STOP SIGNS AND SPEEDING GOOD DAY TRADITIONS RESIDENTS, Hopefully you have noticed the new stop signs that were installed on December 18th, 2018. As you should know, the Grounds Committee helped us to have the additional stop signs installed as part of an ongoing effort to slow people down as they are traveling through the neighborhood. As it will take a little time for everyone to get used to the new signs along Traditions Way and Mulberry Greens Lane please exercise caution as you are coming off the side streets. The signs have been placed at the corner of:

Cotton Gin Row and Mulberry Greens Lanes

Traditions Way and Ducans Mill Lane

Traditions Way and Brassie Falls Lane

Traditions Way and Roller Mill Drive

Traditions Way and Harmony Grove Lane Stop bars will be painted on the asphalt in front of the signs in the coming days. We hope that it will not take long for you to get in the habit to stop at the signs as we do plan on inviting the sheriff in to monitor select locations in the near future (golf carts are required to stop at the stop signs as well)!

I am hopeful that these new traffic control devices are going to help with the speeding problem that we have.

We have clocked speeds that are 10-20 miles over the speed limit, and I have witnessed vehicles whipping by while out with contractors and standing near the curbs. The speed limit in the neighborhood is 25 miles per hour, Traditions Way and Cotton Gin Row are not Highway 124! This is a neighborhood where children play, pets accidently get loose, people walk and run, and people like to work in their yards and families of deer frolic.

It is very disheartening and scary when the decision is made to drive so fast. The speed limit is 25 miles per hour for a reason……safety and quite enjoyment of the neighborhood!

From the front of the neighborhood to the very end of Traditions Way it is 2.8 miles and it takes approximately 6.4 minutes to travel at the speed of 25 mph. At 40 mph it takes approximately 4.12 minutes to travel. Looking at this, what you stand to save by traveling through the neighborhood at this unsafe speed is a whopping 2 minutes and most people do not have to go all the way from the back to the front, so your time savings is even less. So please think about this, is it worth the 2 minutes if you hit a neighbor’s dog or something worse? Again, this is a busy neighborhood. We have owners that have various service contractors at their homes, deliveries being made, families moving in and out, children play, adults are active outdoors and homes are being built. So please slow down, keep it at 25 and enjoy your neighborhood as you leave for the real world or head home to your oasis at night.

RECIPE

ACHIOTE-MARINATED CHICKEN Servings: 4 Total Time: 1 hour Active Time: 15 minutes INGREDIENTS: 2 limes, for juice 4 cloves garlic, finely chopped 2 split chicken breasts (about 2 lb) 2 tablespoons ground achiote (or annatto) 1 teaspoon dried oregano 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 3 tablespoons Maggi seasoning sauce 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar 2 tablespoons canola oil, divided 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper Large zip-top bag Roasted potatoes (optional) PREP: Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit Chop Garlic (2 teaspoons).

Cut chicken into four portions; place in zip-top bag.

DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Squeeze limes for juice (3 tablespoons). Chop garlic (2 teaspoons). Cut chicken into four portions; place in zip-top bag.

2. Whisk lime juice, garlic, achiote, oregano, cumin, Maggi seasoning, wine vinegar, and 1 tablespoon oil until well blended and add to bag with chicken; seal bag and turn to coat chicken. Let stand 10 minutes to marinate (or overnight for more flavor).

3. Preheat large sauté pan on medium-high 2–3 minutes.

Remove chicken from marinade (discard marinade); season both sides of chicken with salt and pepper (wash hands). Place remaining 1 tablespoon oil in pan, then add chicken; cook 2–3 minutes on each side or until browned.

4. Transfer chicken to baking sheet. Bake 30–35 minutes and until chicken is 165°F. Let stand 4–5 minutes before serving.

Complete meal with roasted potatoes, if desired.

Share the Love What better month than February to impart the news of an initiative launched by homebuilder Paran Homes that encourages Traditions of Braselton residents to “share the love” of their neighborhood with prospective new neighbors. Through the soon-to-be-launched Ambassador Program, current residents will be paired with families considering a move to our community to meet at the Discovery Center and take a tour of Traditions while extoling all their favorite features, amenities, memories and insider tips about the surrounding area.

