GROUNDS AND FACILITIES UPDATE: Hotlanta:

We can count on heat and humidity here. The Millview and Lakeview pools offer relief and fun. We hope everyone enjoyed the pools this season. The additional filtration systems installed in the off season have improved the water quality this season. The new decking and landscaping at Millview have given a much needed facelift to this 20+ year old facility. All of our buildings were painted this spring and flooring replacement will be the next phase of maintenance for the clubhouse. We ask that homeowners help us keep our facilities in great shape. Swimmers are restricted from the main clubhouse. The pool bathroom facilities are kept unlocked for swimmers. Please use the garbage cans available and pick up after your family and guests before you leave.

Rain, rain, go away!

We had a lot of rain this June. With rains comes run off. The lake dredge was just completed and it was a huge success. The rains in June brought a lot of debris into the lake that has overwhelmed our new lake management company. The trash in the lake is a continuing problem and we need your help! Some of the debris is just mother nature, however, much is man-made. Trash in the street makes its way into the storm drains and many of these drains go into our lake. It does not just miraculously disappear. If your lot has a stream in the back, please dispose of your yard debris responsibly. Many cut tree logs have made their way into the lake along with lumber. Erosion from the deluges enters the lake and results in silt. Please shore up any eroding areas and mulch to help keep erosion down. August is the month that G&F begins the budget process for next year. We will be reviewing projects completed and prioritizing future projects to maintain the community. As always, if there is anything you see that needs attention please contact G&F through hmill.com. Go to the Grounds and Facilities committee and there is tab with a form to fill out. This goes to the property manager, G&F chair, and BOD G&F liaison.

HAMILTON MILL’S Independence Day Extravaganza Hamilton Mill celebrated the 4th of July in major style… and with a little bit of rain… this year! The weather certainly didn’t stop the fun and residents of all ages enjoyed the festivities. We started at 4:00 on the Lakeview pool deck with DJ Dan spinning some tunes and playing pool games and trivia. We had awesome prizes to giveaway, including Regal Cinemas and iTunes gift cards! We served FREE(dom) popcorn and the Fruit Smashers Food Truck was a major hit! We also had Bubba on deck with Balloon Animals, the Live Parrots and a Magic show in the clubhouse! Our friends with the Grubbin’ Out food truck broke down 10 miles away and arrived fashionably late being towed in… just in time for a lot of HUNGRY neighbors and friends. All-in-all, it was a blast!

Speaking of a blast… I think this was the biggest and best Fireworks show Hamilton Mill has ever seen! After the pool party, people gathered on the basketball courts and common areas to dance and sing along to R&B Inc. Band. They were amazing jamming out to hit songs from the 60’s to now…. Now I CAN go for that (yes, there was some Hall and Oates action)! They played Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA” right before the fireworks began... talk about giving you chills! The fireworks show lasted 15 minutes with amazing views over the lake. After the fireworks, the band continued to play and the weather held out for a great evening! Thank you so much to Gwinnett County PD and the Fire Marshall for your help during this event. Thank you to those that brought food items for the HMUMC Food Pantry and a huge shout out to our sponsor, Hermes Realty Group. Thanks for hanging out with us and for all the great beach balls!

TENNIS NEWS

from Jeff Dudacek, Director of Tennis The long stretch from spring to summer leagues turn into a grind, and finally comes August. The heat stayed away until July, which is a blessing when you are playing the long three set matches. It is the down time for all the leagues before the fall session begins. It is time to catch our breath and get ready for fall programing. The kids go back to school in the first week of August. That makes it a short summer. The courts are full of Flex league matches and the Hamilton Mill Singles league during this month. Make sure you book your courts accordingly. Also, if you are behind a match, give them a little extra time to finish. That is the neighborly thing to do. August brings a close to all the junior summer tennis camps. Summer is still about the kids and Hamilton Mill kids were a big part of summer tennis. We had tennis camps for ages 4-12 years old. Kemp Academy kept the kids training all day on the courts and also had 10 and under class in the afternoons. Look for the Labor Day Round-Robin and the Fall Alta Camp. HAMILTON MILL TENNIS WINS AGAIN Someone said, “We are going to win so much, we are going to get tired of winning.” Hamilton Mill Tennis is no stranger to winning. Again this month we are winning again.

