ravel trend watchers suggest that travelers are increasingly tur ning a flight layover into a mini-break of its own, to maximize a vacation and experience somewhere unfamiliar as a break en-route to a final destination. Dubai in the United Arab Emirates fits this profile as an ultra-modern City with a wealth of things to see and experience while being a hub for flights to Asia-Pacific, Europe and Africa. Dubai is full of surprises which a North American traveler would see in shorthand as a mix of the Bahamas, Miami and Beverly Hills with a dash of Las Vegas extravagance thrown in. 24 hours can go very quickly so here are our top must-experience suggestions. See La Perle by Frank Dragone Frank Dragone was the inspiration behind the Vegas show La Reve at the Wynn and has brought his skills to a permanent show held at the W Hotel, Al Habtoor City in Dubai. Even if shopping is not your thing there

is much to do here at the world’s largest indoor shopping mall. It would seem that brands and stores from across the world are present here along with a plethora of cafes and dining. Not to mention there is an aquarium. Seriously. Craig’s 8826 Melrose Avenue West Hollywood Craigs.la Comedian Don Rickles made the quip that “this place is never gonna make it !” while Jeff Ross describes Craig’s quite effectively as “the olive garden for celebrities”. Some restaurants transcend being a place to dine and become a place to simply be – Craig’s is one of them. One of the aims of anyone seeking to ‘make it’ in LA is to secure a table in the centre of Craig’s. In fact, one can probably take a seating location at Craig’s as a barometer reading of where a celebrity is at – rising (table at the back), current hit (front and centre), over-thehype – booth of to one side. The dinner menu ranges from Vegan options to the Grill to seafood, pasta and pizza. Try a Vegan Sausage Pizza (san marzano tomato sauce, vegan sausage, vegan cheese) or a 14oz prime New York Steak. Like Hollywood, Craig’s has something to please everyone, and of course people watching.

WHERE TO STAY

Bellagio Bellagio (bellagio.com) The beautiful Italian-inspired architecture is a spectacle to be seen. Check out the lobby— especially the exquisite glass chandelier of 2,000 vibrant hand-blown glass flowers designed by Dale Chihuly. Request a room in the Spa Tower where you’re steps away from relaxing in a hot tub or a soothing couples massage.

9 PM—THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT There’s probably nothing on earth that can match the pure spectacle of a Vegas show. Marvel at the Baz—A Musical Mash-Up (palazzo. com/baz) at The Palazzo takes three of Australian Director Baz Lurhmann’s movies—Moulin Rouge, Romeo and Juliet, and The Great Gatsby—and combines them into a live music performance where the audience sits amongst the performer’s stage. Super songbirds Jennifer Lopez and Britney Spears continue their runs at Planet Hollywood (caesers.com/planet-hollywood).

Caesars Palace Caesars Palace (caesarspalace.com) The opulent entrance, fountains, Roman statuary, and roaming centurions all add up to the iconic, over-the-top Las Vegas hotel. Attracting superstar entertainers such as Rod Stewart, Elton John, Celine Dione, Mariah Carey and Jerry Seinfeld who wow audiences. Dining options read like a who’s who—Rao’s, Nobu and Mr. Chow is just the start. With accommodations including upgraded Caesars Suites and the addition of new luxury rooms at the Palace Tower it seems there are few excuses to postpone booking.

With vast glass window-walls overlooking The Strip, you will enjoy an unforgettable nightlife experience.

The Palazzo (thepalazzo.com) In a city that thinks big, The Palazzo offers the largest standard size suite on the strip which is almost twice the size of the average hotel room in Las Vegas, providing a beautiful base from which to explore. The Palazzo creators have thought through the relationships needed to build a successful one-stop resort hotel in the center of Las Vegas, Canyon Ranch Spa, high-end retail and designer brands and, of course, a bustling casino.

The Wynn The Wynn (thewynnlasvegas) This resort is a playground for jet-setters, high rollers, and anyone who wants to feel like one. The Wynn and its sister Wynn Encore possess no fewer than thirteen Forbes Five-Star travel awards. Boasting an array of dining, shopping and entertainment options including a new nightclub, Intrigue. Last, but not least, you’ll find the only 18-hole golf course on the strip boasting arguably the highest green fee in the U.S.—one for the golfer’s bucket list.

4 AM—CALL IT A NIGHT Time to pull the curtains closed, hang that “Do Not Disturb” sign and remember there’s a tomorrow. Set the alarm? Never. Remember this is Las Vegas—no one has a clock around here! • OCTOBER 2017 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 37

CLASS MOM: A NOVEL (Henry Holt and Co.) Laurie Gelman’s debut novel Class Mom: A Novel is a clever take on a year in the life of kindergarten class mom, Jen Dixon. Jen is not your typical Kansas City, Missouri mom or a mom in general. She already has two college-age daughters by two different men (probably musicians), and it is her second time around the class mom block with fiveyear-old Max; this time with a husband and father by her side. Though her best friend and PTA President sees her as the “wisest” candidate for the job (or oldest), not all of the other parents agree. Class Mom: A Novel will be available August 1st wherever books are sold.•
