North Hall going to continue to grind it out running as it seeks return to the playoffs

swoodall@gainesvilletimes.com For David Bishop, it’s not necessarily about changing everything about an offense in order to adapt.

Bishop, who enters his fourth season as the North Hall head coach, understands maintaining the status quo on offense always has its challenges, especially if you coach a program set in its ways as a traditional flexbone set, pitted in pass-happy region.

But for the first time in four years, Bishop is replacing the one responsible for steering the ship.

Kyle Bacus, the Trojans’ workhorse back and Elite 11 rusher was one of 14 starters to graduate in 2016 following a 6-5 mark and the program’s fourth playoff appearance in the last five seasons.

In their first season back in the 3A classification, the Trojans secured back-to-back postseason berths in 2016 behind a senior-laden cast headed by the workhorse back Bacus, who gutted out 1,676 of the Trojans’ 3,227 rushing yards with 14 touchdowns. The Trojans fell in a lopsided contest to Westminster in the opening round of the Class 3A tournament.

In order to make it three straight, Bishop said the keys for those few young returning pieces will be maintaining that Trojan philosophy — play passionate and disciplined football — and continuing development.

“Our kids have done a lot of growing over the summer, so they’ll just have to continue to grow,” Bishop said. “So when we do get to the region, we’ll be playing really good football.”

North Hall (3-3, Region 7-AAA) still competes in a conference riddled with spread offenses that include East Hall, Greater Atlanta Christian and Dawson County.

OFFENSE Last season, North Hall’s running game was comprised of a hard-nosed runner like Bacus’ creating opportunities up the gut behind a slightly bulkier offensive front.

This year, those opportunities will have to be created else-

where, as the Trojans now trade size for speed while showcasing a more mobile quarterback in junior David Seavey. Bishop expects to add Seavey into the mix of a committee-run backfield: Jack Brown, Cutter Sanford, Chris Thrasher and Noah Holman. Bishop hopes to implement more quarterback runs, and the athleticism of Seavey should help alleviate some of that pressure typically put on the backfield in this runheavy attack.

“You know, it’s a tradeoff, and that’s the magic of what we do,” Bishop said of their offense.

“A lot of people don’t realize that. They just think the WingT is the Wing-T. Our personnel determines how we set things up. You’ll see a little bit different setup this year.”

Following the departure of the Trojans’ leading receiver Maddox Turner (11 catches, 222 yards, TD) returning wideout and senior Noah Holman (6-foot2, 190 pounds) is another Bishop hopes to utilize in the passing game from time to time.

DEFENSE It’s no secret the Region 7-3A is loaded with offensive flair, especially at the quarterback position. And given Bishop’s predicament, the coach plans to feature a 4-3 or five-safety look in order to utilize the speed on the defensive side.

Last year, North Hall experienced one of the worst cases of the injury bug in the trenches.

But Bishop can happily say he brings a healthy crop of playmakers along the front seven, and it begins with Mitch Seymour on the defensive front and Logan Jackson, as the only returning pieces on this unit.

Linebackers Landon Earnest and Nate Nixon are another pair that should bring some strength to the pass rush.

In addition to leading the offense, Seavey just may be the area’s only starting quarterback headlining the inside linebacker spot.

“Last year, we were banged up the whole year,” Bishop said.

“We have three-down linemen, and all our three-down linemen were injured for either a portion of the season or the whole season. So right now, I feel pretty

good about what we’ve got playing up front.”

At safety, Brown and Sanford, along with Jackson, Holman and Thrasher will make up North Hall’s secondary.

SPECIAL TEAMS Bishop confirmed the return of senior Joel Barrientos and Erin Sanchez to fulfill the place kicking and punting duties on special teams.

OUTLOOK There’s no telling how North Hall will stack up now in its second season in Region 7-3A. Greater Atlanta Christian (13-2 in 2016), which captured the Region 7 title and eventually fell in the Class 3A state title game last December, lost star quarterback and top-recruit Davis Mills to Stanford. But the team still boasts a bevy of talent on both sides of the ball. Region runner-up Dawson County (7-3 in 2016) brings back a dynamic passer in Coey Watson despite losing many of its starters to graduation after 2016.

mrodrigue@gainesvilletimes.com Entering his 16th year as Gainesville High’s football coach, Bruce Miller finds himself in a surprisingly unfamiliar position.

The Red Elephants are coming off their only losing season under Miller, a 5-6 campaign that ended with first-round playoff exit. The coach pointed to inconsistency, especially on offense, as the culprit for last year’s disappointments.

“We did not put together a complete game all year long,” Miller said. “I felt like it was either the first half here or the second half there. We never played a first half and a second half in a consistent manner. I’ve looked at myself within, and I’m going to take the blame for that.”

But with the entire offensive line returning and expected improvement at the skill positions, Gainesville hopes those issues will vanish in 2017.

That could mean leapfrogging Dacula and Lanier, which were both knocked out in the early rounds of the playoffs last year, in the Region 8-6A standings. One thing is certain, though — the Red Elephants won’t be dwelling on last season’s shortcomings.

“You learn as much as you can from it,” Miller said. “You look at what you were doing, you go back and analyze it. You kind of say, ‘Hey, these are the things we need to fix,’ and then you start looking at ways to fix them. And I think we’ve fixed some of those things.”

Tre’ Luttrell is taking over at quarterback for the departed DJ Irons, who now plays at Grayson High.

The junior came to Gainesville from Buford High in the offseason alongside his father Stan, Gainesville’s new defensive coordinator and strength coach. Miller raved about Tre’ Luttrell’s ability to make plays both in the air and on the ground, which should help the Red Elephants improve after scoring less than 20 points per game last year.

Junior Quintavious Hayes, sophomore JD Brooks and freshman Montavious Tabor are battling for the starting running back spot.

