There are a number of events planned for residents as well as resident planned events at the Clubhouse. Please remember that all residents must have an Amenity Access Card or be a guest of a resident in order to enter the pool areas. Also, the Rules and Regulations for use of amenities state that membership cards must be presented upon request and states that individuals that do not have a membership card while using any of the amenities will be asked to leave and not return until they have a valid membership card. If you do not have a card and wish obtain one, please contact the Property Management office during the hours of 9 to 5, Monday – Friday. Residents must be current with their assessments for the card to be activated.
Parking
Please use caution when entering and leaving the amenities areas. Please do not park and leave your car unattended in the turnaround in front of the Lakeview Clubhouse. Watch out for pedestrians and please slow down.
Lake Management Vendor
The Board of Directors has approved Aquatic Environmental Services to provide Lake Management and Detention Pond Maintenance for Hamilton Mill. The services include evaluation and treatment for lakes and inspection and debris removal for detention basins. They use safe aquatic herbicides to control vegetation to ensure proper water flow and function. Aquatic Environmental is a Lake Management Division of Aqua Doc and has been in business for 35 years. Aqua Doc is fully staffed with biologist and licensed aquatic specialists.
Amenity Monitoring Services
The Board of Directors has approved Paradigm Security Services to provide Amenity Monitoring Services for Hamilton Mill. Paradigm is a locally owned Security Services company that provides clients with professional unarmed safety personnel. An officer will be assigned to Hamilton Mill that will be fully trained and experienced in the role of monitoring and reporting activities in the community as well as effective communication skills with residents and law enforcement. The officer will be onsite during varying hours and will patrol the neighborhood in a marked patrol vehicle. Paradigm Security and Property Management will provide the guidelines established by the Board of Directors as it relates to amenity access and resident and guest rules. Guarded Services will continue to provide monitoring services through the end of May and the Association thanks them for their service to Hamilton Mill. Gaye Cantrell Community Association Manager On Site – Hamilton Mill
The Hamilton Mill Board of Directors is excited about the new Budget and Finance Committee
We’re pleased to announce the formation of the HMCA Finance and Budget Committee. The committee members are Kent Brings, Bill Hanes, Allison Heusel, Chris Jones, and JJ Crump. They will be meeting on a monthly basis. The meetings will be posted on the community calendar on hmill.com. Their first order of business is to review the 2016 reserve study in detail. This project will serve two primary objectives. The first is to produce an accurate account of our current contribution needs. The second will help us to develop a 5-year plan of needed reserve expenditures. This committee looks forward to contributing to the betterment of the Hamilton Mill Community Association.

COMMUNITY NEWS
GROUNDS AND FACILITIES UPDATE Spring projects are winding down and we want to thank our new management company and property manager Gaye Cantrell for overseeing an exhaustive list of maintenance items and huge projects. The lake dredging and Millview Pool refurbishment were two huge projects that were begun by the volunteers of the community and taken over by Gaye and her team to successful completion. Gaye keeps the community informed via the Hamilton Mill Weekly Communications email. If you are not receiving these weekly updates, please make sure you are signed up on hmill.com which is the official community website. On another note, thank you to all of the neighborhood volunteers for coordinating graduation banners. We appreciate all of the efforts and they all look wonderful. Congrats to all of our graduates. The latest drive through of the neighborhood has revealed more declining and dead trees. The association will be pursuing more bids for the tree removals. At this time, we are not replacing the trees. It is not the right time to plant trees and many are in areas that are overgrown so they will not be replaced. FYI, Leyland Cypresses are experiencing a decline throughout the Southeast due to Seiridium Canker or Bot Canker. Hamilton Mill has not been immune. Some Leylands have already been removed from common areas and we are keeping an eye on others. Once a diseased tree is removed a Leyland cannot be replanted in the
6 | HOMETOWN HERALD | June 2017
same area. Here are 2 links for further information: http://www. clemson.edu/extension/hgic/pests/plant_pests/trees/hgic2004.html http://extension.uga.edu/publications/detail.cfm?number=B1229 With this problem, we highly discourage plantings of Leylands. There are several alternatives that homeowners can plant. Feel free to discuss these alternatives with your local nursery. Please note that modification approvals are needed for any tree removal on homeowner’s property should this be necessary. G&F has focused on maintenance of physical buildings and assets this year. We hope everyone is pleased with the progress. Hamilton Mill is huge–with over 35 miles of road frontage that we manage. It takes a village, so if you see anything that needs attention, please let us know. Go to hmill. com, Committees, Grounds and Facilities tab and there is a form that goes to property management and G&F volunteers. Enjoy your summer!

GIRL SCOUTS A Message from Troop 3064 Calling all fur baby owners… there’s a new (and much needed) addition to Patrick Road! Under the leadership of Troop Leader Amy Smith, Girl Scout Troop 3064 participated in a Year of Service. One of the Troop’s initiatives for their Year of Service was to purchase a dog waste station for Patrick Road. In order to raise funds for this initiative, the girls had the BRILLIANT idea of making homemade dog treats and toys and selling them at a stand in WindRidge. With the funds from the sale of dog treats and toys, the Troop was able to purchase a dog waste station for Patrick Road. The waste station was installed the last week of April near the Windridge and WoodLeaf subdivisions. The waste station includes bags and a trash can. Dog walkers… please use this waste station that the girls worked so hard to raise money for.
Thank you Troop 3064 for your service and contribution to improve our community!

