A GROUP OF HAMILTON MILL FRIENDS PLAY IN THE WORLD SERIES OF POKER TO HONOR THEIR FRIEND How well do you know your neighbor? Hamilton Mill is a Home Town neighborhood with just under 2,200 homes with great amenities and activities to share and meet new people. In this heartwarming story, a group of friends all met and instantly connected when they moved to Hamilton Mill creating a bond playing tennis… and the exciting game of poker. Zach Klein, from WSB-TV Atlanta News reported on this amazing story this past July. “For a group of friends from Dacula, playing at this main event was a dream come true.” Over 7,000 poker players from all over the world gathered in Las Vegas for the World Series of Poker. Tom O’Meara, for over a decade along with friends from Dacula, played in multiple poker tournaments. One of his bucket list items was to play in the World Series in Las Vegas, but lost his nine-month battle with pancreatic cancer before he could get there. He did make sure his friends could attend, and left all five of his buddies the $10,000 they each would need to enter the tournament. His friend, Jerry Hanes, said “I was on my way to golf, gorgeous day, I’ve got my top down on my convertible and he calls me and he says, ‘I just wanted to let you know, because I didn’t want it to be a surprise, you’re in my will.’ And as soon as he said that I got goosebumps all over because there’s only one reason he put any of us in his will. He says ‘I’ve been hoping to get to this year’s Main, I’m just too sick I can’t do it. I’m not going to get it off my bucket list, but I’m going to make sure you do’.” Keren Jackson remembers getting her phone call: “He called me personally. It was soon after he went to his attorney after he found out his fight wasn’t going to end with success,” said Jackson. “We cried because I’d rather he be here to do this. It’s an honor. It’s a gift and I’m going to enjoy every minute of it.” That’s how John Nicol, Keren Jackson, Jerry Hanes, Miltos Tzimourtas, and Steve Pavlichek ended up in the 2017 WSOP Main Event, with Judy and Tom O’Meara Sr. cheering them on from the sidelines. They had custom polo shirts made and a special card protector marker to keep “the king of hearts, close to their hearts” for the tournament. “He really was the king of hearts. He would do anything for anybody,” said Hanes. “I don’t think there’s any better way to honor Tom, honor his life and honor a guy that basically came from working in Detroit as a janitor, barely making ends meet and becoming who he ended up becoming in the end–a great, great guy,” said Tzimourtas. Steve Pavlichek ended up cashing in at the tournament for $15,000 and the group, who had a profit sharing deal setup prior to going, promised to give a portion of their winnings to cancer research in Tom’s honor. Brenda Knight, another friend to the group and realtor in Hamilton Mill, said it best. “Tom is not the first resident of Hamilton Mill to pass away from cancer, or need the loving care of his friends and neighbors. His story is an example of the generosity and care that exists in our community.” It’s been almost a year since Tom passed. Each of the five described Tom the same way: overly generous, willing to do anything to help out a friend, and make the neighborhood a better place. On a personal level, Tom was the realtor that sold the house I bought in Millwater Crossing. He literally handed me the keys to my house with that big grin of his after closing. This entire story of friendship brings tears to my eyes but also makes me so proud to be a resident of Hamilton Mill. Article by April Williams Sources: Pocketfives.com and wsbtv.com

TENNIS NEWS
TENNIS NEWS
from Jeff Dudacek, Director of Tennis Fall tennis is one of my favorite tennis seasons. Besides the better weather, the players have been playing all year so you see the best tennis. Starting after Labor Day, the fall league season kicks back in with 23 league teams. The league has changed with Hamilton Mill adding more senior teams to the week. The only days without a league match are Monday, Wednesday and Friday. With over half of the homeowners playing tennis, the league teams are a big part of formation of new friends in Hamilton Mill. Fall Tennis 101 and 102 classes will start up again this month. This is the best way to start tennis and get the right direction into the league play. Our Labor Day tennis round-robin this month is a great social event for all players. Remember, the tennis shop and the staff are here to help you on all your tennis questions. The tennis shop is milltennis@bellsouth.net and you can reach me at jeff.milltennis@gmail.com. FALL ALTA START DATES Fall Alta starts September 5th-10th. Tuesday through Sunday the courts will be very busy scheduling the flex league matches and social court time. Courts 15, 16 are walk on courts. They can be reserved 30 minutes before start time. SUMMER LEAGUE RESULTS ALTA MIX-DOUBLES A-7 Perkins- 2nd place ALTA SENIOR MEN B-3 Foley division winner B-7 Eggleston division winner A-3 Edwards Division winner. Congratulations on City winner! Check out the picture of team members and cheering staff at the city finals. LADIES USTA 4.0 Crowe division winner 3.0 Hilderhauf division winner WINTER ADULT LEAGUE DEADLINES Fall Alta is about to start but the USTA Winter season and Alta mix-doubles teams are due in October. Remember if you want to play or switch teams the first step is to sign the online book. Captains will pick up players in September. The winter season starts in November and ends in January with breaks for the holidays. Fall Beginner 101/102 Calling all adult beginner players and rusty players! Have you never played at all? Fall Beginner 101/102 is for you. We will be holding our last 101/102 for the year. The class will starts in the middle of September. This is the best way to get involved on a team or even start one yourself at Hamilton Mill. The cost is $65.00 for five (5) one hour group lessons. When you get done with this class, tennis will not be stranger to you anymore. If you do not have a racket or it is over 5 years old, we will let you use a demo with the new technology until you are ready for a racket. Send an email to the tennis shop milltennis@bellsouth.net for class times and dates. COURT UPDATE New score boards are being installed at Lakeview and Millview. Score boards get damaged from moving the score marker to rough or with your racket. Our courts go through plenty of players through the year. Please help by keeping our courts and amenities clean for the next players to use the courts. Remember that next visitor might be your future neighbor that buys a house in Hamilton Mill.