“Traditions of Braselton is more than a community,” said Whit Marshall, CEO of Paran Homes. “It’s a special destination that boasts a distinctive lifestyle centered around world class amenities, a charming hometown environment, excellent schools, vibrant social life and a sense of Southern Hospitality that is driven by the people who live here. The Ambassador Program is just one element of an overall rebranding campaign that involves the launch of a new website, new signage (which you may have already noticed) and more.

Further details about the Ambassador Program and community rebranding campaign will be unveiled at the upcoming Homeowner Launch Event on February 28 at the Owners’ Clubhouse. We hope you can join us for an evening that will include hors d’oeuvres, refreshments and the exciting reveal of our new direction for 2019. GOLF GROUPS COUPLE’S GOLF

This group has three consecutive tee times every Sunday morning. In Spring, Summer and Fall, they begin play at 9:30AM More tee times can be added depending on how many couples wish to play. Please contact Lynn Kolb at 706-824-0247 or galynn20@yahoo.com for more information. Every Tuesday, Lynn sends a text to interested parties asking for a response by Saturday morning. All are welcome to join in and they look forward to adding more couples as the weather warms up. *Couples on Sunday – Noon during winter.

LADIES’ GOLF GROUP

Currently, the ladies have two standing tee times Monday thru Friday starting at 8:30 AM. If you are interested in joining the Ladies Golf Group (even occasionally), please email Pam Poppe at ppoppe@mindspring.com if you wish to be included. Each Friday, Pam sends an email to the group asking which days you are interested in golfing during the coming week. She only asks for a 48-hour notice so she can add or cancel tee times. Don’t worry about handicaps since the skill levels vary widely. These women golf for fun! If the morning times don’t work for you, please let Pam know if you are interested in playing 9 holes at other times of the day.

SENIOR MEN’S GOLF GROUP

The senior men gather to play an organized format of stroke play on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. You never know who you will get paired with on these days, so it’s a great opportunity to meet your fellow neighbors and make new friends. On Thursdays, it’s just pair-up and play as you like. The course is closed on Tuesdays. Currently, our block of tee times starts at 10:00 AM. You can play as often or as little as you like; just show up at least 15 minutes before the first tee time. This is a social group with members of varying skill levels. Every spring and fall the men gather at the club grill for a fun evening with their significant others. MEN’S GROUP (MGA)

The men have weekly games on Wednesdays at 1:00 PM and weekends starting at 8:00 AM. They also sponsor monthly tournaments during the year so please contact Johnny Tucker at jrtucker1@windstream.net for more information.

FITNESS FRUSTRATION in February It’s been a month now since New Year’s resolutions and goals were made but you’re feeling frustrated. You’re not alone! Here’s why you should hang tough….

February is a universal challenge. Even avid skiers, who love snow and enjoy being bundles head to toe, grow weary of winter toward this month’s end. As we approach one too many gray (and rainy!) days, using the TV remote starts to feel like a version of exercise. Also, we feel the pull toward hibernation as we struggle to remain committed to fitness, better nutrition, and other healthy goals. Well, it is February. Accept it, know it’s temporary, and get outside when you can.

Are you expecting Too Much Too Soon? It’s easy to lose motivation when result allude us. After several weeks of dedication, we expect to be rewarded. Where is that Olympian body we’ve been sculpting? Is energy still lacking? How many more carrots and crunches are needed? And, blood pressure is still high?

Reality: According to a one study, it takes about 10-12 weeks to achieve improvements in body fat %. Sometimes more or less depending on your aggressiveness, genetics and the like.

Solution: Focus more on the journey and less on the destination. Be patient with yourself. You would with others so give yourself some of that grace.

Are You Paying Attention to Details Along the Way? You may not be dropping pants sizes, yet, but other improvements are occurring! For example, notice how you feel. Less stressed? You may not have the energy you exude during late spring, however, imagine how sluggish you would be if you were not exercising and eating well?

Also, you would not be developing healthy habits that benefit you all year long even well after goals are achieved. You are establishing, or solidifying a healthy lifestyle-not a single goal to be checked off a list. Experience the journey-your evolving and improving a way of living as you move towards those goals.

Commit for the Long-Term. Focus on a bigger life plan: Nourish a healthier, happier life with a body and mind in which you can comfortably live to an old age. Follow these tips to help you remain steadfast: 1. Your skipping workouts and healthy eating has gone out the window - Reevaluate your workouts and what you’re eating. Are they too hard or too easy? Are you not eating enough to fuel those workouts? Find something that, God forbid, you enjoy lol! Mix it up, add variety to your workouts and never get bored.