Miller stressed ball security at the position and said the trio will likely split carries if one player doesn’t assert himself.

Tre Blackwell, a junior, is a returning starter at wide receiver. Slot receiver will be filled by converted running back Tyriq Kabir and sophomore Justice Johnson, while senior Davonte Mize will be split out wide.

But Miller is most excited about his offensive line, where all five starters plus other experienced players return from last year’s squad.

Sophomore Carson Thompson and junior Max Brand are both getting reps at center, and whoever doesn’t lock down that spot will probably slide to left guard. AJ Markham will provide a senior presence at one of the tackles, and junior Kyle Barrett is expected to play right guard.

The other tackle position will be manned by either junior Damon Mixon or sophomore Jordan Williams. Miller also mentioned senior Lashawn Jones as a candidate for playing time, illustrating just how deep Gainesville is along the offensive line.

DEFENSE Senior Trever Calvert brings two years of starting experience to the defensive line, a position he’ll share with sophomores AJ Toliver and Makius Scott.

A pair of versatile seniors will line up at defensive end — part-time tackle Craig Young and Zion Williams, who can slide to tackle or linebacker.

Senior middle linebacker Keith Harris is the heart of Stan Luttrell’s 3-3 stack defense, and classmates Malique Johnson and Ishmael Robinson are the frontrunners to line up on either side of him.

Behind that talented defensive front is a secondary short on experience but oozing with athleticism. Rassie Littlejohn, a junior, and Brooks are expected to play cornerback, while sophomore twins Chase and Chandler Watson will play safety.

“We’re very young in the secondary, but we’re very talented,” Miller said. “It’s a question of how well those guys mature and play early on.”

SPECIAL TEAMS Senior Christian Jaimes will handle all kicking duties. Littlejohn, Blackwell and Johnson are all in the mix as return men.

OUTLOOK Gainesville will always boast one of the most talented rosters in the area, but, as Miller pointed out, success boils down to consistency. Still, if Tre’ Luttrell is as good as advertised and the young secondary holds up on the back end of a solid defense, the Red Elephants could be in for another region title and deep playoff run.

year. He is joined by outside linebacker Will Price and Colby Adams, who made the transition from defensive end to linebacker this offseason.

Tyler Williams is one Hall says is eager to get to work this season along the defensive line after a knee injury sidelined him for much of last season. Two-way lineman Cody Inman and newcomer TJ Ballard (defensive end) will line up alongside Williams in the trenches, as well.

Janess anchors the secondary from the free safety position, while senior Trey McIntosh (cornerback) and Saul Almanzar (strong safety) should each bring something to the table in this 3-4 set.

SPECIAL TEAMS The Falcons bring back two experienced legs on special teams. Alexander Sanchez will fulfill the duties of placekicker, followed by Lance at punter.

OUTLOOK Depending on how quickly Hall’s current roster can grasp new systems, the Falcons face an uphill climb now in their second season in a six-team region riddled with talent.

The Falcons were outscored 176-41 in their four region losses to Walnut Grove, Loganville, Clarke Central and Class 5A state runner-up Buford. But once again, optimism is high for Hall’s players.

“They have actually been excited and they feel like we have a chance to be a factor in the postseason,” Hall said. “So the region is one thing, and six region games, and six very talented region opponents. And our kids, they don’t lack in confidence. We can make progress, and make the postseason, and hopefully make a run there.”

If there’s one thing Ben Hall doesn’t have to worry about in his first season at Flowery Branch, it’s a lack of confidence in his players.

The Falcons (3-7 last season), who have missed the playoffs for the previous three seasons, experienced a bit of a lapse last fall with their first losing mark since 2004. Any other program may also find itself in a long and grueling climb to get back to its winning ways. Hall, who took over for Chris Griffin earlier this year following a fruitful tenure at Jefferson, feels that won’t necessarily be the case with this seniorstacked group.

He and the school envision a long-awaited return to the postseason.

“The kids are hungry,” said Hall, a former assistant coach for Flowery Branch in 2008. “They want to play well and have Hall success. It’s just a matter of getting them in the right direction. The pieces of the puzzle are there. They’re gonna work hard, we’re gonna coach them hard. And we plan to have success.”

Hall has seen what that looks like as the offensive coordinator and head coach at Jefferson.

He guided the Dragons to two region titles, at least 10 wins each year and a second-round playoff appearance in each of his four seasons as head coach.

Hall was also quite taken back by the morale of his players in spite of the recent coaching and system changes, especially from the 28 seniors he inherits in 2017.

The general consensus of excitement has been infectious on the younger players, according to the coach.

“That’s not always the case with a coaching change, and these kids have been very receptive and have seemed to adapt very well,” Hall said. “Hopefully we can take advantage of our senior leadership, and make strides throughout the season.”

In addition to the confidence this Falcons team exudes, Hall won’t have to worry about a shortage of skill position players as he employs the same multiple pro system utilized at Jefferson. And with game experience already on their side, Hall said it will be a matter of plugging them in the right place.

In this scheme, Hall is hopeful they will be able to spread the ball around, and it all starts at the quarterback position, which will no longer be occupied by Nick Lance.

The Falcons will instead see Lance move over to tight end, and have sophomore quarterback Elijah Gainey facilitate that starting role, followed by junior Connor Void as the backup.

“We feel like he offers us to have an opportunity to have a truly balanced approach with our receivers and guys in the backfield,” Hall said of Gainey. “We’d like to be a 50-50 run-pass team, and I think we have the quarterback to allow us to do that, and some receivers that can stretch the field. You know, it really depends how the season progresses.”

Gainey should have some viable receivers downfield with Jalin Strown as the deep threat, followed by senior Elite 11 playmaker Myles Janess, whose versatility and stature can be put to good use at any position. Sophomore Grant Lackey is another to have a knack for getting open.

