A Message from the Board

A Message from the Board Dear Hamilton Mill Homeowners, Summer is almost at a close and the Hamilton Mill Community is bustling with lots of activity! We know that with all this activity, and the start of the school season, many of you will be cleaning out your closets and holding garage sales. We would like to take this opportunity to remind you of the covenants pertaining to sign placement. Signs may only be placed at the front entrance of your subdivision no earlier than 24 hours before the start time and needs to be taken down immediately upon sale end date. Please also remember not to place any type of signage in Hamilton Mill Common areas such as the center island dividers along all of Hamilton Mill Parkway, 4-way stop signs, light poles, and flower beds at each subdivision’s entrance. We have underground irrigation systems beneath the flowering beds that could be damaged if sign stakes are placed too deep within these areas potentially resulting in punctured water lines. These rules also apply to Graduation signs, banners, For Rent/Sale signs and directional signage. Any sign that is placed in an unapproved location will incur a $25.00 charge per sign. You may find a complete copy of the Hamilton Mill Community Association’s Covenants and Design Guidelines on our website at: www.hmill.com and we have copied an excerpt regarding Signs here for your convenience. Signage In accordance with Declaration, no sign may be erected on any lot without prior written Modification Committee approval except for:

Signs not meeting the above criteria must be first approved by the Modification Committee. Signage posted in the Area of Common Responsibility not in compliance with this guideline will be removed and the homeowner posting the sign will be charged a $25.00 per sign and/or sign hardware removal fee. Signs removed by the Association will be disposed of immediately. Spirit Signs Spirit Signs, Banners, or Flags such as for Mill Creek or any other seasonal team sport, such as soccer, baseball, etc. may be displayed on the day of the event, but not on a permanent basis. These signs shall not exceed four square feet. No signs may be installed in the County Right of Way, on the entry monuments or in Association landscaping. Any damage to landscaping or irrigation will be billed to the Lot owner. Neighborhoods are encouraged to purchase group banners. Graduation banners can be installed throughout the month of May. All other spirit signs require submission of a Modification Request Form. Signage posted in the Area of Common responsibility, not in compliance with this guideline, will be removed and the homeowner posting the sign will be charged a $25.00, or the actual cost of removal, whichever amount is higher, per sign or sign hardware removal fee. Graduation signs removed by the Association will be held in the management office for a maximum of seven (7) days.”

Placing signage in the approved locations not only helps a. Signs required for legal proceedings to maintain a consistent Community-Wide standard of b. One” For Sale’’ or” For Lease’’ sign per lot, meeting the required appearance by enhancing the curb appeal, but also cuts sign guideline is allowed. The Sign Guideline is attached to down on the number of duplicate signage so often placed this document in multiple locations throughout the neighborhood. We thank c. One burglar alarm yard sign per lot provided such sign is in you for your continued partnership and cooperation in helping good condition and has a surface area of less than 6 square to preserve the beauty of our great Hamilton Mill Community! inches d. Garage sale signs will be permitted on the lot on which the sale is taking place during the hours of 5:00pm Thursday through 5:00pm Sunday. One free standing directional sign may be placed at the neighborhood entrance on the morning of the sale and must be removed at the end of the sale. Signs may not be larger than 18” x24”. Signage may not be attached to any street sign posts or light posts. e. Political signs (a maximum of two signs, but no more than one per candidate), not more than 18” x24” may be displayed on properties no earlier than two weeks prior to any election and must be removed no later than the day after the election. Hamilton Mill Recipes

Caramel Apple Cream Cheese Spread This easy party spread is super satisfying and so easy to make on game day! Serves: 8 Ingredients

• 8 ounces cream cheese • Caramel sauce (homemade or store-bought) • toffee bits • Sliced apples, pears, pretzels for serving

Preparation

1. Drizzle caramel sauce over cream cheese then sprinkle with toffee bits. Enjoy! Recipe courtesy of ©Amy Johnson | She Wears Many Hats

Favorite Green Salad with Apples, Cranberries & Pepitas Recipe yields 2 full-sized salads or 4 side salads. Ingredients

Green Salad • 2½ ounces (about 5 cups) pre-washed spring greens salad blend • 1 large Granny Smith apple • 1/3 cup dried cranberries • 1/4 cup pepitas (green pumpkin seeds) • 2 ounces chilled goat cheese, crumbled (or about 1/2 cup crumbled goat cheese) Apple Cider Vinaigrette • 1/4 cup olive oil • 1½ tablespoons apple cider vinegar • 1½ teaspoons honey • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Preparation