TENNIS NEWS USTA SUMMER SECTIONALS Hamilton Mills 3.0 Hilderhauf team traveled to Mobile, Alabama for the Southern Sectional. They competed with the best of the 5 states, to advance to the Nationals. Even though they came up short, they did an awesome job representing Georgia and Hamilton Mill. Sectionals are the best of the south and most teams are all-star handpicked club teams. For a neighborhood, they did very good to get that far in the USTA league play. They fought every match until the end of the long weekend tournament. Daniel went with the group and gave them professional support throughout the tournament. You can tell by the pictures it definitely was a team weekend. Way to go Hilderhauf team, Hamilton Mill is very proud of your accomplishment! WANTED! NEW LEAGUE PLAYERS Are missing out of all the fun? You see everyone talk at the bus stop in their tennis clothes‌ Why did the developers build at least 2 courts or more in Atlanta subdivisions? A big part of Atlanta growth is league tennis. Many of our players went through Tennis 101 and 102 before they joined a team. It was great to learn or review at their own pace. New beginning teams are forming in January. Existing teams are always looking for new talent. The first step is to sign up for 101 or 102 classes. Classes will be forming in mid-September for our tennis 101 and 102. This class is for adult players who are new and also players that need a refresher course. The class covers forehands, backhands, volleys, serves and strategy in a 1-hour session for 5 weeks. The cost is $65.00. We have loaner rackets. Do not buy a racket because your game changes through-out the class. The pro will fit you with the racket for your style. It’s a great class if you plan on playing league tennis. Email the shop for start times and dates.

SWIM TENNIS TEAM NEWS TIPS
TENNIS TIPS The Dropshot The drop shot can be one of the most effective shots in tennis. If done correctly, it will change the direction of the match in your favor. Having another shot in your game will keep the players guessing. The Grip: Because you want to hit the drop shot with an open racket face- the Continental Grip fits perfectly. This is the case of both the forehand and backhand sides. In fact- the slice backhand is the perfect preparation for a drop shot- the racket is slightly open and on plane with regards to the backswing. The Stance and Footwork: Yes, I have to talk about boring footwork. You will most likely need to run up on the ball to some degree in order to pull off the drop shot, because it is usually a weak shot from your opponent with little pace on it. This means that you will treat it in the same fashion as you would an approach shot. The Stroke: Imagine hitting your volley off the bounce. The down ward motion with light grip is a key to execution. You want to “feel” the ball up and over the net and keep the racket head up after contact. As you are taking speed off the ball, you want to be able to maneuver the racket head under the ball smoothly, but somewhat aggressively to create the spin. The feel of this shot and the follow through will take the most practice.
Gambling is illegal on big points: Too many times players try and make a difficult shot, like a drop shot, on a big point. Players have a tendency to get tight on big points, hitting a drop shot is not a percentage shot in this situation. Instead, wait until you have your opponent out of position or you have a lead to hit a drop shot. Social media: Don’t advertise your drop shot. Letting everyone know on the court you are hitting the drop is the number 1 mistake. Holding the racquet up in front of you will keep the opponent guessing. The shot before needs to be a good set up shot for the drop shot. Don’t blink, it happens fast. The disguise of this transition keeps the opponent at bay making, the drop shot more effective. Can” No persons land” be your friend? Players should not to hit a drop shot from behind the baseline. Of course hitting the drop shot while standing in the service box is good but it is hard to disguise. Did you get stuck in “no persons land” well that is a good place to perform the drop shot? Remember it has to be the right ball and your weight is moving forward to increase your percentages.
See ya on the courts!
Hit with backspin: Every great drop shot is hit with backspin or slice. The backspin on the ball causes it to “bite” when it hits the court. Your opponent in turn has to run farther to track the ball down making it more difficult to return in play. A good back spin, on the drop shot, should make the ball bounce twice in the service box.