The Falcons welcome back a pair of speedy backs in senior Malik Damons (6 foot 2, 215 pounds) and Malik Drayton, who should also see some looks from the slot.

Hall also expects to utilize the fullback position through TJ Ballard and Jose Nazir.

Hall has been especially vocal about his offensive line.

The guys lining up front bring the right amount of size to provide adequate pass protection and create gaping holes in the run game.

It will be comprised of the line’s leader up front in guard Cannon Underwood, followed by 6-foot-5, 275-pound Bailey Ottaway at tackle, 6-foot-7, 315 pound Dakota Little, junior guard Matthew Porter (6-3, 250) and sophomore center Clayton Walcvuk.

West Hall coach Tony Lotti hates to use the phrase, but it appears his Spartans will indeed be undergoing a ‘baptism by fire’ this coming season.

Only returning six total starters — three on offense, three on defense — Lotti will be pressing the reset button before attempting to build on the program’s historic 2016 campaign in which West Hall matched its deepest playoff run.

Even replicating that success with a slew of unfamiliar faces seems to be Lotti’s predicament for the last four years.

The perennial success of his last graduating class is now a thing of the past, and as always, the sixth-year head coach doesn’t really put too much stock in the rebuilding concept.

“Each year, it’s a brand new team ...it is,” Lotti said. “There’s new faces, faces that are not here anymore, and new ones who have come in. And each team molds and determines their own identity. That’s what I told them; the program doesn’t change, teams do.”

West Hall’s last graduating class brought the program its most successful four-year tenure in the program history, with consecutive playoff appearances in as many seasons, including a morale-boosting playoff victory in 2016 that sent the Spartans past the first round for the first time since 2000.

That same resiliency is present in Lotti’s current senior group, and so is the chemistry. But only time will tell how that manifests on the field once the Spartans enter what the coach considers to be a tough 2017 schedule.

Despite dropping its 2016 opener to Gainesville in the inaugural Marvin Orenstein Kickoff Classic, West Hall rattled off four straight wins that included a double-OT edge of Dawson County for a 5-1 start.

Its only road loss came against eventual Class 4A runner up Thomson in the second round of the playoffs.

Lotti lost a string of playmakers on the offensive side of the ball, including quarterback Jacob Satterfield, and 1,000-yard rusher Tyrese Osborne. But the real question mark comes under center as two names have been thrown into the pot to fill the void of three-year starter Satterfield: junior Quentin Smith and sophomore Michael Thompson.

While Lotti indicated he wouldn’t be against a two-quarterback system, the contrasting styles or who gets the hot hand in ample time may be the deciding factors in changing the coach’s mindset.

injury disrupted Cooper’s chances for more carries alongside Osborne during 2016, but he should have a clean bill of health entering 2017. Cooper’s grind-it-out approach between the tackles should give the Spartans more chances in moving the chains and -in-turn, sustaining drives.

“I’m excited to see him in that role, kind of help us move the ball down the field, so to speak. ... I don’t know necessarily if we’re gonna break away on those 90-yard runs, but slow and steady. .. Controlling the field position, controlling the clock is gonna be important for us too,” Lotti said.

But of course, no rushing attack will be complete without a sturdy offensive front.

West Hall’s offensive line includes several returning pieces, beginning with two-time All-Region tackle Josh Taylor, followed by Jackson Bartley and Corey Davis at center.

“We’re gonna go as they go,” Lotti said of his offensive line.

John Stoecker, along with Gabe Gantt and Austin Sinclair, should line up at wide receiver for the Spartans.

Lotti is hopeful the Spartans can make it five-straight years getting to the postseason, but with a new crop of young talent filling the holes this year, there are no guarantees.

Last year’s road warriors may also have to repeat that same magic as Gainesville, Dawson County and Marist make for three difficult road contests. They also close the regular season at home with last year’s state quarterfinalist Blessed Trinity (10-3, 4-0 Region 7-AAAA), which defeated the Spartans 34-13 last season.

Shane Williamson feels like this is his first real season at the helm of Lumpkin County High football.

Even though he arrived at Lumpkin County at the beginning of last season, he wasn’t really able to implement the style of football he wanted to play. Now, with a year under his belt, he has been able to hire some new coaches to help with the adjustment to a pro-style offense.

One of the biggest advantages for him as a coach was getting to spend an entire spring and summer with the team — something he didn’t get last year.

“We want to use formations and be able to run the ball, of course, and throw the ball and try to use as many of our athletic players as we can,” Williamson said. “Get them on the field and use them at one time and not just be a runoriented offense.”

“Change the culture” is the team’s motto this year, and that’s exactly what Williamson is trying to do.

Offense Chandler Woodham will be back on the field this season at quarterback, but in somewhat of a different role.

He’s used to handing the ball off, but Williamson saw glimpses of what he can do with his arm last season.

With the pro-style

offense this year, Woodham will be able to showcase his arm strength and accuracy while having the freedom to use his feet when needed.

Returning offensive linemen Devin Dye and Dalton Savage — along with Caleb Frady, who didn’t play last year — will have their work cut out for them in protecting Woodham in this new offense.

Jack Robinson, a 6-foot-6 tight end, will be a big target on the edge for Woodham.

Outside at the receiver position, Julian Hazen and Ben Jones will be working to get open for Woodham.

Evan Abernathy will be used as a running back.

Defense Defense is where Lumpkin County may struggle this season.

After losing several players, the Indians will have to find a way to make up for the lack of experience.

Williamson says he has “revamped everything,” though, so it may just be a new system for everybody to learn anyway.

Kevin Harkins, who is just a sophomore but still one of the more experienced players on defense, is back at linebacker after playing there last year as a freshman.

“We’re looking forward to him getting even better throughout the season,” Williamson said. “He’s still very young, still learning.

But he’s a hard worker and

takes coaching.”

