Back to School Safety & Courtesy

REMINDERS From Kathy, your Association Manager School is back in session and kids come home and play outside… often riding bikes or skating on the sidewalks and streets. • Reverse out of your drive responsibly and slowly – many walkers, runners and bikers are still out as the cooler weather is upon us. • Avoid parking on the street so buses can get through the neighborhood easily in early morning and afternoon pickup and drop off times. • Be sure to remind your children to always stand where they can be seen by drivers. • Look left-right-left when crossing the street. That extra look left will help keep street crossing safe, especially for children. • If your bus stop is on someone else’s property, please be courteous. Remind your children to pick up their trash, keep out of landscaped beds and decorative areas, and to be mindful of the noise levels while waiting for the bus to arrive.

Fall is the time to get your home ready for the coming winter... the most grueling season for your home. Here are a few reminders to make sure you are prepared Siding, paint and masonry are your home’s first line of defense against the elements. Fall is a great time to inspect them. • Cracks in brick, stone and siding should be caulked and repaired. • Check areas around doors and windows for gaps or deterioration of caulk and re-seal everything! • Ensure all doors to the outside shut tightly and check other doors for ease of use, and replace door weather stripping if doors are not air and water tight. • Ensure windows close tightly. • Inspect roofs for loose or broken shingles and repair. Ensure that your home’s drainage is working properly to avoid moisture or water buildup which could freeze and lead to costly repairs. • Ensure that the ground around your home slopes AWAY from the foundation wall so that water does not drain into your basement. Leaves and debris that have built up around your home may cause the flow of water towards your home instead of away. 4

• Clean leaves from roofs and downspouts and test the downspouts to ensure proper drainage from the roof. • Look for leaks at joints, and have your gutters re-caulked if they leak. • Drain and store outdoor hoses. Close the valve to outdoor hose connections and drain the hose bib, unless your house has a frost-proof hose bib. • Check wooden decks to make sure water still beads. Wooden decks should be continually protected from water with a deck treatment or wood stain. Water should roll OFF the deck so that it does not have a chance to bring additional moisture towards your home. General safety note: TEST the 9-volt battery in your smoke detectors and alarm system battery backup units! This is an inexpensive precaution to take. Be sure to have your chimney cleaned and inspected before burning a fire in your fireplace for the cooler weather!

MEET THE AUTHOR Have you always aspired to write a book, or to publish a collection of work? Why not speak with an author in person and learn the “ins-and-outs” of

Join us at the clubhouse on Monday, September 18th beginning at 7PM to meet published author, Alayne Smith. Alayne will share her creative process and a little about her recently published book “Ellen and the Three Predictions”, as well as be available for questions. RSVPs appreciated: Activities@Sterling-Life.com

ABOUT ALAYNE:

Alayne grew up in Alabama, lived in Tripoli, Libya and Denver, Colorado, and settled in Atlanta, Georgia in 1969. She received a B.A. degree from the University of Montevallo and masters and education specialist degrees in Instructional Technology at the University of Georgia. She taught in Gwinnett County, Georgia. She worked as a media specialist in a Gwinnett middle school for eleven years. In 1989, she moved to the high school level where she initiated a high school program of broadcast journalism and video production. Her students aired a daily morning news show that covered hard news and sports. Advanced students produced a monthly video magazine composed of feature stories of interest to teens. Her students interviewed and shot footage all over the Atlanta area. As a result, two of her students were awarded an Emmy in 1999. Alayne served as a CNN Student Bureau advisor for three years. Alayne began working at the county level in 2004. She trained media specialists and teachers in video production and broadcast journalism for five years. Ellen and the Three Predictions is her first novel and is published by Cactus Moon Publishing, Tempe, Arizona. Ellen and the Three Predictions was a semi-finalist at the William Faulkner - William Wisdom Creative Writing Competition in 2016. She is a member of: the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, the Atlanta Writers Club, and the Georgia Association of Instructional Technology. Summary of Ellen and the Three Predictions Ellen and the Three Predictions tells the story of eighteen-year-old Ellen Jones and the predictions of Luella, a seer in the small town of Marshall, Alabama. Old Luella predicts that Ellen will defend the beauty, foil a dictator, and find the soldier. When Ellen reads the predictions after her mother’s unexpected death, this all seems quite far-fetched. As Ellen defends a young Jewish girl, who is prevented from entering a beauty contest by the school board, and goes into Cuba to retrieve a damaged Aunt, she becomes a believer in Luella’s predictions and is convinced that she can discover who soldier Jonas Stockman, buried on Callander plantation land, really is. During the changing cultural and political landscape of the early 1960s, Ellen, an aspiring journalist, prepares a notebook of all she is learning about broadcast journalism.

Community Reminders

HALLOWEEN REMINDERS A message regarding Halloween and Trick-or-Treating within the Sterling on the Lake community... Just a reminder that Trick-or-Treating is observed each year on Halloween Night, October 31st. Free Halloween Goody Bags for the first 100 resident children at the clubhouse from 5:00PM – 6:00PM (while supplies last).

Trick-or-Treating: A Halloween Night tradition. As our community has become a popular location for Trick-or-Treating, please keep the following in mind: • If you would prefer to not participate in Trick-or-Treating and are home during the evening hours, please be sure your outdoor lights, front door or porch lights are turned off. • While Halloween activities affect many communities across the Greater Atlanta area, it is not specifically a Board nor Association regulated issue/activity. We have proactively partnered with Flowery Branch Police Officers to help manage the increased traffic associated with Trick-or-Treaters visiting Sterling on the Lake and to help keep this a safe activity for all local families. • If you are able to walk to the homes in your immediate area to Trick-or-Treat instead of driving vehicles, or able to use your golf carts if available, this helps lessen any congestion on the streets. Signage is placed at all of our entrances to inform guests that house-to-house Trick-or-Treating ends at 8:30PM.