BIG thanks to Buffalo’s Café and all their great staff for their generous support at the Pink Party and tennis tournament. Our 2nd Annual Hamilton Mill for Hope tennis tournament was held on May 8th and 9th and raised over $15,000 to support breast
cancer care and prevention at Gwinnett Medical Center. The fun began in late April at the 12th Annual Buffalo’s Café PINK PARTY where there was an amazing show of support. We raised a lot of money selling Pink Party tickets and raffling items donated from local businesses. The Tennis Tournament at the Lakeview Tennis Center had over 40 participants and many volunteers and spectators who enjoyed a fun, action-packed day of tennis and shopping at the booths set up by local businesses. Each day started with a goody bag and continental breakfast, which led into a 10 team (4 players each) round robin format tournament. The event brings together players from all levels and teams and exemplifies how fun it is to play tennis at Hamilton Mill year-round. The closing luncheon at the Hamilton Mill Lakeview Clubhouse was the highlight of the event where we enjoyed good food, laughter, compassion and friendship while supporting a common goal to fight this deadly disease. Special thanks to our neighbor and friend, Trish Lowrie, for sharing her inspirational story of her diagnosis, treatment and ongoing battle with breast cancer. Our prayers are with you Trish and thank you for your courage and for motivating all of us to get our yearly mammogram. You have touched our lives and hearts. Hamilton Mill for Hope is making hope a reality…Thank you all!

TENNIS TIPS
Spring Alta is finally complete and our next busy time is summer tennis. Summer brings junior camps, USTA and Alta mix-doubles that will compete for court time in June and July. With school returning in the first of August, a lot of tennis is packed in a short period of time. This spring Alta 2017 was one of Hamilton Mill’s finest rankings at the end of the season. We had 9 teams make it to the playoffs. That is normal–but we had 6 teams win the division! That is something that all of Hamilton Mill should be proud of.
When it comes to a well-rounded serve, we often overlook the little errors that keep us from winning more matches. Sometimes it helps to take a step back and re-evaluate what you think you know. Players are now able to play multiple teams in one league season. With the addition of the flex league, players can have over 4 matches a week not including practice matches. The serve is very important part of the game. Sometimes if reflects how you play the whole match, mentally and physically. Here are six questions to ask yourself -- you might be surprised at how much room for improvement you actually have.

SPRING ALTA PLAYOFFS Senior Women: B3 Sowers – Division Winners
1. How reliable is my first serve? A big first serve that rarely goes in is not much of a weapon. To make your first serve more accurate divide the service square into three equal sized areas from the service line to the net. Now serve wide to the forehand side, then the middle, then serve down the center line. Placement will generate a better second shot for you after your serve. 2. How deep is your serve? How deep does your serve land in the service box? We all love a fast serve but your serve can be slow as long as at lands deep in service box. If your serve lands too short your partner will have no chance to volley and they will have a strong shot off your serve. Remember the serve is your advantage not your crutch.
Thursday Women: B6 Hutson – Division Winners B6 Friedman – 3rd place C2 Crawford – 2nd place
3. How is my ball toss? The number one problem on all serves is the ball toss. We don’t use our non-dominant hand enough which leads to erratic ball toss. Toss the ball at 1 o’clock. The ball toss should land in front the baseline. The ball should not rotate when you throw it up to serve. The ball should be high enough that you should reach up to hit the ball. Toss the ball slow, the speed comes from your racket swing.
Jr Boys: C1 Kopanski – 2nd place Men: B4 Foley – Division Winners C1 Dillon – Division Winners Sunday Women: B1 Heusel – Division Winners B6 Kay – Division Winners CALLING ALL JUNIOR TENNIS PLAYERS We are trying to form more junior Alta teams for the fall. Sign up is in June for the fall league. Calling part time players, I love tennis players and tennis is my second sport. The ALTA Junior Tennis League is designed for boys and girls ages 7 to 18. The teams are organized by gender with the girls teams playing on Saturday afternoons at 1:30 pm and the boys teams playing on Saturday afternoons at 3:30 pm. Teams are broken down into 10 & under, 12 & under, 14 & under, and 18 & under age groups The $10 annual membership fee may be paid online on the Alta website. Team Managers, typically the parent of one of the team members, organize the eight (8) or more players. We do a once a week clinic for the kids with a coach. I know Saturdays can be busy but if we get enough players on the team then the child doesn’t have to play each week. Email the tennis shop milltennis@bellsouth.net for info on how to sign up. You must be a Hamilton Mill resident to play on teams.
Serve
4. How effective is my slice serve? If your serve does not carry wide of the doubles side line on the deuce side after hitting the singles side line, you are not getting enough side spin. Hit the ball at the 3 o’clock mark and then pronate your forearm sharply through the hit. Now you should be able to move your opponent way off the court. 5. How effective am I at hiding the direction of my serve? If your opponents seem to read your serve like a book, you are likely giving away your intended direction by your toss. A good way to solve this problem is to use a semicircular toss. Now your opponent has almost no clue whether you are going to hit a flat, slice or topspin serve. 6. How does my serve hold up under pressure situations? Many players serve well until the score becomes critical and then they fall apart. They get so jittery that their usual reliable serve loses all directional control. To overcome this from happening to you, clear you mind. Stop thinking of the point, but focus all the attention only on centering the desired serve. Remember to have rituals before you serve. How many times do you bounce the ball? Do you breathe? Do you look where you are going serve? See ya on the courts.