One of the other more experienced players on the defense will be Jonas Ramirez at safety, where he played last season.

Williamson says the coaching staff is excited because of his ability to make plays in the secondary while also being able to come inside and stop the run.

Josh Chastain will be the leader on the defensive line, but he is also considered a vocal leader on the team. He’ll be joined by newcomer Jahill Jolie.

Special Teams Wesley Wells will be back to kick for the Indians.

The coaching staff is excited about that after he made two 48-yard field goals last season, Williamson said. He is coming off a knee injury, but Williamson expects his leg to be back to normal by game time.

Outlook Both the offensive and defensive lines will be where Lumpkin County needs to make a difference. The Indians have the size and experience to protect their quarterback in a new offensive scheme, and the defensive line will be tasked with attacking the opponent.

As long as the team is able to adjust to the new style of play, the Indians should be fine this season.

After a winless season in 2015, the Chestatee High football team produced a 4-7 record and playoff appearance in Shaun Conley’s first year.

The Wear Eagles came away pleased, Conley said, but not close to satisfied.

Instead, Chestatee views last season’s turnaround as simply the first step toward building a championship program. With a roster fully acclimated to his system and senior star power at the offensive skill positions, Conley foresees another jump forward in Year 2.

“Last year, everything was brand new,” he said. “We really didn’t know what to expect out of the gate with anything. This year, I think that one full year of being in this program and trying to establish our plan is a big advantage.”

Despite losing 12 seniors and returning only a handful of entrenched starters, Conley said the War Eagles have plenty of players who received solid experience last year.

That depth will need to manifest, especially in the defensive front, if Chestatee is to take the next step toward a championship this season. Yet offensive explosion alone might be enough for the War Eagles to improve on last year’s fourth-place finish in Region 7-4A.

OFFENSE Conley’s spread offense should run quite smoothly with productive seniors at each skill position.

Storm Yarbrough returns at quarterback after amassing more than 2,000 total yards last season. Conley said he “saw the light bulb” come on for Yarbrough during the final month of the offseason, and the coaching staff is expecting big things from its signal-caller.

He’ll have the luxury of dynamic 1,300yard rusher Nick Lyles, who is also skilled as a receiver and pass blocker. Replacing leading receiver Baylee Camp will be 6-foot-2 slot man Reggie James, who Conley said has the best hands on the team, and returning starter Seth Presley.

Sophomore Seth Sertain is sliding down from guard to center to replace Barron King at a position of great importance for the offensive line.

“We moved him to center because our center makes a lot of the calls for us up front,” Conley said.

“He’s very intelligent.

The experience that he had as a starter last year, we felt it would be our best move there. He has Conley done a great job so far.”

Junior tackle Josh Hamilton is the other returning starter on the offensive line, and junior guard Juaquin Aguileras also saw valuable playing time last season. The other spots are up for grabs.

Chestatee will be mostly starting over with its front seven, but experience in the secondary should keep opposing passers in check.

Senior defensive back Charles Jackson and sophomore safety Matthew Jarrard started all 11 games for the War Eagles last season. The secondary also includes a crop of other players who started a few games a year ago.

Graduated players Austin Gean (160 tackles) and Nick Beard (104) leave a huge vacancy at linebacker, one that will be filled by a pair of seniors. James will put his 230pound frame to work as a two-way player, while Micah Flanagan — a catcher for the school’s baseball team who joined the football squad this year — will serve as an inside linebacker.

The defensive line will be comprised of entirely new starters this season, and Conley chose not to mention any specific players leading the way due to the ongoing competition.

“Fortunately for us, we saw most of them last year, so we know kind of what to expect out of those guys,” Conley said. “But defensively, we’re focusing on trying to get the right people in the right spots.”

The offense figures to be a fine-tuned machine with firepower and experience at every level, but a few players need to step up on the defensive front if the War Eagles want to avoid a shootout every week.

The White County football team is trying to muster up the confidence to go out on the field and believe it has a chance at a successful season. The Warriors, coming off a 1-9 season, will have to do that with a new head coach in Tim Cokely.

“We’ve got a bunch of guys that have really worked hard since I got here in February just to try and get us on the right track,” Cokely said. “I guess if you’re not optimistic this time of year you’re never going to be optimistic.”

Cokely Regardless of last season’s record, though, Cokely believes he has inherited a group of upperclassmen that can get the job done.

He said he can see and feel its determination to turn things around and help the program succeed.

The Warriors’ new coach from Florida has twice before coached in Georgia.

In 2009 and 2010, he went 17-5 at Greater Atlanta Christian. Before that, he coached Colquitt County to a 14-18 mark in 2005-2007.

With 17 years as a coach in Florida, Cokely’s combined career record is 146-65.

Offense On the offensive side of the ball, White County will have a first-year starter at

quarterback. Before this season, Jordan Palmer hadn’t started in a single game at the varsity level.

The biggest asset to the offense and maybe even the team is Kaleb Crane.

He’s a four-year starter with plenty of experience to help the Warriors at the running back position. He’s been a big part of the program over the years, but with the switch to more of a spread offense, he may not see quite as much action as in previous seasons. But with his experience and talent, Cokely is sure to utilize him at any point.

Leading the way for Crane to run will be an offensive line filled with seniors.

Jon Burkett, one of the biggest on the line, is back.

He moved from guard to tackle, but with the amount of experience he has on the line, it shouldn’t be much of a problem adjusting. He’ll be joined by Nakia Anthony at center, who is someone Cokely says the team is depending on up front.

“We really believe in our kids and we believe in our team,” Cokely said. “So we’re looking forward to it and think we’ve got a good squad.”

Defense The defense is much of the same, when it comes to the linemen. Jay Lepkoske should be the one who emerges as a leader

on the line and the team in general.

