THE TIVOLI MARKS 150 YEARS THE TIVOLI THEATRE HAS LIVED A RICH AND COLOURFUL HISTORY. THE GRADE A-LISTED VICTORIAN BUILDING WAS DESIGNED BY ARCHITECTS CHARLES JOHN PHIPPS & JAMES MATTHEWS AND OPENED ON DECEMBER 1872 AS HER MAJESTY’S OPERA HOUSE, WITH THE PLAY THE LADY OF LYONS. All forms of plays, operas and pantos were performed here until it closed and reopened in 1906, redesigned by theatre architect Frank Matcham. The new and improved theatre opened its doors in 1910 as The Tivoli Theatre of Varieties. Throughout the years the Tivoli entertained audiences with comedians, jugglers, ventriloquists, magicians and illusionists. Due to the rise in popularity of television in the 1960’s the Tivoli sadly closed its doors in 1966. It reopened the same year and operated as a Bingo Hall until 1997 when the Tivoli closed and was put on the at risk register as critical. It was then bought over in 2009 and reopened as the Tivoli Theatre Company. Major works were undertaken and the Tivoli opened with the play Inferno on 25 October 2013. The Tivoli was once again thriving until March 2019 when the curtain was dropped due to Covid 19. The doors remained shut for 17 months and the future of Tivoli was unknown. But on 29th August 2021 the interval had ended and the curtain was raised once again. The Tivoli has gone from strength to strength and is now regarded as one of Aberdeen’s most vibrant cultural hubs.

Throughout the years the Tivoli stage has hosted stars Will Haye, W.C Fields, a young Julie Andrews, Charlie Chaplin, Ian McKellen and many more! The Tivoli has fallen on some hard times but with the support of our customers and sponsors the Tivoli is continuing as a prominent venue providing culture and entertainment in the North East. Here’s to another 150 years!

GORDON BUCHANAN - 30 YEARS IN THE WILD THE ANNIVERSARY TOUR Wednesday 23rd February

One of the most prominent wildlife presenters and filmmakers working today, Gordon Buchanan’s journey is a remarkable story to tell.
