward from England as does New York and as far to

the south as do Calcutta and Canton, The most northerly island is at least 600 miles from the southern extremity of the group”.

As for inter-island travel “a voyage from Green Turtle, Abaco, to Mathew Town, Inagua, would require twice the time occupied in crossing the Atlantic in a Cunarder... the schooners, which ply between the Out Islands and the chief town, are crafts varying from 30 to 80 tons and are not of a kind to make ‘life on the ocean wave’ an enviable experience”.

The only steam communication was a fortnightly service of mail steamers from New York, which called at Nassau on the way to Cuba. During the winter “tourist” season, a service between Nassau and Florida had increased the number of visitors “to these Sunny Isles”.

“Most of the islands are small, Andros, the largest and least known, contains fully a third of the entire acreage of the group, while Spanish Wells only boasts an area equal to a moderate-sized English farm.”

“It is customary to say that about 20 of these islands are inhabited ... as a matter of fact, about twice that number are inhabited. The government returns ... group the cays (on which the people mostly reside) with the neighbouring islands, hence the discrepancy.”

Houses were described as sometimes built of native stone but, more frequently of wood and Lester was impressed by the thatch roofs and the considerable skill of the thatchers.

Pet friendly means just that: being friendly with other people’s animals, friendly with companion animals, showing respect, concern and kindness. Why can we not do that in the Bahamas? What is the mental roadblock that makes this so difficult for so many people in the Bahamas, and while I am at it, why do people assume that if you love animals it means that you do not like humans.

Why does one preclude the other?

So my dream for my Bahamaland, my New Year’s wish, is that we can become a kinder place for everybody, human and animal, that we can smile more and hate less. Let us reach out to each other in a warm gesture of friendship, respect each other, love one another. We all deserve kindness and consideration. 2020 is a new decade, for what that is worth. It is time to lay down the bad feelings and aggression and pull together to make it better for us all, human, furry, feathered and scaly...

Make us better for 2020, smile at a potcake and be nice to your neighbour!