While the defensive backs may not have quite as much experience as the offense, it still has Ty Ulrich. He’ll be at the cornerback position, where he is experienced and can provide a stable force on defense. Michael Mintz will help out at linebacker for the Warriors.

Special Teams Brett Bardenwerper, an all-state kicker, returns this year as a senior to handle the kicking duties. Cokely says he’s consistently sending kickoffs to the end zone and made a 54-yard field goal last season.

Outlook Besides having a firstyear quarterback, Cokely says the biggest difficulty for him this season will be making sure his team is tough on the field. Put simply, he said the players are nice — which also happens to be his favorite thing about this year’s team.

He believes in their athleticism and skill but wants to make sure the team is able to play aggressively when the time comes.

“There’s a lot of grit here and we need to show it,” Cokely said. “Our guys are really, really nice but when we step across the line, we need to be a tough, physical football team.”

EAST HALL vikings 2016 results: 3-7, 1-5 Region 7-3A key players

Austin Parker Sr. QB (5-11, 184) The Times’ 2016 Player of the Year will engineer one of the most potent offenses in the area as both a pure passer and a leader. The Vikings will go as far as Parker takes them.

Growing from the past Sedrion Morse Sr. WR (6-3, 205) After hauling in 11 touchdowns and nearly 1,000 yards as a secondary option last year, Morse is poised to put up huge numbers as East Hall’s go-to receiver.

Cambren Harrison Sr. RB (5-11, 230) If Harrison can bring some balance to the offense by moving the chains on the ground, Parker will shred defenses wary of the run game.

Vikings learning from losing close games in 2016

The Vikings finished on the wrong end of every tight contest they played, with three of their seven losses coming by a combined 10 points. Those bad breaks ended up costing the team a playoff spot and a winning season.

“I think we’re kind of angry about last year as a whole,” Vikings coach Bryan Gray said. “I think it has really improved our focus and the kids and coaches’ commitment to be the best we can be ... It really left a bad taste in our mouth. Since January when we started again, I’ve really seen a buy-in like I’ve never seen before among our kids.”

With newfound drive, 15 returning starters and a strong senior class, East Hall may not have to worry about too many close games at all this season.

But the ultimate goal is to get back to the playoffs after an unexpectedly bumpy season, the team’s first below .500 since 2010.

This year’s seniors made postseason appearances in 2014 and 2015, and Gray said they’re leading the charge to get back there in their final go-round.

“We’re going to have to rely on some freshmen and sophomores to get ready to play,” the 11th-year coach said.

“Our seniors have done a real good job of preparing them and guiding them to get ready to play for us on Friday night.”

A good start in region play will be key to a playoff push — back-to-back trips to Greater Atlanta Christian and Dawson County, though separated by an open date, make for a tough October stretch.

They’re tough to prepare for that reason, and not that reason alone, but especially because they get the ball in space to a number of guys who have a chance to go score with it. And they can do some things Conley defensively because they are so athletic. That makes them tough to prepare for.”

The Vikings averaged 34 points per game last year, but their explosive offense could be even better in 2017 with nine returning starters.

It all starts with senior quarterback Austin Parker, who threw for 27 touchdowns and more than 2,700 yards last season to become The Times’ Player of the Year.

Gray expects Parker to improve on his already stellar numbers, and the signalcaller has plenty of tools at his disposal.

Junior Cambren Harrison headlines a stable of four running backs that should complement East Hall’s explosive passing attack.

“It’s probably the deepest we’ve been at running back,” Gray said.

Despite losing senior playmaker Markese Jackson, the Vikings return every other guy in the receiving corps.

Eight to 10 players have a shot to see the field, Gray said, with senior Sedrion Morse (49 catches, 927 yards, 11 touchdowns last season) expected to reprise his role as a deep threat.

The offensive line will feature five players who started three or more games last year, anchored by seniors Isaiah Jenkins (guard) and Andrew Crawford (tackle).

The remaining starters in this solid group are juniors: center Athyn Thurmond, guard Daniel Restrepo and tackle Gio Rebollar.

“We like their potential; how fast they gel is going to be the challenge,” Gray said. “ …

The offense has potential to be very strong.

If we put the work in and stay healthy, then we can have one of those top offenses.”

DEFENSE East Hall has plenty of room for improvement on defense, and it starts in the secondary.

Senior free safety Austin Brock figures to be a dominant force against both the run and the pass, while small-but-scrappy senior cornerbacks Giezi Barrientos and James Stoudenmire will be tasked with stopping opposing passing attacks.

The linebackers will be led by senior Jacob Wade, who Gray hopes can be a dominant force in the trenches. Senior Amir Ellison will seek to generate a greater pass rush for the Vikings, who allowed 42.5 points per game last season.

Then there’s the defensive line, which Gray called “a great unknown.” East Hall must replace the entire unit, and its coach declined to name frontrunners because of the wide-open competition.

“We’ve got some kids there that we think could be good players, we just have to get them ready,” Gray said.

SPECIAL TEAMS The uncertainty extends to special teams, where the Vikings are holding an open competition at kicker. Brock and junior running back/defensive back Andrew Randall are the leading candidates to return kicks, though other players are in the mix.

Parker will serve as punter and the only sure thing on special teams.

OUTLOOK East Hall is in good hands with Parker taking snaps, and he should be well-protected while spreading the ball around to the team’s numerous athletes. If the defense can play opportunistic football and limit big plays, there’s no reason the Vikings can’t claim a playoff spot out of the difficult Region 7-3A.

Dawson County coach Sid Maxwell is simply ready to get back on the field and start this season.

“I’ve been doing this long enough, I have a passion for what I do,” Maxwell said. “So any time it’s football season, I’m just excited because it’s football season.”

But he said in his position, patience is what it takes.

After being hit hard by graduation, Maxwell is slowly building his program back up and helping his players with less experience get more whenever possible.