w t t b a d

Congratulations to these teams: The Kopanski 14 and USTA junior team are heading to the finals. Hilderhauf 3.0 reached the finals in the USTA Ladies 40 and Over state competition, and were invited to the USTA Sectionals in Alabama. Sowers B3 were the Senior Team City winners. FALL ALTA START DATES Fall Alta starts September 7th-10th. Thursday through Sunday the courts will be very busy in league play. The team coaching and court time will begin the last week in August. PRIVATE LESSONS August is a good month to take a few private lessons to fix that bad stroke that you have been nursing all summer. Another popular lesson is 3 students and the pro. Learn strategy with your own group before the team practice. We have packages with buy 4 one hour lessons and get the 5th one free. Why do you think Roger Federer has as a coach and takes private lessons? BALL MACHINE Did you ever have a hitting partner that doesn’t make comments about your game? Try the ball machine. It is great work-out to fine toon your strokes. You need someone to hit with because you missed your league practice or nobody showed at your practice? The ball machine is perfect. It will not correct your bad stroke but it will give you a work out. It comes with the ball mower to pick up all 200 balls in 5 minutes. The cost is 15.00 for the hour and we also have unlimited monthly and yearly rates. Call or email the Pro Shop to reserve your time. It cannot be reserved on the court scheduler. WHEN TO STRING? The rule of thumb is to take the number of days you play a week–that is how many times you should string your tennis racket per year. Of course you have to factor in bad winters, the elements, leaving your racket in the car and if it hits more than just tennis balls. Sometimes that rule is not for everyone, but you should try to remember to get your racket strung before each league season. Especially before the fall season. Remember, we guarantee a 24 hour turnaround time on all stringing. What neighborhood can match that? FALL ALTA CAMP It is time to get ready to play Fall Alta! Our popular twice-a-year event has had over 50 people attend over the weekend. Come join us for 1 ½ hours of drills followed by an hour of round robin organized by the Pro. Groups will be set by ability and teams will stay together. Don’t get left out! Last year we had some camps fill up before the deadline. 9:30-12:00 Thursday, August 24th (Ladies) 9:30-12:00 Friday, August 25th (Ladies) 9:30-12:00 Saturday, August 26th (men & ladies are separated in different groups) Cost is $20 per session Discount for multiple sessions: 2-10%, 3-20% You must reserve a spot to attend. Email at Milltennis@bellsouth.net or call the shop.

TENNIS TIPS

TENNIS TIPS The volley Do you find yourself missing many volleys or getting lobbed easily when you are at the net? These are common problems that many tennis players face when they are at the net. I’m going to share 4 tips in this article that will help you to boost your tennis volleys and you will see better results in a short period of time. If you are fearless in becoming a ‘NET MONSTER’ or ‘NET MONSTERETTE’ it will go a long way toward dominating the court and win more matches. 1. Switch to Continental grip (Hammer Grip) When you approach the net to hit a volley, you don’t have much time, so you need to switch your grip to the Continental Grip. The reason for this is because it is the single most effective grip that gets your strings facing in the right direction to hit the volley, whether it is coming at you as a backhand or forehand shot.

2. Land the airplane, don’t crash it The volley is a shortened swing and a very simple shot. You are at the net or coming close to it. You don’t have room to make longer arm movements, yet people often try to make it a lot more complex than it is. The most effective way to “hit” a volley, is a short swing but in a gradual high to low progression, like an airplane landing. This will allow the incoming energy in the shot to connect with your racket. There is more than enough energy in that to make your volley masterful. 3. Keep your elbows down, no chicken wings Preparing yourself to receive the volley, the racket is up and below your chin. The elbows are pointing down. This will allow you receive or “catch” the volley on the racket. Having a balanced stance will keep the volley stronger and deeper in the court. If you hold the racket to close and the elbows protrude out like “wings” then you will tend to swing or slap the volley in the net. 4. Follow your volley Most of the time you will need more than one volley to finish the point. The better the players, the harder it is to hit one volley for a winner. Move in the direction of your volley and prepare yourself to hit a second volley. For example, in doubles the returner hits the return down the line toward you at the net. You volley toward the net player but don’t stand there and watch your great shot and miss the floater from your opponent. Next time follow your shot toward the middle and get ready to receive the volley from your opponent. If they return a weak shot, you can volley to the open court for the winner. See ya on the courts!