1. Toast the pepitas: In a medium-sized skillet, toast the pepitas over medium heat, stirring frequently, until they are turning golden on the edges and making little popping noises. Transfer the pepitas to a small bowl to cool. 2. Make the dressing: In a cup or jar, whisk together the olive oil, vinegar, honey and mustard until emulsified. Season to taste with salt and black pepper. 3. Just before serving, chop the apple into thin, bite-sized pieces. Place your greens in a large serving bowl. Top with sliced apple, dried cranberries and toasted pepitas. Use a fork to crumble the goat cheese over the salad. Drizzle the salad with just enough dressing to lightly coat the leaves once tossed (you probably won’t need all of it). Gently toss to mix all of the ingredients and serve! Wearing white in the summer makes sense. But is wearing white only during the summer months (as enforced by my very own Grandmother, only between Labor Day and Easter) even practical anymore?

acceptable and who wasn’t, the women who were already “in” felt it necessary to create fashion rules that everyone in the know had to follow. That way, if a woman showed up at the opera in a dress that cost more than most Americans made in a year, but it had the wrong sleeve length, other women would know not to give her the time of day.”

“Not wearing white outside the summer months was one of these silly rules. White was for weddings and resort wear, not dinner parties in the fall. Of course it could get extremely hot in September, and wearing white might make the most Who made this rule? sense, but if you wanted to be appropriately attired you just did not do it. Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894, “While no one is completely sure exactly when or why and society eventually adopted it as the natural endpoint for this fashion rule came into effect, our best guess is that it summer fashion.” had to do with snobbery in the late 1800s and early 1900s. But you may still have that voice in your head that tells you it’s time to clean out the closet and put away the white clothes and sandals that first weekend in September. I say we follow the example of Coco Chanel and wear it year round, because guess what? It is hot in the south all year round. Isn’t that why they invented “winter white”? Maybe a happy medium compromise could nix Labor Day as the cut off, and we can wear white at least until the first day of Fall, which this year is September 22. Tennis Tips

Tennis Tips - Understanding and Defending Different Game Styles There are two key words that need to be defined: strategy and tactics. Strategy refers to your general approach to playing a match. The tactics of tennis are the specific shots and your court positioning that will help you execute your strategy successfully. This varies according to the strategy being used. Four basic playing strategies of play are counter puncher, aggressive baseliner, all court player and serve and volley. Counter puncher They are usually able to hit the right shot that neutralizes or even beats their opponent’s best shots. Sometimes they are called ‘pushers” if you keep losing to them over and over. Additionally, counter punchers usually have great stamina and are able to simply outlast their opponents.

anywhere, but these players still have some weaknesses in their game. Sometimes, they can hit everything well but don’t have one shot that can be called as a real weapon. Tactics of Tennis against an All Court Player • Focus only on the ball and try not to be confused or surprised by what your opponent is doing from point to point. • Hit deep consistently and use variety in spin, trajectory and pace. • Use your own strengths to create openings on the court. • Be alert and aware as to what kinds of shots cause him or her more trouble. Make him or her hit more of these shots.

Serve and Volley Player The last type of player is the net rusher or serve-volley player. The strategy they use is to constantly put pressure by coming to the net Tactics of Tennis against a Counter puncher: on almost every point. At the professional level, this style of play • Mix up hitting hard and deep with short angled slices to force him has largely gone by the wayside because the modern equipment or her off the baseline. and court conditions have made it easier for the baseline player • Hit drop shots and then lob or pass. to hit clean passing shots. But in doubles, this is still the best way • Be very patient in constructing points. Expect everything to come to play. back and don’t be surprised if the shot you thought was going to be a winner gets returned. Tactics of Tennis against a Serve and Volley Player: • Attack the serve, especially the second serve. • Get a high percentage of first serves in. • Return low at the feet. The Aggressive Baseliner • Hit lobs early to keep him or her from crowding the net and open The second playing style is that of the aggressive baseliner. This up the passing lanes. is the most common style you see on the professional tours today. • Set up your passing shots by hitting low to his or her feet first. This player has several big shots, usually the first serve and the • When he or she is at the baseline, keep the ball as deep as forehand. Tactics of Tennis Against an aggressive baseliner: • Get a lot of first serves in. • Try to return the first serve deep. • Keep the ball deep and mix up the spin, trajectory and pace of your shots to keep him or her from developing a rhythm. • Hit short, low angled slices to force him or her off the baseline and hit awkward shots. • Hit drop shots if the player is uncomfortable at net. • Be willing to defend by hitting high, heavy topspin or deep slices to stay in the point.