2. Your body is achy and tired and boy you got an attitude – Maybe your doing too much. Gone are the days of spending hours at the gym. Take 30 – 45 minutes and be done. We have families, friends and life to live. Yes, they are and should be a priority as well. Find balance among all these things.

3. You criticize yourself. Negative self-talk sabotages efforts in all aspects of life, health goals included. When I’m training with a client who talks this way about themselves, I immediately nip it in the bud and turn it into a positive. We have enough negativity around us and really, I believe we are what we think and verbally speak.

4. Are your expectations realistic? We are going to fall off the wagon and really, it’s OK to take a cheat day once in a while. So, you skipped a day or two in the gym, you aren’t going to sabotage all your hard work in 2 or so days. Instead, expect to gradually become the person you intend to be, with enough flaws and efforts to be wise and strong. With that attitude, you’ll likely reach that blood pressure goal as well as all the others!

GROUNDHOG DAY

Groundhog Day is a popular tradition celebrated in the United States and Canada on February 2. It derives from the Pennsylvania Dutch superstition that if a groundhog emerging from its burrow on this day sees a shadow due to clear weather, it will retreat to its den and winter will persist for six more weeks, and if it does not see its shadow because of cloudiness, spring will arrive early. While the tradition remains popular in modern times, studies have found no consistent correlation between a groundhog seeing its shadow or not and the subsequent arrival time of spring-like weather.[2] The weather lore was brought from German-speaking areas where the badger is the forecasting animal. This appears to be an enhanced version of the lore that clear weather on Candlemas forebodes a prolonged winter.

The Groundhog Day ceremony held at Punxsutawney in western Pennsylvania, centering around a semi-mythical groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil, has become the most attended.. Other cities in the United States (including Atlanta) and Canada have also adopted the event.

The 1993 film Groundhog Day helped boost recognition of the custom, and the celebration has spread even further. In 2009, Quebec began to mark the day (Canadian French: Jour de la Marmotte) with its own groundhog.

The observance of Groundhog Day in the United States first occurred in German communities in Pennsylvania, according to known records.

The earliest mention of Groundhog Day is a February 2, 1840 entry in the diary of James L. Morris of Morgantown, Pennsylvania, in Pennsylvania Dutch Country, according to the book on the subject by Don Yoder. This was a Welsh enclave, but the diarist was commenting on his neighbors who were of German stock.

General Beauregard Lee has been making predictions for years in metro Atlanta. He is a groundhog that resides at the Dauset Trails Nature Center in Jackson, Georgia, United States, just south of Atlanta. He previously resided at the Yellow River Game Ranch in Lilburn, Georgia just outside of Atlanta up until it closed in December 2017.

I was on my way home from a doctor’s appointment traveling on Highway 124. I looked ahead and saw a beautiful landscape.

One thing I noticed however was a lot of trash along the side of the road. How did all that trash get there? It saddened me to think of those people that have no problem throwing their used cups, papers, bottles, etc. from their car windows.

When I turned on to Traditions Way, I noticed that for the most part the sides of our streets are relatively free of trash. I would like to give a shout out to Carol and Bruce Higbie for all their efforts in cleaning up Traditions. Although we have had some very cold mornings recently, that doesn’t stop them from giving so much to our neighborhood.

By the time you read this, the First of our 2019 events will be in the books. February 2nd, we got together to enjoy a ‘Souper’ Bowl Party the night before the BIG GAME. Details and photos will be in next month’s Newsletter.

Meanwhile, I wanted to invite all of you how live in Traditions or are property owners, have an empty nest and would enjoy an evening out with friends and neighbors (in the 50 and up age range) about once a month, to consider joining us for a lot fun, yummy food and friendly fellowship. We are a group of lovely, warm and fun loving folks always ready to welcome new members. Eagle Ranch is one of the Southeast’s largest residential children’s programs. Children are provided a Christcentered home, education and counseling in an 18-24 month program that involves the entire family, with the goal of the child returning home. Eagle Ranch serves up to 42 boys and 24 girls, giving the structure, stability and time needed to work through a crisis situation.

Additionally, Eagle Ranch has a variety of outreach efforts designed to educate and support families, therapeutic professionals, children’s programs and non-profit organizations across the United States and worldwide.
