MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR PATRICIA RITTER, PHD, CCC-SLP

I always avoided roller coasters at amusement parks growing up; but I found myself riding one without a choice the past 2 years.

Powering through our second year of a global pandemic, the flexibility and adaptability of the entire TLC community has allowed both the organization and the individuals we serve to experience success in the face of an unpredictable and rapidly changing world.

TLC’s success is a result of a cohesive community and strong donors who supported us throughout these challenging years.

Our mission of improving lives and expanding possibilities was fulfilled with great determination; our staff transitioned back and forth between virtual and in-person school, services, and programs. The pandemic taught us how to meet the various needs of the community by learning new ways to operate.

The perseverance of our community strengthened our organization, and we are TLC proud.

We had to delay our much anticipated 70-year TLC and 25-year The Katherine Thomas School gala; with great excitement, we are looking forward to meeting in-person to celebrate our TLC 70+ gala on April 28, 2022! Achieving 70+ years of services in the community and not only surviving but thriving in the face of an extended global pandemic is a testament to the strength and character of our community. We are thrilled to be able to recognize our TLC Champions at the gala and are honored to have Mr. J. Randy Lewis as a keynote speaker.

Mr. Lewis spearheaded the hiring of many individuals with disabilities while an executive at Walgreens, with his life’s work aligning with TLC’s mission and vision.

Our focus on financial sustainability, despite uncertainties, resulted in a positive year. We quickly responded to all funding opportunities, maximizing available funds to end on a good year financially that allows us to strengthen our organization for now and in the future. The generosity of our donors provided a foundation to help guide us through whatever challenges come our way. The TLC community was not immune to the various stressors and hardships; we have endured a higher cost of living, the great resignation, and battled emotional stress and burnout. The giving spirt of our community has helped us rise above the challenges we have faced. Donor support has strengthened our community in multiple ways including support of our staff, adaptable programs, new initiatives, capital costs, and ongoing supports for community health and safety.

We give great thanks to our community for enduring these tumultuous years and responding with loyalty, grace, strength and commitment to TLC and our mission. We look forward to celebrating the spirit of TLC at our gala-the accomplishments, the generous individuals who have supported us through good and bad times, and the people we serve. We feel confident in conquering any new challenges that come our way moving forward, having financial stability because of the kindness and generosity of our community. Finally, we look forward to a year filled with more stability and predictability!

2021 DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHTS OUTPATIENT DEPARTMENT The Occupational Therapy and Speech-Language Departments held a successful in-person summer camp program from June–August 2021.

TLC's Directors of the Testing, Tutoring, and Counseling Department and Speech-Language Pathology Department presented a workshop with Fusion Academy, "Changing the Paradigm of Neurodiversity: Acceptance, Inclusion, and Social Justice."

Speech-Language Pathology Department officially launched off site services and is now delivering therapy and evaluations in three different schools in the area.

The Occupational Therapy and Speech-Language Departments held several free occupational therapy, speech-language, and hearing screenings at multiple private schools.

TESTING, TUTORING, AND COUNSELING DEPARTMENT Dr. Melissa Smith attended a career fair for University of Maryland.

Robyn Davy finished her latest Circle of Security parenting group.

Dr. Kristin Olsen gave a talk on "Resiliency" to Thurgood Marshall PTA. She also wrote an article on transitions for the TLC community.

The Harbor School Social Skills group will begin again in April 2022, run by Charmyn Henderson, MSA, LCPC, Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor.

THE KATHERINE THOMAS SCHOOL The high school's intersession week for 2021 was Social Justice Week. The students followed frameworks from Teaching Tolerance to promote social justice and challenge bias.

The lower/middle school added new components to the curriculum, including certification in the Orton Gillingham Plus program, and an updated core reading program, Open Court.

The Boost program was opened to lower school students.

The support of our community has made it possible to purchase 140 new Chromebooks for the entire KTS community in 2021.

2021 DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHTS THE OUTCOMES SERVICE TLC Outcomes Service began to support those served and employers with more in person one-to-one supports this past year. TLC Outcomes hopes to provide supports in person for all stakeholders that are interested in this service in FY22.

TLC Outcomes staff taught those served in all programs looking for work about the new world of job searching and interviewing virtually.

TLC Outcomes staff provided one-on-one support to individuals served to help them understand the pandemic and teach them about health and safety when out in the community.

In the spring/summer of 2021 TLC Outcomes launched in-person CDS groups for groups of two (2) - four (4) individuals.

In the summer 2021, TLC Outcomes hosted the first summer Pre-ETS program in person since the pandemic began. There were four participants that attended this program. The youth that attended were very pleased with the program as it gave them a chance to be out in the community before going back to school in the fall.

THE FAMILY HEARING CENTER Hearing health support groups continued via Zoom. Susan Yaffe-Oziel, M.M.S., CCC-A Director of The Family Hearing Center facilitated the groups which were held for the Ingleside at King Farm and Asbury Methodist Village communities.

FHC sent out monthly e-newsletters to keep the community updated about hearing research and practice news.

FHC provided an online hearing test campaign (Shoebox).

Widex, alongside with FHC, hosted an online hearing health event in October 2021.

IN THEIR WORDS...TLC CLIENT STORIES Between the ages of 2-4 my son hummed, tapped/drummed, and repeated (echolalia). At age 3 he was officially diagnosed as autistic. Through private therapist and special education schools these issues are no longer a concern. At age 7 he began to display anxiety; at age 10 he was diagnosed with autism and OCD fear of germs. The COVID pandemic sent his OCD into overdrive.

However, the KTS professionals continuously worked with him virtually to alleviate stressors, increase his self regulation, and decrease the obsessive behaviors. The Occupational and Speech Therapists deserve a tremendous “thanks.”

I got my first paid job at a preschool/early education place starting in fall 2021. I had to pass a class at Montgomery College in childcare to apply for this job. It was a lot of hard work. I had a few job interviews. I remembered some of the practice interviews we did in Internship class at KTS, and I practiced more before the interviews. I was so happy to get the job offer. I have been doing well at my job and getting along well with my coworkers. I have fun with the kids and hope to be working there a long time. Other exciting news: One of my drawings was selected to be in the advertisements for an Amazon Prime TV show. They purchased my drawing to be in some of the advertisements and billboards for the show.

I am doing really well at college. I am living independently—in a dorm apartment with four other freshman and I have made a wonderful group of friends. I have been successfully navigating the academic and social rigors of college life, regularly expanding my use of the college supports (such as regularly meeting with my Learning Specialist, instructors and using the Writing Center). I have been using my problem-solving and selfadvocacy skills that I learned at KTS. Some advice that I would tell kids who are about to graduate high school is don’t be afraid to be yourself — use your strategies and your support resources.

Be brave to experience new things in the world…that’s how we become wise. Be kind and loving and patient with yourself and set goals for what you want to do in your life.
