THANKSGIVING Home and Travel Safety Tips Thanksgiving is almost here. As we all gear up for another wonderful holiday with friends and family, it is important to remember that there are safety precautions to keep in mind. Taking a few minutes to read the following may prevent a holiday disaster. FOOD POISONING • Safely cooking a turkey starts with correctly defrosting it; place your bird on a tray or pan to catch any juices and keep it refrigerated until it’s ready to cook. • A 20-pound frozen turkey can take up to five days to thaw out so plan ahead. • Turkeys need to be cooked to an internal temperate of 165°F. • Leftovers need to be refrigerated within two hours after serving.
FIRE SAFETY • “Stand by your pan” when cooking. Never leave food, grease, or oils cooking on the stovetop unattended. • Pot holders, oven mitts, food wrappers, and other things that can catch fire should be kept away from the stove. • Children should also be kept away from hot stoves and paid particular attention to when they are in the kitchen. • Facing pot handles towards the rear of the stove can save them from being knocked over and scalding people nearby. • Long sleeves and loose clothing should be avoided while cooking as it can easily catch fire.
TRAVEL SAFETY • An emergency road kit is important to have in case of a breakdown or accident. • Ideally, travel outside of the heaviest days to avoid congestion – which are the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday afterward. • Get your car road-ready and start your trip with a full tank of gas. • Don’t be distracted. Drivers who text and drive are 23 times more likely to get into a crash than those who don’t. • Don’t drink and drive.

EMPTY NESTERS Elect New Officers Well, it appears obvious that the Empty Nesters of Reunion Country Club and Mother Nature just can’t get on the same script this year. First the long awaited Empty Nester Bocce Championship Contest was totally washed out by torrential rains in May. Now the much anticipated and perennial favorite Low Country Boil was literally blown away by hurricane / tropical storm Irma as plans to bring in fresh shrimp from St. Simons Island had to be scrapped due to the harsh weather conditions. Not to be deterred for long, co-hosts for the event Susan & Blanton Bagwell and Sue & Don Dennis relied on the old faithful “go to” solution of…POT LUCK SUPPER. And what a wise option that proved to be as members once again outdid them selves with favorite food items created in their family kitchens and shared with their friends and neighbors. As usual at such an event, the culinary offerings were as delicious and taste tempting and they were varied. From shrimp Creole to fried chicken and from Neptune salad to lasagna, it was all there. After the group had finished appetizers and prior to the serving of the main entrees, there was a short business meeting during which the officers for the upcoming year were elected. After a round of fierce political maneuvering and close voting the officers for the 2018 calendar year are as follows: Co-Chair – Ann Marie and Poncho Torres Secretary – Sue Dennis Treasurer – Ellen Kirk The newly named officers will actually take office after the Empty Nester Christmas party in December but are already busy planning interesting and fun events for the Empty Nester group to enjoy over the course of the coming year. Congrats, new officers, and many thanks for your dedication to our fine group.

Our family (my wife Caroline, our energetic 3 year old son, Noah, English bulldog named JoJo, Devon Rex Cat named Asia) recently moved back home to Georgia after spending the last couple of years in Singapore. Living and working in Singapore was an amazing experience for us and we are so glad we had that opportunity but there truly is no place like home. We are excited to be back with family and friends. We are so thankful for all the things God has done for us and we are very excited about continuing to serve him. We look forward to meeting all of our new neighbors as we get settled into the Reunion. Mark and Teri Polan Hi! We just moved onto Grand Reunion last week and could not be happier. We were living in Texas, outside of Houston in a small town you may have heard about on the news recently Beaumont. We were very fortunate to have been safe and dry, lucky with no damage to our previous home to make the move here easier. Mark had had his eye on this house the from the first time we drove through the neighborhood and the timing couldn’t have been better. Its our second time living in Georgia (4th move since we got married) and we are excited to start the next chapter here and meet all of our neighbors.