He says it takes patience because he knows the team is going to make mistakes this season will take things in stride.

Even when mistakes come, as long as each player does his job and does his best not to further the mistake on the field, Maxwell will be happy.

“You have to be patient,” Maxwell said. “Experience is something you get by playing.”

Offense On the offensive side of the ball, Coey Watson will be back to lead the team at quarterback.

Maxwell said Watson has been the “centerpiece” of the Tigers’ offense since he took over at quarterback as a freshman. Now a senior, Watson will be a valuable part of the team with an abundance of experience.

Protecting Watson is a fairly new offensive line that hasn’t seen much varsity starting time. Behind the line, Sevaughn Clarke and Shawn Thomas will share the running back duties while Ryan Glass, Ethan Cameron, Chance Armstrong, Connor Bearden and Hunter Barron share the wide receiver roles.

With the exception of Watson and Glass, coach Maxwell says none of his players on offense have started a game, so he’s excited to see what they have to offer when it comes to game time.

“For me as a coach, the challenges are there and we get excited about that,” Maxwell said. “And we’re ready for competition.”

Defense Dawson County brings back safety Logan Barnes and cornerback Noah Brock.

Maxwell is looking for these two to be leaders on the defense as they are the only ones with much experience on defense.

Inside linebackers new

to the starting role will be Nate Umberger and Logan Brumbelow, while Wyatt Hayes and Walker Cox will settle in at outside linebacker.

Helping out on the defensive side of the ball are returning starters Taylor Swofford and Zach Logan.

Joining them will be TJ Wilson, Jason Browning and Ethan Smith.

Maxwell will be watching each position closely to see how they are progressing throughout the season.

“We’ve got some guys that as the season goes on, we’ll re-evaluate and hopefully we’ll get better each day,” Maxwell said.

Special Teams Peyton Allen will be back as the placekicker for the Tigers, while the punter position is wide open.

Maxwell said players are still competing for that responsibility, but they’ve narrowed it down to a few.

Outlook Having success two years in a row is somewhat of a double-edged sword.

On one hand, this year’s team feels confident that it will have success again and wants to go out on the field and prove it.

On the other hand, though, there is a hint of worry that he team won’t do as well as previous years.

“I think the foundation is here to allow us to be competitive,” Maxwell said.

Jason Roquemore chooses to focus on where his Johnson High football team is headed rather than where it is right now.

The coach is sticking to that approach following a winless 2016, a bumpy start to the Knights’ transition to a region schedule. And with a team of mostly underclassmen taking the field this year, Roquemore is especially emphasizing week-to-week improvement instead of wins and losses.

“A lot of those kids are going to get some valuable grass time this fall,” he said. “I’m excited about our future and where we’re going …. We’ve got our work cut out for us, but I feel good about the direction we’re heading and the things that we’re doing.”

Last year’s “growing pains” weren’t completely surprising, Roquemore said, considering his team was inexperienced at several key spots while jumping into the tough Region 8-5A. Roquemore hopes an arduous non-region schedule featuring local clubs like West Hall and East Hall will have his team prepared when the region slate begins Sept. 22 against Flowery Branch. Whether that means a playoff appearance this year is irrelevant to Johnson’s long-term plans.

“We’re going to have some kids this year that I think it’s going to be a process for them early on. They’re going to make some mistakes,” the sixth-year coach said. “But we have a lot of potential as we get into this year and next year to have a chance to be pretty good.”

OFFENSE For all the youth Johnson will rely on this season, that’s not the case at quarterback.

Junior Sam Corbett is beginning his third season as the starting signal-caller. Roquemore said the game is starting to slow down for Corbett, which should improve his decision-making as the engineer of the Knights’ option offense.

Four players are in line to receive carries this season, with sophomore Nolan Bullock serving as the frontrunner. Senior David Rivera leads a receiving corps that will be expected to block as well as get open.

Senior tight end Rolando Guerrero should provide a stabilizing presence on the outside, and Roquemore hopes sophomore guard Dimetrio Landaverde (6-foot-2, 260 pounds) will be the anchor of the interior line.

“We’ll be as good as we play up front,” Roquemore said. “ …. It’s going to be one of those things where, collectively, they have to play well. With us and the things we’re trying to do, we’re going to have to be able to run the football if we’re going to be successful.”

DEFENSE Four starters return to a defense that gave up more than 42 points per game last season, and Roquemore said the line will be crucial for a stronger unit.

Though the defensive line lacks a senior, Platinum Thompson figures to be a dominant force in the middle. The Knights hope their 5-foot-10, 290-pound junior can serve as a space-eating nose tackle to shut down opposing rushing attacks.

Junior Ezequiel Velasquez and Guerrero, a two-way player, will be defensive leaders from their linebacker spots, responsible for bringing along the front seven and a crop of young defensive backs.

Roquemore was hesitant to name starters in the secondary but remained optimistic that the “rep-for-rep” competition will produce some solid players.

OUTLOOK Roquemore is confident in his squad’s long-term direction, though youth all over the field may prevent the Knights from taking substantial steps in the win column. But if the small senior class provides leadership and Corbett properly executes the option, Johnson could be consistently competitive and capable of an upset or two.

Head coach Benji Harrison can’t stop talking about how confident his team is as it heads into this season.

“We’ve got a team that’s excited,” Harrison said.

“A confident team. I think we’ve got a bunch of guys who think they can win.”

With the amount of returning players he has, there’s plenty of reason to be confident.

Experience alone will give Habersham Central an advantage over opponents in the early games of the season. Not to mention, the level Harrison of talent each of those experienced players has will give an extra boost to an already confident team.

Offense The offense is where Habersham Central will shine this season. Harrison said the team “has the tools” to be explosive from the start.

AJ Curry comes back as a dual-threat quarterback this season.

He’s able to tuck the ball and run when needed, just as well as he can throw it downfield.

