When entrepreneur Arthur Imperatore Sr. established the rst Hudson River ferry crossing between New Jersey and New York City in decades, people predicted a op. โArthurโs Follyโ they called it. Instead, Arthur had the last laugh. By launching the NY Waterway ferry line in 1986, he jumpstarted redevelopment of the languishing industrial waterfrontโand built one of the worldโs largest ferry systems.
Today, Mr. Imperatoreโs stepson Armand Pohan, a Harvard-educated lawyer and local civic leader, runs the family-owned NY Waterway from the companyโs Weehawken, New Jersey, ferry terminal. That once rusting riverfront is now a โgold coastโ of apartments, shops, hotels, businesses, and recreational delights. All spurred by the late Mr. Imperatoreโs vision.
Armand Pohan and Nancy Rieger
Commuters and tourists cross the Hudson on comfortable NY Waterway ferries traveling from Edgewater, Hoboken, Jersey City, Weehawken, and other towns to piers in midtown and lower Manhattan. The best part: the ferry beats the tri-state areaโs legendary tra c jams every time.
A trip between Weehawken and Midtown/39th Street takes just eight minutes. The view: spectacular.
โNY Waterway lets you relax and enjoy the ride,โ says Mr. Pohan. โWhether weโre providing discounted fare packages to commuters and families, partnering with Big City Tours for scenic trips, or reducing our environmental impact with new engines, weโre always thinking of ways to improve the passenger experienceโand our community. Itโs what we do.โ
Passengers arriving at the Midtown Ferry Terminal can reach o ce towers, Central Park, Fi h Avenue, Rockefeller Center, Grand Central Station, Times Square, Madison Square Garden, and Chelsea via NY Waterwayโs free crosstown buses.
