It’s almost graduation time and posting graduation banners around your home is a long held practice and one of pride for families. The Association recognizes this and celebrates these accomplishments with our Sterling on the Lake families. Please adhere to the following guidelines for Graduation Banners: 24” x 36” Graduation Banners can be displayed in your home’s yard May 1 – May 31st Note that individual homeowner banners or signs must remain on your property and will be removed if placed at any of the entrances to the community or on community common property. 4

Electric Car Charging Stations Coming to Flowery Branch!

Electric car charging stations outside of a person’s home — such as at a shopping center — were given the OK by Flowery Branch City Council Thursday night. Because city ordinances didn’t address such stations, they haven’t been allowed in the South Hall city, City planner Rich Atkinson said. “I just thought it was something to have on the books in case it comes up instead of scrambling to (address the issue),” he told the council. Homeowners can have a charging system at home, usually in the garage, as long as they get a permit from the city to “make sure the wiring is done properly,” Atkinson has said. The ordinance also says vehicle charging equipment “must be designed and located so as not to impede pedestrian, bicycle or wheelchair movement or create safety hazards on sidewalks.” Charging stations have been installed in other areas in Hall County, such as the Kroger Marketplace at New Holland Market off Jesse Jewell and Limestone parkways in Gainesville. The city of Gainesville also installed a charging station in the city’s Main Street Parking Lot off Jesse Jewell Parkway, between Main and Maple streets.

GOLF TOURNAMENT

May 15, 2017 • 9:00am Chicopee Woods Golf Course Open to Resident and Non-Resident Guest Players. The format again this year will be a fun scramble suited for men and women golfers of all skill levels. $80 covers: Green fees and cart, range balls & prizes. Lakes & Trails Tidbits: Blue Herons

Wading Birds of Lake Sterling In this issue of Sterling Life, the Lakes & Trails Committee would like to help you learn more about our lakes’ ecosystems… Watch for more “tidbits” coming in future issues, and a NEW informative page on our community website www. Sterling-Life.com! Members of the Lake and Trail Committee have identified two resident nesting families of Great Blue Herons at Sterling on the Lake. The Great Blue Heron is a large wading bird ranging in height from 36 to 54 inches, a wingspan up to 79 inches and can weigh up to 7.9 pounds. These magnificent birds can be found throughout most of North America. Blue Herons found in the southern United States are year round residents (birds, like humans, have found the climate and weather in our area so inviting they become permeant residents). Herons locate their food by sight and swallow their prey whole. They are generally solitary feeders found near the water’s edge waiting motionless for long periods of time in order to capture their prey. Their diet consist of fish, frogs and other small amphibians. Some birds have been known to capture prey too large to swallow. Yes, I have personally witnessed one of our herons catch a large crappie (crappie – a freshwater sunfish also known as speckle bass) weighing over 2 lbs. and tried for 5 minutes to find a way to swallow it, to no avail. The heron gave up on the catch and the fish was released, exhausted - but free from the lunch date with the heron.

The young chicks remain in the nest up to 55 days before taking flight and returning to the nest to be fed for up to 3 weeks. These are wonderful birds to watch from a distance, as they are easily spooked if approached. I have observed the herons from our walking trails and to watch the patience of a heron feeding will cause anyone to slow down, look around and enjoy the incredible amount of nature we have at Sterling. Our Tennis Program is now offering a BEGINNER CLINIC for adults new to the game. Clinic will cover the fundamentals of forehand and backhand strokes, how to serve, understanding scoring and the basics of match play. The cost of the clinic is $50.00 for 6 weekly lessons. Payment will be due the first night of the clinic. Additionally, all participants will receive a free tennis racket, 1 year paid membership to USTA and 1 paid year membership to NEGTA. This is courtesy of NEGTA (North East Georgia Tennis Association) as part of their Tennis Apprentice Program. Tennis Pro Travis Threadgill will be conducting this clinic. Mondays & Wednesdays at 9:30AM and Tuesdays & Thursdays at 7:00PM, held at the Clubhouse. PiYo delivers the muscle-sculpting, core-focused benefits of Pilates along with the flexibility and power of Yoga. PiYo’s low-impact compound exercises engage multiple muscle groups at the same time – while keeping your body in constant motion to elevate your heart rate and build and sculpt muscles. Restorative Smooth Yoga at the Lodge Motion Yoga Tuesdays at 12 Noon. Meditation is not limited to sitting silently and contemplating one’s own thoughts… Restorative yoga includes muscle focus and strength building postures and breath work. Each session will change to keep your interest and may include some phrasing/ chanting, mental imagery, etc. that will be incorporated into the class.

Our instructor (Heather) is certified in restorative and orthopedic practices, and can target movements to help you strengthen after surgery or injury, or to alleviate pressure or discomfort during your exercise.
