PROPERTY MANAGEMENT NEWS

DEAR RESIDENTS: Dear Residents, We cannot believe summer is coming to an end, and the pool will be closing! The Millview pool closes on September 3 (Labor Day), and the Lakeview pool is closed during the week after Labor Day and closes on September 9 for the season. We need your help with street parking! We have had complaints from the bus drivers that they are having trouble navigating around parked cars. Please refrain from parking on the street as this creates a safety hazard. Fall is a great time of year with the (hopefully) cooler temperatures to complete some outside projects. Please remember you need to submit a Modification Form for any exterior changes. The form can be found online at hmill.com. If you have any questions just contact the management office. Thanks and Happy Labor Day, Maureen Murphy and Chris Shanks

RESIDENT COLUMN

PERSONALIZED SERVICE IN A TECHNOLOGY FILLED WORLD Real estate has become one of those businesses where almost everything done involves some sort of technology. Years ago, when someone decided to buy a home, they’d call their best friend’s Aunt Gertrude who had been in real estate since 1965 and knew the area like the back of her hand. Aunt Gertrude would meet up with them in person, and figure out exactly what they were looking for. Then she would pour through stacks of home listings and decide which ones fit her clients’ needs. It was definitely a long process, but that is what ultimately found the buyers their perfect home and also started an agent/client relationship. Once a home was found and a contract was written (handwritten, by-the-way), the contracts would be delivered to the cooperating agent for negotiations and signatures, and a deal was created. Numerous phone calls & client appointments were made, homes were sold and closed, and in the process, actual friendships between the clients and agents were born. Then came the dawn of the internet. Within years, numerous real estate apps were popping up everywhere – Zillow, Redfin, Trulia… the list goes on and on. Information is at everyone’s fingertips. When people begin the home buying process, they look for available homes online, and many people don’t even talk with an agent until they have already scoped out the homes they want to see. Just like that, personalized service became a part of the past. Unfortunately, this new process does not always create the best environment for buying or selling your home. However, buying or selling your home SHOULD be personal. A home is a purchase that is completely different than buying a patio set on Amazon. Your home is where you lounge in your pajamas watching latenight TV. It’s where you make breakfast for your kids on Saturday mornings and where you host back yard cookouts. It’s where you plant flowers and where you bury your pets. It’s your HOME. Personalized service is important. I get to know the people I am working for. I like knowing their grandmother is celebrating her 99th birthday next week. I want to know what their kid’s favorite video game is and how many years they’ve been on the neighborhood swim team. I want to know how many family Thanksgiving dinners they’ve hosted in the dining room, and the funny story about the crazy squirrel that lives in the back yard.

6 | HOMETOWN HERALD | September 2018

Those personal stories that turned their house into a home can be the very key that helps me sell their home and even perhaps find their next home. Personalized service also makes people more accountable. Make sure you meet with your agent more than just your initial meeting. Don’t let them just send a generic text or email when you have questions. Meet with your agent every few weeks to discuss action plans and feedback. That will help both you and your agent work better together. And make sure your agent takes the time to listen to your concerns and come up with a game plan together. Communication is key. In real estate, even though an agent is helping other people buy and sell their homes, it’s still a very personal experience for everyone involved. And because it’s personal, your agent should appreciate and respect it as much as you do.

THIS IS MORE THAN JUST AN ATHLETE. This is Colby—a son, a star running back and a straight A student who is looking forward to starting college next Fall. His parents trust GMC Sports Medicine, which includes the most sports medicine fellowship-trained doctors in Georgia, as well as the groundbreaking GMC Concussion Institute. With a member of the state’s largest team of certified athletic trainers placed directly in his school, they are confident that GMC is providing world class care right there where Colby needs it. Colby’s goal is to make this season a memorable one. At Gwinnett Medical Center, we make that possible.

He’s more than just a patient. To schedule an appointment for a baseline concussion test, call the Concussion Institute at 678-312-7880.

RECIPE

SLOW COOKED PORK Perfect for Busy Families Braised Pork Buns with Quick Pickled Cucumbers & Bean Sprouts Yields 11 servings

Ingredients

For pork: 2 teaspoons grapeseed or canola oil 3 pounds Boston butt, cut into 3 pieces along natural muscle separation, trimmed of surface fat 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/4 cup vermouth, rice wine or dry sherry 21/2 cups thinly sliced red cabbage 1 small onion, sliced (about 1 cup) 3 tablespoons molasses (or honey) 2 tablespoons reduced sodium soy sauce 2 tablespoons minced garlic 2 tablespoons minced ginger 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds For cucumbers: 1 tablespoon honey 1/8 teaspoon salt 3 tablespoons rice vinegar 2 large cucumbers, peeled, cut in half lengthwise, seeded with a spoon, thinly sliced 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

To assemble: 11 soft whole-wheat hamburger buns 23/4 cups mungbean sprouts

Directions

1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the oil. Season the pork on all sides with salt and pepper. When oil begins to shimmer, add pork and brown on all sides, about 4 minutes per side. Add browned pork to a slow cooker. Off of the heat, add the vermouth and then place on low heat, scraping up any brown bits from the bottom of the skillet with a wooden spoon. Add contents of the skillet to the slow cooker, along with cabbage, onion, molasses, soy sauce, garlic, ginger, and sesame seeds. Cover and cook on high for 1 hour; then reduce heat to low and cook for 4 hours (alternatively, cook the pork on low for the entire duration, 6 to 7 hours). 2. To make the cucumbers: One hour before serving, in a medium bowl, stir and dissolve the honey and salt into the rice vinegar and then add the cucumbers and pepper. Chill. 3. To assemble: Toast the buns cut side up under a broiler or in a toaster oven. Fill the buns with pork, drained cucumbers and bean sprouts.