On the offensive line, Habersham Central brings back four out of five players, so it’s safe to say the backfield will be protected.

Harrison is happy with his running back corps and believes it will succeed this season, especially with the line up front.

“At running back, we’re kind of a three-headed monster,” Harrison said.

“We’ve got three guys that roll and are very similar in how they play, but all of them have a unique skill set as well.”

Defense The biggest defensive difference between last season and this season is speed.

Harrison said his team is much faster after gaining experience last year and working hard during the summer.

“I feel like in the secondary we do a good job of keeping things in front of us,” Harrison said. “We’re not as worried about people running and getting behind us.”

With a strong secondary, the Raiders will be able to be more aggressive from the start by rushing the quarterback and trying to get to the ball quicker than other teams.

A couple of the defensive linemen are returning,

including Andrew Lovell.

Harrison said Lovell has put on about 25 pounds, which will add much needed size to the line. A new face on the defensive line, though, is Greg Wiley.

According to Harrison, he’s a 6-foot-2, 290-pound sophomore who will be a force on the defensive line.

Also returning for the Raiders are Carson Taylor and Garrett Kinsey at linebacker.

Special Teams After Hampton Hothard graduated, Habersham Central didn’t waste any time in finding a replacement. Carlos Escamilla will handle the kicking and punting duties for the Raiders during the upcoming season.

Outlook Habersham Central doesn’t plan on changing much about the way it plays the game. They will just be bigger and faster, which should pay dividends as the season progresses.

“Hopefully we’re just a little better at what we do,” Harrison said.

With so much experience and size on both sides of the ball, Habersham Central will be able to break out with big plays on offense, while stopping opposing teams from scoring.

Lakeview Academy eager to see if it has what it takes to make the playoffs

At Lakeview Academy, it’s business as usual when it comes to play on the field for the upcoming season.

Quarterback Alec Bornhorst is in his senior season and will lead the team in the passing game once again. The Lions’ game plan for the season — pass first, run second.

Bornhorst and the majority of the offense will play on the defensive side of the ball, as well, which Lakeview Academy coach Matthew Gruhn said has been the biggest struggle in years past. At a Class A school, Gruhn has to make sure his players are conditioned well enough to play on both sides of the ball, and that’s something he’s paying special attention to this year.

He’s confident, though, after having a successful summer of training with his players.

He knows they’re experienced enough to run plays easily and conditioned enough to avoid fatigue.

But there’s always room to get better.

“We’re trying to keep improving and hopefully do something that hasn’t been done here before,” Gruhn said.

Offense

The Lions return many players on offense, but none more important than Bornhorst.

With Bornhorst under center, the Lions will look to pass the ball as frequently as possible. He has the experience needed to do well and should be able to produce big numbers in his senior season.

Helping him on the outside will be junior wide receiver KJ Millwood. Having a reliable target in Millwood will give Bornhorst the confidence to throw the ball, but an emphasis this season is setting up the run.

Senior Dillon Knepp will be in the backfield when needed, and sometimes when least expected. Offensive lineman Tyler Gerhart, a senior, will clear the way for Knepp and help protect Bornhorst as a leader on the offensive line.

Experience on offense is the biggest advantage Gruhn sees on this year’s roster, and it’s what he hopes will help the team outlast opponents.

“It’s nice to have a lot of guys back so there’s really nothing new,” Gruhn said.

Defense

The linebacker corps of seniors JD Roark and Will Drury will be the strength in containing opposing offenses and attacking at the line of scrimmage. Both players bring much-needed experience to the defense and will be able to lead the team while on the field.

They will be joined by sophomore Jordan Thomas at defensive back, who will bring additional help to the secondary.

Special Teams Lakeview lost a lot of talent with kicker Jack Perkins’ graduation. The team is still looking for someone to fill the spot he left, but it has been narrowed down to a few players.

Outlook The Lions bring a lot of players back this season, making experience the biggest strength for this year’s team. They have been through the schedule and have the talent to win games in a tough region.

On top of the experience the players have, Bornhorst will be someone teams have to plan for. He can just about do it all and will definitely show that in his senior season.

Gruhn is just ready to start the season and see where this team goes.

“That would be a point of emphasis,” Gruhn said. “To be able to start well and kind of get some momentum going.”

It didn’t take long for first-year coach Nick Garrett to fall in love with the location of Riverside Military Academy, and how the general atmosphere and military structure of the school is geared toward bettering the kids.

Now it’s his turn to combine his coaching philosophy with what he identifies as an already cohesive Eagles unit at Riverside — those players both new and returning — in order to help turn around a program that has only won a combined three games in the previous two seasons. The Eagles (2-8 in 2016) finished next-to-last in the final Region 8-A standings in 2016 and have not made the playoffs since 2009.

For starters, according to Garrett, it’s all about identifying the small victories each day: Being on time, clean uniforms, finishing homework — and focusing on the variables you can control.

“As far as the staff and myself, I always talk about controlling your controllables,” said Garrett, the sixth head football coach hired in the last 11 seasons at Riverside.

“I can’t change anything about last year, I don’t care what you bring to the table from last year. It’s a clean slate. We’re gonna control what we can, which is right now.

We can’t do anything about the past, or the former seasons or anything like that. So we’re gonna do what we can now to be better prepared for the next day.”

Garrett, a transplant from Oxnard, Calif., is an energetic and offensive-minded coach, known for molding nine junior college first team All-Americans and 10 Academic All-Americans at previous stops in his career. He has experience at the Division II, NAIA and junior college levels. And in his position at East Los Angeles Junior College, Garrett helped the team win a conference title and its first bowl game in 54 years.

Garrett also expressed excitement in the fact this year’s camp drew 50 kids, a testament to the chemistry and culture this Eagles’ coach and his staff have been able to grow for the last month.

