All across the world people that never would have intentionally crossed paths, joined forces against our common enemy [COVID] for the greater good.”

Witnessing this, for Charlie, really brought into perspective how much our “delay in healing mentally, emotionally, and financially, is a direct reflection of our lack of emphasis on togetherness.”

When discussing collective responsibility, Charlie states “I strongly believe that even though we didn’t initiate separation, we play a stronger part than some may accept in SUSTAINING it.” Charlie continues, “ ...if we embrace the power of a ‘village’ that’s invested in the same positive goal(s), not only will we bloom where we were planted, we will flourish in record speed.”

The concept of looking, sounding or acting black was born out of the minstrel shows of the 1920’s. Initially performed by white actors with blackened faces minstral shows started in the 1830’s and became famous in the U.S. from 1840-1880.

Although initially prohibited from performing in them, minstrel shows as entertainment became the only type of theatrical performance that Black men could do to make a “decent living” and support their families after the Civil War.

Freeman Gosden (‘Amos’) and Charles Correll (‘Andy’) were white actors familiar with minstrel traditions and created a wildly popular radio series in the 1920’s based on vocal caricature of “a couple of colored characters” that fascinated radio listeners throughout the Midwest and spread across the USA. Many argue that some of today’s popular media, TV, radio and ‘Black personalities’ are extensions of the foundation established by Amos ‘n’ Andy.