“You can’t start any kind of process without any solid foundation,” Garrett added.

“You have to have a solid foundation, and that’s kind of what we build off of.”

OFFENSE Aside from changing the culture, Garrett plans to mold an up-tempo, hurry-up style offense around the players already in place at Riverside Military. The next variable to lead the charge comes at quarterback, currently a two-player position battle, according to Garrett. With the departure of four-year starter Lyle Lopez, junior Isaac Teasley and senior Cameron Mulvehill make up the pair in the passing game, with one to be named starter in the coming weeks.

At running back, Garrett is also expecting good things from Stephen Aleandre, a returning starter and dynamic leader on and off the field. Another familiar

face to share carries could also be the versatile Charles Dimnwaobi. The senior is an all-around talent who will handle kick return duties, as well as see action at wide receiver beside either Teasley or Mulvehill.

DEFENSE The Eagles will line up in a 4-2-5 formation on defense, starting with Victor Pittman headlining the linebacking corps.

Junior defensive end Harry Kim is a returning All-Region playmaker who Garrett said wasted little time in the weight room in preparation for another big season on the defensive side. Senior team captain Ebube Alfred-Igbokwe should be lining up beside Kim in the trenches, as well.

Dimnwaobi, Teasley and camp standout Miles Thomas at nickle will make up an athletic Eagles secondary.

SPECIAL TEAMS Although it is always expected to be sound in all three phases, Garrett is especially looking for the special teams to be well versed this season. The coach said there has been an ongoing battle for the kicking and punting duties all summer, but indicated it should come down to either

OUTLOOK Riverside Military didn’t have the most ideal transition in the Single-A classification in 2016.

Garrett clearly brings a spark and an exciting new philosophy to the program.

It’s only a matter of how quickly he can turn things around in his first season.

John Ford vowed he’s not going to overhaul the Buford High football team’s style of play in his first season as coach.

“A lot of it is going to look the same,” Ford said. “We’re going to play great defense; that’s not going to change. We’re going to be physical at the point of attack; that’s not going to change.”

If that promise applies to wins, as well, the Wolves will be just fine under his command.

Buford still figures to be one of the state’s powerhouse programs even after the departure of Jess Simpson, who guided the team to 10 straight championship games and seven titles before leaving this offseason.

Ford is now the caretaker of this dynasty, which has welcomed him with open arms after he compiled a similar track record with back-to-back state runner-up finishes at Roswell High.

“The transition to Buford has just been great. The community is great, the kids are great, the coaches are great,” Ford said.

“Everything Coach Simpson did was phenomenal and best-of-the-best. I’m just really thrilled and humbled to be here.”

The Wolves open the season Aug. 18 against Class 7A Hillgrove High as part of the Corky Kell Classic before hosting three out-of-state schools. They round out the non-region schedule with a huge showdown against recent South Carolina state champion, South Pointe High, out of Rock Hill.

Then Buford will begin Region 8-5A play eyeing a return to the state championship game, where it lost 16-7 to Rome High last season.

With two running backs committed to Division I schools and another entertaining similar offers, the Wolves will have no shortage of offensive firepower. Pair that with solid depth on defense, and Buford should be right back in title contention for the 11th straight season.

When asked what style of offense he’s planning to employ, Ford simply said, “We’re going to get the best ballplayers the ball.”

In that case, Anthony Grant and Christian Turner are likely in for a whole lot of touches.

Both Grant (a Tennessee commit) and Turner (a Michigan commit) topped 1,000 rushing yards last season and are likely to do so as seniors this year. Derrian Brown, a junior who holds offers from several major Division I programs, is another threat in the backfield.

About eight players are competing to start on a depleted offensive line, which lost The Times’ All-Area selections Dean Powell and Garrett Scoggins to graduation.

Among the frontrunners are seniors Austin Blake, Logan Kesler and Bailey Crews; juniors Harry Miller, Riley Simonds, Reece McIntyre and Carter Colquitt; and sophomore Seth McLaughlin.

“Offensively, we lost a bunch,” Ford said.

“But to me, that’s irrelevant because things are new from a terminology and verbiage standpoint.”

DEFENSE Seniors Brock Mattison and Mick Reese are expected to anchor the Wolves’ defensive line, which is known for being stout against the run.

The graduation of linebackers TD Roof and Jake Simpson — now on the rosters at Georgia Tech and Wake Forest, respectively — leaves a huge hole at the second level that Buford plans to address with depth. Ford said about 12 players are getting meaningful reps at the position.

Ford is perhaps most optimistic about the secondary, which brings back experienced players like junior safety Kellen Neal, senior cornerback Mikey McMorris and junior defensive back Jamaal Singleton.

Even without many entrenched starters returning from last season’s defense, the Wolves know they can rely on depth at every level.

“Coach Simpson and his whole defensive staff last year did a really good job rolling guys in,” Ford said. “ … One of the strengths of the staff that was in place last year was the depth they created on the defensive side of the ball. I’m certainly grateful for that.”

Buford is deep at kick returner, too, with a long list of candidates to man the position.

Grant, Brown, Johnson, Singleton and junior receiver/defensive back Austin Turner should all have a shot to return kicks.

Junior Hayden Olsen is set to handle all kicking duties. Quentin Skinner, a junior, will compete for the long snapper job alongside classmate JC Vega.

OUTLOOK Though it’s unclear what kind of schemes Ford will employ on each side of the ball, he inherits one of the best rosters in the state.

And judging from Ford’s quick rebuild at Roswell, he’s more than qualified to deploy the talent at Buford.

The Wolves are the unquestioned favorites to repeat as Region 8-5A champions, and they undoubtedly want to add a state championship after falling short in Atlanta for back-to-back seasons. Depth should help Buford address vacancies left by last year’s senior class, and from there the team has enough top-flight talent to win it all in 2017.
